As a Product Manager, you’ve been deeply involved in the development of your product since it was just a twinkle in your eye. You’ve seen its initial prototypes, watched it stumble to take those first steps into early user testing, experienced the heartbreak of failures and the exhilaration of positive customer feedback. Surely, once the product is ready to fly the nest and get out into the market, all the hard work is done and you should be able to just watch it leave, like a proud parent?

Unfortunately, you can’t rest just yet, you’d be missing one of the most important parts of your journey. It’s time to present your baby to the world, like Rafiki proudly thrusting Simba over the edge of Pride Rock. Don’t let all your weeks, months and years of hard work crumble to nothing out in the big, bad world due to a poorly-communicated product presentation.

By making sure your product presentation hits three key pillars of persuasion, you’re guaranteed to give your product the best start in life, setting it up for a successful future.

1. Lead with emotion in your product presentation

Tell a story.

Stories are the most powerful way of communicating information in your product presentation. They help to engage your audience on an emotional and intellectual level, which is far more powerful than just info-dumping lists of facts and figures. Even the most hard-nosed, data-driven audiences can’t resist a good story.

The very nature of the product presentation is a prime  storytelling opportunity. You’re introducing something new, so you can craft a narrative of change. And there’s bound to be a compelling story or two in the development of your product. Get your audience involved with your product emotionally by transferring the very purpose of its conception through story.

Implement a narrative structure with a clear beginning, middle and end. This way you can clearly demonstrate the difference your product will make. Begin by talking about the current state of affairs, introduce conflict by talking about problems that your customers face, then end by introducing a brighter vision of the future with your product as the solution.

Can I help you?

Just like all proud parents, you want to position your product as the hero of this tale. But your audience wants to know how this change is going to help the end-user and, in turn, improve their own lives. A great product is built to solve the problems of its customers, and developed to perfection because you know them intimately. You’ve talked to your customers, you’ve listened to their feedback and their struggles. You’ve already done the hard work.

Don’t forget about the real people who drove you to develop your product, when it comes to presenting it. If you know them so well, you should be able to craft a product presentation that tells the story from their point of view. Paint a picture of who they are to create an emotional connection with your audience. What are their goals, dreams, aspirations? Take your audience on a journey through the eyes of the customer and invoke the same emotions in your audience as your product does in them.

Find your why

Businesses don’t generate loyalty based on what they do or how they do it. Selling through features just isn’t enough, consumers want to buy from businesses that believe what they believe.

By moving the focus away from the features, benefits, facts and figures, and leading with customer-centric storytelling, you can connect with beliefs and emotions and change the buying behaviours of your audience. Instead of approaching your audience with the facts, try thinking about what they believe and what they really want, and show them how this aligns with your own beliefs and how you can get them to where they want to be.

2. Support your product presentation with fact

Now that emotional storytelling has got them hooked, prove to your audience that this isn’t fiction.

Real customer results

As a successful Product Manager, you know the importance of sourcing quality feedback when it comes to developing your product, ready for market. The ability to capture market feedback and translate it into a coherent vision is why you’re so good at what you do. Don’t underestimate the impact of using this feedback early in your product presentation as well.

To  paraphrase Jeff Bezos ,  nothing flattens a hierarchy like customer feedback.  The audience may be willing to overlook your opinion, but they can’t ignore the opinions of the people using the product.

Real-world examples of how your product is being used provide powerful storytelling opportunities. You can take advantage of them to demonstrate how it’s a better alternative to the competition and prove that it works.

Paint by numbers

We know you haven’t got your product to market without accumulating reams and reams of data, relating to every feature, every prototype, every spin around the block. This quantitative information is an important part of any communication collateral that aims to persuade, presentations included. But how you choose to visualise your data is the difference between high-impact factual messaging, and lulling your audience into a deep slumber.

Numbers on their own are abstract and difficult to understand. They have little semantic meaning, so you can forget about pasting Excel sheets onto your slides. However, our brains can process and extract visual meaning at an astounding rate, so using graphics to represent data just makes sense. Bring your data to life with out-of-the-box visualisation, key stats, infographics and icons. Retention of data increases dramatically when people can ‘see the numbers’.

Keep it clear

You know this product inside out, and you’re proud to be representing your team’s hard work in front of potential retailers. There are so many incredible features that you want to shout about, but don’t let yourself get carried away. Just because you’re excited about each and every success, doesn’t mean they will be. Instead, ask yourself “why should the audience care?” and strip away any messaging that doesn’t pass the test.

In order to be persuaded, they first need to understand what you’re saying, and then they need to remember it. Firing out a hundred pieces of information a minute is not going to achieve either of these objectives. Keep your product presentation to one idea per slide, and allow time for each message to sink in before you move on.

Try to deliver each unit of information in the clearest and simplest way possible, even if you’re talking to experts. The less cognitive energy your audience needs to expel in order to understand, the better they’ll feel about your presentation. Don’t make them work hard for it, because they won’t.

Your slide design can help here as well. Use minimal text set against powerful, relevant images that match the quality of your product. Maintain consistent use of colour throughout to reduce distractions and keep things uniform. Also, employ subtle animations and transitions to explain processes and help your information flow along naturally.

3. Build trust

Getting ahead of the game.

Persuasion starts before you even open your mouth. Credibility comes down to trust; both in the speaker and in the organisation. If you haven’t established yourself as an authority, you’ve lost before you’ve even begun.

Modern-day influencers like Seth Godin and Neil Patel have spent years regularly putting out valuable content to establish this authority. Make sure you’re communicating your expertise to the world, outside of your presentations. Write articles, contribute to industry discussions, get your voice heard and show you know what you’re talking about.

Delivering credible product presentations is more than showing up on the day with a great set of slides.

But, of course, there is a lot you can do to establish credibility and trust when you’re stood in front of your audience.

Personal trust can be established in multiple ways, but it can also be hindered in multiple ways. So, how can you make your audience trust you? It’s not just a case of telling an audience that you know what you’re talking about, and they should trust what you say. It’s how well you convince them that you’re qualified to speak on the subject.

First, forget about selling. Think back to the last time you were buying a car or trialling a gym membership. Did you feel as though the sales representative really had your best interests at heart? Or were you just a means to hitting a sales target? If your audience smells desperation or selfish motivation in your pitch, they won’t believe that your product really is the answers to all their prayers, and all your credibility will disappear. Instead, remember your purpose and remember why you’re really there.

Present your credentials . This doesn’t mean running through your entire CV or LinkedIn profile. Show that you are qualified, but don’t brag. Expertise is more than just a list of achievements, you can communicate your confidence and authority through your actions. Your voice, gestures, expressions and movement all add to a complete communication of credibility. 

Show your connection with others. Having the endorsement of other people or organisations that are established as trustworthy, will enhance your credibility in return. You can do this through awards and accreditations, as well as testimonials and case studies. Reinforce competence by letting other companies, that your audience already trusts, shout about their experience with you.

Deliver your product presentation with passion

You’ve developed your product with passion, so don’t lose it when you stand in front of an audience. As the product’s owner, you’re closer to product than anyone else. Use the fact that you genuinely care about its success to your advantage and speak from the heart.

Audiences are extremely perceptive to authenticity. If they don’t trust in your genuine belief in your product, they won’t trust anything else you have to say.

If you’re gearing up for your next product launch, you’re probably preparing a product presentation Powerpoint. Your new product presentation is not just about showing off your latest development. It’s also an opportune time for you to talk about your target audience’s needs and issues – and how your product management team sought to resolve them by creating the object featured in your presentation.

Here are some top dos and don’t when putting together and preparing to give over your product presentation.

Do: Prepare

You can’t wing product management, so don’t assume you can wing your product presentation either. Study up on your new product and its launch, practice conveying your message using relaxed, yet authoritative body language and fully understand important subject matter. Never read directly from your slides. Your audience can do that just fine on their own.

Don’t: Waste their time

Instead of going on and on about how great your company is and describing irrelevant information in exasperating detail and with too much flair, adhere to the “ Time and 60% Rule .” Keep your product presentation short and simple, adjusting it product presentation to fit just 60% of the alloted time, saving extra minutes for questions, comments and explanations.

Every prospective customer is unique, why should your Powerpoint – or your oral product presentation be any different? Rather than relying on a go-to, “generic” slideshow to win over your target audience, tailor your product presentation to meet the needs and provide added value to the potential customer sitting in the room. It is crucial that your product presentation demonstrates just how helpful your development can be to their workflow.

Don’t: Get too technical

Don’t bore – or worse, alienate your audience, by using too many industry buzzwords or other technical jargon not integral to getting you message across. It is important that your presentation focuses on the product’s benefits rather than on features and other complex tech-speak. While a certain amount of technical explaining is required to introduce your product to your target audience, you don’t want to run the risk of speaking over their heads and losing their attention before you’ve reeled them in.

Product presentations are a great way to introduce customers to new products and their top features and benefits. While it’s common to place visually stunning product presentations on the home page or product page, that’s not the only use for them on an ecommerce website.

In this tutorial, we’re going to demonstrate how to create a product presentation for your blog with the help of the Chocolate Bar Product Presentation template .

When you build an ecommerce site, your product presentations play an important role in selling your goods. That’s why having a visually stimulating design such as this one is important:

That said, sometimes one of the most effective ways to sell your products is to not actively sell them. In this tutorial, we’re going to repurpose this template for a blog post on a liquor store’s website called “3 Creative Cocktails for Your Midnight Toast”.

The product presentation will still show off different products available in the store. However, the goal of the presentation is to give customers tips and recipes for crafting their own cocktails.

There are four slides in this product presentation slider. We only need three.

If you’d like to delete any of the slides as well, go to “Slides” in the top toolbar. Then click the trash can icon that appears next to Slide #4 when you hover over it.

Alternatively, if you need more slides, click the duplicate/copy icon to the right of the trash can to create new ones.

Each product’s slide has a unique background color. To edit it, go to “Slide Options” and “Background”. Click the color block to open the editor.

You can choose from a presets in the bottom-right corner or enter a custom HEX code in the Color field.

Before you move onto the next step, it’s a good idea to edit the background color of the module. While your visitors will only see it for a fraction of a second as the slider loads, setting it to match the color of the first slide (or even your cover image) will create a more seamless user experience.

You can do this by going to “Module Options”, “Layout”, and scrolling down to the “Module Background” section.

When you’re done, save your changes.

  • Changing Template Background Colors and Images

The color strip that goes down the center of each slide is a layer called Middle Group . To edit the color of each, select the layer from the canvas or timeline. Then go to “Style” and “Background” to modify the color.

Do this for each slide and then save your changes.

We’re going to give our products a bit more room to breathe by removing the arrows navigation on the left and right sides of the screen. To do the same, hold down the Ctrl or command key. Then click on the following layers in the timeline editor:

  • Arrow-Right
  • Circle-Right
  • Circle – Left

Hit the Backspace or delete key and this will remove these components entirely.

Repeat this for each slide.

In the template’s product presentation, we see wrapped and unwrapped chocolate bars. You can lay out your presentation in a similar manner. You can also use it to show different sides of your product.

Since we’re using this presentation to summarize our blog post’s tips, we need to do something different. So we’re going to place a photo of our liquor product on one side and then a photo of the recommended martini on the other.

When sizing your images, try to get them as close to the originals as possible. That way, you can minimize the amount of editing needed in Slider Revolution.

Pro tip: Your images should have a transparent background. That said, if they don’t have a built-in shadow, we’d recommend adding one as it’ll give your design some depth. You can do this using any type of design software.

The (wrapped) Chocolate image is 370px by 798px.

The (unwrapped) Open Chocolate image is 370px by 774px.

To replace the existing images, select them in the canvas or timeline. Then go to “Content” to upload your new ones.

If you need to resize either of the images, use the settings under “Size & Pos” to do so. Edit the value in the W field to change the width of your image. The H (height) will scale along with it.

Note: While your new image sizes should scale up or down accordingly on smaller devices, responsive edits may still be necessary. You can review and make any necessary modifications by opening the responsive variant switcher in the top toolbar.

When making changes from these views, they’ll only apply to the device you’re working on. So you won’t have to worry about the work you did in the main Desktop screen being overridden.

When you’re done editing your images, save your changes.

  • Editing Images in Template Modules
  • Ensuring Modified Content Is Still Responsive

There are six text layers to edit in this step:

  • Description

To edit the copy, go to “Content”. From there, you can change what each of the text layers says.

Next, open the “Style” panel. Change the font and make other stylistic changes to the color, weight, spacing, and more.

If you changed the colors or weight of any of these text layers, consider doing the same to the separating lines between the Feature layers. You can also remove or add lines or change the style of them, if you like.

You can do this under “Style” and “Border”.

Once you’re done customizing the text in the first slide. Repeat the process for all the other slides.

  • Editing Text from Template Modules

In the backdrop of each slide is the name of the company: “chocobliss”. It’s not just there for branding though. It also adds some texture to the solid background color.

You can follow this pattern and update the Text Overlay Bg layer with the name of your company. You could also add the individual product’s name or a relevant keyword here.

Edit this layer the same way you did the foreground text layers. Go to “Content” to change what it says and “Style” to customize the font, color, etc.

Pro tip: To keep the text looking more like a texture and not distract too much from the main text or product imagery, use a heavily stylized script or brush font.

Editing the Cta Button layer will be a lot like editing the text around it. There are a few exceptions.

To modify the button color, go to “Style” and “Background” to change the BG Color .

To change the button’s hover state, go to “Hover”. You can make basic stylistic changes as well as advanced transformations from this panel.

Lastly, to edit the button’s link, go to “Actions”. Since this is a product presentation, each slide’s link should be unique to the product (or, in our case, the recipe). Customize the Simple Link and then close the pop-up to save your changes.

Repeat this process for all of the slides.

Since we removed the sidebar arrows, we’re going to increase the visibility of the remaining bullets navigation.

To modify the navigation, go to “Navigation Options” and “Bullets”. You can choose a different style of bullet and then make changes to the color, size, spacing, and more from this panel.

Lastly, go to “Slides” and open up the Global Layers. This is where the Preload-Background cover image is as well as the Logo that appears at the top of each slide.

Start with the cover/preload image. It can be a promotional image showing your products or it can be a themed image. When exporting it, make sure the dimensions are at least 1920px by 1080px.

Select the Preload-Background layer and then upload your new image under either “Content” or “Style”.

The Logo is generated using a plain text layer. It’s the same text and font used in the background of each of the slides. So you can edit the text the same way here.

Note: The Logo doesn’t necessarily need to be your logo or company name. For instance, we’ve added the blog post title to this spot in ours.

When you’re done with your edits, save your changes. Then open the Preview .

When you’re happy with how your product presentation turned out, embed it on the page it belongs on (whether that’s the home page, product page, or something else). There are two ways to do this. Either copy the embed shortcode from “Module Options” and add it to the page. Or use the Slider Revolution widget to do it inside your page builder.

Being product-centered isn’t one of them. Or simply focusing on your sales pitch won’t do the trick.

So what can you do to make your offer compelling?

Many sales presentations fall flat because they ignore this universal psychological bias: People overvalue the benefits of what they have over what they’re missing.

Harvard Business School professor John T. Gourville calls this the “ 9x Effect .” Left unchecked, it can be disastrous for your business.

According to Gourville, “It’s not enough for a new product simply to be better. Unless the gains far outweigh the losses, customers will not adopt it.”

The good news: You can influence how prospects perceive these gains and losses. One of the best ways to prove value is to contrast life before and after your product.

Luckily, there’s a three-step formula for that.

  • Before → Here’s your world…
  • After → Imagine what it would be like if…
  • Bridge → Here’s how to get there.

Start with a vivid description of the pain, present an enviable world where that problem doesn’t exist, then explain how to get there using your tool.

It’s super simple, and it works for cold emails , drip campaigns , and sales discovery decks. Basically anywhere you need to get people excited about what you have to say.

In fact, a lot of companies are already using this formula to great success. The methods used in the sales presentation examples below will help you do the same.

We’re all drawn to happiness. A study at Harvard tells us that emotion is contagious .

You’ll notice that the “Before” (pre-Digital Age) pictures in Facebook’s slides all display neutral faces. But the cover slide that introduces Facebook and the “After” slides have smiling faces on them.

This is important. The placement of those graphics is an intentional persuasion technique.

Studies by psychologists show that we register smiles faster than any other expression. All it takes is 500 milliseconds (1/20th of a second). And when participants in a study were asked to recall expressions, they consistently remembered happy faces over neutral ones.

What to do about it : Add a happy stock photo to your intro and “After” slides, and keep people in “Before” slides to neutral expressions.

Here are some further techniques used during the sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Use Simple Graphics

Use simple graphics to convey meaning without text.

Example: Slide 2 is a picture of a consumer’s hand holding an iPhone — something we can all relate to.

Why It Works: Pictures are more effective than words — it’s called  Picture Superiority . In presentations, pictures help you create connections with your audience. Instead of spoon-feeding them everything word for word, you let them interpret. This builds trust.

Tactic #2: Use Icons

Use icons to show statistics you’re comparing instead of listing them out.

Example: Slide 18 uses people icons to emphasize how small 38 out of 100 people is compared to 89 out of 100.

Why It Works:  We process visuals 60,000 times faster than text.

Tactic #3: Include Statistics

Include statistics that tie real success to the benefits you mention.

Example: “71% lift driving visits to retailer title pages” (Slide 26).

Why It Works:  Precise details prove that you are telling the truth.

Just like how you can’t drive from Marin County to San Francisco without the Golden Gate, you can’t connect a “Before” to an “After” without a bridge.

Add the mission statement of your company — something Contently does from Slide 1 of their deck. Having a logo-filled Customers slide isn’t unusual for sales presentations, but Contently goes one step further by showing you exactly what they do for these companies.

They then drive home the Before-After-Bridge Formula further with case studies:

After: What your company accomplished for them

Bridge : How they got there (specific actions and outcomes)

Here are some other tactics we pulled from the sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Use Graphics/Diagrams

Use graphics, Venn diagrams, and/or equations to drive home your “Before” picture.

Why It Works:  According to a Cornell study , graphs and equations have persuasive power. They “signal a scientific basis for claims, which grants them greater credibility.”

Tactic #2: Keep Slides That Have Bullets to a Minimum

Keep slides that have bullets to a minimum. No more than one in every five slides.

Why It Works:  According to an experiment by the International Journal of Business Communication , “Subjects exposed to a graphic representation paid significantly more attention to , agreed more with, and better recalled the strategy than did subjects who saw a (textually identical) bulleted list.”

Tactic #3: Use Visual Examples

Follow up your descriptions with visual examples.

Example: After stating “15000+ vetted, ready to work journalists searchable by location, topical experience, and social media influence” on Slide 8, Contently shows what this looks like firsthand on slides 9 and 10.

Why It Works:  The same reason why prospects clamor for demos and car buyers ask for test drives. You’re never truly convinced until you see something for yourself.

Which is more effective for you?

This statement — “On average, Yesware customers save ten hours per week” — or this image:

The graphic shows you what that 10 hours looks like for prospects vs. customers. It also calls out a pain that the product removes: data entry.

Visuals are more effective every time. They fuel retention of a presentation from 10% to 65% .

But it’s not as easy as just including a graphic. You need to keep the design clean.

Can you feel it?

Clutter provokes anxiety and stress because it bombards our minds with excessive visual stimuli, causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t important.

Here’s a tip from Yesware’s Graphic Designer, Ginelle DeAntonis:

“Customer logos won’t all necessarily have the same dimensions, but keep them the same size visually so that they all have the same importance. You should also disperse colors throughout, so that you don’t for example end up with a bunch of blue logos next to each other. Organize them in a way that’s easy for the eye, because in the end it’s a lot of information at once.”

Tactic #1: Personalize Your Final Slide

Personalize your final slide with your contact information and a headline that drives emotion.

Why It Works: These small details show your audience that:

  • This is about giving them the end picture, not making a sale
  • The end of the presentation doesn’t mean the end of the conversation
  • Questions are welcomed

Tactic #2: Pair Outcome Statements With Icons in Circles

Example: Slide 4 does this with seven different “After” outcomes.

Why It Works:  We already know why pictures work, but circles have power , too. They imply completeness, infiniteness, and harmony.

Tactic #3: Include Specific Success Metrics

Don’t just list who you work with; include specific success metrics that hit home what you’ve done for them.

Example: 35% New Business Growth for Boomtrain; 30% Higher Reply Rates for Dyn.

Why It Works:  Social proof drives action. It’s why we wait in lines at restaurants and put ourselves on waitlists for sold-out items.

People can only focus for eight seconds at a time. (Sadly, goldfish have one second on us.)

This means you need to cut to the chase fast.

Uber’s headlines in Slides 2-9 tailor the “After” picture to specific pain points. As a result, there’s no need to explicitly state a “Before.”

Slides 11-13 then continue touching on “Before” problems tangentially with customer quotes:

So instead of self-touting benefits, the brand steps aside to let consumers hear from their peers — something that sways 92% of consumers .

Leading questions may be banned from the courtroom, but they aren’t in the boardroom.

DealTap’s slides ask viewers to choose between two scenarios over and over. Each has an obvious winner:

Ever heard of the Focusing Effect?

It’s part of what makes us tick as humans and what makes this design move effective. We focus on one thing and then ignore the rest. Here, DealTap puts the magnifying glass on paperwork vs. automated transactions.

Easy choice.

Sure, DealTap’s platform might have complexities that rival paperwork, but we don’t think about that. We’re looking at the pile of work one the left and the simpler, single interface on the right.

Here are some other tactics to use in your own sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Tell a Story

Tell a story that flows from one slide to the next.

Example: Here’s the story DealTap tells from slides 4 to 8: “Transactions are complicated” → “Expectations on all sides” → “Too many disconnected tools” → “Slow and error prone process” → “However, there’s an opportunity.

Why It Works:   Storytelling in sales with a clear beginning and end (or in this case, a “Before” and “After”) trigger a trust hormone called Oxytocin.

Tactic #2: This vs. That

If it’s hard to separate out one “Before” and “After” vision with your product or service because you offer many dissimilar benefits, consider a “This vs. That” theme for each.

Why It Works:  It breaks up your points into simple decisions and sets you up to win emotional reactions from your audience with stock photos.

Remember how satisfying it was to play connect the dots? Forming a bigger picture out of disconnected circles.

That’s what you need to make your audience do.
