Managing Group Sets

Managing groups, managing group enrollment, managing group activities & content.

A  Group Set  is a collection of groups. A new Group Set is needed for every assignment that calls for a new grouping of students. When getting started with Group Sets, learn to:

  • Create a Group Set with the Canvas guide  How do I add a group set in a course?
  • Edit a Group Set with the Canvas guide  How do I edit a group set in a course?

Do not delete a group set after submissions have been made by any group in that set.

Use unique group names in order to ensure students can identify which course the group is from, as all of their groups are listed in a single place outside of the course.

Do not delete a group after a submission has been made by that group.

Groups  are the specific groupings of students within a Group Set.  When getting started with Groups, learn to:

  • Automatically create groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I automatically create groups in a group set?
  • Manually create groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I manually create groups in a group set?
  • Create self sign-up groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I create self sign-up groups in a group set?
  • Allow students to create groups with the Canvas guide  How do I allow students to create their own student groups?

Students can only belong to one group in a group set. This precludes them from taking part in group work or group discussions in Canvas in multiple groups for the same assignment/activity.

Do not change membership in a group after a submission has been made by that group.

When enrolling students in Groups, learn to:

  • Automatically enroll students in groups with the Canvas guide  How do I automatically assign students to groups?
  • Manually enroll students in groups with the Canvas guide  How do I manually assign students to groups?
  • Assign a student leader to a group with the Canvas guide  How do I assign a student leader to a group?
  • Change group enrollments with the Canvas guide  How do I move a student into a different group?
  • Prevent students from changing self sign-up group enrollment with the Canvas guide  How do I prevent students from switching groups in self sign-up groups?

While students can manage their Group spaces in Canvas, instructors are able to generate activities for groups and view group content. When managing group activities and content, learn to:

  • Grade Group Assignments in the SpeedGrader with the Canvas guide  How do I grade group assignments in SpeedGrader?
  • Create a graded Group Discussion with the Canvas guide  How do I assign a graded discussion to a course group?
  • View a group’s files with the Canvas guide  How do I view group files as an instructor?
  • View a group’s content and student group activity with the Canvas guide  How do I view content and student activity within a group as an instructor?

Collaborative assessment: Group submissions in Canvas

Canvas features a range of useful tools that facilitate group and collaborative work between students. These tools include collaborative Pages, Collaborations – online shared Google Docs or Office 365 documents, and Canvas Groups. In this post we are going to focus on Group assignments in Canvas.

how to create groups for assignments in canvas

In order to create group assignments in your Canvas module you will first need to set up student Groups. Groups are effectively a ‘mini module’ within your Canvas module site which provide students with their own tools for collaborative work. To find out more about Groups see our previous post Canvas Highlights – 2. Groups and to learn how to set up groups see How do I automatically create groups in a group set? or How do I manually create groups in a group set?

Once your student groups are created you can then move on to setting up your group assignment. To do this first go to Assignments in the module menu where you can create a new assignment. For Canvas assignment students can submit a range of content including any type of file, video or audio recordings, or a website URL. You then simply tick the box to indicate ‘This is a group assignment’ and select the Group Set that you have previously created.

screenshot of assignment settings

Students would then choose one group member to submit on behalf of their group, with Canvas applying this submission to each member of the group. You can then provide feedback and a mark on this one submission rather than marking the same piece of work four or five times, saving you time when marking. Once marks are released, this mark and feedback is then provided to all members of the group. If needed, for example if there is a peer marking element in the assessment, you can choose to assign marks individually to each student.

There are a number of different ways that this type of assessment can be used, this could be:

  • Formative group work – students can submit draft work or formative tasks throughout a module, for example this could be weekly tasks associated with that week’s readings.
  • Summative group work – this could include group projects, reports or recorded presentations. Please remember that these marks must also be formally entered into Sussex Direct.
  • Submission of additional/supporting documents – for example slides to accompany a face-to-face presentation.

How to Create Groups in Canvas

Canvas allows the creation of groups for various uses. Instructors can create groups for students to collaborate on group assignments, pages, collaborations, and more. Instructors can also allow students to create their own groups.

Canvas has two types of groups: student groups and group sets. Student groups can be created by either an instructor or a student and are self-organized by students. Group sets are groups that you create to use for graded assignments.

To learn more about Groups, check out  How to Manage Canvas Groups

What are Group Sets?

Group sets house the different groups within a course and allow an instructor to create different groups for different purposes or assignments. For example, a course could have groups of 5 students for a term project and groups of 2 for weekly labs.

How to Create a Group Set

Click the People link in the Course Navigation Menu [1].

Click the Add Group Set button [2].

Canvas page with People link highlighted in Global Navigation and + Group Set button highlighted

Name the Group Set by typing into the Group Set Name field [1].

You can allow self sign-ups by selecting the Allow self sign-up checkbox [2].

In the Group Structure drop-down menu [3] you can choose to:

  • Create groups later . Use this if you want to import a CSV file or manually add students to groups.
  • e.g., I want 5 groups with an equal number of students.
  • e.g.,  I want 7 students per group and it doesn't matter how many groups there are.

Canvas Create Group Set setup

When you select "Split students by number of groups" or "Split number of students per group," you'll need to enter the number of students or groups you want automatically created [4].

You can also chose to have a Group Leader automatically assigned [5].

Canvas group structure and leadership setup

In this example, the instructor wanted 3 groups and chose to set a random student as the group leader. The result is 3 groups of 2 students each. The student listed after the group name is the Group Leader. The group names were automatically generated. You can edit them by selecting Edit  from the kebob menu [⋮] on the right side of the group.

Group final set-up and view of groups in canvas

NOTE: The “Require group members to be in the same section” option available in self sign-up and automatically created groups is broken. We do not have any information from Canvas on when this will be fixed. For now, you must use a CSV file to manually distribute groups across sections. Check out How to manually Create Groups Across Sections for more information.

Group Naming Conventions

When choosing a Group Set name, use a naming convention with your course's unique course code, an abbreviation, or some other easily distinguished group name rather than using generic group names with numbers or letters. Once a student is a member of a group, a  Groups  button appears in their Global Navigation Menu, which lists every group in which the student is a member. Groups with generic names (e.g. Group A, Group 1) may result in confusion or duplication of group names across courses. To help students clearly identify their groups between all of their courses, create group names specific to your course.

Canvas Add Group window in manual mode

When using the automatically create group functions, Canvas will use the Group Set name, along with the number of groups.  For example, naming a Group Set BI 201 and choosing to create 6 groups will result in groups named BI 201: Group 1, BI 201: Group 2, etc.

If you would like to give groups more unique names, you can choose to manually create groups.

Fueled by philanthropy: Construction Engineering and Management program builds opportunities

Ongoing donor support from industry partners help train the next generation of the construction engineering workforce and provides experience to launch their careers.

Three dozen people, mostly young, stand in two rows on a concrete site with the front row squatting. All are wearing white construction hardhats and reflective safety vests. In the background is a blue sky with light clouds and some distant hills.

Strong donor support and industry partnerships bolster a plethora of opportunities offered in San Diego State University’s J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering Management (CEM program), preparing students with a competitive edge and industry knowledge as they enter the workforce.

“The CEM program at SDSU has provided me with countless opportunities to begin my young professional career and to become a part of a highly supportive community. … I have had many off campus opportunities, which includes multiple internship positions and participation in the annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Competition,” said Tristen Montalvo-Benedetto , engineering student and SDSU AGC and Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Chapter President.

Established in 2008, the hands-on program is designed  to promote student success, and create a pipeline to the regional construction workforce.

Harper Construction Company is among several philanthropic supporters that dedicate their time and resources to enriching the engineering management program. Their work with College of Engineering faculty and staff allows students to gain the training needed for construction engineering and management roles upon graduation.

“Our donors' support is essential to the success of the program as we can continue to be competitive with other schools, attract the best faculty to enhance our students' education, and offer hands-on experiences that would not be available without their support,” said AGC Paul S. Roel Chair in Construction Engineering and Management Professor Thais Alves .

Harper, a family-owned and San Diego-based firm, has hired SDSU alumni, and has helped establish faculty positions, student internships, and fieldwork opportunities.

Harper Construction CEO and President and Associated General Contractors (AGC) Board Member Jeff Harper , and founder and Chairman Ron Harper have a strong connection to the San Diego community. Longstanding Aztec sports fan Jeff Harper and his family became interested in finding ways to support student success and the development of the San Diego economy.

“I enjoy that it appears there's some more training all the way around (at SDSU), to get more of a complete skill set involved, which is what we need for the workforce, and particularly what we're doing as a general contractor,” said Harper.

With the preparation the CEM program provides, students graduate with specific qualifications required to lead government-funded engineering projects. Some of these projects include F-35 aircraft hangars, training facilities, and recruitment barracks – useful skills in a county and state with numerous military bases.

In addition, the company helped support the Jim Ryan Chair in Construction Management, which expanded the Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering Department to construction management degrees. Moreover, the endowed chair fund bolsters a high-level faculty position in the program.

Preparing students

“The CEM program is particularly appealing to us as it trains students for, not just the engineering aspect of it but also everything else that’s involved such as letter writing, negotiations, and contracts,” said Jeff Harper.

Alves sees firsthand how the SDSU engineers are ready  for real-world engineering roles upon graduation.

“Being located in a metropolitan area, we have unparalleled access to active construction sites and networking opportunities that usually translate into paid internships and later, high-paying, fulfilling jobs,” said Alves.

The philanthropic support for the program also allows student engineers to participate in field trips to public and private contracting organizations, site visits to ongoing projects as part of course assignments, and networking events that feature guest speakers from industry.

“There are constant opportunities to attend information sessions from industry professionals, receive scholarships, and ultimately be highly qualified for the full-time positions upon graduating. The CEM program is also a very close knit community, where most students know each other, and are able to build long lasting relationships that will carry over to the field and their future careers,” said Montalvo-Benedetto.

The donor impact is far-reaching and has gained momentum from local organizations and industry leaders on the AGC San Diego Board of Directors . Supporters such as President of Marathon Construction Company, Mike Furby; CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company, Mark Filanc; CEO of AGC, San Diego Chapter, Eddie Sprecco; Executive Vice President of AGC, Jim Ryan, Austin Cameron, have each played a significant role in the expansion of the program.

Nemetschek Group to Acquire GoCanvas to Further Accelerate Digitalization in Construction Industry

  • GoCanvas is a leading provider of SaaS solutions for enhancing productivity and safety through paperless collection, reporting and integration of field data in construction
  • Perfect fit with Nemetschek’s Build & Construct Division portfolio strategy
  • Complementary technology, customer base and regional sales split will create strong synergies and accelerate Subscription/SaaS business model transition
  • Combining Bluebeam office and GoCanvas field worker community will create a unique construction ecosystem

The Nemetschek Group (NEM.DE), a leading global provider of software solutions for the AEC/O and media industries, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire all shares in GoCanvas Holdings, Inc., headquartered in Reston, Virginia, USA. GoCanvas® is a leading provider of field worker collaboration software that digitizes traditionally paper-based processes, simplifies inspections, improves safety, and maximizes compliance with more than 300,000 active users worldwide in the first quarter of 2024.

The Nemetschek Group´s Build Segment offers subscription and SaaS products that simplify customers’ jobs and connect openly with other AEC/O solutions and platforms. GoCanvas fits perfectly in this strategy by offering flexible cloud and mobile field worker solutions that help customers efficiently collect real-time data, collaborate across worksites, create digital checklists, make data-driven business decisions, and replace paperwork with smart, simple workflows.

Complementary technologies create a best-in-class portfolio for a sustainable built environment globally

The acquisition of GoCanvas will capture significant growth opportunities and technology synergies through further enhancing market and customer access. GoCanvas further strengthens Nemetschek Group’s positioning in the US while Nemetschek will provide GoCanvas a unique footprint to expand in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Nemetschek Group’s largest brand Bluebeam is already the most trusted name for collaboration solutions in the built environment and is poised to utilize this market leadership to introduce GoCanvas solutions to extend value to field workers. GoCanvas expands the existing Build portfolio of Nemetschek by providing solutions that simplify operations for on-site professionals across diverse sectors including construction, manufacturing and energy with workflows including safety, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), quality and work progress. These solutions deliver enhanced productivity and efficiency gains for field workers, including reduced travel, heightened safety measures, and improved collaboration.

GoCanvas already has a strong position in the fast-growing field worker market. Consequently, the TAM (total addressable market) for the Build segment increases significantly.

“GoCanvas is a great fit and a perfect complement to our existing solution portfolio in the Build segment and therefore represents a valuable addition to our expertise in covering the complete AEC/O life cycle,” says Yves Padrines, CEO of the Nemetschek Group. “Adding the powerful solutions of GoCanvas gives us a strong competitive edge while opening access to a rapidly growing market for field workforces in construction and other adjacent verticals.”

Viyas Sundaram, GoCanvas CEO, adds: “We are thrilled to join the Nemetschek Group as we continue our mission to simplify inspections and digitize paper-based processes. This partnership will accelerate our growth and development, allowing us to offer our solutions to a wider range of customers. Together, we will support them in safeguarding their people, protecting their assets, and delivering exceptional quality.”

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming the GoCanvas team to the Nemetschek family,” adds Usman Shuja, Chief Division Officer of the Build & Construct Division and CEO of Bluebeam Inc. “GoCanvas extends the simplicity and delightful user experience that Bluebeam and 123OnSite users value. I am excited to expand our latest innovations to the field worker. Our customers will significantly benefit from this combined power, as we are now able to provide a comprehensive offering with the most advanced and sustainable functionalities possible.”

Innovative and fast-growing company

GoCanvas was founded in 2008 and has more than 300 employees with locations in the US, Canada, Australia and South Africa. With its strong Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) growth of around 20% in recent years, GoCanvas generated an ARR of USD 67 million and an operating margin still below the Nemetschek Group average in 2023. GoCanvas’ growth is expected to stay at the level of around 20% in the coming years with an increase in operating margin resulting from operational leverage, synergies and economies of scale. The purchase price (on a cash-/debt-free basis) represents a 2023 ARR multiple of around 11.5x based on the 2023 ARR.

Transaction financing will be provided by Nemetschek’s own cash resources and existing credit facilities. The acquisition is expected to close in summer 2024 and is subject to customary regulatory approval and closing conditions. Until the transaction closes, each company will continue to operate independently. Upon closing, the CEO of GoCanvas, Viyas Sundaram, and his team will join the Nemetschek Group. More details related to the transaction will be disclosed after closing of the acquisition.
