Early Childhood Education is critical to child success in the classroom and other early care settings as it impacts lifelong achievement. Educational outcomes.

Upon completion of the Early Childhood Education degree:

• Graduates will explain and apply key concepts of child development from birth through age 8 in their practice, including support for each unique learner in the context of relationships.
• Graduates will demonstrate respectful, responsive, and reciprocal relationships with diverse families, utilizing community resources to support child outcomes and family needs.
• Graduates will describe the purpose and demonstrate skill in applying a variety of child screening, observation, documentation, and assessment techniques.

Field Placement Requirements

Field Placements are a key component of the Early Childhood Education Program. Before enrolling in a field placement course, students must have completed other technical courses required.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students must pass comprehensive background checks, including fingerprinting clearance prior to registering for their first field experience. Additional informational will be provided by the Early Childhood Education department regarding the specific procedures for background checks that align with students’ field experience and career plans. Students are responsible for costs associated with background checks. Talk to the Field Placement Coordinator if you require assistance with related costs. Individual students who have engaged in certain criminal activity could be denied access to gainful employment in their intended field. Field placement sites may also deny access to their site if they have been convicted of certain crimes or substantiated cases found by the Department of Health and Human Services.

If you’re already a working professional, look for an off-campus program that allows you to earn a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Each educational program will focus on a particular developmental area in the life of a child — birth to three years, birth to five years, toddler to first grade and so on.

Make sure that you pay attention to the program you join. Not only do you need to complete a bachelor degree, but you also need to finish a teacher preparation program. The majority of bachelor degree programs make sure that this is included, so your degree culminates in a teaching license, but you’ll still want to double check with every school you consider, to make sure they’re offering exactly what you need. So, when you graduate, you’ll be ready to look for teaching jobs.

However, if you complete a bachelor’s degree, but not a teacher preparation program, all is not lost. Maine allows degree holders to be certified as early childhood teachers if they complete certain extra college coursework. If your degree was in anything child-related, your college coursework you’ve already completed may cover much of it.

Step 2. Pass Your Exams

After you graduate, you’ll have to take at least one required licensing exam. Every state has different requirements, with most states requiring recent education graduates to take a national PRAXIS exam. In Maine you must complete the PRAXIS I and II, which covers Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics; and Education of Young Children.

Once you’ve passed both tests and obtained a Provisional Teaching Certificate, you’ll need to upgrade it after the first 2 years. Plan on taking continuing education hours so you’ll be able to keep your license active.

Step 3. Apply, Renew, and Upgrade Your Licenses

You’ll apply for you Provisional Teaching Certificate by filling out the form you can find online. There is a fee, and you’ll need copies of your credentials, including college transcripts and test scores.

After your initial certificate runs out, you will upgrade to a Professional Certificate. You will need to have completed your new teacher induction, taught full-time in Maine for 2 years, completed the action plan that you put together with the help of your school district, been given a positive review by your district, and finished 6 credit hours in early childhood courses. The professional license is valid for 5 years.

Students at this level can go on to earn an Education Advanced Certificate. With this certification, students will be ready to work as a K-12 Education Technician III or an educational professional.

Students can opt to earn an early elementary (K-grade 3) teacher certificate. To obtain a full Maine certification, the student should complete a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university.

A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education allows you to gain real-life practice in classroom skills, current curriculum, classroom observation, and assessment tools. Upon graduation and licensure, you’ll be ready to work in the Birth to Five-year Infant Care/Preschool/Public Pre-K areas; or the K-3rd grade as an Elementary/Primary Grades teacher.

Accredited Early Childhood Educator Teacher Education Programs

As you check out early childhood education degree or certificate programs, you should also look for each school’s accreditation status. The entire college or university should have an institutional accreditation. Your ECE program should be accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) or another similar agency such as NCATE or TEAC. Once you find this, you’ll know that the teaching material and faculty are both of the highest quality.

Maine preschool teacher careers options.

• Public Schools If your goal is to become a preschool teacher in a public school, you’ll be able to encourage your young students how to develop their ability to engage with others. You’ll also foster an encouraging and creative learning environment within your classroom and teach your students using interactive methods, so they learn their numbers and letters. Expect to work with children from the ages of 2 to 5.
• Private Childcare if private childcare is your goal, you’ll work with a small number of young children or just one child. You can earn an associate degree in Early Childhood Education, then begin working as a teacher in a private home. Once you’ve gained some teaching experience, you may qualify to apply for a childcare center position.
• Private Schools Working in a private school, you’re required to earn your degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field. Depending on the facility, you should have prior preschool teaching experience in one of several educational styles (Montessori, Reggio Emilia, or another discipline). You should be skilled as an early childhood educator, able to connect easily with your students.
• Head Start Programs Working in a Head Start program, you’ll be working with children whose parents have low incomes. With a high-quality education, you’ll be prepared to teach your Head Start students by exposing them to a variety of experiences and subjects. As an Early Childhood Education teacher in a Head Start Center, you’ll work with children from the ages of three to five years.
• Community-Based Programs Community-based learning is civic engagement learning. Very young children are easily capable of learning in a community-based program. The material you teach to your young students will be culturally responsible. It will help you make your classroom engaging and inclusive. It will help if you can support dual-language learners.
• Faith-Based Programs Faith-based programs need Early Childhood Education teachers. Along with teaching your students numbers and letters, you’ll teach them Bible stories and relate them to real, current life. You’ll also engage them in other activities related to the faith topic that you have been teaching.

You may add learning material that is based on the country in which you and your young students are based, such as Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy, or Portugal.

Program Information & Course List

Purpose: The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) prepares graduates to enter positions in a variety of programs that serve children birth to eight years of age, including programs that serve children with special learning and developmental needs. Through a combination of coursework and practical internships, students gain foundational knowledge of the theories of child development along with opportunities for hands on experience including the delivery of meaningful curriculum, practice of observation and assessment, and the use of positive guidance and discipline strategies. That National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Professional Preparation Standards are weaved through ECE courses and internship experiences to prepare students with a working knowledge of core values and principles in the profession of early childhood education. The AAS degree may also be a pathway to earning a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate.  

Career Opportunities: ECE graduates are qualified to apply to Maine Department of Education for an Education Technician II certification. It may also be a pathway to Educational Technician III certification and/or bachelor’s degree and teaching certification (the ECE program has articulation agreements with University of Maine Augusta and Farmington). Graduates are qualified to seek positions as assistant teachers at Head Start programs, or occupations working with children at community-based programs that serve families and children. Graduates may also choose to open their own childcare program through licensing with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.  

Program Educational Outcomes: Upon completion of the AAS degree in the Early Childhood Education program and in accordance with the NAEYC Professional Preparation Standards, the graduate is prepared to:  

• Use child development knowledge base to create safe, health, respectful, supportive environments for all young children.  
• Understand the importance of developmental domains – cognitive, physical, social, emotional to design, implement and evaluate meaningful curriculum for each child.  
• Use a variety of developmentally appropriate approaches and instructional strategies to guide children’s development and learning.  
• Understand and conduct observation and assessment to promote positive outcomes for use in development of appropriate goals, curriculum, and teaching strategies for young children.  
• Understand the complex and diverse characteristics of children’s families and communities and build reciprocal relationships that support families.  
• Understand that positive relationships are the foundation of work with young children.  
• Engage in professional behavior and use ethical guidelines to uphold ethical standards as a member of the early childhood profession.

Teacher education has a proud tradition at the University of Maine at Machias (UMaine Machias). In 1909, Washington State Normal School opened its doors in Machias with the express mission of training teachers. In 1970, the institution became known as University of Maine at Machias.

Today, UMaine Machias continues to draw upon its rich history of preparing individuals to work as K-12 educators. During their time at UMaine Machias, our pre-service teachers have a wealth of opportunities to engage with currently practicing K-12 classroom teachers in local schools through field experiences that begin during the first year in our programs.  Our graduates become highly qualified teachers with strong educational foundation in content and pedagogy.

Students’ Experience Earning Thier M.Ed. in Special Education – Early Intervention Online

Our curriculum explores every element of the early intervention environment. Courses supply the foundations of early intervention professional practice using advanced content in a variety of research areas. Throughout your coursework, you’ll work closely with a faculty advisor to ensure the program meets your needs.

Students seeking certification in Maine are required to take SED 500: Adapting Instruction for Students with Disabilities (3 credits) and a multicultural course in addition to the program of study.

Note: You must be working with young children birth to five years old in order to complete course requirements.

We have rolling admissions so you can apply and be accepted into the program at any time. However, the following dates are recommended:

• Fall Semester: May 10
• Spring Semester: November 1
• Summer Semester: April 1

After these dates, your application will be considered for the next semester.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credits of graduate coursework from another institution or 12 credits from the University of Maine can be transferred into the student’s program. Factors determining if credits can be transferred can include how recently the course was taken and its equivalency to courses in the program. However, graduate courses taken as an undergraduate cannot be transferred into the M.Ed. program. In order to be transferred, courses must be approved by the Special Education faculty during the application process.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a satisfactory GPA (3.0 for regular admission)
• Three semester hours in teaching early childhood special education
• Three semester hours in one of the following: human development, educational psychology, developmental psychology, adolescent psychology, or child development
• Experience working in some capacity with young children with disabilities. Candidates without prior experience may be admitted, but they may be required to complete additional credit hours of field experiences concurrent with coursework.

• A 400 to 500-word essay describing your motivation for obtaining a concentration in Early Intervention that demonstrates your writing skills and capacity for reflection
• Evidence of fingerprinting and a completed background check
• Proof of teaching certification if you currently hold a teaching license

The need for well-trained and knowledgeable special education teachers has never been greater. The demand for special education teachers is rising as children with disabilities are increasingly identified earlier and more are enrolled in special education programs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , employment of special education teachers is projected to grow 8% from 2020 to 2030 with about 38,600 openings per year. The median annual wage for special education teachers was $61,500 in May 2020, higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $41,950.

The concentration can lead to Maine certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (0 to age 5) (282B). Earning certification in other states through this program may be very simple. Please visit your state’s Department of Education for information or visit the United States Department of Education website. Specific information regarding Maine certification is available through the Maine Department of Education .

Graduates can also find opportunities outside the classroom as supervisors and administrators or in social work, health care, or therapy.

Note: As an advanced teacher preparation program, faculty do not recommend students for certification. Currently, students graduating from our M.Ed. concentrations are eligible to apply for Maine teaching certification via Pathway 2 – transcript review. Although faculty can advise, students are responsible for knowledge of certification requirements in the state in which they are seeking certification.

They are also leaders in institutions, such as the Maine Autism Institute for Education and Research , dedicated to improving the lives of those with special needs.  The Early Childhood Education associate in applied science degree combines understanding and application of theory to practical experiences working directly with young children, newborn through preschool.

Graduates of this program are prepared for transfer to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution or to enter the workforce and build a career.

This program’s curriculum is based upon standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and it promotes all facets of current best practices in the field. Successful completion of the ECE program requires students to com­plete field work in licensed and approved facilities. The Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Child Care Licensing, requires students to have a record of SBI (State Bureau of Identification) and a child protec­tive report on file with Central Maine Community College.

91-year-old graduates from college more than 70 years after she first became a student

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( KMOV /Gray News) - A 91-year-old woman graduated from a Missouri college more than 70 years after she first enrolled as a student.

In a release from the University of Missouri, Mary Ellen Foley began pursuing a degree in early childhood education from Southwest Missouri State College, now Missouri State University, in 1950.

Five years later, she transferred to Mizzou in Columbia after she married a man studying animal sciences.

Mizzou said Foley was only a few credit hours short of graduating when she discovered she was pregnant. She dropped out of college so she could raise her children.

In the 1970s, Foley considered reenrolling at Mizzou, but found the degree requirements had changed.

In April, Foley reportedly told her grandson she wanted to finish her college degree, even if it was in another major.

After looking at her transcript, a Mizzou academic advisor told Foley she had enough credits to graduate with a degree in general studies.

Mizzou said Foley’s husband, Charles, died in late March, and her family was informed she would be graduating on what would have been her late husband’s birthday.

Admission Information for Liberty’s Master of Education Program

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Unofficial transcripts can be used for acceptance purposes with the submission of a Transcript Request Form .
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Please note: Licensure requirements vary by state. Be sure to research the licensure requirements for becoming a teacher in your state.

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your master’s degree after the last day of class for your bachelor’s degree.
• Complete a Bachelor’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official/unofficial transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show a minimum of 105 completed credit hours.
• If you are a current Liberty University student completing your undergraduate degree, you will need to submit a Degree/Certificate Completion Application .
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new master’s degree.

Great Bay Community College 2024 graduation: Students, award winners honored

PORTSMOUTH — Great Bay Community College celebrated its 78th commencement with 332 degrees and certificates were conferred and 160 students walking during the ceremonies Saturday.

Associate degree and certificates were awarded to graduates of the programs in accounting, American studies, automotive technology, biological science, biotechnology, business administration, leadership and management, sales and digital marketing, computer numeric control, computer technologies, programming, software development, criminal justice, cybersecurity infrastructure, digital media communications, early childhood education, educator preparation, engineering, English, environmental science, fine arts, history, homeland security and emergency management, hotel, restaurant and event management, information systems technology, liberal arts, massage therapy, motorcycle maintenance and repair technology, nondestructive testing, nursing, psychology, surgical technology, technical studies, veterinary technology and welding technologies.

Lesser welcomed the class of 2024 and crowd of close to 1,000 family and friends. “The faculty, staff and administration, the entire Community College System of New Hampshire are so proud of you for overcoming challenges, persevering, and getting to this next phase of your life” she said. Referring to the quote by Justice Louis Brandeis, ‘fight for the things you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you,’ Lesser continued, “I can’t emphasize enough that you have been prepared to fight for the things that you care about. Mark Rubinstein, chancellor of the Community College System of New Hampshire, offered remarks and recognized the 2024 Chancellor’s Award Recipients for Teaching Excellence and Service Excellence.

Lesser, announced the recipient names for the 2024 President’s Awards for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty and Outstanding Student and Award for Special Contributions. This year’s Outstanding Student Award was presented to graduate Volodymyr Lysianskyi, originally from Ukraine who came to the U.S. seeking an opportunity to obtain higher education and experience a different part of the world. After graduating with an associate degree in engineering science and earning a G.P.A of 3.99, he plans to transfer to the University of New Hampshire.

Lisa McCurley, vice president of academic affairs, announced the recipient names for the 2024 Academic Department Awards.

Wagner spoke about her practice of referring to her program of study as a “project” with each class being a small step culminating to her degree. “It made me sit back and reevaluate how to explain why I was studying the subjects required” she said, “and realized that everything in a project has a purpose. Class of 2024, I hope that we take this experience with us as we continue our project of lifelong learning.”

Shortt shared the story of, after a discouraging day, receiving a personal and timely note from a faculty member that simply read “you can do hard things.”

A wife and mother of four, with a full-time job, and unsure of her path, her decision to attend GBCC was not an easy one. “It didn’t take me long to realize however,” Shortt said, “that nobody actually cared how old I was.  I began to realize that it is in the moments where I do not have all of the answers that I can learn the most.” At the end of her address she closed by saying, “Remember this, Class of 2024: We can do hard things!”

After graduation from GBCC and receiving his associate degree in surgical technology, Gerardo Montes of Dover will be working as a surgical technologist for Mass General Brigham in Boston. “Great Bay impacted my life by helping me understand the importance and value of obtaining an education degree” he says “as well as share and expand my knowledge and be a better person than supports and contributes to the community.” 

Megan McCombie, also from Dover, received her degree in early childhood education and will be working at a childcare center as a toddler teacher. “The most valued part of GBCC for me was how the course times and schedule are flexible for students like me who work full time while going to college.”

Emily Solomon who completed her associate degree in business administration with a certificate in leadership and management is currently employed at Service Credit Union, where she would like to continue with an added goal of helping out in the community.

Three out of six graduates who completed a certificate in motorcycle maintenance and repair attended the ceremony. All report having jobs in their field at Seacoast Harley-Davidson, Laconia Harley-Davidson and Monadnock Harley-Davidson.

After starting the program in 2021, graduate Amrit Singh of Newmarket earned a certificate in computer numeric Control taking classes while working full time and supporting his family. Singh, who came to the United States from India in 2017, also had to overcome a language barrier, learning English while earning his certificate. Adept at learning technology, he has always embraced education. “If you have learning capabilities, then you can learn something new every day,” he said. “For every new problem, there is a new solution.”

GBCC recognizes teaching, service and academic award winners at 2024 commencement

The following faculty, staff and students were recognized during Great Bay Community College’s 2024 Commencement Ceremonies:

Chancellor’s Award for Service Excellence was presented to:  Rebecca Clerkin, GBCC director of Library Services. Among the criteria, the award is given to a candidate who has demonstrated innovation in service to students and has made a positive impact on the college community. In her nomination letter, the nominee writes of Rebecca, “Consistently, throughout her 29+ years at Great Bay Community College, she has been thoroughly engaged and impactful in her collaborative work at the College, the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH), and Cross-College levels in addition to serving in her role as the Director of Library Services and her direct work with students and GBCC colleagues.”

Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to: Lynda Bonneau, department chair, Accounting and Business Administration.  The award is based on criteria including a demonstration of teaching innovation, leadership, an individual’s impact on students, community involvement, as well as service to the college.  Lynda began as a full-time Accounting Faculty and Program Coordinator at Great Bay Community College in the fall of 2017 and has served additionally in the Department Chair role beginning in the spring of 2019. In addition to the Accounting and Business programs, she recently has assumed oversight and leadership of the Hotel, Restaurant, and Event Management degree and certificate programs in collaboration with the Program Coordinator.

President’s Award for Outstanding Adjunct was presented to: Erik Hinnov, adjunct professor of English and the writing specialist in the College’s Center for Academic Planning and Support (CAPS). The award is given to an adjunct faculty member whose commitment to Great Bay Community College serves academic integrity and students needs in the greater interest of the teaching-learning environment. In addition to his role as an adjunct faculty and writing support specialist to students, Erik has represented Great Bay by participating in the Humanities Collaborative with UNH, and is currently the adjunct representative for Faculty Forum.

President’s Award for Special Contributions was presented to GBCC Athletic Director, Brian Scott. The award is given to a member of the college community whose endeavors have made a significant difference at the College. In addition to his role as Director of the GBCC Athletic department, Brian plays a crucial role with the Student Life Department of the College helping to lead the Student Government Association, Leadership Weekend, New Student Orientation, and other activities. In his nomination letter, his colleague writes “Brian has a keen ability to manage the day-to-day logistics while never losing an opportunity to connect with students.”

President’s Award for Outstanding Student was presented to Volodymyr Lysianskyi. The award is given to a member of the college community whose endeavors have made a significant difference at the College and to the community. Originally from Ukraine, Volodymyr arrived at Great Bay in August of 2022. He came to the U.S. seeking an opportunity to obtain higher education and experience a different part of the world. Today, he is graduating with an associate degree in engineering science. He also organized three fundraisers supporting victims of the earthquake in Turkey, flood victims in Libya, and initiatives for women’s empowerment and coordinated the installation of new recreational amenities to Great Bay’s Student Success Center.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE

About our Education Associate Degree

The Education degree program (K-12) is designed to prepare pre-service teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment and/or future study in the field of K-12 education. Successful graduates experience field work in public school classrooms in each education course taken as a way to connect theory into actual practice. Graduates of the associate degree program are eligible for certification as Educational Technician II with the designation as “highly qualified.”

Topics that are covered, beyond core requirements, seek to address the theories of how human beings learn, the compelling issues related to American education, the developmental stages of literacy acquisition from birth to grade 12, and an in-depth overview on issues related to special education law and students with special needs.

About our Education Programs

SMCC offers two education programs: Early Childhood Education and Education. The programs focus on different age/grade ranges, but both provide students with the foundational skills and experiences they need to enter their chosen fields. The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is designed for students who are interested in teaching children from 0-8 years of age, including students in grades K-3. The Education (EDUC) program is designed for students who are interested in exploring education more broadly and/or those who wish to teach older students in specialized fields like English or Math. Both programs focus on the essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions students need to make a difference in the lives of the children with whom they work. These skills are put to use as students engage in classroom settings and externships in the local community. Throughout each step of the way, students work with supportive and experienced faculty. Our goal is to create a community of learners who work (and play!) together with all students receiving the support they need to achieve their dreams.

Graduates of the ECE and EDUC programs pursue many different paths. Some enter the work force as Ed. Tech. II in public school systems throughout the state. Others choose to become infant, toddler, or preschool teachers. Some open their own early childhood centers. Others continue on to earn their Bachelor’s Degree and become certified teachers. The University of Maine at Farmington delivers their Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at SMCC. Students in the EDUC program often choose to continue on for their Bachelor’s through the University of Maine system. Graduation Outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of “best practice” in teaching that promotes optimal learning for all students.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the major issues in public education today that inform the organization of schools in the 21st century.
• Understand the federal and state laws that define resources and supports for special education students as defined by IDEA and understand the myriad of disabilities that are identified in students in public schools.
• Identify and select interventions that promote growth toward goals set out in an individual’s IEP.
• Understand the components of literacy acquisition from birth to grade 12 and understand how to think about teaching literacy for optimum learning with an eye toward developing competent and confident readers.
• Understand the need for collaboration with peers and colleagues as a tool to continually learn and perfect the craft of teaching.
• Use verbal and oral communication, interpersonal relationships and other related personal skills (such as self-discipline and time management) effectively .

Supporting Early Childhood Education Teachers

With a new associate degree in early childhood education, the University of Delaware is helping working professionals advance their careers and deliver high-quality care

Excellent early care and education (ECE) often begins with great teachers. Yet, according to research by University of Delaware faculty, just over one-third of all ECE centers meet national benchmarks for teacher degrees, and even fewer can prioritize staff professional development. 

With a new associate degree in early childhood education , University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is working to meet the demand for high-quality ECE teachers through a flexible, accessible and primarily online degree program designed for working professionals. 

This degree offering also comes at a critical time for Delaware teachers. To raise the overall quality of early childcare in the state, the Delaware Department of Education will soon require ECE professionals to hold a certificate in child development or an associate degree. 

ECE professionals in high-demand 

According to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2023 brief, employment in the childcare industry dropped by more than one-third during the first two years of the pandemic. Across the nation and within Delaware, many families still wait for months on early childcare waitlists, hoping that a coveted spot for their child will open up.

At CEHD’s Early Learning Center (ELC), co-directors Kelly Freel and Jessica Peace are excited about CEHD’s associate degree in early childhood education program. The program, they hope, will help encourage new professionals to enter the ECE field and help teachers deliver high-quality care in their current ECE centers. 

“High-quality care is only possible with a great team,” Freel said. “The heart and soul of the ELC are the teachers who partner so intimately with families and young children.”

Leia Heckman, a pediatric speech, language and feeding therapist and an ELC parent, couldn’t agree more. All three of her children have attended the ELC, and she is grateful for the excellent care and education that they have received. 

“Knowing that my kids are not only safe and cared for but also being educated is extremely important to me,” Heckman said. “It’s so important for our teachers to be educated. It’s one thing to keep a child safe, but it’s another thing to help them reach their developmental milestones and be kindergarten-ready. As a parent that works full time, I would not be able to do that.” 

Program experiences 

Designed for both working professionals and traditional students, the associate degree in early childhood education program gives students the skills to deliver high-quality ECE for children from birth to age 5 in center-based and home-based settings.

Through small classes, practical field experiences and partnerships with community early childhood programs, the program helps students advance their careers, facilitate high-quality care, gain real-world experience and join a supportive network of early childcare providers.

Jessica Slade, assistant professor in CEHD’s Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and associate in early childhood education program coordinator, emphasizes that CEHD designed the program with particular attention to first-generation and non-traditional students, including those who have already worked in the ECE field for many years. 

“It’s unfortunate, but many ECE professionals are often told that they’re not ‘meant for college’ and that the work that they do is not valued by our society,” Slade said. “We want to change that perception and provide a degree program that is not only accessible to them, but meaningful as well.” 

For this reason, flexibility is a key aspect of the program. Students can choose fully online courses without set meeting times, hybrid courses with some in-person meeting times during the evenings or weekends or traditional in-person courses during the day. Depending on their schedules and career goals, they can complete the program part-time or full-time. 

Significantly, students working in an early childcare setting can also complete their field experience requirements at their workplace. If they are not working, they can complete their field placement on CEHD’s Children’s Campus, at the ELC or Lab School . 

“The program allows students to use their classroom experience to support their learning in their UD classes,” Slade said. “For example, after they’re introduced to a new concept, they can look within their own classroom and their own practices to complete their assignment in a meaningful, personalized way based on what they’re observing and experiencing in that moment. The curriculum is open-ended in nature to allow for that individuality, but still stays true to the learning objectives of the course.”

The program also offers supportive, developmental advising from UD faculty, which considers students’ current skill sets and places them in courses that best suit their needs. 

Supporting ECE professionals 

UD and the state of Delaware are also working to ease the financial barriers that prevent students from pursuing a college degree. For example, Delaware residents can apply for funding through the state’s Student Excellence Equals Degree (SEED) scholarship program. SEED scholarships, funded by the state, cover tuition for eligible full-time students enrolled in UD’s associate degree programs. Students who complete their associate degree at UD can continue to a UD bachelor’s degree program and use SEED funds to cover an additional year of education. 

Similarly, Delaware’s Early Childhood Innovation Center also offers a statewide scholarship and incentive program to support members of the early childhood workforce in attending college. And, UD offers need-based financial support for associate degree students through federal grants and loans. This financial aid can cover tuition or other costs, like textbooks and supplies.

CEHD is also working to support the ECE field broadly. In February 2023, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded CEHD’s DIEEC and five other partners a cooperative agreement to establish and operate the first-of-its-kind National Early Care and Education Workforce Center . With a $30 million investment over five years, the center will provide technical assistance and research to advance the recruitment and retention of a diverse, qualified and effective early childhood care and education workforce.

UMF Professor Patti Bailie honored by the Maine Environmental Education Association for advancing the field of nature-based education

FARMINGTON, ME  (May 14, 2024)— Patti Bailie, associate professor of early childhood education at the University of Maine at Farmington, recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maine Environmental Education Association. The honor was awarded at MEEA’s annual environmental education conference on May 10, at the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences in Hinckley.

MEEA is the statewide professional association that advances the field of environmental and outdoor learning and the state affiliate to the North American Association for Environmental Education.

“We are so pleased to announce that Dr. Patti Bailie has been selected for a Lifetime Achievement Award from our organization to recognize her significant contributions in her career to advancing the field of environmental education and outdoor learning.  Patti is not only a critical thought leader in the state of Maine, but is widely recognized as a national leader in the field of early childhood nature-based education and we are so incredibly lucky she lives and works in Maine,” said Olivia Griset, co-director of the MEEA.

Bailie has worked in the field of early childhood environmental education for 30 years. She is dedicated to nature-based education, its value to a child’s educational development, and seeing it integrated in schools and early childhood programs.

“I am so honored to be receiving this award. MEEA is a wonderful organization that supports nature-based education for children in the state of Maine. Recognizing my contribution to this field means so much. Since I moved to Maine, I have enjoyed working with pre-service teachers at UMF for the past ten years as they become teachers who embrace outdoor learning in their public school classrooms. I look forward to the continued success that MEEA has in supporting outdoor learning in all settings,” said Bailie.

Bailie joined UMF in 2014 and has helped pioneer the nature-based learning program and natural outdoor learning environment at the new UMF Sweatt-Winter Child Care and Early Learning Center.  The Center provides quality child care for the area and prepares crucial early childhood educators with its state-of-the-art lab school.

Previous to her work at Farmington, Bailie worked at three different nature centers in the Midwest. In addition, she was the assistant director of the Nature-based Early Childhood Certificate Program at Antioch University New England; founding director of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Preschool in Milwaukee, Wis.; and co-director of the Early Childhood Outdoors Institute in Omaha, Neb.

Her consulting work includes working closely with Sesame Street on nature-based programs for young children. She initially contributed nature-based programming ideas to their writers for their 40 th  anniversary season and more recently for a new venture called “Nature Explorers” that has aired on HBO and will be aired on PBS this summer.

She is co-author of “Partnering with Nature in Early Childhood: A Guide to Outdoor Experiences” and “Evaluating Natureness: Measuring the Quality of Nature-based Classrooms in Pre-K through 3 rd  Grade.” She also contributed two chapters to David Sobel’s book “Nature Preschools and Forest Kindergartens: The Handbook for Outdoor Learning” and was part of the writing team for the “Nature-Based Preschool Professional Practice Guidebook.”

Dr. Bailie has presented widely on the topic of nature-based education and serves on the advisory board of the Natural Start Alliance.
