How Does a GoPro Work?

Avatar photo

GoPro cameras work like any other camera, such as a digital, DSLR, mirrorless, or phone camera. You can simply turn it on and start recording videos and taking pictures. However, GoPros are unique because they are built explicitly to film action content.

Hi, my name is Larry. I’m your neighborhood GoPro expert who’s been using GoPro cameras for nearly a decade. After buying my first GoPro HERO4 Black in 2014, I now use my GoPro HERO10 Black daily to record videos of my outdoor adventures.

In today’s comprehensive guide, I’ll explain how a GoPro works and how it’s different from other cameras.

Let’s dive right into it!

What is a GoPro and How Does It Work?

What kind of camera is a gopro, what can a gopro be used for, how do you use a gopro for beginners, can gopro take pictures, how long can a gopro record, does gopro record sound, what do i need for a gopro, is gopro easy to use, closing thoughts.

A GoPro is a compact, portable, and durable camera that can be mounted to your chest, helmet , surfboard, bike handlebars, and much more. GoPros are popular among action enthusiasts and athletes because of their portability, strength, and convenience.

Rather than holding a bulky DSLR camera as you go on adventures around the world, you can fit your GoPro in your pocket and pull it out whenever you want to shoot a video or take a picture.

Furthermore, GoPros offer high-resolution recording and photo-taking capabilities, so you don’t have to sacrifice much quality for comfort.

GoPro cameras work just like any other camera. They have a power button that allows you to turn the camera on and off. They also have a shutter button that allows you to record video.

Furthermore, the majority of GoPro cameras (there have been over 20 models) are equipped with an LCD touchscreen that allows you to play back your footage and change your camera’s settings.

Overall, GoPros are extremely easy to use, and it shouldn’t take more than a few hours to get the hang of all the settings and features.

Most GoPro cameras have an external battery that you can take out and replace. In addition, all GoPros use a microSD card that saves and stores your footage.

GoPro cameras are classified as action cameras. They are the most popular brand of action cameras and are used by millions of action enthusiasts and athletes around the world.

This is because GoPros are incredibly lightweight, compact, and durable. As I mentioned earlier, you can fit a GoPro inside your pocket. The newest GoPro model, the HERO10 Black, is 2.8 inches wide, 2.2 inches tall, and 1.3 inches deep. It’s exceedingly tiny and can fit in the palm of your hand.

Furthermore, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of different GoPro attachments and accessories. So no matter what sport you’re playing or adventure you’re filming, you can find an attachment to use your GoPro without your hands.

For example, I went skydiving last summer and attached my GoPro to my helmet using a GoPro helmet attachment.

Isn’t that awesome?

Most GoPro cameras are also waterproof. Since GoPro released the HERO5 Black in 2016, each GoPro model afterward is completely waterproof out of the box. You can check out my guide on Are GoPros Waterproof to see the complete list of waterproof GoPros and how deep each model can go.

Water sports enthusiasts that want to record footage need an action camera because other types of digital cameras are not water-resistant. So I always bring my GoPro with me whenever I go snorkeling or surfing.

In essence, action cameras are built for vloggers, cyclists, divers, and anybody else who plays sports or enjoys outdoor activities.

GoPros are best used to record action content that requires movement. This is because GoPros have image stabilization features that automatically stabilize shaky footage of your recordings.

In addition, GoPros feature a wide-angle lens that allows you to capture more of your surrounding environment while still being close to the action.

However, GoPros aren’t exclusively used to record action content. GoPros are popular among casual vloggers that want to film their vacations or daily lives because of how portable these cameras are.

Not everybody wants to carry a massive camera with them when they shoot vlogs, so a GoPro acts as an excellent compromise. Although you can adjust your video and picture settings, such as the exposure and aperture, GoPro’s automatic settings work perfectly in most situations.

This means that beginner and expert videographers can use GoPro cameras effectively. Once you’ve finished a filming session, you can easily upload your footage to your phone using GoPro’s mobile device Quik, or transfer it to your computer with a microSD card adapter.

Then, you can either share your videos with your friends or edit them to create beautiful sequences and montages.

Here’s a list of activities you can record using a GoPro:

  • Skateboarding
  • Snowboarding
  • Wakeboarding
  • Mountain biking
  • And much more

If you recently got a GoPro and have no experience using cameras, you may be totally confused about how to get started.

The latest GoPro models feature:

  • Mode (Power) Button – A button on the side of your GoPro that powers off and on your camera.
  • Shutter/Select Button – A button on the top of your GoPro that allows you to start recording video or taking pictures.
  • Camera Status Light – A light that flashes red which indicates your camera is currently recording.
  • Camera Status Screen – A front screen on your camera that shows what camera setting you’re on and how long your current video has been recording.

Here’s an in-depth look at all the components of the new GoPro HERO10 Black.

gopro homework

This graphic explains each feature and component the GoPro HERO10 has and where it’s physically located on the camera.

Check out this video for an in-depth tutorial on how to use a GoPro HERO10 Black:

If you have a different GoPro model and want to learn how to use it, go to YouTube and type in “ [Your Camera Model] Guide ”. For example, if you own a GoPro HERO8 Black, type in “GoPro HERO 8 Black Guide”.

Now that you understand how does a GoPro work and what it’s used for, I want to answer a few additional questions that may be lingering on your mind. This will help to clarify any confusion you’re facing about GoPro cameras.

Although GoPros are best known for recording video, they can take pictures too. Most GoPro cameras allow you to take JPG pictures or RAW pictures if you want better post-processing and editing capabilities. However, since GoPro’s have a wide-angle lens, the pictures will look slightly different than what you’re used to seeing on your phone.

GoPros can usually record for 50 minutes to 150 minutes, depending on which resolution you use to record. You can check out my guide on How Long Can a GoPro Record for more information on how long your specific GoPro and resolution records.

All GoPro cameras have a built-in mic that can record sound. This means you don’t need to purchase an external microphone to record audio with your GoPro. However, don’t expect the best audio quality with the built-in mic. If you want clearer audio, you’ll need to purchase an external mic which ranges from $10 to $100.

The one item that you absolutely need for your GoPro is a microSD card. Unfortunately, GoPros do not come with a microSD card unless you purchase a bundle that specifically includes one. You won’t be able to record or use your GoPro without a microSD card so make sure you purchase one that’s compatible with your GoPro .

One of the best features of GoPro cameras is how easy they are to use. Even without any prior camera experience, you can pick up a GoPro and begin shooting amazing content right away. As such, GoPros are extremely beginner-friendly and allow you to record your favorite moments conveniently.

GoPros are outstanding compact action cameras that are durable and offer high-resolution recording. I hope you enjoyed my guide on how a GoPro works and now truly understand why they’re so globally popular.

But now I’d love to hear your thoughts on GoPro cameras: Do you own a GoPro camera? If so, which model do you own, and what type of content do you record?

Do you have any further questions you’d like me to answer about GoPros? I’m all ears, and I am happy to assist you with anything related to GoPro cameras. Leave a comment below and let me know!

The 14 Most Important GoPro Tips for Beginners

After a decade of experience playing with DSLR cameras and GoPro’s, I’ve created a bunch of valuable GoPro tips for beginners  to help you step up your video making game with GoPro.

From setting up your camera, to telling a story, to where to find music for your video, these 14 GoPro Tips will help you improve your video production process substantially, and eventually make better videos .

Tell A Story

Watch this tutorial to learn how to create engaging videos:

GoPro Tips: 5 Rules for Engaging Videos

Everything goes around a story – there’s no film without one. People are curious and you need to tell a story to catch their interest. And so I ask you: What story do you want to tell with your GoPro?

You need to be able to answer that in a sentence or two. That could be going surfing with a bunch of friends on a sunny Sunday. It’s simple, but it has a beginning, middle and end. That’s all you need. Breathtaking shots can only make it better. So, focus on your story!

Story Structure:

  • Introduction: Character introductions, setting and genre establishment.
  • Climax:  This is a turning point in the movie. It’s where conflict is discovered and addressed, ideally in a way that keeps your viewer intensely glued to the screen waiting to find out what happens next.
  • Conclusion: Problems are solved, winners and losers, messages and morals, sequels and prequels.

How to Capture Your Summer Adventures (3 GoPro Tips)

Plan Your Shots

Most people do absolutely no planning, no thinking, no story, no preparation, nothing. This is why they make bad videos. This is why they make boring videos that fade away with the majority of the content out there. Taking this route makes the likelihood of creating a good video wishful thinking. If you commit to being a little more creative and to trying a little bit harder, your videos will be 10 times better.

How to you plan your shots

  • If you are creating something complex → a storyboard will help you keep things clean and organized. In it you can have every scene you intend to shoot, camera movements, characters and much more. You can use Storyboard Fountain that easily allows you to create storyboards on your phone or PC.
  • If you are creating a simple video →  you may not need to note everything down for simple videos. But make sure your shots will have an easy to follow story line with an intro, body and end.

Use A Fast SD Card

Using a video optimized microSD card is as important as ensuring the battery is charged before you start a shoot. Some microSD cards are not compatible with higher frame rates or resolutions because of their lower speed ratings.

SD card do you need

In general you need a microSD with a speed rating of Class 10 or V30. The illustration below shows you the corresponding video formats for every video format.

In this article I talk about SD cards optimized for GoPro. Make sure you take a look.

Illustration reference: www.sdcard.org

 Stay Always Charged

Battery life may be better in newer models but it’s still not enough to support a three-hour time lapse shoot or an extended 4k production. There are other ways to drain your GoPro battery super fast, but thankfully these few tips will help you optimize your camera and extend its battery life:

  • Only turn your camera on when you want to film by using the Quick Capture function (from HERO5 above)
  • Turn off Wifi, Bluetooth, Voice Control and GPS
  • Keep GoPro batteries warm (pockets work well)
  • Turn off the display (if not needed)
  • Use high capacity batteries
  • Get yourself an extended battery

….more battery life tips in this article …

Pick A Frame Rate And Stick With It

Download The GoPro Cheat Sheet [Free PDF] – to see what frame rates you need for your shot in every occasion.

The best way to decide your shooting frame rate is to figure out at what frame rate your final video will be rendered. If there are no specialty slow motion scenes or effects, keep it simple – 30fps is perfect.

If you plan to have a few slow motion scenes, then switch to 120fps or 240fps when needed.

What I tend to do when I’m not sure whether I want some scenes to be in slow motion is that I keep it at 60fps. In this way I can half the speed of whatever clip later in post production (I know it’s not a lot – you’ve got to compromise) while I keep only one fixed settings on my camera.

Keep It Short – 10 Seconds Clip

Your shots are too long; way too long! Make them shorter. How many times have you seen amateur films shot from the same angle for five long minutes? It’s painful. I’m not that guy; you shouldn’t be either.

Take a second to think about how long a shot lasts in an actual professional video. It’s seconds! This is why ESPN uses 45 different cameras pointed at one game.

I challenge you to find a TV show or movie that uses the same camera angle for more than 10 seconds . It’s rare. So, why are you?

Challenge! Next time you’re shooting a video, record for no more than 10 seconds, then move. If you have a shot list like we’ve talked about, you’ll have a ton of great angles to choose from. With longer scenes, film the same shot from two or three different angles. It’s way more watchable!

Create Interest

Some videographers feel like they need to lay out the whole story in the first 10 seconds. It’s really not necessary. I find it’s better to get the viewer’s brain firing up by opening the door for questions or making them draw their own conclusions about what they’re seeing.

Excellent videos take you on a journey of discovery. Bad videos give you all the answers right at the beginning.

Great Lighting = Great Shots

Light plays a crucial role in photography. It’s the one element that can make or break your shoot if it’s not harnessed correctly and strategically.

Some key tips here:

  • Shoot at golden hour
  • Watch your white balance
  • Use color gels
  • Avoid light-polluted settings lens flare

Read the following article to adjust Low Light settings: 4 Recommended GoPro Low Light Setting (HERO 7/8/9/10/11) .

If Audio Matters, Use An External Microphone

One of the GoPro fails is its internal microphone. As mentioned in the full microphone article , the solution to this problem (if audio matters to you) is to get a little external microphone. There are different types microphones depending of what you’d like to achieve. You can find more information about this topic on the full article, and here below are 3 external mics that we recommend for capturing better audio:

EDUTIGE Compact Microphone

This is a mic that is good for recording action cameras, DSLRs, and for use with GoPro editions. It is compact and ideal for capturing audio for YouTube or Vlogs.

EDUTIGE ETM-001 Microphone - Omnidirectional 3.5mm 3-Pole(TRS) Microphone for GoPro, DSLR, Mirrorless Camera or Digital Audio Recorder

  • Small, lightweight and robust; No extra power supply required
  • APPLICATION: Ideal for recording meeting, lecture, or interview & great for capturing...
  • STYLE: small, light, sturdy, plug-and-play

Sony Lavalier Microphone

This simple clip microphone has over 1,200 positive Amazon reviews and is recommended by GoPro. It is perfect for interviews as it quickly attaches to your shirt and is hands-free.

Sony Compact Stereo Lavalier Microphone ECMLV1,Black, Small

  • Omni-directional for high-qualitiy stereo sound pick up
  • Included wind-screen to reduce wind noise
  • 360-degree rotation Clip for freedom of attacment angle

REMOVU Wireless Microphone

Removu RM-M1+A1 Wireless Microphone and Receiver for GoPro Hero4, Hero3+ & Hero3

  • This device fits GoPro HERO3, HERO3 plus and HERO4 only. NOT for HERO 5 and later...
  • Maximum distance is about 40 Yards depending on environment
  • Powered by included Lithium battery, and runs more than 6 hours

This is a wireless microphone kit that is inexpensive and easy to use. It is designed for the GoPro HERO3, HERO3+, and HERO4 cameras (not the HERO5 or later models). The kit includes a receiver that attaches to the back of your GoPro camera and a microphone with a built-in transmitter.

To connect your microphone to the GoPro you’ll need a mic adapter. Find the best ones in the article below: 4 Official GoPro Audio Adapter for External Microphones .

Stabilize Your Clips

Unless it’s actually used as a filming technique, there’s nothing more dizzying than having to sit through a whole video that looks like it was shot during an earthquake. This is why image stabilization was invented. This is why you need to use it.

Using a gimbal is a fantastic way to stabilize your videos and achieve professional-looking results. A gimbal is a device that mechanically stabilizes your camera, counteracting any unwanted movement or shaking during filming. This ensures that your footage remains smooth and steady , even when you’re capturing action shots or moving through different environments.

In low light, switch the stabilization off to prevent weird jello effects like the one in the image below:

Use A System For Organizing Your Files

Everyone has their own “system” of organization. While I feel it’s important to use whatever method works best for you, I’d like to share the way that has worked for me for years.

How I organize my GoPro files

I keep an event for every shooting for each year. And within the event folder I keep the raw content separate from the editing files and the final exported product.

Pick Your Music Before You Start Editing

A common oversight in post-production is not incorporating music sooner in the process. A movie soundtrack can set a scene’s tone or mood. So it goes without saying that a film without music and audio effects might appear (or sound) incomplete.

Free Copyrighted music and sound effects can be found on the Youtube Audio Library.

The good stuff is paid – these are the three best music sites that work for me: Epidemic Sound , Artlist and Audiojungle .

Don’t Overuse Transitions & Effects

Editing video with a straightforward cut is the most useful, the most common and the easiest way to transition from scene to scene. But because all projects are different, there are times when you need to up your transition game.

Don’t worry though, we’ve got you covered on that too! Check out our Pro Editing Pack for custom editing transitions and titles…

Color Grade Your Footage

Color grading is where you create your video’s aesthetic. It’s an entirely optional process, especially if film realism is your goal. Of course, color grading does help express a visual tone or mood to heighten the narrative. For example, boosted orange and blue tones could be used to enhance a travel story.

Among professional film editors, there are dedicated teams of people just for color grading films – they’re called Film Colorists. So you can imagine how widely used this niche can be.

This is our best selling filter pack which includes 106 LUTs designed by our filmmakers at ProjectGO, for GoPro style videos. We made it available in various formats .3DL/.CUBE/.XML to cover most editing programs on the market.

Once installed, you can easily apply (and customize!) these color presets with a single click in Premiere Pro CC, Photoshop, FCPX, After Effects CC, DaVinci Resolve, and more.

Our cinematic color grading pack offers over 100 color tones to cover most GoPro activities.

Great tips and thanks for passing them on. I have had GoPro’s for about 10 years but used them for still pics only. Recently purchased the 7Black and have been experimenting with putting together stills and video into short videos. I have a long way to go to get even remotely close to proficient but it provides hours of entertainment just putting the 5 to 10 minute videos together. And, by the way, even with the few quirks, the 7 Black is a great camera.

It is a lot of fun, Bruce. I hope you keep the passion rolling and make great content!

Tutorials with a curriculum or homework?

Hi r/gopro !

I bought my first gopro about 2 months ago, and this is the first time I've been trying anything remotely creative. I take most of my photos on my phone and I've never edited video before. Basically I know nothing.

I started out just messing around and have recently been looking to youtube for tutorials. I've learned how to do some simple things using the gopro editing software, like slow motion or turn time lapse photos into a video, but most of the tutorials are on very specific topics and imply that you know what you want to do, you're just not sure how to do it technically.

What I would really love is a series of tutorials that first tell you what the most important things to learn are, and then maybe even give you some "homework" like, "go shoot 3 different video clips and edit them together in 1 clip" or "go shoot similar videos at these three different settings so you can really understand the differences".

Does anyone know of something like that? Or can you reccommend some tutorials which helped you get started?
