My Dream House- An Essay

I always imagine how my future house will be. A home is a place surrounded by the people one loves. A house is not made beautiful by its furniture or decor, but by the people that live inside it. My dream house should be a house that I can share with my family when I grow old. I always dream of a wooden house in the hilly areas. My dream house should be the one facing a small river. Through the windows, I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains. My dream house would have a small garden where I will grow my own vegetables and fruits.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

Privilege, Understanding, and Historical Change

In The Dream House , the more privilege characters have, the less perspective they seem to have on life. Patricia Wiley , for example, has lived a life of privilege: she inherited a farm and, despite the farm’s lack of success, employs Black workers to attend to her and her husband Richard . She believes that the death of one employee, Black dairy worker Grace , was an accident and that the departure of Looksmart …

Truth, Accountability, and Memory

In The Dream House , characters can only hold themselves and each other accountable once they know the truth about the past. However, the characters can only make subjective judgments about what happened in the past, since memory often fails and—to complicate matters—people often lie. From the beginning, the novel makes clear that its characters’ memories fail: aging white South African Patricia Wiley can’t remember certain facts about her farm, while her husband Richard is…

Parental Love vs. Romantic Love

The Dream House compares and contrasts parental love with romantic love, ultimately characterizing the former as substantial and meaningful and the latter as fickle and illusory. The primary relationship in the novel is between Patricia , an elderly white South African farm owner, and Looksmart , a Black South African man who grew up on Patricia’s farm. Patricia only married her husband, Richard , because she was pregnant; after their baby Rachel was stillborn, she…

Rebirth and New Beginnings

The Dream House examines the idea of “rebirth,” ultimately questioning whether or not new beginnings truly exist. The question shows Richard’s dementia, but it also suggests that Richard and Patricia are dead in a metaphorical sense—emotionally, spiritually, or otherwise—and thus might be reborn. Indeed, as Richard loses his memories, he becomes more and more infantile: he…

The Dream House

by Craig Higginson

  • The Dream House Summary

Patricia and Richard Wiley , two older white South Africans, live on many acres of farmland in KwaZulu-Natal. They are planning on leaving the next day for Durban, a seaside city, where there is another property that belongs to Patricia via her late father. Patricia has sold the farmland to developers and wishes to spend her twilight years in the Durban house by the sea. She has a very unhappy marriage with Richard, for not only does he currently have dementia, but he has always been callous, lazy, and arrogant. Also at the farmhouse are Bheki , the black driver and handyman of sorts, and Beauty , the black housemaid who also acts as a nurse to Richard. They are planning on going to Durban as well.

The novel begins with Patricia contemplating her last day and night at the farmhouse. She pays a visit to her lover, John Ford, the retired headmaster of the local school. They had been conducting their affair for over thirty years, though they had not been intimate for fifteen of them; it seems to Patricia that his late wife has only gained in saintliness over the years, and it is tough to read John’s feelings sometimes. Before she leaves, he gives her a letter that he tells her to read only when she gets to Durban.

In the evening, Richard wanders off into the property. Through Richard's addled thoughts, the reader discerns he is planning on digging up the grave of the only child he and Patricia had: a baby girl named Rachel , who was born dead. He does not locate the grave, accidentally digging up a dog grave instead. Patricia sends Beauty and Bheki out into the darkness to look for him.

In the meantime, Patricia receives a visitor. Looksmart is a well-dressed, successful black man who was born to one of Patricia and Richard’s employees years ago. Patricia loved him from the moment he was born and treated him like a son, even though, as he grew older, their relationship grew a little more complicated. She helped him get into Ford’s school and nurtured his intellectual and creative growth. At nineteen, he left, and she was never sure why.

Looksmart has resented Patricia for years, resenting what he saw as her superior attitude and the complicated nature of their biracial, post-apartheid-era relationship. He has come with his long-nurtured hate to call her attention to the reality of something that happened on the farm many years ago, and which precipitated his abrupt departure. He intends to challenge Patricia’s hazy memories of the event and to force her to apologize and feel the guilt he believes she needs to feel. He also plans to tell her he is part of the development company that has bought the land and that he is looking forward to razing most of it.

Their encounter in the farmhouse sitting room is at times awkward, uncomfortable, tense, emotional, and confusing. Looksmart asks Patricia to recall the death of Grace , Beauty’s older sister, many years ago. All Patricia remembers is that the girl apparently provoked one of the dogs and it attacked her and she died. Looksmart explains that Richard actually raped Grace, Beauty discovered it, and when Grace ran away, Richard let the dog loose on her. Looksmart was in love with Grace at the time and they were planning on telling Patricia that they wanted to get married. This was so traumatic for Looksmart that he left the farm.

They call in Beauty who hesitantly confirms the story. Patricia eventually comes to acknowledge this as truth, and that perhaps she had a role to play in the tragedy even though she did not understand it. She and Looksmart tentatively come to a sort of tacit understanding about their difficult shared past; they cannot change anything, but they know they did love each other. She is even pleased to hear about his role in the development company and does not seem to mind that the whole landscape will be altered. After several hours, Looksmart departs.

Later, Patricia questions Beauty further. Beauty reveals that Grace did not really love Looksmart, but Beauty did not want to destroy the man’s illusions by saying that earlier. She explains Grace often had sex with Richard because he gave her money and she was just trying to survive. Most terribly, Grace was pregnant with Richard’s child and he did not want her to have it. When she insisted she would, he set the dog on her. Patricia is shocked to hear this truth, but it makes sense to her.

When Richard comes back to the house, he and Patricia have words. She is upset that he tried to dig up Rachel, and she accuses him of murdering Grace. He says that is a lie and curses her. She screams for him to get out of her sight, and she wishes Looksmart were back.

The next morning, the police summon Patricia to John Ford’s house. It appears he committed suicide, and he left a note telling his secretary not to disturb Patricia with the news. The secretary tells Patricia that John was dying of cancer. Patricia is horrified; she considers staying on for the funeral and delaying the move to Durban, but eventually she realizes she does not want to deal with this situation. She later reads John’s letter, which he obviously wrote knowing what he was going to do, and she wonders if she ever really knew him.

In the morning, Richard, Patricia, Beauty, and Bheki prepare to depart. Patricia has had Bheki dig up Rachel’s coffin and safely place it in a small trunk that she will have buried at a church in Durban. Though no one else knows it yet, Bheki is not planning on living in Durban. He spoke with Looksmart when the younger man was there the prior evening, and Looksmart told him not to linger with the whites: if he were to stay on, he’d give him a job.

Patricia asks Beauty one more time about the event in the past, particularly why she didn’t say anything. Beauty explains that she was young and needed a job here. Patricia sighs and tells her that she is going to put Richard in a home when they get to Durban.

In the final scene, Bheki is driving the car away from the property and Looksmart is driving his car to the property when they cross paths. Patricia has Bheki toss the keys to him. Neither Patricia nor Looksmart says much, even though the air is electric with emotion.

Queering the Archive

In In the Dream House , Machado discusses the archival silence—the erasure of queer narratives, especially the lack of representation of abuse within those relationships. As Machado is an academic and writer in graduate programs, she is familiar with the notion of the archive, its heteronormative and white selectivity, and its perpetuation of biased, abusive ideologies. She composes her memoir around queer or nontraditional theorists, writers, and artists to question the reach of the archive and the harm it does to queer individuals by mis- or underrepresenting their narratives. In the Dream House then becomes Machado’s contribution to a queered archive in which abuse is openly discussed as present among queer relationships.

Long Essay On My Dream House 500 Words In English

If I were to choose and describe my dream house, I would choose a house according to my personality. It helps people to get an impression about you, and this leaves a long-lasting effect on others.

I would love a house in Frankton, Indiana. There are so many reasons why I love this area. It quiet, and there are not many people around this locality. Everything is within walking distance, and that is where I have grown up. These are some of the reasons why I would love to stay in this rural community.

I love gardening, and having a yard full of trees and plants has been my dream. Freshly bloomed flowers cast a magic spell on me, and I am relaxed when I see it. I would like to have a little treehouse for my kids to play in.

For my living room, I would like a cozy setup. The living room would have a plasma screen television paired with a black leather couch, a white rug, and two recliners. I would love a beautiful wooden finished dark floor—a coffee table, preferably black colour, with white coasters. As I am a plant fanatic, I love succulents and indoor plants. A mini cactus sitting directly in the middle of the table.

I would love to imagine a little hallway and a little bit of a staircase that would lead to the kitchen and dining room. I love ceramic wares, and I want the utensils to be aesthetic. A beautiful granite island top table in the kitchen with some small plants in ceramic bowls would be the perfect set up.

I look to cook, and I would love to invite my full family for dinner, and we would sit around this long skinny table and have a laugh while enjoying the meal.

It was a childhood dream on mine to have a fully furnished basement that people would easily mistake for a bedroom—a movie screen, with a superb sound system. There must be space in the basement where my dogs would run around and play. A bunk bed would be beautiful for the kids to enjoy.

In my garage, I want to have enough room for my car and my two-wheeler. I would also like to do my laundry in the garage, as the garage offers the ideal space one needs to do their laundry.

Coming to the main rooms, I want a study, where my books for study, books for reading in my free time, CDs of my movie collection would be kept. There must be a cozy corner in that room, where there will be a small couch by the window, where I can relax and spend my own sweet time.

The bedroom will be sweet and, with a queen-size bed and a lot of pillows, I have no such specifications about it. Just an addition to my bedroom would be a tiny bed for my dogs.

All in all, I want a sober and peaceful house where I can turn into a home.

Dream House Essay in English

Home , the place one spends more time in their life and shares special moments with family. Where one expects to live permanently carefree, feel protected under the roof of their house. Here are some sample essays on dream house.

100 Words Essay On Dream House

I'm always imagining how my future home will look. A home is a place where one is surrounded by the people they care about. The people who live in a house make it beautiful, not the furniture or decor. My ideal home would be one that I could share with my family after I come back from work.

I've always wanted a hillside wooden house. My ideal home would be one that overlooks a small river. I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains through the windows. My ideal home would include a small garden in which I could grow my own vegetables and fruits.

200 Words Essay On Dream House

Dream House Essay in English

One day I want to have a home that makes me feel well and where I can be safe and happy with my family. I want to live in a big white house with blue shutters. My room will be overlooking the river so that I can paint the scenery. I want a blue coloured porch wrapped around the house where I can drink tea and watch the sunrise and sunset everyday.

My Ideal Home

My ideal home would be welcoming to my parents, grandparents, and siblings. My ideal home is one in which all of us can live happily and comfortably. The house I envision would be quite large, with four bedrooms and a large common area. The house should be outfitted with all modern conveniences. It should have a large TV, a home theatre system, and a Playstation.

The walls of the house will be painted in light colours to make it appear bright. Every room will have enough light bulbs and lamps. I also want a chandelier in the common room and a large sofa where everyone can sit and watch TV together. My grandparents are avid readers. My ideal home would have a library with a large number of books.

500 Words Essay On Dream House

The house is where we stay with our loved ones. A good house is one that makes the person feel at ease. It is a place where we can seek shelter from rain, heat, and storms, among other things. Everyone has their own preferences for the type of home they prefer to live in.

Location Of My Dream House

I want to live in the mountains of Switzerland. I want to live in a picturesque village named Grindewald where Alps mountain is located. I want to live in a small community where everyone knows each other, and people are very kind and helpful.

I want to raise cows on the hillsides. Every morning, I want to wake up to the melodious tinkle of a cowbell around my ears. When I walk out of my room, I want to stand on the lawn of the backyard and breathe in the fresh air. I want a warm and cosy house of comfort and peace.

The beautiful glacier can be seen from my terris's window. Why do I want this type of house? Because I enjoy seeing the sunrise and sunset, as well as the people working at their workplace. The breeze from the trees planted by the people of the village behind my dream house will be refreshing every day. It would be fantastic. I chose to build my home near the village and river so that I can feel refreshed and grateful to be surrounded by nature. In my ideal home, I also want to plant my own fruits and vegetables.

How My Dream House Would Look

First and foremost, my house would be located in the woods, away from everyone else. I'd also live in a contemporary-looking log cabin. Living in a log cabin has always been a dream of mine. I also want to live in a contemporary home, so combining the two would be ideal for me.

My dream home will be large and spacious. I want my house to be built on a mountain with as many green materials as possible to help protect the environment. I also want my house to be located away from the hustle and bustle of a big city, but not too far from civilization. This house style, which I believe suits my personality, is more antique and sophisticated, with a touch of simplicity and aesthetic. The house will have beautiful interiors and all of the amenities, such as a kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, and a bonfire place.

My backyard would be open and have a view of the mountain and valleys. There would be a bonfire in the centre surrounded by chairs, and a barbeque place. I want a swimming pool and a jacuzzi in my backyard.

My room would be the biggest one out of the 5 rooms I want in my home. It would have black coloured walls and blue curtains. There would be a small bed for my dog in the corner of my room. I want to have a common room where everyone can sit and watch TV, spend some quality time with the family and have a huge wooden dining table in the corner of the room.

Darkness and Light: Exploring the Depths of Human Endurance in “Night”

This essay about Elie Wiesel’s “Night” explores the profound themes of human resilience and the triumph of the human spirit amidst the darkness of the Holocaust. Through vivid narration, Wiesel illustrates the horrors faced by individuals in concentration camps, while also highlighting moments of resilience, kindness, and hope. The essay emphasizes the importance of bearing witness to history and reflects on universal themes of suffering, identity, and moral responsibility. Ultimately, “Night” serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

How it works

“Night” by Elie Wiesel stands as a beacon illuminating the darkest corners of human history. In this compelling memoir, Wiesel masterfully narrates his journey through the abyss of the Holocaust, offering readers a profoundly moving account of the human experience in the face of unimaginable suffering. Through a unique blend of personal reflection and historical documentation, “Night” not only unveils the horrors of the Holocaust but also sheds light on the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of hope.

At the heart of “Night” lies the exploration of human resilience amidst the most dire circumstances. Wiesel’s narrative vividly portrays the struggles, fears, and agonies endured by himself and countless others in the concentration camps. Through his poignant descriptions, readers are transported into a world where despair and death loom at every turn. However, woven within the fabric of this darkness are threads of resilience, courage, and solidarity. In the face of unimaginable brutality, Wiesel depicts the small acts of kindness, the bonds of friendship, and the flickers of hope that sustained individuals through the darkest of nights. Through these narratives, “Night” serves not only as a testimony to the horrors of the Holocaust but also as a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Furthermore, “Night” underscores the importance of bearing witness to history. Wiesel’s decision to share his story is rooted in a deep sense of responsibility to ensure that the atrocities of the Holocaust are neither forgotten nor repeated. By recounting his experiences with unflinching honesty, he compels readers to confront the grim realities of genocide, persecution, and the consequences of unchecked hatred. Through his words, Wiesel challenges us to stand as witnesses to the past, to acknowledge the suffering of millions, and to recognize the enduring impact of history on the present. In doing so, “Night” not only honors the memory of those who perished but also serves as a powerful call to action against intolerance, injustice, and indifference.

Moreover, “Night” transcends its historical context to resonate with universal themes of suffering, resilience, and the search for meaning. While Wiesel’s narrative is deeply rooted in his personal journey through the Holocaust, its significance extends far beyond the confines of one man’s experience. Through his reflections on faith, identity, and the nature of evil, Wiesel invites readers to grapple with fundamental questions about the human condition and the complexities of moral responsibility. In confronting these existential dilemmas, “Night” becomes more than a memoir; it becomes a mirror through which we examine our own beliefs, values, and perceptions of the world around us.

In conclusion, “Night” stands as a timeless testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unspeakable darkness. Through his powerful storytelling and unwavering commitment to truth, Elie Wiesel invites readers to bear witness to the horrors of the Holocaust while also celebrating the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. It is a book that challenges us to confront the darkest aspects of human nature while also inspiring us to strive for a world guided by compassion, justice, and empathy. As we navigate the complexities of our own lives, “Night” serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the darkest of nights, there is always a glimmer of light waiting to be found.

US Surgeon General calls for warning labels on social media amid mental health 'emergency'

the dream house essay topics

The U.S. Surgeon General called for social media companies to be required to use safety warning labels in a New York Times opinion essay published Monday.

Citing research that shows social media could be negatively impacting youth mental health , Dr. Vivek H. Murthy said a surgeon general's warning on social media platforms, similar to those on tobacco and alcohol products, could raise awareness for parents about the potential harm of the platforms.

"One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it," Murthy wrote. "That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms."

NetChoice , a trade organization representing some social media companies, said in a statement shared with USA TODAY that the responsibility should be on the parents to protect their children's mental health, not the government or tech companies.

Research shows social media could come with benefit and harm

Murthy said social media is a major factor in the mental health crisis among young people, which he called "an emergency."

Social media has become nearly ubiquitous among youth. The  2023 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health  found that nearly  95% of youth aged 13 to 17 use a social media platform , with more than a third saying they use it "almost constantly."

The advisory concluded that more research is needed to fully understand the impacts of social media. But it showed there are some benefits and "ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents."

Potential benefits identified in the advisory were community, connection and self expression. It also stated that social media can support mental health of LGBTQ youth to help develop their identities. Additionally, seven out of 10 girls of color reported encountering identity-affirming content related to race on social media, the advisory stated.

Potential harms of using social media included greater risk of suffering from depression and anxiety. Some studies also showed greater risk of negative health outcomes for adolescents girls including disordered eating and poor sleep.

Murthy praises dairy recall, Boeing response as examples of swift action

In the NYT letter, Murthy pointed to the F.A.A.'s swift grounding of Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes after a door plug came off mid-flight earlier this year and widespread recalls of cheese products due to risk of listeria contamination .

"Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?," Murthy wrote. "These harms are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability."

Several state bills seeking to limit youth access to social media have been passed by legislatures but blocked in court. Those lawsuits were often brought by NetChoice.

NetChoice vice president and general counsel Carl Szabo said in a statement that the onus is on parents to protect their children from harm online.

"A warning label oversimplifies this issue, and it is a simplistic way to approach this that assumes that every child is the exact same. In reality, every child is different and struggles with their own challenges," Szabo said. "Parents and guardians are the most appropriately situated to handle these unique needs of their children—not the government or tech companies."
