This thesis explores topics in Agricultural Economics and is composed of five papers. In the first paper (Chapter 2), a latent-class stochastic frontier model is used to estimate efficiency scores of farmers in Ethiopia. Compared to conventional models, which assume a unique frontier, much lower inefficiencies are found, suggesting that part of the inefficiencies uncovered in the literature could be an artefact of the methods used. The second paper (Chapter 3) revisits the link between cereal diversity and productivity using a panel dataset in Ethiopia. The results suggest that the positive effect between cereal diversity and productivity becomes much smaller when households who produce teff (a low-productivity and high-value crop) are excluded from the sample, hinting at the possibility that results could be driven by yield differentials between cereals, rather than diversity. The third paper (Chapter 4) estimates the labour impacts of the adoption of Soil and Water Conservation technologies (SWC) in Ethiopia. The results suggest that adopting SWC technologies leads to an increase in adult and child labour. Understanding the labour impacts is important in itself, but it also raises concerns about using impact evaluation methods that require no change in inputs as an identifying assumption of impacts. Paper 4 (Chapter 5), assesses the pertinence of a drought index that has recently been proposed in the literature by Yu and Babcock (2010) and argues that it defines drought too narrowly. An extension to this index is proposed and we show, using a dataset of Indian districts, that the original index is likely to underestimate the impacts of drought. In Paper 5 (Chapter 6), we identify data-driven ranges of rainfall for which the marginal effects of a rainfall-temperature index (RTI) are different and then we discuss how the impacts of drought have changed over the 1966-2009 period in India. Finally, Chapter 7 concludes.

Writing a thesis is not an easy task. For most of the students, it can be even intimidating, especially when you do not know where to start your research.
Here, we have provided an economics thesis topics list. After all, everyone knows that choosing the right idea is crucial when writing an academic paper. In economics, it can combine history, math, social studies, politics, and numerous other subjects. You should also have solid foundations and a sound factual basis for a thesis. Without these elements, you won’t be able to master your research paper.
The issue is:
It is not always clear what could be seen as an excellent economics thesis topic. Our experts can assist you with this challenge. This list contains some outstanding examples to get you started.
📈 macroeconomics.
A good thesis in economics is a blend between an empirical paper and a theoretical one. One of the essential steps in choosing a topic in economics is to decide which one you will write.
You may write, research, analyze statistical data and other information. Or build and study a specific economic model.
Or why not both!
Here are some questions you can ask when deciding what topic to choose:
The best way to understand what type of research you have to do is to write a thesis proposal. You will most probably be required to submit it anyway. Your thesis supervisor will examine your ideas, methods, list of secondary and primary sources. At some universities, the proposal will be graded.
After you get the initial feedback, you will have a clear idea of what to adjust before writing your thesis. Only then, you’ll be able to start.
At the U.S. Universities, an undergraduate thesis is very uncommon. However, it depends on the Department Policy.
The biggest challenge with the Bachelor’s Thesis in economics concerns its originality. Even though you are not required to conduct entirely unique research, you have to lack redundant ideas.

We offer a Master of Science (M.S.) degree with thesis and non-thesis options, as well as an option for a minor. Both options are also available under the Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's (150 hour) degree programs. In addition, we cooperate with the Texas Tech University Law School to offer a joint Master of Science/Doctor of Jurisprudence (M.S./J.D.) degree.
The M.S. degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics provides training in economic theory and methods of analysis, with an emphasis on addressing applied economic problems. Students who select the thesis option are expected to demonstrate competency as economic analysts by completing a thesis, which is a work of original research. The non-thesis option requires more coursework than the thesis option. Considerable flexibility is incorporated into the non-thesis option so that the student can focus elective courses in an area of concentration of their choosing.
The Accelerated B.S./M.S. (150 hour) program allows qualified students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics in our department to work concurrently on their B.S. and M.S. Students in this program are able to take up to six hours of graduate coursework (two of four eligible courses) which can count for credit in both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The joint M.S.-J.D. degree provides students who want to practice law in an agricultural and/or natural resource setting with graduate training in economics. Those who select this option must be admitted to both the Law School and the departmental M.S. program.
A student entering the M.S. degree program must have completed an accepted bachelor's degree program or be an Agricultural and Applied Economics undergraduate who has been admitted into the Accelerated B.S./M.S. program. Undergraduate requirements that normally will have been completed, earning a grade of B or better, before beginning M.S. graduate coursework include the following courses or their equivalent.
A student who has not satisfactorily completed the above requirements may be required to do so prior to or during the first semester of the graduate program. This prerequisite coursework will not count toward the M.S. degree requirements.
The Master of Science program in Agricultural and Applied Economics consists of a minimum of 30 hours of graduate credit for the M.S. thesis option, and 36 hours of graduate credit for the M.S. non-thesis option. Requirements for Master's degrees through the Accelerated B.S./M.S. (150 hour) programs (thesis or non-thesis) are exactly the same as for students who enter the graduate program after completing an undergraduate degree. The only difference is integration of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in a way that can be considerably more time and cost efficient than when the degrees are pursued sequentially rather than contemporaneously.
Except for unusual situations, substitutions for core courses are not permitted. Requests for substitutions for core courses must be initiated by the student and submitted, with written justification, to the department Graduate Coordinator . Final decisions on substitutions for core courses taught outside our department are made by the department Graduate Coordinator. Decisions on core courses taught inside the department are made by the current instructor of the core course being replaced and must be approved by the student's advisory committee.
Information on the Thesis Proposal and Proposal Defense is provided in Section 8.0 of this Handbook.
M.S. non-thesis students are required to complete a professional paper demonstrating an understanding of economic concepts and analytical methods covered in their coursework. The development of this paper will be supervised by the student's advisory committee chair or another member of the student's advisory committee.
All students attempting a M.S. non-thesis degree are responsible to report and communicate with their advisor in a timely manner prior to their date of presentation or defense. Waiting until the last minute to submit paperwork is not professional or acceptable behavior. Additionally, non-thesis students must complete their professional presentation by the final date for defense of a thesis as published on the Texas Tech Website in the semester of intended graduation.
The Final Examination will be conducted by the student's advisory committee. This examination is an oral defense of the student's thesis or professional paper. The exam will begin with a public presentation of the student's research (thesis or professional paper). After the public presentation, and a question and answer period, the guests will be asked to leave the room and the student's committee will ask further questions, provide comments on the thesis or professional paper, and determine whether the student has successfully completed the examination.
Public announcement of exams will be done through the department Graduate Secretary. Exams must be announced at least two week prior to the exam date.

Choosing a topic.
Choosing a topic that can answer an economic research question is challenging. Some tips:

Librarians are here to help! Librarians can help to devise a feasible topic, assist with the literature search, and choose appropriate data. Your data may fall into multiple categories. Think of the primary aspect of your topic in terms of first contact. Do not email librarians individually. If unsure who to contact either put all that apply on same email or email just one. If that person is not the best, they will refer you.

Workshops listed twice have the same content and are done as an opportunity to fit your schedule. While you must attend at least one data workshop, it is wise to attend more than one. If in a certificate program, with the exception of political economy which has to be incorporated into your JIW, other programs have different requirements which are typically for your senior year. As an example, if in finance, if you choose not to explore a finance topic this year you will still need to incorporate in your senior theses so try and attend a finance workshop in addition to your topical workshop for your JIW since these are intended to help you for your time at Princeton and both the JIW but also the senior thesis.

Here is what our forestry alums have been up to.
My wife LouAn and I continue to live in our home in Bakersfield. Meanwhile, our family continues to grow. We’ll be adding to number of great grandkids - in November # 10 will arrive.
The years are going by much faster than they used to. Continue with hobbies around the house and remain active in our church. Life has been good to us both. Reminisce our 4 years at MSU – the best university one could ever attend. A Spartan forever.
I retired from University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources as Professor Emeritus of Hydrology in 1997. I am currently partially retired as chairman of an environmental consulting company, Nutter & Associates, Inc. I co-founded in 1984. Nutter & Associates has 28 employees.
After 43 years in Maine, Cheryl and I moved to Emmaus, PA in 2022 to be close to family. It is great living two miles from our granddaughter, but we do miss Maine. Love the huge tulip trees here and the availability of cherry lumber. I am fully retired having spent most of my career doing real estate transactions for electric utilities. My forestry degree and background was excellent for this line of work in a rural state like Maine.
After a 25 years with Plum Creek Timber and Weyerhaeuser as a GIS and data analyst, my wife and I split our time between Hollywood, FL and Las Matas de Farfán, Dominican Republic.
I work as the Living Collections Acquisitions Manager in the horticulture department of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri.
I plan and execute fieldwork collecting and conserving the world’s flora in Missouri and across the globe. My forestry education and my time at MSU provided a basis for my interest in global plant communities and I will always cherish my time wandering Baker Woodlot with my fellow students and friends.
I have an awesome young toddler and it’s been incredible to share an interest in the natural world with him.
I earned my Ph.D. in Forest Economics in 2004 under the supervision of Dr. Runsheng Yin. Following my graduation, I worked as a research assistant professor at North Dakota State University from 2004 to 2009. In 2009, I began my career as an assistant professor of economics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where I currently hold the position of Harold T. Caven Professor of Economics.
My Ph.D. dissertation focused on international trade, and I have continued to research this area while also exploring new topics in energy economics and applied econometrics. I am deeply grateful for the knowledge and experiences I gained at MSU and hope to visit in the near future.
After MSU, I began my career with the Michigan DNR as a forester and moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Currently I live and work out of Sault Ste. Marie MI, managing state forests within the Sault Ste. Marie Management Unit and managing USFS land via the Good Neighbor Authority on the East Zone of the Hiawatha NF.
My typical day is a balance of office work and field work. Field work is mostly setting up timber for sale and administering timber sale contracts and office work is the computer side of timber sale prep and contract write up.
The coolest thing I’ve seen on the job so far was a fisher that ran in front of me while I was cruising in a mixed conifer stand near Trout Lake, MI.
