Three Tips for Using Gifs in the English Classroom

gifs-for-students

May 11, 2020 //  by  Lindsay Ann //   2 Comments

Sharing is caring!

If you’re a teacher who loves technology (or teach students who love technology), you won’t want to miss this post about using gifs for students to model, remind, and to build a positive classroom culture in your distance learning or tech-infused classroom.

What is a Gif?

Let’s start with the basics. What is a gif?

A gif is basically a short video set to loop overandoverandoverandoverandover.

Like this one:

Or this one:

You may have noticed I use these in my blog posts. There’s something about a gif that grabs one’s attention.

If you’re like me, you find funny bits of movies and television shows that have already been made into gifs to insert in emails, in your teaching agenda slides, in assignment sheets, as choice options for a multiple choice SEL check-in. Ya know, the basics.

If you’re also like me, you had never considered other possibilities for gif goodness.

But let me tell you…these three tips to use gifs for students’ learning will change. your. life.

Using Screencastify to Create Gifs for Students

I’ve used Screencastify for some time in my high school English classroom, usually to create flipped classroom teaching videos or for student projects.

When I went to save my screencast one day, I noticed the option to save as a gif!

Curious, I tried it.

And today I want to share this screen recorder to gif process with YOU! Gifs are more than quick entertainment. They’re a powerful visual tool that teachers can use to enhance their students’ understanding, to motivate students, or to help students demonstrate their learning.

First: Decide what your purpose is for creating a gif. Are you going to quickly model a concept? Create a reminder or answer to an often-asked question? Do you want to give step-by-step instructions? Are you hoping to spark a discussion? To create an empowering or motivational message?

Second: Make sure that you have the Screencastify Chrome extension installed. Open up any documents you wish you use.

gifs-for-students

Third: Click to open Screencastify. Make sure that your microphone is turned off. Set it to record actions that happen within your browser tab.

Fourth: Record your gif sequence.

Fifth: Click “stop” when you are finished. Trim your video if needed. Then, click on the download button and choose export as animated gif.

Sixth: Download your gif. Share it with students!

  • In an email
  • In the stream on Google Classroom
  • On a daily/weekly agenda
  • On a digital assignment sheet
  • As feedback for students in a Google Doc
  • In a Google Form, on Padlet, etc.

Using Giphy to Create Gifs for Students

Another way to create gifs for teaching is to compile several images together into a slideshow using Giphy . This is a great way to create a simple motivational message for students or compile several screenshots together into a gif.

To level up your game, try using a Canva template to create a series of same-sized images to upload to Giphy. I like this option for creating a motivational gif because I can customize the text and visuals together.

Have Students Create Gifs

In this third option, your students become the gifmasters.

Have students create gifs using Screencastify or Giphy and share them with their classmates.

Here are some possibilities:

  • Teach a concept
  • Create vocabulary visuals
  • Share a story or poem
  • Represent a character or theme from a novel
  • Symbolize an idea
  • Respond to an exit ticket

I hope that this post has been helpful and that you are now thinking of ALL the ways that you can create your own gifs and share them with students. Or, maybe you are thinking of ways your students can create gifs to share with you and/or their classmates.

Either way, this is a fun way to harness the power of a gif for learning.

Hey, if you loved this post, I want to be sure you’ve had the chance to grab a  FREE copy of my guide to streamlined grading . I know how hard it is to do all the things as an English teacher, so I’m over the moon to be able to share with you some of my best strategies for reducing the grading overwhelm.

Assignment Submission GIF Generator

Creates a file that shows a gif (or other image) for a few seconds before redirecting to your assignment also supports offline assignments.

Use this when submitting assignments by email, or by a school or uni's student-website (eg. the ASMS Portal, Daymap, SEQTA, or Flinders Learning Online).

Make sure that there isn't any restriction on what sort of file can be submitted – eg. if only PDF files are allowed then this won't work, as this generates an HTML file (i.e. a simple webpage).

Submitting offline files using this program might be unreliable, as if the teacher has disabled certain browser features they won't be able to download it. Online files are pretty much guaranteed to work though.

Disclaimer: You should ensure that it works and that the teacher has new enough tech – I take no responsibility if it doesn't work or your teacher hates you afterwards.

Grow, reflect, share, using gifs for learning, teach vocab with gifs.

Last semester, a super tech-savvy teacher at my school, Nicole Donaldson ( @mrsdonaldson5th ) told me about a hashtag she had recently come across and fallen in love with: #GIFvocab. I started following the hashtag and saw what she meant! Check out a few of my favorite tweets to the hashtag #GIFvocab:

#GIF Vocab – Curated tweets by meredithakers

Sam Carpenter, @CarpenterCougar , started the hashtag in February of 2016 and gave this explanation after his first entry under the hashtag:

I just set up #GIFvocab w my class. 1. Pick relevant vocab word 2. I find GIF & definition 3. Students tweet GIF & definition in own words — Sam Carpenter (@CarpenterCougar) February 22, 2016

Since then, many other teachers have jumped on board with their students to add to the #GIFvocab dictionary.

Implementing #GIFvocab in your classroom:

You could use Sam’s original instructions:

  • Pick a vocab word
  • Define the word (with reference to the GIF)
  • Teach it to your class
  • Have a student tweet the GIF and definition in their own words

Another idea would be to flip this model – choose a GIF of the week and have students come up with vocab words and definitions that go with the GIF. This could even be assigned as homework and you could send the GIF out to students and/or parents via email or remind. Have students simply bring in ideas throughout the week and the winning idea (or two or three) get to tweet out the GIF.

Another idea for implementation would be to set up a class padlet with a GIF as the prompt. Here, students could each post a word that they think describes the GIF with a definition and description that goes with the picture.

This Week's Vocab Prompt:.clipular

Click here to see this example padlet and even add your own word to the wall!

I could see this version working well in a blended learning classroom or as a way to keep students accountable.

Engage and Motivate

A super creative 1st grade teacher at my school, Ali Briggum @msbriggum utilizes a GIF each morning to welcome students and motivate them for the day ahead. Students from all over the building change their paths to walk by her room to see her GIF of the day!

Example: Post this GIF with the challenge – How can you show kindness to someone today?

Inspire, motivate, and make kids laugh using GIFs! 🙂 Love this!

Engage with Content

There are so many amazing GIFs out there to support content! Here a couple of websites that have great educational GIFs:

https://www.boredpanda.com/amazing-educational-gifs/

https://www.ngssphenomena.com/

OR do a google search for the topic you’re looking for with the word GIF and look through the images. NOTE: you have to click on the image and wait a beat or two to see the GIF in motion. To use GIFs in Google Slides or Docs, always remember to “Copy image address” then Insert, Image, by URL, paste in order to get the moving image rather than a still picture.

Using a GIF related to your content can really hook students in and help them understand by seeing the visual representation on repeat.

Have Students Make GIFs using the Webcam

Make short webcam GIFs really quickly and easily with andtheniwaslike.co

THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE THING!!! I have made WAAAaaay too many GIFs while working on this post. Go play. You will have so much fun. So will your students! Here are some ideas for use in the classroom:

  • Challenge students to create a GIF to express the emotions of a character
  • Demonstrate a science concept with manipulatives (example: use objects and a flashlight to show eclipses)
  • Turn your chromebook around, tilt the screen down, and show your work solving a math problem
  • Answer a high-level thinking question and use the GIF to show where you found text evidence to support your thinking

Students could turn in these newly created GIFs directly to the teacher via email or google classroom, but I like the idea of putting them into padlet or a collaborative slides doc even better so that students can explain their GIF and their thinking as well as see and respond to each other’s work.

How to use it in class tomorrow:

  • Go to andthenIwaslike.co
  • Record an awesome GIF
  • Click on the finished GIF (this step is important)
  • Two finger click or right click on the GIF and choose “Copy image address” (using the link under the GIF won’t work for Slides, but WILL work for padlet)
  • Go to a Google Doc or Slides presentation
  • Choose Insert, Image, by URL and paste
  • Boom! Your created GIF is in your Doc!

See below for a template you can tweak and use with instructions for students on a collaborative slides presentation.  You’ll notice that there are MANY copies of the template slide. This is so each student gets one slide to work on.

Click here to add a copy of this template to your Google Drive.

Once you’ve edited the template to your liking, click on the blue share button and ensure that anyone with the link can EDIT – this way ALL students will work on the SAME slides presentation at the SAME TIME. Copy the link and share it with students (use google classroom, email, or a url shortener to make this easy).

How do you use GIFs for education? What would you add to the list? Please leave a comment below!

I think there are a lot of ways make learning effective but the most effective way is to make it fun. Learner will sometimes find the topic too boring that their brain might never grasp it or it will just be forgotten right away. So to make the learning stick to the mind of the learner is to make it fun and memorable. Appealing to the emotion makes it memorable. If the teacher could find a way to make this strategy works, then the learner will really learn a lot.

A Step-by-Step Guide to GIF Animations

school assignment gif

GIFs are the new meme. They’ve become such a prominent part of our pop culture that the latest update of Apple’s iOS included a GIF keyboard! I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve even had an entire text conversation only using GIFs. Teachers love them, students love them, so why not make them? Students are very interested in the world of animation and creating GIFs is a simple way to explore it.

Check out this step-by-step guide to begin creating GIF animations using Photoshop.

1. history of the gif.

Before tackling GIF animation it’s best to give your students a brief history lesson. Photographer Eadweard Muybridge, known as the “ Grandfather of the Motion Picture ,” first captured motion through photography in the 1870s. However, the first GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) wouldn’t be created until 1987. The GIF is a compressed file that was ideal for sharing across slow modem connections in the 1990s. In 1997 the “ Dancing Baby ” would go viral and the rest is history. For a more detailed look at the history of the GIF,  share this presentation with your students.

2. Upload or Create Images in Photoshop

Before jumping into animation, your students will need to have a solid understanding of Photoshop. These beginning projects would be a great way to get students started.

To start, students can simply upload images or draw directly in Photoshop. From here, they will use their editing skills and tools to manipulate their image however they wish. It will be important to work in layers as they create. Encourage students to spend quality time on this step, because this is the step that will take the most time.

To follow along, download this PSD file . This is also a great way for students to learn the process.

3. Open the Animation Window

1

Once you have completed editing the static image or drawing, the animation process begins. Depending on the version of Photoshop you are working in, this will be a little different. In the toolbar, select Window>Animation or Window>Timeline. From here, make sure your window is in frame animation mode. This should look similar to the image below.

2

4. Create Animation with Layer Visibility

In this step, students will need to understand layer visibility. Layer visibility is simply clicking the eye icon to the left of the layer to hide or show it. This process is best explained by comparing it to stop motion. Virtually, we are putting a series of still images together to create a moving image. Using layer visibility will allow for gradual changes to be made in the animation.

3

Each time a new movement is desired the frame will need to be duplicated. In the kite example, the kite can be moved around in each duplicated frame to give the illusion it is flying.

5. Adjust Timing

Before finishing the animation, adjust the time under each frame. Depending on the desired speed of the animation, time can be adjusted easily.

4

If you want your GIF to play through continuously without stopping, make sure to select the forever option.

5

6. Preview GIF

7. saving the gif.

Saving a GIF in Photoshop is different than saving other files. Make sure you are saving the file “For Web and Devices.” In newer versions of Photoshop, you will have to Export > Save for Web.

6

A new window will appear to finalize saving options. In the presets, I’d recommend saving it as “GIF 128 Dithered.” This will optimize more complicated and colorful graphics. After you have saved the GIF you can view it by dragging the file into an internet browser. Students can also send the image to themselves to view it on their phone!

7

Creating GIFs Without Photoshop

  • Here are directions for creating GIFs using GIMP.
  • Free editing sites like Pixlr or GIMP can be used to manipulate images. To convert images into a GIF, visit this website .

Creating GIFs will be an engaging process for your students. But be warned–once you show them how to do it, they will want to animate everything!

Georgia school shooting live updates: Two students, two teachers killed at Apalachee High School, 14-year-old in custody

What we know so far.

  • The 14-year-old student accused of killing four people at Apalachee High School was investigated last year for threatening to carry out a school shooting, federal authorities said. The teen allegedly made the threats online and included photos of guns, according to officials.
  • Four people, two teachers and two students, were killed and nine were injured after the shooting today in Winder, Georgia.
  • The teenage suspect, Colt Gray, surrendered immediately and will be charged as an adult, law enforcement officials said.
  • Officials have not identified the victims. The school's golf coach was wounded in the shooting, his daughter posted on social media.

All injured victims expected to survive

Everyone injured and at hospitals after today’s high school shooting is expected to survive, Barrow County Sheriff Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said.

“All of our victims that are at the hospital are going to make it and going to recover well, as we’ve been told, and we don’t expect any more fatalities at this time," Smith said at a news conference tonight.

Shooter used AR-style weapon

The 14-year-old suspect in today’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School used an “AR platform-style weapon,” the director of the GBI said.

The exact model of gun was not specified at tonight's news conference.

GBI Director Chris Hosey said that the investigation is still very fluid and active.

Following the shooting at a Georgia high school that killed four people and injured at least nine, the Winder community came together for a vigil. NBC News’ Jesse Kirsch spoke with a 15-year-old student who recalled the moment she heard gun shots.

Counselor shaped by a school shooting decades ago heads to Winder to try to provide comfort

WINDER, Ga. — In 1997 in Pearl, Mississippi, Lisa Sanders was a law enforcement official on the scene after a 16-year-old shot and killed two classmates after beating his mother to death.

Sanders said she was shaken by the scene and eventually transitioned into education. Since then, she said she has shown up at the scene of two other school shootings because, “I just feel like I should be there.”

She moved to metro Atlanta two years ago, and when she learned of the latest tragedy, she headed to Winder.

“I don’t know anybody here,” said Sanders, a counselor in the Gwinnett County School System. “I never thought that in 1997, before Columbine, this would be such an epidemic. I thought we’d have a handle on it. But it’s out of hand."

"To have this continually happening is so tragic," she said. "All these years later, I feel like I have to be here. I’m so saddened by it. But being here makes me feel connected to the people who need comforting.”

Suspected gunman was investigated in 2023 over school threats, FBI says

John Filippelli

The 14-year-old suspect in the deadly Apalachee High School shooting was investigated last year over online threats about a school shooting, federal officials said.

“In May 2023, the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time," the FBI and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said in a joint statement. The online threats contained photos of guns, they said.

“Within 24 hours, the FBI determined the online post originated in Georgia, and the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office referred the information to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for action.”

The sheriff's office identified a possible subject, a 13-year-old male, and interviewed him and his father, officials said. The FBI confirmed that the 13-year-old is the same person in custody related to today’s shootings.

"The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them. The subject denied making the threats online. Jackson County alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject," the agencies said in a statement tonight.

“At that time, there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state, or federal levels.”

Most of the injured are students

Eight of the nine people who were injured and taken to hospitals after today’s high school shooting were students, authorities said.

One of the injured in the incident at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is a teacher, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said .

Two Apalachee High School students and two high school teachers were killed. A 14-year-old suspect was arrested.

Winder community turns to one another for support

WINDER, Ga. — A 30-minute vigil ended tonight with community members praying and lighting candles for the victims of this morning's deadly school shooting.

Many cried and hugged each other. A few let balloons float into the air.

Apalachee High School shooting vigil balloons

While holding three balloons, Matt White, 61, said he had moved to Winder from Athens, Georgia, three years ago for peace.

“It was impossible for me not to come here and be among my community. You never expect something like this," he said. "You see it other places. But now, we have to figure out how to heal. And it has to be together. It can’t be as individuals.”

'When one of us hurts, we all hurt,' leader tells grieving community

WINDER, Ga. — As the sun began to settle behind thick clouds at Jug Tavern Park, Winder City Council Member Power Evans struggled to find the right words.

Hundreds of teary-eyed locals reeling from today's tragedy at Apalachee High School gathered tonight for a vigil to help process the shooting and mourn the four victims.

“Whether you have a student, whether you’re the mother or father of a student, brother or sister, whether you’re a teacher, an Apalachee teacher, this all affects us,” he said, finally.

“We may be a county of 90,000 people, but we’re still a small community, and when one of us hurts, we all hurt.”

Drawn to Apalachee High to offer support

WINDER, Ga. —  Though she's not a student at Apalachee High, Gretchen Gierlach, an 18-year-old student at Georgia Gwinnett College, felt compelled to come to campus this evening.

student signs message school shooting aftermath

“I didn’t come here for answers. I simply see an issue," she said. "I’m here for the family who are suffering from this tragedy. I’m here to support them through this awful, awful, awful tragedy."

Two students and two teachers died in today's shooting.

"I keep hearing the same thing on the news: How this keeps happening. This is, unfortunately, just another statistic," Gierlach said. "These kids are desensitized to this entire situation."

85% of Gen Z voters worried about gun violence, survey finds

Scott Bland Senior Politics Editor

Eighty-five percent of registered voters younger than 30 said they were at least somewhat concerned about “the possibility of gun violence in school or public spaces,” according to  a new NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z Poll powered by SurveyMonkey .

That includes 59% who said they were “very concerned.”

Apalachee High is 2nd school shooting involving active shooter this year

Today’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is the second school shooting involving an active shooter in 2024, according to a count of school shootings by NBC News.

The other school shooting this year occurred on Jan. 4, when a 17-year-old student at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, fatally shot a sixth-grader, wounded four others, and then killed himself.

The school shooting tracker is a project by NBC News designed to add consistency to statistics used by news agencies and other organizations, as well as to identify and contextualize shootings in all types of schools from kindergarten to college, across the U.S.

The shooting at Apalachee High School occurred a little over a month after the first day of school for the 2024-'25 school year, which was Aug. 1, according to its online calendar .

The scene outside the school hours after shooting

WINDER, Ga. — Hours after the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School, a heavy police presence remains in the area.

At 6 p.m., a helicopter circled the campus from above. The street and perimeter of the school are lined with media.

While the scene at the school was bustling, the neighborhood of single-family homes across the street is quiet. Not one person could be seen lingering outside.

Winder planning vigil for community to grieve together

The city of Winder will hold a vigil at 7 tonight after today’s deadly shooting at a high school.

The vigil will be at Jug Tavern Park in the city of around 18,300.

The city said in an announcement on Facebook that the event will be “for a time to be together and grieve for the horrific events that unfolded in Barrow County today.”

‘Hate will not prevail,’ sheriff says after shooting

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith pledged that “hate will not prevail” after today’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School.

“This is home for me. I was born and raised here. I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I’m proud of this school system,” Smith said. “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for this community.”

“But I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. I want that to be very clear and known,” he said. “Love will prevail over what happened today.”

A motive in the shooting is unclear, and Smith said he did not know why the shooter opened fire. Smith described the shooting as “pure evil.”

Officials don't yet know if gunman targeted the victims

Investigators could not immediately determine whether the 14-year-old shooting suspect targeted the victims at Apalachee High School or it was a random attack.

"We don't know of any targets at this point," Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters. "We have not identified that at this point."

Smith also said there were no clear connections between the suspect and the victims.

Four people were killed and nine injured in the shooting.

Suspect, 14, gave up immediately when confronted

A campus police officer quickly confronted a 14-year-old gunman, who is a student at the school, and got him to surrender immediately, officials said,

"Our school resource officer engaged him and the shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, that it would end with an OIS — an officer involved shooting," Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters.

"He gave up, got on the ground and the deputy took him into custody."

Students full of terror and tears

A student who witnessed the deadly school shooting in Georgia described the “scary” scene and said many kids were crying.

'It doesn't have to be this way,' VP Harris says

Vice President Kamala Harris lamented the "senseless" Georgia school shooting that claimed at least four lives — because "it doesn't have to be this way."

She started a New Hampshire campaign stop by thanking first responders who rushed to Apalachee High School and limited the bloodshed.

"This is just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies, and it's just outrageous that every day in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive," Harris told supporters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

"We have to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. You know, it doesn't have to be this way. It doesn't have to be this way."

An Apalachee High School student describes the panic she felt when shots rang out from the classroom next to hers and the moments that followed as she sheltered in place with other students.

Suspected shooter is a teen, law enforcement officials say

The suspected shooter in today's deadly violence is a teenager, multiple senior law enforcement officials told NBC News.

Police are working to determine the teen's name and whether they had a prior affiliation with the school, the officials said.

White House calls for tougher gun laws

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned the deadly shooting in Georgia and joined the president in calling on Congress to take action and pass either an assault weapons ban or universal background checks.

Biden: 'Ending this gun violence epidemic is personal to me'

Caroline Kenny

President Joe Biden thanked first responders for catching the suspected Apalachee High School gunman and called for an end to this “gun violence epidemic."

"We are closely coordinating with officials at the federal, state and local level, and are grateful for the first responders who brought the suspect into custody and prevented further loss of life," Biden said in a statement. “Ending this gun violence epidemic is personal to me.”

The president challenged Republicans to work with Democrats on gun safety legislation.

"After decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ‘enough is enough’ and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation," the president added. "We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers.”

4 killed, 9 wounded in the shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that four people are dead and nine injured after the shooting at the Apalachee High School today.

They added the suspect is alive and in custody.

Elizabeth Maline

Miguel Eduardo Perichi Orta, a sophomore, recounted the moments surrounding the shooting. He told WXIA reporters that he heard banging following a loud boom.

"I was shaking, scared," Miguel said. "I couldn't communicate with my phone for half an hour, and I didn't know what was going to happen."

Once the police let students out of the classrooms, Miguel described seeing gunpowder and blood on the ground.

"I saw like a huge puddle of blood in the classroom, and that really, it like dropped my stomach," he said. "It was heartbreaking to see that."

Miguel said he was "upset and disappointed" over the deadly violence.

"If something like this can happen here, when you think it's a normal day, it can happen anywhere, and that's what really hurts," he said.

14-year-old girl on shooting: 'I didn't want to die that way'

Camille Nelms said she was crying when a gunman fire on her classroom.

As bullets came flying into the room, the teacher and students tried to take shelter in the corner, the teen said.

Apalachee parent describes harrowing details from daughter's friend

Jackie Moore, the mother of an Apalachee freshman, spoke with NBC News about what her daughter knew about the moments leading up to the shooting.

One of her daughter’s friends, who was in a classroom two doors down from where the shooting occurred, said she heard someone banging on a door and shouting, “Open the f---ing door, let us in” before gunshots rang out. He said he then witnessed gunpowder, gun shells and blood everywhere.

Fortunately, Moore was able to find her daughter after rushing to the school.

"I literally stopped everything and took off just to be here," Moore said, her voice trembling. "My heart was just breaking because my daughter wasn’t responding to her texts or phone calls. It was terrifying."

Moore is now waiting to reunite with her son, who attends a nearby middle school.

"I'm sure he's devastated," the neighbor said. "He probably doesn't want to finish the rest of the year. His last year, and this is what happens."

The neighbor said that the student heard the shooting and called his mom.

"He's like, 'They're shooting, they're shooting right across from my classroom,'" the neighbor said. "He called his mom devastated, I'm sure."

Georgia law enforcement officials say a suspect is in custody after a shooting that resulted in multiple casualties after a shooting at Apalachee High School.

Students to be released from surrounding schools as investigation continues

Sheriff Jud Smith said that schools surrounding Apalachee High School, which were placed on a soft lockdown after reports of the shooting, would release their students soon as families anxiously await reunions with their students.

Smith called the investigation "very active and ever-developing," as officials of numerous sheriff’s offices from across the state of Georgia could be seen on Apalachee’s campus.

Police step up patrols near Atlanta public schools

The deadly school shooting, about 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, has prompted officials to step up patrols around campuses in Georgia's biggest city.

"I have been in contact with APD chief, and APD has been working with Atlanta Public Schools Police Department to bolster patrols around our schools for the rest of the day out of an abundance of caution," Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement .

"APD has also been on standby in case other law enforcement agencies need assistance with this incident. May God comfort the victims and their loved ones in the difficult days ahead."

Sheriff describes 'chaotic' scene following deadly school shooting

Reuniting students with their parents is the immediate top priority of law enforcement in the wake of this deadly shooting, officials said.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed that one suspect as in custody.

"We're in the process of reunifying our students with their parents," Smith told reporters. "Obviously, that's chaotic, but we want to be respectful of them and their privacy as well."

Smith did not reveal any additional details about the shooting at Apalachee High School but said he hopes to give more information at a 4 p.m. news conference.

Assignment 6

Many questions on the assignments in this course are out of 4 points. When you receive your feedback on these assignments, these scores translate as follows:

  • 4 is reserved for exceptional answers that demonstrate a full understanding of the material in a manner that exceeds the course’s expectations, which may sometimes involve external research. Please note that this does not necessarily mean a long answer; indeed, an overly long answer that introduces irrelevant information is not likely to receive a 4. Rather, a 4 is awarded to a thorough and well thought-out and prepared answer that focuses on the subject of the question being presented. Only a few 4s at most will be awarded per question . A score of 4 should be interpreted as having received, in a manner of speaking, a “bonus point.”
  • 3 is awarded for a strong answer that demonstrates understanding of the material in a manner consistent with the course’s expectations. A score of 3 should be considered your benchmark for success . and should not , per the above, be interpreted as having “lost a point.”
  • 2 is awarded for a good answer that suggests likely understanding of the material, but is lacking in a minor way that does not fully demonstrate that understanding.
  • 1 is awarded for a poor to fair answer that either demonstrates partial understanding of the material or otherwise contains an error that suggests a misunderstanding of a key detail.
  • 0 is given to answers that are incorrect, exceedingly brief, or blank.

Grades in this course should not be converted to percentages and assumed to be accurate, because they will not be. A 3 out of 4 on a question, as indicated above, is a “benchmark for success,” and not a 75% (C). The course does not have pre-determined cutoffs for final grades. Beyond what is stated here, the course does not provide further detail about grade conversions.

The University of Chicago The Law School

Innovation clinic—significant achievements for 2023-24.

The Innovation Clinic continued its track record of success during the 2023-2024 school year, facing unprecedented demand for our pro bono services as our reputation for providing high caliber transactional and regulatory representation spread. The overwhelming number of assistance requests we received from the University of Chicago, City of Chicago, and even national startup and venture capital communities enabled our students to cherry-pick the most interesting, pedagogically valuable assignments offered to them. Our focus on serving startups, rather than all small- to medium-sized businesses, and our specialization in the needs and considerations that these companies have, which differ substantially from the needs of more traditional small businesses, has proven to be a strong differentiator for the program both in terms of business development and prospective and current student interest, as has our further focus on tackling idiosyncratic, complex regulatory challenges for first-of-their kind startups. We are also beginning to enjoy more long-term relationships with clients who repeatedly engage us for multiple projects over the course of a year or more as their legal needs develop.

This year’s twelve students completed over twenty projects and represented clients in a very broad range of industries: mental health and wellbeing, content creation, medical education, biotech and drug discovery, chemistry, food and beverage, art, personal finance, renewable energy, fintech, consumer products and services, artificial intelligence (“AI”), and others. The matters that the students handled gave them an unparalleled view into the emerging companies and venture capital space, at a level of complexity and agency that most junior lawyers will not experience until several years into their careers.

Representative Engagements

While the Innovation Clinic’s engagements are highly confidential and cannot be described in detail, a high-level description of a representative sample of projects undertaken by the Innovation Clinic this year includes:

Transactional/Commercial Work

  • A previous client developing a symptom-tracking wellness app for chronic disease sufferers engaged the Innovation Clinic again, this time to restructure its cap table by moving one founder’s interest in the company to a foreign holding company and subjecting the holding company to appropriate protections in favor of the startup.
  • Another client with whom the Innovation Clinic had already worked several times engaged us for several new projects, including (1) restructuring their cap table and issuing equity to an additional, new founder, (2) drafting several different forms of license agreements that the company could use when generating content for the platform, covering situations in which the company would license existing content from other providers, jointly develop new content together with contractors or specialists that would then be jointly owned by all creators, or commission contractors to make content solely owned by the company, (3) drafting simple agreements for future equity (“Safes”) for the company to use in its seed stage fundraising round, and (4) drafting terms of service and a privacy policy for the platform.
  • Yet another repeat client, an internet platform that supports independent artists by creating short films featuring the artists to promote their work and facilitates sales of the artists’ art through its platform, retained us this year to draft a form of independent contractor agreement that could be used when the company hires artists to be featured in content that the company’s Fortune 500 brand partners commission from the company, and to create capsule art collections that could be sold by these Fortune 500 brand partners in conjunction with the content promotion.
  • We worked with a platform using AI to accelerate the Investigational New Drug (IND) approval and application process to draft a form of license agreement for use with its customers and an NDA for prospective investors.
  • A novel personal finance platform for young, high-earning individuals engaged the Innovation Clinic to form an entity for the platform, including helping the founders to negotiate a deal among them with respect to roles and equity, terms that the equity would be subject to, and other post-incorporation matters, as well as to draft terms of service and a privacy policy for the platform.
  • Students also formed an entity for a biotech therapeutics company founded by University of Chicago faculty members and an AI-powered legal billing management platform founded by University of Chicago students.
  • A founder the Innovation Clinic had represented in connection with one venture engaged us on behalf of his other venture team to draft an equity incentive plan for the company as well as other required implementing documentation. His venture with which we previously worked also engaged us this year to draft Safes to be used with over twenty investors in a seed financing round.

More information regarding other types of transactional projects that we typically take on can be found here .

Regulatory Research and Advice

  • A team of Innovation Clinic students invested a substantial portion of our regulatory time this year performing highly detailed and complicated research into public utilities laws of several states to advise a groundbreaking renewable energy technology company as to how its product might be regulated in these states and its clearest path to market. This project involved a review of not only the relevant state statutes but also an analysis of the interplay between state and federal statutes as it relates to public utilities law, the administrative codes of the relevant state executive branch agencies, and binding and non-binding administrative orders, decisions and guidance from such agencies in other contexts that could shed light on how such states would regulate this never-before-seen product that their laws clearly never contemplated could exist. The highly varied approach to utilities regulation in all states examined led to a nuanced set of analysis and recommendations for the client.
  • In another significant research project, a separate team of Innovation Clinic students undertook a comprehensive review of all settlement orders and court decisions related to actions brought by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for violations of the prohibition on unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts and practices under the Consumer Financial Protection Act, as well as selected relevant settlement orders, court decisions, and other formal and informal guidance documents related to actions brought by the Federal Trade Commission for violations of the prohibition on unfair or deceptive acts or practices under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, to assemble a playbook for a fintech company regarding compliance. This playbook, which distilled very complicated, voluminous legal decisions and concepts into a series of bullet points with clear, easy-to-follow rules and best practices, designed to be distributed to non-lawyers in many different facets of this business, covered all aspects of operations that could subject a company like this one to liability under the laws examined, including with respect to asset purchase transactions, marketing and consumer onboarding, usage of certain terms of art in advertising, disclosure requirements, fee structures, communications with customers, legal documentation requirements, customer service and support, debt collection practices, arrangements with third parties who act on the company’s behalf, and more.

Miscellaneous

  • Last year’s students built upon the Innovation Clinic’s progress in shaping the rules promulgated by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”) pursuant to the Corporate Transparency Act to create a client alert summarizing the final rule, its impact on startups, and what startups need to know in order to comply. When FinCEN issued additional guidance with respect to that final rule and changed portions of the final rule including timelines for compliance, this year’s students updated the alert, then distributed it to current and former clients to notify them of the need to comply. The final bulletin is available here .
  • In furtherance of that work, additional Innovation Clinic students this year analyzed the impact of the final rule not just on the Innovation Clinic’s clients but also its impact on the Innovation Clinic, and how the Innovation Clinic should change its practices to ensure compliance and minimize risk to the Innovation Clinic. This also involved putting together a comprehensive filing guide for companies that are ready to file their certificates of incorporation to show them procedurally how to do so and explain the choices they must make during the filing process, so that the Innovation Clinic would not be involved in directing or controlling the filings and thus would not be considered a “company applicant” on any client’s Corporate Transparency Act filings with FinCEN.
  • The Innovation Clinic also began producing thought leadership pieces regarding AI, leveraging our distinct and uniquely University of Chicago expertise in structuring early-stage companies and analyzing complex regulatory issues with a law and economics lens to add our voice to those speaking on this important topic. One student wrote about whether non-profits are really the most desirable form of entity for mitigating risks associated with AI development, and another team of students prepared an analysis of the EU’s AI Act, comparing it to the Executive Order on AI from President Biden, and recommended a path forward for an AI regulatory environment in the United States. Both pieces can be found here , with more to come!

Innovation Trek

Thanks to another generous gift from Douglas Clark, ’89, and managing partner of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati, we were able to operationalize the second Innovation Trek over Spring Break 2024. The Innovation Trek provides University of Chicago Law School students with a rare opportunity to explore the innovation and venture capital ecosystem in its epicenter, Silicon Valley. The program enables participating students to learn from business and legal experts in a variety of different industries and roles within the ecosystem to see how the law and economics principles that students learn about in the classroom play out in the real world, and facilitates meaningful connections between alumni, students, and other speakers who are leaders in their fields. This year, we took twenty-three students (as opposed to twelve during the first Trek) and expanded the offering to include not just Innovation Clinic students but also interested students from our JD/MBA Program and Doctoroff Business Leadership Program. We also enjoyed four jam-packed days in Silicon Valley, expanding the trip from the two and a half days that we spent in the Bay Area during our 2022 Trek.

The substantive sessions of the Trek were varied and impactful, and enabled in no small part thanks to substantial contributions from numerous alumni of the Law School. Students were fortunate to visit Coinbase’s Mountain View headquarters to learn from legal leaders at the company on all things Coinbase, crypto, and in-house, Plug & Play Tech Center’s Sunnyvale location to learn more about its investment thesis and accelerator programming, and Google’s Moonshot Factory, X, where we heard from lawyers at a number of different Alphabet companies about their lives as in-house counsel and the varied roles that in-house lawyers can have. We were also hosted by Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati and Fenwick & West LLP where we held sessions featuring lawyers from those firms, alumni from within and outside of those firms, and non-lawyer industry experts on topics such as artificial intelligence, climate tech and renewables, intellectual property, biotech, investing in Silicon Valley, and growth stage companies, and general advice on career trajectories and strategies. We further held a young alumni roundtable, where our students got to speak with alumni who graduated in the past five years for intimate, candid discussions about life as junior associates. In total, our students heard from more than forty speakers, including over twenty University of Chicago alumni from various divisions.

The Trek didn’t stop with education, though. Throughout the week students also had the opportunity to network with speakers to learn more from them outside the confines of panel presentations and to grow their networks. We had a networking dinner with Kirkland & Ellis, a closing dinner with all Trek participants, and for the first time hosted an event for admitted students, Trek participants, and alumni to come together to share experiences and recruit the next generation of Law School students. Several speakers and students stayed in touch following the Trek, and this resulted not just in meaningful relationships but also in employment for some students who attended.

More information on the purposes of the Trek is available here , the full itinerary is available here , and one student participant’s story describing her reflections on and descriptions of her experience on the Trek is available here .

The Innovation Clinic is grateful to all of its clients for continuing to provide its students with challenging, high-quality legal work, and to the many alumni who engage with us for providing an irreplaceable client pipeline and for sharing their time and energy with our students. Our clients are breaking the mold and bringing innovations to market that will improve the lives of people around the world in numerous ways. We are glad to aid in their success in any way that we can. We look forward to another productive year in 2024-2025!

Schools identified as “large schools” for the 2024-2025 school year that will have priority for Open Enrollment into non-impacted schools*:

Please note that priority does not guarantee enrollment. Students will be added to the existing waitlist in the order in which the submissions are received.

Open Enrollment Waitlist Informaton

CLICK HERE for access to the waitlist. ( waitlist.cusdk8.org )

Parents checking living waitlist numbers will need to know their child’s six-digit perm identification number as well as the child’s six-digit birthday (mmddyy).

If your child is on a waitlist, please know that if a space becomes available for your child, a CUSD staff member will reach out to you by InformedK12 or email.

Once a family accepts an alternative school placement for their child, the child is removed from all other waitlists and is removed from their current school of attendance.

If a family accepts a neighborhood attendance area school placement for their child, the child will remain on any alternative school living waitlist the student is on.

If a family declines an offer for their child, their child is removed from that waitlist, but not other waitlists.

CUSD Open Enrollment (OE) Waitlist FAQ’s

I applied through an Open Enrollment window, but my child is not on the waitlist. Why not?

There are a variety of reasons your child may not be on the waitlist:

No tour/parent information meeting (alt school/program only) was attended. If you believe this was an error, please contact the alternative school/program office.

A different attendance area school or alternative school/program was not selected when the OE form was submitted (blank submission)

The attendance area school selected was the home attendance area school, and the submission was removed (this is already your child’s assigned school)

Incorrect grade level was entered, or the school chosen does not offer the grade level selected (for example, Faria, as well as Murdock-Portal, do not have 6th-grade classes)

Your child was not re-registered for the 2024-2025 school year, and their perm ID # was not considered active for the Open Enrollment lottery

I have a lower waitlist number but have not received an offer. Why not?

All open spaces in Kindergarten are not initially offered for a variety of reasons:

If a student has an IEP, the IEP must be reviewed and/or the team must meet prior to the offer. The student’s space is not offered to another student while this process is taking place.

Some spaces are held for potential retention for the current 2023-2024 students.

Why is my child’s waitlist number not moving?

Depending on the time of year, there may be few offers available. Our first priority is to place students in their attendance area schools. During summer, we have a lot of families moving into the district which may result in less open enrollment offers while we process all the students’ registrations to their attendance area schools.

Why is my child’s waitlist number getting higher?

While families continue to apply and/or accept offers into schools, priorities may be added to student’s waitlist numbers making other student’s numbers go higher instead of lower.

When will I get an offer?

The waitlist is monitored daily, and if/when an offer can be made, a CUSD staff member will email you. Offers can happen during the summer or after school starts through March 2025. Schools need to have adequate space to consider offers.

What does adequate space mean?

One opening from a student leaving does not mean that an offer will be sent to the first student on an Open Enrollment waitlist. No student currently residing within a school's attendance area shall be displaced by another student transferring from outside the attendance area. (Education Code 35160.5)

If you have any further questions, please CLICK HERE and submit an Open Enrollment Waitlist Inquiry form. Student Assignment will not be answering questions via phone calls. Due to the increased volume of inquiries coming in at this time, please allow up to five business days to receive a response. We thank you in advance for your patience.

The Student Assignment Office can be reached Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at (408) 252-3000 x.61-110. Please note,  walk-ins are not taken at this time .

If your family is currently attending a CUSD school and needs to update an address due to a move, please CLICK HERE  to submit your information via the Google form.

Your family must be fully residing within your new residence - we do not update addresses prior to the move.

A Student Assignment staff member will reach out to you once we get to your information in the queue . While you await an email, please prepare your Property Tax Bill or Final Buyers Statement (if purchased within the last six [6] months) if you own your home or your lease agreement if you rent along with a parent photo ID. You will be requested to send that information via PDF once contacted. If you have moved out of the district and would like to remain, our staff will work with your family if an Inter District Transfer request is possible.

What is an Inter-district Transfer?

An inter-district transfer is used when families wish to enroll their student(s) in a school district other than the one assigned to their home address. This applies to students trying to transfer into and out of the Cupertino Union School District (CUSD). All Inter-District requests must be initiated in the District of residence. Inter-District transfers are valid for one year only and must be renewed annually.

Students Living Within CUSD Boundaries Transferring to Another District

Families who live within the Cupertino Union School District boundaries may request for their student to attend a school outside of the Cupertino Union School District.

2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR: Families living with the CUSD boundaries requesting to attend another district must complete THIS FORM . Please note, if the student has an IEP, that must be attached to the Inter District Transfer request form for review.

Students Living Outside of the CUSD Boundaries Transferring into CUSD

Students who live outside of the Cupertino Union School District boundaries have the opportunity to request attendance to an attendance area school within the Cupertino Union School District from their new district of residence.

Inter District Transfer requests from families living outside of the CUSD boundaries  will start to be reviewed for the next school year in May.

The Cupertino Union School District reserves the right to deny transfer requests or release students for the following reasons: lack of facilities either district-wide or in a requested school, attendance area or program, scholarship, citizenship, attendance, or behavior.

An approved  IDT may be revoked or rescinded at a later date by CUSD if:

  • there is insufficient classroom space in the requested school and/or grade level;
  • there is excessive truancy, tardiness or late pick-ups;
  • Students do not have satisfactory attendance, citizenship and/or scholarship;
  • parent/guardian(s) provide false information in making a transfer request.

No student currently residing within a school's attendance area shall be displaced by another student transferring from outside the attendance area or by a student requesting an IDT.

Board Policy and Regulation 5117 related to the District's Inter-District Transfer process are found on Board Docs at https://go.boarddocs.com/ca/cusdk8/Board.nsf/vpublic?open .

The updated Minnesota Top 20 high school football rankings come with an explanation

The assignment is to produce a state football ranking that crosses classes. Complicating that — or making it more intriguing? — is that it is very difficult for smaller schools to keep up in the numbers game.

By Jim Paulsen

The toughest part of compiling a set of rankings that crosses the lines of classes is being truthful about the importance of school size.

At the rebranded Minnesota Star Tribune, an effort is being made to expand high school sports coverage further into Greater Minnesota. The new Minnesota Top 20, a ranking of the top 20 football teams in the state regardless of class, is part of that mission.

It’s this simple: Such a ranking is bound to be top-heavy with large-school teams because the deck is stacked in their favor.

The Minnesota State High School League combats that by segmenting football into seven classes ranging in size from the smallest schools — those with Nine-Person football programs — to the largest 32 schools in the state, some with more than 3,000 students, that make up Class 6A.

Schools of any size can produce high-caliber players, but football is largely a numbers game. More students means more players. More players means a larger talent pool from which to choose, leading to greater depth.

The importance of depth is that it keeps players fresh longer. When a large talent pool is available, players don’t need to play both offense or defense. It keeps them from wearing down, and it enables better focus. A running back who does not have to head back out to play defense after scoring a touchdown gets to recharge and be at his best when he next takes the field.

Teams at all levels have top players who play both offense and defense. The difference between the larger classes and their counterparts in the smaller classes is in how often that happens. Only the best players in Class 6A are asked to play both ways. At smaller schools, many players do it.

This week’s Minnesota Top 20, the second ranking of the season, includes six teams from outside Class 6A. You’ll see them labeled by their class. Now you know what they overcame.

Here are the Week 2 rankings, shaken up near the top by Lakeville South’s loss to Wayzata:
