Kerri has successfully trained a diverse population of students by helping them advance in their careers in early childhood development through implementing a child-centered, developmentally appropriate curriculum that uses positive guidance techniques. She has a Master of Science in early childhood education with a focus on students with disabilities, a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and an associate degree in early childhood education.

Kerri is on the advisory board of Informed Green Solutions, a national non-profit that has pioneered environmental education on green cleaning products for early childhood programs. She is extremely passionate about children's health, nutrition, and safety, especially regarding children with special needs.

Does this course prepare me for a certification?

Yes. You will be prepared for the Child Development Associate® (CDA) certification and credentialing process for two of the four available pathways. This course will prepare you for the Infant-Toddler and Preschool pathways of the CDA certification. The Infant-Toddler and Preschool pathways will prepare you to work as an educator in a childcare center.

The education hours earned can be applied toward both pathways. However, you will need to prepare a different Professional Portfolio and have a separate CDA Verification Visit for each age group to be certified in both pathways. This early care education course is designed to enable P-5 teachers to develop a basic understanding of the scientific principles of the life and earth sciences. This course will utilize research-based techniques necessary to teach these concepts in order to meet the diverse needs of learners across P- 5 grade environments. Topics will include the characteristics of life, biodiversity, heredity, energy flow, interdependence of life, cellular structure and function, earth systems, astronomy, and the biosphere (*This course will not serve as a science lab course or as a science elective.)

This early care education course is designed to enable P-5 teachers to develop a basic understanding of the scientific principles of the physical sciences and astronomy. The course with lab included will emphasize lecture material and hands-on experiences to enhance the quality and quantity of science taught to young students.

This course is designed to equip future teachers with the fundamental knowledge of understanding culture and teaching children from diverse backgrounds. Specifically, this course is designed to examine 1) the nature and function of culture; 2) the development of individual and group cultural identity; 3) definitions and implications of diversity, and 4) the influences of culture on learning, development, and pedagogy. This course has a required ten-hour field experience component. The field experience, in a public school, must be successfully completed in order to receive a passing grade in the course.

This course engages students in observations, interactions, and analyses of critical and contemporary educational issues. Students will investigate issues influencing the social and political contexts of educational settings in Georgia and the United States. Students will actively examine the teaching profession from multiple vantage points both within and outside the school. Against this backdrop, students will reflect on and interpret the meaning of education and schooling in a diverse culture and examine the moral and ethical responsibilities of teaching in a democracy. This course has a required ten-hour field experience component. The field experience, in a public school, must be successfully completed in order to receive a passing grade in the course.

This course allows students to explore key aspects of learning and teaching. The students will examine their own learning processes and those of others, with the goal of applying this knowledge to enhance the learning of all students in a variety of educational settings and contexts. This course is an Area F introductory mathematics course for Early Childhood Education majors. This course will emphasize the understanding and use of the major concepts of number and operations. Students graduating with an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education are qualified to become paraprofessionals (with an exam), teacher assistants, library assistants, day care instructors, etc. In addition, students will amass transferrable skills in communication, time management, critical thinking, problem solving, planning/organization, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Students graduating with a 4-year degree in early childhood education and passing the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE) exam (this type of test has a different name for each state) will be qualified to teach in grades PreK-5th grade.

Requirements for Teaching Licensure in Georgia

Georgia changed its teaching licensure requirements in 2015. To become licensed to teach in Georgia today you should first complete a teacher preparation program approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). Many online colleges in GA are approved, but it is important to confirm the status when you find a school to apply to. If you already have a bachelor’s or master’s degree but haven’t completed teacher preparation program, there are also alternate routes to become licensed, especially if you want to teach in areas Georgia considers “high need.”

Georgia’s new, four-tier certification process for beginning teachers has a Pre-Service certification, in order to qualify for a mandatory student teaching assignment. Candidates who successfully complete a bachelor’s degree, a teacher preparation program, and the Pre-Service requirements can earn an Induction certificate for beginning teachers.

Education Program Admission Requirements for Online Schools in Georgia

Obviously, admission requirements for online teaching degrees depend on the school, program, and degree level you’re looking to earn. If you want to earn an undergraduate online teaching degree in early childhood education, you’ll at least need a high school diploma, GED, or 60 transferable credit hours from an accredited community college. It helps to have emphasized education in your studies, but it’s not required.

If you’re looking to earn an online master’s degree in early childhood education, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. This degree should ideally be focused on education or a related field in order to qualify. Online colleges in Georgia usually have the same requirements for both doctoral programs and master’s degrees; albeit with the added requirement of a master’s degree to qualify for doctoral study. Most graduate programs in early childhood education expect applicants to take the GRE.

The B.S.Ed. in Elementary Education will equip you with the skills to develop culturally relevant curricula and educational practices, design innovative learning environments, and build effective school-family-community partnerships. During the program, all candidates will have an opportunity to work with children in each grade band as required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The grade bands are PK–K, 1–3, and 4–5.

Our program balances student experiences to include both educational theory and practice. You will take a range of coursework, including:

Methods courses in language, literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies

You will also get hands-on experience with different student populations thanks to university partnerships with a number of local school districts.

First-semester students participate in ethnographic studies of the communities surrounding a local school. These field-based experiences help you better understand the social and political contexts in which teaching and learning occur, and emphasize the value and impact of community.
Get involved in elementary classrooms each of the program’s four semesters. During this time, you are engaged in elementary classrooms where you observe, assist teachers, tutor individual children, work with small groups, and lead whole-classroom activities.
In your final semester, you will participate in full-time student teaching. During this time, you will be fully engaged as co-teachers and collaborators with experienced mentor teachers. All these clinical experiences are supervised and linked to specific elementary education courses.
Several courses are offered on-site at local elementary schools. This allows you to be part of the school culture while connecting with students, families, practicing teachers, and administrators.

The maximum number of admits to this program is 75 students per year, and in most years, the program is highly competitive. Although the program has minimum eligibility criteria, most applicants greatly exceed the minimum. If your grades do not represent your future potential, please use the essay/statements portion of the application to make your case for admission.

Selection Process

Applications are evaluated by a committee consisting of program faculty members. The rubric-based evaluation process holistically examines applicant materials, including consideration of GPA, essay, résumé, and the minimum eligibility criteria. Simply meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance to the program . Applicants who are not accepted may apply again in the next application cycle.

Admission Decisions

Admissions decisions are released in February for Fall Cohort admissions and in October for Spring Cohort admissions. Candidates will be notified via UGA email of their admission decision.

Individuals pursuing a career in early childhood education will find many opportunities in Georgia.

Getting Your Georgia Teaching Certification or Licensure

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission includes extensive information about how to obtain certification/licensure. You will need to familiarize yourself with this site, as it contains many resources valuable to both aspiring teachers and current teachers.

There are four main paths applicants can follow to obtain certification.

Traditional Routes (Pathways 1, 2, or 3) are available to those who have graduated from a U.S. state-approved teacher preparation program.
Alternative Routes or Non-Traditional Routes (Pathway 4) are available for “career switchers” who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
International Exchange Routes are available to those holding a teaching certificate from another country.
Permit Routes are available to performing artists, retired teachers, and native foreign-language speakers interested in entering the classroom setting.

To apply, submit an application along with an approved program recommendation form, experience verification, copies of out-of-state certificates, verification of content assessment, and official college or staff development transcripts. Fees vary according to the type of transaction.

Renewable certificates are valid for five years while non-renewable certificates are valid for one to five years depending on the title. These certificates include a variety of subcategories, as Georgia offers flexibility to bring more quality personnel into the classroom.

There are many professional organizations for teachers in the state of Georgia that share similar goals.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) provides professional learning for educators and has over 84,000 members statewide. It is the state’s largest and most professional organization for teachers, providing insurance, legal services, and a voice for professional lobbying.

The Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) has been supporting, protecting, and strengthening Georgia’s educational system for 125 years. Joining your local grassroots organization also enrolls you in the National Education Association (NEA), the nation’s largest professional employee organization.

The Georgia Association of Young Children (GAYC) increases public awareness of the importance of early childhood education and provides learning opportunities for early childhood educators. It is also an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Georgia Federation of Teachers (GFT) supports the economic, social, and professional interests of educators and is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a powerful 1.5 million-member group with multiple benefits.

Submit one set of official transcripts from each institution attended for all course work, undergraduate and graduate level.

Transfer credit posted on records of other institutions is not accepted in lieu of transcripts from original institutions. Please request a transcript from each institution attended.
Transcripts that have been opened, scanned or forwarded by email are not official and will not be accepted.
Official paper transcripts are accepted if submitted from the issuing institution and mailed to University of North Georgia Admissions Imaging Center, P.O. Box 1358, Gainesville, GA 30503-1358. Student paper transcripts are accepted only when issued to the student in a sealed envelope and submitted to Graduate Admissions unopened.
Official electronic transcripts are accepted if submitted from the issuing institution to [email protected] . Depending on the transcript service you are using, [email protected] may not be an available option. You may then select any admissions or undergraduate admissions @ung.edu address. Electronic transcripts forwarded via email from the student are not accepted.
International transcripts must have a course-by-course credential evaluation by an independent evaluation service that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. ( NACES ) or Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. ( AICE ). Evaluations must be sent directly from the agency to the Admissions office. Refer to the evaluator website for a full list of NACES or AICE members. Official evaluations must include certification that the applicant's course work and degrees earned are equivalent to course work and degrees earned from an accredited institution (as defined under Accredited Institutions in the Academic Information section of the Graduate Catalog ) and include a cumulative grade point average. Evaluations should be submitted from the evaluation service to Graduate Admissions. Applicants who have received degrees outside of the United States may be required to submit proof of English proficiency. Applicants will be notified if a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score is required. If required, scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Personal copies and photocopies are NOT accepted. TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two calendar years from the test date. Required minimum scores are, TOEFL internet based - 79, TOEFL computer based test - 213, TOEFL paper based test - 550, IELTS - 6.5.
Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) currently accepts transcript credential reports from four specified agencies. For more details, review the GaPSC website.
Graduate Admissions will retrieve transcripts of coursework completed in-residence at UNG. You do not need to order official transcripts from UNG.
If you completed your undergraduate degree at UNG and then attended another institution, request official transcripts only from schools attended after graduating from UNG.

Official Entrance Test Score

Submit official GRE General Test score report or official MAT score report if your undergraduate gpa is below a 3.0 but at least a 2.75 calculated in accordance with Graduate admission procedures and you do not hold a master’s in another field.

University of North Georgia’s institutional code is 5497 for submitting official GRE General Test.
University of North Georgia’s institutional code is 1111 for submitting official MAT.

Only test scores less than five years old will be considered.

Verification of Lawful Presence in the U.S.

Board of Regents’ policy requires all applicants accepted for admission or readmission to UNG seeking in-state for tuition classification provide validation of residency and lawful presence in both the state of Georgia and the United States.

Persons Aged 62 or Over

Must be a resident of Georgia and 62 years of age or older at the time of registration.
May enroll as a regular or auditing student in courses on a “space available” basis without payment of fees, except for supplies, laboratory or shop fees.

Students who do not meet the regular admission criteria may be granted provisional admission pending a successful admission appeal. See Appeal of Graduate Admission.

Provisional degree-seeking students

may register for a maximum of six semester hours of graduate credit.
will be reviewed to determine eligibility for regular admission following completion of six hours.
are not eligible for federal financial aid while enrolled in courses as a provisional student.
will not be allowed to continue in the program if a grade of C or lower is earned in any graduate course.
may apply for readmission after three semesters from the date removed from the program because of a deficient grade by submitting a new application to Graduate Admissions with a letter addressed to the program coordinator requesting readmission.

An applicant interested in taking graduate courses in education, but not interested in pursuing a graduate degree, may apply as a non-degree graduate student.

A student currently enrolled at an accredited institution (as defined under Accredited Institutions in the Academic Information section of the Graduate Catalog ) as a graduate student in good standing may apply to UNG as a transient student.

Permission to take courses does not indicate or imply subsequent admission into the program.
Students must receive pre-approval from the College of Education before enrolling in courses.
Requests will be considered on a space-available basis.
Admission is for one semester only.
Students who wish to return as a transient student for a subsequent semester must re-apply through Graduate Admissions.
Students may be required to submit an official transcript from the home institution in order to verify adequate prerequisite knowledge/skills.
Step 2 Transient Permission

Submit the online application for Graduate Studies or download a paper application. Transient admission is for one semester only. Students who wish to return as a transient student for a subsequent semester must re-apply to Graduate Studies.

One-time, non-refundable application fee of $40.

Submit a letter of good standing or transient permission form documenting that the student is not on academic probation or suspension or on disciplinary suspension at his/her home institution.

Note: The letter or form should indicate the course(s) the student is being allowed to take at UNG.

International applicants who must be issued an F-1 visa by UNG to enter the United States to attend school may not apply for completely part-time (less than nine hours) or online programs. This program is only offered as an online program and therefore does not permit F-1 visa student admission.

This program requires current teacher certification. The University of North Georgia is unable to offer a path to enrollment for foreign nationals without current teacher certification in the United States.

A candidate whose application is denied has the right to appeal the decision. A written letter of appeal must include strong evidence to support the basis for your appeal. The appeal should consist of information beyond what was previously submitted in your admissions file and detail your ability to be successful in graduate studies.

Students whose appeals are granted will be admitted as provisional students.
Students are not eligible for financial aid while taking courses under a provisional admission status.
Students may not appeal for regular admission.

Admission Requirements

A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
Students may be allowed to enroll in up to 12 credit hours with Liberty with the submission of an unofficial high school transcript and our High School Self-Certification Form .
Unofficial transcripts can be used for acceptance purposes with the submission of a Transcript Request Form .

Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

*Official high school transcript requirement may be waived with college transcripts from an accredited college/university showing at least 12 earned credit hours with an acceptable GPA.

Note: A 2.0 or above cumulative GPA is required for admission in good standing.

Transcript Policies

High school transcript policy.

Applicants may submit an unofficial high school transcript with a High School Self-Certification Form in lieu of a final official high school transcript in order to enroll in up to 12 credit hours at Liberty University.

Applicants may submit a college transcript showing 12 or more credits from an accredited institution and a High School Self-Certification Form in lieu of high school transcripts.

Students must submit official high school transcripts, or official college transcripts showing at least 12 credit hours earned with an acceptable grade point average (GPA) from an accredited institution, in order to register for additional courses.

The official high school transcript, GED requirement, and unofficial high school transcript with a High School Self-Certification Form can be waived if the applicant has earned an associate degree or higher.

Final transcripts must reflect all coursework and final grades received for grades 9-12, a graduation date, and an overall GPA. (Mailed transcripts must be in a sealed and unopened envelope.)

Unofficial College Transcript Policy

Unofficial transcripts combined with a Transcript Request Form can be used for admission. Official transcripts are required within 60 days of the admissions decision or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever comes first, and will prevent enrollment into future terms until all official transcripts have been received.

Before sending unofficial college transcripts, please make sure they include the following:

Your previous school’s name or logo printed on the document
Cumulative GPA
A list of completed courses and earned credit broken down by semester
Degree and date conferred (if applicable)

Official College Transcript Policy

An acceptable official college transcript is one that has been issued directly from the institution and is in a sealed envelope. If you have one in your possession, it must meet the same requirements. If your previous institution offers electronic official transcript processing, they can send the document directly to [email protected] .

If the student uses unofficial transcripts with a Transcript Request Form to gain acceptance, all official transcripts must be received within 60 days of the admissions decision or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever comes first. Failure to send all official transcripts within the 60-day period will prevent enrollment into future terms until all official transcripts have been received.

Military Transfers

If you have military-only transfer credits (completed basic training and enlistment), you must request an official military transcript. Please go to the Military Transfer Credit webpage to request your military transcript.

International Applicants

If you are an international applicant, you may be required to have your international transcripts reviewed. Information regarding the transcript evaluation process for international students can be found by visiting NACES .
