Health is the normal and healthy state of the body. It is a great source of peace and happiness.     

Health refers to a healthy state of mind and a body physically fit to have no disorder, illness or disease. In simple terms, health refers to a person's physical, emotional and psychological well-being.     

Hygiene refers to good practices that prevent disease and lead to good health, especially cleanliness, proper disposal of wastewater and drinking water supply. It refers to all the activities that are done to improve and preserve, maintain good health.     

The saying goes that health is wealth . It is truly said that of all things in the world, health is the most precious that one can possess. Money is definitely a nice thing. However, he cannot give any pleasure to a health man in ruins. As the body and mind are closely related, the mind cannot be healthy and playful without good health.   

          

Value and Benefits of Good Health: Life is a big fight and health is the best weapon to succeed in the battle of life. A healthy man can enjoy life in every way. An unhealthy man lives a miserable life. He may have intelligence, merit, and wealth, but he cannot use them and reap the benefits.       

Hygiene habits for good health

Pure water: Pure water is another source of good health. Much of the disease is caused by the use of impure water. People in the villages bathe often, and wash clothing and livestock in tanks. If this water is used for consumption, it can lead to disastrous diseases. To make the water pure, it must be boiled so that it does no harm.           

Balanced and nutritious food: Healthy food keeps our health good. Some of the food we eat serves as a fire to keep the body warm; another part forms the flesh to give us strength. Pure milk is the most nutritious food. Vegetables and many other things that we generally take are nutritious foods. A mixed diet is the best food for us. Stale and rotten food is dangerous for your health. Meals must be taken at fixed times. Overeating causes many diseases. Special attention is needed on food when an epidemic prevails.   

Cleanliness: Cleanliness is necessary for good health. This is the most important hygiene habit. Dirt spreads diseases because germs thrive there. They move with the dust in the air, so that a dirty man is easily attacked by diseases. The man, who has a clean body and clean clothes, is free of dirt and dust, and no disease can easily attack him. The daily bath is a good habit. He keeps our body clean. We should keep our clothes, bedding, food, utensils and everything else clean and clean. No dirt should be to be allowed to gather near our homes. We should also keep our teeth and nails clean. We should remember that cleanliness is close to piety.  

Eye Care: We should take good care of our eyes. Insufficient light and too much light are harmful to our eyes. The eyes become tired by the study and need rest. Bathing your eyes with cold water at night is a good hygiene habit.

Maintaining good personal health is the prime concern. Personal health refers to keeping oneself clean and healthy. However, it must be noted that personal health and community health are inter-related. The health of the community depends on the health and personal hygiene of its individuals, lithe individuals of the community stay clean and create a lively. Healthy and hygienic environment, then the community, on the whole, would be healthy. Good public hygiene is an aid to health, beauty, comfort, and social interactions.

For every individual, it is important to lead a healthy life. The 7th of April has been declared as “World Health Day by” the World Health Organization (WHO) in view of creating awareness about the importance of health. To stay healthy, it is important to understand the actual meaning of health and hygiene. Let us learn more about it.

The WHO defines health as – “a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” That is to say, a person cannot be termed healthy merely by being in a disease-free state. Physical and mental health are equally important and require a hygienic condition. Health and hygiene are two terms that are correlated.

Health and Hygiene

Hygiene can be outlined as the practice of a few habits in order to maintain good health, overall. Maintenance of hygiene can be at the community level (social hygiene) or personal level (personal hygiene).

Personal hygiene: It covers physical exercise, cleanliness, sleep, proper rest and other related practices such as keeping away from consuming alcohol, smoking, drugs etc. Many diseases can be prevented to a great extent just by maintaining good personal hygiene.

Social hygiene: The surrounding and other public places around us are our society. An individual’s mental and physical condition is greatly influenced by a good environment. Improper, unkempt and untidy surroundings and inappropriate ways of waste disposal in public places results in the unhealthy surrounding. Such practices can cause an alarming growth of rodents, pathogens and other microbes , which can make us unwell. Consequently, both social and personal hygiene are vital aspects.

A disease causes us discomfort or an uneasy feeling, which may or may not necessarily give a pain sensation. Although “disease-free” and “being healthy” are terms that are often correlated, they are completely different. There is more to “being healthy” than just being “disease-free”. Certain signs and symptoms are used to diagnose a particular disease. And, presence of a particular disease can lead to an unhealthy life.

States and territories have different rules for when you should wear a mask. Check your local health department’s website for the latest advice. 

It’s a good idea to wear a face mask when: 

  • in indoor public spaces including public transport, clinics and hospitals 
  • you are unable to physically distance from others 
  • you have tested positive, or think you have COVID-19, and are around other people.

To use a face mask properly you should:

  • wash or sanitise your hands before putting it on or taking it off
  • make sure it covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin
  • avoid touching the front of your mask while wearing or removing it
  • keep it in place – don't hang it around your neck or under your nose
  • use a new single use mask each time
  • wash and dry reusable masks after use and store in a clean dry place.

Mask wearing

Masks help stop the spread of viruses and reduce our risk of getting sick. 

There are many good reasons for wearing them. 

We wear masks to protect ourselves or to help protect more vulnerable people.

We may be required to wear a mask when using public transport, or catching a plane, or when visiting a medical or high risk facility.

If you see someone wearing a mask respect their choice. And keep a mask handy, so you can use it when needed. 

Maintain physical distance

It is harder for the virus to spread when there is more space between you and others. 

Physical distancing means: 

  • keeping 1.5 metres away from others wherever possible 
  • avoiding physical greetings such as handshaking, hugs and kisses 
  • practising extra care on public transport 
  • avoiding crowds and large gatherings 
  • practising good hygiene
  • getting tested and staying at home if you have any cold or flu symptoms. 

Avoid high-risk settings

You should avoid entering high-risk settings unless seeking immediate medical care, especially if you: 

are exposed to COVID-19 

are feeling any COVID-19 or flu symptoms 

have tested positive to COVID-19. 

High-risk settings include: 

  • residential aged and disability care services 
  • In-home care and disability care 
  • hospitals and other health care settings. 

Many people in high-risk settings are at risk of severe illness from COVID-19. It’s important to take extra care when visiting these settings. 

You should only enter high-risk settings when: 

  • at least 7 days has passed after testing positive 
  • you have no symptoms of COVID-19. 

When entering high-risk settings, you can protect yourself and others with COVID-19 safe practices including: 

wearing a mask 

being up to date with vaccinations 

practicing good personal hygiene. 

Practice good hygiene

By keeping good hygiene, you can protect yourself and others around you from the virus that causes COVID-19. 

Steps you can take include: 

  • washing your hands often for 20 seconds with soap and water 
  • using alcohol-based hand sanitisers when you can’t use soap and water 
  • avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth 
  • ensuring indoor spaces are well ventilated 
  • cleaning and disinfecting surfaces you use often, like benchtops, desks and doorknobs 
  • cleaning and disinfecting objects you use often, like mobile phones, keys, wallets and work passes. 

COVID-19 oral antiviral treatments

Oral treatments are available for people with mild to moderate COVID 19 who are at high risk of becoming very sick.

You need to start oral antiviral treatments within 5 days of symptoms starting. Have an early discussion with your GP or nurse practitioner whether oral antiviral treatment suits your health needs. It's also important to discuss and have a plan in place for getting treatment if you test positive.

Did you know that your feet are made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments? These parts work together so you can walk, run, skip, dance, and more. But this complexity—and the stress your feet undergo each day—also means there’s a lot that can go wrong.

Some common problems include:

  • Athlete’s foot . A fungal infection that causes itching, burning, and skin scaling.
  • Bunions . Bony, painful bumps that form at the big toe joint.
  • Corns and calluses . Thickened, often painful areas that form due to friction or pressure on the skin. These often develop on areas of the feet where bones rub against shoes. 
  • Hammer toe . A toe that curls downward at the middle joint.

Catching foot problems early is key to preventing them from getting worse. Pay attention to:

  • Pain, swelling, or redness
  • Tingling, burning, or numbness
  • Stiff or swollen joints in the foot or ankle 
  • Difficulty walking or balancing

If you notice any of these, or if you have new, severe pain that doesn’t go away with rest or over-the-counter pain medication, it’s time to talk to a doctor.

Simple steps for happy feet

  • Wash your feet every day. Use soap and water and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. A warm foot bath can be a relaxing treat! Moisturize any dry, rough, or cracked areas (such as the heels) and put on clean, dry socks when you’re done.
  • Check your feet often. Look for any cuts, sores, blisters, or changes in skin color. If you have diabetes, pay special attention to your feet, and see your doctor regularly for checkups.
  • Trim your toenails regularly. Cut them straight across and not too short. This helps prevent cuts and ingrown toenails. 
  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes. Choose footwear that fits you well—not too tight, not too loose. Your feet can change over time, so ask to have them measured each time you shop for new shoes. 
  • Keep your feet active. Stretches and exercise help improve blood flow, strengthen your feet, and help with flexibility. If you need to sit for a long time, put your feet up to improve blood flow and take frequent breaks to move your body.

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on the importance of hygiene. The WHO defines hygiene as “the conditions and activities that contribute to the maintenance of health and prevent the spread of diseases.”

This entails more than just maintaining our hygiene but abstaining from any unhealthy behaviors like leaving trash on the ground, going to the bathroom in front of people, and many more. By putting such a practice into action, we improve not only our health but also the quality of our lives.

Personal hygiene is regarded as including habits like keeping one’s body clean, drinking only hygienic water, washing one’s hands after using the restroom, and others. Public hygiene is the term used to describe the proper disposal of garbage and excrement, which includes routine cleaning, waste separation and recycling, and maintenance of the water reservoir for the city.

Kitchen hygiene is crucial if you want to avoid diseases. By consuming clean water, we can reduce our risk of getting sick. We can all utilize mosquito nets to keep ourselves safe while we sleep if it isn’t practicable. Pathogens transported by animals and insects can cause a variety of diseases. For instance, roundworms, malaria, and filarial are only a few of the diseases spread by flies and mosquitoes.

The oral cavity allows bacterial proliferation in the mouth. “Without the habit of proper brushing, these bacteria have a big chance of multiplying, posing health risks. In severe cases, they can enter the bloodstream, leading to various health problems,” explains Dr Banerjee.

According to him, the bacterial infection affects both diabetic patients and cardiac patients infecting the lungs. In a recent study, it has been found that poor oral health in pregnant women has been linked to an increased risk of premature birth. Neglecting nighttime brushing allows food particles to remain trapped between teeth, leading to overnight fermentation. This fermentation promotes bacterial growth in the mouth.

The expert reckons few changes that we can make in our daily habits to maintain the health of our teeth and oral hygiene.

1. Brush your teeth post breakfast

“It is suggested to brush your teeth immediately after breakfast instead of doing it early firs thing in the morning after waking up from sleep. It allows saliva to neutralize acids first. So, wash your mouth, have breakfast,” says the expert.

2. Never skip the bedtime brushing

Have a chat with your dentist and the cliché suggestion will pop up, brush your teeth twice a day. In spite of knowing all this, we choose to ignore brushing our teeth at night. However, brushing after dinner helps maintain oral hygiene by helping us get rid of the plague and germs that have accumulated throughout the day, suggests the expert.

3. Don’t forget to be regular with your dental check-ups

Dr Banerjee emphasizes regular dental check-ups and scaling every 7 to 8 months. Patients with different profiles may be susceptible to gum problems, and some may require scaling or maintenance therapy. These are essential for maintaining optimal oral health, provided there are no additional issues like gum disease or tooth damage.

4. Flossing and mouth-washing are also helpful

While it is advisable to brush after every meal and beverage, including coffee or tea, waiting for 10 minutes after eating allows the mouth temperature to normalize. Additionally, flossing between teeth after dinner is crucial for comprehensive oral hygiene. Using mouthwash is an important part of maintaining good oral hygiene. While mouth fresheners provide a temporary fresh feeling, they do not contribute to oral health.

5. Limit the consumption of foods that can harm your teeth

To maintain oral hygiene effectively, it is crucial to limit the consumption of food with refined sugar, carbonated drinks, and chocolate regularly. “It is a misconception that drinking milk helps build strong teeth, but this is only applicable only up to the age of 5 years,” Dr. Banerjee adds.

What are sleep cycles?

Humans sleep in cycles. The best known is REM, which stands for rapid eye movement because your eyes move rapidly during this stage of sleep. Scientists and researchers generally divide the cycles into two broad categories: non-REM  and REM sleep . I'm going to break down non-REM sleep into two further categories that are often used by sleep trackers.

Light sleep

Light sleep is the beginning of your sleep cycle and your body's way of winding down. Breathing, heart rate and muscle changes prepare your body for the deeper sleep to come. 

Light sleep is broken down into stages 1 and 2. The first stage is simply the act of transitioning from awake to asleep and makes up less than 3% of your nightly sleep cycles. 

Stage 2 is where light sleep gets to work. Fully asleep, your brain activity slows but includes bursts of electrical activity.  Neuroscience research suggests  that these spurts of electrical activity are a crucial part of your brain's process of transferring information from short- to long-term memory. That's why many scientists agree that sleeping after studying or learning new material helps you retain information at a higher rate. 

Most people spend more time in stage 2 during long periods of sleep than any other stage, and that's a good thing since it's such an important part of brain health and emotional processing.

Deep sleep is often confused with REM sleep, but the two are actually very different. Deep sleep is the part of your sleep cycle in which your body recovers from the day. Your body secretes growth hormones associated with cellular repair and rebuilding.

When you get enough deep sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed. Without enough, you'll feel tired even if you have a full night of rest. 

Typically, you'll see deep sleep on your sleep-tracking devices in the first half of your night. It happens in relatively long segments, while your heartbeat and breathing slow to their lowest levels. You need about 1.5 to two hours of deep sleep each night.  

This is also the stage of sleep where it is most difficult to wake you up. Deep sleep is as important if not more important than REM sleep when it comes to physical rest, so keep an eye on this stage if you're tracking your sleep patterns.

Perhaps the most famous of the sleep cycles, REM sleep is interesting and almost the stuff of sci-fi. Most people experience REM sleep around 90 minutes after falling asleep. 

REM sleep goes even deeper into brain recovery, dreaming and processing memories and emotions. This is the sleep stage in which your eyes move rapidly. If you've ever caught your dog or cat in a REM stage, you'll recognize the darting eyes.

Your brain waves in REM sleep are closer to wakefulness than deep sleep, and your breathing becomes irregular and speeds up. Blood pressure and heart rates also increase to near awake levels in REM sleep. 

It's not surprising that with so much near-wakefulness, this stage is when most of your dreaming occurs. 

Fun fact: In REM sleep, your arm and leg muscles are temporarily paralyzed by two chemicals in your brain that prevent you from physically acting out your dreams and punching your partner in the face instead of that alien bad guy.

Why it matters

Sure, you could do just as hundreds of generations of humans before we did and fall asleep without any sleep trackers and trust Mother Nature. I encourage you to do that, especially if large amounts of data about your body don't ease your mind.

S leep hygiene refers to healthy sleeping habits that are important if you're looking for overall improvement in health. Sleep plays a key role in overall well-being and also helps reduce stress. While sleeping, the body repairs itself and make new cells.

Rejuvenation is an important aspect of rest, and sleep is the best way to let the body rest and renew itself. Practicing good sleep hygiene can show amazing results, and these habits are important for a sound body and mind.

Importance of a good sleep

Quality sleep can reduce levels of cortisol, a stress hormone associated with visceral fat gain, especially in the abdominal area. Chronic insomnia is also associated with anxiety, depression, and other serious mental health illnesses.

Common signs of chronic sleep disorders include:

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Waking up feeling tired
  • Sleepiness during the day
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Fatigue and lethargy

Sleep and mental health are associated with each other, and lack of sleep can complicate mental health conditions. Meanwhile, if mental health issues are not addressed, they can affect sleep quality as well.

Here are five sleep hygiene habits that can help you fall asleep as soon as you hit the sack:

1) Turn off your devices

An effective sleep hygiene habit to improve your sleep quality is to keep all your electronic devices away before hitting the bed.

Blue light can cause disturbances to sleep by disrupting your sleep hormones. Buy curtains and blinds to keep away excess light from the outside. You can use a low-power night lamp just in case you need one at night.

2) Take a salt bath

A proven sleep hygiene habit to improve your sleep quality is to take a bath with magnesium-based bath salts.

Magnesium is a mineral that soothes the nerves and reduces stress. Commercially available Epsom salt bath tablets usually contain magnesium sulfate. Use a couple of them in your bathtub before sleep.

3) Take a warm shower

Take a warm shower before sleeping. as warm water can help maintain ideal core body temperature and reduce blood pressure.

It also helps soothe muscles, helping you fall asleep easily after a long tiring day. A hot shower can improve blood flow and keep the skin healthy and fresh.

4) Wear comfortable clothing

A very important sleep hygiene habit is to wear comfortable clothes, preferably made out of soft cotton. Tight clothing can reduce blood circulation and trigger a rise in blood pressure.

Well-ventilated clothing can help in the maintenance of ideal core body temperature. In the winter, you can opt for soft woolen clothes that are well-ventilated.

5) Manage stress

One of the most crucial sleep hygiene habits is to manage stress levels. Long-term stress can lead to insomnia and other severe mental health issues.

Easy stress management techniques can help a lot and can be easily followed at home. That can include cutting out external stress factors if possible, regular exercise to increase serotonin and dopamine levels, and meditating to calm your mind.
