Can ChatGPT Help Your Job Search? Here’s What Recruiters Say

Applying to jobs is notoriously a “numbers game” — the more resumes and applications you get out, the better your chances supposedly are of landing a gig. Resourceful job seekers are turning to new technology to help streamline the tedious application process: ChatGPT . With the free AI chatbot, you can produce a polished resume and cover letter in just seconds. But can using ChatGPT as a shortcut mess with your chances of landing the job? It depends.

Mindlessly copying and pasting whatever ChatGPT generates into a job application, resume, or cover letter and passing it off as your own is not the best use of the technology. “I would caution candidates against copying and pasting,” says Robert Lingham , a technical recruiter who most recently worked at Lever.

A human recruiter or hiring manager will likely be able to tell that you’ve submitted something written by an AI chatbot, because it might lack human tone, nuance, and context. Not to mention, ChatGPT could fabricate points about your experience and qualifications that are straight-up untrue, and lying on a job application is a bad idea in general.

This doesn’t mean that ChatGPT is off-limits for job seekers. “If you’re using ChatGPT smartly, and incorporating things that are true about yourself — more power to you,” says Mandy Tang, a career coach and founder of Rose Gold Careers . “I’m a huge fan of it.”

As ChatGPT touches more areas of our lives, there are new ethical questions about AI to consider. In our new free course Intro to ChatGPT , we’ll break down the risks and limitations of AI, and help you figure out how and when to use the technology in your life and in the products you build. Here are some ways you can use ChatGPT as a tool in your job search while maintaining your integrity and honesty as an applicant.

Let ChatGPT write a rough draft

Writer’s block is real, even when you’re writing about a topic you know a lot about — in this case, yourself. “Writing requires a lot of momentum,” Mandy says. “You need a prompt or something to react to.” Having ChatGPT write a rough draft of your cover letter or resume is a great way to get your writing process started, she says. (Here are some more tips for writing a bio about yourself .)

Rather than just copying and pasting the ChatGPT-generated response as-is, you can use it as inspiration to build something that’s more personal and accurate to you, Robert says. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to build a resume based on a job description, take a look at the skills that it pulls out, and see if they align with your own experience. “You might think, Oh that bullet is a good point, I actually did something similar to that ,” he says.

Proofread and fact-check

While ChatGPT can do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to applying for a job, it’s on you to make sure that the information you submit about yourself in a job application is truthful and coherent. “A large language model tool like ChatGPT still has boundaries,” Robert says.

It’s very important to proofread and edit whatever material ChatGPT provides. “It’s still a bot,” Mandy says. “ChatGPT will take its best guess based on your prompts, but you still have to read it with human eyes to double check that it makes sense and has a nice flow.”

Know how to write detailed ChatGPT prompts

How you word a ChatGPT prompt can influence the quality of the response it generates. As a large language model, ChatGPT is trained on datasets from the internet to predict the word that’s likely to come next in text using probability distributions over words. The more specific data you can train ChatGPT on, the more relevant the responses will be.

If you’re using ChatGPT to help you write a resume or cover letter, you’ll probably want to run at least 3-4 cycles, getting more specific and feeding additional information each round, Mandy says. “Keep telling it to refine things,” she says. For instance, you can tell ChatGPT to write your cover letter in the writing style and voice of an article or use a standout resume example as reference material. Or you can ask the AI to tweak your resume so that it includes measurable outcomes that align with the job description .

We’ll teach you how to write clear and specific prompts for ChatGPT in our free course Intro to ChatGPT, so you can boost your chances of generating a useful response.

Customize according to the job

Sending the same exact generic cover letter for every job is not great form: “You don’t want to send the same cookie-cutter template to every job, because it will look like you’ve just copied and pasted,” Mandy says. ChatGPT can help you tweak your application materials slightly depending on the position or organization, she says. “Try to include at least one specific detail about each company.”

For instance, you could give ChatGPT the job description and your resume and say: “Here is my resume. I am applying for a job as a UX Researcher. Can you optimize my resume so it fits the keywords in this job description?”

Brainstorm interview questions

You can also use ChatGPT to help you get ready for a job interview, Robert says. For example, say you’re interviewing for a position at a climate tech company , but you’re not super familiar with the space or field, so you don’t know how to prepare. Here’s a ChatGPT prompt you could use:

Pretend you are an expert in the climate tech space, and you’re interviewing a candidate for a Software Engineer position. Give me some questions that you would ask someone at the senior level. Please limit it to five responses and provide any links for any additional information.

As you can see, ChatGPT generates a solid list of relevant interview questions about key topics related to climate technology. With this list, you can identify your knowledge gaps and start thinking about how you might answer the questions.

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

The debate about using ChatGPT in your job search speaks to the deeper frustrations that people have about the hiring process. “For the candidate, it’s really difficult, confusing, and opaque when your effort is not tied to a result,” Mandy says. Lots of employers have gotten rid of cover letter requirements altogether. Considering that many organizations use AI in the hiring and screening process, why shouldn’t applicants be allowed to use it, too?

Ultimately, ChatGPT can make you look like the perfect candidate for a role on paper in just seconds — but you’re still expected to prove your skills on your own. “If you somehow hack a system in order to get in front of a recruiter or a hiring manager, you need to be able to talk about the things that are on your resume,” Robert says. “No matter how many prompts you give ChatGPT, and how creative you get, if you get into that seat, you need to be able to execute against it.”

Should I use AI in my job search?

The process of searching for a new job is rarely easy. Not only are you constantly checking job boards to find positions that both interest you and fit your skillset, but you’re also updating your resume and cover letter with every new application and editing these documents to suit each potential employer.

Using AI like ChatGPT for your job search can help you if you’re truly stumped for how to express your thoughts. Of course, it isn’t foolproof, either. Because this technology is so new, its output won’t be entirely accurate, and is no substitution for putting in the work yourself. The AI does the best it can with the information it’s given, which means it’s up to the job seeker to be both specific and accurate when inputting prompts, and to make any necessary adjustments to achieve a specific result.

If you plan to use ChatGPT for resume writing or crafting a cover letter, make sure you have a solid understanding of how to write both documents. After all, they’re a potential employer’s first impression of you; if you’re not well-represented because you relied on AI instead of your own skills, you’re not likely to get the job. ChatGPT can be useful for helping you come up with new ways to talk about your relevant skills and experience, but your personal touch is what will really make your resume and cover letter stand out.

Tips for writing a resume and cover letter

Whether you’re editing existing documents or starting from scratch, here are some tips to make sure that your resume and cover letter can help you make a good first impression.

  • Use simple, professional formatting. Use a template to ensure that you’re delivering something that makes you look your best and is easy to read.
  • Less is more. A busy resume can feel overwhelming for a recruiter. Show results where you can and leave off any unnecessary details.
  • Proofread. Even if you’re using ChatGPT to help you with your job search, you’ll still need to look over the results to not only make sure that the content is accurate, but that it’s grammatically correct and sounds like you.
  • Insert yourself. Make sure that your resume and cover letter are representative of you and not a chatbot. Your own personality should shine through, even if you’ve used AI to help you put things together.

At the end of the day, recruiters want to learn about you and whether you’re a good fit for a job. The best way for you share that information with them is with a well-written cover letter and a resume that’s easy to read .

What are the drawbacks of using ChatGPT to write a resume or cover letter?

Leveraging AI like ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter does have a few pitfalls:

  • This AI is very new technology and is certainly not foolproof. It’s constantly being tested and adjusted due to its newness.
  • It may accidentally generate inaccurate statements due to its limited knowledge of the world after 2021.
  • If you’re not proofreading carefully, you may gloss over some major errors. ChatGPT may generate content that is biased or harmful and it’s on you to catch those statements and not use them in your resume or cover letter. The AI may also repeat information between sections of a generated resume.
  • The AI works with the information it’s given. The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input.
  • If you’re not specific enough when entering your prompts, you will get vague, generalized output. Similarly, if your prompt is poorly formatted, the AI may not understand what you’re asking for.
  • ChatGPT may embellish some of your accomplishments. While it may be tempting to leave these in place, it’s never a good idea to lie about what you have and have not done.

This AI is not a replacement for doing the actual work yourself, but it can be a useful tool during the process of looking for a new job. Only you can truly know what you’ve achieved through your work and life experiences, and you’re the one who is best suited to crafting any type of resume or cover letter.

Entering resume and cover letter prompts into ChatGPT

The goal of using ChatGPT to write your resume or cover letter is to lessen the stress of creating these documents. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You still must give the AI very clear instructions about what you want it to generate.

Prompts for using AI to write a resume

You can use AI to review an existing resume and provide feedback or tailor your resume to a specific posting. Make sure you ask very clear questions about what you’re looking for, as well as providing very clear guidance to the AI about what its role is. In both scenarios you’ll need to include your resume in its entirety, but if you’re looking for tailored edits, you should also include the job posting.

Prompts for these scenarios might look like:

  • I am going to provide my resume and want you to act as a reviewer and provide feedback on it. How can I make it more readable? Are there any action verbs I should use? Am I using too many buzzwords?
  • I will provide you with a job description for a position I am applying for. Understand the key points and requirements for this role and summarize them. Then review my resume and provide feedback on how to tailor it for this job.

These might seem overly specific but if you’re not specific enough, you won’t get the response you’re looking for.

Prompts for using AI to write a cover letter

When using ChatGPT to work on your cover letter for a specific job, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your resume
  • The job description of the role you’re interested in
  • Information about what kind of tone you’d prefer

You can also ask the AI to review your cover letter for readability and help you get through a bout of writer’s block.

Prompts for these sorts of asks might look like:

  • Write a cover letter for a [position] role at [Company] in a professional tone. Use my resume and the job description as a reference.
  • I want you to review my cover letter for readability and relevance to a job post. I will share the job post as a reference. Tailor my cover letter for the job referenced in the post and adjust wording to make it more relevant.

These prompts may feel awkward to write, almost as though you’re explaining something to a small child. But the clearer and more specific you are, the more pleased you’re likely to be with the results.

While AI like ChatGPT is making some waves on the tech scene, it doesn’t totally replace human writing and editing skills, especially when it comes to resumes and cover letters. It certainly has value but comes with a few caveats. Use ChatGPT with caution, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for grammatical errors .

What is ChatGPT?

How to write a cover letter using chatgpt, make ai work for you: 3 extra tips, write a cover letter that stands out.

When applying for a job, you always provide a resume.

But a cover letter holds just as much weight — if not more — in hiring decisions. It gives you a chance to elaborate on your resume and explain why you’re right for the job.

Like a letter of interest , your cover letter is the recruiter or hiring manager ’s first impression of you. It should be professional, persuasive, and well-written.

With that in mind, written communication isn’t everyone’s strong suit, and that’s okay. There are resume builders and cover letter templates to guide the way. And if those tools aren’t enough, artificial intelligence (AI), like ChatGPT, can also help you put your best foot forward.

Here’s how to harness AI and write a ChatGPT cover letter that looks professional and wins over recruiters.

ChatGPT is an AI language processing tool that burst into pop culture at the end of 2022. As of June 2023, the program is available for free because it’s still in the research and feedback-collection phase, but there’s a paid subscription option called ChatGPT Plus.

AI research company OpenAI reportedly trained ChatGPT on a massive dataset of over 8 million documents and 10 billion words , which helped the program develop a complex understanding of the patterns and relationships in human speech.

When you ask ChatGPT a question or give it a command — like “Write a cover letter for me based on my resume” — the AI uses those patterns to create a string of words it predicts will best answer your question. The result is often eloquent and professional-sounding content.

In the short time it’s been available to the public, ChatGPT has become wildly popular. It gained 100 million active users just two months after its launch , setting a record for the fastest adoption of a new consumer app. It’s clear that people love this tool — and they’re using it for everything from computer code to resumes and cover letters.

While ChatGPT is a remarkable tool, it’s important to remember that it’s just that: a tool. The responses you get depend on the prompt you give, so it’s wise to learn how to use ChatGPT to your advantage. If you want to use this program to write your next cover letter, follow this step-by-step guide:

1. Gather your information

For ChatGPT to write your job application cover letter, you’ll need to give it some information about you and the job you’re applying for. The first thing you need to do is gather everything you’re including in the prompt. This should consist of the following:

  • Your contact information
  • Your work history, including a brief description of past responsibilities and personal achievements
  • Your educational history, including any master’s degrees and notable honors and awards
  • Your special skills or training relevant to the job posting
  • The job description and roles and responsibilities of the position

man-writing-on-notebook-sitting-on-the-floor-chat-gpt-cover-letter

This information will help you use ChatGPT as a cover letter generator that writes text specific to your desired job. The chatbot will analyze the job description for key information, like required education or skills, and use your work history and qualifications to draft a letter showcasing your abilities to meet the employer’s needs.

2. Prep the prompt

Once you have your resume and all other vital information handy, it’s time to ask ChatGPT to make a cover letter. Your prompt should be as specific as possible to help the AI create a tailored response that meets your needs.

Start your ChatGPT prompt by telling the chatbot what you’re looking for. For example:

I need you to write a cover letter for my application at [insert company name]. Please base the letter on the job description below.

Then, copy and paste the description from the original job posting . This encourages ChatGPT to use key phrases from the post and highlight your most relevant experience.

Next, you need to tell the AI chatbot a little about yourself. Input your contact information, your education history, and other skills from your resume or CV that you feel pertain to the position you’re applying for. You can even add your resume to the prompt to give the chatbot additional details. That way it uses as much information as possible.

Once you add everything you need, your prompt might look like this:

I need help drafting a cover letter for my application at [insert company name]. Please base the letter on the job description below:

[insert job posting]

Here is important information about me:

Contact info: [name, email address, LinkedIn profile ]

Work experience: [relevant work history]

Education history: [degrees, certifications, any applicable awards and honors]

Special skills: [relevant skills for the position]

I am including my resume below. Please highlight my experience and responsibilities from [previous company].

Once you’ve entered all the information above, simply hit “enter” and let the chatbot get to work. In a few seconds, it should have a customized cover letter ready for you.

Here’s an example of ChatGPT’s response to a prompt asking for a hypothetical cover letter for an aspiring marketing manager:

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

3. Refine the response

While ChatGPT can write a cover letter based on the details you entered, its initial draft may still have room for improvement. It might not highlight everything you wanted it to, and there’s a chance the writing might sound robotic.

Luckily, you can ask the chatbot to refine and rewrite its results as many times as you want. You could ask it to adjust the tone of your cover letter to make it more upbeat or formal, or write a paragraph about a specific team goal you helped meet.

You can also tailor the formatting at this stage. When ChatGPT creates resume and cover letter examples, it typically adds a traditional heading. Instead, you can prompt it to reformat the letter for an email and create a subject line. Here’s an example from a prompt that said “Can you make this cover letter suitable for email?”:

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

Once you have the formatting down, give the letter a thorough read. ChatGPT is a highly advanced AI, but it’s not infallible. Take the time to proofread the cover letter for any typos, incorrect information, or phrasing that doesn’t serve your goal of landing a job interview . At only a few hundred words, you want to make that space count.

For example, ChatGPT may point out hard and soft skills you’re missing from the job description instead of highlighting the ones you do have. If you spot these kinds of errors, simply ask it to generate a new response without them.

Remember, a cover letter is your opportunity to make a great first impression on your prospective employer. Take the time and ensure ChatGPT creates the best letter possible. It might seem like a lengthy process, but it’s likely shorter than the time it would take you to write a cover letter from scratch.

While ChatGPT can write a decent cover letter with even the simplest prompts, a few tips and tricks will improve its output. Try these suggestions to make your cover letter even better:

Keep the thread open

As an AI program, ChatGPT learns from the conversations and prompts it gets from users. But once you close the page, the program might “forget” its previous conversations. If you want to make changes to your cover letter, it’s best to make those requests in a single thread. This helps the chatbot remember your asks and you keep track of the changes you made.

woman-using-computer-at-coffee-shop-chat-gpt-cover-letter

Specify the letter length

While you may have a lot to say in your cover letter, keeping it concise is key. The ideal cover letter is no longer than three paragraphs that span about half a page, or around 150–300 words. ChatGPT may not yield this rule because it wants to include all of the information from the prompt. If it does present you with text that’s too long or too short, ask it to adjust.

Ask to include keywords

According to a 2019 report, over 99% of Fortune 500 companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) . These systems analyze your resume and cover letter and weed out any that don’t include certain keywords or meet their standards. If your letter doesn’t have the right information, it could get lost in the database.

Ask ChatGPT to include certain keywords and phrases in your cover letter. Read through the job description and look for job-specific information like required software knowledge, soft skills , and GPA requirements .

Tell the chatbot to mention these in the cover letter to increase your chances of getting out of the ATS and onto a hiring manager ’s screen.

Your ChatGPT cover letter saves you time and makes your job search a little easier — which is why so many people are using this technology. But no matter how many cover letters you and the chatbot write, remember to always give it a personal touch.

There are millions of people using this language model to help with their job searches, and while AI tools create great resumes and compelling cover letters, you want to avoid submitting something generic. Tailoring your prompt can help you write applications that stand out from other candidates, helping you land a job you love .

Key takeaways: How to write a cover letter using ChatGPT?

Due to the current hype, you probably already heard about it.

ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art AI language model developed by OpenAI, designed to generate human-like text based on user input.

  • understands context and generates relevant content
  • adapts to different writing styles and tones

Now that you know the key capabilities of ChatGPT, let's explore step-by-step how to use this powerful AI tool to write a cover letter.

By following these 7 steps, you'll be able to produce an impressive cover letter in minutes.

1. Sign up and create a free account on OpenAI

Head over to chat.openai.com and sign up for a free account. It's pretty straightforward — all you need is an email address, Google account, or Microsoft account.

Both the website and app are completely free to use.

Since ChatGPT is extremely popular, you might encounter some delays while signing up. If that happens, just wait a few minutes and try again.

Just FYI, there's also a paid version called ChatGPT Plus, which has a number of advantages, including faster response times. Currently, it's available for $20/month.

2. Ask ChatGPT what information it needs from you to write a cover letter

This tool is, first and foremost, a chatbot. Hence, you can actually ask ChatGPT what information it needs from you in order to create a well-written and personalized cover letter.

So, instead of guessing what information about yourself to include in the prompt, the AI tells you directly.

Use one of the following prompts to inquire about ChatGPT's requirements:

  • I'm in the process of applying for a job and need your assistance in writing a persuasive and effective cover letter. Could you instruct me on the necessary details I should provide you with to compose such cover letter?
  • I'm currently in the process of applying for a job and need your help in crafting a cover letter for me. Can you explain what information and details you would need from my end to create the most effective and compelling cover letter for me?

The chatbot will then give a list of information it needs, why it needs them, and some concrete examples.

For instance, here's what ChatGPT churned out after using the second prompt:

3. Ask ChatGPT to create an example prompt containing the required information

Now that you know what the AI needs from you to create a cover letter, you may need a little help with phrasing the full prompt.

After all, it requires a lot of information and details from you, including a job description. Hence, it may be a little complicated to formulate an effective prompt.

So, here's what to say next to make the chatbot create the full prompt for you:

  • Can you create an example prompt I should give you that entails all of the information you require?
  • That's good. Can you give me an example of a prompt that includes all of the information and details you said you need?

Then, GPT does the work for you and creates an example of the final prompt.

Have a look:

It might also be helpful to utilize some additional resources like  AI prompts by PromptVibes   to get some inspiration or guidance in crafting your prompts.

4. Copy the example prompt and fill in with your own information

Now that ChatGPT created an example of the whole prompt for you, copy it.

Paste the example prompt as a prompt. You'll use this as a template/inspiration.

And now comes the harder part. You need to replace all of the squared brackets or "sample details" with your own details and relevant information.

It shouldn't be too complicated since you already have inspiration for what to include and how to write it from GPT.

Rather than attaching the job description, copy it from the job ad and paste it into the prompt where required.

Plus, consider adding any extra specifications in the prompt...

5. Add any additional details to finalize the prompt

Now that you provided ChatGPT with the essential information for your cover letter, you can now specify any extra details.

These can include your desired tone, style, or word count.

Have a look at an example of how to specify any extra details for the prompt:

Additional instructions for ChatGPT

  • Word count: The cover letter should be between 200 and 300 words long.
  • Tone: The tone should be professional and persuasive but still natural.
  • Style: The text should be well-structured with clearly defined paragraphs.

Now your prompt should contain everything to ensure the AI generates a personalized and relevant cover letter.

Here's what the final prompt looks like:

Dear ChatGPT,

I am currently applying for the [position title] position at [company name] and I am seeking your assistance in crafting a compelling cover letter.

Could you please help me by using the following information to create an effective cover letter?

  • Job Description: [Insert a copy of the job description here]
  • Company Information: [Provide some background information about the company’s mission, values, and culture]
  • My Goals: [Tell me about your professional goals and how this job fits into your career aspirations]
  • My Achievements: [Provide some examples of your previous accomplishments that are relevant to the position you are applying for]
  • My Motivation: [Tell me why you are interested in this particular job and what excites you about the opportunity]
  • Additional instructions: The cover letter should be between [word count] words long. The tone should be [you can include multiple adjectives] . The text should be well-structured with clearly defined paragraphs.

Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to seeing what you create.

6. Run the prompt and review the output

Finally, run the prompt. It'll take a few minutes at most.

Here's the final cover letter written by ChatGPT:

When your cover letter is generated, ask yourself:

  • Do I like the output?
  • Does it include everything you wanted?
  • Is there something specific I don't like?
  • Is it long enough? Or is it too long?

You want to examine the cover letter to make sure everything is to your liking.

If you find a specific thing you'd like to adjust, feel free to specify this as your next prompt.

For instance:

  • That's good, but I think it's too long. Can you make it a little shorter?
  • That's good, but I don't like that every paragraph starts with "I". Can you re-phrase the first sentence of each paragraph?
  • That's good, but you used too many keywords from the job description. Can you re-phrase it and use the keywords from the job description less?

And, if you like the cover letter but you're not 100% convinced and can't pinpoint why — hit the Regenerate response button. Just make sure to save each output so that you have some options to choose from.

7. Proofread and edit the final cover letter

After the AI generates your cover letters, it's crucial to review them for any misrepresentations, mistakes, or grammar errors.

So, make sure to proofread and carefully edit the content before sending it.

Here are a couple of things that you might need to edit:

  • Grammar & punctuation. ChatGPT often struggles with commas and inconsistencies in the verb tense in particular.
  • Repetitive vocabulary. Replace repetitive or vague words with more precise and varied vocabulary to provide clarity and avoid redundancy.
  • Sentence structure & flow. Rearrange sentences or rephrase them to improve the overall flow of the text. Also, break up long sentences into shorter ones and combine short, choppy sentences.
  • Fact-checking. Verify any facts, statistics, or claims made within the text to ensure they are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Consistency in formatting. This mostly includes consistency in abbreviations or capitalization.

Additionally, keep in mind that ChatGPT's homepage warns about the possibility of generating incorrect or biased content — so always fact-check! More on ChatGPT's drawbacks later.

Ideally, you should use the AI-generated cover letters as a starting point for the final version you'll send. Or an inspiration, if you will.

As mentioned before, ChatGPT isn't perfect.

While ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in generating content, you have to be aware of its shortcomings when using this tool to create your cover letter.

Here are some of the potential challenges you may encounter when using ChatGPT to write a cover letter:

  • Limited understanding of context. ChatGPT might not fully comprehend the complexities of a specific job or industry, and may struggle to understand complex queries. This could lead to generic or less-targeted content in a cover letter.
  • Inaccurate or nonsensical responses. Since the chatbot doesn't possess human-level understanding, it might generate irrelevant, incorrect, or illogical information — which can decrease the quality of a cover letter.
  • Sensitivity to input phrasing . The way a prompt is phrased may affect the response generated by ChatGPT. Slight changes in phrasing can lead to different or inconsistent content in the cover letter.
  • Wordiness. ChatGPT may produce wordy or repetitive responses, which could result in a cover letter that's perceived as unprofessional or difficult to read.
  • Over-optimization for engagement. This can lead to a cover letter that contains catchy or captivating phrases but lacks the necessary information or professional tone expected in a job application.

If you don't want to use ChatGPT...

As you can probably tell, writing a cover letter with ChatGPT isn't so straightforward. It takes a lot of effort to put together a suitable prompt, adjust all of the details and information to be more personal, and has a couple of limitations overall.

What's more, this chatbot only provides you with raw text, which you then need to design and format yourself. You may also need to add a signature in a different text editor.

So, if you're looking for an alternative AI-powered solution to help you write a cover letter, consider Kickresume — a platform that specializes in creating professional resumes and cover letters (with or without AI).

Their AI cover letter writer tool uses the GPT-4 language model (used by ChatGPT, too) to produce cover letters without the need to create a lengthy prompt. The generated cover letter is well-formatted and designed and ready-for-use immediately.

Here's why you might want to give Kickresume's AI Cover Letter Writer a try:

How to use ChatGPT to write a cover letter (and why you should)

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

As if perfectly crafting a resume that encapsulates your entire career isn't difficult enough, job applications also require a cover letter. This letter is meant to help you express specific details about why you are interested in the company, what makes you qualified, and, ultimately, why the company should hire you.

If executed properly, a cover letter has the potential to make you stand out from other applicants by showcasing your genuine interest in the role, the experiences that make you a good fit, and what makes you different from other candidates who have similar qualifications.

However, synthesizing those ideas into a one-page letter can be a time-consuming and challenging task -- ChatGPT is here to help.

How to use ChatGPT to help craft your cover letter

Whether you've started writing a cover letter and feel stuck or don't even know where to start, ChatGPT can help you produce the cover letter of your dreams.

Also: How to use ChatGPT

With a couple of prompts and your direction, ChatGPT will create a polished cover letter within seconds.

1. Visit ChatGPT

To get started, visit ChatGPT's website. Signing in is entirely optional, but it grants you extra perks such as being able to use the chat history feature to review your responses at a later time. If you don't have an account, you can create one or sign in using your existing Google or Microsoft account.

If you haven't created an account, click on Sign up. Otherwise, log in with your OpenAI credentials.

2. Ask ChatGPT to write you a cover letter

To have ChatGPT generate a cover letter for you, all you have to do is ask ChatGPT to write a cover letter for the role and company of your choice. You should also include details about the experiences you want the cover letter to highlight.

For example, a possible input would be, "Can you write me a cover letter for the role of Associate Editor at ZDNET? I graduated from the University of North Carolina, majored in Journalism, and love technology."

That is only a general example; you can be as specific or general as you want. The more direction you give ChatGPT, however, the better your output will be.

I included screenshots of the results below. If you want to take a closer look or read with more ease, you can click on the upper right-hand corner to expand each photo.

3. Kick it up a notch and paste in the job description (optional)

If you want your cover letter to be tailored to the exact role you are applying for, you can copy and paste the job description into ChatGPT before asking it to write your cover letter. This method is by far the most efficient approach to getting your cover letter written in a way that reflects the exact role and duties.

As before, you also can include details about your own experience you'd like to include. Your prompt could look something like this, "Can you write me a cover letter for the position of [role title] at [employer]? This is the job description: XYZ. For context, I [include experiences you'd like to highlight]."

4. Co-edit your cover letter

Despite ChatGPT's best efforts and advanced capabilities, there might be something you want to tweak in the letter. If that's the case, it's super simple to change something. All you have to do is ask ChatGPT to tweak a specific aspect of your letter, and it will.

Are cover letters necessary for a job application?

Cover letters are not always required for a job application. However, almost all job applications either require one or give you the option to submit one. The benefits of a cover letter include having the employer get to know you more and helping you stand out from other applicants.

Should you use ChatGPT to write a cover letter?

ChatGPT can write an impressive cover letter within seconds, allowing you to focus more attention on other parts of your application that require more time and effort. ChatGPT produces the letter; you can always add your edits to give it your flair.

What should be showcased in a cover letter?

Your cover letter should help to set you apart from other applicants. Therefore, it should communicate what interests you about the role and what experiences make you a great fit. Try not to regurgitate the information already on your resume since you want this to showcase a different side of you.

ChatGPT Cover Letter: Prompts and Writing Tips

Paul Drury

1. Optimize your source material

2. give chatgpt a framework, 3. ask for alternatives, 4. perfect the culture fit.

There is no magic bullet when it comes to a job search. Your pipeline of potential roles will depend on the volume and quality of the initial effort. Finding an open position is only the first stage. You then need to send off a tailored application. When you are applying to multiple roles, keeping the quality of your job search content high can be tough. That is where a ChatGPT cover letter may be useful.

The benefits of using AI to assist a job seeker to perfect their job search writing are significant. Why would you not want to try out the services of a job search co-pilot? You can be sure that plenty of your fellow job seekers will be using it.

In this blog, we explore the process of writing a ChatGPT cover letter. We consider:

What is ChatGPT?

  • Benefits of using AI to write a cover letter
  • How to write a ChatGPT cover letter
  • Cover letter prompt writing
  • Risks with a ChatGPT cover letter

When you have a capable and informed assistant sitting behind that screen, you might be surprised at the output. In the worst-case scenario, you can ignore its suggestions. Yet, ChatGPT could well prove to be the missing link in your job search.

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is an advanced AI language model based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. Designed to comprehend and generate human-like text, it excels in various tasks like answering questions, creative writing, and casual conversation.

Trained on a diverse array of internet text, it can discuss a wide range of topics but lacks real-time data. Widely used in applications such as customer service, education, and content creation. It also maintains the context of the conversation, improving its relevance.

It does have limitations, including potential inaccuracies and biases, and it cannot browse the internet. Generative AI such as ChatGPT excels in the ideation process—something that could be game-changing during the stress of a job search where every job description looks the same.

The benefits of using AI to write your cover letter

If you have not used AI to generate content before, you may be somewhat hesitant to invest the time in something that does not have the best reputation for creating natural-sounding text. Having said this, if you embrace some of the tips in this article, the benefits of writing a ChatGPT cover letter could be game-changing for your job search.

  • Optimizes the writing process . It is likely that you will be writing more cover letters than you expect when you start looking for a role. Tailoring from scratch may take a significant amount of time and therefore you may choose to apply to fewer roles. If you are happy with the ChatGPT cover writing process, your job search productivity will skyrocket.
  • Helps figure out your story . When drafting and redrafting your cover letter is simplified, you may be surprised at just how much you change your career story. When something doesn’t sound quite right, generative AI can come up with multiple alternatives. Piece together your sales pitch for each individual role.
  • Mix up the formats . ChatGPT has learned from countless cover letter examples that are out there on the internet, so you can ask it to come up with different variants of a letter to decide on a structure that works for you. Unlike a human, it won’t moan at you when you ask it for another option.
  • Generate ideas on the go . We all know the feeling of getting a great idea and wanting to play around with it. When you are on the move, the lack of pen and paper can sometimes prove tricky. With ChatGPT you can play around with ideas on your mobile device and save them in the history for use when you get home.

How to use ChatGPT to write cover letter: 4 steps

It is likely that you have a working knowledge of ChatGPT if you are reading this article, so we will dive straight in. Can ChatGPT really come up with a cover letter that is both deeply personal to the candidate and tailored towards the specific role? Here are a few suggestions around how to approach the process:

While you could simply copy/paste the job description and your entire resume into ChatGPT to offer it some food for thought, this may result in irrelevant content for the role in question. It is certainly intelligent enough to match up the basics from the job description and the achievements from your resume, but it will often seize on accomplishments from roles that aren’t entirely relevant. Slim down the parts of your resume that you do not wish it to mention and offer more source material for the jobs that you wish it to highlight.

ChatGPT loves being told what to do. The result depends on the parameters of the task, so give it some guidance in terms of how you would like the cover letter to be structured. This may entail reading copious cover letter examples to develop your own opinion first. You can either dictate a structure or ask ChatGPT to copy the structure from an example. While every cover letter should have a flow, it is reasonable to ask it to focus each paragraph on a certain aspect of your application. It excels at writing succinct bullet points.

If you feel that a certain phrase doesn’t sound right, ask ChatGPT for more options. Tell it about the tone (and temperature) of the writing and maybe even give it an example of something that you have written as a reference point. Tell it to write at temperate 0.7 and then again at temperature 0.9. You will see a difference.

When a hiring manager reads the cover letter, it should sound like you would fit in well with the team. Use ChatGPT to scan corporate content from websites, social media posts and marketing materials and ask it to pick up on the language. There may be certain words or phrases that are commonly used. Why not incorporate a couple into the cover letter?

Cover letter prompt writing ideas

No matter how tailored your input, there is always a risk that ChatGPT cover letters may sound a little too perfect. If you wish your letter to truly stand out from the crowd (let’s face it, most candidates will be using it) you will need to come up with some thoughtful prompts.

The prompt writing process is not unlike the creative journey that your brain undertakes when it needs to come up with a perfect sentence. When you think about something, you subconsciously give your brain the ingredients to do the work. With prompt writing, give ChatGPT everything that it needs to produce the desired result. This may involve a considerable amount of trial and error.

Here are a few prompts that could lead to something spectacular:

  • “Draft a paragraph of 50 words highlighting my suitability for the role from the point of view of my industry expertise. Use the accomplishments from X role in my resume.”
  • “Compose four bullet points that highlight my main industry accomplishments. Use the job description to find the most relevant requirements for the role. Ensure that you only pick achievements that can be quantified.”
  • “Write two sentences to explain why I am changing careers. Base this on the information from my resume summary and your knowledge of the sectors in question.”

When writing prompts, it is important to set limits with word counts and number of sentences. Generative AI tends to be more verbose than you would need for a cover letter. You only get one chance to tailor your cover letter for each role, so play with the language until you are satisfied. ChatGPT is incredibly responsive to creative prompts.

Risks of creating a ChatGPT cover letter

Employers are unlikely to run a cover letter through an AI detector (that is a thing), but you should nonetheless make every effort to personalize the cover letter after Chat GPT has finished. If the cover letter does not sound like you when you start to speak during an interview, alarm bells will start to ring. ChatGPT can help with ideation and language choices. The result should still have a strong input from the candidate.

There is a small risk of factual errors creeping into the cover letter. Chat GPT may not be as informed as you when it comes to the nuances of your industry, so guard against any content that doesn’t sound quite right. If ChatGPT isn’t using the sort of language that you would use in a business meeting, you would be well advised to amend it.

Key takeaways

Job seekers need all the assistance they can get when it comes to finding a job. While they should be the driving force behind their job search direction, it doesn’t hurt to have some assistance when it comes to tailoring cover letters and resumes for specific jobs.

  • ChatGPT cover letters are a team effort between AI and humans.
  • Optimize content, experiment with formats and perfect your language.
  • Take care with what you ask ChatGPT to analyze as source material.
  • Create a framework for the cover letter to guide ChatGPT’s output.
  • Be creative with your prompt writing to produce truly unique content.

Do you need help crafting a personal cover letter for a job listing? With some provided information, ChatGPT can easily help you write a great cover letter in seconds. This can take away some of the stress associated with job applications. You'll just need an OpenAI account to get started. This wikiHow will show you how to use OpenAI's ChatGPT to write a compelling and professional cover letter for your next job application.

Things You Should Know

  • Log into your ChatGPT account and start a new chat. Have the job listing and your resume ready.
  • Generate a prompt with the request, the job description, your resume information, and a word limit.
  • If necessary, rephrase sections of the response to make it sound more unique and specific to your needs.

Step 1 Log into https://chat.openai.com/...

  • Write me a cover letter using the following job description and my resume for reference. Keep it under 500 words.
  • [Copy and paste entire job listing here (text only)].
  • [Copy and paste your entire resume here (text only)]
  • If you don't feel comfortable providing your resume information in ChatGPT itself, you can input it yourself later. ChatGPT will usually provide a field with [two brackets] where you can enter the needed information.

Be specific when using ChatGPT. Clear and concise prompts outlining your exact needs help ChatGPT tailor its response. Specify the desired outcome (e.g., creative writing, informative summary, functional resume), any length constraints (word or character count), and the preferred emotional tone (formal, humorous, etc.)

Step 5 Press ↵ Enter or click the arrow icon.

  • Be sure to edit any empty fields and enter information as needed, such as addresses, names, and headers.
  • Keep in mind that while ChatGPT learns and updates frequently, the system isn't perfect. It's possible to receive false information or answers that seem correct but don't make sense. Be sure to fact-check and reread the cover letter before sending it.

Step 7 Rephrase sections if necessary.

  • Copy and paste a section back into ChatGPT.
  • Type "rephrase this paragraph".
  • Press Enter .
  • Review the rephrased section. Replace the old section, or rephrase it again.

Pay close attention to the content ChatGPT generates. If you use ChatGPT often, you'll start noticing its patterns, like its tendency to begin articles with phrases like "in today's digital world." Once you spot patterns, you can refine your prompts to steer ChatGPT in a better direction and avoid repetitive content.

How To Write a Cover Letter With ChatGPT

Hate writing cover letters? Here’s how to use ChatGPT to shortcut the process — including tips on how to make it sound like it was written by a human.

10 months ago   •   6 min read

Hands up if you love writing cover letters!

If you’re sitting there with your hand firmly down, you’re not alone. Of all the factors in the job hunting process, cover letters are perhaps the worst — and the most controversial. For every recruiter who says that cover letters are unnecessary, there’s another who won’t consider candidates without one.

Manually crafting a cover letter for every single application is exhausting and time-consuming, but what’s the alternative?

Believe it or not, the answer may be ChatGPT.

(P. S. For a done-for-you cover letter that's more accurate than ChatGPT, check out the free AI cover letter generator tool . Unlike ChatGPT, it's been custom-built with the help of recruiters and writes incredibly effective and personalized cover letters)

Can ChatGPT really help you write an effective cover letter?

Yes — with the right input and customization. In other words, don’t simply expect to ask ChatGPT to write a cover letter and send it off as is.

But it can help speed up the process. By filling in ChatGPT with the appropriate information, you can automate a lot of the less-fun parts of writing a cover letter — leaving you more time to focus on the bits of the process that matter.

Here’s how to get started.

How to use ChatGPT to write a cover letter

  • A good cover letter starts in the same place as your resume — with your accomplishments. Locate the most recent version of your resume, or, if you prefer, a simple text list of your achievements and qualifications.
  • Find the job description. You can copy and paste this from the job posting (and it’s always a good idea to have a copy saved so you can reference it throughout the application process).
  • Write down some details about the company. You can copy these from the job posting or company website.
  • Create an account at the ChatGPT website (or sign in if you already have one).
  • Choose which version of ChatGPT you want to use. GPT-3.5 is the currently available free version, while GPT-4 is much better at writing but requires a subscription.
  • Write a prompt. We’ll go into more details about prompts later, but essentially, you should ask ChatGPT to create a cover letter based on your resume , tailored to the company and job description.
  • Edit your cover letter . You can use ChatGPT for this step or do it manually.

A two-step guide to writing an effective ChatGPT prompt

The most important part of getting good results from ChatGPT is writing an effective prompt. Here’s how to do just that.

Step One: Give ChatGPT a command

The first step to using ChatGPT to write a cover letter — or anything else — is to give it a command. This is how you tell it what you want to do.

Here’s the command we used — you can copy and paste this or tweak it to your liking:

Write a cover letter based on the RESUME, tailored to the JOB DESCRIPTION and COMPANY. Identify ways in which I specifically meet the requirements, have experience with the responsibilities, and will fit the company culture.
  • Use quotation marks at the start and end of the command to tell ChatGPT that everything inside them is your request
  • Use ALL CAPS for variables that you’ll fill in later (that’s the next step!)

Step Two: Fill in the variables

Now we need to define everything we put in capital letters. Add a line break (you’ll want to do this every time) and then type:

After this header, copy in your resume or a plain text version of your accomplishments and qualifications. There’s no need to reformat your resume, even if this section looks strange — ChatGPT will still be able to read it.

Add another line break, and then type:

--JOB DESCRIPTION--

Then copy the job description from the job ad. Add one more line break and type:--COMPANY--Add the information you gathered about the company — you can usually get this straight from the company’s website.

  • Typing RESUME, COMPANY, and JOB DESCRIPTION in capital letters tells ChatGPT that these should be linked to the variables in your command
  • Putting “--” at the start and end of these variables helps distinguish them from other headers in your resume
  • Don’t use quotation marks around “--RESUME--” “--JOB DESCRIPTION--” or “--COMPANY--"

That’s it — just two steps! Now let’s take a look at the results.

Example of a cover letter written with ChatGPT

Here’s the full prompt we used with ChatGPT:

And here’s the resulting cover letter that ChatGPT wrote:

So, how did ChatGPT do? Like most AI-assisted writing, it’s technically sound, but it’s missing something important — personality . A good cover letter should show the hiring manager who you are, not just what you’ve done.

If you want to generate a cover letter with real personality, try out an alternative to ChatGPT that's tailor-made to produce effective cover letters with personality: the AI cover letter generator .

That doesn’t mean this cover letter is bad — it just needs some editing.

How to edit a ChatGPT cover letter

You can keep using ChatGPT to edit your cover letter, or you can do it manually. The best approach? A bit of both!

Editing your cover letter with ChatGPT

If you want to see how far you can go with ChatGPT, try giving it some follow up commands. Try telling it:

“Rewrite the cover letter, highlighting [my commitment to sustainability, my experience with building LLMs].”

“Rewrite the cover letter in a [friendlier, less formal] tone.”

“Rewrite the cover letter, but avoid overly complex sentences or industry jargon. Instead, write as if you were talking to the hiring manager in person.”

“Rewrite the cover letter to be less than [100] words.”

Remember that ChatGPT is still learning — the more specific commands you give it, the better your results will be.

Editing your cover letter manually

Ideally, you’ll go over the cover letter on your own to (at least) inject a bit of personality, as well as to check it for accuracy. Think of the ChatGPT version as a first draft — all the ideas are there, but it still needs a bit of polish.

Here’s how to make your ChatGPT-generated cover letter sound a bit more human:

  • Add a couple of anecdotes from your life.
  • Be more specific about your key experiences.
  • Talk about why this job or company appeals to you in particular or what got you started in your career.
  • Showcase your personal values — for example, you might want to express your commitment to sustainable business practices or your passion for mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Rewrite the cover letter in your own natural voice.
  • Copy and paste the cover letter into a word processor like Microsoft Word or Google Docs and proofread for any spelling or grammatical mistakes.
  • Make sure everything in the cover letter is accurate and reflects what you want to say.

Potential drawbacks of using ChatGPT to write a cover letter

Using ChatGPT to write your cover letter isn’t necessarily a bad thing (unless you’re only copying and pasting the AI-written version and doing no editing of your own). That said, it does have some potential downsides.

ChatGPT cover letters are generic

ChatGPT is an AI model trained on a huge data set. That means that a lot of what it puts out tends to sound the same — which is a big problem if you’re trying to stand out in a sea of applicants. At best, it could make your cover letter forgettable; at worst, it could stand out as being obviously written by AI, which is a turn-off for most recruiters.

How to fix it: Include as many details as you can about the role, the company’s culture, and your own experiences. Even adding one or two personal anecdotes can go a long way toward giving your cover letter a more unique voice.

ChatGPT can’t convey emotional intelligence

AI like ChatGPT also lacks the ability to convey emotions effectively, making it more difficult to build a rapport with anyone reading your cover letter. This is particularly true if you’re applying for a role or industry that values creativity (like writing, design, or marketing), or for smaller companies and start-ups that encourage personal connections.

How to fix it: Don’t be afraid to tear apart and rebuild the cover letter that ChatGPT generates; or, just use a stronger alternative to ChatGPT (like this AI cover letter generator ). Try structuring your cover letter to tell a story about who you are and where you’re going next in your career — and why that makes you the perfect person for the job.

ChatGPT may not keep your data safe

OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) doesn’t permanently store conversations, but it does retain any data you enter for 30 days. Your conversations can also be used to improve the AI model and may be reviewed by human trainers — so if there’s something you don’t want anyone else to see, don’t type it into ChatGPT!

How to fix it: Limit your personal information as well as anything private or confidential — you can always manually add in any sensitive information later. Or use alternatives to ChatGPT that keep your data provide.

How to Use ChatGPT to Generate a Cover Letter That Will Actually Get You An Interview

Searching for a job these days can be overwhelming. There’s so much to do! That’s why many job seekers are now using ChatGPT to generate their cover letters.

However, there are some common mistakes you need to avoid when using ChatGPT. This guide will help you use this free tool to generate a cover letter that’s a good start for your job search.

Just follow the seven simple steps below and you’ll have a good cover letter in no time!

What is ChatGPT and how does it write a cover letter?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence-based tool developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022.

ChatGPT works by using natural language processing (NLP) technology to understand what you are trying to write. It then suggests words and sentences you can use to complete your writing.

To use ChatGPT, you first have to provide it with a prompt. A prompt is a form of instruction that tells ChatGPT what to do and how to respond.

The prompt is crucial when using ChatGPT. This is because it provides context and guidance for the model to generate a relevant response.

Without a good prompt, ChatGPT will return a vague and generic response.

How to use ChatGPT to write your cover letter

Even if you’ve never used ChatGPT before and aren’t sure how it works, you can quickly generate a cover letter by following the seven steps below.

If you want an even simpler way to do this, use our automatic cover letter generator . It goes through all seven of these steps within seconds and takes the guesswork out of the whole process.

Watch this brief video to see how it works:

Step 1 – Sign up for ChatGPT

Signing up for ChatGPT is super easy. Go to chat.OpenAi.com and register for an account with an email address, or a Google or Microsoft account.

You’ll then be taken to the homepage, which looks like this:

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

The chat bar at the bottom of the screen is where you type in your prompts.

Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to set up ChatGPT, let’s start using it to write your cover letter!

Step 2 – Begin your prompt

To get started, tell ChatGPT that you need a cover letter. You can also provide some basic information about the job you’re applying for and what you’d like to emphasize in your cover letter.

Here’s an example:

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

You don’t have to provide too much detail about yourself in the opening portion of your prompt.

That’s the next step!

Step 3 – Provide ChatGPT with a short bio

It’s time to give ChatGPT a little more information about yourself. This will help personalize the cover letter to highlight your unique skills and experience.

Here are some basic pieces of information you should include in your bio:

  • Your name – Start with your full name.
  • Your contact information – Then include your email address, phone number, and address (city and state are fine).
  • Your professional experience – Summarize the positions you’ve held, the companies you’ve worked for, and any notable accomplishments.
  • Your education – Include your degrees and the institutions you’ve attended.
  • Your skills and qualifications – Focus on those that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Write your short bio directly into the chat bar following your opening paragraph.

Step 4 – Paste in the job description

Now you need to provide ChatGPT with more information about the job you’re applying for.

To do this, simply paste the job description into your prompt, right after your short bio.

The job description will help ChatGPT generate a cover letter that is more ATS-friendly .

ATS stands for “Applicant Tracking System”. This is computer software that most companies use nowadays to help them manage the hiring process.

When you submit your job application it typically goes directly into an ATS database. Hiring managers then search for suitable candidates by typing keywords into the ATS search bar.

These keywords are related to the job and can include job titles, skills, responsibilities, personal attributes, education level, and more.

Pro Tip: To generate new lines in ChatGPT without hitting the Enter key (which tells ChatGPT to start generating content) just press the Shift + Enter keys at the same time.

Where do you find these keywords? In the job description! That’s why you should include it in your prompt.

When you add the job description, you can include the following sentence:

“Please make sure the cover letter includes the relevant keywords and phrases from this job description to make it ATS-friendly.”

This will prompt ChatGPT to generate a cover letter that is tailored to the specific job description and optimized for the ATS.

Step 5 – Paste your resume into ChatGPT

The final piece of your prompt should be your resume , which is full of details about your skills, experience, and qualifications.

Just copy and paste the text of your resume into the prompt.

You may want to explain to ChatGPT that you’re including your resume to help it generate a more personalized cover letter.

For example, you could say,

“I’m also including my resume for reference [paste resume here]. I want to highlight my experience in developing and executing successful marketing campaigns and showcase my ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.”

You can do ALL of this automatically with Jobscan’s new AI-powered cover letter generator .

With this tool, you won’t have to worry about writing prompts because they’ve already been engineered into the software.

Jobcan’s prompts incorporate your resume and the job description to generate a highly personalized cover letter for you with just one click !

Step 6 – Hit the “Enter” key

Once you’ve included all the necessary information in your prompt, it’s time to generate your cover letter!

All you need to do is hit the “enter” key, and ChatGPT will generate a unique and customized cover letter for you.

It should look something like this:

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

But you’re not done yet!

Step 7 – Fine-tune your ChatGPT cover letter

ChatGPT is a great tool for generating a first draft, but you still need to take the time to review, edit, and fine-tune it.

You’re not only looking for factual errors and grammatical mistakes, but also to make sure that your cover letter reflects your unique skills, experiences, and personality.

As powerful as ChatGPT is, the content it produces can sometimes sound a bit impersonal.

“As an applicant, you want to stand out from the crowd,” says Bonnie Dilber , recruiting manager at Zapier. “A lot of people are using ChatGPT so if you simply submit what it creates, it’s likely your resume and cover letter will be the same as everyone else.”

Here are some tips for making sure your cover letter has enough YOU in it.

  • Customize the opening – First impressions are key! Take the time to add a little personality to the beginning of your cover letter.
  • Make sure your cover letter matches the job description – Re-read the job description to confirm that your letter features the most important skills and requirements for the position.
  • Emphasize your unique skills and experiences – Your letter should show why you’re the best candidate for the job.
  • Make it clear and easy to read – Keep your cover letter concise and to the point. Employers receive lots of applications, so make yours easy to read.
  • Adjust the tone if necessary – Formal is appropriate for a corporate setting, while casual might work best for a small start-up.
  • Review for errors and typos – Use grammar checking and proofreading tools to check your work.

You can also try different prompts when fine-tuning your first draft to make it more personalized and targeted.

For example, you might ask  ChatGPT to rewrite your cover letter with more emphasis on your industry experience, your technical skills, or your key qualifications.

As you work on your cover letter, feel free to create multiple versions of it (make sure to copy and paste them into another document).

There are two advantages to creating multiple versions of your letter:

  • You can combine the best parts of each version to create the perfect cover letter.
  • You’ll get better at using ChatGPT. Remember, the more detailed and specific the prompt, the better the result.

Creating prompts is a skill. Like any skill, it can be learned and improved by practice, practice, practice!

ChatGPT is growing in popularity as artificial intelligence’s go-to for content generation. You probably have seen courses and other programs designed to help you leverage this new platform and are curious about its benefits.

Access to a platform that can create a cohesive document can be a godsend to people who dislike writing. While ChatGPT can help you increase your efficiency, you still have to review the documents it generates to ensure your cover letter gets noticed.

1. Open Your ChatGPT Account

Screenshot of ChatGPT homepage (updated)

You can easily create one if you don’t already have an account. Go to the site chat.openai.com . Once you’re there, you’ll see a prompt to open your account or sign up. You can create a new account with your choice of email, including connecting it to an existing Gmail account.

You’ll need access to your mobile phone since you’ll receive a six-digit code sent to your phone via text to confirm your registration. Once you’ve confirmed your registration, you’re ready to get started.

When you’re in ChatGPT, you’ll see you can stay with the free version, ChatGPT 3.5, or pay for access to ChatGPT 4. The features of ChatGPT-4 include faster responses and access to beta features like code interpreter, plug-ins, and browsing.

ChatGPT-4 has a limit of 25 messages every three hours, costing $20 monthly. If you’re wondering what other artificial intelligence options exist besides ChatGPT, you might be interested in learning about the best alternatives to ChatGPT .

2. Enter Your Custom Instructions

Screenshot of Custom Instructions for freelance writing cover letter

Before you ask ChatGPT to write content for you, you need to provide custom instructions to the platform. You do this in the custom instructions; you can access it by clicking on your name.

There are two sections where you input information about yourself. The first one asks: What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses? The second one asks: How would you like ChatGPT to respond?

The first section is where you can tell the platform where you live, what you currently do for work, your goals, and your interests. The second section is where you can talk about the tone and length of ChatGPT’s responses.

You can change the custom instructions at any time, but it will only affect the answers given after the changes are made. If you’re new to the platform, you may ask: What is ChatGPT and what can you do with generative AI? . We recommend checking out that guide if you're not too sure.

3. Submit a Job Description

Screenshot of job description provided to ChatGPT

Once you’ve completed your custom instructions, it’s time to provide a job description that ChatGPT can refer to when creating your cover letter. Remember, the key to writing an effective cover letter is addressing all the critical needs indicated in the job description.

If you’re using the free ChatGPT 3.5 version of the platform, there’s no limit to the number of jobs you can ask it to write cover letters for! You can also ask the platform to regenerate the response if you don’t like the first one you get.

You may be wondering what ChatGPT means for the future of writers and if it means enormous unemployment lines are in your future. You might find some comfort in learning the reasons why ChatGPT won’t take your writing job .

4. Prompt ChatGPT to Write the Elements of Your Cover Letter

Once you’ve submitted the job description, the next step is to ask for a cover letter. Instead of asking it to write one document, you can ask it to focus on each part of your cover letter to create a more focused one.

The Introductory Paragraph

Screenshot of introductory paragraph by ChatGPT

The first paragraph is where you provide basic details about who you are and why you want the job. You can also give a general overview of why you’re the right candidate for the job and why the position excites you.

Your Qualifications

Screenshot of summary of qualifications by ChatGPT

The next part of your cover letter summarizes your experience and qualifications and how they apply to the job you’re applying for. This is where you can include stories about relevant projects or situations to give the hiring manager or recruiter some insight into how you work.

Explain How You Align With the Company’s Values and Goals

Screenshot of aligning with values and goals of organization by ChatGPT

In this section of your cover letter, you want to illustrate that you understand the company’s mission and have done your research on the company. You want to focus on how your goals align with the organization’s, and you can also include positive factors you’ve heard about the company culture.

Close With a Call to Action

Screenshot of closing paragraph with call to action by ChatGPT

Your closing paragraph should be where you recap your interest in the job and suggest the next steps for proceeding with your application. Thank the reader for reviewing your application and indicating your interest in discussing the position or scheduling an interview.

This is where you can focus on the talents and skills you hope to bring to the team. If you want to learn more about the platform’s capabilities and how to generate the proper prompts, you may be interested in learning ways to learn how to write effective ChatGPT prompts for the best AI answers .

5. Proofread and Review the Generated Cover Letter

Image of a math mistake

After the AI generates the different parts of your cover letter, you can put them together and read it out loud to see if it makes sense.

Use the content ChatGPT generates as the foundation of your cover letter. You can add elements that add a personal touch to the cover letter, giving the reader an idea about your personality.

The content generated by ChatGPT can help you create a cover letter focused on what the organization hiring you is looking for. It would be best to remember that the platform is available to everyone, and you’re probably not the only one using it to help them apply for the job.

This is why adding what makes you unique to the letter ChatGPT generates can be a vital part of using the platform for job applications and getting noticed. Work Smarter, Not Harder With ChatGPT

Using ChatGPT can help you work more efficiently, increasing your productivity. You can use AI to generate documents as the foundation for any written content you’re working on.

Whether you’re looking for help writing a resume or cover letter, AI can help you quickly generate them. Using the content “as is” isn’t recommended, but making changes and corrections is more manageable than creating original content on your own and can help ensure that you touch on the key points the reader is looking for.

How to Use ChatGPT to Write a Resume

Already got your AI-assisted cover letter on hand? We walk you through the steps of creating a resume, too.

chatgpt for resume and cover letter

If you've just graduated college or you're looking for a new job, a solid resume can get your foot in the door. Unlike a cover letter, which has to be tweaked for every new application, your resume only needs to be updated every year or two to showcase your skills, experience, education, honors and references.

With the state of the job market, mass layoffs, and shift to the gig economy, investing time now to create an epic resume will pay off. Your resume is the first touch point you have with a prospective employer, but if staring at a blank page and trying to write about yourself is discouraging, then let artificial intelligence do the legwork.

AI Atlas art badge tag

ChatGPT , the breakout generative AI tool, can help you with the best practices of resume writing and speed up the process. If there's one thing AI is good at, it's synthesizing, structuring and summarizing information. And once you have your resume, you can use it to create a custom cover letter .

You can use a free version of ChatGPT or pay $20 per month for added features like the  most recent models , priority access during peak usage, and image generation.

If you're struggling to condense career highlights over decades into two pages, read on.

Creating a resume from scratch

Set yourself up for success by doing some preparation. ChatGPT needs context, otherwise it'll spit out generic content that's sometimes even wrong . I started by researching reporter resume templates and jotted down notes about past experience, education and accomplishments.

Then to find out what ChatGPT needs, just ask. "Can you write me a resume?" was my first prompt, and ChatGPT conveniently told me all the information to input so it could get to work.

ChatGPT Resume Format

I replied with all my information, outlined like this, and attached my preferred format:

Here is my professional summary: [paste]  Here is my work experience: [paste]  Here are my major clients: [paste]  Here is my education: [paste]  Please generate a list of skills based on my experience and format my resume like the example below: [paste template]

ChatGPT does a great job of organizing information into a cohesive format, but I wanted to change it so it flowed a little better (it put my education before my experience, making it look at first glance like I didn't have any experience).

Please reorganize the following sections in this order:

  • Contact Details
  • Summary
  • Experience
  • Major Clients
  • Skills

Looking good.

ChatGPT Resume 1-1

Keep your info less sensitive

You'll see that I didn't give the chatbot my contact details to add to the resume. I prefer to keep my sensitive information out of the model to avoid any future data breaches or unnecessary risk, so I'll add my email, phone number and address myself in the final version.

When reviewing ChatGPT's draft, I noticed two issues:

  • My 10 years as a full-time freelancer needed to be fleshed out, by adding noteworthy projects and long contracts.
  • The skills list was way too long.

Back in ChatGPT I wrote the following:

Please add two contract roles under Freelance Reporter and Writer in the experience section.

Freelance Reporter at NerdWallet, August 2022 - present. Tasks: Writing personal finance advice articles, providing insights and strategies to educate and empower everyday consumers in Australia. Topics include credit cards, travel points, frequent flyer programs, BNPL, credit scores, money management, and more.

Freelance Reporter at Decential, September 2022 - present. Tasks: Reporting on the people, projects and protocols in the world of web3. Cover news, interview founders, write deep dive features and commentary, and cover in-person events and conferences.

Then, instead of reducing the skills list, I asked that it be arranged in two columns. The chatbot put the info into a table, which I didn't like, so I asked that it be removed.

Skills Table

ChatGPT still had a hard time with it. I asked it again to present the info in two columns, with a space in between but without a table or borders. You can highlight a section and reply specifically there.

Skills List

But it still didn't work, so I stopped wasting time and did it myself directly in the document.

Final tweaks

Before I made my final tweaks, I asked ChatGPT to provide a short list of suggestions for how to improve my resume. It gave me some solid advice -- like highlighting achievements, quantifying results, tailoring my resume to a specific job, adding keywords and making my professional summary more concise -- but take it with a grain of salt.

For example, my professional summary shows my narrative abilities and doesn't take up much real estate. I did, however, add a section for notable projects.

Though some advice was relevant, like adding metrics to achievements and starting each bullet point with a strong action verb, the others weren't necessary. For instance, I didn't want to make my profile more concise, because that's where I show off my narrative ability for writing jobs. When using artificial intelligence, always trust your human instinct.

Last, I wanted to get it down from four pages to three, so I arranged my major clients into two columns and reduced the skills list. You can see the final version of my AI-created resume below.

Once ChatGPT is done with the nitty gritty, you can add the finishing touches yourself. I'll drop in my logo and byline hyperlinks, then it's good to go!

The Best ChatGPT Prompts for Resume and Job Advice

The answers you get from ChatGPT are only as good as the prompts (instructions) you give.

You’ll need good prompts to write resumes and to help you throughout the hiring process.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT isn’t just for crafting resumes; it’s a versatile tool that can assist you in the different and important parts of your job search.

Here are some effective ways to use ChatGPT prompts for comprehensive job search assistance:

  • Analyzing job descriptions : To ensure your application aligns with a job’s requirements, ask ChatGPT, “How does my resume match this job description?” This can help identify gaps or areas for improvement.
  • Online profile optimization : Enhance your LinkedIn with ChatGPT by asking, “How can I improve my LinkedIn profile for [INDUSTRY]?” ChatGPT can suggest changes to make your profile more attractive to recruiters.
  • Interview preparation : Generate AI interview questions before meeting with an employer to practice. For example, “Generate mock interview questions for a [JOB TITLE] position.”

Below, you can review an example of how a ChatGPT prompt and response will look .

Prompt : Based on this job description, how can I showcase my project management skills more effectively on my resume?

Answer :  Analyze the job description for keywords and phrases related to project management, such as ‘team leadership,’ ‘project delivery,’ and ‘budget management.’ Then, tailor your resume to include a ‘Project Management Highlights’ section. Here, detail specific projects relevant to the job description. For instance, you might write, ‘Directed a cross-functional team of 12 in the successful launch of a new software platform, completing the project 3 weeks ahead of schedule and under budget by 20%. This demonstrates your direct alignment with the job’s requirements and showcases your ability to lead, manage budgets, and deliver projects efficiently.

You'd have surely been the joke of the party if you had told someone in 2013 that you held within your hand a tool that could:

  • write love letters to your significant other;
  • hint at the secret ingredient of Coca-Cola, and at the same time;
  • debug your Python code.

Yet, our 2024 reality welcomes a new sheriff in town!

Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer or ChatGPT is a chatbot that can do all that and even more.

ChatGPT is scary good. We are not far from dangerously strong AI.

Elon Musk, founder, CEO, and chief engineer of SpaceX; angel investor, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; owner and CEO of Twitter, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; and president of the philanthropic Musk Foundation.

Launched as a prototype in November 2022, ChatGPT is a free large language model (a type of AI) that can:

  • create, translate and synthesize texts;
  • keep up their end of the conversation;
  • help you write your resume ;
  • perform other NLP (natural language processing) tasks.

…the best artificial intelligence chatbot ever released to the general public.

Kevin Roose, technology columnist, The New York Times, " The Brilliance and Weirdness of ChatGPT "

ChatGPT uses machine learning algorithms and massive amounts of digital data to produce life-like responses

The chatbot was created by the startup, Open AI. The Wall Street Journal notes that OpenAI is in talks about selling existing shares to interested investors, valuing the company at $29 billion.

ChatGPT is on the crest of the wave. Even though the chatbot itself can't review the number of registered accounts, various industry professionals are experimenting with it.

A New York Times article even disclosed that Google feels “alarmed” due to the potential of ChatGPT. More specifically, how large language models could replace search engines.

If that doesn't hint at the future, we don't know what does.

This leads us to a couple of our main points, which you’d find out more about in this article:

  • Can you use ChatGPT to write your resume for you?
  • What are ChatGPT writing prompts?
  • Eight ChatGPT prompts to improve your resume right now;
  • Emails, cover letters , and interviews turned into a piece of cake with ChatGPT;

Producing a resume to get you hired for the role is a never-ending story. One that takes up so much time and effort that some candidates may give up.

That's where ChatGPT comes in. Use its strengths to synthesize and write in a systematic and articulate style.

ChatGPT is best used when you:

  • are looking for details about the more common jobs;
  • need to shine among competitors;
  • decide on finally overcoming your writer's block.

What is more, ChatGPT can provide you with relatively life-like answers. So, consider implementing it within these three stages.

Resume reviews and re-rewrites to find out:

  • popular certifications ;
  • top keywords related to the job description;
  • skills , responsibilities, and requirements for the role.

Mock interviews to practice:

  • answering job-specific, technical questions;
  • shining light on your soft skills ;
  • using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) as proof of your capabilities.

Cover letter writing to produce a more succinct and stylized copy.

But before you get too far ahead of dreaming about how ChatGPT writes your whole resume, here's a heads-up.

Even though ChatGPT is a very powerful tool, it's still being developed and has some gray areas. Consider using a dedicated AI resume builder to make sure you are getting the best experience and efficiency out of AI.

The AI can't yet replace other resources you may need to write your resume, cover letter, or email.

It's a fantastic tool for reworking individual experience items and also learning the basics of writing for entry-level roles. But we'll get into more details below.

For now, let's focus on those ChatGPT prompts.

ChatGPT prompts: writing, reviewing, and enhancing your resume, cover letter, and job application

What are chatgpt prompts.

ChatGPT's prompts are conversation starters: the information you input, which is most often a question or a request.

This chatbot would never ghost you - in a few seconds, it responds in a human-like manner.

Here's a rule of thumb to remember about ChatGPT prompts.

Keep in mind

ChatGPT is not a psychic looking into a crystal ball.

It's up to you to provide the appropriate resume details, as the quality of the generated output depends on the quality of your input.

The more specific information you provide, the more specific answers you'd get. ChatGPT will try, but it can't fabricate your whole work history.

Only you know what you've achieved as a result of your experience.

ChatGPT can rather take your writing (in narrative form) and output texts, tailored based on the prompts you've entered.

So when using this chatbot to write a good resume, you should:

  • be thoroughly detailed and specific;
  • explain your experience to provide context;
  • ask clarifying questions to fill in the gaps.

The texts generated by ChatGPT should be your starting point.

It's up to you to improve your resume by:

  • adjusting and reviewing the outputs for accuracy (and professionalism)
  • editing, proofreading, and double-checking
  • asking for a second pair of eyes to look over your resume
  • adding your personal touch to stand out

Without further ado, let's dive right into a couple of useful prompts you can use to write your resume!

Using ChatGPT to review your resume

When training any AI to synthesize information, you need to start from the very beginning. That is, to assign specific roles to the chat participants.

In this case, ChatGPT should act as a resume reviewer, responsible for providing feedback on

  • Whether you have all the necessary resume sections ?
  • Is your resume easy to understand?
  • Would you need to add more achievements?
  • What about the types of action verbs ?
  • Finally, the keyword quantity: are the buzzwords provided enough?

Here's what your prompt would look like:

I want you to act as a resume reviewer. I will provide you with my resume, and you look provide me with feedback on it. Include feedback on the following points: - What appropriate sections to add for making my resume more readable. - How to make my resume easier to scan. - What kind of numbers and results can I add to my resume. - What type of action verbs should I choose. - Am I using too many buzzwords and how to replace them, if so. Do you acknowledge?

Your role would be to thus paste your resume. In this case, we've included:

  • Header - name, current job title, and email;
  • Education - all relevant degrees, institutions, locations, start-end dates, and any extra information you deem would be necessary for ChatGPT to understand your background;
  • Experience - start and end dates, company description, a narrative about what you did with a focus on skills and achievements;
  • Certificates - include all;
  • Technical Skills - as a list;
  • Soft Skills - with a focus on the outcomes of using the skills;
  • Most Proud Of - looking at the big picture achievements for the business;
  • Various resume sections - to shine a more detailed light on your experience.

#1chat gpt generated resume.png

ChatGPT didn't disappoint. Check out its synthesized responses below:

It noted that skills, certifications, and relevant professional memberships would be "beneficial" additions to your resume.

As well, a summary or objective - to put your "professional experience, skills, and career goals" in front and center - are always a good idea.

To ensure readability, the resume needs to have:

  • clear and consistent formatting with bullet points
  • action verbs at the beginning of the experience bullet points to showcase your responsibilities and accomplishments
  • bold or italicized texts to highlight important details
  • numbers or results in other resume sections (e.g. education or skills)
  • balanced use of buzzwords to demonstrate industry expertise

There was an overall assessment and recommendations for a couple of tweaks.

We wanted to get the most out of the ChatGPT experience, and that's why we followed up with these questions.

Just FYI, I have added Tech Skills and Soft Skills section above. Should I rename them or not?

ChatGPT recommends that we should personalize these headlines to ensure that they reflect our particular skill set.

Do I also have to include a summary or objective or not?

ChatGPT notes summaries and objectives are optional but good to have as they give recruiters (and the ATS) a snapshot of your skills and professional goals.

More so, summaries and objectives help candidates to stand out amongst their competitors.

As a reminder:

  • Summary statements - three-to-five sentences that shine a light on your most relevant and/or impressive achievements. Zooming in on your experience, skills, and qualification.
  • Objective statements - have a similar format, but prioritize your career goals. You're aiming to align your unique skill set to the role you're applying for.

Whatever you decide, remember to always tailor your summary or objective to the position you're applying for.

Can you tailor one for me, please?

In just a couple of seconds, the chatbot was ready for us. With a reminder that these are just examples and that they need to be further personalized to reflect your professional journey.

Tailor your resume to the job description with ChatGPT

Let's look at another scenario. What if you've found that dream job you'd really like to apply for? You have your resume ready…

… now it's time to tailor it with ChatGPT!

Start off with a prompt that once more specifies the roles.

You'd expect ChatGPT to assess the job description with a focus on these possible three key requirements:

  • years of experience
  • position name.

Asking the chatbot to thus provide you with feedback on how adequate your resume would be for the job you're applying to.

I'm going to provide you with a job description for a job I'm interested to apply for. You're going to read the job description and understand the key requirements for the position – including years of experience, skills, position name. After that I'm going to give you my resume. You'll go over it and provide feedback based on how tailored my resume is for the job. Do you understand?

You'd hence have two responsibilities.

First would be to input the full job advertisement that includes:

  • company description
  • information about the opportunity
  • responsibilities
  • requirements
  • compensation and other benefits

ChatGPT would take the time to synthesize this input, providing you with concise information about the position you're applying for and the role's main responsibilities.

You'd find out details about the ideal candidate with a focus on

  • soft / hard skills
  • preferred experience
  • salary range and benefits package.

Next, you'd have to paste your resume.

Here's the prompt you can use:

Now I'll give you my resume. Provide feedback on how I can tailor it to the above job post. Here's my resume: [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT HERE]

Make sure to include all relevant details, including

  • Industry Expertise

#1chat gpt generated resume 2.png

Here's what ChatGPT understood about the position.

Mandatory soft skills are experience with project management, good communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced (and highly collaborative) environment.

Additional experience in managing legal documents is desirable.

The main recommendations for this resume were to strongly emphasize project management experience, work with legal documents, and soft skills.

ChatGPT reminded us to include specific examples of how the candidate has:

  • successfully communicated and collaborated with multiple stakeholders;
  • managed competing priorities and tight deadlines;
  • worked in different time zones.

Regarding the education section, it noted that more details would make an even better impression (e.g. degree and majors , relevant coursework , and other educational activities).

Finally, it reminded us to include all languages the candidate is fluent in, as it might be desirable for this job.

Asking ChatGPT to rephrase your experience or for synonyms

We all know how important action verbs are, especially when talking about your professional experience. But sometimes candidates do struggle with making their resumes more illustrative of their achievements.

We’ve got you covered, let’s look at how ChatGPT can:

  • rephrase your experience items;
  • substitute verbs with more actionable synonyms.

Rephrasing your resume experience

Starting with this writing prompt that you can use to bring the action to the very front of your resume:

I'm writing my resume and I want to make it sound better. Can you go over my Experience section and make it sound more actionable?

  • • Received product feedback from customer interviews
  • • Planned out the product roadmap
  • • Presented market assessments to executives
  • • Collaborated with the marketing and development teams

You'd then need to paste in the details about the job you're applying for.

Don't forget to include any relevant information:

  • about the company
  • what is the role about
  • what you need to be successful
  • what's it in for you
  • and job type

Use this writing prompt:

Here's the Experience section I wrote: [PASTE FULL RESUME EXPERIENCE TEXT]

And here's the job ad I'm applying for: [PASTE FULL JOB AD]

ChatGPT then takes each experience bullet point and aligns it with the preferable job experience.

You'd see that each experience bullet is structured using the following formula:

“Action verb + skill + outcomes”

3.png

This information looks really professional, but it may not be accurate. ChatGPT fills in the blanks and sometimes makes things up along the way.

Including more actionable verbs

Here’s another alternative - what if you want to substitute the verbs you’ve used to make them sound more ready-to-go?

We suggest this ChatGPT resume prompt:

I'm sharing my Experience section on my resume. Please re-write it using actionable synonyms. [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

Make sure it’s followed by once again with the whole picture of your experience item, which you’d like to have edited. We’ve used the same example as above.

Wondering what the ChatGPT output looks like?

4.png

Both of these prompts are a great starting point to help you gain a better understanding of resume writing structures and editing. But, it's entirely up to you to make your resume sound more personalized.

Synthesis by ChatGPT: creating both resume summaries and objectives

Summarizing texts is one of ChatGPT’s superpowers. Use it to create a catchy resume summary or objective to highlight your strengths.

We’ll use one of the previous resume examples with the following writing prompt:

I'm going to share with you my resume. Go over it and create two examples: one of a resume summary and one for a resume objective. Here's my resume: [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

The more professional details you include within the prompt, the more likely the AI will be to learn about your specific achievements and strengths.

5.png

ChatGPT has created a wonderful base for you. If you decide, you can ask it to re-write the summary and objectives to provide you with alternatives.

Just don’t forget that ChatGPT does crash from time to time and it may wipe out all your current chats.

So ensure that you have all the summaries and objectives safely stored somewhere within a Google Doc or an MS Word file.

ChatGPT to improve the email you’d attach your resume to

Emailing your contacts.

We can't emphasize the importance of networking within the recruitment process.

As new job opportunities could come across to you from the most unexpected places.

Do you want to make a good first impression on an acquaintance, asking them to help you with your job search?

Use this ChatGPT trick/ prompt:

I'm going to provide you with an email I wrote. The email is about me, sending my resume to a distant friend who works at a company I want to join. Provide feedback on how I can improve it. Here's my email: paste full email text

Get inspired by one of our basic Enhancv templates.

Hey {NAME}!

It was great seeing you at {PLACE OF MEETING}. I hope work is treating you well today.

You mentioned something about {COMPANY NAME} hiring a {JOB POSITION} and I’d love to apply! I’m sending you my resume for your consideration. Find attached the appropriate files.

During my time at {PREV COMPANY} as a {PREV JOB POSITION} I carried out various communications projects, formed strategies, managed drafts, and editorial materials, established the company presence, amended legislation, a list of accomplishments, etc.

My most significant contribution to the company is that we achieved an increase of 55% within a year, thanks to my strategic and operational decision-making.

The opportunity you mentioned closely matches my field, which is why I am grateful to you.

Thanks for forwarding my resume.

Kind Regards, [Your given name]

ChatGPT recommends we should make this email more specific to the role we'd like to apply for by including

  • a clear and relevant subject line;
  • a sentence (or two) describing what you talked about when you met your contact and why you decided to send your resume across;
  • instead of just listing what you've achieved, show how these accomplishments make you the ideal candidate for the job;
  • contact details and a call to action (e.g. "I would appreciate the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications with you. Please let me know if there is a good time for us to speak.");
  • a more formal salutation.

Emailing recruiters

Once again, we start our chat by helping the AI imagine the scenario.

A ChatGPT writing prompt when sending your resume out to hiring managers is:

I'm going to provide you with an email I wrote. The email is about me, sending my resume to a recruiter from a company I want to join. Provide feedback on how I can improve it. [PASTE FULL EMAIL TEXT]

This is the email we wrote to get the attention of hiring managers:

Subject: [POSITION] - [MY NAME]

Dear Hiring Manager, I am very interested in applying for the [POSITION] that is listed on [COMPANY].

I've attached my resume and cover letter.

If there's any additional information you need, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely, FirstName LastName Email Phone LinkedIn

ChatGPT really enjoyed how straight to the point our email was, but recommended to

  • Include the recruiter's name in the greeting for more personalized communication;
  • Show why you're a good fit by describing how your experience aligns with the role you're applying for;
  • Double-check the spelling and grammar;
  • Keep the subject line short and specific to the role;
  • Instead of listing your contact details, include a professional signature with all the relevant information;
  • Request the recruiters to contact you if they happen to have further questions or queries.

The chatbot even optimized our version:

Adapting your cover letter to your resume with ChatGPT

Formal tone of voice.

ChatGPT can surely come in handy when writing your cover letter , especially if you need help with tailoring it to align with your resume.

Imagine that you want your cover letter to sound a bit more sophisticated and refined.

We used this ChatGPT prompt to produce a more formal cover letter:

I want you to act as a cover letter writer. I will provide you with my resume, and you will generate a cover letter to complement it. I want the cover letter to have a formal, professional tone, as I will be applying to a corporation. Do you acknowledge?

Once ChatGPT understood its tasks, we followed up with these commands:

My preferred job will be [at Home Depot/ company name / as a Lead Analyst / role /, Finance Business Services/department/]. Here's a job description: paste full job advert text

And here is my resume: paste full resume text

Once again, make sure you paste in the full job description and all the text that makes up your resume.

#1chat gpt generated resume (1).png

With a little more personalization to demonstrate achievements and further why this candidate would be perfect for the role, this ChatGPT structure could work wonders:

8.png

Informal tone of voice

There are cases when you would want your cover letter to sound more casual.

For example, if you're applying for a startup or SME (small and medium-sized enterprises), where you know the company culture is more friendly.

ChatGPT has you covered:

I want you to act as a cover letter writer. I will provide you with my resume, and you will generate a cover letter to complement it. I want the cover letter to have a more informal tone, as I will be applying to a startup. Do you acknowledge?

The "I will be applying to a startup" can be substituted with specifics about the company you're applying for.

Find below the resume, which we pasted in ChatGPT with these two prompts:

Ok, here's my resume: [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

And here's the job title and company: [PASTE FULL JOB AD TEXT]

Acing your interviews with ChatGPT: practice giving STAR-format answers

You probably can't believe it, and neither could we when first heard about it. But, yes, ChatGPT can also help you get ready for your interview.

We all know those standard questions which interviewers tend to ask. What is more, you could use ChatGPT to also provide you with a list of some of the most popular questions they may ask for your specific role.

To these questions, hiring managers expect you to structure a response using the STAR method.

Where you describe the:

  • Tasks at hand
  • Actions you undertook
  • Results you achieved.

Practice the STAR method with these ChatGPT prompts.

Here's my resume. If you've understood my background, say "understood". [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

Once ChatGPT comprehends your experience, it's time to practice with the following prompt:

Now, can you write me a sample answer (based on my resume) which follows the STAR format : [WRITE INTERVIEW QUESTION]

In our example, we've used this popular interview question:

"Have you ever had to develop a new skill on the job? Tell me about your approach to the learning process."

A few moments later, ChatGPT's provided us with this answer.

Situation: with a little background and definition of what the actual problem was

Tasks: showcasing the thought process and research, alongside soft skills .

11.png

Action: detailing step-by-step the relevant actions, supplemented once again with skills

Results: it's a numbers game!

Changing your resume for different audiences with ChatGPT

For the next examples we have used this resume to demonstrate how it could be targeted to suit three specific audiences:

resume writing with chat gpt.png

Presenting your resume to a recruiter

It's often that resumes are analyzed by recruiters who may not have the same technical understanding as candidates.

That's why it's vital to simplify your experience by making it more understandable to the general audience.

Of course, that is without losing the chance to highlight your strengths ( keywords ) and responsibilities.

ChatGPT can also do that for you. Use this prompt to make your resume more comprehensible for the general audience:

Here's my resume. I'm afraid it's too technical for a recruiter. Re-write it so it's more accessible to recruiters: [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

Resumes for C-level executives

In some cases, you may need to make your resume a bit more technical to impress readers (in the example below, we've referred to C-level executives).

Save time tailoring your resume by pasting this ChatGPT prompt:

Here's my resume. It's going to be reviewed by a C-Level executive and I'm afraid it's not technical to capture their attention Re-write it so it's more actionable and it shows my capabilities better: [PASTE FULL RESUME TEXT]

Pay attention to how ChatGPT re-wrote these three sections:

ChatGPT’s gray areas and limitations?!

As much as you'd like to believe it, ChatGPT isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Even though the buzz around this chatbot is massive, remember that this tool has been around for just three months. What is more, all users are currently using a demo version/ free research preview that is being further developed.

So, yes, there are some gray areas concerning this all-powerful AI.

ChatGPT can lead communication (by mirroring and assessing data), but it can't think instead of you (at least, yet).

When chatting with this large language model, remember to bring about your creativity, judgment, and details of your experience so that your resume writing experience is an effective one.

Without further ado, check out these seven ChatGPT gray areas and how you could address them.

  • ChatGPT isn't perfect.

The chatbot was trained on a large dataset that includes information up to 2021. Meaning that it doesn't have the most up-to-date information regarding some roles and their specifics.

ChatGPT may also produce typos from time to time, so make sure you double-check spelling and grammar, and that the output text actually makes sense.

Remember that due to the large amounts of traffic it may crash, so always ensure that you've backed up the texts you'd like to use.

OpenAI's model is still in its infancy: imagine what it would be able to do in just a few months' time.

  • Sometimes ChatGPT doesn’t understand a prompt.

Here are the sort of questions it struggles with:

  • Unclear or vague ones;
  • Requiring a personal opinion or subjective judgment;
  • Real-time information or access to external resources;
  • Complex logical or mathematical reasoning;
  • Poorly formatted prompts that contain grammar errors or are written in a way that is difficult to understand.

Specifically, about that personal opinion topic, ChatGPT can't make those final judgments for you regarding which roles you should emphasize and which ones you'd leave out of your resume.

  • ChatGPT can repeat the content between resume sections.

Do you have a friend who never thinks before he speaks? Well, this model is sort of like your friend, as it never self-edits what it produces.

Meaning, it can repeat similar experience bullets in different sections, etc.

This can sometimes be of benefit to you, as some recruiters tend to skim over your resume, without diving too much into the nitty-gritty details.

  • If you tailor a resume from a job description, ChatGPT has the tendency to repeat the text in your resume 1:1.

When assessing your resume, recruiters expect to see a narrative that makes sense and shows that you can replicate your past successes within a new environment.

They don't need to preview their job advert, regurgitated as a generic response by an AI.

Always remember to customize ChatGPT's output text to best suit your professional story. As well, you can always ask the chatbot to regenerate a response, thus providing you with an alternative.

  • ChatGPT embellishes achievements.

Yes, ChatGPT is capable of hallucinations. That is when a large language model outputs nonsense or incorrect information.

It also has the tendency to make things up as it goes to fill resume gaps.

We advise you to use ChatGPT to re-write or edit your current resume. If you start from scratch, this may lead to plenty of confusion along the way.

  • If you want it to use specific/technical language, ChatGPT tends to use repeatable language.

What's more, this AI doesn't know precisely how your work has impacted the business and the context of your achievements.

Always re-write your resume after you've completed using the prompts to capture all the tiny details that make you the professional you are today.

  • ChatGPT may not be ideal for non-traditional career paths.

Let's say you want to make a dramatic career change. Or that you've changed about six or seven jobs in the past two years. Perhaps, you're an entrepreneur looking to get back to the office.

When you paste your full resume, ChatGPT will shine an enormous spotlight on your "red flags" (e.g. gaps in work history or ever-changing roles).

In this case, it may be wise to use it to help you with re-writes of individual elements, rather than the whole resume.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT can be used as a clever instrument in resume writing, helping you to stand out and overcome your writer's block;
  • The quality of ChatGPT's output depends on the quality of your input, so make sure you elaborate by providing it with all the relevant details;
  • You could use ChatGPT to review and re-write (synthesize and rephrase) your resume or specific sections;
  • This chatbot is amazing at targeted communication: from tailoring your resume for a specific job or audience to emails and cover letters with different tones of voice;
  • Use ChatGPT to practice answering interview questions with the STAR method;
  • ChatGPT is still in its infancy and has some gray areas, so don't fully rely on it to re-write your resume: instead, use your sound judgment to add a personal touch.

3 key takeaways

  • How to use ChatGPT to write your resume
  • Using ChatGPT to update your existing resume
  • A faster way to write your resume with ChatGPT technology using Teal's  AI Resume Builder

Everyone on the internet seems to be talking about artificial intelligence (AI) lately—and especially a tool called ChatGPT.

But what's ChatGPT exactly? And how do you access it? Here's everything you need to know about how the platform works, and how you can leverage it for your resume or CV.

What is ChatGPT and how does it work?

You may be more familiar with artificial intelligence than you think.

If you've ever used AI-enabled assistants like Siri and Alexa, where you can ask questions and get an immediate response in return, you've experienced firsthand how artificial intelligence can integrate with your day-to-day life to provide real-time answers.

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer—ChatGPT for short—is a powerful new artificial intelligence tool developed by OpenAI, one of the world’s most ambitious AI labs, that uses natural language processing (NLP) technology to help people communicate with computers more naturally and intuitively.

Can I use ChatGPT to write my resume?

Now that you’ve gained some insight into ChatGPT let’s talk about using AI tools like ChatGPT to write your resume. So … can you?

Yes, of course, you can. And you should. (But only if you follow the process below!)

Creating a resume requires a lot of effort; AI tools like ChatGPT make this easier by…

  • Saving time: Quickly generate the content of your resume based on the prompts and information you provide.
  • Customizing your resume : Match the details to the job you're applying for.
  • Identifying strengths : Suggest skills or experiences that you may have overlooked but are relevant to the job.
  • Increasing your chances of success : Create a well-written, accurate, and amazing resume that showcases your skills and experience in the best light.

So, let's get started by going over how you can start using ChatGPT to not only write your resume, but also to update, enhance, and review your resume to help you hit your career goals.

How to use ChatGPT for resume writing

So you've decided to try out artificial intelligence to help speed up your process. When it comes to AI and ChatGPT, the use cases are seemingly endless, but here are four ways to start to leverage ChatGPT for your resume.

1. Use ChatGPT to write resume achievements and tailor your resume to a job description

You've heard it's important to tailor your resume to the job description to show that you're a qualified candidate for the role—but how can you ensure your bullet points reflect that? In addition to using the free Achievement Assistant tool within the AI Resume Builder , try leveraging ChatGPT for this part of the process:

  • Log into Teal and go to "Matching Mode" in your Resume Builder, then select one of the jobs from your Job Application Tracker to focus on.
  • Go to the "Job Description" tab and scroll to the "Responsibilities" section.
  • Copy the responsibilities and paste them into ChatGPT. Enter this prompt: "Write resume achievements with metrics based on these job responsibilities."
  • Watch the magic happen!
  • Copy the output from ChatGPT and, one at a time, paste them into your Teal Resume Builder as achievements.
  • Make sure to carefully proofread and edit the bullet point achievement, tweaking it as needed using the Achievement Assistant tool. Remember: AI tools are intelligent, but they're not foolproof. You want to ensure you actually have the experience that AI says you do, and you want to double-check for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clarity.
  • Turn on and off the achievements that make sense for the job you're applying to.

Use Teal's new AI functionality to create tailored achievements

Alternatively, you can skip these steps and just use Teal's AI functionality to create custom resume achievements.

Not only will these assets be created quickly and easily to speed up your resume workflow, but they’ll also be crafted using your previous work experience and the job description of the target role, to make your achievements increasingly relevant.

Try it yourself for free.

2. Use ChatGPT to write a professional summary

Professional summaries are another hot topic. Some recruiters and hiring managers say they're helpful as they speak to a candidate's career in aggregate and highlight their key accomplishments. Others argue it's a waste of space and job seekers should dive right into their skills and achievements.

We're fans of the professional summary, especially if you have multiple years of work experience or are pivoting to a new career or industry.

Here's how to use ChatGPT to write a professional summary for your resume:

  • Once you've tailored your resume in the Teal AI Resume Builder , copy the text.
  • For the ChatGPT prompt, say: "Write a professional summary using my resume."
  • Press "Shift" + "Enter."
  • Paste your resume into ChatGPT.
  • When you get your result, click "try again" to generate two more versions.
  • Pull your favorite phrases from each option and create a cohesive, reflective, customized, and eye-catching resume summary.
  • Paste the final summary into the tailored resume you plan to use.

Write your resume summary with AI

Again, you can use Teal's AI functionality to handle this for you and create professional summaries in seconds. And with the combo of Teal's Resume Builder and Job Application Tracker , it's easy to save all your job search assets in one place. This eliminates the need to keep multiple documents and go back and forth between ChatGPT, job descriptions, and your resume.

@teal_hq Your professional summary is your opportunity to talk about your career as a whole. Not sure what to write there? Use the AI feature in your Resume Builder to do the summarizing for you. 3. Use ChatGPT to write a cover letter

And now, the most controversial topic: cover letters.

Spend five minutes on LinkedIn or TikTok and you'll see heated debates over the value and importance of cover letters, whether recruiters and hiring managers even read them, and whether they're an outdated part of the job search in 2023.

But still, many jobs you apply for may request a customized cover letter that speaks specifically to the company and position.

Much like tailored resumes, cover letters should highlight what you’ve accomplished relevant to the role while persuading those hiring that you’re the best fit for the job. It might sound complicated, but it doesn’t have to be— ChatGPT can help you write your cover letter seamlessly.

How to do it:

  • Once you've used "Matching Mode" to create a resume tailored to a particular role in your Teal Job Application Tracker, go ahead and copy the text from that resume and paste it into ChatGPT.
  • Head back to your Job Application Tracker and go to the job description for this role. Copy and paste the requirements and responsibilities into ChatGPT alongside your resume.
  • For the prompt, write, "Write a cover letter using my resume and a job description."
  • Edit your new cover letter in Google Docs as needed before saving and sending it.

Cover letters are another area where the AI Resume Builder can help you skip the middle man, quickly generating a cover letter relevant to the role you're applying for and your work history.

4. Use ChatGPT to update and improve your existing resume

In addition to using ChatGPT to create or write your resume from scratch, another powerful use case is leveraging it to make key revisions to your existing resume. Here are four examples of how you can utilize ChatGPT to make improvements:

  • Rewriting your work experience with more impactful language:  One effective way you can enhance your resume with ChatGPT is by asking it to help you incorporate fresh language, power words into your work experience to better articulate your successes and make your achievements stand out.
  • Personalize your professional summary for a specific job:  It can't be understated how crucial it is to align your resume with the particular role that you're applying for. Use ChatGPT to modify your existing summary so that it's more aligned with the responsibilities and requirements of the position. For every new job you apply for, ChatGPT can help you make the necessary adjustments to your resume to ensure you position yourself as an ideal fit.
  • Provide relevant content ideas for your skills, experiences, and achievements:  When you're hitting a wall on a resume refresh, ChatGPT can be an excellent resource to replace or revamp the existing information included in your work experience or skills sections. To ensure you get the best recommendations from ChatGPT, be sure to share both the text from your resume, and from the job description to help ChatGPT identify gaps or improvements.
  • Review your resume for punctuation and grammar errors:  Another recommended use of ChatGPT is to have it review your current resume for any grammar mistakes, typos, or awkward sentences you might miss in your proofreading. Think of it like a second pair of eyes available 24/7 and never tired.

5 best practices on using ChatGPT for resumes

Can ChatGPT really help with your resume? Yes, it absolutely can. However, successfully using ChatGPT requires more than a simple command, you'll need to use your best judgement and be thoughtful about the inputs that you provide, to ensure a quality output.

To help you leverage it most effectively, here are five best practices to keep in mind:

  • Be specific and provide detailed prompts to ChatGPT . Some may argue that the AI space is oversaturated and that everyone will get the same outputs if they enter the same inputs. Although your AI-generated response may not be 100% unique, it can be modified once the foundation's in place. Writing effective prompts is the key to getting the most out of ChatGPT's capabilities.
  • Provide relevant assets to help ensure personalization. In each section above, we asked ChatGPT to review a specific job role, and/or a resume to help it craft a more personalized answer. We highly suggest when using ChatGPT that you provide it with all the resources it needs to create an answer that's crafted specifically for you.
  • Review and edit the output from ChatGPT to ensure it's accurate and professional. Again, we don't condone lying about your experience (with our without AI!) Use in this capacity is meant to assist job seekers, not to fabricate career histories that can't be backed up with truthful examples.
  • Proofread and double-check for errors before sending any materials generated by ChatGPT. Though artificial intelligence is sophisticated, it's not always 100% spot-on. (And neither are we as humans.) We always like to recommend a tool like Grammarly for a grammar and spell check.
  • Ask for human feedback before submitting . Whether you ask a mentor, friend, or career coach for input before submitting, it's a good idea to get a second set of eyes on your resume before submitting it to keep a human eye out for any potential problems.

Start leveraging ChatGPT to write a more effective resume

Your resume is more than just a list of your qualifications and experiences; it's the ticket to your dream job. With the help of tools like ChatGPT, a job seeker like you can create a well-written, targeted, and accurate resume that showcases your strengths and experience in the best possible light.

Using the steps above, you can leverage the power of AI to take your resume to the next level, but Teal can streamline this process even further, helping you work smarter and more efficiently.

Teal's AI functionality is already integrated with ChatGPT, offering a range of tools to optimize your resume, including summary and achievement generation, cover letter composition, and more—without toggling between screens and programs. Say goodbye to tedious manual work and hello to quick and easy resume building.

How Mark Cut Job Application Time by 60% Using Teal

We help you find the career dream..

I asked the new ChatGPT to find me a job and was surprised by what it came up with

  • ChatGPT can now do your job hunting for you.
  • The bot can access the internet through a new update, allowing it to trawl job sites.
  • I tested ChatGPT's recruiting skills. It sped up the job-hunting process but did make some mistakes.

Insider Today

ChatGPT now looks like a very useful tool if you're trying to find a job.

Not only can the bot write convincing cover letters and spruce up a CV — but a new update means the AI assistant can do your job hunting for you.

As companies advertise on various platforms and job boards, finding the right role can mean trawling through several websites and monitoring company careers pages.

While sites such as LinkedIn draw from many of these sources, it can still feel like you risk missing the perfect role by not covering all your bases.

This is where the updated version of ChatGPT can be helpful.

OpenAI recently rolled out a version of the bot equipped with its new flagship model, GPT-4o, which can access the internet. The company's previous GPT-4 model could also link up with Bing but was available only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

Job seekers sick of wading through hiring boards may turn to recruiters to cut out the legwork. With a new update, ChatGPT can act as your free personal recruiter.

Job hunting

I decided to put ChatGPT's recruiting skills to the test.

I told the bot about the sort of role I was looking for, explained my experience, and sent it on its way.

The bot returned with six opportunities, all matching the experience listed on the CV I supplied. It also helpfully summarized each role's main features — location, salary, and responsibilities — and included the date the ad was posted.

Related stories

The results were largely accurate, though the salary of one job was slightly misstated.

It also provided a few tips on applying for the roles, suggesting I tailor my CV to the role and find people from the company to connect with on networking sites like LinkedIn.

After identifying my favorite job opportunity, I asked the bot to run another search for who I should contact at the company while applying.

The bot came back with five managers and recruiters in the correct department and even wrote me a short LinkedIn message I could send to follow up on my application.

The bot did get confused by its own hallucinations once or twice. In an earlier test, ChatGPT sent me one job I couldn't track down. After some probing, the bot acknowledged the role probably wasn't real.

I found that asking the bot to send full links to the jobs that I could copy and paste helped keep it focused on providing genuine opportunities. Still, it underlined the importance of treating the results skeptically before putting any work into an application.

It's not news that ChatGPT can help job seekers write a killer cover letter, but the new update allows for some more specific back-and-forth.

The bot can also crawl the web to find out who else is on the team and suggest where to direct follow-up messages.

ChatGPT even wrote me an analysis of how well my experience aligned with a job's requirements, evaluated my likelihood of landing the role, and gave me some tips to increase my chances of getting it.

I also asked ChatGPT to tailor my CV to the role and write a quick cover letter .

Within about half an hour I'd found a job and had an application ready to go.

While I didn't submit it, I know what to do next time I'm in the market for a new gig.

  • Artificial intelligence

The potential of AI technology has been percolating in the background for years. But when ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, began grabbing headlines in early 2023, it put generative AI in the spotlight. This guide is your go-to manual for generative AI, covering its benefits, limits, use cases, prospects and much more.

Amanda Hetler

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence ( AI ) chatbot that uses natural language processing to create humanlike conversational dialogue. The language model can respond to questions and compose various written content, including articles, social media posts, essays, code and emails.

Uses of natural language processing.

ChatGPT is a form of generative AI -- a tool that lets users enter prompts to receive humanlike images, text or videos that are created by AI.

ChatGPT is similar to the automated chat services found on customer service websites, as people can ask it questions or request clarification to ChatGPT's replies. The GPT stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer," which refers to how ChatGPT processes requests and formulates responses. ChatGPT is trained with reinforcement learning through human feedback and reward models that rank the best responses. This feedback helps augment ChatGPT with machine learning to improve future responses.

Who created ChatGPT?

OpenAI -- an artificial intelligence research company -- created ChatGPT and launched the tool in November 2022. It was founded by a group of entrepreneurs and researchers including Elon Musk and Sam Altman in 2015. OpenAI is backed by several investors, with Microsoft being the most notable. OpenAI also created Dall-E , an AI text-to-art generator.

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT works through its Generative Pre-trained Transformer, which uses specialized algorithms to find patterns within data sequences. ChatGPT originally used the GPT-3 large language model, a neural network machine learning model and the third generation of Generative Pre-trained Transformer. The transformer pulls from a significant amount of data to formulate a response.

  • Which also includes:
  • 8 top generative AI tool categories for 2024
  • Will AI replace jobs? 9 job types that might be affected
  • 19 of the best large language models in 2024

ChatGPT now uses the GPT-3.5 model that includes a fine-tuning process for its algorithm. ChatGPT Plus uses GPT-4 , which offers a faster response time and internet plugins. GPT-4 can also handle more complex tasks compared with previous models, such as describing photos, generating captions for images and creating more detailed responses up to 25,000 words.

ChatGPT uses deep learning , a subset of machine learning, to produce humanlike text through transformer neural networks . The transformer predicts text -- including the next word, sentence or paragraph -- based on its training data's typical sequence.

Training begins with generic data, then moves to more tailored data for a specific task. ChatGPT was trained with online text to learn the human language, and then it used transcripts to learn the basics of conversations.

Human trainers provide conversations and rank the responses. These reward models help determine the best answers. To keep training the chatbot, users can upvote or downvote its response by clicking on thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons beside the answer. Users can also provide additional written feedback to improve and fine-tune future dialogue.

What kinds of questions can users ask ChatGPT?

Users can ask ChatGPT a variety of questions, including simple or more complex questions, such as, "What is the meaning of life?" or "What year did New York become a state?" ChatGPT is proficient with STEM disciplines and can debug or write code. There is no limitation to the types of questions to ask ChatGPT. However, ChatGPT uses data up to the year 2021, so it has no knowledge of events and data past that year. And since it is a conversational chatbot, users can ask for more information or ask it to try again when generating text.

How are people using ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is versatile and can be used for more than human conversations. People have used ChatGPT to do the following:

  • Code computer programs and check for bugs in code.
  • Compose music.
  • Draft emails.
  • Summarize articles, podcasts or presentations.
  • Script social media posts.
  • Create titles for articles.
  • Solve math problems.
  • Discover keywords for search engine optimization .
  • Create articles, blog posts and quizzes for websites.
  • Reword existing content for a different medium, such as a presentation transcript for a blog post.
  • Formulate product descriptions.
  • Play games.
  • Assist with job searches, including writing resumes and cover letters.
  • Ask trivia questions.
  • Describe complex topics more simply.
  • Write video scripts.
  • Research markets for products.
  • Generate art.

Unlike other chatbots, ChatGPT can remember various questions to continue the conversation in a more fluid manner.

Screenshot of ChatGPT responding to a question.

What are the benefits of ChatGPT?

Businesses and users are still exploring the benefits of ChatGPT as the program continues to evolve. Some benefits include the following:

  • Efficiency. AI-powered chatbots can handle routine and repetitive tasks, which can free up employees to focus on more complex and strategic responsibilities.
  • Cost savings. Using AI chatbots can be more cost-effective than hiring and training additional employees.
  • Improved content quality. Writers can use ChatGPT to improve grammatical or contextual errors or to help brainstorm ideas for content. Employees can take ordinary text and ask to improve its language or add expressions.
  • Education and training. ChatGPT can help provide explanations on more complex topics to help serve as a virtual tutor. Users can also ask for guides and any needed clarification on responses.
  • Better response time. ChatGPT provides instant responses, which reduces wait times for users seeking assistance.
  • Increased availability. AI models are available around the clock to provide continuous support and assistance.
  • Multilingual support. ChatGPT can communicate in multiple languages or provide translations for businesses with global audiences.
  • Personalization. AI chatbots can tailor responses to the user's preferences and behaviors based on previous interactions.
  • Scalability. ChatGPT can handle many users simultaneously, which is beneficial for applications with high user engagement.
  • Natural language understanding. ChatGPT understands and generates humanlike text, so it is useful for tasks such as generating content, answering questions, engaging in conversations and providing explanations.
  • Digital accessibility. ChatGPT and other AI chatbots can assist individuals with disabilities by providing text-based interactions, which can be easier to navigate than other interfaces.

What are the limitations of ChatGPT? How accurate is it?

Some limitations of ChatGPT include the following:

  • It does not fully understand the complexity of human language. ChatGPT is trained to generate words based on input. Because of this, responses might seem shallow and lack true insight.
  • Lack of knowledge for data and events after 2021. The training data ends with 2021 content. ChatGPT can provide incorrect information based on the data from which it pulls. If ChatGPT does not fully understand the query, it might also provide an inaccurate response. ChatGPT is still being trained, so feedback is recommended when an answer is incorrect.
  • Responses can sound like a machine and unnatural. Since ChatGPT predicts the next word, it can overuse words such as the or and . Because of this, people still need to review and edit content to make it flow more naturally, like human writing.
  • It summarizes but does not cite sources. ChatGPT does not provide analysis or insight into any data or statistics. ChatGPT might provide statistics but no real commentary on what these statistics mean or how they relate to the topic.
  • It cannot understand sarcasm and irony. ChatGPT is based on a data set of text.
  • It might focus on the wrong part of a question and not be able to shift. For example, if you ask ChatGPT, "Does a horse make a good pet based on its size?" and then ask it, "What about a cat?" ChatGPT might focus solely on the size of the animal versus giving information about having the animal as a pet. ChatGPT is not divergent and cannot shift its answer to cover multiple questions in a single response.

What are the ethical concerns associated with ChatGPT?

While ChatGPT can be helpful for some tasks, there are some ethical concerns that depend on how it is used, including bias , lack of privacy and security, and cheating in education and work.

Plagiarism and deceitful use

ChatGPT can be used unethically in ways such as cheating, impersonation or spreading misinformation due to its humanlike capabilities. Educators have brought up concerns about students using ChatGPT to cheat, plagiarize and write papers. CNET made the news when it used ChatGPT to create articles that were filled with errors.

To help prevent cheating and plagiarizing, OpenAI announced an AI text classifier to distinguish between human- and AI-generated text. However, after six months of availability, OpenAI pulled the tool due to a "low rate of accuracy."

There are online tools, such as Copyleaks or Writing.com, to classify how likely it is that text was written by a person versus being AI-generated. OpenAI plans to add a watermark to longer text pieces to help identify AI-generated content.

Because ChatGPT can write code, it also presents a problem for cybersecurity. Threat actors can use ChatGPT to help create malware. An update addressed the issue of creating malware by stopping the request, but threat actors might find ways around OpenAI's safety protocol.

ChatGPT can also be used to impersonate a person by training it to copy someone's writing and language style. The chatbot could then impersonate a trusted person to collect sensitive information or spread disinformation .

Bias in training data

One of the biggest ethical concerns with ChatGPT is its bias in training data . If the data the model pulls from has any bias, it is reflected in the model's output. ChatGPT also does not understand language that might be offensive or discriminatory. The data needs to be reviewed to avoid perpetuating bias, but including diverse and representative material can help control bias for accurate results.

Replacing jobs and human interaction

As technology advances, ChatGPT might automate certain tasks that are typically completed by humans, such as data entry and processing, customer service, and translation support. People are worried that it could replace their jobs, so it's important to consider ChatGPT and AI's effect on workers.

Rather than replacing workers, ChatGPT can be used as support for job functions and creating new job opportunities to avoid loss of employment. For example, lawyers can use ChatGPT to create summaries of case notes and draft contracts or agreements. And copywriters can use ChatGPT for article outlines and headline ideas.

Privacy issues

ChatGPT uses text based on input, so it could potentially reveal sensitive information. The model's output can also track and profile individuals by collecting information from a prompt and associating this information with the user's phone number and email. The information is then stored indefinitely.

How can you access ChatGPT?

To access ChatGPT, create an OpenAI account. Go to chat.openai.com and then select "Sign Up" and enter an email address, or use a Google or Microsoft account to log in.

After signing up, type a prompt or question in the message box on the ChatGPT homepage. Users can then do the following:

  • Enter a different prompt for a new query or ask for clarification.
  • Regenerate the response.
  • Share the response.
  • Like or dislike the response with the thumbs-up or thumbs-down option.

Even though ChatGPT can handle numerous users at a time, it reaches maximum capacity occasionally when there is an overload. This usually happens during peak hours, such as early in the morning or in the evening, depending on the time zone.

If it is at capacity, try using it at different times or hit refresh on the browser. Another option is to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, which is a subscription, but is typically always available, even during high-demand periods.

Is ChatGPT free?

ChatGPT is available for free through OpenAI's website. Users need to register for a free OpenAI account. There is also an option to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus for access to GPT-4, faster responses, no blackout windows and unlimited availability. ChatGPT Plus also gives priority access to new features for a subscription rate of $20 per month.

Without a subscription, there are limitations. The most notable limitation of the free version is access to ChatGPT when the program is at capacity. The Plus membership gives unlimited access to avoid capacity blackouts.

What are the alternatives to ChatGPT?

Because of ChatGPT's popularity, it is often unavailable due to capacity issues. Google announced Bard in response to ChatGPT . Google Bard will draw information directly from the internet through a Google search to provide the latest information.

Microsoft added ChatGPT functionality to Bing, giving the internet search engine a chat mode for users. The ChatGPT functionality in Bing isn't as limited because its training is up to date and doesn't end with 2021 data and events.

There are other text generator alternatives to ChatGPT, including the following:

  • Article Forge.
  • DeepL Write.
  • Google Bard.
  • Magic Write.
  • Open Assistant.
  • Peppertype.
  • Perplexity AI.

Coding alternatives for ChatGPT include the following:

  • Amazon CodeWhisperer.
  • CodeStarter.
  • Ghostwriter.
  • GitHub Copilot.
  • Mutable.ai.
  • OpenAI Codex.

ChatGPT updates

In August 2023, OpenAI  announced  an enterprise version of ChatGPT. The enterprise version offers the higher-speed GPT-4 model with a longer context window , customization options and data analysis. This model of ChatGPT does not share data outside the organization.

In September 2023, OpenAI announced a new update that allows ChatGPT to speak and recognize images. Users can upload pictures of what they have in their refrigerator and ChatGPT will provide ideas for dinner. Users can engage to get step-by-step recipes with ingredients they already have. People can also use ChatGPT to ask questions about photos -- such as landmarks -- and engage in conversation to learn facts and history.

Users can also use voice to engage with ChatGPT and speak to it like other voice assistants . People can have conversations to request stories, ask trivia questions or request jokes among other options.

The voice update will be available on apps for both iOS and Android. Users will just need to opt-in to use it in their settings. Images will be available on all platforms -- including apps and ChatGPT’s website.

In November 2023, OpenAI announced the rollout of GPTs, which let users customize their own version of ChatGPT for a specific use case. For example, a user could create a GPT that only scripts social media posts, checks for bugs in code, or formulates product descriptions. The user can input instructions and knowledge files in the GPT builder to give the custom GPT context. OpenAI also announced the GPT store, which will let users share and monetize their custom bots.

In December 2023, OpenAI partnered with Axel Springer to train its AI models on news reporting. ChatGPT users will see summaries of news stories from Bild and Welt, Business Insider and Politico as part of this deal. This agreement gives ChatGPT more current information in its chatbot answers and gives users another way to access news stories. OpenAI also announced an agreement with the Associated Press to use the news reporting archive for chatbot responses.
