Learn Korean with BTS – Here’s How to Do It

Did you know that you can learn Korean with BTS? That’s right! The boys from Big Hit Entertainment can help with learning Korean!

Who knew that studying the songs of a boyband with over 100 million global fans can help you in learning the Korean language ?

If you’re interested to study the Korean Language with BTS, read on!

6 men standing wearing colorful clothes

Who is BTS?

BTS is a seven-member boy pop group from South Korea. They are also called “Bangtan Boys”, and are under the entertainment company Big Hit Entertainment (Do you know how to say BTS in Korean? Check out this video ). They’ve taken Korea and the whole world by storm!

What does it mean to learn Korean with BTS?

You can use BTS lyrics, songs, and content to help you with studying the language. Within the songs, you can know useful vocabulary , slang , and expressions. Then when you sing along to the songs, you can speak and listen to the words you’ve learned.

You can look out for playlists like “BTS study music” or “BTS workout music” to help you with learning the language.

As you understand what the music means, you’ll start to uncover the subtle meanings built into the language. It’s different than just learning the romanized English version of the song. Additionally, you can actually learn a thing or two about the culture at the same time!

Can you become proficient in Korean by listening to K-Pop?

Yes, it will definitely help with proficiency. However, you will still want to study the underlying grammar and words. That will allow you to understand the meaning of the lyrics, as well as be able to create your own sentences .

We have a structured online course that will teach you all of the fundamentals that you need.

How can K-Pop help me learn Korean?

There are many ways that listening to K-Pop can help you study Korean.

The lyrics of the songs use a mix of everyday conversational language and artistic language. These can help you understand words or phrases. You can listen to the lyrics and understand the meaning behind them.

K-Pop artists also have live broadcast channels such as V Live. During these broadcasts, some kind-hearted fans translate what the artists say into English for the other fans who don’t understand. Sometimes the artists even do the translating themselves, if you ask nicely!

They also have a variety of programs such as Run BTS, where you can get exposed to their dialogues or conversations.

Can BTS help me in learning Korean?

You might be asking yourself: Can BTS really teach you Korean ? Yes! We know a few tips for what type of learning you can do with the Kings of Big Hit Entertainment. We hope you are ready for it because we’ll introduce them to you below.

However, simply knowing you could study a foreign language with BTS may not be enough of a reason to utilize them as a learning tool. So, on top of some of the ways you can learn with BTS, here are some reasons why it’s totally awesome to learn Korean with BTS !

7 men wearing black tuxedo

#1. You can follow along with their catchy songs

Give a few of their songs a listen, and you’ll know just what we mean. Whether the songs will become your personal favorites or not, they will get stuck in your head. Their fans know what we’re talking about!

Not only will you find their catchiness a great motivation to keep studying, but you’ll also end up learning through them whenever you find yourself singing along to the tune. AZLyrics is a great resource for finding BTS’ song lyrics in romanized, hangeul, and translated versions.

#2. You can have brief lessons throughout the day

Because each song is only a few minutes long, you don’t have to spend an hour on each one. In many cases, you’ll only need three minutes!

So if you’re pressed for time at the moment, put on a catchy song by BTS and really listen to the lyrics. You might even try singing along. It might not happen immediately, but each of those three minutes of pronunciation practice will add up. Soon you’ll be surprised by how much of the lyrics you can actually understand!

#3. Singing along improves your pronunciation

When studying Korean, practice is key. And is there anything more fun than practicing your pronunciation by singing along to your favorite songs? We don’t think so!

If you’re having a hard time understanding the lyrics, try just learning a few words at a time . Do the same with the grammar and phrases , and step-by-step the meaning will become clear !

#4. The songs’ repetitiveness makes memorization easier

Once you get started with singing along with BTS, you’ll want to listen to the songs over and over again, which will enhance your listening, memorization, and even pronunciation skills.

Because the vocabulary in the songs isn’t your typical everyday basic conversation, you’ll also try to learn them with more excitement so that you can understand properly what your biases are singing about. In little time you’ll find yourself singing the songs from memory, even when it’s not playing in the background!

#5. Beyond songs, there’s so much content with BTS in them to explore through

Any song from this awesome group would eventually be a big hit. But beyond the songs, they have so much content to help you learn.

You can also follow them on their social media accounts and focus on reading their photos’ captions. You can even connect and socialize with the millions of BTS fans who are also trying to study the language. Youtube videos of their interviews are a big hit among fans, with hours of content, garnering millions of likes from fans. Ask any of their global fans (called the BTS Army), they’ll tell you that they’re so much more than just the music.

#6. You can learn slang that isn’t taught in textbooks

It’s fun to pick up slang in songs, and the BTS lyrics are a great way to study them! The more modern slang you know , the more you’ll be able to understand K-Dramas and Korean movies, too.

#7. It can aid in understanding K-Pop culture and culture in general

BTS is a big name in K-Pop as well and can be likened to as one of Korea’s flagship music acts at the moment. Through them, you can not only open doors to more understanding and knowledge of K-Pop, but of Korean culture as a whole. And loving the culture behind the language is a great way to learn.

These are just a few examples of the reasons and ways that BTS can help you in learning Korean. You may even come up with new ways yourself!

If you want to learn what BTS lyrics mean, we have a step-by-step course inside of 90 Day Korean membership that will teach you the basics in only 3 months. Skip the guesswork plus get hand-picked content and full support from a native Korean speaker.

BTS on teaming with Ed Sheeran for their new single 'Permission to Dance': 'We just couldn't resist it'

"We worked really hard on this song, hoping that day we can dance freely together again will come as soon as possible."

Ruth is a correspondent who covers TV shows such as Younger, Jersey Shore and The Affair. She will write you a drinking game for any show you want and will remain loyal to Britney Spears no matter how many fashion shows she posts on Instagram.

BTS may have never met Ed Sheeran in person, but that doesn't mean they can't make magic together.

When the English crooner unveiled a demo of "Permission to Dance," a track he'd co-written with Snow Patrol singer Johnny McDaid and frequent collaborator Steve Mac, to the K-pop band, they knew immediately they wanted to record it.

"Ed sent us this amazingly good song, and as soon as we listened to it we just couldn't resist it," J-Hope tells EW over Zoom. "We thought it went really well with our image too, so we just went with it."

The septet looks forward to meeting Sheeran soon. What would they do if they finally got to hang out? "I'd tell him I'm a really big fan," says V. "I'd sing him our song!" adds J-Hope.

Jungkook is optimistic the project is just the beginning of their hit-making relationship. "I'm really thankful to Ed Sheeran," he says. "I hope we have more chances to work with him."

Though Sheeran sang the original version he sent to the group, BTS admit they hadn't thought about the possibility of him accompanying them on the single.

"I would listen to it every day if that happened!" says V.

Whether they'll continue to put out songs in English is yet to be seen, but the pop stars haven't ruled it out. "We're open to anything," says RM. "Maybe when it's time, I think we'll be able to release another song in English or Korean or Spanish — or any language."

With its upbeat tempo, undeniably celebratory vibe, and gently confrontational lyrics ("Ain't nothing that can stop how we move, yeah," "Cuz we don't need permission to dance!") — not to mention a shout-out to none other than Sir Elton John — the new single is an obvious contender for song of the summer, especially given the past year and a half so many of us have endured.

The fact that the track arrives as many listeners are emerging from lockdown isn't lost on the band. "We're going through some confusing times right now, but it is getting better, so we worked really hard on this song, hoping that day we can dance freely together will come as soon as possible," Jimin says.

As for the choreography in "Permission to Dance," the group insists it will be "really easy" to learn (we beg to differ, but sure). It also incorporates international sign language for the words fun, dance , and peace. Originally, the band used Korean sign language, but they switched to something that could be understood globally for added impact — "so that the whole world can dance to it together," says Suga. "I think that makes it all the more meaningful."

In the latter portion of the single's music video, BTS invite their crew and other members of their team — fans think they may have spotted their choreographer and bodyguards — to join them in the groove, driving home its core message: You can dance wherever, whenever, with whomever you choose.

"It was our first time having all the staff members who helped us make the music video dance in it together," says Jin. "We wanted to show that everyone can do it along [with us]."

If the moves, as they say, are easy, climbing the Billboard Hot 100 is another feat entirely. A year ago, the South Korean group hadn't reached the top of the U.S. chart. Now they're on their way to scoring a total of five singles that have peaked at No. 1, including their first English-language song, "Dynamite," which spent three weeks there last fall. "Savage Love" and "Life Goes On" followed, while "Butter " has held the top spot for seven weeks.

Considering seven is the band's lucky number, BTS was thrilled to learn of this achievement. "We were really excited and happy when we first heard the news," says V, enthusiastically holding up seven fingers. "It was really late at night, and we really want to say thank you to our fans."

As for what's next now that they have that enviable Billboard benchmark in the bag? "We just want to see the ARMY" — or, Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth, the name for their devoted followers —"as soon as possible!" says Jimin. "Please!"

Listen to "Permission to Dance" — and try to learn that choreo — above.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story said that Big Hit Entertainment chairman Bang Si-Hyuk and CEO Park Ji-Won were featured in the music video. That was incorrect and has since been updated

BTS ‘ RM is a big baby in the trippy video for his single “Come Back to Me.” The cinematic clip directed, produced and written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin that dropped on Friday morning (May 10) features a scene where the singer plays an adult-sized infant, one of several roles he takes on in the twisty, nearly seven-minute mini-movie.

BTS’ RM Announces Second Solo Album ‘Right Place, Wrong Person’

The single from RM’s upcoming 11-track second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person (May 24) was first performed last August during a surprise appearance at BTS bandmate Suga’s Seoul concert on his SUGA | Agust D Tour ‘D-DAY’ The Final outing. “Through ‘Come Back To Me,’ RM explores the central theme of the new album, ‘right and wrong,’ delving into the paradoxical desire to venture into new territories while longing to remain content in the present,” reads a statement announcing the video that co-stars actress Kim Minha ( Pachinko ), Emmy-nominated Beef star Joseph Lee and Kang Gilwoo ( The Glory ).

RM wrote the lyrics for the song, which also features guest musicians OHHYUK from South Korean band HYUKOH — who composed and arranged the track — as well as guitar and bass from Kuo of Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster and contributions from singer/songwriter JNKYRD and San yawn of Balming Tiger.

“The music video captures the uncanny yet familiar sensation of feeling like a stranger in different surroundings, echoing the theme of the upcoming album,” adds the statement of the clip that ends with a surprise twist.

RM’s first solo LP,  Indigo , was released in Dec. 2022, and peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200 and featured guests including Anderson .Paak, Erykah Badu and others. The members of BTS are all in the midst of completing their mandatory military services in South Korea, which RM enlisted in in December alongside band mates V, Jimin and Jung Kook.

Bts and unicef celebrate love myself campaign with renewed support for unicef’s #onmymind initiative, bts and bighit music continue their global advocacy with unicef to improve the mental health of children and youth.

BTS mark the groundbreaking success of the LOVE MYSELF

SEOUL, 22 April 2024 - Marking the sixth anniversary of the LOVE MYSELF campaign, UNICEF has renewed its collaboration with BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC to support UNICEF’s #OnMyMind initiative . The goal of #OnMyMind is to support the mental health of children, young people and families, and to advocate for the right of every child and young person to grow up in a safe and inclusive environment, protected from neglect, abuse, and poor mental health. In addition to actively advocating for increased awareness and support for mental health, this continued partnership contributes to UNICEF's child protection programmes, and expands access to services that protect all children from all forms of violence.

UNICEF’s partnership with BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC leverages popular culture to raise awareness and funds for critical issues concerning children's mental health. Since the establishment of their social contribution agreement in November 2017 - an agreement that was elevated to a global partnership in March 2020 - BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC have significantly bolstered the #ENDviolence initiative with UNICEF.

As of March 2024, BIGHIT MUSIC, BTS, and its fan base worldwide have contributed more than 8.9 billion won (around US$6.6 million) through the LOVE MYSELF campaign, which includes the sale of LOVE MYSELF merchandise and album profits to UNICEF. This substantial contribution underscores the commitment of BTS and BIGHIT MUSIC to positively impact children and young people, particularly in the area of violence prevention.

“Over the past 7 years, BTS' LOVE MYSELF message has offered immense comfort and courage to children and youth around the globe. I earnestly call for increased interest and support from everyone for the mental health of children and youth through the #OnMyMind initiative”, said President of the Korean Committee for UNICEF, Jeong Kap Young.

In response to the increasing support for mental health issues among children and youth, and as part of the LOVE MYSELF campaign renewal, BTS, BIGHIT MUSIC and UNICEF introduced the launch of the 'Today's Heart Relay' event , which begins on 22 April 2024. This event offers participants the chance to express themselves through electronic postcards and includes a unique gift: a 3D stereoscopic memo pad featuring a serene representation of one's own mind, known as the 'Island of the Heart'. The event will encourage self-expression, while fostering a sense of community, reflecting the broader aim of the #OnMyMind initiative to create supportive environments for mental health.

X-Men ’97 is wrapping up its first season on May 15 — and the anticipation is building for a second season. Wondering if there will be an X-Men ’97 Season 2 on Disney Plus ? While the future looks bright for the Marvel animated series, there is still uncertainty surrounding who will helm the series moving forward.

X-Men ’97 is Disney+’s new animated series that debuted on Wednesday, March 20. The series revisits the beloved 1990s classic, The X-Men, a group of mutants harnessing their unique abilities to defend a world that hates and fears them. Now, they must confront a dangerous and unexpected path ahead. The new show picks up where the original X-Men: The Animated left off when it ended after five seasons in 1997.

Many of the voice actors from the original series reprised their roles in the Disney+ reboot, including Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), and Christopher Britton (Mister Sinister). Meanwhile, returning cast members Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Chris Potter (Gambit), Alyson Court (Jubilee), and Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler) voice new characters in X-Men ’97.

There are a total of 10 episodes in Season 1 of X-Men ’97, with the anticipated conclusion to the three-part finale, “Tolerance is Extinction,” airing on Wednesday, May 15. Episode 9 saw a shocking turn of events. After Wolverine appeared to fatally stab Magneto, the middle finale ended with an explosive cliffhanger: Magneto forcefully extracting the Adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton.

On May 10, X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo gave fans homework ahead of Season 1’s last episode. “Your final #xmen97 homework assignment: X-Men: The Animated Series - ‘The Final Decision’,” DeMayo wrote on X (formerly Twitter) . For context, the finale of the first season of 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series shows the X-Men and Magneto joining forces to fight Master Mold and the mutant-killing Sentinel.

Will There Be An X-Men '97, Season 2 On Disney+?

Yes, there will be an X-Men ’97 Season 2 on Disney Plus, and the next season is already in the works. The announcement was made at Marvel’s First Animation Panel in July 2022. The Newton brothers will be scoring the second installment of the series.

X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo was unexpectedly fired by Marvel just a few days before the show premiered on Disney+. Before his firing, the show’s creator had completed writing duties on season two and was even discussing loose ideas for a third season with his team members, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, acknowledged DeMayo’s “excellent work” on seasons 1 and 2 of X-Men ’97. However, the executive remained tight-lipped about the specific reasons for DeMayo’s firing. DeMayo's replacement for the upcoming seasons of X-Men '97 is still unknown.

When Will X-Men '97 Season 2 Be Released On Disney+?

Disney Plus has yet to release a premiere date for X-Men '97 Season 2. However, Winderbaum recently gave an update about Season 2's development.

"I've now seen versions of animatics for the entire second season. Obviously, when you're in that stage, there's a lot of work to do. It's editorial, but it's also still iterative because there's still story to be worked out when you put it on its feet in that way," he explained to Entertainment Weekly in March.

The executive added that they would be starting development on the third season of X-Men '97 "very soon." He continued, "And, yeah, we're trying to figure out who is going to be that voice on the page, but luckily — that's going to come as a surprise — there's many talented X-Men fans, excellent writers."

Stay tuned to learn about X-Men '97 Season 2’s plot and release date.

Sexual assault survivors will be harmed in closing of University of Iowa RVAP service

Combining sexual assault and domestic violence programs is a disservice to sexual assault survivors, to those who help them, and rape victim advocacy program’s neighbors..

At the same time the University of Iowa celebrates its women’s athletic programs , it is choosing to close one of the oldest rape crisis centers in the country. The University of Iowa has announced that it plans to close the Rape Victim Advocacy Program , RVAP, and says its services will be absorbed by the Domestic Violence Intervention Program . Established in 1973, RVAP has long been one of the strongest programs in Iowa.

The University of Iowa, a research institution, completely failed to do its homework before making this decision.

I was the executive director of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault , a coalition of all of Iowa’s rape crisis programs, for 32 years, until July of 2023. I and my colleagues participated in two important initiatives whose findings have long been publicly available. The Office on Violence Against Women funded a four-year national study because dual sexual assault/domestic violence programs seldom met the needs of sexual assault victims.

Findings, published in 2017, included that domestic violence programs focused on providing tangible support, such as housing, restraining orders and ongoing legal assistance, and were not suited to providing ongoing emotional support that sexual assault survivors need. Most programs lacked a clear organizational identity as a sexual assault program. Victims and outside referral agencies programs did not see dual agencies as those that provided sexual assault services.

In 2013, a statewide initiative of the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, decided to restructure services in Iowa and create separate sexual assault services. Sexual assault survivors needed more focused services. The creation of separate services became a national model. Between fiscal year 2014 and fiscal year 2019 there was a 275% increase in the number of sexual assault survivors served (from 4,431 to 16,621).

Since services were restructured in 2014, the Rape Victim Advocacy Program has been funded with both state and federal funds to provide services to eight counties. Discussion of the closure of RVAP has commented on those served who may not be University of Iowa students. A large research institution, such as the University of Iowa, has an obligation to share its considerable knowledge and ability to assist with its neighbors.

Combining sexual assault and domestic violence programs is a disservice to sexual assault survivors, those who help them, and RVAP’s neighbors. Women’s athletics are celebrated, while closing a program to assist many who are hurting is a mistake. Terrible call, University of Iowa.

Elizabeth Barnhill is former executive director of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
