A survey was conducted through questionnaire prepared by CBSE to collect feedback from parents, teachers, students and other educationists on “Alternatives to Homework at Upper Primary Level” for Class Sixth, Seventh and Eighth so that appropriate strategies and meaningful activities can be designed and suggested to schools. The questions were directed to know the ideal quantity and purpose of the homework, whether homework should be assigned in all the subjects, internet usage should be a part of the homework or not, how homework helps in teaching.

Keeping in view emerging issues, there is a need to think about giving quality homework emphasizing on acquiring applied learning skills. Few points can be kept in mind while designing a quality homework by teachers: 1, Provide students capacity building activities which are followed up and acknowledged like drawing, creative writing, making puzzles, stories, plays, online games, reading online books and craft.

2. Provide them assignment sheets which improve their reading & writing abilities. Homework must enable the student to practice a skill independently. 3. A possible discussion can be held with different children on what they would like to do at home to improve in which ever area they deem necessary. Homework must be designed in a way that maximizes the chances of its completion by the students.

4. Parents should be able to understand the child’s needs and schools suggestions on how to learn mathematics, logical reasoning, etc. by doing puzzles, writing letters, reading to elders from the newspapers, making household lists, recipe making and cooking. 5. Learners who have dyslexia or number difficulty should have practice assignments overcoming their problems.

The child in middle school have a keenness to discover more and prepare for the examination. Learning is about developing new faculties, which become useful as an adult. The years 12 to 15 are years when rules become important, and doing well, excelling are given importance both at home and in the class. As the child grows chronically his/her emotional maturity also grows and there are interests which are beyond just what lessons can give.

The homework assigned should: 1. enhance study habits and practice skills (which learners are able to perform independently) 2. reinforce necessary skills both scholastic and co-scholastic among the learners. 3. enable learners to become independent learners and thinkers and develop among them 21st century skills so that they can participate in Make in India in future. 4. lead to the improvement in the academic achievement of the learner.

5. expand on the existing knowledge of the learners and be a part of the already acquired competencies in the classroom. 6. not put unneeded pressure or stress by including new learning material or difficult material to be worked upon by learners themselves. 7. be CBSE Syllabus based and as per developmental needs of the learners. 8. not require specific resources or technology which is not accessible to all learners. 9. have clearly defined, purposeful, creative and engaging activities.

It is also advised that teachers can refer to Life Skills Manuals, Health Manuals and Environmental Education Manuals which contain age appropriate and interesting activities which can be taken up by the learners individually. These activities can be assigned to learners so as to enhance their life skills, values and make them health conscious.

Homework is needed, and necessary for a teacher to be able to follow up with each child. The correction and feedback on homework is an important input that helps both parents and children to follow up and improve in areas which are needed. The recourse extra classes, can be reduced if the homework is used for learning improvement and acquisition of diverse skills. हम सभी का जीवन संघर्षों से भरा होता है। सभी को अपने छात्र जीवन में और उसके संघर्षों के बारे में अवश्य पता होगा। सभी छात्र अपने स्कूल के दिनों में अच्छा मार्क लाने का उनपर बहुत अधिक दबाव होता है। सभी चाहते है की एग्जाम में उनके मार्क अच्छे आये, और इसके लिए वो कड़ी मेहनत भी करते है। सभी छात्रों के जीवन में होमवर्क बहुत ही आवश्यक होता है। रोजाना के स्कूल समाप्ति के बाद अध्यापकों के द्वारा हर बच्चे को होमवर्क दिया जाता है। कभी-कभी छुट्टियों के दिनों में भी छात्रों को होमवर्क दिया जाता हैं। कोई भी छात्र छुट्टी के समय में पढ़ाई नहीं करना चाहता है। हर छात्र को और उसके परिवार को होमवर्क की आवश्यकता क्या है और यह छात्रों के लिए कितना जरूरी और महत्वपूर्ण है यह जानना बहुत आवश्यक है।

होमवर्क क्या है ?

स्कूल के घंटों के बाद जो कार्य, प्रोजेक्ट या अभ्यास अध्यापकों द्वारा छात्रों को विषय के कुछ कार्य घर से करके लाने को कहां जाता है, उसे ही हम गृहकार्य या होमवर्ककहते है। यह कार्य स्कूल में उस विषय या पाठ्यक्रम के लिए मिलें कम समय छात्रों को अभ्यास करने के लिए दिया जाता है। इस कार्य में बच्चे अपने माता-पिता, बड़े या किसी और की सहायता ले सकते है। किसी भी छात्र को खुद के लिए यह सीखने का एक अच्छा तरीका है। इस कार्य को उसे अन्यथा नहीं लेना चाहिए, और हर किसी को खुद के भविष्य को ध्यान में रखकर इसमें रूचि और कार्य को कड़ी मेहनत से करना चाहिए।

होमवर्क की आवश्यकता क्यों है ?

निरंतर अभ्यास और कड़ी मेहनत ही सफलता की निशानी है। यही बात छात्रों पर भी लागू होती है। हर किसी छात्र को सफल होने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत और अभ्यास की जरुरत होती है। इसलिए उसे स्कूल के घंटों के समय के बाद भी घर पर निरंतर अभ्यास की आवश्यकता है। छात्र जो कुछ भी कक्षा में पढ़ता या सिखाता है उसका अभ्यास घर पर अवश्य करना चाहिए, ताकि वह विषय आपके दिमाग में बैठ जाए। इसलिए अध्यापक होमवर्क का कार्य छात्रों को देते है।

कक्षा में विद्यार्थी जो कुछ सिखता है तो वह कुछ समय के लिए उसके दिमाग में रहता है, यदि इसका अभ्यास वह घर पर कर ले तो वो चीज लम्बे समय के लिए दिमाग में बना रहता है। यदि वो अभ्यास न करे तो बाद में वो इसे भूल जाता है। उन सभी बातों और तथ्यों को अच्छे तरीके से याद रखने और परीक्षा में अच्छे अंक प्राप्त करने के लिए इसका अभ्यास करना बहुत ही आवश्यक है। कक्षा में पढ़ाये गए सभी विषयों को लम्बे समय तक याद रखने और उसका अभ्यास करने के लिए होमवर्क एक अच्छा तरीका है। इसलिए अध्यापक छात्रों को होमवर्क देते है। हर छात्र इस बात को समझे और होमवर्क को गंभीरता से उस विषय का अभ्यास करें।

होमवर्क अच्छा है या बुरा

छात्रों को हर दिन कुछ नया सीखने और सिखाई गई चीजों का अभ्यास करने के लिए अध्यपक के द्वारा होमवर्क का कार्य दिया जाता है, और अगले दिन इस कार्य को करके लाने को कहा जाता है। इस कार्य को करने के लिए छात्रों को कड़ी मेहनत और अभ्यास करना पड़ता है। छात्रों पर होमवर्क का कुछ सकारात्मक तो कुछ नकारात्म प्रभाव भी होता है, आइये इसके बारे में जानने की कोशिश करते है।

सकारात्मक प्रभाव :

जो भी पढ़ा उसकी पुनरावृत्ति और संशोधन

कक्षा में हमने जो भी पढ़ा होमवर्क के द्वारा हम उसकी पुनरावृत्ति कर सकते हैं। कक्षा में ऐसा हो सकता है कि जो कुछ भी हमने पढ़ा उसे कम समय के कारण अच्छे से समझ नहीं पाएं। लेकिन हम होमवर्क से उस विषय को संशोधन कर अच्छे से समझ सकते है। इससे हमारा अभ्यास और मन की शंका दोनों दूर हो जाती है, और इस पुनरावृत्ति से हम उस तथ्य के मतलब को लम्बे समय तक के लिए याद रख सकते है।

परीक्षा के लिए अभ्यास

रोजाना के होमवर्क से हमने जो भी कक्षा में पढ़ा, उसका अभ्यास हो जाता है, और हम उसके मतलब को भी आसानी से समझ सकते है। यदि हमें किसी भी चीज को समझनें में कोई समस्या होती है, तो जब हम होमवर्क करते है तो हमें कक्षा में बताई गई सारी बातें याद आ जाती है। जिसे हम होमवर्क के द्वारा याद करके उसे समझकर उसका अध्ययन कर उसे दिमाग में बिठा लेते है। इसके कारण परीक्षा के दौरान हमें पढ़ाई के दबाव से हमें थोड़ी राहत मिलती है, और फलस्वरूप हमारे अंदर परीक्षा का डर काफी काम हो जाता है। होमवर्क करने के दौरान हम अपने सारे उलझन और आने वाली समस्या को अभ्यास करके सुलझा लेते हैं। इससे परीक्षा में हमें अच्छे अंक लाने में भी मदद मिलती हैं।

समझने की क्षमता बढ़ता है

होमवर्क के द्वारा हमें रोजाना पढ़ाई और बताई गई सारी बातों से एक या अधिक बार गुजरना पड़ता है। होमवर्क के कार्य में लिखना और पढ़ना दोनों प्रकार के कार्य आते है, जिससे हमें लिखने और पढ़ने के तरीकों से हमारा अभ्यास होता है और उससे हमारी समझने की क्षमता भी बढ़ती हैं।

कक्षा में हमारे अध्यापक बच्चों को उसके सवालों, जबाबों कार्यों और उनके नए प्रोजेक्ट के तरीकों से उनके मूल्यांकन करने में मदद मिलती है। होमवर्क छात्र के सभी उलझनों को खत्म करके उस विषय के बारे में अलग तरीके से सोचने, समझने, और उसको अपने ढंग से नया रूप देने की कोशिश करते हैं। जिसके कारण उनके माता-पिता और अध्यापक को उनके मूल्यांकन और अंक तालिका में अच्छा करने का भरोसा भी दिलाती है।

समय का प्रबंधन करना सिखाती है

रोजाना और छुट्टी के दिनों में होमवर्क के द्वारा ही छात्र अपनी एकाग्रता को बढ़ाता है। अपने होमवर्क से वह अपनी सोच, याद करने की शक्ति, अपने कौशल को और बेहतर बनाने में मदद मिलती है। इसके कारण वह अपने कार्यों के प्रति काफी जिम्मेदार हो जाता है और सारे कार्य खुद से ही करने लगता है।

नकारात्मक प्रभाव :

अधिक होमवर्क का बोझ

अत्यधिक होमवर्क किसी भी छात्र के लिए बोझ का काम करता है। इसके कारण छात्र का समग्र विकास में बांधा आती है। कोई भी छात्र रोजाना या अत्यधिक होमवर्क के कारण उसके अंदर तनाव और चिड़चिड़ापन आने लगता है, जो उसके स्वास्थ्य को बहुत प्रभावित करता है।

अन्य गतिविधियों के लिए समय नहीं मिलता

ज्यादा होमवर्क होने की वजह से छात्र को किसी अन्य गतिविधि में शामिल होने के लिए समय की कमी रहती है। वह इसके लिए पर्याप्त समय नहीं निकाल पाता है। जिस कारण उन्हें अन्य लोगों से मिलने और बात करने का मौका नहीं मिलता और वो अपने को एकदम तन्हा महसूस करने लगते है। यह बात आगे चलकर बहुत खतरनाक हो सकती है।

स्मार्ट तरीके से होमवर्क देना

आसान और अच्छा होमवर्क देना

छात्रों को आसान और रोचक होमवर्क देना चाहिए जिसे वो आनंद के साथ मजे से पूरा करें। ऐसा काम देना चाहिए जिससे उनके सोचने और नए तरीकों का इस्तेमाल हो और उन्हें अपने इस कार्य में आनंद और मजे भी मिले। उनको दिया गया होमवर्क कठिन और बहुत आसान भी नहीं होना चाहिए। उनका होमवर्क ऐसा होना चाहिए जिससे उनकी बुद्धिशक्ति, तरीकों और नई चीजें सीखने का उत्साह उनमें बना रहें।

दिनों के अंतराल पर होमवर्क देना चाहिए

रोजाना होमवर्क के कारण छात्रों में बोरियत, उदासी, चिड़चिड़ापन, थकान, इत्यादि देखने को मिलता है। इसलिए बच्चों को एक निश्चित अंतराल पर और रोचक होमवर्क देना चाहिए। जिसके कारण उनके ऊपर होमवर्क का कार्य का दबाव कम हो और उनका पूर्ण विकास हो।

क्या होमवर्क छात्रों लिए आवश्यक है ?

सभी माता-पिता, अध्यापक और छात्र यही चाहते है कि वो खुद से अपना अध्याय करें और इसके लिए होमवर्क बहुत जरुरी और महत्वपूर्ण है। छात्र जो कुछ भी कक्षा में सिखते है वो उनके लिए काफी नहीं होता, कहीं न कहीं उनके मन में कुछ शक और संकाएं बनी रहती है। उन्हें इन चीजों का मतलब साफ नहीं मिलता है। इस सब संकाओं को दूर करने और अपने बुद्धि और अपने अंदर की शक्ति को पहचानने के लिए स्व-अध्याय बहुत ही आवश्यक है।

प्रारम्भ में होमवर्क थोड़ा उदास और व्यर्थ लगेगा। हमें होमवर्क के मूल्यों को समझना चाहिए, और हमें स्वावलम्बी बनना चाहिए। इसके द्वारा हमें आपस में एक दूसरे से बातें करने और अपने सवालों के जवाब के लिए अपने गुरु, माता-पिता, सहपाठियों या किसी अन्य से समस्या के हल के लिए बात करने की शक्ति जगाता है। मेरी राय में हर छात्र के लिए होमवर्क बहुत ही जरूरी और उपयोगी है। यह उनके सोचने और कुछ नया करने की क्षमता को बढ़ता है।

थोड़े नुकसान के साथ होमवर्क के अपने बहुत ही फायदे है। इससे छात्र समय का उपयोग, अपनी सोचने की क्षमता, कार्यशक्ति और जीवन में नए कार्य सोच को उत्पन्न करता है। थोड़े कम और रोचक होमवर्क के साथ यह सभी छात्रों के जीवन के लिए बहुत ही आवश्यक है।

Poland’s children rejoice as homework is banned. The rest of the world watches on for results

O la Kozak is celebrating. The 11-year-old, who loves music and drawing, expects to have more free time for her hobbies after Poland ’s government ordered strict limits on the amount of homework in the lower grades.

“I am happy,” said the fifth grader, who lives in a Warsaw suburb with her parents and younger siblings. The lilac-colored walls in her bedroom are covered in her art, and on her desk she keeps a framed picture she drew of Kurt Cobain.

“Most people in my class in the morning would copy the work off someone who had done the homework or would copy it from the internet. So it didn’t make sense,” she said.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk enacted the ban against required homework this month amid a broad discussion about the need to modernise Poland's education system, which critics say puts too much emphasis on rote learning and homework, and not enough on critical thinking and creativity.

Under the decree, teachers are no longer to give required homework to kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional and doesn't count towards a grade.

Not everyone likes the change – and even Ola’s parents are divided.

“If there is something that will make students enjoy school more, then it will probably be good both for the students and for the school,” said her father, Pawel Kozak.

His wife, Magda Kozak, was skeptical. “I am not pleased, because (homework) is a way to consolidate what was learned,” she said. “It helps stay on top of what the child has really learned and what’s going on at school.”

Debates over the proper amount of homework are common around the globe. While some studies have shown little benefit to homework for young learners, other experts say it can help them learn how to develop study habits and academic concepts.

The rest of the world will be watching Poland’s results closely.

Poland's educational system has undergone a number of controversial overhauls. Almost every new government has tried to make changes — something many teachers and parents say has left them confused and discouraged. For example, after communism was thrown off, middle schools were introduced. Then under the last government, the previous system was brought back. More controversy came in recent years when ultra-conservative views were pushed in new textbooks.

For years, teachers have been fleeing the system due to low wages and political pressure. The current government is trying to increase teacher salaries and has promised other changes that teachers approve of.

But Sławomir Broniarz, the head of the Polish Teachers' Union, said that while he recognized the need to ease burdens on students, the new homework rules are another case of change imposed from above without adequate consultation with educators.

“In general, the teachers think that this happened too quickly, too hastily,” he said.

He argued that removing homework could widen the educational gaps between kids who have strong support at home and those from poorer families with less support and lower expectations. Instead, he urged wider changes to the entire curriculum.

The homework rules gained impetus in the runup to parliamentary elections last year, when a 14-year-old boy, Maciek Matuszewski, stood up at a campaign rally and told Tusk before a national audience that children “had no time to rest.” The boy said their rights were being violated with so much homework on weekends and so many tests on Mondays.

Tusk has since featured Matuszewski in social media videos and made him the face of the sudden change.

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said she was prompted by research on children’s mental health. Of the various stresses children face, she said, "the one that could be removed fastest was the burden of homework.”

Pasi Sahlberg, a prominent Finnish educator and author, said the value of homework depends on what it is and how it is linked to overall learning. The need for homework can be “very individual and contextual.”

“We need to trust our teachers to decide what is good for each child,” Sahlberg said.

In South Korea, homework limits were set for elementary schools in 2017 amid concerns that kids were under too much pressure. However, teenagers in the education-obsessed country often cram long into the night and get tutoring to meet the requirements of demanding school and university admission tests.

In the US, teachers and parents decide for themselves how much homework to assign. Some elementary schools have done away with homework entirely to give children more time to play, participate in activities and spend time with families.

A guideline circulated by teachers unions in the US recommends about 10 minutes of homework per grade. So, 10 minutes in first grade, 20 minutes in second grade and so on.

The COVID-19 pandemic and a crisis around youth mental health have complicated debates around homework. In the US, extended school closures in some places were accompanied by steep losses in learning, which were often addressed with tutoring and other interventions paid for with federal pandemic relief money. At the same time, increased attention to student wellbeing led some teachers to consider alternate approaches including reduced or optional homework.

It's important for children to learn that mastering something "usually requires practice, a lot of practice,” said Sahlberg, in Finland. If reducing homework leads kids and parents to think school expectations for excellence will be lowered, “things will go wrong.”

We have a similar conversation every few weeks in this house.

It usually happens around the time an exam is approaching and a particularly disinteresting piece of revision needs to be done. It goes something like this: “What’s the point in even learning this stuff [algebra/trigonometry, etc]? We’re never going to use it in real life. Such a waste of time, blah, blah, blah.”

To which I, without hesitation, having lived a full and algebra-filled life, explain it will prove invaluable when trying to work out which packet of dishwasher tablets is the best value when you’re in the middle of the big shop and there’s just too much choice on offer.

So too will Pythagoras help you work out the best way to fit that awkwardly shaped bouncy castle thingy in your back garden when it’s Communion season. “These are life skills you don’t even know you need yet,” I explain. “But glad you will be,” I continue, nodding solemnly like the Jedi master I should have been.

Every time the question strikes like a dagger to my, quite patriotic, heart. “Eh, it’s part of your culture and your identity and it is essential our language is not lost,” I bark, in English. “Plus how else do you think your sister and I managed to have discussions in this house over the years with no one else understanding what we were on about? One day, you’ll want to be able to keep some of your kids in the dark too!”

(We, as in I, interrupt this column to clarify that although I am passionate about the importance of learning Irish, I do not believe that it should be a compulsory Leaving Cert subject, or a barrier in any way to accessing third-level education. And I certainly don’t believe we should be making things more difficult for children, who are already struggling, to access exemptions.)

Every day, as a parent, is a school day. And not just because they’ve a whole new way of doing primary school maths. If I could go back in time to when I started out, I would impart similar wisdom to my younger parent self. Only I hope I’d be more open to hearing it than my children are.

I’d tell myself that yes, you will have the opportunity to sleep again. Though you may not choose it. Revenge procrastination may become your life choice instead, because those pesky teenagers never go to bed, and thanks to this whole “having it all” lark, staying up until stupid o’clock, scrolling mindlessly or watching Ted Lasso is your “me time”.

This is now why you’re always tired.

I’d emphasise the absolute importance of always taking the lunchboxes and beakers out of their schoolbags at the beginning of any midterms, holidays or any extended periods of time out of school because otherwise the chances of you remembering to do it ahead of the night before they return to school is extremely slim, and what you discover at that point won’t be pretty.

I’d say to myself to ignore anyone who tries to tell you there’s no real difference between raising boys and girls. Yes, there is. Most of it revolves around their ability to pee in the actual toilet bowl. A fair bit revolves around the size of your food shop.

I’d explain to myself, that the hardest part to remember is that you’re not their friend, you’re their parent. And though both can feel possible when they’re small, you’ve a job to do and they need you to do it. And sometimes they might really dislike you for it.

But that’s okay, because you’re not their friend. You’re their parent.

I’d tell myself no, disappearing cutlery, plates and cups are not one of life’s great mysteries. You’ll find them all in your teenagers’ rooms.

I’d explain to myself that you’ll find those traits you recognise from yourself and see in your children as they grow, both endearing and infuriating at the same time. And when your own parents point out that something your child does reminds them of you as a child, it is neither a compliment nor an insult. It’s purely them enjoying karma.

And I’d tell myself: yes, your initial suspicions were right. You will grow to hate homework more as an adult than you ever did as a child. Only now it will be coupled with the frustration of knowing how pointless it is for primary school children in particular, and that it really, really needs to go.

After all, x – homework = not enough time for play.

And if play equals children’s work, then that equation is unsolvable. It’s just basic algebra.

Parents of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley both sentenced to 10-15 years for involuntary manslaughter

PONTIAC, Mich. — The first parents to ever be charged , then convicted, in their child’s mass shooting at a U.S. school were both sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison after they faced the victims' families at a sentencing hearing in a Michigan courtroom.

James Crumbley, 47, and his wife, Jennifer, 46, were sentenced one after another by Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Matthews as they appeared together for the first time since they attended joint hearings before their landmark trials were separated last fall. Their son, Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty as an adult to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit and was sentenced to life in prison.

Matthews' sentencing decision was in line with what Oakland County prosecutors had asked for after both parents were found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the students their son killed.

Matthews told the Crumbleys that the jury convictions were "not about poor parenting" but about how they repeatedly ignored warning signs that a "reasonable person" would have seen.

"These convictions confirm repeated acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train," she said.

The couple will get credit for time served in an Oakland County jail since their arrests in the wake of the shooting on Nov. 30, 2021. The pair sat apart at the defense table with their lawyers beside them as the families of the four students who were killed asked before sentencing for the maximum terms to be imposed.

"When you texted, 'Ethan don't do it,' I was texting, 'Madisyn I love you, please call mom,'" Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of shooting victim Madisyn Baldwin, 17, told the Crumbleys. "When you found out about the lives your son took that day, I was still waiting for my daughter in the parking lot.

"The lack of compassion you've shown is outright disgusting," she added through tears.

Jill Soave, the mother of another slain student, Justin Shilling, 17, said the parents' inaction on the day of the shooting "failed their son and failed us all."

Justin's father, Craig Shilling, said he was troubled by Jennifer Crumbley's testimony during her trial in which she said she would not have done anything differently, even today.

"The blood of our children is on your hands, too," Craig Shilling said.

James Crumbley wore an orange jumpsuit and headphones to help with his hearing, and Jennifer Crumbley wore a gray-and-white jumpsuit. He did not look at his wife, while she glanced in his direction.

In Michigan, prosecutors said, felonies that rise out of the same event must run concurrently, so the most Matthews could have imposed is 15 years in total. And while prosecutors wanted the parents to receive sentences that exceeded the advisory guideline range, Matthews had the ultimate discretion, weighing factors such as past criminal behavior and the circumstances of their crimes.

Before she was sentenced, Jennifer Crumbley told the court that she felt "deep remorse, regret and grief" about the shooting, but she also deflected some of the blame onto school officials and took offense to the prosecution's strategy portraying her as a neglectful mother .

"We were good parents," Crumbley said. "We were the average family. We weren't perfect, but we loved our son and each other tremendously."

James Crumbley also addressed the court, explaining to the judge that he did not know beforehand about his son's planned attack on his school and telling the victims' families directly that he would have acted differently on the day of the shooting.

"Please note that I am truly sorry for your loss as a result of what my son did," he said. "I cannot express how much I wish I had known what was going on with him or what was going to happen."

Matthews said during Tuesday's sentencing that the family would not be housed together and that the state Corrections Department has indicated James and Ethan Crumbley specifically will not be in the same facility given their relationship. Ethan is being held in a state prison 17 miles from Oxford High School. Jennifer Crumbley would be sent to the state's only women's prison.

James and Jennifer Crumbley have not been able to communicate as part of a no contact order since their arrests.

In both parents' cases, prosecutors wrote that their "gross negligence changed an entire community forever."

They both could have prevented the shooting with "tragically simple actions," prosecutors wrote, adding that they "failed to take any action when presented with the gravest of dangers."

Legal experts had suggested James Crumbley could have faced a harsher sentence than his wife after prosecutors said he made threats in jail.

During his trial, Matthews restricted his communication to only his lawyer and clergy.

The sentencing memo for James Crumbley referred to allegations that he made threats against the prosecutor and said that "his jail calls show a total lack of remorse" and that "he blames everyone but himself."

The memo details the expletive-ridden threats he is alleged to have directly addressed to the prosecutor on multiple recorded jail calls. In one call before the trial, he said, "Karen McDonald, you're going down," according to prosecutors. In other calls, he threatened retribution, they said.

James Crumbley’s lawyer, Mariell Lehman, wrote in court documents that the calls did not include threats to physically harm the prosecutor but that he expressed his desire to ensure that McDonald is not able to continue practicing law as a result of her actions in the case.

"It is clear Mr. Crumbley is venting to loved ones about his frustrations related to the lack of investigation done by the prosecution prior to authorizing charges," Lehman wrote, saying her client is understandably angry at his situation.

The prosecution's memo also says James Crumbley asserted his innocence in a pre-sentence report, indicating a lack of remorse.

"I feel horrible for what happened and would do anything to be able to go back in time and change it! But I can't. And I had nothing to do with what happened," he wrote, according to the prosecution memo. "I don't know why my son did what he did. HE is the only one who knows."

Lehman has not said whether she plans to appeal James Crumbley's verdict, while a lawyer for Jennifer Crumbley, Shannon Smith, has written that she will.

Two separate trials

James Crumbley did not take the stand during his trial. His wife testified that she placed the responsibility of securing the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun used in the shooting on her husband.

Asked whether she would have done anything differently, Jennifer Crumbley told jurors, "I don't think I'm a failure as a parent."

Prosecutors argued that she knew of her son's deteriorating mental health and social isolation and that he had access to a gun but that she cared more about her hobbies and carrying on an extramarital affair than about being present at home.

Her defense lawyer attempted to portray her as a caring mother, albeit one who did not know her son was capable of such violence — suggesting instead that his school failed to fully inform her of his troubles and that her husband was responsible for the weapon.

Smith continued to defend her client in her sentencing memo.

"Criticizing Mrs. Crumbley for being 'rarely home' is a sexist and misogynistic attack on a mother," Smith wrote.

In a pre-sentence report, Jennifer Crumbley said she has the hindsight now to know she would have handled things differently.

"With the information I have now, of course my answer would be hugely different," she said. "There are so many things that I would change if I could go back in time."

Both her and her husband's trials centered on the day of the shooting.

A day after Thanksgiving, prosecutors said, James Crumbley bought their son the handgun, while Jennifer Crumbley took him to a gun range that weekend.

On Tuesday, a teacher said she had found a note on Ethan's desk with a drawing of a gun and a person who had been shot, along with messages including: "The thoughts won't stop. Help me."

That discovery prompted the school to summon the parents for a meeting, but school officials testified that they declined to bring him home because they had to go back to work.

The officials also said that if the parents had informed them that their son had access to a gun, they would have been more authoritative to ensure immediate safety.

Ethan would go on to commit the school shooting later that afternoon, killing Baldwin; Shilling; Tate Myre, 16; and Hana St. Juliana, 14.

Victims' families want accountability

In the aftermath of the trials, the victims' families have demanded further accountability. They are seeking changes to governmental immunity laws that protect schools from being sued and want to see a requirement for independent reviews after any mass shooting.

Oakland County prosecutors have said they do not plan to charge anyone else in connection with the massacre.

Buck Myre, the father of Tate Myre, said during Tuesday's sentencing that families still want a government-led investigation.

"It's time to drive real change from this tragedy," he told the judge.

Later, James Crumbley stood and addressed Buck Myre directly when he was given the chance to speak.

"It is time that we all know the truth," he said. "I, too, want the truth, because you have not had it."

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Ola Kozak is celebrating. The 11-year-old, who loves music and drawing, expects to have more free time for her hobbies after Poland’s government ordered strict limits on the amount of homework in the lower grades.

“Most people in my class in the morning would copy the work off someone who had done the homework or would copy it from the internet. So it didn’t make sense,” she said.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk enacted the ban against required homework this month amid a broad discussion about the need to modernize Poland’s education system, which critics say puts too much emphasis on rote learning and homework, and not enough on critical thinking and creativity.

Under the decree, teachers are no longer to give required homework to kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional and doesn’t count towards a grade.

Not everyone likes the change – and even Ola’s parents are divided.

“If there is something that will make students enjoy school more, then it will probably be good both for the students and for the school,” said her father, Pawel Kozak.

Poland’s educational system has undergone a number of controversial overhauls. Almost every new government has tried to make changes — something many teachers and parents say has left them confused and discouraged. For example, after communism was thrown off, middle schools were introduced. Then under the last government, the previous system was brought back. More controversy came in recent years when ultra-conservative views were pushed in new textbooks.

But Sławomir Broniarz, the head of the Polish Teachers’ Union, said that while he recognized the need to ease burdens on students, the new homework rules are another case of change imposed from above without adequate consultation with educators.

“In general, the teachers think that this happened too quickly, too hastily,” he said.

Tusk has since featured Matuszewski in social media videos and made him the face of the sudden change.

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said she was prompted by research on children’s mental health. Of the various stresses children face, she said, “the one that could be removed fastest was the burden of homework.”

“We need to trust our teachers to decide what is good for each child,” Sahlberg said.

In the U.S., teachers and parents decide for themselves how much homework to assign. Some elementary schools have done away with homework entirely to give children more time to play, participate in activities and spend time with families.

A guideline circulated by teachers unions in the U.S. recommends about 10 minutes of homework per grade. So, 10 minutes in first grade, 20 minutes in second grade and so on.

The COVID-19 pandemic and a crisis around youth mental health have complicated debates around homework. In the U.S., extended school closures in some places were accompanied by steep losses in learning , which were often addressed with tutoring and other interventions paid for with federal pandemic relief money. At the same time, increased attention to student wellbeing led some teachers to consider alternate approaches including reduced or optional homework.

It’s important for children to learn that mastering something “usually requires practice, a lot of practice,” said Sahlberg, in Finland. If reducing homework leads kids and parents to think school expectations for excellence will be lowered, “things will go wrong.”

Westfield Public Schools held a regular board meeting in late March at the local high school, a red brick complex in Westfield, N.J., with a scoreboard outside proudly welcoming visitors to the “Home of the Blue Devils” sports teams.

But it was not business as usual for Dorota Mani.

In October, some 10th-grade girls at Westfield High School — including Ms. Mani’s 14-year-old daughter, Francesca — alerted administrators that boys in their class had used artificial intelligence software to fabricate sexually explicit images of them and were circulating the faked pictures. Five months later, the Manis and other families say, the district has done little to publicly address the doctored images or update school policies to hinder exploitative A.I. use.

“It seems as though the Westfield High School administration and the district are engaging in a master class of making this incident vanish into thin air,” Ms. Mani, the founder of a local preschool, admonished board members during the meeting.

In a statement, the school district said it had opened an “immediate investigation” upon learning about the incident, had immediately notified and consulted with the police, and had provided group counseling to the sophomore class.

“All school districts are grappling with the challenges and impact of artificial intelligence and other technology available to students at any time and anywhere,” Raymond González, the superintendent of Westfield Public Schools, said in the statement.

Blindsided last year by the sudden popularity of A.I.-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, schools across the United States scurried to contain the text-generating bots in an effort to forestall student cheating. Now a more alarming A.I. image-generating phenomenon is shaking schools.

Boys in several states have used widely available “nudification” apps to pervert real, identifiable photos of their clothed female classmates, shown attending events like school proms, into graphic, convincing-looking images of the girls with exposed A.I.-generated breasts and genitalia. In some cases, boys shared the faked images in the school lunchroom, on the school bus or through group chats on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, according to school and police reports.

Such digitally altered images — known as “deepfakes” or “deepnudes” — can have devastating consequences. Child sexual exploitation experts say the use of nonconsensual, A.I.-generated images to harass, humiliate and bully young women can harm their mental health, reputations and physical safety as well as pose risks to their college and career prospects. Last month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned that it is illegal to distribute computer-generated child sexual abuse material, including realistic-looking A.I.-generated images of identifiable minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Yet the student use of exploitative A.I. apps in schools is so new that some districts seem less prepared to address it than others. That can make safeguards precarious for students.

“This phenomenon has come on very suddenly and may be catching a lot of school districts unprepared and unsure what to do,” said Riana Pfefferkorn , a research scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory, who writes about legal issues related to computer-generated child sexual abuse imagery .

At Issaquah High School near Seattle last fall, a police detective investigating complaints from parents about explicit A.I.-generated images of their 14- and 15-year-old daughters asked an assistant principal why the school had not reported the incident to the police, according to a report from the Issaquah Police Department. The school official then asked “what was she supposed to report,” the police document said, prompting the detective to inform her that schools are required by law to report sexual abuse, including possible child sexual abuse material. The school subsequently reported the incident to Child Protective Services, the police report said. (The New York Times obtained the police report through a public-records request.)

In a statement, the Issaquah School District said it had talked with students, families and the police as part of its investigation into the deepfakes. The district also “ shared our empathy ,” the statement said, and provided support to students who were affected.

The statement added that the district had reported the “fake, artificial-intelligence-generated images to Child Protective Services out of an abundance of caution,” noting that “per our legal team, we are not required to report fake images to the police.”

At Beverly Vista Middle School in Beverly Hills, Calif., administrators contacted the police in February after learning that five boys had created and shared A.I.-generated explicit images of female classmates. Two weeks later, the school board approved the expulsion of five students, according to district documents . (The district said California’s education code prohibited it from confirming whether the expelled students were the students who had manufactured the images.)

Michael Bregy, superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District, said he and other school leaders wanted to set a national precedent that schools must not permit pupils to create and circulate sexually explicit images of their peers.

“That’s extreme bullying when it comes to schools,” Dr. Bregy said, noting that the explicit images were “disturbing and violative” to girls and their families. “It’s something we will absolutely not tolerate here.”

Schools in the small, affluent communities of Beverly Hills and Westfield were among the first to publicly acknowledge deepfake incidents. The details of the cases — described in district communications with parents, school board meetings, legislative hearings and court filings — illustrate the variability of school responses.

The Westfield incident began last summer when a male high school student asked to friend a 15-year-old female classmate on Instagram who had a private account, according to a lawsuit against the boy and his parents brought by the young woman and her family. (The Manis said they are not involved with the lawsuit.)

After she accepted the request, the male student copied photos of her and several other female schoolmates from their social media accounts, court documents say. Then he used an A.I. app to fabricate sexually explicit, “fully identifiable” images of the girls and shared them with schoolmates via a Snapchat group, court documents say.

Westfield High began to investigate in late October. While administrators quietly took some boys aside to question them, Francesca Mani said, they called her and other 10th-grade girls who had been subjected to the deepfakes to the school office by announcing their names over the school intercom.

That week, Mary Asfendis, the principal of Westfield High, sent an email to parents alerting them to “a situation that resulted in widespread misinformation.” The email went on to describe the deepfakes as a “very serious incident.” It also said that, despite student concern about possible image-sharing, the school believed that “any created images have been deleted and are not being circulated.”

Dorota Mani said Westfield administrators had told her that the district suspended the male student accused of fabricating the images for one or two days.

Soon after, she and her daughter began publicly speaking out about the incident, urging school districts, state lawmakers and Congress to enact laws and policies specifically prohibiting explicit deepfakes.

“We have to start updating our school policy,” Francesca Mani, now 15, said in a recent interview. “Because if the school had A.I. policies, then students like me would have been protected.”

Parents including Dorota Mani also lodged harassment complaints with Westfield High last fall over the explicit images. During the March meeting, however, Ms. Mani told school board members that the high school had yet to provide parents with an official report on the incident.

Westfield Public Schools said it could not comment on any disciplinary actions for reasons of student confidentiality. In a statement, Dr. González, the superintendent, said the district was strengthening its efforts “by educating our students and establishing clear guidelines to ensure that these new technologies are used responsibly.”

Beverly Hills schools have taken a stauncher public stance.

When administrators learned in February that eighth-grade boys at Beverly Vista Middle School had created explicit images of 12- and 13-year-old female classmates, they quickly sent a message — subject line: “Appalling Misuse of Artificial Intelligence” — to all district parents, staff, and middle and high school students. The message urged community members to share information with the school to help ensure that students’ “disturbing and inappropriate” use of A.I. “stops immediately.”

It also warned that the district was prepared to institute severe punishment. “Any student found to be creating, disseminating, or in possession of AI-generated images of this nature will face disciplinary actions,” including a recommendation for expulsion, the message said.

Dr. Bregy, the superintendent, said schools and lawmakers needed to act quickly because the abuse of A.I. was making students feel unsafe in schools.

“You hear a lot about physical safety in schools,” he said. “But what you’re not hearing about is this invasion of students’ personal, emotional safety.”

This week's question was crafted by Mariangela Bautista at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal, who was the previous Desert Dialogues winner : Picture yourself as your school district administrator, what policy would you change first within your school district and why?

As a school district administrator, the first policy I would change within my school district would be to prioritize the implementation of a thorough mental health policy. It is no surprise that mental health issues among students have increased at an alarming rate, with significant impacts on academic performance and overall wellbeing.

In 2020, the CDC estimated that one in six children in the United States, ages 2 to 8 years, had a mental, behavioral or developmental disorder. Knowing that it starts at a young age should inspire more adolescents than ever to seek help or, at least, be well informed in order to help a friend or someone they know. To address this, I would advocate for increased resources and funding for mental health services in schools, in addition to hiring more counselors, psychologists and social workers.

Moreover, since social media is one of the primary sources negatively impacting teens' mental health, I would ensure to limit the unnecessary use of phones as much as possible, given its integral role in teenagers' lives. Based on studies done by brightfuturesny.com, 32% of teens have reported being cyberbullied online, 40% report feeling anxious or depressed, 42% report feeling more insecure, and so on.

It doesn’t matter if the percentages are less than 50%, the fact is that there are teens out there who don’t receive the help they require. By prioritizing mental health policy within the school district, I would create a supportive environment that allows students to thrive academically and emotionally, which would ultimately lead to better outcomes for all.

As a school district administrator, the first policy I would prioritize is our stance toward extracurricular activities. Every student merits an opportunity to pursue their interests beyond the traditional classroom setting. A bustling school where every hallway echoes with creativity and enthusiasm. Extracurriculars will no longer be an afterthought — they'll be the heartbeat of our educational community.

To initiate this, I would expand our offerings to include a diverse array of activities, from robotics clubs to debate teams, gardening clubs to coding workshops. Every student should have the opportunity to find their niche and unleash their potential. But that is not all — I would ensure that access to extracurriculars is equitable for all. Financial or transportation barriers will not hold any student back. Scholarships, grants, and partnerships with local organizations will ensure that every child can participate, regardless of their background. Top-notch facilities, guest speakers and field trips will spark curiosity and passion. Whether it is a trip to a science museum or a hands-on workshop with industry professionals, our extracurriculars will spark a lifelong love for learning.

Most importantly, I would foster a culture where participation in extracurriculars is celebrated and valued. These activities won't just be a line on a college application, they'll be the fabric of our school community, fostering friendships, leadership skills and memories that last a lifetime. This new policy is going to take extracurriculars to a whole new level, providing an amazing school experience where every student can thrive, explore and reach new heights.

If I were a school district administrator, I would change the homework policy. Although it is important to do schoolwork at home, it can be stressful for most students. A lot of students, such as myself, have jobs and responsibilities outside of school. On top of that, homework and academics increases the stress in students' lives. It is true that if you do not work on something and keep learning everyday, you may forget, but I do not think students need packets of homework every day. If I were a school district administrator, I would make it so teachers can only assign up to three pages of homework and 20 questions per night.

As my school district administrator, I would first change the policy regarding safety on school campuses. For example, at schools across my school district, there are instances where school fights and violence arise, along with other concerns. In order to ensure proper safety for students, I would set up a more secure system with more security guards and possibly police officers who are ready to intervene when anything occurs. This way, schools across the district are sure to become not just more safe, but more welcoming to all of the students. As a student, I know I would appreciate more proper measures in order to make school everyday just as any other student would.

If I were a school district administrator, a policy I would first change within my school district is the variety of curriculum opportunities are offered. Around the world, students feel their schools do not provide the same opportunities as others do. As a district administrator, I would try to add more curriculum offerings to each school so everyone feels they have something to connect to — whether it be cooking classes, drivers ed classes, parenting classes, etc. Sometimes students do not know what they want to do after they graduate because of the lack of opportunities they have. With additional curriculum opportunities, students will feel they have a purpose or a career to pursue.
