A Grand Shopping Tradition Located in the heart of Moscow, facing the iconic Red Square and the Kremlin, GUM (Main Universal Store) is not only a shopper's paradise but also a landmark of Russian history and architecture.

Few department stores in the world boast such a prestigious address or such a rich heritage. GUM's connection to the social, political, and cultural development of Moscow makes it a remarkable institution, one that has witnessed tsars and communist leaders, revolutions and reforms, and the eventual rise of modern-day Russia.

GUM Department Store History

GUM's history dates back to the late 19th century. The site where GUM stands was historically a trading place, with the Upper Trading Rows being constructed between 1890 and 1893 by architect Alexander Pomerantsev.

This transformation marked a shift from a medieval marketplace to an emblem of Russia's growing commercial prowess, reflecting significant economic progress.

GUM was designed to house a variety of stores under one roof, a novel concept at the time, and it boasted stunning features such as its glass roof, which allowed for natural illumination of the grand interior.

Revolution and Soviet Era

Throughout its history, GUM has mirrored the tumultuous journey of Russia itself. After the 1917 Revolution, the store was nationalized and continued to function as a department store, but under various names and organizational structures.

During the Soviet era, it was known as the State Department Store, and it was both a symbol of state consumerism and, at times, a stark reminder of the shortage economy, with empty shelves and long queues.

Post-Soviet Revival and Modernization

With the fall of the Soviet Union, GUM experienced a renaissance. The department store was privatized in the 1990s and underwent extensive renovation to restore its historical facade and modernize its facilities.

Today, GUM operates as a luxury shopping mall and is a destination for both domestic and foreign visitors. Its three parallel arcades, linked by bridges, house a wide array of high-end boutiques, including international brands and exclusive Russian designers, complemented by restaurants and cafes that offer everything from fine dining to traditional Russian fare.

In many ways, GUM is more than just a department store. It functions as a cultural hub, playing host to various events, fashion shows, exhibitions, and festivals throughout the year.

Notably, during winter, the GUM ice rink becomes a magical focal point for the locals and tourists alike, contributing to the festive atmosphere around Red Square.

GUM Architecture

Architecturally, GUM is a spectacle of 19th-century engineering and design. Its elegant facade is an embodiment of the Russian architectural style known as "Russian revival," while the interior represents a pioneering use of metal and glass indicative of the same era.

Mysteries of GUM: Stalin's tears, secret Chanel suits and Gagarin’s pass

In almost 100 years of business, the iconic GUM department store on Moscow’s Red Square has seen it all, from brisk trade to hard times, from funerals to victory parades to fashion shows. Over time the shopping arcade has served as a residential building and has survived several threats of demolition. GUM was a mirror that reflected the life of the country – both the real and the longed-for.

The store’s history has now been documented in the two-volume Encyclopedia of GUM , recently published in Moscow. Art and architecture critic Grigory Revzin and his co-authors compiled an encyclopedia of Russian life as seen from the windows of the country's flagship store.

We chose four aspects of the store’s history from the encyclopedia that offer different perspectives both of the department store itself and the events of Russian history of the 20th century that are associated with it.

Department store – and living space

GUM – the State Universal Store (with the emphasis on “state”) – first opened its doors on the initiative of Lenin in 1921. In 1923, the renowned Constructivist artist Alexander Rodchenko designed the GUM logo, which has been used ever since, and launched a series of posters with the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. GUM was supposed to show abundance and plenty.

However, the building was also residential in those days, and people lived there on the third floor. Muscovite Eleonora Garkunova lived in GUM for the first 25 years of her life, in a room with windows facing onto Ilyinka Street. “In this sense, we were fortunate – except for us, only one family had windows overlooking the street; all the rest had rooms with windows overlooking the inside, under the glass roof,” she said.

Ten families were registered as living on Red Square, each living in identical conditions. There was no plumbing, and no gas, so people cooked on kerosene stoves right in the rooms. Residents had to use GUM's dirty public bathrooms for washing and their water supply.

“At the end of the 1930s, a paybathroom opened in the basement at the entrance to Ilyinka – it was clean, and there were even electric hand dryers, just a miracle. The entrance was 10 kopeks, but I was happy to have that possibility. When the woman attendant learned that I lived in GUM, she let me enter free,” said Garkunova. This was despite the fact that her father worked at the People's Commissariat for Finance.

At 8 a.m., when the stores opened, the entire of GUM would hear the sound of running feet – people who had been on duty since the night hurrying to join the queues in the different departments. Those who lived in the building learned to tell the time by this noise. The children of GUM residents were sometimes allowed to watch movies in the meeting room, the future Demonstration Hall, and they would go for walks in the Alexandrovsky Garden, alongside the Kremlin walls on the other side of Red Square.

“The accommodation in GUM did not surprise anyone,” said Garkunova. “No-one was particularly agitated by the proximity to the Kremlin; it all seemed natural.”

Only during the parades, several times a year, was it forbidden to bring in visitors, and a sentry was stationed in the room – to see to it that none of the adults came close to the windows.

State television and radio presenter Igor Kirillov recalls it, too. He covered the parades on Red Square from GUM, watching the armored vehicles roll past on the small screen. He badlywanted to look out of the window and see the parade, but if he took a step toward the window, he would be literally pushed away by the guard.

“Many years later, I ran into the man on the street,” said Kirillov.“He came to me and told me that during the parade snipers were always on duty and held Red Square at gunpointaround the entire perimeter. They had orders to shoot anyone who appeared in a window.”

Eleonora Garkunova lived in GUM until 1953. After Stalin's death, GUM stopped trading for a whileand the residents were resettled.

The place where Stalin cried in public

On the night of Nov. 8, 1932, Nadezhda Alliluyeva, Stalin's second wife and the mother of two of his children, shot herself in a government apartment in the Kremlin. She was 31. She shot himself in the heart, twice – the first shot was not fatal.

The coffin containing Alliluyeva’s body was placed for a farewell ceremony in GUM’s Demonstration Hall, which now holds fashion shows and presentations. On Nov. 10, the hall was opened to all who wished to say goodbye – and a steady stream of people poured into GUM.

There are newsreels of this civil ceremony, and it is clear that people were largely motivated by curiosity. It was an opportunity to see the top leadership of the country at close quarters. Lenin’s wife Nadezhda Krupskaya sat by the coffin, covered in flowers and wreaths. Stalin’s close political associates Vyacheslav Molotov, Grigol Ordzhonikidze, Lazar Kaganovich and Kliment Voroshilov stood around.

“And here is Stalin himself with his face swollen from crying, gazing piercingly at the dead face of his wife. Where else could you see this?” writes Grigory Revzin in Encyclopedia of GUM . This was almost the only time in his lifetime when Stalin was seen simply as a man experiencing personal grief.

Three escapes from the wrecking ball

It is hardly surprising that Stalin was ready to demolish GUM and erase the memory of that terrible November. He signed the relevant decree in 1934. By the early 1930s, trade in GUM had been almost abolished, and the store now resembled a huge office building for all kinds of institutions – from the Soviet Ministry of Culture to the Ministry of Coal Industry to the Union of the Red Cross.

The site of GUM was designated the future location of the ministry of ministries – the House of the People's Commissariat for Heavy Industry. The giant building was designed in the form of an Italian palazzo, yet on a massive Soviet scale. The four 160-meter towers were to be linked by passages at a height of 30 stories, for the ministers to go to each other’s meetings.

In the plans, the architects proposed to demolish the GUM building totally and convert Red Square into a huge avenue. On Moscow's 1935 Master Plan, there was no GUM: It was supposed to have been destroyed. “Moscow does not need GUM. Red Square, on which stands the mausoleum of Lenin, is too narrow. It should be expanded at the expense of GUM,” said the article that preceded the Master Plan.

What is surprising is not that Stalin wanted to bulldoze GUM, but that GUM was not demolished eventually – it was earmarked for destruction on no fewer than three occasions between the 1930s and the 1970s.

The first time it was Lavrenty Beria, head of the NKVD (Soviet security police) that saved it from immediate demolition – Beria’s office was located in the building and he refused to approveits demolition.

In 1947, GUM escaped once again after plans were announced to use the site to erect a monument to the victory in WWII, a bizarre giant rotunda with surrounding stands. Historians believe GUM was just lucky; Stalin had not yet had time to think about what the square dedicated to his victory should look like.

GUM was later to survive a final attempt to close it in 1972, when Second Secretary of the Communist Party Mikhail Suslov argued that “a market place should not be next to a mausoleum.”

On this occasion, the venerable old store was saved by a fur coat, which was being sewn in the GUM atelier for “Grand Duchess of the Soviet Union” Galina Brezhneva, daughter of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. When she arrived for a fitting, the masters complained that they were parting with customers for good – the atelier was closing. What the enraged Brezhneva told her father remains a mystery, but GUM survived.

Soviet showcase and deficit reserve

In 1953, after the death of Stalin, Trade Minister Anastas Mikoyan opened GUM following a complete renovation as a fundamentally new store.

The new GUM became a symbol of the Khrushchev Thaw, the presentation of a new course – from war to abundance. An article about the opening of GUM even appeared in Time magazine,with a portrait of Khrushchev on the cover.

“Every morning would begin with the announcement: "Workers of the store! In 5 minutes, our store opens. Take your working place and get ready for exemplary customer service,” writes GrigoryRevzin in Encyclopedia of GUM .

“This was followed by the Kremlin chimes, then the doors opened and the crowd would pour into the store, filling it in almost five minutes. And this was at 8 o'clock in the morning. Mikoyan was creating the “GUM factory” – and it worked, with customer figures exceeding a third of that of the population of the Soviet Union in a year.”

In 1936, Stalin sent Mikoyan to the U.S. for two months – to study the light industry and food sectors. According to Revzin, Mikoyan brought from the United States “not only production lines for frankfurters, sausages and cutlets (everything that would later become the Mikoyan Combine), not only the idea of fast food – he was seriously going to open the Soviet equivalent of McDonald's, but managed to implement only the Soviet ‘hamburger’ in the form of a ‘Mikoyan cutlet’ for seven kopeks – but also the idea that the lightindustry and food sectors are a big industry.”

It was Mikoyan who introduced the standard of the American department store with no shop assistant to Soviet trade. The country's main department store was seen as a platform for technical research.

But Mikoyan's favorite brainchild was GUM's fashion department. It had unusual tasks for the Soviet trade – to design clothes and to promote fashion. The shows were always packed.

In 1959, the fashion department reported that 500,000 and 600,000 people saw the GUM collection during its tours in the Soviet Union and abroad, respectively – at that time even the House of Dior could not boast of such figures.

But the numbers are not all. In June 1959, public shows bythe French haute couture house took GUM by storm. A photo session of Dior models for Life magazine was held in the arcades of the store.

The store became the place where Soviet women could hope to be a little bit like foreign beauties. It is here that the legendary 200th section, with special services for the party elite, emerged.

It was the place where in the era of shortages you could buy a Chanel suit – an almost unattainable dream for actresses, ballerinas, diplomats and television presenters. This section was a state secret. A special police post was stationed at the entrance from Red Square.

Politburo members and their wives were admitted without passes. The rest of the entourage could get in with a single-entry pass based on an application from the Central Committee. For example, Yuri Gagarin received a one-time pass to the 200th section after his flight into space.

The Metropolitan Police has been dragged - reluctantly, as I understand it - into investigating candidates a week out from the election. 

Even 24 hours ago this was not the case - Scotland Yard wanted to take care of their own - the officers probed by the Gambling Commission - and no more.

But as the days have dragged on, it's clear the issue has become more complex, and now gone beyond the scope of the Gambling Commission.

What has changed is a realisation by investigating authorities that they need to look into whether some candidates may have broken the law on misconduct in public office.

This is beyond the remit of the Gambling Commission, which began the initial probe, and now falls to the police.

This means the prospect of mainly Conservative candidates, including the prime minister's closest aide, potentially being interviewed under caution, maybe even this side of election day.

You could see how tetchy the subject made Rishi Sunak in the interview with the broadcast pool earlier today.

The next government is being urged to tackle an "appalling" rough sleeping crisis as new figures show a record high in London. 

A total of 11,993 people were seen rough sleeping in the capital in the year to March, according to the latest Combined Homelessness and Information Network (Chain) statistics.

That is the highest figure ever recorded on the database, and marks a 58% increase compared to 10 years ago.

The "appalling" increase reflects a "crisis, both in the capital and across the country", said Rick Henderson, chief executive of Homeless Link, the membership body for frontline homelessness services in England, which manages the Chain database.

He said the next government "must create a cross-government plan to prevent rough sleeping and homelessness through delivering genuinely affordable and secure homes quickly, whilst making sure there are a diverse range of properly-funded homelessness services to help people address the root causes of their destitution and move on from rough sleeping for good".

The St Mungo's homeless charity said the next government must "treat homelessness as an emergency and prioritise it in their first 100 days".

According to the latest available figures for England, published in February, the estimated number of people sleeping rough on a single night in autumn in 2023 was 3,898 - more than twice that of the figure in 2010.

Racist and homophobic remarks filmed as part of a Channel 4 investigation   during the Reform UK campaign were "inappropriate," chairman of the party Richard Tice has said. 

Speaking at a Reform UK event in Boston with party leader Nigel Farage, Mr Tice said: "We put a statement out and it's all self-explanatory in the statement.

"The reality is that we're a fast-growing movement, and when you've got unpaid volunteers, some people behave inappropriately. And they're gone."

In footage recorded by a Channel 4 undercover reporter, a Reform UK campaigner has been filmed saying migrants crossing the Channel should be used as "target practice".  He also used a racist slur against Rishi Sunak (see previous post).

Another Reform figure was filmed making homophobic remarks.

Mr Farage has described remarks in the footage as "very wrong".

In footage recorded by a Channel 4 undercover reporter , the same campaigner used a racial slur against Rishi Sunak. 

The clips were recorded in Clacton, where Reform leader Nigel Farage is a candidate. 

Responding to the footage, Mr Farage has said the comments were "very wrong".

"There was an activist that said some pretty unpleasant things," he said.

"Very very prejudiced, very wrong.

"He's somebody who turned up to help ... all political parties encourage volunteers."

He added that the campaigner in question would "not be welcome back" and that the two other figures featured in the footage would also no longer be working with the campaign. 

In the footage, the undercover reporter captured canvasser Andrew Parker talking about people coming ashore at Deal in Kent.

Mr Parker said: "Army recruitment - get the young recruits there, with guns, on the f****** beach, target practice. F****** just shoot them."

Mr Parker said in a statement, sent to Channel 4 News: "I would like to make it clear that neither Nigel Farage personally or the Reform Party are aware of my personal views on immigration."

He added: "I have never discussed immigration with either Nigel Farage or the Reform Party and that any comments made by me during those recordings are my own personal views on any subject I commented on. At no time before I was sent out to canvass did I discuss my personal views with any representative of the Reform Party UK or Nigel Farage."

Another Reform figure was filmed reacting to a Pride symbol on a passing police car.  

He says: "You see that f****** degenerate flag on the front bonnet? What are the old bill doing promoting that crap?"

Sky's  election commentator  Adam Boulton   says it has been "dreadful", adding Rishi Sunak "hasn't brought anything to this campaign". 

A series of missteps have dominated the headlines from the outset when Mr Sunak announced the election in the pouring rain.

But as the campaign enters its final week there may now be a moment of respite for the Conservatives, Adam says. 

"Almost the best thing about this campaign is the most irritating for a lot of people," Adam says.

"He's timed it to coincide with the Euros, with Wimbledon, with Glastonbury, which actually means the last week, it'll have to be a pretty big gaffe for anyone to notice."

The battle for Scottish votes is all to play for.

An exclusive YouGov poll for Sky News has Labour on 35% in Scotland and the SNP on 29%.

The latter are closing the gap, but if all goes this way on the night, such a result would mean big gains for Labour.

But the biggest gutter punch is dealt to the Conservatives who YouGov has on 11% and level with the Lib Dems.

But attitudes change when voters consider where to cast their ballot in the 2026 Holyrood elections.

As of the 18 June, voter intentions shifted to 28% for the SNP, 24% Labour, 10% Conservatives and 7% for the Lib Dems.

This tells us Scots treat UK and Scottish elections differently. 

It also suggests the former creating an opportunity for a protest vote - a cry of frustration at 14 years of Tory governments at Westminster, or the firing of a warning shot at the SNP’s record after 17 years at Holyrood.

But so many are still undecided.

1,059 people over 16 were surveyed by YouGov between the 20 and 25 June, exclusively for Sky News, and 14% of people surveyed have changed how they plan to vote over the past four weeks.

Of those, 37% say it was down to how the parties and their leaders have conducted themselves.

The NHS and health care are the key issues, followed by the cost of living next, the economy in general, immigration, and Scottish independence.

Rishi Sunak's most senior adviser in Downing Street has been interviewed in the investigation into bets by Conservatives on the date of the general election.

Liam Booth-Smith, Downing Street chief of staff, was interviewed last week by senior Gambling Commission officials and questioned about who knew about the timing of the election.

Sources have emphasised to Sky News that Mr Booth-Smith is not a suspect in the gambling investigation and was interviewed as a witness and was "asked for help".

Described as the prime minister's most trusted ally, Mr Booth-Smith has worked for Mr Sunak since he was chancellor, when his fondness for leather jackets earned him the nickname "the Treasury Travolta".

According to a Gambling Commission insider, Mr Booth-Smith was interviewed by "senior officials within the Gambling Commission, more senior than investigators".

Sky News has also been told there are currently no plans to interview the prime minister as part of the investigation into bets on the election date.
