MDE Office of Career and Technical Education Director Earns Lifetime Achievement Award

Other Michigan Educators, Business Officials Honored

LANSING – The director of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Office of Career and Technical Education earned lifetime achievement honors as others from Michigan also won awards at a recent regional conference.

Dr. Brian Pyles won the Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame Award at the Association for Career and Technical Education Region 1 Conference in New York City. Pyles, a Lansing resident, has been state director since 2018 and has worked in career and technical education for more than 30 years.

“Dr. Pyles and the other educators and businesses honored for their accomplishments help Michigan high school students attain the knowledge and skills they need to prepare for careers,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Career and technical education is a key part of Goal 4 of Michigan’s Strategic Top 10 Education Plan : to expand secondary learning opportunities for all students.”

Other regional winners from Michigan were:

  • Postsecondary Professional of the Year : Dr. Kenneth Flowers, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, Lake Michigan College.
  • Administrator of the Year : Lucas Schrauben, director of secondary programs, Holt High School.

  • Teacher of the Year : Jared Diephouse, power equipment instructor, Northwest Education Services Career Tech, Traverse City.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Amid allegations of a domestic assault involving a bat, a Staten Island Technical High School mathematics teacher has been reassigned, according to a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.

James Aurelia, 34, was arrested around 8:25 p.m. on April 29 for allegedly assaulting a 35-year-old man in the vicinity of Vanderbilt Avenue and Nunley Court in Stapleton, according to a spokesperson with the NYPD.

The incident was domestic in nature, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Aurelia struck the man “about the leg with an aluminum baseball bat,” resulting in redness and substantial pain, according to allegations in the criminal complaint.

The victim refused medical attention at the scene, according to the NYPD spokesperson.

Aurelia has been charged with assault in the second degree, assault in the third degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and harassment in the second degree.

His defense attorney could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.

Aurelia is due in Criminal Court in St. George on June 28.

Students learn how to be Certified Nursing Assistants through a free program at Suncoast Technical College

Three students in the tuition free Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) FastTrack program at...

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - CareerEdge, the workforce development program of the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, teamed up with Suncoast Technical College (STC) to offer a free CNA FastTrack program that launched in April.

The current course has eleven students working for six weeks. Five weeks spent in class and one week in clinicals.

After that, students can take the state test.

The students get to attend the class tuition free because of CareerEdge. The program’s mission is to combat the national nursing shortage that can be felt here locally.

With this program, students can join the workforce fast and efficiently, for free.

“Most students get offered positions before they even graduate, so some of them immediately after graduation start working or start their orientation within a week or two,” said Clemens Presogna, a health care instructor at Suncoast Technical College.
