The Internet is the decisive technology of the Information Age, and with the explosion of wireless communication in the early twenty-first century, we can say that humankind is now almost entirely connected, albeit with great levels of inequality in bandwidth, efficiency, and price.

People, companies, and institutions feel the depth of this technological change, but the speed and scope of the transformation has triggered all manner of utopian and dystopian perceptions that, when examined closely through methodologically rigorous empirical research, turn out not to be accurate. For instance, media often report that intense use of the Internet increases the risk of isolation, alienation, and withdrawal from society, but available evidence shows that the Internet neither isolates people nor reduces their sociability; it actually increases sociability, civic engagement, and the intensity of family and friendship relationships, in all cultures.

Our current “network society” is a product of the digital revolution and some major sociocultural changes. One of these is the rise of the “Me-centered society,” marked by an increased focus on individual growth and a decline in community understood in terms of space, work, family, and ascription in general. But individuation does not mean isolation, or the end of community. Instead, social relationships are being reconstructed on the basis of individual interests, values, and projects. Community is formed through individuals’ quests for like-minded people in a process that combines online interaction with offline interaction, cyberspace, and the local space.

Globally, time spent on social networking sites surpassed time spent on e-mail in November 2007, and the number of social networking users surpassed the number of e-mail users in July 2009. Today, social networking sites are the preferred platforms for all kinds of activities, both business and personal, and sociability has dramatically increased — but it is a different kind of sociability. By disintermediating government and corporate control of communication, horizontal communication networks have created a new landscape of social and political change.

Networked social movements have been particularly active since 2010, notably in the Arab revolutions against dictatorships and the protests against the management of the financial crisis. Online and particularly wireless communication has helped social movements pose more of a challenge to state power.

The Internet and the Web constitute the technological infrastructure of the global network society, and the understanding of their logic is a key field of research. It is only scholarly research that will enable us to cut through the myths surrounding this digital communication technology that is already a second skin for young people, yet continues to feed the fears and the fantasies of those who are still in charge of a society that they barely understand.

The Internet has turned our existence upside down. It has revolutionized communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday communication. In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Ordering a pizza, buying a television, sharing a moment with a friend, sending a picture over instant messaging. Before the Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to the minute.

The Internet itself has been transformed. In its early days—which from a historical perspective are still relatively recent—it was a static network designed to shuttle a small freight of bytes or a short message between two terminals; it was a repository of information where content was published and maintained only by expert coders. Today, however, immense quantities of information are uploaded and downloaded over this electronic leviathan, and the content is very much our own, for now we are all commentators, publishers, and creators.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Internet widened in scope to encompass the IT capabilities of universities and research centers, and, later on, public entities, institutions, and private enterprises from around the world. The Internet underwent immense growth; it was no longer a state-controlled project, but the largest computer network in the world, comprising over 50,000 sub-networks, 4 million systems, and 70 million users.

The emergence of  web 2.0  in the first decade of the twenty-first century was itself a revolution in the short history of the Internet, fostering the rise of social media and other interactive, crowd-based communication tools.

The Internet was no longer concerned with information exchange alone: it was a sophisticated multidisciplinary tool enabling individuals to create content, communicate with one another, and even escape reality. Today, we can send data from one end of the world to the other in a matter of seconds, make online presentations, live in parallel “game worlds,” and use pictures, video, sound, and text to share our real lives, our genuine identity. Personal stories go public; local issues become global.

The rise of the Internet has sparked a debate about how online communication affects social relationships. The Internet frees us from geographic fetters and brings us together in topic-based communities that are not tied down to any specific place. Ours is a networked, globalized society connected by new technologies. The Internet is the tool we use to interact with one another, and accordingly poses new challenges to privacy and security.

Information technologies have wrought fundamental change throughout society, driving it forward from the industrial age to the networked era. In our world, global information networks are vital infrastructure—but in what ways has this changed human relations? The development of the Internet today is being shaped predominantly by instant, mobile communications. The mobile Internet is a fresh revolution. Comprehensive Internet connectivity via smartphones and tablets is leading to an increasingly mobile reality: we are not tied to any single specific device, and everything is in the cloud.

People no longer spend hours gazing at a computer screen after work or class; instead, they use their mobile devices to stay online everywhere, all the time.

Communication Opportunities Created by the Internet

The Internet has become embedded in every aspect of our day-to-day lives, changing the way we interact with others. This insight struck me when I started out in the world of social media. I created my first social network in 2005, when I was finishing college in the United States—it had a political theme. I could already see that social media were on the verge of changing our way of communicating, helping us to share information by opening up a new channel that cuts across conventional ones.

That first attempt did not work out, but I learned from the experience.I get the feeling that in many countries failure is punished too harshly—but the fact is, the only surefire way of avoiding failure is to do nothing at all. I firmly believe that mistakes help you improve; getting it wrong teaches you how to get it right. Creativity, hard work, and a positive attitude will let you achieve any goal.

In 2006, after I moved to Spain, I created Tuenti. Tuenti (which, contrary to widespread belief, has nothing to do with the number 20; it is short for “tu entidad,” the Spanish for “your entity”) is a social communication platform for genuine friends. From the outset, the idea was to keep it simple, relevant, and private. That’s the key to its success.

I think the real value of social media is that you can stay in touch from moment to moment with the people who really matter to you. Social media let you share experiences and information; they get people and ideas in touch instantly, without frontiers. Camaraderie, friendship, and solidarity—social phenomena that have been around for as long as humanity itself—have been freed from the conventional restrictions of space and time and can now thrive in a rich variety of ways.

Out of all the plethora of communication opportunities that the Internet has opened up, I would highlight the emergence of social media and the way they have intricately melded into our daily lives. Social media have changed our personal space, altering the way we interact with our loved ones, our friends, and our sexual partners; they have forced us to rethink even basic daily processes like studying and shopping; they have affected the economy by nurturing the business startup culture and electronic commerce; they have even given us new ways to form broad-based political movements.

The Internet and Education

The Internet has clearly impacted all levels of education by providing unbounded possibilities for learning. I believe the future of education is a networked future. People can use the Internet to create and share knowledge and develop new ways of teaching and learning that captivate and stimulate students’ imagination at any time, anywhere, using any device. By connecting and empowering students and educators, we can speed up economic growth and enhance the well-being of society throughout the world. We should work together, over a network, to build the global learning society.

The network of networks is an inexhaustible source of information. What’s more, the Internet has enabled users to move away from their former passive role as mere recipients of messages conveyed by conventional media to an active role, choosing what information to receive, how, and when. The information recipient even decides whether or not they want to stay informed.

We have moved on from scattergun mass communication to a pattern where the user proactively selects the information they need.

Students can work interactively with one another, unrestricted by physical or time constraints. Today, you can use the Internet to access libraries, encyclopedias, art galleries, news archives, and other information sources from anywhere in the world: I believe this is a key advantage in the education field. The web is a formidable resource for enhancing the process of building knowledge.

I also believe the Internet is a wonderful tool for learning and practicing other languages—this continues to be a critical issue in many countries, including Spain, and, in a globalized world, calls for special efforts to improve.

The Internet, in addition to its communicative purposes, has become a vital tool for exchanging knowledge and education; it is not just an information source, or a locus where results can be published, it is also a channel for cooperating with other people and groups who are working on related research topics.

The Internet and Privacy and Security

Another key issue surrounding Internet use is privacy. Internet users are becoming more sensitive to the insight that privacy is a must-have in our lives.

Privacy has risen near the top of the agenda in step with an increasing awareness of the implications of using social media. Much of the time, people started to use social media with no real idea of the dangers, and have wised up only through trial and error—sheer accident, snafus, and mistakes. Lately, inappropriate use of social media seems to hit the headlines every day. Celebrities posting inappropriate comments to their profiles, private pictures and tapes leaked to the Internet at large, companies displaying arrogance toward users, and even criminal activities involving private-data trafficking or social media exploitation.

All this shows that—contrary to what many people seem to have assumed—online security and privacy are critical, and, I believe, will become even more important going forward. And, although every user needs privacy, the issue is particularly sensitive for minors—despite attempts to raise their awareness, children still behave recklessly online.

I have always been highly concerned about privacy. On Tuenti, the default privacy setting on every user account is the highest available level of data protection. Only people the user has accepted as a “friend” can access their personal details, see their telephone number, or download their pictures. This means that, by default, user information is not accessible to third parties. In addition, users are supported by procedures for reporting abuse. Any user can report a profile or photograph that is abusive, inappropriate, or violates the terms of use: action is taken immediately. Security and privacy queries are resolved within 24 hours.

We need to be aware that different Internet platforms provide widely different privacy experiences. Some of them are entirely open and public; no steps whatsoever are taken to protect personal information, and all profiles are indexable by Internet search engines.

On the other hand, I think the debate about whether social media use should be subject to an age requirement is somewhat pointless, given that most globally active platforms operate without age restrictions. The European regulatory framework is quite different from the United States and Asian codes. Companies based in Europe are bound by rigorous policies on privacy and underage use of social media. This can become a competitive drawback when the ground rules do not apply equally to all players—our American and Japanese competitors, for instance, are not required to place any kind of age constraint on access.

Outside the scope of what the industry or regulators can do, it is vital that users themselves look after the privacy of their data. I believe the information is the user’s property, so the user is the only party entitled to control the collection, use, and disclosure of any information about him or herself. Some social networks seem to have forgotten this fact—they sell data, make it impossible to delete an account, or make it complex and difficult to manage one’s privacy settings. Everything should be a lot simpler and more transparent.

Social networks should continue to devote intense efforts to developing self-regulation mechanisms and guidelines for this new environment of online coexistence to ensure that user information is safe: the Internet should be a space for freedom, but also for trust. The main way of ensuring that social media are used appropriately is awareness. But awareness and user education will be of little use unless it becomes an absolute requirement that the privacy of the individual is treated as a universal value.

The Internet and Culture

As in the sphere of education, the development of information and communication technologies and the wide-ranging effects of globalization are changing what we are, and the meaning of cultural identity. Ours is a complex world in which cultural flows across borders are always on the rise. The concepts of space, time, and distance are losing their conventional meanings. Cultural globalization is here, and a global movement of cultural processes and initiatives is underway.

Again, in the cultural arena, vast fields of opportunity open up thanks to online tools. The possibilities are multiplied for disseminating a proposal, an item of knowledge, or a work of art. Against those doomsayers who warn that the Internet is harming culture, I am radically optimistic. The Internet is bringing culture closer to more people, making it more easily and quickly accessible; it is also nurturing the rise of new forms of expression for art and the spread of knowledge. Some would say, in fact, that the Internet is not just a technology, but a cultural artifact in its own right.

In addition to its impact on culture itself, the Internet is enormously beneficial for innovation, which brings progress in all fields of endeavor—the creation of new goods, services, and ideas, the advance of knowledge and society, and increasing well-being.

The Internet and Personal Relationships

The Internet has also changed the way we interact with our family, friends, and life partners. Now everyone is connected to everyone else in a simpler, more accessible, and more immediate way; we can conduct part of our personal relationships using our laptops, smart phones, and tablets.

The benefits of always-online immediate availability are highly significant. I would find a long-distance relationship with my life partner or my family unthinkable without the communication tools that the network of networks provides me with. I’m living in Madrid, but I can stay close to my brother in California. For me, that is the key plus of the Internet: keeping in touch with the people who really matter to me.

As we have seen, the Internet revolution is not just technological; it also operates at a personal level, and throughout the structure of society. The Internet makes it possible for an unlimited number of people to communicate with one another freely and easily, in an unrestricted way.

Just a century ago, this was unimaginable. An increasing number of couples come together, stay together, or break up with the aid—or even as a consequence—of social communication tools. There are even apps and social networks out there that are purposely designed to help people get together for sex.

Of course, when compared to face-to-face communication, online communication is severely limited in the sense impressions it can convey (an estimated 60 to 70 percent of human communication takes place nonverbally), which can lead to misunderstandings and embarrassing situations—no doubt quite a few relationships have floundered as a result. I think the key is to be genuine, honest, and real at all times, using all the social media tools and their many advantages. Let’s just remember that a liar and a cheat online is a liar and a cheat offline too.

The Internet and Social and Political Activism

Even before the emergence of social media, pioneering experiments took place in the political sphere—like  Essembly , a project I was involved in. We started to create a politically themed platform to encourage debate and provide a home for social and political causes; but the social networks that have later nurtured activism in a new way were not as yet in existence.

Research has shown that young people who voice their political opinions on the Internet are more inclined to take part in public affairs. The better informed a citizen is, the more likely they will step into the polling booth, and the better they will express their political liberties. The Internet has proved to be a decisive communication tool in the latest election campaigns. It is thanks to the Internet that causes in the social, welfare, ideological, and political arenas have been spoken up for and have won the support of other citizens sharing those values—in many cases, with a real impact on government decision making.

The Internet and Consumer Trends

New technologies increase the speed of information transfer, and this opens up the possibility of “bespoke” shopping. The Internet offers an immense wealth of possibilities for buying content, news, and leisure products, and all sorts of advantages arise from e-commerce, which has become a major distribution channel for goods and services. You can book airline tickets, get a T-shirt from Australia, or buy food at an online grocery store. New applications support secure business transactions and create new commercial opportunities.

In this setting, it is the consumer who gains the upper hand, and the conventional rules and methods of distribution and marketing break down. Consumers’ access to information multiplies, and their reviews of their experience with various products and services take center stage. Access to product comparisons and rankings, user reviews and comments, and recommendations from bloggers with large followings have shaped a new scenario for consumer behavior, retail trade, and the economy in general.

The Internet and the Economy

The Internet is one of the key factors driving today’s economy. No one can afford to be left behind. Even in a tough macroeconomic framework, the Internet can foster growth, coupled with enhanced productivity and competitiveness.

The Internet provides opportunities for strengthening the economy: How should we tackle them? While Europe—and Spain specifically—are making efforts to make the best possible use of the Internet, there are areas in which their approach needs to improve. Europe faces a major challenge, and risks serious failure if it lets the United States run ahead on its own. The European Commission, in its “Startup Manifesto,” suggests that the Old World be more entrepreneur-friendly—the proposal is backed by companies like Spotify and Tuenti. Europe lacks some of the necessary know-how. We need to improve in financial services and in data privacy, moving past the obsolete regulatory framework we now have and making a bid to achieve a well-connected continent with a single market for 4G mobile connections. We need to make it easier to hire talent outside each given country.

The use of e-commerce should be encouraged among small and medium-sized enterprises so that growth opportunities can be exploited more intensely. Following the global trend of the Internet, companies should internalize their online business. And much more emphasis should be placed on new technologies training in the academic and business spheres.

Modern life is global, and Spain is competing against every other country in the world. I do not believe in defeatism or victim culture. Optimism should not translate into callousness, but I sincerely believe that if you think creatively, if you find a different angle, if you innovate with a positive attitude and without fear of failure, then you can change things for the better. Spain needs to seize the moment to reinvent itself, grasping the opportunities offered up by the online world. We need to act, take decisions, avoid “paralysis through analysis.” I sometimes feel we are too inclined to navel-gazing: Spain shuts itself off, fascinated with its own contradictions and local issues, and loses its sense of perspective. Spain should open up to the outside, use the crisis as an opportunity to do things differently, in a new way—creating value, underlining its strengths, aspiring to be something more.

In the United States, for instance, diving headfirst into a personal Internet-related startup is regarded as perfectly normal. I’m glad to see that this entrepreneurial spirit is beginning to take hold here as well. I believe in working hard, showing perseverance, keeping your goals in view, surrounding yourself with talent, and taking risks. No risk, no success. We live in an increasingly globalized world: of course you can have a Spain-based Internet startup, there are no frontiers.

We need to take risks and keep one step ahead of the future. It is precisely the most disruptive innovations that require radical changes in approach and product, which might not even find a market yet ready for them—these are the areas providing real opportunities to continue being relevant, to move forward and “earn” the future, creating value and maintaining leadership. It is the disruptive changes that enable a business, product, or service to revolutionize the market—and, particularly in the technology sector, such changes are a necessity.

The Future of Social Communications, Innovation, Mobile Technologies, and Total Connectivity in Our Lives

The future of social communications will be shaped by an  always-online  culture.  Always online  is already here and will set the trend going forward. Total connectivity, the Internet you can take with you wherever you go, is growing unstoppably. There is no turning back for global digitalization.

Innovation is the driving force of growth and progress, so we need to shake up entrenched processes, products, services, and industries, so that all of us together—including established businesses, reacting to their emerging competitors—can move forward together.

Innovation is shaping and will continue to shape the future of social communications. It is already a reality that Internet connections are increasingly mobile. A survey we conducted in early 2013 in partnership with Ipsos found that 94 percent of Tuenti users aged 16 to 35 owned cell phones, 84 percent of users connected to the Internet using their phones, and 47 percent had mobile data subscriptions for connecting to the Internet. A total of 74 percent of users reported connecting to the Internet from their phone on a daily basis, while 84 percent did so at least weekly. Only 13 percent did not use their phones to connect to the Internet, and that percentage is decreasing every day.

Mobile Internet use alters the pattern of device usage; the hitherto familiar ways of accessing the Internet are changing too. The smartphone activities taking up the most time (over three hours a day) include instant messaging (38%), social media use (35%), listening to music (24%), and web browsing (20%). The activities taking up the least time (under five minutes a day) are: SMS texting (51%), watching movies (43%), reading and writing e-mail (38%), and talking on the phone (32%). Things are still changing.

Smartphones are gaining ground in everyday life. Many of the purposes formerly served by other items now involve using our smartphones. Some 75 percent of young people reported having replaced their MP3 player with their phone, 74 percent use their phone as an alarm clock, 70 percent use it as their camera, and 67 percent use it as their watch.

We have been observing these shifts for a while, which is why we decided to reinvent ourselves by placing smartphones at the heart of our strategy. I want to use this example as a showcase of what is happening in the world of social communication and the Internet in general: mobile connectivity is bringing about a new revolution. Tuenti is no longer just a social network, and social media as a whole are becoming more than just websites. The new Tuenti provides native mobile apps for Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone, as well as the Firefox OS app and the mobile version of the website, m.tuenti.com. Tuenti is now a cross-platform service that lets users connect with their friends and contacts from wherever they may be, using their device of choice. A user with a laptop can IM in real time with a user with a smartphone, and switch from one device to another without losing the thread of the conversation. The conversations are in the cloud, so data and contacts are preserved independently of the devices being used. This means the experience has to be made uniform across platforms, which sometimes involves paring down functionalities, given the processing and screen size limitations of mobile devices. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and so on are all evolving to become increasingly cross-platform experiences. But Tuenti is the first social network that has also developed its own Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)—the company is an Internet service provider over the mobile network. Tuenti is an MVNO with a social media angle, and this may be the future path of telecommunications.

Social media are evolving to become something more, and innovation must be their hallmark if they are to continue being relevant. Tuenti now embraces both social communications and telecom services provision, offering value added by letting you use the mobile app free of charge and without using up your data traffic allowance, even if you have no credit on your prepaid card—this is wholly revolutionary in the telecom sector. The convergence of social media with more traditional sectors is already bringing about a new context for innovation, a new arena for the development and growth of the Internet.

Just about everything in the world of the Internet still lies ahead of us, and mobile communications as we know them must be reinvented by making them more digital. The future will be shaped by innovation converging with the impact of mobility. This applies not just to social media but to the Internet in general, particularly in the social communications field. I feel that many people do not understand what we are doing and have no idea of the potential development of companies like ours at the global level. Right now, there may be somebody out there, in some corner of the world, developing the tool that will turn the Internet upside down all over again. The tool that will alter our day-to-day life once more. Creating more opportunities, providing new benefits to individuals, bringing more individual and collective well-being. Just ten years ago, social media did not exist; in the next ten years, something else radically new will emerge. There are many areas in which products, processes, and services can be improved or created afresh. The future is brimming with opportunities, and the future of the Internet has only just begun.

The interconnection between the lives of human beings and the internet is not only complex and intertwined but also a cause of concern today. With easy access to information, questions are being raised on the impact of this trend and whether the moral fabric of the society is under any threat. This paper addresses some of these issues with emphasis on online dating, politics and religious life.

With the growing use of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, the society is coming to terms with certain phenomena that were earlier condemned and demonized (Worstall, 2011). Of particular interest is online dating which has captivated the mind of millions of people around the world, triggering debates, discussions and research in order to have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of online dating.

The question of acceptability of online dating has for instance received a wide range of discrepancies with some people supporting the idea while others believe that it is unethical (Reuters, 2010). It is therefore true to say that almost every person has an opinion concerning online dating and whether young people should be allowed to find their soul mates through the internet.

According to Casciato (2010), online dating has gained acceptance among young people with close to thirty percent of web users considering it as a viable source of their romantic friends. In his 2010 research, Casciato (2010) further noted that Pakistan and India recorded the highest number of people who would prefer using the internet as a channel for romantic introductions.

With almost 60 percent of Indians and Pakistanis accepting online dating, it is obvious that the perception over the web is continuously changing (Casciato, 2010). In my day to day life, these disparities do exist with people having varying stances on the use of the internet.

Many still believe that there are other natural ways of meeting spouses and relating other than using the internet which may sound like a communication machine. Nevertheless, in this time and age where communication technology has overtaken almost every aspect of our lives, online dating cannot be absolutely ruled out.

As mentioned above, the internet plays a major role in almost every aspect of human life. In politics, technology has been used to a wider extent resulting into multiple reactions and effects. For instance, the 2008 American race to the White House welcomed significant application of the internet as a tool to encourage democracy and political participation (Nagourney, 2008).

According to Nagourney (2008), the campaign redefined ways of reaching out to voters, mobilizing funds, selling ideas and manifesto and tracking of the public opinion among other issues. Through numerous blogs and websites, politicians and political parties reach out to citizens with an aim of influencing their voting decisions (Council on Foreign Relations, n.d.).

The internet also allows voters to interact with politicians from different destinations around the world. It can also be argued that the internet is able to reach to people who may not necessarily rely on the main stream media like television and newspapers for news updates (Tabler, 2011).

With over 70% of Americans having access to the internet, its role and place in the current political arena cannot be ignored. Most people spend a lot of their time online making it convenient to track political developments in offices and at home (Quintelier & Vissers, 2008).

It has to be noted that social media networks and the internet at large did not cause the upheavals in the Arab world. However, it played a major role in propagating information (Saletan, 2011).

Through cascades of messages which were carried across networks, the need for freedom and democracy came to the attention of millions of people leading to the spread of revolutions around the Arab World. Several political groups created social accounts, blogs and YouTube contents that were solely meant to communicate the spirit of uprising in the region (Howard, 2011).

As a reservoir of a wide range of information, the internet has become a source of spiritual edification for millions of people around the world. The question which lingers in the minds of many is whether we are headed for an e-Church of e-Religion that will cater for the needs of many who are seeking their holistic satisfaction online (Dawson & Cowan, 2004).

How then does internet pose a threat to religious institutions around the world? It is worth noting that the web has not only attracted the unrighteous and spared the saints but rather everybody including pastors and Sheikhs are considering World Wide Web (WWW) to be their daily destination in terms of colleting sermons and spiritual content around the world.

The ultimate consequence of having this scenario is that religion and religious institutions get transformed with time (Davie, Woodhead & Heelas, 2003).

How authentic is a web sermon? Many analysts argue that some web authors do not have moral authority to write sermons which are being downloaded and fed to believers on a daily basis. The sanctity of the web space is also questionable; having in mind the fact that it contains both illicit and palatable information.

Internet sermons therefore usually carry the image of the source and may sometimes express the feelings of the original author whose intensions and beliefs could be different from what is to be communicated (Laan, 2009).

As a result, the nature and perception of people over spiritual life changes to comply with the internet which may be considered as a true source of spiritual nourishment. The challenge remains to the religious leaders to not only integrate the web but also guard against negative impact of online sermons.

Technological advancements realized in recent years remain major achievements of the 21 st century. Among countless benefits, these developments have significantly simplified and transformed communication modes and efficiency (Silverstein & Lasky, 2003). The use of the internet which connects the whole world permits sharing, access and transfer of information at ones comfort zone at a click of the mouse.

Indeed every sphere of human life has been touched in one way or the other ranging from social, economical and spiritual. Businesses have expanded and realized tremendous growth through the integration of internet technology and digitalization.

Young people have resolved to use the internet as the avenue to develop relationships through dating while other people consider the internet as their source of spiritual nourishment (Casciato, 2010).

Of importance is the fact that there exists an interconnection between the internet and the lives of people. As a result, no one can run away from the web; it is either affecting you directly or indirectly. For many adults, who may consider the internet as a source of very important materials, they may be rudely shocked to learn that their sons and daughters are finding marriage partners online (Silverman et al., 2007).

Should the society denounce the internet and revert to 19 th century technology? Logically, the internet is a major achievement in the history of human kind and no one would dare consider such a move. The advantages of the internet by far outweigh its demerits, qualifying its application to be worldly acceptable.

An understanding of the predisposing factors which make internet use threatening is equally important. For instance, many people who prefer online dating do so because of certain existing circumstances and conditions. Issues like nature of career and level of education play a pivotal role in determining individuals’ reactions towards the use of the internet and its perceived effects.

People with lower education level easily accept the use of the internet as a dating channel as compared to those with advanced qualifications (Attwood, 2007). This disparity explains why particular generations appreciate the idea than others.

Additionally, people with tight working schedules find a lot of comfort in making online friendships because of limited time as defined by their careers. Online dating also offers a wider range of possibilities in terms of choices as opposed to the traditional way of meeting friends which could be limited geographically.

No one can deny that online communication has turned out to be a significant toolkit for leaders around the world. Nevertheless, it has to be emphasized that the internet can pull down the leadership of a country especially in cases of revolutions as witnessed in the Arab World (Council on Foreign Relations, n.d.).

In a dictatorial environment where freedom of speech is limited, the internet has been employed as a last resort in mobilizing people and making them fight for their deprived rights.

Based on the above arguments, it is evident that the web plays an enormous role in human life mainly by augmenting the flow and access to information around the world. This has generated varying perceptions within the public with a section denouncing this mega communication tool.

There is every need to cautiously appreciate the role of the internet since it has two sides which could either be beneficial or destructive to the society.

The Internet Communication

The Internet, as one of the types of communication, appeared in 1957 in the USA in order to create a new information transfer system. There are also other types of mass media such as radio, TV, and newspaper; and the Internet is the fourth type that entered the sphere of mass media. The Internet is a more specific type of communication than newspapers and TV because it possesses the characteristic features of both types, and it will possess not only these features in the future.

The Internet expands its borders and now, even if people do not read the newspapers and do not watch TV, they will not miss something valuable, because the Internet today is the most widespread system of transferring information.

The Internet is not the last excellent source of information in our developing society. In the near future, there must be some innovations that will help the Internet to develop its possibilities and perspectives due to its influence on the media audience.

If we speak about media technologies it is important to admit that they develop very fast, and people cannot sometimes even catch the technological development. The Internet uses modern technology to possess the fastest way of transferring information. This type of communication helps people not only to find and get the necessary information but also develop their own business, for example, or communicate with their relatives if they live abroad (Pelsmaker, 72).

If we speak about business then there are a lot of possibilities to promote your company or corporation, to make a lot of advertisements of the services you provide; and it gives you a wonderful chance to increase the level of your company.

Earlier there were no computers, the Internet, and mobile phones, the technological progress made an essential impact on the development of types of mass media. The evolution of technologies gives the great chance for people who want to do business. The internet helps many companies to support all the current processes such as advertisements, communication with international clients; and even helps to find the customers on the services they provide (SD dimension, 1).

Most of the companies have their own website in order to promote the organization. If the customer is interested in the service of this or that company he can easily search the Internet and find the necessary information. There are a lot of different chats which help people to communicate with each other sending different messages and receiving letters.

If we are interested in a particular topic and we want to discuss it with other people or just to read the meanings of other people, we can easily do it. Forums are services which are provided by different internet companies. We can discuss different questions on this or that topic and even if we do not know anything about this topic but we are interested in it, you can read the information which is provided by people on the forum.

The Internet is a very influential type of mass media. It gives the society a lot of different possibilities to find the necessary information or just to communicate with foreigners.

The potential of the Internet for the development of new interactive media is very huge. The Internet gives a valuable example of how technological progress can influence the development of new types of mass media. The Internet is a vivid example of such a new type of communication. Nowadays, with the help of the Internet, people have the opportunity to find the information they need, go shopping, or play online casinos at home (Hirts, 145).

The Internet provides different communication services, such as e-mail, internet telephone, and web cameras, and also the service of emergency calls. E-mail is one of the most important services provided by the Internet.

It gives a great opportunity to send messages to another person even if he has an e-mail on different networks. Very essential thing is to distinguish the difference between the internet and internal e-mail (SD dimension, 1).

Using the internet e-mail you can deliver the letter or messages to a person even if he has an e-mail address of different networks. Internal e-mail is such a kind of e-mail that is usually used for corporative communication. For example, if you work in a large organization or a company; and you should communicate with workers who work together with you. Or you have to use internal e-mail in order to communicate with your chief. The internal e-mail is used only in the organization and no one could read these messages. The documents and files can be sent through e-mail as an attachment.

Another service of communication that is provided by the Internet is Internet telephony. Internet telephony can be used as a usual telephone. So to say, people can communicate with each other hearing the voice. The idea of telephony on the Internet appeared in the 1990s like voice applications for computers. The main peculiarity of it is that Internet has the voice traffic. It may cost some money but also can be free. And if it is free, the cost of it will be less than the usual traditional telephone, especially, when you call in long distances.

To understand how Internet communication can be influenced by commercial interests there are a lot of web-based examples which have commercial interests.

The first web-based example is the website http://www.lpmedia.net. This is the site of the commercial company L&P Media. This company provides global communication solutions through mediums and technologies. L&P supports a great number of clients in order to reach communication purposes. They can reach the purposes in any format. They provide social media as well as brand building.

Another vivid example is the website www.doubledogcommunications.com. The site of the company provides different services for its clients. Everyone can become a client of this company. The present-day society usually has the ability to connect the commercial internet companies in order to have a good quality of communication or promoting of the business. But, there is also another part of the society that thinks that it is not accessible to pay for the communication.

The Internet Might Actually Be Good for Us After All

People who used the internet reported higher scores for outcomes like community well-being and life satisfaction.

Scrolling your phone sounds like the opposite of self-care, but new research suggests that internet use and access actually boost one’s happiness. 

In a massive new study published in the journal Technology, Mind, and Behavior , researchers examined what kind of effect the internet has on psychological well-being. They found that people who had access to the internet scored 8% higher on well-being measures than those who lacked web access. The effect was similar to the benefit associated with taking a walk in nature. 

The study looked at eight well-being outcomes: life satisfaction; daily negative and positive experiences; two measures of social well-being; physical well-being; community well-being; and experiences of purpose.

Locating local internet providers

They then used a series of multiverse analyses to determine how these measures differed between individuals who had access to and used the internet regularly and those who didn't. The data spanned 15 years, from 2006 to 2021 and included more than 2.4 million people in 168 countries. The authors intentionally sought out a more global perspective on internet use than previous research had offered.

“While the Internet is global, the study of it is not,” said Andrew Przybylski, one of the study’s authors, in a press briefing on May 9. “More than 90% of data sets come from a handful of English-speaking countries” that are mostly in the global north, he said.

How can the internet possibly be good for us?

The study doesn’t provide specific answers about why going online could make us happier, but other research has found that the internet can be a source of social support and community for people living with physical disabilities, create a sense of belonging among adolescents and spur a reduction in depression among older adults .  

The internet is increasingly linked with health when it comes to treatment, too -- particularly for mental health . One study published by the American Medical Association found that 88% of mental health treatment facilities offered telehealth services in September 2022 compared with 39.4% of facilities in April 2019.

Because the internet touches so many parts of our lives, organizations like the Federal Communications Commission and SAMHSA have even called broadband a "super-determinant" of health because of its influence on education, employment and health care access.

"The delivery of clinical services only contributes 20% to health outcomes. 40% is what we call socioeconomic status," Carole Myers, a professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville who studies health care access and disparities, told CNET. "It's things like your income level, your education level and the resources that are available in your community." 

"Broadband access is really important for telehealth," Myers said, "but it's important for economic development, for attracting businesses -- it's important for education. And in turn those things drive health." 

Another recent study , from the National Bureau of Economic Research, found that a 10% increase in the proportion of county residents with access to broadband internet leads to a 1.01% reduction in the number of suicides in a county, “as well as improvements in self-reported mental and physical health.”

There are still reasons to be cautious about internet use

Even though this new study found that the internet makes most of us happier, there was one notable exception. Among women between the ages of 15 and 24, there was a negative association between internet use and reports of community well-being. 

The authors noted that this is "consistent with previous reports of increased cyberbullying and more negative associations between social media use and depressive symptoms among young women.” 

A report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 57% of teen girls reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless in 2021. Another study found that “selfie posting on social media is harmful in terms of young women’s mood and self-image.”

Tips for a healthier life online

There are several steps you can take to minimize these harmful sides of internet life, including unplugging from social media periodically. Research has found that digital detoxes can improve symptoms of depression , among other mental health benefits. Another study conducted on college students who underwent social media detoxes between one to seven days found that most students reported positive changes in mood, better productivity, improved sleep and reduced anxiety.

It doesn’t have to be as severe as a weeklong detox, either. Taking periodic breaks from your phone throughout the day can add up to bigger changes, like improved sleep quality . CNET writer Jessica Fierro also suggests taking advantage of the Focus modes on your iPhone or Android phone .

The internet has become vital to our work, health and social lives, and, shockingly, it even makes us happier. But like most things in life, it’s still best when done in moderation.

The growing need for faster broadband connections drives up demand for fiber connections, and this plays well into what FYBR is offering to consumers today. With little to no competitors in the region it covers, the demand visibility for FYBR is clear, as can be seen from its historical fiber penetration rate.

Business Overview

FYBR is the largest pure-play fiber internet service provider in the US. As of 1Q24, FYBR has a total of 2.97 million broadband customers, split between 2.7 million consumer customers and 240 thousand business customers. The infrastructure that FYBR uses includes both fiber and copper, with fiber being the main revenue driver (55% as of 1Q24).

Demand for data necessitates fiber connectivity

It is a known fact that household bandwidth needs are increasing, driven by the increasing demand for streaming content, the usage of latency-sensitive applications (video calls, for instance), and the Internet of Things. To illustrate this impact, global internet speeds have risen rapidly over the past few years, from ~25Mbps in 2020 to ~47Mbps in 2023, and access to the internet has grown every single year over the past two decades . Consequently, the total consumption of data has also risen .

I do not see a future where the world will consume less data moving forward, and as such, the demand for gigabit-capable broadband technologies should continue to go up from here. To facilitate such connectivity, I believe fiber connection is the most optimal choice, relative to copper , DSL , and cable . The biggest advantage of fiber connections in today’s world is their ability to deliver symmetrical (both down and upload) low-latency connectivity. This was not super important in the past because consumers had little need for strong upload speeds (most use the internet to watch videos ). That is not the case anymore today; the growing adoption of video calls, live streaming, mobile connectivity (uploading work documents), etc. necessitates very strong upload speeds.

Therefore, I am a strong believer that more consumers will adopt fiber connections when they are offered the opportunity to do so. Note that FYBR is not pioneering a new form of infrastructure with its fiber plans, so the adoption curve should not vary widely from its historical adoption rate. According to management, FYBR has historically seen base-line penetration (passings acquired from Verizon in 2016 ) move towards >40% over time, consistently . This also means that FYBR has a strong visibility to growth whenever they lay out new fiber passings.

As of the past few quarters, FYBR average new fiber passings per quarter are 330 thousand, or ~1.2 million a year, and because new fiber passings are higher than customer adds, this has resulted in total fiber penetration declining. But this is a good thing. Given the predictable demand precedent from the base fiber passing, it suggests that there is still plenty of room for growth.

The pushback is that consumers may adopt other service providers fiber plans. There is certainly a scenario of that, but the good news is that a large majority (86%) of FYBR's current footprint has one or fewer competitors, which means FYBR predominantly operates as a monopoly, or duopoly. In areas where FYBR is the monopoly, the growth runway is clear as there is no competition. As for the duopolistic areas, the growth profile is also attractive. Firstly, there will be very little price competition as both parties are likely to be rational and grow together given the strong secular tailwind. Secondly, due to the capital-intensive nature of residential broadband deployments and sticky customer base (FYBR had 1.2% consumer fiber churn in 1Q24), there are little to no reasons to incentivize a third player to penetrate the market.

Now why are we doing that, of course, in-part to make sure that we preserve the very attractive market structure that we operate in, where across our footprint, in 86% of our footprint, we have one or fewer gigabit capable competitors and market structure is one of the most attractive things about the fiber market in the US and relatively unique in my experience relative to other markets around the world. 1Q24 earnings transcript

Attractive unit economics masked by voice and video segment

FYBR strategy is to focus on fiber and deprioritize its voice and video segments, which I think is the right strategic move as those two segments are either in secular decline or face strong competition. Collectively, these two segments represent 28% of total revenue and are declining at a low-teens percentage annually, which translates to low-to-mid-single-digit growth headwind at the topline.

Over time, FYBR should see topline acceleration due to two reasons. Firstly, the above two segments will become a smaller mix; hence, the growth impact is smaller. Secondly, FYBR fiber connections have a higher average revenue per user [ARPU] than their copper connections. As of 1Q24, the difference is around 16% (consumer fiber ARPU: $65 vs. copper ARPU: $56), so FYBR should see a positive mix shift impact from this as fiber connections become the larger mix (driven by the secular tailwinds I mentioned ahead). Thirdly, because of the value proposition that FYBR brings to consumers and the duopoly or monopoly operating environment, FYBR should be able to continue raising prices (2.5% CAGR over the past 5 years).

I model FYBR using a forward EBITDA approach, and using my assumptions, I believe FYBR is worth $33. The growth outlook is pretty visible, in my opinion. So long as FYBR continues to execute like it has done over the past few quarters, growth should accelerate, as I have discussed above. As the topline grows, the EBITDA margin should grow accordingly, in line with management guidance for FY24. To sense-check management guidance, 1Q24 adj EBITDA already grew at 5.4%, so it should not be hard for FYBR to grow at that range moving forward. The driver of higher EBITDA growth anchors on margin expansion, for which I am taking a conservative approach as management intends to continue investing in more fiber passes, which requires reinvestments. Other listed fiber players (T-Mobile, Altice USA, Verizon Communications, Charter Communications, Comcast Corp., and Dish Network) are all trading in the same range as FYBR at 6 to 8x forward EBITDA at an average expected EBITDA growth of low-to-mid-single-digit percentage range. As I expect FYBR to grow EBITDA at mid-single-digits, I believe it deserves to trade at the high end of the valuation range.

FYBR's strategy of focusing on standalone fiber-based broadband may not appeal to certain potential customers relative to cable operators’ connectivity bundles. If management decides to step up investment in expanding its fiber network, it may cause near-term profitability to plummet as it would see a step up in operating costs and CAPEX. Lastly, FYBR has a pretty high leverage ratio of 4.5x LTM EBITDA. If demand fails to materialize as expected, it may impact FYBR's ability to pay down debt.

My view for FYBR is a buy rating. The base assumption I have is that the growing need for faster internet speeds will drive more fiber connection adoption. Given that there is limited competition in most regions that FYBR covers, it enjoys a clear runway for growth. The higher ARPU of fiber connections, price increases, and diminishing mix of declining segments should drive revenue acceleration and margin expansion.

Verizon bolsters wireless, home internet plans, adds streaming video deals and drops new logo

Verizon's new brand strategy includes a new logo. the telecom company also upgraded its coverage plans to include trade-ins of broken phones, plus streaming video bargains on netflix and disney..

With a slew of new subscriber options and a revamped brand strategy, Verizon wants customers to know, "We hear you now."

The telecom giant kicks off a new advertising campaign Wednesday that harkens back to the "Can You Hear Me Now?" commercials. The ad starts with an appearance by the iconic Verizon technician, who originally was portrayed by an actor but is now a real Verizon engineer named Mike Morgan.

The action then expands into other ways the company connects customers, including smartphone messaging and video connections, home broadband, online gaming and electronic payments.

"We are a telco company but, truly, we are a life company," Leslie Berland, Verizon's chief marketing officer, told USA TODAY. "Whether you are at home … (or) on the road, whether you are at work, whether you are traveling … in times of amazingness or times of crisis, Verizon is there."

Verizon rolling out streaming deals with campaign

The new ad will be seen on broadcast and streaming TV, as well as on social media and in theaters.

With the new ad, Verizon "pushed ourselves (to) bring that feeling and that experience and storytelling to life in a totally different way," Berland said.

In conjunction with the brand refresh campaign come newly updated promotions, also available Wednesday. They include selected discounted streaming video deals from Disney+, and guaranteed smartphone trade-ins for devices that may be cracked and inoperable.

Verizon MyHome goal: Simplify home internet

Verizon hopes to make it easier for customers to get the desired home internet and entertainment options with its new MyHome internet plans starting at $35 monthly with auto pay and select mobile coverage (no hidden fees or equipment charges).

When you choose a plan, the price won't change for up to four years (Verizon Forward plans for low-income customers start at $20 monthly.)

Customers can now add several streaming services, including the Disney Bundle (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+), Netflix and Max (with ads), YouTube Premium and Walmart+ (which also gets you Paramount+ Essentials streaming) for $10 monthly each – a discounted rate compared to subscribing directly. Apple One and Apple Music Family subscription deals are expected to be added later this summer.

"The whole internet and entertainment market is very, very complicated today," Verizon Consumer CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath told USA TODAY. "So we've made it easy for a household to consume entertainment and get the best internet. … MyHome is aimed at solving exactly those pain points. It's a single place, all services, and you can drop and take (them when you want)."

Other optional perks include live TV from Fios TV (300+ channels) or YouTube TV (100+ channels), starting at $109 or $72.99 monthly, respectively; cloud storage, and Home Device Advisor tech support.

Verizon's wireless 5G and LTE plans reach 57 million U.S. homes and Fios fiber reaches 15 million, the company says.

Verizon wireless phone trade-in deal; NFL and Copa America giveaways

Those who have Verizon's wireless myPlan Unlimited plans will be able to trade in any smartphone, regardless of the condition, toward a new device (for a value of up to $830).

"The whole thesis of that is, accidents happen, your phone gets injured and your phone is worth nothing," Sampath said. "Don't worry about it, give it to us, we'll give you full guarantee on it. It goes back to listening to customers."

Verizon's new premium access program will give home and mobile customers access to ticket presales for concerts, including Jelly Roll's upcoming tour. Also upcoming: free tickets to Copa America matches and every NFL game in the upcoming season. Other giveaways and events include passes to red-carpet movie premieres.

Verizon drops check in its new logo

Another aspect of Verizon's rebranding is an updated logo dropping the current red checkmark – sometimes seen as a small V checkmark, too – for a red V with a yellow glow, used solo and in the name "Verizon."

The new logo and ads will play on social media and digital platforms, as well as on TV systems.

The checkmark "was launched a number of years ago, very intentionally, to deliver that message of reliability. It served that purpose," Berland said.

But the company wanted to create something "that is uniquely us … that had the energy and the openness and the vibrancy that reflects everything we do every day," she said.

The new laptop-sized Starlink Mini could be the ultimate off-grid travel gadget

Starlink , the satellite internet division of SpaceX, is now offering a new smaller, more portable dish it calls the Mini .

At 11.75 inches by 10.2 inches and weighing less than 2.5 pounds, the laptop-sized device fits easily into a backpack and can reach 100Mbps.

It also draws less power than the full-sized Standard , which means the Mini is capable of running on a 100W USB-C PD battery pack, which The Verge estimates estimates could give you about an hour of run-time on a 10,000mAh pack.

"I just set it up right now and am writing this post through space. Took less than 5 mins," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote on X. "This product will change the world."

Musk also claimed his connection achieved a remarkably low 23ms latency — fast enough for online gaming.

The unit costs $599 in the US, but sales here are currently by invitation only as an add-on service to residential service plans.

Additional regions will be available in the future, but for now only customers in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama can purchase a Mini, where it is available at a lower price with a special standalone service option.

"Our goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable," Starlink said .

Outdoor enthusiasts and digital nomads alike welcomed the concept on X.

"This would be a game-changer for me," Ron Stauffer posted . "I've spent the past decade awkwardly Wi-Fi-hopping from coffee shops to restaurants to coworking spaces and tethering from my iPhone. I always have my backpack with me, so this sounds like the perfect solution."
