“The teacher even praised the work. Thank you very much!”

I want to thank you for such a convenient service. I urgently needed an essay and did not know where to turn. Friends recommended this service. I was afraid that no one would help me in two days. But the author, who found time to help, did everything in one day. And everything is very good: everything is on topic, with examples, with conclusions. The teacher even praised the work. Thank you very much!

Table Of Contents

Essaylib.com is a custom writing service that has been on the market for more than 8 years. Although the company managed to win many repeat customers, there were some complaints and controversial points. Essaylib promises high-quality writing at affordable prices, which will exceed customers’ expectations. Well, let’s look at the service more precisely and reveal whether the company keeps its promises.

Essaylib is a strong player on the market with 8 years of experience in the field. The company offers 920 online writers, who are specialists in a particular field. The organization has more than 28 thousand orders in progress, which means that it has an extensive customer base and remains in demand among students.

Based on Essaylib’s survey, the company has 9.7 satisfaction score, which is an excellent result for a custom writing service. The company offers a wide range of services starting from writing papers from scratch and ending up with copywriting, which is convenient if you search for long-term cooperation.

essay lib

We ordered a college term paper on Management and set a deadline of 14 days. This period is enough to write a quality paper, so a writer did not have to hurry up. We filled in the order form, and a customer support representative quickly got in touch with us. The writer was found within an hour, so we could discuss all the details and provide him with explanations. Also, we regularly received updates on our order, which was good as we had nothing to worry about. The paper was delivered on time. All instructions were followed, and all major points were highlighted. Despite several punctuation mistakes, the quality of the paper was good, so we were satisfied with it.

Prices & Discounts

essay lib

Prices start from 10$ per page for a high-school pages, which is an average rate on the market. If you have a complex task or need the paper to be delivered urgently, be ready to pay twice or three times more. Moreover, the company might offer you admission help at extra cost. If you still hesitate whether to order a paper, we have great news for you! Essaylib offer a 10% discount for the first order, so you will have a chance to try the service and save your money!

Essaylib promises to provide you with a native-speaker writer, who is good at any type of writing. So, you can be sure that you will get an error-free paper, which will get a high grade. Besides, you can have 3 free revisions. If you don’t like the quality or you found some mistakes in your work, you may ask a writer to make amendments, and it will be done at no extra cost. Apart from it, the company has a money-back policy. You can get a 50%, 70% or 100% refund depending on severity of a problem. However, in this case, you will have to provide proofs and arguments to back up your position.

Reviews and online reputation

Essaylib has a very controversial reputation. Some customers are completely delighted with the outcome and come for more orders, while others claim that Essaylib is a scam. Some clients even argued that their requests for a refund were not even considered. Scores vary from 2 to 5, so we decided not to make any conclusions. Judging from our experience, the quality was good. So, you may try the service yourself and inform us about the result!

You can set a deadline of 3 hours to 20 days depending on the urgency of your order. If you look for a cheap option, you should order a paper beforehand to avoid delays and extra costs. However, if you remembered about your term paper in the last minute, you can set a deadline of 3 hours, but be ready to pay $39 per page for a high-school paper. In our case, the deadline was met, but we read about delays, so book extra time for your work.

Customer support is helpful and polite. When we placed an order, an employee immediately got in touch with us and informed us the writer was assigned to write the term paper. He also updated us on the status of an order and provided with all the necessary information. If you have more questions, you can contact a customer support representative via email or using an online chat, which works 24/7.

essay lib

The website contains all the necessary data about prices, policies, deadlines, etc. However, it is not user-friendly since we had some difficulties in placing an order. The  website  lacks a convenient calculator, which will help users place orders and estimate the final price. Additionally, colors are overly bright in some places and content is placed incorrectly, which might be distracting. Therefore, we need to request some information from customer support, which was much more convenient.

  • helpful customer support;
  • fair prices;
  • able to meet deadlines;
  • English-speaking writers;
  • good discount system.
  • no calculator;
  • controversial online reputation.
  • no lifelong discounts.

Essaylib demonstrated fair results as we received a quality paper on time. However, based on customers’ reviews, it is not always the case. So, you’d better search for other custom writing services with better reputation.

Executive summary.

essay lib

“Is Essaylib good?” That’s one of those key questions I seek out to answer with my reviews of writing services. In short, it isn’t really. It’s not a fraud as you will get your paper, but it only makes sense to use for some high-school assignments. Their writers cannot deal with higher academic levels properly, even if you pay more to get an ENL writer working on it. The company is clearly trying to create an illusion of having much more customers than they really do, and I doubt they have such a large staff of writers as they claim to have.

Essay-Lib Review: Deap Analysis

Essaylib com is operated by a Hong Kong-based company, and its support team offices are located in Ukraine and Latvia. According to the website, it helps the company to save money on rent and provide constant support (except for Sundays for some reason).

As for their writers, of which there are over 400, they also come from different countries, that’s something Essaylib is not trying to hide. There’s still a chance to hire an ENL writer for an additional cost, and all the rest are said to be professional and having undergone a rigorous testing process by an employer.

Let’s see what those writers are capable of since the range of papers they seem to be proficient in writing is rather impressive. Read this Essaylib review if you are considering using this service but need more reassurance.

Advantages and Real Drawbacks

  • An easy-to-navigate website
  • A clear and detailed refund policy
  • A helpful F.A.Q. section
  • A lack of real reviews
  • No discounts for new customers
  • Need to pay to see a writer’s samples
  • An insufficient paper quality

Overall Reputation

There are tons of customers’ comments on essay lib com on the Testimonials page, but as usual, I would not be so quick to trust them. Having scrolled through the feedback over the last three years, which took me some time because there is a lot of it, I hardly ever saw a comment that wasn’t praising the site but said it was just good enough to use.

No negative comments, which I find hard to believe, as even the best companies have people who are not satisfied with something and want everyone to know about that. So, either Essaylib is deleting all the negative comments, or all of them are fake.

Here’s an interesting thing I noticed upon checking this page on several occasions. There are about three top comments which are dated “today.” This didn’t change to a specific date when I checked back a couple days later. Seems like a trick to make you think people are constantly using this writing service even though they are not. What makes me think so? Well, I looked for Essaylib reviews elsewhere, and there wasn’t nearly as much feedback.

In fact, Trustpilot only had one positive review, and so did Sitejabber along with one negative. Another curious thing is that the positive comment was labeled as an advertisement there. Is Essaylib legit after all that? One thing is for sure, it’s not really that popular.

For a company working since 2008 and claiming to have lots of returning customers, it has very few reviews on the Internet. I checked several other sites and forums, and people say this is actually not a fraud, and they deliver the papers as promised.

The works are, however, far from perfect, and are mostly decent for high-school assignments. For higher academic levels reviewers suggest ordering a paper elsewhere.

Company Guarantees

What I really liked about Essaylib is that they provide quite specific answers to pretty much every question you can have on the site, and those are not difficult to locate. So, when I opened the money-back guarantee page, it had a list of drop-down situations you might want to get a refund in. It all seemed quite clear and fair.

It even says that if you decide to cancel your order shortly after making it, or mid through, you can get a refund, a full or a partial one, depending on whether the writer started working on it and how much has been already done. So, that’s nice to at least see such a clear and reasonable refund policy since there are cases Essaylib says you are eligible for getting your money back in full.

Essay Lib: Service Categories

EssayLib only offers writing services, but there’s a long list of assignments their writers will agree to work on for you, and they also deal with different academic levels. There is a proofreading service, but only for the papers you receive, and it costs additional 25% of the order’s price.

That seems confusing and outrageous, why should I pay more for getting a quality paper you promise? Does that mean that paying a regular fee I will get a paper which contains mistakes, does not match my requirements, and does not correspond to the chosen academic level?

Process of Ordering

Placing an order on Essaylib is a very straightforward and easy process that requires filling a form that is no different from similar ones on other writing sites. You will need to specify an academic level, type of a paper, discipline, title, paper instructions, additional materials, number of pages, and the format requirements.

This is also where you get to choose a writer’s category, which will influence the final price of your order. So, to make sure you get a work written by an experienced professional specializing in the field of study you chose, you will need to pay 25% more, and an ENL writer will cost 5% on top of that.

Essay-lib.com: Price Overview

The prices on Essaylib are neither the highest nor the lowest, starting at $10 per page for a high school academic level and ending with $33 per page for Ph.D. papers. That is if you choose the longest deadline, which is 14 days; shorter timelines will cost more.

All this is a usual practice, but if you add the choice of an experienced writer for an additional quarter of an order price, Essaylib may not seem such a good choice anymore, especially since there is no Essaylib coupon or a discount until you reach $500 paid for your orders.

There is also no distinction in the cost of a paper based on its type, whether you need a simple essay, a research paper, or a term paper. That made me doubt the quality of works one can get on Essaylib.

Quality of Uploaded Papers

As I suspected, the paper I got was poorly written, with mistakes in grammar and formatting. Since I decided not to pay more for an advanced or ENL writer and see what their standard writers are capable of, it was done by someone who does not have a sufficient level of English proficiency.

I managed to get a revision, although not as soon as I wanted, and it somewhat improved the state of things. Still, I would not recommend ordering the more complex papers here. The one I got could pass for a high school, and even then getting the highest grade would not be a guarantee.

Support for Students

There are a couple of Essaylib contact phone numbers, as well as an email address and a live chat. I was satisfied with the answers a company representative provided me with via chat she was helpful and friendly. However, if you will need to get help on Sunday, you’re on your own, the customer support is not working that day.

Essay-lib: Extra Offers

When placing an order, you can also opt for some additional services, like getting comments and notes on your paper, copy of sources, or progressive delivery (only for papers worth at least $200).

For $5, you can also view 3 random pages previously done by the writer assigned to your order. If you don’t like what you see, you can change the writer up to three times on one order. To me, this is a robbery, as you either have to blindly rely on the writer a company assigns or pay to see the examples of his/her work.

There’s also a free Essaylib plagiarism checker, but there’s a limit on usage, and I would not rely on it anyway. I blatantly copied a couple of texts from some sites, and the tool failed to detect any plagiarism in them. There’s even a remark that Essaylib does not guarantee accurate results with it, so I really don’t know what the point of having it on the site is.

Short overview

The vague idea of writing EssayLib review turned into a strong intention when I received over twenty requests from my readers. This inspired me to start my research, and from the first moments, I got mixed impressions. EssayLib has been working since about 2008, and it has 450 writers who specialize in over 70 different subjects. Such diversity is great because it means that you’ll be able to find a specialist you need in whatever discipline you’re studying. After this, a series of contradictions came. Website looks too bland, but prices are low; revisions and refunds are present, but confidentiality policies are problematic. If you’re interested in details and essay quality analysis, carry on reading and see if this company is what you’d like to hire!

First Insights About EssayLib

Whenever I write my paper reviews for my audience, I start with the basics. I was curious to see what design a website with the name EssayLib had chosen, but when I visited it, I felt underwhelmed. The running lines with greetings look novel, but there is virtually no design itself. I saw no memorable logo, no interesting color combination — everything was grayish and there was too much text on the homepage. My EssayLib.com review didn’t start on a positive note, and it grew worse when I realized that content on its platform is just as bland and it has multiple mistakes. Sentences sound complicated, redundant, and grammatically flawed in too many places for them to be an accident. Here is an example of one sentence: “The number of these assignments is often overwhelming for their complexity grows as they move through school.” The first half sounds all right, but what’s up with the second one? How can assignments move through school? It is evident that the writer made a mistake and managers didn’t care enough to amend it.

EssayLib reviews posted on the website look too generic and untrustworthy, but there is enough information about everything. You could learn how much you might have to pay, what services are available, whether revisions and money-back features exist, and how your privacy is protected. The box with 24/7 online chat is also nearby. I couldn’t decide whether the website has more positive or negative sides, so I chose to settle on the middle rating. Managers should pay more attention to what content they produce.

essaylib interface

Services to Order and Samples to Read

Is EssayLib good at catering to different types of clients?  Mostly yes. It specializes in three major types of services: academic writing, programming, as well as calculations. In a way, it focuses on technical side of studies, though students who need assistance with creative tasks will get it, too. This is not a company with an  application essay writing service for a specialty, but it provides this and more options. The only drawback is that I didn’t find editing or proofreading. If you need them, don’t rush to close the tab: just pick “other” in the list with variants and explain what you want. This should work.

What I disliked was the complete absence of tools like  concluding paragraph generator and free samples. This company has over a decade of experience — it had ample opportunities to diversify its base and collect free essays for students. Such samples are a sign that managers care about keeping their platform helpful for everyone, not simply paying customers. Not finding even one essay example was disappointing… although after seeing the flawed website content, maybe not so much.

Refunds, Revisions, and Privacy: Are You Protected?

Reviews of EssayLib are vague about policies, and it’s sad because it means that students don’t pay enough attention to what the company promises them. Since my evaluations are always all-encompassing, I’ll gladly cover this aspect since you need to know this information. The company offers revisions only within 7 days after essay submission. This is tough since you might not know whether the paper is good enough — it might take your professor longer to assess it. Refunds have even shorter terms, and privacy policies are downright rage-inducing. EssayLib has detailed descriptions of its terms, there is no denying it, but if you read them, you’ll see that it doesn’t protect its clients much. It shares its data with numerous third parties for various purposes, and it is not responsible for what they do with this information. It might also obtain info about you from other sources, which worries me a lot.

Work of Customer Support Team

Contacting EssayLib.com customer support is not easy because the first message you see is the offer to share your order number. If you don’t have it, it might discourage you from proceeding. But don’t let it stop you: I still messaged these guys and got a positive response. They are pleasant, welcoming, and they explain everything. They answer any questions quickly and help you make your way through this website.

Quality Analysis as the Center of Essay Lib Review

I ordered a paper from these writers because I wanted to make my review wholesome. It’s useless to analyze benefits & drawbacks without an actual client experience, so I took extra care to come across as one. I placed an order for an essay of 4 pages with a 2-week deadline. My topic was a literature review on Nursing, and I paid $60 for it. This is an average price for such work. I hoped my writer wouldn’t have problems following my requirements since the idea was simple, but alas, this wasn’t the case.

Reviews of EssayLib seem positive, but I only relate to the part about timely delivery. True, the writer submitted their work on time and I easily downloaded it, but when I began to read it, I went speechless. This was the opposite of what I expected! Professional literature review doesn’t merely list sources and offers their summaries. It provides analysis, builds links between sources, shows what unites them and what sets them apart. None of it was present in my paper. It felt like the writer copied info from Wikipedia, rephrased it a bit, and put it all into an essay. The paper also had over 100 language issues — some parts were barely readable. I was so disappointed that I didn’t even ask for a revision. My order was a failure.

Placing an Order by Yourself: How Hard Is It?

Another thing most EssayLib reviews fail to discuss is the process of order placement. It looks simple, but it has its problems. I’ll mention them here so that you have your warning.

  • Click ‘buy now.’ This will take you to the order form.
  • Fill it with details. Select type of paper, deadline, level, size, and other nuances. Everything is detailed and clear, but there is a problem. The company refuses to allow clients to order high school level for most subjects. You can see a confirmation on a screenshot. As a result, you pay more than you might have been planning on.
  • Choose extra features. I’ll discuss them in detail later, but be sure you look at the list when placing orders. There might be something there you’d like to pick.
  • Create an account. This is a continuation of a previous step. Provide your data and create your account.
  • Pay for your order. Choose the method you prefer and submit the funds to pay your writer. Wait for them to complete your order and read your essay.

How Much Does an Essay Cost Here?

EssayLib offers low prices for its services. They fall into the average market sector and this is good news for those who want  cheap coursework help as they are on a tight budget. I liked the company’s chosen approach. If you choose to hire it, you won’t have to overpay. Have a look at this table: these are the smallest prices. They’ll increase if you choose overly short deadlines, longer papers, or more complex tasks.

EssayLib pricing

More Comments on Writers

Another fact EssayLib reviews never mention is writers. Remember that list of extra features clients could get when placing their order I was talking about?  One, in particular, shocked me. You can pay 30% more for a writer who is a native speaker. That’s insane! Most respectable companies employ only native speakers, and no one requires extra payments for this.  Writers are also separated into groups, from basic to “top.” Such division is harmful. I didn’t select these features and I ended up with a person who lacked any professionalism.

Revising Your Essay

As I mentioned, such an option exists. Clients have seven days for placing a request, and they should apply to operators or managers for this. I strived to create a detailed EssayLib review, but after seeing my paper, I decided against ordering revision. I think that companies need to show perfect performance from the start, without engaging in a lottery based on which writer might manage to create a good paper.

More Features for Students

This company has no samples or writing tools. As I’ve stated in my review of EssayLib already, this is a negative sign. But it offers some paid features that clients might find interesting. They could ask for ‘smart’ writing with explanations about the structure and ideas the writer used, demand a copy of sources, or check samples of their writer’s work. You could also ask for progressive delivery and pay in installments, but only for large projects. Unfortunately, all of these cost money.

Judging EssayLib Reviews

I looked forward to getting to this section because it astonished me. Let me remind you that EssayLib has been working for over a decade. I expected to find a lot of reviews, and I checked three most popular platforms for this. My findings are not inspiring.

Nothing on this website. No clients reviewed the company here.

Again, there are no EssayLib.com reviews. Some comments are present for another company with a similar name.

No comments from anyone.

EssayLib client testimonials

No student wanted to share their opinions online, but — surprise! — the website itself has a ton of them. They are all ridiculously generic and similar, and this creates doubts about their authenticity.

Social Media

Nothing for EssayLib. It’s like it doesn’t exist.

Is EssayLib legit?

Mostly yes. This company has solid writing experience, though it hasn’t gained enough reviews from clients to be considered legit. It’s operating on a legal level, and using its services doesn’t break the law.

Is EssayLib safe?

No, its confidentiality policies are pretty bad. This company could easily share information about you with various third parties you wouldn’t even know about.

Is EssayLib reliable?

There is not a single answer here since every person has their own experience. Based on my own, these writers aren’t reliable. They can fail you when you expect it least.

Is EssayLib scam?

No, this company operates steadily by trying to follow its client's requests. It won’t steal your money and disappear into nowhere — you’ll find it exactly where it was even if you want to complain about something.

Additional Features

Payment methods.

Nothing to complain about here but nothing to praise too. Got an average looking work, with some errors and off-topic paragraphs. Still better than nothing :)

at some point you guys were early with your deliveries but now you don’t even care about client's deadlines…

rates aren't flexible like they should be

I had high hopes for the essay writing service I used, but I was disappointed with the poor quality of the research. The sources used were outdated and unreliable, and the paper lacked depth and analysis.

If the delivery was fast I would have given you a high score, but I'm sorry...

Prices seem a little high to me

AP English (Moline High School) - Beloved: Welcome and Library Basics

  • Welcome and Library Basics
  • Databases and Journals
  • Web Resources
  • Slides and Videos

Hello and Welcome!

We're glad you're here! Andrea Anderson, Cathy Cranston, and Rita Soenksen are happy to help you get started this morning! Please feel welcome to ask us questions as we go.

We understand that you're working on an essay assignment which involves selecting a prompt from the list provided by your teacher. You need at least two secondary sources which we will focus on finding today!

To get started, we're going to use the university's library catalog, InfoHawk+ , to find resources - just like you would use Destiny Discover to search your school library. Not every single thing in our collection is cataloged in InfoHawk+ but it is a great place to start!

General Research Tips

  • Generate a list of your search terms  and  any synonyms .
  • Search for each term in  InfoHawk+  and our databases . Look at the subjects that are listed with interesting resources.
  • If searching for a phrase, insert quotation marks around the phrase.
  • If you find a resource that looks interesting, look at the Subjects listed for that item. It may give you terms you can add to your search! You can click on them to find things cataloged with that term.
  • Change your results by using the words AND, OR, NOT in your search, like this: oppression AND Beloved AND Toni Morrison.
  • Limit your search by a date range if you only want results from certain years.
  • If you need a peer-reviewed , scholarly, or academic article (lots of words for the same idea!), select "Peer-reviewed journal" from the left side of InfoHawk+. (Some databases have a peer-reviewed filter as well!)
  • Try your search terms in multiple databases .
  • Look at the footnotes and bibliography of scholarly articles and dissertations - they can lead you to related sources!
  • InfoHawk+ can generate a citation for resources. Click on the large quotation mark at the bottom of the record and copy it into a document. Always double check them for accuracy!
  • The first sources that you find may not be the best. Keep looking!

How to Read an LC Call Number

When you locate a book in InfoHawk+, you'll need to take note of a few things in order to find it in the Library.

Library description of Let America be America again and other poems by Langston Hughes

  • this is a BOOK in print/paper form (as opposed to an "ebook" which would be located online)
  • it is Available (which means it should be sitting on the shelf as opposed to already checked out by someone else)
  • It is located in the Main Library (as opposed to any of our other campus libraries)
  • it is in the "Stacks" which is another way to say it is on a bookshelf
  • there is a call number that tells you the location in the library
  • We   use a different system than what you are used to in your high school library - but don't worry, we can help you find what you are looking for or you can ask anyone shelving books for help too!

How to locate a book by its call number

image of blue book spine with call number listed in 4 short lines and image of computer with call number as one long line of digits

When you are looking for a print book in our libraries, always start with the beginning of the call number. Books are arranged alphabetically starting with this. For example, all PR call numbers are together, after PP and before PS, and all P’s come after all combinations of N and before all combinations of Q, like this:

P, PA, PB . . . PP, PR, PS . . . Q, QA, QB

When books have identical letter combinations, look to the number line next. Books are ordered using  whole numbers  on this part. For example:

PR1    PR206    PR1056    PR6037     PR6209

When the beginning combinations of letters and numbers are identical, next look at the part after the decimal point. Books are first ordered alphabetically and then arranged by  decimal numbe r (not whole number.) The following call numbers are in correct order:

PR6037.A47  PR6037.A8   PR6037.A86  PR6037.E222

If there are more letters and numbers that follow, repeat the pattern of looking at the letters alphabetically, and the numbers as a decimal number.

LC Call Number Ranges

PS 3563.O8749... Morrison, Toni

PS 3563.O785... Morrison, Toni -- Criticism and interpretation

Search Term Suggestions

  • Morrison, Toni -- Beloved
  • Morrison, Toni -- criticism and interpretation
  • African Americans -- Folklore
  • African American folk tales
  • Morrison, Toni -- Beloved AND community
  • "Self-preservation in literature" AND Beloved
  • Sethe Suggs
  • Beloved Toni Morrison criticism
  • autonomy in literature AND Beloved AND Toni Morrison
  • slavery in literature AND Beloved AND Toni Morrison
  • oppression AND Beloved AND Toni Morrison
  • symbolism AND Beloved AND Toni Morrison
  • Beloved -- Toni Morrison -- history

Uri Berliner, NPR editor who criticized the network of liberal bias, says he's resigning

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

April 17, 2024 / 12:21 PM EDT / CBS News

Uri Berliner, a senior editor at National Public Radio who had been suspended from his job after claiming the network had "lost America's trust" by pushing progressive views while suppressing dissenting opinions, said he is resigning from the broadcaster.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in his resignation letter to NPR CEO Katherine Maher, and which he posted in part on X, the former Twitter. "I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

My resignation letter to NPR CEO @krmaher pic.twitter.com/0hafVbcZAK — Uri Berliner (@uberliner) April 17, 2024

Berliner's resignation comes eight days after he published an  essay  in the Free Press that caused a firestorm of debate with his allegations that NPR was suppressing dissenting voices. In response to his critique, some conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, called on the government to "defund" the organization.

Maher, who became NPR's CEO in March, wrote a staff memo a few days after publication of Berliner's essay addressing his criticisms of the organization's editorial process. Among Berliner's claims are that NPR is failing to consider other viewpoints and that it is fixated on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

"Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful and demeaning," Maher wrote.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues also took issue with the essay, with "Morning Edition" host Steve Inskeep  writing on his Substack  that the article was "filled with errors and omissions."

"The errors do make NPR look bad, because it's embarrassing that an NPR journalist would make so many," Inskeep wrote.

Berliner's suspension, which occurred Friday, was  reported  by NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik. NPR declined to comment to CBS News about Berliner's resignation. "NPR does not comment on individual personnel matters," a spokesperson said.

Aimee Picchi is the associate managing editor for CBS MoneyWatch, where she covers business and personal finance. She previously worked at Bloomberg News and has written for national news outlets including USA Today and Consumer Reports.

Leaving CNN Was How I Found My Voice

By Brooke Baldwin

“I want to punch you in the face.”

Yes, those words actually came out of my mouth. Like, out loud. A couple months ago. I’m slightly embarrassed to admit I was talking to my loving partner, Peter. He had just flown across the country and was set to wake up with me at four-something in the morning so that he could accompany me to my appearance on Good Morning America. I was going back on national TV for the first time since I’d signed off from my CNN show. I would be talking about the debut of my new Netflix show, The Trust . This was a big deal. In many ways, it felt like a rebirth. But that night before, I hadn’t been in a celebratory mood.

I was pissed off. I felt violent. I felt like I was going to explode. I am now in the process of understanding why, and this deep knowing has enabled me to change everything in my life.

I am not an angry person. Or maybe I am. There I go, silencing myself again.

When I signed off from CNN Newsroom on April 16, 2021, I couldn’t tell the whole truth. I wasn’t allowed to—and probably still am not. But I’m now on the other side of a profound life moment, of my unraveling.

This story really begins during my senior year of college, when my mother and I drove up to a strange house about a half hour from where I grew up in Atlanta. I was 21. Outside the house was my father’s silver Porsche. Inside the house was my father, with a woman who was not my mother. I reached for the car door to run into the house, to do or say I don’t know what. With my leg dragging out the passenger door, I screamed at my mother to stop the car and let me out. Instead she sped away, the passenger door slamming shut. Just recently, a friend told me my mom saved me that day: Had I gotten out of that car, I would have spent the rest of my life trying to unsee what I’d seen.

For years I watched my mother keep her mouth shut. I held on to that secret and said nothing about, or to, my father. This would be just the beginning of carrying bigger secrets and allowing myself to be muzzled —or rather, as I’m now learning, muzzling myself.

Ironic (or not) that I chose a career in TV journalism, which saw me wear a microphone to amplify the voiceless for a living. Problem was, I didn’t use my own. I see it all so clearly now: I rarely spoke up for myself.

CNN was always the dream. For 10 years it put me in millions of living rooms, allowing me to cover everything from the White House to school shootings to the pandemic. I became known for giving you the news, straight up, with dignity and compassion. And—after the 10 years I spent climbing the ranks of local news to get to the big leagues—I was good at it.

I was living my dream and saying yes to everything. YES to oil spills. YES to elections. Coal mine disasters. Hurricanes. Escaped inmates. Gun legislation. Yes to everything, yes to everyone.

I never said no. There would have always been someone hungrier and more telegenic if I had.

Behind the scenes, my yes-girl behavior was starting to snowball. CNN moved me from Atlanta to New York, but my producing team stayed behind; we would work long-distance. I could feel my tether to my executive producer begin to fray.

It wasn’t always like this. In fact, those first few years working together were pretty great. We bounced ideas off each other. We got excited about similar news stories. I adored his wife and kids—and he always knew whom I was dating. Our relationship was almost as sibling-like as it was collegial.

But after my move, our working relationship started to take a drastic turn. My producer made me feel as though I couldn’t do heavy-hitting interviews without him. Or, maybe, I allowed him to make it feel like I couldn’t do heavy-hitting interviews without him. The word gaslighting has become so cliché, but that’s what it felt like. Manipulation. Bullying.

Anyone who’s ever tried long-distance in any kind of relationship, romantic or professional, knows it wears on you. My producer was read-in on the news at all times—it was his job. When you work at any cable news network, email comes in fast and furiously. Sometimes that meant I would accidentally miss his emails. And I started to notice that if I didn’t respond to those emails right away, he would go dark.

Even worse, sometimes he would go dark during my live broadcasts. In front of hundreds of thousands of people. There would be days when I’d get on set, clip on my microphone, and slip my earpiece into my right ear. No “hello.” No check-in. Instead, I’d be greeted by someone less seasoned.

With live TV, there should always be a palpable sense of “I’ve got you” —which goes both ways between anchor and executive producer. I had to learn how to rely on myself and others to move through the show without him.

Sometimes he needed to communicate urgently with me—for instance, if he had gotten word there’d be a press conference and wanted me to know I’d need to ad-lib coming out of it. But depending on his mood, he might refuse to actually speak into my ear, instead writing me notes on the teleprompter during commercial breaks.

How Céline Dion’s Bold Wedding Day Fashion Landed Her In the Hospital

By Kase Wickman

I got into a bad habit. I never picked up the phone and said something—like really said something. Not to him. And I didn’t report up the chain of command. I was the good girl. Good girls smile, are grateful for our jobs, and keep our mouths shut. We definitely don’t speak up.

Everything changed for me the day in 2015 when Donald Trump came down that escalator. In the years that followed, I was not only pushed out of alignment with what news had become and how I was being told to cover it; I was also changed. I got curious about the legions of women who, as a direct result of that election, finally decided to speak up.

In 2018, I started researching my book, Huddle , about the collective power of women. I spent weekends during one of the most insane news cycles of our lifetime interviewing Black women judges in Texas; a queer chef from San Francisco; military badasses turned congresswomen—athletes, teachers, activists, mothers. Women who knew real marginalization and discrimination. I’m a privileged white woman, and yet that’s when I started to find my voice.

“No, I don’t want to cover that today.”

“No, I’d like to interview her instead of him.”

“No, I will not be spoken to like that.”

Despite my own narrative that I “needed” my producer, I knew I needed to figure it out without him. And I knew that I could.

In November 2019, I finally walked into my boss’s office. I told Jeff Zucker, the former president of CNN, that I wanted my producer off my team. I didn’t want him to be punished—just moved to another anchor to start anew. A male colleague had made a similar request with success. My request? Denied.

Little did I know, this was the beginning of the end for me.

A few weeks later, I got called back into the boss’s office with my then agent, who’d prepared me with something like, “Brooke, your boss is furious at you. What have you done?!” I’d had a lovely relationship with Jeff up until this point. I’d even danced with him at my wedding. Now I found myself standing in his office dumbfounded, but prepared to defend myself and my integrity.

I couldn’t help but wonder: Why was I even sitting there? Why did I suddenly feel like the third wheel with my executive producer and my boss? Had I inadvertently kicked a hornet’s nest? All because I had gone over my producer’s head to the big boss? It didn’t make sense. I wasn’t accusing this guy of any kind of misconduct. Just as I’d told Jeff, our working relationship had run out of track.

Instead of addressing me right away, my boss engaged in the longest five-minute conversation of my life—not with me, but with my agent. The topic: whether Anderson Cooper, another of her clients, was happy with the view out of his new office.

I stood there waiting to hear my fate.

What the fucking fuck.

Textbook power move. I just stood there. Paralyzed. In fear? In shame?

Then Jeff turned to me and threatened, “I could give your show to someone in Washington tomorrow. ” [ Long pause ] “But I won’t…because I believe you’re the best broadcaster on this network.” He told me that I needed my executive producer and that he would not remove him.

Whiplash. Instability. Another classic play. I’d lost. Some months later, the pandemic hit. I got a severe case of COVID early, and my sickness became national news. I was getting alerts about myself. Thousands of viewers reached out to me and showed me so much love. But what they didn’t know was that, in addition to my health, I was fighting for my own self-respect.

To summarize the next year: With very little explanation (read: some excuse about “not enough available control rooms” to produce my show), my boss yanked me off the air for the two months leading up to and including Election Day 2020. When people understandably started asking why I was “taking vacation” during such a crucial time, I responded to a random, buried comment on Instagram: “Not my choice.”

My three little words made news around the globe. So I got slapped again. When I got my show back, Jeff cut it in half. This time I kept my mouth shut. “Be grateful,” Jeff had once told me over lunch a year or two before, while we were in contract negotiations. “Don’t be like Megyn Kelly. Don’t you dare get bored.”

Why didn’t I leave earlier? For one thing, that little girl deep inside of me would have been disappointed. She and I, we lived in small-town West Virginia. We dated the wrong guys. We put off having kids. The hustling. We can’t quit now. We worked too hard for this. This was our dream.

CNN beat me to it. In January 2021, the morning Trump was impeached for a second time, my cell phone rang. It wasn’t my boss —rather, it was my agent.

Jeff wanted me out. No explanation. Just out. From that moment on, after I’d spent 13 years at CNN, Jeff never spoke to me again. Neither did my former executive producer, who ended up getting moved to another show for COVID-protocol reasons and then eventually promoted. (When I emailed them to let them know I’d be publishing this piece, offering each of them a chance to comment on or dispute my recollections, Jeff’s publicist responded by saying that “he wishes you all the best.” My old producer never responded.)

After 10 years: crickets. And the worst part? I had to lie to my team, my friends and family, and my viewers.

My lawyer and publicist worked hard to negotiate my exit, fighting to allow me to announce my own news on my own show. In February, I got to do exactly that. My end date was mutually agreed upon—coincidentally coming less than two weeks after I would be publishing my first book. Eventually, I did an interview with the Ms. magazine podcast during which I called out gender inequality at CNN. Another phone call from my agent. Another “Jeff is going nuclear.” This time he was apparently threatening to yank me off the air. My response: “But he’s already yanking me off the air!” My then agent: “He is threatening to yank you even sooner.” He didn’t.

Through my final days at CNN, I was so allergic to the idea of that man that instead of risking running into him on the way to the bathroom, I contemplated peeing in a Gatorade bottle in my office.

Everything was upside down.

On my last day at the network, after I said my goodbyes, I slipped out the literal side door of the building, and of my dream.

On my way out, the only CNN face I saw was a security guard’s. Masked, hands trembling, Anthony stood there clutching a shoebox. He’d bought me a pair of Air Jordans as a goodbye. I hugged him and wept.

No cheesy plaque. No Champagne. No send-off party.

Just quiet.

Life is unfair. People are shitty. Bosses are bullies. This is not news. In the hierarchy of giving a shit, I didn’t think my story, my thousand little cuts, amounted to much.

It’s taken me nearly three years to remove the blinders, feel the anger, welcome the fear, and recognize that in all my yesses, in all my silence, in all my enabling, the person who betrayed me the most was me.

I wanted to obey. I wanted to please. I wanted to be the good girl. I was afraid they’d let me go—joke’s on me.

It starts in childhood. We want approval—from our parents, then our lovers, then our bosses. I wanted the people who had certain control over me to want me so that I could get what I wanted.

It’s a transaction and it’s a gamble, and the house always wins.

A former colleague of mine in her 20s knew what I was going through at work. She confessed to me years later that she was aghast and afraid: If it could happen to me, how would it not happen to her?

Which brings me back to wanting to punch my man in the face. Why was I so angry?

Because all of the truths were flooding into my mind the night before GMA. The muzzling. The charade. My childhood. My accountability.

I didn’t hit Peter, of course. Instead, he threw his arms around me, showing me how to feel seen and safe—and I wept. I wept for my mother. I wept for the versions of a woman I’d been throughout my life. I wept for the woman I was finally becoming.

So this is my confession. I’m calling myself out. And it feels powerful.

As for my family? My mother eventually left my father. She has found love with a man, a kind of love she had never known. And I don’t speak to my father, who is remarried. I wish him well.

Part of my own unraveling meant I became a believer in divorce. Including my divorce, so to speak, from CNN. Like my marriage ending, it was painful. I miss being a vessel for information and clarity and news—the good and the bad. I miss my audience. But I’m experiencing a rebirth. As with a forest fire, you can burn out the debris and foster new growth.

And it turns out that once you find your voice, you can’t unfind it. You can still say yes, as long as it’s using that voice.

Yes to hosting a social-experiment show on Netflix.

Yes to becoming a filmmaker, my own storyteller.

Yes to getting divorced.

Yes to starting the fuck over.

Yes to finding new love.

Yes to chopping your hair.

Remove your armor.

Burn the boats.

Unraveling. A funny word. I always took it to mean “coming apart,” but it also can mean “getting to the truth.”

Now I realize it’s both.
