Exceptional Student Education

Parental choice options, special assignment requests , special attendance permit (sap) - for out-of-county residents.

If approved for school attendance in the District, the student will be assigned to the requested school, provided the school has available space and it is in the best interest of the educational program at the school.  Parents are responsible for safely transporting their child to and from the assigned school in a timely manner. Students granted a Special Attendance Permit may remain at the assigned school through the highest grade. There is no longer a requirement to re-apply annually.

Please note:

*  A student on suspension or who has been expelled cannot be approved for transfer to the District.

*  No student residing in the district may be displaced by a student from another district.

 Additionally, the following preferential treatment will be provided through the Special Assignment Request and Special Attendance Permit processes;

  • dependent children of active-duty military personnel whose movement resulted from military orders;
  • students who have been relocated due to a foster care placement into another school zone;
  • students who move to another school zone due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation or divorce, or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent.

DPS offers a variety of choices to suit nearly every kind of student. We offer traditional calendar schools, Montessori schools, magnet schools with special programming, magnet schools with a year-round calendar, and CTE pathways programs. Some of our high schools are aligned with the area colleges and universities and share courses. STEP ONE: ELIGIBILITY

STEP TWO: IDENTIFY YOUR SCHOOL

  • Identify which school is your base school using the School Locator tool , or call 919-560-2059 . This tool will help identify your base school assignment and if your family resides in a magnet assignment zone. Click here to learn more about the DPS Magnet Program process.

New to Louisville? Here's how to sign your kid up for school

student assignment office near me

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Moving to Louisville? Got a soon-to-be kindergartner? Switching to public schools?

Jefferson County Public Schools , the state's largest school district, has more than 150 schools. How kids get assigned to those schools is complicated, and the district is in the process of overhauling its school boundaries.

Here's how to navigate the registration process to sign your child up for school:

Figure out your district

Jefferson County has two public school districts: JCPS and Anchorage Independent.

Your address decides where you need to enroll. If your kid is in eighth grade or younger and you live in Anchorage, you're likely in Anchorage Independent . High school students who live in Anchorage attend JCPS high schools.

This guide focuses on JCPS' registration process.

Farmer Elementary: JCPS elementary teacher wins 'Oscar of teaching' in Milken Educator Awards

Fill out forms

Students who are new to JCPS need to register online before they can apply to a school.

The registration form is available online at https://apps.jefferson.kyschools.us/StudentAssignment/LandingPad/Register.aspx . Or call the district's student assignment office at (502) 485-6250.

Caretakers will need to provide a proof of address as part of the registration process. It can be provided online, taken in person to a JCPS school or emailed to [email protected].

A proof of address may include:

  • a recent water or electric bill (from the last three months)
  • a paycheck or pay stub
  • a lease or house contract

Time to apply

Once a student is registered with the district, now it is time to apply for schools .

Families will receive an activation key to access the school application after they register and their address is verified.

Do your research

Don't assume that the school right next door is going to be the one your child is assigned to.

JCPS offers several programs to which you can apply, including magnet schools or optional programs. You can check out your options for elementary schools , middle schools and high schools through the district's Choices handbooks .

Elementary schools use a cluster system in JCPS. Each area of the county is assigned to a cluster of five to eight schools. Families rank the schools in their cluster and the district will try to match students with their top choice. Elementary students can also apply to magnet schools and programs.

Background: Here's how JCPS' cluster system works

Middle and high schools do not have a cluster system. Students can either be accepted to a magnet program or assigned to the school associated with their home address .

Not sure what cluster you're in or what your assigned schools are? Try JCPS' School Finder tool .

Need more information? Have a question? Email JCPS' student assignment office at [email protected] or call (502) 485-6250.

The Hardship Transfer Application window was opened on January 1, 2024 and closed on February 29, 2024.

Hardship Transfer Applications

Applications for a hardship transfer are reviewed annually by the Student Assignment Office. Through this process, parents can seek a transfer for medical reasons, curriculum differences, child care situations or if they are an employee of the school system. Parents may also request the renewal of an existing hardship transfer. The Hardship Transfer Policy as well as the Hardship Transfer Guidelines (see below) will be used to determine student eligibility.

Hardship Transfer Guidelines

Students who have missed schools in excess of the following number of days will be automatically denied a hardship transfer. Students currently attending a school on an approved hardship, but failing to maintain a satisfactory attendance record will be subject to revocation of the existing transfer.

  • Student has been tardy to school 15 or more times;
  • Student has been absent from school 5 or more days, unexcused.
  • If absences are excused or medical but exceed 5 days, parents must provide written explanation of why the absences occurred.

Students who have not maintained satisfactory behavior in school are not granted permission to transfer under hardship policy. Students currently attending a school on an approved hardship, but failing to maintain satisfactory behavior will be subject to revocation of the existing transfer.

  • Elementary school students who have been involved in 5 or more incidents;
  • Elementary school students who have received more than 3 days Out of School Suspension;
  • Middle or High school students who have received more than 5 days Out of School Suspension or In-School Suspension.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration

Gaston county schools conducting online registration for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten.

It’s time for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration in Gaston County Schools! Because of the coronavirus pandemic, parents are asked to complete the registration process online.

■  Kindergarten Registration For kindergarten, a child must be five years old on or before August 31, 2020. Parents should register online:  www.gaston.k12.nc.us/ kindergartenregistration

Parents/guardians must provide the following to register for kindergarten:

▪ Birth certificate or proof of parentage ▪ Valid ID of parent/guardian who is registering the child ▪ Two proofs of current address (such as power, water, gas, cable, internet, or landline telephone bills, lease, or mortgage) ▪ An up-to-date immunization/shot record ▪ Health assessment form completed on or after August 26, 2019 by a certified health care professional

Kindergarten registration continues throughout the summer, but parents are encouraged to go ahead and register now, which helps our elementary schools with planning for next year.

■  Pre-Kindergarten Registration For pre-kindergarten, a child must be four years old on or before August 31, 2020. Parents should register online:  www.gaston.k12.nc.us/ prekindergarten

Parents/guardians must provide the following to register for pre-kindergarten:

▪ Birth certificate or proof of parentage ▪ Valid ID of parent/guardian who is registering the child ▪ Two proofs of current address (such as power, water, gas, cable, internet, or landline telephone bills, lease, or mortgage) ▪ An up-to-date immunization/shot record ▪ Health assessment form completed on or after August 26, 2019 by a certified health care professional ▪ Proof of income for the parent/guardian living in the home with the child (a recent check stub is preferred).

Pre-kindergarten is offered at various school and community locations across Gaston County. Parents are reminded that registering a child for pre-kindergarten does not guarantee that the child will be placed in the program. The district has limited pre-kindergarten space at each location. The deadline to apply for pre-kindergarten is June 15.

Additional information about kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration is available on the Gaston County Schools website,  www.gaston.k12.nc.us  – click the “How to Enroll” tab.

Parents may call the Student Assignment Office for information about kindergarten registration, (704) 810-7284.  For pre-kindergarten information, parents may call the Pre-Kindergarten Office, (704) 866-6124.
