Creating a Turnitin Assignment

To create a Turnitin Assignment open the course home page, after logging in as a tutor click the 'Turn editing on' button. Select 'Turnitin Assignment' from the 'Add an activity...' drop down menu.

General Turnitin Assignment settings:

  • Enter a Name for the Turnitin Assignment. This will display as a link for students, so make it intuitive.
  • Type a Summary . This will display for students at the top of the assignment page.
  • Select the 'Submission Type'. The first option is 'File Upload' (default). The second option is 'Text Submission' which will upload pasted text. The third is 'Any Submission Type' which allows either of those formats.
  • Set the Number Of Parts (separate uploads) you want students to submit that assignment. For each you will set a Start Date , Due Date and Post Date a bit later.
  • For Maximum File Size for submissions, the Site Upload Limit is often best. This will display to students on their submission page.
  • Set Anonymous Marking if applicable.
  • Allow Submission Of Any File Type if students are expected to upload types of file which Turnitin cannot checked for originality.
  • Display Originality Reports To Students - if set to Yes the Originality Report generated by Turnitin is available to the student. Improve students' academic writing by allowing them to view their Originality Reports and supporting them to interpret it - ideally before the Due Date.
  • Grade Display - set whether students should see their grade as a fraction or a percentage.
  • Auto Refresh Grades / Scores - set automatically sync changes to grades. If you have a very large cohort and this slows you down, you can set to Manual (but then you need to remember to refresh).
  • Set These Values As Assignment Defaults - this only applies to assignments you set up under your own account, and may be helpful if you have many similar assignments to create.

Grade settings

  • Set a Type - Point is a number out of a Maximum Grade. Scale allows you to choose from any grade Scales set by your institution e.g. Fail / First. None allows you to give feedback only.
  • Grade Category - if you've set these up in your Moodle Gradebook, then you can select one here.
  • Grade To Pass - if you have a threshold, setting it here will display passes and fails as green and red in the Gradebook.

Assignment Part settings

  • Name - make it clear what you expect students to upload to this part. If you're only expecting a single upload, then something like 'Your work' may be more intuitive than Part 1.
  • Start Date - the earliest date students can submit.
  • Due Date - the deadline. If you have enabled late submissions any late submission will appear in red.
  • Post Date - the date that marks and feedback are returned to students. If you are using anonymous marking, then names are revealed to tutors at this point. Two things to keep in mind about the Post Date: one is that it can be changed (as long as it hasn't already passed) and the other is that you don't want to reveal marks and feedback until the entire cohort has been marked. You can set a Post Date further in the future than you need, but be aware students can see this date so you need to liaise with them separately.

Originality Report option settings

  • Allow Submissions after the Due Date - decide whether you wish to allow students to submit after the Due Date. Those submissions will be clearly marked as late.
  • Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed) - Originality reports are created immediately and students may not resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.
  • Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until the due date) - The Originality Report is generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes up until the due date. Turnitin will require students to wait 24 hours between viewing each subsequent Originality Report. Only the latest submission is available to the student and instructor. When the due date passes the originality report is regenerated and student submissions within the same assignment are included in the comparison which may result in a change to the originality report similarity index. Resubmissions are not allowed after the due date.
  • Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until the due date) - Originality reports for submissions are generated on the due date. Resubmissions are allowed up until the due date.
  • Store Student Papers - choose whether student papers are stored in the Turnitin Student Paper Repository for comparison against future submissions. Choose 'No Repository' for particularly confidential or sensitive student work, or where you are testing the system. Most common option: Standard Repository
  • Check Against Stored Student Papers - if set to Yes this includes checks against Turnitin's Student Paper Repository in the Originality Reports for papers. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  • Check Against Internet - determines whether submissions are checked against Turnitin's Internet Repository. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  • Check against journals, periodicals and publications determines whether submissions are checked against Turnitin's journal, periodical and publication sources. If set to No, the similarity index percentage may decrease.
  • Exclude bibliography - this setting allows the instructor to choose to exclude text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, or references sections of student papers from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden later in individual Originality Reports.
  • Exclude Quoted Material - allows the instructor to exclude text appearing in double quotation marks (i.e. " ") from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports. Note that this setting will not allow misquotes to be identified, and note also that single quotation marks cannot be excluded.
  • Exclude Small Matches - allows the instructor to choose to exclude matches that are lower than a certain number of words (determined by the instructor) from being considered when generating Originality Reports. This setting can be overridden in individual Originality Reports.

Grademark option settings

  • Attach A Rubric To This Assignment - to use a marking grid, enable it here (see Turnitin guidance on setting it up).

Advanced Turnitin Assignment settings:

The rest of the settings are not particular to Turnitin, so we won't cover them here.

Once you have selected all of the required options click 'Save and Display'. The assignment's summary page displays with options to configure each assignment part in more detail.

Further settings for a Turnitin assignment

The summary screen displays settings organised in three tabs which we will describe in turn.

Submission Inbox tab

When you are logged in as a Tutor you can access the student submission inbox by clicking the 'Submission Inbox' tab. Here you can edit some of the settings you previously made (and access the rest via the Update button). You can also configure a Turnitin Rubric or QuickMark set (see Turnitin guidance on these), configure how many submissions display on each page, and refresh the submissions. You can notify students who have not submitted - particularly helpful if the submissions are anonymous. Below those settings is the inbox of students' submitted work.

  • If you have set up the assignment to use groups you will see a 'groups' dropdown located at the top of the page. Selecting a group will filter out all the students in other groups (not compatible with anonymous assignments).
  • Next, you will see the title, start, due and post dates for the assignment. You can edit the dates simply by clicking on the date or the edit icon next to it. The post date is when any grades & feedback will be revealed to students and anonymous assignments will become de-anonymised
  • If you want to bulk download the assignments in either their original format or the Turnitin PDF format use the icons under the Export heading.
  • The next icons provide quick links to the Rubric Manager and the Quickmark Manager.
  • (If enabled) The next line down details any Peermark settings and provides a link to the Peermark Manager.
  • The next section of the screen displays a table of all the submissions for the assignment
  • You can control how many records you see on one page using the Show dropdown in the top left corner of the page. You can also use the Search function in the top left corner of the page if you need to search for one student.
  • If a student's Similarity report says pending, you can click on the Refresh Submissions icon at the top of the table.
  • The 'Student' column shows the name of the student (this will display anonymous if anonymous marking is enabled) The 'Similarity' column shows the percentage similarity score for the submission with a 'heat map' rectangle underneath it. If a submission is still being processed it will display 'Pending' and a grey rectangle. Note: Assignments should not usually take longer than ½ hr after submission to show the similarity report, however, at peak submission times this may take longer. If a report still says pending after several hours, please report this problem to ELE.
  • The last two icons allow you to download or delete that individual submission. Note: Submission time stamps in red have been submitted after the deadline.

Submit on behalf of a student

You can submit on behalf of a student if necessary / permissible by selecting the Cloud-Arrow icon in their record - though this won't work if submissions are set to be anonymous.

Turnitin Tutors tab

This tab is usually only needed if you or colleagues expect to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding colleagues who need to be tutors. Difficulties bulk-downloading Turnitin inboxes are sometimes due to not being a Turnitin Tutor.

Turnitin Students tab

This tab is usually only needed if you expect students to be accessing your assignment through Turnitin's web interface i.e. independently of Moodle. Here you can add any outstanding students whose work you need to access via Moodle.

Turnitin assignments differ from regular Assignments in Moodle. Turnitin helps instructors evaluate the similarity of students’ work by comparing electronic documents to online sources and the Turnitin database. The software returns an Similarity Report which rates submitted assignments and highlights text that appears elsewhere. Faculty can have their students submit their assignments to Turnitin, or they can use it to assess suspect submissions (e.g., assignments without works cited pages, assignments without drafts, etc.).

Adding a Turnitin assignment in Moodle is a two-step process. First, you add the Turnitin assignment to your Moodle course page and edit the settings from within Moodle, you can then open the assignment and make additional settings within Turnitin.

Add a Turnitin Assignment to a Moodle course

  • Locate the section where you want a Turnitin assignment to appear. If the section is collapsed, click the arrow icon above the Section name to expand the section.
  • At the bottom of the section, click  +Add an activity or resource . The Add an activity or resource pop up will open showing a tile for each available resource or activity. Note : By default, the panel opens to All and shows all resources and activities. If you have starred favorite activities or resources, the panel will open to Starred . To only view resources, at the top of the pop-up, click Resources .

information icon

  • Select the Turnitin assignment icon or Turnitin assignment link . The Adding a new Turnitin assignment page opens.
  • Enter a title for your Turnitin assignment in the Name field (required). The name you enter will display as a link to the Turnitin assignment on your main course page.
  • To configure basic settings for the Turnitin assignment, see Configure Settings in Moodle (below).
  • Click Save and return to course to return to your main course page, or Save and display to view the assignment page.

When you add a  Turnitin assignment activity to a Moodle course, you are required to set the assignment's name, and the Submission Type . The remaining settings are optional. This section describes each setting.

  • Turnitin Assignment Name  (required) This is used as the assignment l ink on your course page.
  • Summary Enter a summary of the assignment and instructions. The Summary  will be visible to students when they click the assignment link, or you can select Display description on course page to display the Summary on your course page (best if the  Summary is very concise).
  • Any Submission Type  lets students choose to submit either a file or text entry.
  • File Upload requires that students upload a file containing their essay. Acceptable formats include PDF, Microsoft Word, and others. For the latest list of supported file formats, see Supported File Types and Size .
  • Text Submission provides students with a text box where they can type or paste in the text of their essay. This may work better for shorter submissions rather than essays that have multiple pages and have specifically formatted reference lists.
  • Number of Parts Specify whether students can submit multiple parts of their assignment, for example if they are uploading separate sections of an essay independently. This can be used for submitting multiple drafts of an essay.
  • Maximum File Size Set the maximum size of the file that students can upload.
  • Allow submission of any file type? This setting will allow any file type to be submitted. With this option set to Yes , submissions will be checked for similarity where possible, submissions will be available for download and GradeMark feedback tools will be available where possible.
  • Display Similarity Reports to Students Specify whether students can see the reports that Turnitin generates. The default is No . Note:  Instructors can  always see these reports. This setting  only determines whether a student can see the report that the instructor received for their submission which can be useful in resolving disputes on similarity of the student's work, or for draft submission to allow students to improve citations.
  • Grade Display This option sets the display mode for the grades options. Grades can be displayed as a fraction or percentage.
  • Auto Refresh Grades / Scores Specify whether grades and similarity reports will be refreshed automatically. The default is Yes, automatically refresh similarity scores and grades .
  • Set these values as assignment defaults Select this option to make the current settings default for future Turnitin assignments.
  • Grade Select the Grade Type : None - The Turnitin Assignment will be ungraded and worth no points. Point - Grade out of a simple number of maximum points. Enter the maximum possible score for the Turnitin Assignment in a Maximun grade  field. Scale - Select a preset or custom Scale from the Scale drop-down. ( See Standard & Custom grading scales in Moodle ).
  • Grade Category Select a Category in your gradebook under which you would like the Turnitin assignment to be placed. See Grade Category Options in the Moodle Gradebook  for instructions on how to create a category in your gradebook.
  • Grade to pass This setting determines the minimum grade required to pass. The value is used in activity and course completion, and in the gradebook, where pass grades are highlighted in green and fail grades in red.

Assignment Parts

By default, Turnitin assignments are composed of one part. If the assignment has more than one part (set above), each part will have its own form.

  • Name (required) A name for the assignment part. The default is Part 1 .
  • Start Date This defaults to the precise date and time the Turnitin assignment was created. Modify this if you want students to be able to start submitting their work at a later date and time.
  • Due Date This defaults to 7 days after the precise date and time at which you created the Turnitin assignment. Modify this with the actual due date you want for your assignment. Note : Students may still be able to submit their work after the Due Date if you enable Allow Submissions after the Due Date   (under Similarity Report Options, below).
  • Post Date This is the date at which your grades and feedback are made available for students to view. The default is 7 days after the precise date and time at which you created the Turnitin assignment. Modify this if you want your grades to be posted at or after your actual due date. Note : To have Turnitin and Moodle sync grades correctly you must have grades entered into Grademark BEFORE the Post Date. Any grades entered AFTER the post date must be synced individually. Instructors should set a reasonable time in which to grade student work for their Post Date.
  • Max Grades Enter the maximum points that can be earned in this part. The default is 100 . Note : In multiple part assignments, if all parts have the same Max grades value, the parts will be weighted equally in calculating the grade for the entire assignment that is recorded in the Moodle gradebook..

Similarity Report Options

  • Allow Submissions after the Due Date Set this to Yes  if you want to allow students to submit beyond the due date.
  • Generate reports immediately (students cannot resubmit) generates an Similarity Report as soon as a student makes a submission. With this option selected your students will not be able to resubmit the assignment.
  • Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date): After 3 resubmissions, reports generate after 24 hours  allows students to continuously resubmit the assignment until the due date. It may take up to 24 hours to process Similarity Reports for resubmissions.
  • Generate reports on due date (students can resubmit until due date) only generates an Similarity Report on the assignment's due date. Note : This setting allows all assignment submissions to be compared against each other when the Similarity Reports are created.
  • Store Student Papers Papers stored in the UMass Amherst dedicated databases of assignments at Turnitin  are used solely for the purpose of detecting possible plagiarism during the grading process this term and in the future. Select no repository to disable this feature. The default is Institutional Repository (Where Applicable) .
  • Check against stored student papers Select  Yes to check submissions' similarity against those stored in the Turnitin repository. Similarity reports will provide details for matches within your current and previous classes, and general information for other matches found.
  • Check against internet Select  Yes to check submissions' similarity against internet content.
  • Check against journals, periodicals and publications Select  Yes to check submissions' similarity against content from academic publications.
  • Check against Institutional Repository Select  Yes  to check against UMass' Institutional  Respository , which contains student work submitted at UMass. This is separate from  Turnitin's  databases.
  • Exclude Bibliography Select  Yes  if you would like to exclude the bibliography section of student submissions from similarity checking.
  • Exclude Quoted Material Select  Yes  if you would like Turnitin to skip over any quotes used in the student submission, as these are more likely to match works submitted elsewhere.
  • Exclude Small Matches Enter the minimum number of words (or the percentage of the essay) that need to match in order to flag a section of the student submission. This can cut down on commonly used phrases being flagged for similarity.

Grademark Options

To use a rubric for the assignment:

  • To use a rubric you have already saved, in the  Attach a rubric to this assignment  drop-down menu, select the desired rubric .
  • To build a new rubric, select Launch Rubric Manager . The  rubric editor will open.

Note: Quickmark feedback must be configured from within Turnitin (see below).

Configure due dates and other additional settings from within the Turnitin Assignment

  • On your Moodle course page, click the  Turnitin assignment to configure. The Turnitin assignment will open to the Submission Inbox .

Copying a Moodle Class

The Turnitin Moodle Direct integration is fully compatible with the Moodle course archive and restore functionality.

If you restore a Moodle course containing Turnitin assignment links from an archive into a Moodle environment configured with the Turnitin Moodle Direct integration, the restored course will by default retain its links to the Turnitin assignment it was initially linked to when it was created.

If you are restoring the archive as a backup, this may be functioning the way you intended.

If you are creating new Moodle courses from an archived version, the Moodle course reset feature would need to be used on the newly created course to break the association with the original Turnitin assignments. Stated another way, you should use the reset feature when an academic year or term has ended and you plan to re-use the Moodle course.

Only Moodle Administrators may reset a course.

Log in into your Moodle system.

Navigate to the course.

Select the reset link under the settings menu in the lower left (Administrator-level access to Moodle is needed to see this option).

When using the course reset feature there are the following options for the Turnitin activity modules :

Copy Turnitin Assignments (Create Duplicates, New Turnitin Class) - the most appropriate choice if a new copy of a course is being made.

Replace Turnitin Assignments (Replace Assignment Parts, Reuse Turnitin Class) - should be used if the same student cohort is being used but the Turnitin assignments are intended to be separate from the ones that were previously created.

Leave Turnitin Assignments Untouched - should be used if the Turnitin assignment links need to remain as they are when other Moodle course content is reset.

Related guidance

This guidance is for use when Similarity Reports are required but students submitted to an assessment type that is not integrated with Turnitin.

In Moodle 4, you can enable Turnitin on Moodle Assignments, Forums and Quiz essay questions. If you are planning on using any of these assessment types refer to the relevant guidance on enabling Turnitin within the activity.

Turnitin requires students to accept an end user agreement with Turnitin. Use of Turnitin is included as a Registration Task which students (new and returning) need to agree to as part of registering/re-registering on their programme.

  • Create Assignment with Similarity Report
  • Create Quiz guide
  • Whole forum grading

This guidance is for staff only . If you are a student and want access to Turnitin, you must speak to lecturer to check what is available on your programme.

There is no software required to use Turnitin. To get access, you must first request an account. If you have used Turnitin via Moodle, you will already have an account. To reset your password for the web version.

  • Go to the Turnitin website .
  • Alongside Forgot your password, select  Click here .
  • Input your City email address.
  • Input your last name.
  • Select Next .
  • Select Forgotten the secret answer .
  • A new password will be emailed to your City account.

If you are a member of staff and have not previously used Turnitin via Moodle, you can request an account via IT Self Service Portal . You will then receive an email directing you to access the Turnitin website and set your password. It is a requirement that you undergo a short training session before using Turnitin and you will be contacted directly to arrange a suitable time.

You can access the Turnitin website at the link below.

  • TurnitinUK.com

You can no longer upload files to Turnitin web version on behalf of unenrolled users. To stop your students receiving emails from Turnitin to activate their account and asking them to submit coursework to the web version, you must enrol students using a pseudo email address with the student’s name, module code, enrolment year and school name as an identifier e.g. [email protected] - [email protected]

Turnitin regularly updates its online guidance. Follow the links below to access their help pages.

  • To use the Turnitin web version, you first need to create a class and an assignment .
  • Create a list users with pseudo email addresses and upload these.
  • Next you will to import a zip file of coursework files  and associate each assignment with the relevant student.
  • Wait for the Similarity Reports to generate and then you can review them.

This workflow  does not work where there is more than one file per student.

Submissions are displaying a QUEUED status in Moodle assignments

Jul 27, 2021 • knowledge article, information.

The Moodle cron process is a PHP script that must run regularly in the background and that runs different scheduled tasks at regular intervals. For Turnitin specifically, there is a cronjob that is responsible for pushing submissions from Moodle through to Turnitin. If submissions within a Moodle Plagiarism Plugin assignment are showing a 'QUEUED' status, this indicates that the cron has either:

Not yet ran

Stopped working

Been blocked by something on the server

To resolve this, the Moodle administrator will need to test Turnitin connectivity and check the cron settings. The steps to test Turnitin connectivity are: Site administration > Plugins > Plagiarism > Turnitin Plagiarism plugin > Test Turnitin Connection link . If the connection to Turnitin has failed, the Moodle administrator will need to ensure that the cron is configured. The following link allows you to select your Moodle version, describes the Moodle cron and also gives information on configuring it: https://docs.moodle.org/39/en/Cron Note : It is not known if there is a default cronjob frequency setting, however, it should be dependent on the size of the system it's running on.

Update on the Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer Wizard

By Kerry, on 6 June 2024

Since the release of the Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer Wizard in March 2024, we have an important update for you. When selecting a source Moodle activity to transfer marks from, Moodle activities can now include a Grade Item or Grade Category from the Moodle Grade Book.

Previously, it was only possible to transfer marks from a single Moodle assignment, Quiz or Turnitin assignment to one or more than one assessment component in Portico.

From 6th June 2024, you will also be able to select a Grade Item  from the Moodle Grade Book to transfer marks from. This could be for another Moodle activity such as a Workshop or  Lesson , or it could be for an LTI external tool activity that has permission to add grades to the Grade Book (such as Crowdmark or H5P). Alternatively, it could be an item you have added manually.

In addition, you can transfer marks from a Grade Category . This means that if you have set up a Category in the Grade Book which has its own aggregated grade calculated from its Grade Items, you can also transfer this grade to one or more than one assessment component in Portico.

Please ensure that the Grade Item or Category meet the following criteria before completing a marks transfer:

  • The mark is numeric (letter grades are not eligible) so the Grade type should be set to “value”.
  • The maximum value is 100 .
  • The G rade display type is set to “Real” (other display types will not be recognised by Portico so the item or Category would not show up as a Source activity in the Marks Transfer Wizard).

These developments were prioritised following user feedback during the pilot earlier this year. Our next priority will be to analyse requirements for SORAs, ECs, LSAs and other special cases.

You can access guidance on how to use Marks Transfer in our Wiki , which includes short screen recordings. There is now also a short Tour on Moodle for users getting started with the tool.

If you are experiencing issues with using the Marks Transfer Wizard, please check our FAQs (which are frequently updated) and if you are still unable to resolve your issue, you should contact the Digital Education Support team at [email protected] .

For any issues with Portico data e.g. incorrect assessment or student information, please contact [email protected]

For general feedback or suggestions on future developments, please contact your Faculty Champion .
