A PhD synopsis is a detailed summary of your proposed research project which justifies the need for your work. It is used to convince academic committees that your project should be approved.

If you are wondering how to write a synopsis for a PhD, then there are several things you must make sure your synopsis includes. Firstly, the reader must be able to read your synopsis and understand what contribution it would make to the research area. You should also explain the research objectives, methodology, data analysation and presentation format. PhD Synopsis format for a project

Although the format of a PhD synopsis report may differ between universities, there are many universal recommendations I can give. First, the research project synopsis format must include several fundamental sections which allow you to clearly detail your proposed project.

Clearly define the title of your research project.

Include an introduction which summarises the current knowledge in your research area. This section should explain where gaps in knowledge are, and briefly what your project aims to do to address these gaps.

A literature review will be a summary of published literature including journals, papers and other academic documentation which relate to your project. You need to critically appraise these documents: What have others done? What did they find? Where could their work be expanded on?

Aims & Objectives

Clearly define what the purpose of the PhD project is. What questions are you trying to answer? How will you measure success?

Research Methodology

Explain how you will achieve your objectives. Be specific and outline your process; the equipment you will use, data collection strategies, questionnaires you will distribute and data analysation techniques you will employ. This is a critical part of the research synopsis as it demonstrates whether your project is achievable or too ambitious.

You must provide references and citations to any sources you use. Reference materials are needed to acknowledge the original source, allow further reading for those who are interested and avoid claims of plagiarism. The synopsis should clearly and concisely encapsulate and discuss the research findings presented in the manuscripts/papers included in the thesis. The synopsis should at least include:

  • Summaries in Danish and English (a requirement according to the PhD Order section 12, subsection 3)
  • Methods: this chapter should briefly summarize and reflect on the methods used
  • Description of the research project placed in the context of international state-of-the-art research within the subject area
  • Summary of the results of the papers and their relation to international state-of-the-art research within the subject area
  • If required for the studies, information on ethical and legal permits and approvals
  • Conclusions and perspectives for further research
  • Chapters consisting of any papers or manuscripts included in the thesis. The chapters must appear in the end of the thesis.

The monograph is typically 100 pages long, but the number of pages can vary. The monograph should include the following elements:

  • Summaries in Danish and English
  • Description of the research project placed in the context of international state-of the-art research within the subject area
  • Description of the research carried out (including materials, methods and results)
  • If required for the studies, information on ethical and legal permits and approvals
  • Discussion of results

Thesis front page layout

  • The red UCPH logo must be included on the front page of the thesis. Please note that the official logo includes the red line that intersects with the lowest red circle. 
  • The following must be stated on the front page of the thesis: “This thesis has been submitted to the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen [INSERT DATE].

  • Please remember to change the standard text in the upper left corner of the template. Insert the name of your own department or faculty.
  • Font, image use, etc. are agreed between the PhD student and the supervisor
  • The entire thesis – including published articles and/or unpublished manuscripts – has to be screened for plagiarism at The Royal Library. Therefore the entire thesis has to be OCR-readable. This means no articles and no text can be inserted as pictures. How to convert your thesis into an OCR-readable PDF
  • Your thesis must not exceed 100MB. Minimize it by compressing any images. The co-authorship declarations must be submitted in a separate PDF.

Declaration of co-authorship

Any articles included in the thesis may be written in cooperation with others, provided that each of the co-authors submits a written declaration stating the PhD student's or the author's contribution to the work. It must appear from the co-authorship declaration if an article or manuscript is also included in a co-author’s thesis. If a manuscript or published paper has eleven or less authors, all authors must sign a declaration of co-authorship. If it has twelve or more authors, only the PhD student, the corresponding author(s), the senior author and the principal supervisor need to sign the declaration of co-authorship.

The contribution of the PhD student must be described in the co-authorship declaration if an article or manuscript is also included in a co-author’s thesis.

Use of material from published articles (including your own)

Use of your own material from published articles

As a general rule, you may not copy text directly from your own manuscripts/papers into the thesis. This is perceived as potential self-plagiarism and is not acceptable. However, generally it is accepted to copy methods descriptions, concrete results incl. figures and tables when appropriately marked and referenced. If you have transferred copyright of your own publication to a publisher, the Graduate School recommends that you obtain permission from the copyright owner before you publish.

Of note, the Faculty screens all PhD theses for duplicate text using iThenticate immediately after submission and prior to forwarding to the assessment committee. iThenticate screens PhD theses against published papers, not your unpublished manuscripts.

Dungeons & Dragons finally gives players a peek at its upcoming revised edition that includes updated versions of The Player's Handbook , Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual . Fans of the tabletop role-playing game have been waiting for these tomes for years now after publisher Wizards of the Coasts confirmed in 2021 that it was tweaking the current ruleset of Fifth Edition to provide a more streamlined version of the game . The release of the rules also coincides with the franchise's 50th Anniversary , an event that will be immortalized by the new core rulebooks.

Per Game Informer , who also shared some stunning illustrations that will be included in the revised rulebooks, the updated Player's Handbook will be released on September 17, 2024, while Dungeon Master's Guide follows on November 12, and the Monster Manual will trail slightly after, dropping on February 18, 2025. Pre-orders for all three books start on June 18 and each one is priced at $49.99 . The cover of the new Player's Handbook features some of the most iconic characters from Dungeons & Dragons ' massive legacy, sporting the likes of Strongheart the Knight, Yolande the Elven Queen, Molliver, Mercion, and even Elkhorn.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e goes out with a bang before its 2024 relaunch thanks to Vecna: Eve of Ruin, a multiverse-spanning high-level campaign.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Come A Long Way

Gotta respect the tabletop king.

Illustrated by Tyler Jacobson, the covers of each of the new books, especially the Player's Handbook , are meant to pay homage to previous editions of the game while also serving as a fun example of the kinds of adventures players can expect in the game. The reverse cover features a group of unknown adventures riding upon a large bronze dragon, standing in stark contrast to the perilous battle the more iconic heroes find themselves on the front. In this way, Jacobson says that their illustrations help to embody and represent every experience that can be had at the table.

The updated core rulebooks will also sport some unique artwork to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons ' landmark birthday as early printings will include a " D&D 50th" seal on the back to mark the momentous year . They'll also all sport a red spine, a design choice that will also apply to all future rulebooks, further harkening back to previous editions. Many of the older monsters have also been redesigned to be more reflective of the game's current state, providing Wizards of the Coast with an opportunity to rework some of its more iconic but nonetheless dated creatures .

Dungeons & Dragons continues to grow as one of the most popular tabletop experiences currently available on the market and news that the updated ruleset will soon be available to pre-order will no doubt be music to fans' ears. The game has been teasing some significant updates but in terms of mechanical reworks, players will just have to wait and see what lies in store. Wizards of the Coast will likely share even more information on the books in the coming months to further build up hype for their release, so expect even more updates in the near future.

Job Summary:

As one of the first combined Schools of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), UW SMPH is a leader in the multidisciplinary study of health and healthcare. The aims of implementation science are fully aligned with the missions of UW-Madison, SMPH, and the UW Health delivery system to translate innovation that advances the Wisconsin idea: using "campus resources to meet the challenges of improving health, well-being, and equity in WI and beyond." Implementation science expertise bridges gaps between research and practice to ensure that the promise of scientific discovery is realized by our hospital, clinics, and community. Implementation science as a discipline includes methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings AND evidence-based practices into routine care, and, hence, to improve the quality and effectiveness of healthcare. Implementation science capacity is instrumental for exceptional academic medical centers like ours that aspire to be on the leading edge of innovation and quality. PhD applicants will be expected to dedicate up to 70% of their time to independent research, teaching and or service responsibilities. 35- 40% of their remaining FTE time will be dedicated to UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) Dissemination and Implementation Launchpad leadership role responsibilities. The preferred candidate would qualify for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and would have a strong track record of funding and publications in implementation science, a deep knowledge of implementation science research methods with an area of recognized expertise/specialization in implementation science. Preference will be given to candidates experienced in leading extramurally funded research using implementation science methodology at the PI level.

Responsibilities:

As Director of the Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) Launchpad in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), the successful applicant will lead the scientific and programmatic vision for implementation science resources within ICTR. This individual will make connections across ICTR, SMPH, allied health schools and other areas of campus, and build the program, enhancing the university's capacity for implementation science projects. They will also demonstrate the value of implementation science (especially related to Clinical and Translational Sciences) through national presentations and publications. The successful candidate will lead the UW D&I Launchpad team to coordinate all D&I related activities, including workshops (e.g., annual D&I short course reaching 100+ annually; 50 institutions to date), educational programs, internal and external conferences, seminars, presentations, and meetings, and collaborate with program faculty and leaders to develop content for the academic year. They will engage faculty, students, and staff across UW and partner organizations in UW SMPH's D&I activities and events, including delivering a system for D&I consultations (~400 consults since 2020). This individual would make connections across ICTR, SMPH, allied health schools and other areas of campus, and build the program, enhancing the university's capacity for implementation science projects. They will also demonstrate the value of implementation science (especially related to Clinical and Translational Sciences) through national presentations and publications. PhD, nonclinical, faculty will be expected to maintain a research/teaching/clinical portfolio consistent with the UW SMPH tenure track expectations. The preferred candidate will either have experience teaching and working with a diverse population or will welcome a commitment to teaching and working with a diverse population. The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health.
