The Call for PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowship in Discrete Mathematics and Probability At the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Rwanda is now open.
The German research chair, Dr. Jan Hązła at AIMS Rwanda , in collaboration with Prof. Nicola Kistler at Goethe University in Frankfurt , Germany, is offering PhD and Postdoc fellowships at AIMS Rwanda research center in Kigali. These fellowships are made available and funded by the DAAD and sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and research in Germany , to promote international academics exchange as well as educational cooperation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programs.
AIMS Rwanda is looking for excellent candidates with strong interest and background in research in Discrete Mathematics and Discrete Probability with applied motivations. The research topics will be mathematical, motivated by various applications like error-correction in data transmission, voting procedures, network processes and understanding machine learning algorithms.
Eligibility for PhD applicants
- A Master’s degree in mathematical sciences (two-year degree is strongly preferred).
- Strong interest in one of the areas indicated above.
- Any experience in the areas indicated above is a plus.
- Good coding skills (eg., Python, Matlab/Mathematica and similar) are a plus.
- Academic excellence.
- Good communication skills in English.
- Preferably a national of an African country.
Eligibility for PostDoctoral applicants
- A PhD degree in mathematical sciences PhD graduation at most 6 years before the start of the fellowship).
- Strong interest and background in one of the areas indicated above.
- Previous research in the areas indicated above is a strong plus.
- Good coding skills (eg., Python, Matlab/Mathematica and similar) ae a plus.
- Academic excellence and track record in conducting research.
Female candidates and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to apply.
Funding for PhD
- The Ph.D. positions are tenable for 3 years, contingent on satisfactory progress, and could be extended for one more year.
- Monthly scholarships are 1.325 EUR (during stays in Rwanda) and 1.200 EUR (during research stays in Germany).
- Tuition fees are covered.
- Travel costs (if applicable) are covered.
- Health insurance costs are covered.
- Additional benefits are made available for mobility when commencing and finishing the scholarship in Rwanda and for research stay at the Goethe University during the course of the doctoral project.

In partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is inviting students who are in the final stage of their MSc or MSc holders with an interest in data science and its related disciplines (such as Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, Cluster Analysis, Data Mining, Big data Analytics, Data Visualization, Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, Deep Active Learning, Cognitive Computing among others), to apply for one of four attractive PhD scholarships at its pioneering Quantum Leap Africa (QLA) Research Centre in Rwanda.
The AIMS-Carnegie Research program in Data Science and its Applications aims to position Africa at the forefront of information science. It also seeks to ensure that scientists worldwide are able to fully contribute to the above goal.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be from any country.
- Applicants must hold at least an MSc degree in any field related to mathematical sciences before the start date of this position.
- Applicants should be interested in undertaking research in Data Science and its related disciplines.
- Knowledge in mathematical modelling would be an advantage.
- Applicants must be open-minded, and must be willing to conduct their research at their preferred AIMS Research Centre, or a designated partner institution in one of the AIMS host centres.

Offered Benefits
Successful candidates will each benefit from financial support of up to $19 390 per annum for the three year duration of their research study. Funding is also available for conferences and international scientific events. The term can be renewed based on satisfactory progress. Students would preferably be based at QLA in Rwanda and could be affiliated to any of the AIMS Research Centres and spend time in other international partner universities or research centres. Beneficiaries may also be affiliated to any recognized institution of higher learning located in the same country as the AIMS Research Centre.

We are looking for excellent candidates with strong interest in research in Discrete Mathematics and Discrete Probability with applied motivations. The research topics will be mathematical, motivated by various applications like error-correction in data transmission, voting procedures, network processes and understanding machine learning algorithms.
Among others, we are seeking for candidates with a strong interest in one of the following areas:
- Theoretical computer science and related areas.
- Coding theory.
- Combinatorics.
- Social choice theory and opinion formation.
- Theory of spin glasses.

- Two reference letters. Please indicate the names and email addresses of the referees in the application. They will be contacted to submit their confidential references by May 15, 2022. The application is not complete without the references.
The letter of motivation should shortly (1 page maximum) and concretely state the candidate’s interests and motivations. A detailed research plan is not required
Fellowship Holders
Successful fellows are expected to conduct research in the thematic areas indicated in the section “Scientific interests”. They are expected to publish their results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and to be actively engaged in the research activities of the German Research Chair, as well as contribute to the implementation of the cooperation between the Chair and Goethe University in Frankfurt. Fellows are also expected to have some involvement in the AIMS Rwanda academic programs. Fellows will be affiliated with AIMS Rwanda, but they will be encouraged to conduct scientific visits in Germany.

The AIMS Scholarships offer students from African origin fully-funded awards covering full tuition fees, relocation stipends, equipment and research costs.
Students benefit from full scholarships by studying at AIMS which give them continuous access to computing, internet and electricity as well as close interaction with full-time tutors and visiting professors from across the world.

- Be an African citizen
- Hold a Master’s degree (completed by Sept 2022) in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, physics or other relevant fields;
- Have sufficient theoretical foundations evidenced by prior work (courses/thesis/other training);
- Have qualification for pursuing research on the chosen topic, including relevant programming expertise;
- Possess research potential evidenced by academic performance and involvement in relevant academic activities;
- Have motivation for pursuing a PhD by research in the suggested topic
