Art class should be about more than just making art! Art lessons should introduce students to a variety of works of art and allow them to explore the process, the history, and their own personal connections to the artworks they encounter.

Keeping a class full of students engaged while looking at art takes practice, confidence, inventive activities , and a variety of approaches. But most of us weren’t taught how to talk about art with kids . That’s why I’ve gathered some of my best printable art worksheets and downloads in one place! Most of these art lesson plans can be used for any grade level and there’s enough variety to keep elementary, middle, and high school students interested and intrigued.

Fun Assessment Ideas for Art Lessons

Peer and self assessments; whole class evaluations; formative and summative assessments; teacher feedback; exit tickets; quick checks; verbal feedback… The list of ways for art students to receive feedback or evaluate their artwork can seem endless (and sometimes confusing) but these learning activities are critical for engaging and purposeful art lessons. Without succinct feedback, time to reflect or evaluate their artwork, students can often miss (or forget) important elements of the lesson outcomes, or even not understand how to achieve them. Using a range of feedback activities in art lessons can help to ensure all students are on board with the lesson aims and how to achieve or exceed them.

Reflecting on my teaching recently, I felt that I was stuck in a bit of an ‘assessment rut’ and was using the same WWW / EBI (What Went Well / Even Better If) feedback activities over and over again. This is where students identify successes and targets in each other’s work and can be an effective formative assessment tool and a good way to peer assess artwork – but! It often comes in the same repetitive format of students writing down feedback or giving it verbally.

So, since I am a loud and proud Teaching and Learning geek , I thought I would do a bit of research.

Here comes *some* of the science…

Peer assessment has been noted as a potential learning strategy for engaging students in knowledge construction and skill development via comprehending teachers’ assessment criteria, learning from viewing peers’ work, and making reflections. Topping (1998) defined peer assessment as a learning strategy whereby students evaluate or comment on the value or the quality of the work or the learning outcomes of their peers who learned with the same learning content. The objectives of conducting peer assessment activities are to improve the students’ learning outcomes, stimulate their higher order thinking (e.g., meta-cognitive awareness), and increase their autonomy. For example, several studies have reported that peer assessment activities are effective in terms of enhancing students’ autonomous learning ability. Moreover, the effect of engaging students in the role of a reviewer on their reflections has been pointed out. On the other hand, the benefit of receiving feedback from peers in improving students’ learning outcomes has also been reported. For instance, Nicolaidou (2013) found that students’ feedback could gradually become more comprehensive and correct by inspecting peers’ comments in the learning process. Other researchers have also found that assessment training can result in a significant decrease in the discrepancy between student and instructor ratings of example projects; that is, the students’ meta-cognitive awareness might be improved.

Here I have collated a range of fun, creative formative and summative assessment activities that engage students and are designed to be more tailored to art lessons. These classroom assessment ideas are designed to empower your students and promote a positive learning environment – you do not want to demoralise anyone’s hard work! Finding assessment activities that are meaningful to you and your students is really important so try things out, change ideas, swap elements etc. and see what works best for you.

The art assessment ideas here are NOT all of my ideas, I have seen these in other lessons and found some online – I hope they are useful!

Self assessment ideas for art lessons

• Students are given a blank emoji face (included in the resources) and draw in the emoji which best reflects their work from the lesson. There is space on the handout for students to write a sentence explaining why they chose their emoji.
• This can easily be adapted to whichever project you are teaching, and you could guide students to make sure they use appropriate keywords in their sentences.

• Students are given a guide (on the board) explaining how to earn points based on their work. Eg. You earn a point each time you have mixed a secondary colour . Students do some mental maths and add up their points total.
• I usually give prizes out for the top scores, or ask students to explain to the rest of the group how they earned their points. I have found this to be a great art plenary activity.
• Students evaluate their artwork and explain how they have made their work ‘Good’, ‘Better’ or ‘Best’. I usually have the lesson outcomes explaining how to reach the different stages and make sure students use appropriate keywords in their answers. Eg. My work is better because I have… My work is best because I have…
• This can be extended by asking other students to agree / disagree using thumbs up or down . This works well when students can explain their reasoning and use the appropriate lesson outcomes in their answers.
• This can all be verbal, written or you could choose different students from the class to feedback to the rest.
• This is the same as Good, Better and Best, but students use the Nando’s Spice Level instead! I have found this to be more engaging with my older art students.

Peer assessment activities for art lessons

• Students have a small amount of set time (usually 2 minutes) to give their partner as much feedback as possible about their work. Explain that they should use the lesson outcomes and have to talk for the full amount of time.
• After half the time has passed, students swap and the other person talks. I love this as a plenary activity in art as it really makes the students think quickly on the spot! It is great if you have a few minutes at the end of the lesson spare too. 😆

• This is exactly the same as the points quiz plenary above except students swap work and award each other points. At the end of the activity they explain to each other how they earned their points.
• Usually I will hold up one or two pieces of work at the end and have the student explain how they reached X amount of points. Prizes for the top three points scores is always a bonus!
• I have mostly used this activity at the end of an art project as it is a really good exercise for students to reflect on all of their work throughout, rather than just one lesson or one piece of work. Students have to choose either Head (something that has made them think), Heart (something they have felt / an emotion), Bin (something they did not enjoy) or Bag (something they will remember to use in future).
• After some thinking time I ask the students to feedback to the rest of the group. I love this reflective activity because students always think of things I wouldn’t have considered!

• This is a really simple evaluation technique that is great for an art classroom as it makes sure students really look at each other’s work. Students write down two things they like about their peer’s artwork, then one thing they want them to work on or improve.

Whole class assessment ideas for art lessons

• This is a really fun activity that is completely student-led and a lovely way to finish off a lesson. Assign one student with a ‘ secret job ‘ to find the class superstar. I usually give this job to students who thrive off doing jobs around the classroom or need a bit of time away from their desk.
• Explain that they will choose a Secret Superstar from the class and they will feedback to the rest of the group why they chose them at the end. Give them tips such as working hard all lesson / producing excellent work / being independent / helping other students etc . If the rest of the class agree with the chosen Secret Superstar, there are rewards for both students.
• The student can subtly move around the room looking at other students working throughout the lesson.
• At the end of the lesson, tell the class what has been happening and ask the first student to explain why and how they chose their Secret Superstar.
• Fill out the blank Bingo sheet (included in the presentation) with keywords from your project. The rest is easy and fun – play Bingo! Prizes for the winners is always a good idea too.
• I have used this before with my GCSE art classes and had good outcomes and discussions from students, but of course give it a go with any of your classes. Simply ask students to blutack their work to a wall and host a group ‘crit’ or discussion. Asking students to write their thoughts on Post-It notes is a good idea too.
• I tried this and had students write their own name first so there were no silly answers 🙂

The 7th-grade art projects we have available are easy to do and are specifically designed for the age group, so don’t worry if you’re not an artist. These projects will help students learn more about different types of art, and they’re not just something we make up!

27 Art Activities and Lessons to Try at Home

Art Education and the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

In the current situation of the widespread transmission of COVID-19 , the hands of educators are tied. Knowing schools could be the first places to shut down, we’re waiting to see what’s expected of us. Will schools close? What happens if my school closes? Do I need to prepare for virtual learning? What if my students don’t have access to the internet or technology? How do I teach when students have limited access to art materials at home?

These are all questions that have probably been on the top of your mind in recent weeks. We don’t have the answers to all of these things, but we do know that trying to keep some normalcy in the routines of the art room at home is going to be a challenge.

The approach to this situation is not going to be one-size-fits-all. Every single art teacher has a unique situation and different student body they are trying to reach. Keeping that in mind, you, as the educator, will have to develop ways to plan and facilitate learning in a way that meets your specific situation. To help ease the pain of trying to figure out what to teach to your students at home, we’ve created a list of ideas to help inspire your planning. As you look at these ideas, keep in mind the circumstances of your students, and make adaptations to serve your students best.

Alternate Paint Ideas

Unfortunately, many students will not have access to paint at home. Consider using this as a time for exploration to introduce students to new types of paint. Challenge students to think about what natural materials they might have, much like the people creating cave art might have used.  Try some of these homemade paint options:

Found Object Ideas

Found object artmaking is a medium that has been explored by artists throughout the ages. Let your students’ creativity flow by creating with the objects they have around them.

Here is a list of found objects that might help inspire your students. Try one of these found object ideas:

• Found Object Color Wheel: Using the objects found throughout one’s home, have students collect as many colored objects as they can to create a color wheel. It will become a fun challenge to see how many different objects in different hues one can find at their home.

3-D Lesson Ideas

Planning activities and lessons for 3-D classes like ceramics and sculpture might present an extra challenge. It won’t be very easy to truly emulate the happenings of a ceramics class without clay at home. Maybe, you’ll get lucky, and you can send each student home with a pound of clay, but this won’t be the case for everyone. Instead, get creative and keep it simple. Here are some ideas to consider.

• Create temporary sculptures with household items. Have your students photograph them, and use them as a drawing inspiration. When you eventually get back to the classroom, students can recreate their sculptures with other materials.
• Have your students create stop-motion videos using clay-like material. This can be done with clay, play-doh, or even cookie dough.
• Paper Pottery
• Cardboard Sculptures

When it comes to limited supplies, drawing is going to be the best way to have our students find success. They can simply draw with the materials they have, any type of mark-making and paper will do the trick.

Creative Color Wheel

Middle school students will use color theory in this creative color wheel project. Designing individual parts to make a creative whole is so fun! This project covers Common Core Standards for Math for grade 7 which can be found at the end of the lesson.

Grade Level

5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grades- The examples in this lesson are by 7th graders

Objective  

In this Creative Color Wheel lesson, students will design a creative color wheel using primary, secondary and tertiary colors.

3 – 60 min lessons

Materials 

• Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple Acrylic Paint. Acrylic Paint – Crayola Washable Kids Paint Set, 10 Count
• 12×18 Watercolor paper – Canson XL Series Watercolor Textured Paper Pad for Paint, Pencil, Ink, Charcoal, Pastel, and Acrylic, Fold Over, 140 Pound, 12 x 18 Inch, 30 Sheets
• Brushes – Acrylic Paint Brush Set, 1 Packs / 10 pcs Nylon Hair Brushes for All Purpose Oil Watercolor Painting Artist Professional Kits
• Rulers (yard and foot if possible)
• Black – Tru-Ray Sulphite Construction Paper, 12 x 18 Inches, Black, 50 Sheets – 054150

Instruction with Questions

Show a couple of videos.  I like all of these, but depending on what background they have about color theory, you may only need a couple of them.  After watching them, have a discussion reviewing what they learned.

Another idea is to use this color wheel and have them color in the areas with the appropriate color.  Click Here for the PDF

An alternate plan would be to have students cut up magazines to find colors for each area of the template.

Students divide a 12×18 size paper into three sections (4 inches apart each)

Then divide it again. They should have 12 four inch size squares.

In each corner you can see (in the image below) that I had them label each corner with R for Red, RO for Red Orange, O for Orange and so on. It just amazes me that some students will ask me what comes between green and blue. Hmmmm. Anyway, this is a great reinforcement of tertiary colors.

On separate paper plates, I labeled them the same way. Only due to time, and expense, I pre-mixed the colors and set them throughout the room like stations, but I think it is even better when they mix them themselves.

Remind them to make the paint thick but smooth. Sometimes some students went back for a second coat. As you can see from the image below, I encouraged them to leave a bit of white around each edge so the paint did not bleed or mix.

Next, on a blank 4 inch size square, preferably card stock or more watercolor paper, have them draw an image. Now that sounds pretty simple, but it actually will require some practice images first. The main thing they want to do is to make lines and designs in the image. Like a face or in this case the place the hands go on the bat and the lines on the ball. I remind them we are only doing a silhouette. Like a shadow. Only the outline. I remind them to try to fill the paper with the image. In the case of the bat, use the diagonal so the image is as large as possible. It is natural for all of us to draw “small.”

I show the students how to use a window to trace each image exactly. First have them tape their large, dry colored paper to the window with the color facing out, away from them. Then trace the image on the paper. Once they are all traced, they are cut out.

Finally, pass out pre-cut 12×12 size square black construction paper. If I did this project again, I would give them a circle to place in the middle of the paper. It is really hard to find a circle when laying out the pieces. I love the ball and bat – one student did them facing out and another student inverted them. I also love the use of paw prints to add to the design. If you have more advanced students, you could use the scraps to add a complimentary color accent onto each piece.

Common Core Standards

7th grade – math – geometry.

Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.

• Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
• Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.
• Describe the two-dimensional figures that result from slicing three-dimensional figures, as in plane sections of right rectangular prisms and right rectangular pyramids.

Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

• Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
• Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in a multi-step problem to write and solve simple equations for an unknown angle in a figure.
• Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

I teach 5th grade and my group this year is so creative and artistic. I am not an artist and have no artistic talent, but work hard to bring quality art projects to my classes. I have searched everywhere for a creative way to teach color. This project is amazing and thanks for sharing this for teachers like me.❤️

This is so great! We had a lot of fun with it. I let the kids mix the colours…it was chaotic and stressful for me, but when I focused on their “talk” it was all about the colours, how much of each, no that’s too green, we need more blue…etc. So the kids got a lot out of it. CLASSROOM RULES

1. Food, drinks, candy, gum are not allowed in the Art rooms. A bottle of WATER is permitted in room 206 (only).

2. Cell phones are not allowed at any time. Phones should be turned off and put away.

3. Be in the room before the bell rings. Dropping your stuff and leaving does not qualify you as being on time.

4. Sit at your assigned seat unless I give you OK to move. That means you do not walk around the room during the class.

5. Talk quietly with students at your table. Do not talk during the instructional time.

6. Draw, paint, etc. on your artwork only!

7. Use materials from your tote-tray only... don't go into other people's trays.

8. You can bring your work home anytime. You are responsible for having it back next day.

9. If you must swear, please do it elsewhere... Thanks.

10. You are responsible for cleaning your work area and the tools that you used.

11. If you are in the Graphics lab, use the printers for the current ART assignments only!!!

12. Encourage your fellow classmates in a positive way... treat them fairly and nicely. This room should be a fun and comfortable place for everyone.

1. All assignments must be completed on or before the due date. 2. Unfinished artwork is graded as such. 3. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up all work. You can sign out art supplies if needed. 4. If your project requires extra time to be completed, you have to make arrangements with me prior the due date. This is your responsibility. 5. Each project has a rubric with specific requirements and guidelines. Follow them. 6. Unless an assignment specifically requires copying, it will be interpreted in the same manner as plagiarism. 7. You are also graded for your in-class studio work.

EDUC 2410 The Art of Teaching

Course description.

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2023-2024 . Courses of Study 2024-2025 is scheduled to publish mid-June.

This exploratory course is designed for students of all backgrounds and interests who have a desire to learn more about education and teaching. Teaching takes place in a variety of contexts from the family to the workplace, and this course endeavors to examine the elements of teaching that transcend the typical school-teaching environment. Designed to guide students in reflecting upon their experiences to help them better understand the decisions they make as teachers. Students have the opportunity to pursue their own interests through a teaching fieldwork assignment. Possible field experiences range from large group to tutorial situations, from preschool to adult education, from traditional school subject matters to recreational and occupational areas, and from school-based to nonformal situations. The course work and readings are designed to build on these experiences throughout the semester and provide concepts and skills to apply in the field.

Permission Note Enrollment preference given to: sophomores, juniors and Education minors.

Comments First-year students encouraged to enroll in spring semester. This course receives more credit than typical for the meeting pattern due to fieldwork outside the formal meeting times and an in-depth research project.

• Reflect on the elements involved in being an effective teacher in formal and informal educational situations.
