Earlier this month, Electronic Arts announced one of the most anticipated games of the year: Battlefield 5 , a shooter that, at least in its trailer, focuses on the glory and adrenaline of World War II. My Child Lebensborn , out now for Android and iOS, is more interested in the consequences. It’s the tale of a child, born during the war, and suffering from the pain of its legacy.

Set in Norway in the early 1950s , the game tells the story of seven-year-old Karin and their adoptive parent. Gender is optional for both characters, but I played as mother and daughter. As Karin’s mom, it’s my job to make sure the child is fed, clothed, entertained and protected. This takes place through a simple budget management system, in which I balance my meager post-war income and my time as a single parent, against Karin’s needs.

There’s a good deal of serving up meals, bath-time, fun trips outdoors, clothes mending and patching up cuts and bruises. Each day, I’m allotted a limited number of task slots, so I need to be smart about my choices.

Karin begins the game in a state of high excitement. She’s about to attend her local school for the first time. She and her best friend are looking forward to meeting new kids and learning about the world.

But her schooling experience turns out to be much tougher than she’d anticipated. The kids turn on Karin, bullying her because of her parentage. Although Karin herself is hazy about her biological parents, it’s common knowledge in town that her father was a German soldier.

Germany invaded Norway in 1940, garrisoning the country heavily. During the country’s five-year occupation, it’s estimated that one German soldier was stationed in Norway for every eight Norwegians. As the Norwegian economy collapsed, hunger and want were common.

During this time, a few thousand children were born to Norwegian women, fathered by occupying soldiers. The Nazi regime viewed these children as, essentially, German, and launched a program called “Lebensborn” (Fount of Life) to raise and indoctrinate them, often in Germany. After the liberation of Norway and the defeat of the Nazis, the children were sent back to Norway, where they, and their mothers, were ostracized.

In My Child Lebensborn , I struggled with Karin’s emotional turmoil, as she faces bullying from children, adults and even teachers. She transforms from a happy girl, brimming with curiosity, to a sullen, distrustful child. She asked difficult questions, which I negotiated through dialogue options.

It became a sort of bullying-management simulation, which offered useful tips for any parent who has to deal with their child being bullied. The main difference between My Child Lebensborn and a game set in, say, modern times, is that the apparatus of the state and the world of adults are indifferent to the problem. And so, I sought out alliances among those few adults who are sympathetic to Karin’s innocence. Most people are hostile, even Karin’s own blood relatives.

Running at about five hours, the game follows a troubling arc, in which it’s all too easy to make parenting mistakes. A tough-it-out attitude won’t work, but the game is also sensitive to its time and place, and to the trauma suffered by Norwegians during the war.

Karin is confused, frightened and lonely. Her happiness is a hard-won prize.

At times, My Child Lebensborn feels like a dreary affair, especially when the story arc dips between budget management rigamarole. But new story beats soon come along to offer more absorbing challenges.

Although its set in post-war Norway, My Child Lebensborn manages to capture the damage wrought by bullying, and how adults are often just as culpable as children. This is a game rooted in the real life experiences of people born in wartime Norway. Its developers interviewed Lebensborn adults about their childhood. But it offers some comfort and guidance to anyone who is experiencing (or has experienced) bullying, which is to say, it’s a game for everyone.

My Child Lebensborn is a story-driven nurture game - a dark tamagotchi - letting you experience the fates of Children Born of War. Take care of Karin and Klaus and help them survive in a post-war society. Find out what happened to their parents and try to find a better future.

My Child Lebensborn combines genre and theme in a unique way. Play as the adoptive parent of Klaus or Karin and guide your little one through the issues they face due to their heritage.

The game was released as a multi media project as a collaboration between Sarepta studio (Developers) & Teknopilot (Producer), The game touches on the real history of Lebensborn children. The events in the game is the reflection of what really happened to real life Lebensborn - inspired by the interviews with them.

The game won multiple awards, including a BAFTA in "Games Beyond Entertainment" category.

The game is available on mobile ( Android & iOS ) , PC ( Steam ) and Console ( Playstation , Xbox , Switch ).

Gameplay [ ]

Adopt Klaus or Karin in post WW2 Norway - they need you.

In My Child Lebensborn , the player plays as an adoptive parent of a Lebensborn child in Norway after World War II. The player must make choices based on off-screen events (e.g. responding to child being bullied at school) and help to take care of them at home (e.g. making food for them). Each day, there are two units of time that the player can use to help to make sure the child's "need" meters (food, hygiene and rest/affection) do not empty. At the end of each chapter of the game, the player sees how their decisions fall on an emotional spectrum and how it has affected the Child.

Development [ ]

While Elin Festøy was developing a documentary about the children of Lebensborn, she decided instead to focus on a project that would elicit empathy for the children amongst a broader audience. She met developer Catharina Bøhler, a developer who was already creating a child nurturing game, and they created what Festøy called "a documentary game".

Festøy was concerned that a documentary film would just be a movie about old people talking about war, and felt that a video game would work better to show the story of what the children had to go through. "We want to make people know what it felt like for those kids," Festøy said. "We want to highlight how war isn't over until the hatred ends. Our game will be a simulator letting you experience first hand what it is like to grow up in a hateful society, focused on the situation of the child instead of the greater conflict." The game was among the first wave of video game titles that were permitted to display the swastika in Germany. The game was funded partially by a Norwegian government arts grant, and partially through a successful Kickstarter campaign. [1]

A sequel game to My Child is in early development, described as an emotional successor to My Child Lebensborn, where you take care of Klaus or Karin in a different time and place. The game does not yet have a release date. [2]

My Child Lebensborn Remastered [ ]

My Child Lebensborn Remastered was announced on May 20th 2023, at the Indie Live Expo. The remaster features updated graphics and more opportunities to create memories with the child. [3] The remastered game was released June 23rd 2023 as a free update to the paid version of the mobile game, and released for all other platforms July 9th 2023 as another, standalone game.

Reception [ ]

Reviewers commented that the game was not fun because of its dark story, but felt the game taught important lessons for players and was still an experience worth playing. Polygon 's Colin Campbell described Lebensborn as a "sort of bullying-management simulation" and praised the game for being an uncomfortable experience. Der Spiegel 's Matthias Kreienbrink called the game "not fun" but noted that it was a "partly depressing, partly enlightening" experience. The Guardian 's Simon Parkin felt that the game was "fierce and unflinching", and that although the game succeeded as a portrait of time in history, it was a "a difficult ride – oppressive, psychologically strenuous and repetitive." Pocket Gamer 's Emily Sowden felt that it was an educational experience that was worth it for the "price of a cup of coffee".

The game won a 2018 BAFTA Games Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) at the 15th British Academy Games Awards on 4 April 2019 as a "Game beyond entertainment". [1]

My Child Lebensborn is based on the real life Lebensborn programme created by Nazi Germany. The term Lebensborn itself means “Fount of Life.” Once WWII ended, many Lebensborn survivors were mistreated and often subjected to ostracization . Their stories became the inspiration for the game. [4]

But now to the answer the question on how to get the achievements. I believe you can't. The sixth chapter is the end of the game, and the achievement you get for completing the sixth chapter is Hope. As you're aware of you can't get the achievement. Technically you didn't complete the game if you didn't get the achievement Hope(and I don't think it's a bug at this point), meaning you can't get the time achievements for completing the game. Goddamn (Spoilers ahead)

This game destroyed me, dude. Shelled out the $3 after playing the trial and Jesus. I'm someone whose #1 goal in life is to have a son and being forced to watch him get bullied was bad enough but when he got raped by his teacher, I started sobbing . I have realized I would commit murder in this situation, should it occur in real life, which is always a good learning experience for yourself. Get to know yourself better, yunno.

TLDR; This game ruined me. Highly recommend.
