Last year, LinkedIn began experimenting with AI-powered tools for job seekers on its platform. Now the company has added a bunch of new capabilities for its premium subscribers who are #OpentoWork, including personalized resumé, AI-assisted cover letters and more conversational job searches.

The changes are meant to speed up some of the most tedious aspects of looking for a new role. For example, the revamped job search feature now allows you to look for roles with queries like “find me a marketing job that’s fully remote and pays at least $100,000 a year,” or “find business development roles in biotech.” Those are all relatively simple descriptions but anyone who has searched for jobs on LinkedIn (without the help of AI) knows that it can often be a struggle to narrow down job listings with keywords.

Once you find a role you’re interested in, the built-in assistant can give you feedback on your qualifications and help with your application. You can upload a copy of your current resumé and LinkedIn’s AI will provide tips on what to update based on the job description. This can include suggestions on specific experiences to highlight or the ability to rewrite entire sections of the document. Likewise, LinkedIn can generate cover letters based on your experience and the job you want to apply for.

The company gave me a preview of these tools and I thought it did a surprisingly decent job for a first attempt at a cover letter. It incorporated specific details from my profile and the tone didn’t feel as robotic as much of the AI-written text I’ve encountered. Of course, as a journalist, I like to believe I can still write a better cover letter than an AI. But, I can see how the tool could be useful for people applying to dozens of jobs at once, especially since many companies use AI software to whittle down applications anyway.

LinkedIn product manager Rohan Rajiv says that these tools are meant to be more of a jumping off point for users rather than an all-in-one solution. “What we want to do is make it easy for folks who have a difficult time telling their story, have a difficult time staring at a blank screen trying to put something together to at least get started,” he tells Engadget.

But he also notes that the company is still in the relatively early stages of its AI push and it could eventually automate more of the job application process. “The next horizon is going to be … can you just do that for me,” he says. “You can almost imagine people thinking about it from an agent standpoint, and helping you get things done.”

How to Use ChatGPT to Write a Resume

If you've just graduated college or you're looking for a new job , a solid resume can get your foot in the door. Unlike a cover letter, which has to be tweaked for every new application, your resume only needs to be updated every year or two to showcase your skills, experience, education, honors and references. 

With the state of the job market, mass layoffs, and shift to the gig economy, investing time now to create an epic resume will pay off. Your resume is the first touch point you have with a prospective employer, but if staring at a blank page and trying to write about yourself is discouraging, then let artificial intelligence do the legwork. 

ChatGPT , the breakout generative AI tool, can help you with the best practices of resume writing and speed up the process. If there's one thing AI is good at, it's synthesizing, structuring and summarizing information. And once you have your resume, you can use it to create a custom cover letter . 

You can use a free version of ChatGPT or pay $20 per month for added features like the  most recent models , priority access during peak usage, and image generation. 

If you're struggling to condense career highlights over decades into two pages, read on.

Creating a resume from scratch

Set yourself up for success by doing some preparation. ChatGPT needs context, otherwise it'll spit out generic content that's sometimes even wrong . I started by researching reporter resume templates and jotted down notes about past experience, education and accomplishments. 

Then to find out what ChatGPT needs, just ask. "Can you write me a resume?" was my first prompt, and ChatGPT conveniently told me all the information to input so it could get to work. 

I replied with all my information, outlined like this, and attached my preferred format: 

Here is my professional summary: [paste]  Here is my work experience: [paste]  Here are my major clients: [paste]  Here is my education: [paste]  Please generate a list of skills based on my experience and format my resume like the example below: [paste template]

ChatGPT does a great job of organizing information into a cohesive format, but I wanted to change it so it flowed a little better (it put my education before my experience, making it look at first glance like I didn't have any experience). 

Please reorganize the following sections in this order: 

• Contact Details 
• Summary 
• Experience 
• Major Clients 
• Skills

Keep your info less sensitive

You'll see that I didn't give the chatbot my contact details to add to the resume. I prefer to keep my sensitive information out of the model to avoid any future data breaches or unnecessary risk, so I'll add my email, phone number and address myself in the final version. 

When reviewing ChatGPT's draft, I noticed two issues: 

• My 10 years as a full-time freelancer needed to be fleshed out, by adding noteworthy projects and long contracts. 
• The skills list was way too long. 

Back in ChatGPT I wrote the following:

Please add two contract roles under Freelance Reporter and Writer in the experience section. 

Freelance Reporter at NerdWallet, August 2022 - present. Tasks: Writing personal finance advice articles, providing insights and strategies to educate and empower everyday consumers in Australia. Topics include credit cards, travel points, frequent flyer programs, BNPL, credit scores, money management, and more.

Freelance Reporter at Decential, September 2022 - present. Tasks: Reporting on the people, projects and protocols in the world of web3. Cover news, interview founders, write deep dive features and commentary, and cover in-person events and conferences.

Then, instead of reducing the skills list, I asked that it be arranged in two columns. The chatbot put the info into a table, which I didn't like, so I asked that it be removed. 

ChatGPT still had a hard time with it. I asked it again to present the info in two columns, with a space in between but without a table or borders. You can highlight a section and reply specifically there. 

But it still didn't work, so I stopped wasting time and did it myself directly in the document. 

Final tweaks

Before I made my final tweaks, I asked ChatGPT to provide a short list of suggestions for how to improve my resume. It gave me some solid advice -- like highlighting achievements, quantifying results, tailoring my resume to a specific job, adding keywords and making my professional summary more concise -- but take it with a grain of salt. 

For example, my professional summary shows my narrative abilities and doesn't take up much real estate. I did, however, add a section for notable projects.  

Though some advice was relevant, like adding metrics to achievements and starting each bullet point with a strong action verb, the others weren't necessary. For instance, I didn't want to make my profile more concise, because that's where I show off my narrative ability for writing jobs. When using artificial intelligence, always trust your human instinct. 

Last, I wanted to get it down from four pages to three, so I arranged my major clients into two columns and reduced the skills list. You can see the final version of my AI-created resume below.

Once ChatGPT is done with the nitty gritty, you can add the finishing touches yourself. I'll drop in my logo and byline hyperlinks, then it's good to go!

Environmental Consulting

The Environmental Policy field centers around the alternation of public policy and social institutions that influence the way we manage the environment and our natural resources. By researching scientific data and current legislation Environmental Policy makers create new laws and legal standards that will better serve shifting environmental demands.

Environmental & Urban Planning careers create programs that use land more efficiently with minimal damage to the surrounding environment. They often focus on the use of natural resources and attempt to predict any risks or problems that may arise, and then create plans to combat these risks. Urban planners help to direct a city’s or town’s development. The profession of urban planning is involved in improving the life and health quality of not just what is traditionally thought of as “urban” spaces, but of all spaces in which human beings live.

Though the words “sustainability” and “green” often invoke the idea of environmental scientists, this narrow view does not accurately represent the diversity of the field. While these scientific careers are certainly part of the industry, there are many other options for those seeking a Sustainability job or Green profession. In fact, many Sustainability careers are often focused on helping organizations and companies run more efficiently, thereby increasing their profits, pleasing their customer base, and creating a sense of well being among the community.

Careers in Agriculture and Forestry make up one of the largest industries and sources of long-term employment in the country, providing jobs for millions of Americans. These careers supply us with a multitude of food products and alternative energies, among many other important resources for sustaining our country and contribution to the world economy. In addition, these careers – particularly those associated with Forestry – conserve our natural resources and assure we have bountiful supplies of land to utilize in the future. Many of the careers in the Agriculture and Forestry industry are considered “Green Careers,” meaning that the careers are involved in preserving or protecting our environmental resources.

A biological technician has many duties that support conservationists and environmental scientists in their research. These include maintaining the laboratory to create a clean space to conduct tests and experiments. In some positions, they also must gather and prepare samples for analysis as well as document and interpret their findings.

Professionals in wildlife management and care address national and international issues that affect the current and future status of wildlife throughout the world. A career in this field requires extensive preparation and long hours of hard work to acquire knowledge and skills for competitive positions that often require higher education degrees.

What specific skills and experiences should a resume include for Environment, Sustainability & Conservation?

A simple, well-organized resume is a great place to start. Generally, staying away from fancy graphics and the free templates online will help you to rework and add to your resume as you continue to gain experience, allowing you to adapt content over time. Depending on your experience, here are examples of different content to include to tailor your resume when applying to jobs and internships.

Tips to Tailor Your Resume: 

• Examples: Ecology of Fishes, Limnology, Environmental Toxicology, Entomology, Museum Studies
• Excel (proficient), ArcGIS (proficient), and Premiere Pro (familiar)
• Land navigation (highly proficient), mapping, topography, and lab/field research

Where can I find jobs and internships in this career area?

It depends on the type of jobs and internships that interest you! The community newsletter and Facebook group highlight relevant opportunities as they’re posted, and this handout provides you with examples of local organizations where students are known to volunteer, work, and intern locally and across the U.S. Handshake is also a good site to check out, because it has information about career fairs and employer events as well as job and internship postings. I recommend adding the Handshake widget to your MyUW homepage to easily access the site. And of course, there’s the student job board for UW-Madison where you’ll find research, on campus, and Madison based opportunities. Finally, you will find environment specific job boards under the More Resources to Explore section at the bottom of this page . See the Build Your Experience & Skills menu to get started! 

Larger job boards (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.) are always an option, too. While they can be overwhelming they do give you suggestions in the job search window of other titles to search. This can be helpful in creating a keyword list to help narrow your search. For the time being, I recommend you start with more focused search resources like the ones included above.

Can I get an environmental job without a graduate degree?

Potentially! To get started as an undergrad, consider searching for research opportunities (on campus or summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) and field based study abroad programs (like  CEIBA  or  School for Field Studies  programs). Also, field based programs in the US like  WRFI  may be more accessible than study abroad programs in the upcoming year.

When you graduate, environmental work often requires specific experience, education, and specialized training. Depending on skills you have developed in college, you may qualify for various technician, specialist, and consulting roles. In addition, depending on the type of work you are willing and able to do, you can begin through gap year programs, internships, limited term and part-time jobs.  Environmental email job boards  are a good resource to sign up for to get a better sense of what types of jobs are available.

Are there well-paid career paths in this field?

While most people who go into environmental related career paths aren’t looking to get rich, environmental jobs span all work sectors, including finance, policy, law, business, real estate, government, and non-profit. Figuring out the different work environments will help you better understand which paths you might want to pursue.

Do I have to go to veterinary school to work with wildlife animals?

You first want to learn the different ways in which you can work with animals. For example, you may become a zoologist or wildlife biologist working in different paths in conservation management and wildlife rehabilitation where getting a master’s degree and the appropriate certifications and permits will allow you to work in state and federal government positions. Some paths will require further education, especially work with more of a research focus. Figuring out the types of animals you want to work with will also help determine the necessary level of education. If you don’t know what you’re interested in yet, do something, anything to narrow down your interests.

Can I work in sustainability & business if I don't have a business background?

Trying out multiple related opportunities during college is just as important as doing the same once you’ve graduated. When you’ve gained more job experience and tried out different functional areas to build your skills, then figuring out the next right step for working in sustainability will help you be prepared to follow a path that works for who you are and what you want to do. Guest commentary: the importance of building a great teenage resumé, whether it's to prepare for college or a post-high school career, carefully collecting accomplishments can help teens build their future..

I have found that one of the biggest obstacles in the creation of this all-important resumé is something we know all too well — being young and thinking we have all the time in the world.

As an adult, I remember having this attitude in my younger years, and it never served me well. Add youth and unlimited time with no deadline and we get procrastination. Add lack of planning to that procrastination and you get a lot of time wasted with absolutely no outcome.

You and your teen have four years of high school to create a life that is meaningful to any college, so don’t waste that time! Those four years go by like the blink of an eye.

It is very easy for teens to disregard their future during high school. That time is an all-encompassing “forever” moment, and teens and their parents wind up falling into the trap of doing activities for their own sake and taking classes because they have to.

Our kids are just living their lives: getting up, going to school, doing homework, joining after-school activities, taking music, soccer or tennis lessons and, of course, hanging out with friends while playing on their phones and computers.

It seems like their schedules are completely full, but do these activities lead anywhere? Does it feel as if your teen’s brain is running on a hamster wheel?

You might think that what your teen does after school doesn’t matter, but you’d be wrong. If you carefully craft the “perfect” pre-college life, you can transform your teen from a “buyer” to a “seller” in terms of college. In other words, your teen will be more in control of his or her future and not have to depend on being chosen by the college but have it the other way around.

So I highly suggest that you do not scramble at the last minute to figure out what your teens have accomplished in their high school years. Be thoughtful, take your time and take control of the situation early and create an outstanding resumé by organizing what they need to succeed with the admissions office and scholarship committee.

It would be prudent to realize that most serious students have been carefully crafting their resumés for years. They have planned their volunteer hours, clubs, their role in those clubs, private lessons and extracurricular activities as events that inevitably lead to being accepted to the university they are looking forward to attending.

Being a music educator and working with hundreds of students for many years has taught me that building a college resumé slowly throughout high school is the way to go. I would suggest starting in ninth grade. For every after-school activity, have your teen think five years in the future. If teens have some type of road map to get to their end goal, they will most likely get there. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

As a parent, don’t fret if college might not be the path your teen feels he or she needs. I would recommend building a resumé anyway. It becomes a blueprint for the future, and setting activities to build that great resumé will help your teen find a job or create a business plan after high school.

Even if the creation of a resumé is specifically set to figure out what your teen wants to do in life, it is a win/win project. I feel this is such an important aspect of building a future that I have created a resumé builder and budget planner for my music students that will help them develop and organize habits that lead to a productive life.

Helping your teen see and build his or her future in an organized way will create a lifetime of goal-setting and, even more importantly, goal achieving. And dare I say that I believe goal-setting, discipline and organization are more important than attending a university. What is the use of spending thousands of dollars for a school when your teen doesn’t know why he or she is there?

So again, don’t worry. If your teen is not interested in college straight out of high school, there are many great careers that don’t need a degree. How about real estate? Real estate school is a short-term, high-return investment of your teen’s time and your money. He or she can even start out working in a real estate office to learn the ropes and get a feel for the career. That work also can go on the resumé.

Does your teen have an idea for a business? Business classes through a local SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) are amazing. This nonprofit organization is filled with volunteers who are retired business owners and professionals, and they know a ton. And teens can put their completed classes on their resumé. One more option is a trade school, which can lead to your teen owning a business. Taking a class on how to create a business plan while learning a trade can be quite valuable.

Doing research on how to build your child’s future, having conversations and throwing out ideas here and there always helps teens visualize their future and start building one that they will look forward to.

I know a lot of teens are worried about where they will go after high school. The resumé will keep them living in the moment to build their future selves. Your teens will be more comfortable and confident knowing they have a road map and parents who have their back.

Service restored to Amtrak, NJ Transit after earlier suspension

Amtrak service between Philadelphia and New Haven, Connecticut, resumed on Thursday evening after train service was suspended for over two hours as crews worked to restore power in the New York area, Amtrak said.

"Significant delays are anticipated due to rail congestion and single-tracking," Amtrak said in a statement to passengers after service was restored.

The outage included trains in and out of New York Penn Station, Amtrak said.

Service Update: As of 5:30 PM ET, power has been restored, and all rail service has resumed between New Haven (NHV) and Philadelphia (PHL). Significant delays are anticipated due to rail congestion and single-tracking.

- NJ TRANSIT (@NJTRANSIT) June 20, 2024 An unrelated brush fire was impacting wire repairs, according to Amtrak and NJ Transit.

The outage was reported shortly after Amtrak warned that the extreme heat in the Northeast might force trains to slow down, causing up to one-hour delays. It was not immediately clear if the service suspension was caused by the heat.
