Julia Khaziakhmetova

GS-star

"When I decided to take GAMSAT, I was completely lost and did not know where should I start since I did not have a science background. . . I purchased the book that guided me around main topics and the HEAP book with 10 practise tests, I watched every single available webinar, I did live courses and used essay-correction services."

Rebecca Marks

"I HIGHLY recommend both the books and the online resources which have had a huge amount of time and effort put into preparing them."

Nathan Benson

"This course is absolutely perfect. Felt overwhelmed for all three sections before I started studying for the GAMSAT, and this helped me so much for all of them. Found the Humanities textbook to be very beneficial for sections 1 and 2, and the videos (both science videos and acer answers) to be the best for section 3. Essay correction service was also excellent - they dont just give you general replies - they breakdown your essays completely, and give examples of how you could have said things differently..."

Dominic Givney

"For someone from a Non-Science Background such as myself, having these resources available to help me understand why I was getting questions wrong, and to provide a possible method for solving each of these questions was amazing. I can't thank Dr Ferdinand and his team enough for his work."

Isha Sharma

"I just received my GAMSAT results and I'm over the moon with the results! I certainly would not have been able to do it without your help!"

Nurcan Celik

"Gold standard was a great help - particularly their live course with Dr Ferdinand who was very interactive, experienced and knowledgeable, acer YouTube solutions and multiple practice exams. Was great to have the online access to multiple exams esp since this year the real thing was online!"

Reaver Dorn

"Gold Standard provided a high-quality and in-depth course exploring the various aspects of the GAMSAT. Having attended the live course headed by Dr. Ferdinand, I can say that the standard lives up to their brand name. Would recommend to people looking to improve on areas they struggle with, or are taking their first step into GAMSAT!"

Buckilicious

"Great course. Very stimulating material and good advice from Brett Ferdinand and the team. Would highly recommend for people wanting to enter medicine or those wanting to develop as human beings."

Conor O'Brien

"Thank you Dr Ferdinand and the GS team. I sat GAMSAT for the first time in March 2018 and it would've been a complete disaster without your help. I come from a non-science background and after doing a lot of research into the GAMSAT courses that are available I chose Gold Standard. The content is great but I found the direction on how to approach the test the equally as useful. I've heard stories from people who have done other GAMSAT courses and they weren't provided with the depth of instruction and support that I received from GS."

"So thankful for this course! No better way to study for the GAMSAT! You guys have thought of everything."

Gamsat course : frequently asked questions.

Whether or not you should invest in a complete GAMSAT course will depend on your life experiences and academic background. Some students have a solid foundation in sciences, and/or non-science topics, and will just need a refresher or revision course and heaps of practice to get used to the real-exam format. On the other hand, some students will need to start from the beginning, especially if they have no previous knowledge of science topics, or if they struggle with writing essays. In such cases, a more thorough preparation course would be very helpful. We recommend that a student looking to sit the exam starts with a diagnostic test to discover their strengths and weaknesses before deciding upon an appropriate GAMSAT preparation course.

Note that the best GAMSAT courses include topic revision and/or learning, heaps of quality practice questions, interactive teaching methods and tutorials. Gold Standard courses comprise over 100 contact-hours with comprehensive training for all exams sections. Seven updated paperback books and hundreds of topical videos just form the foundation. Dr Ferdinand gives students some 1:1 attention for study planning and to answer specific exam-related questions. Your multimedia experience includes apps and online tutorials with interactive, problem-based learning. The most videos, the most practice questions, the most full-length exams: Come learn from our experience!

Preparing for the GAMSAT course may involve watching videos, Masters Series textbook reading, or nothing - depending on your academic background. The academic backgrounds of students attending our GAMSAT courses vary widely. From science students with an academic degree in the topic at hand (e.g., one of the four basic, real-exam sciences) to non-science-background students who may have spent little or no time studying the topic at hand. Dr. Ferdinand's responsibility is to ensure that everyone learns and benefits, albeit according to their pre-course preparation.

Naturally, preparing for class will help you optimize your online experience. If the real Graduate Medical School Admissions Test is the Olympics, Gold Standard preparation courses represent your coach and training. And so, what you do at home, or in the library, is similar to going to the gym for a work-out before you come for your training.

Start with the online Masters Series videos by Gold Standard. You can watch all of Physics, from the very beginning right up to what we explore in our online tutorials, in less than 10 hours. So, at least by spending time studying each of the sciences in the Videos section of our website, you would greatly improve your long-term advantage of attending class and/or online tutorials.

Of course, you don't need to read all of the Masters Series books before attending class, but a few relevant chapters would be very helpful to you. Each book has tabs indicating the chapter's importance for the real exam: High, Medium and Low.

Because the real exam has been increasingly focused on graphs and tables, please consider the following: One of the initial steps to understand graphs and tables is to study the Maths chapters (particularly, Maths Chapter 3 from the Masters Series). Maths is the basis of graphs and tables and must be understood before moving on to exam-level practice.

To summarize, you do not need months of preparation to improve your in-class experience. Do what you can and then the Gold Standard GAMSAT course will boost your performance. Let's get started!

The best GAMSAT study materials will depend on your learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. It's important to try different materials and find what works best for you. Here are some of the most popular and highly recommended materials:

  • ACER official GAMSAT study materials: This includes the ACER practice questions, sample questions and past papers. They provide a reasonably accurate representation of the content of the actual GAMSAT exam. You may need to adjust the timing of the subsections to reflect the current exam format.
  • The Gold Standard GAMSAT textbooks: These textbooks are written by Dr. Brett Ferdinand and cover all three sections of the exam in detail. They include practice questions and strategies for approaching the different types of questions. The updated version is called the "Masters Series" and includes videos for each chapter.
  • Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers free online resources in science and mathematics that some students have found helpful as a free, though non-specific, online GAMSAT preparation course.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered active learning process in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving problems. Students learn both thinking strategies and relevant knowledge. PBL is the most popular learning technique in medical schools across the world because research has shown that students learn better and remember longer as compared to traditional lectures.

Gold Standard GAMSAT is not associated nor affiliated with ACER in any way. However, we think that it is very important for your future GAMSAT success that you consider the following quote from ACER's website referring to the current GAMSAT:

– GAMSAT Structure and Content by ACER

Gold Standard GAMSAT was the first to introduce problem-based learning (PBL) to GAMSAT courses in Australia. Virtually all students - regardless of academic background - participate in solving GAMSAT practice questions, and discuss responses as well as strategies. The role of the instructor is to facilitate learning by supporting, guiding, and teaching background content.

Although PBL is central to the way we help to optimise your learning, it is your choice. If you do not wish to participate for any reason, when you register for class on the morning of the seminar, please let the instructor know and we will respect your choice.

Study Tips For GAMSAT – Read Now

How can i best prepare for the gamsat .

Preparing for the GAMSAT is easier broken down in three sections to understand it as easy as possible.

When it comes to section 1 one of the GAMSAT, it would be best advised that you prepare for the following texts thoroughly as these texts are very likely to be in the exam : essays, poems, cartoons, dramas, editorials, graphs, figures, short stories, essays, letters, journals, and biographies

All of these types of stimulus material can be categorised into the following 4 categories:

  • Prose (in all diverse types)
  • Poetry (including Drama)
  • Social and/or Behavioural Sciences
  • Editorial Cartoon and/or Graphic Representations

Regular practice in writing and reading is the best and most effective means for preparing for this section of the GAMSAT. An E-Book reader would be a worthwhile investment for this. You can download unfamiliar words through Amazon and if you are not familiar with some words, you can learn their meaning through the inbuilt dictionary. It’s one of the best ways that we can recommend to improve your vocabulary.

Suggested Readings For GAMSAT Preparation 2024-2025

Following are some readings that will help prepare you for the texts you will find in section 1

  • The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Defying Hitler – Sebastian Haffner
  • English Passengers – Matthew Kneale
  • Oliver Twist – Charles Dickens
  • The Penguin Book of Twentieth Century Essays – Ian Hamilton
  • A Short History of Nearly Everything – Bill Bryson
  • The Story of My Life – Helen Keller

It should be of primary importance to improve vocabulary through the use of such online tools such as www.vocabulary.com . You should practice questions from the MCAT word list.

Section-I-like questions can also be found on readtheory.org .

Our team has released a Full Length GAMSAT Practice Test , which is identical to the actual GAMSAT exam. Students should complete all of the Section I practice questions in this test. Students should then check all answers and go back and see where they went wrong. This is the most effective and fastest way to improve your score in Section I.

The 4 ACER booklets are also a must-have resource to practice your Section I comprehension skills.

  • In the exam, students are to complete two essays – both Task A and Task B.
  • Essays should be at least 350 – 400 words.
  • Five quotes are provided for each essay task and all of the quotes surround a common theme.
  • Task A deals with socio-cultural issues and Task B deals with social and personal issues.
  • A title is recommended for each essay. Be creative! The markers are looking for the best ideas. Ideas are more important than spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • The best ideas get the best marks, so planning your essay in the first 5 minutes is the key to success. When planning your essay, read the series of 5 quotes carefully and determine the overall theme. The theme is quite obvious. Some examples of themes include: freedom, crime, poverty, wealth, punishment, science, technology, love, friendship, humour, suffering, youth, beauty, ageing, conformity, originality.

What Is Task A Of The GAMSAT ?

S2 – Task A

Task A is an argumentative essay. Each paragraph should be planned out.

Paragraph 1: Introduction – explanation and interpretation of a chosen quote or standpoint you have concerning the overall theme.

Students should aim for three body paragraphs. They should be Thesis, Thesis, Antithesis (or Thesis, Antithesis, Antithesis).

A concluding paragraph should then sum up and reconcile between the Thesis’ and Antithesis. Common themes that students could expect in the GAMSAT Task A include:

What Is Task B Of The GAMSAT ?

S2 – Task B

Task B is a personal essay. It should be written with feeling. Students need to be able to explain and visualise how other people may be feeling in different life situations.

The quotes that students receive have a personal theme, which allows students to relate the themes to their own experiences in life.

Paragraph 1: Acquaint the reader with the topic/theme and state your specific point of view.

There should be 3 body paragraphs. Each paragraph should focus on a different idea that supports your specific point of view.

A concluding paragraph should summarise the main points, then support the main view and end with a great impact on the reader.

What Are Some Common Topics That Students Can Expect In Task B Of The GAMSAT ?

  • Originality

What Does Section  3 Of The GAMSAT Include ?

This section of the GAMSAT includes physics at year 12 level and biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry all at university level. The exam consists of 20% organic chemistry, 20% physics, 20% general chemistry, and 40% biology.

Candidates are required to use their knowledge and the understanding of concepts in order to answer questions. This section involves the analysis of tables, charts, scientific information, and graphs.

It is important that students practise questions under timed conditions. The ACER booklets are a great start for practice questions.

The Ace GAMSAT team have released a ‘Full-Length GAMSAT Practice Test’ which contains 110 questions that are just like the real exam, so this is definitely a valuable resource.

If you want to know how to study for GAMSAT , then the following Section 3 topic list below is extremely valuable.

These refined topic points are covered in great detail in the respective Ace GAMSAT study guides .

  • The Biology Bible
  • The Organic Chemistry Bible
  • The General Chemistry Bible
  • The Physics Bible

Above all, the best way to prepare for the GAMSAT is pretty simple actually: practice, practice, practice!

Gamsat Review Blog

Everything you need to know about GAMSAT by Dr Peter Griffiths

Resources For Gamsat Section 2

Resources For Gamsat Section 2

Resources for GAMSAT section 2

When I was studying for Gamsat I spent hours looking for resources for section 2. If you're looking for your own resources for Gamsat section 2 I've written this short article to help you out so you can save yourself from spending hours like I did.

So a good strategy for section 2 is to get a good overview of current ideas and theories in a range of broad topics.

This way you'll be able to work them into your arguments in your essays and appear well informed and able to relate your arguments to the real world.

So if you can have a reasonably good idea of the most important historical ideas, plus the latest developments in a range of commonly discussed disciplines such as philosophy, politics, economics, art etc. that is a good strategy to adopt for section two.

Here's three useful resources which will help you achieve just that.

The first resource on our list is a website which has literally thousands of videos covering many topics.

This is TED which is a non profit organization which is devoted to spreading ideas in the form of short talks presented by experts in their fields from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.

The average length of these videos is about 20 minutes so you can watch them in easily digestible little chunks.

The Meaning of Things

This resource is a book written by well known British philosopher A.C. Grayling.

It consists of a series of brief articles which aim to help the reader think about life, common human dilemmas and universal difficulties. Encouraging introspection into life and experience to help us achieve a life worth living.

Some of the topics covered include include courage, love, betrayal, ambition, cruelty, wisdom, passion, beauty and death.

This book will help you generate concepts to support your arguments in your Gamsat section two essays.

50 Big Ideas

Another great book - 50 Big Ideas You Really Need to Know by Ben Dupré is a concise, accessible and popular guide to the central tenets of Western thought. Every important principle of philosophy, religion, politics, economics, the arts and the sciences is profiled in a series of short illustrated essays, complemented by an informative array of timelines and box features. Platonism, The Soul, Communism, Aristotelianism, Faith, Fascism, The Golden rule, Atheism, Racism, Altruism, Secularism, Feminism, Pluralism, Fundamentalism, Islamism, Liberty, Creationism, Capitalism, Toleration, War, Globalization, Scepticism, Duty, Classicism, Reason, Utopia, Romanticism, Punishment, Liberalism, Modernism, Materialism, Democracy, Surrealism, Relativism, Conservatism, Censorship, Utilitarianism, Imperialism, Big Bang, Existentialism, Nationalism, Chaos, Evil, Social contract, Evolution, Fate, Republicanism, Relativity, Quantum mechanics, Gaia.

These three resources are great way to get going with your Gamsat section 2 practice.

Resources For Gamsat Section 2

Quote Generator

The final resource on my list is a quote generator which will help you to generate an unlimited number of quotes on hundreds of topics in a format virtually identical to the real test.

When doing your practice essays I always recommend typing them under timed conditions as in the real thing so you can practice your timing skills and also improve your typing speed and accuracy.

The second thing I recommend is to always write two in a row one directly after the other to replicate test conditions so you can develop the mental agility to quickly switch from one topic to another.

Writing GAMSAT ® practice essays is the most important aspect of preparing for Section 2 of the GAMSAT ® Exam. Regularly writing essays allows you to develop and practise your essay writing skills and is something you should aim to start from early on. It’s important to get into a routine: Whether you aim to type an essay once a week or once a day, every bit counts.

Writing regularly also helps develop your confidence, and prevents having that ‘writer’s block’ moment in the exam.

We’ve prepared a handy GAMSAT ® Essay Writing Guide you can download which includes all the information on this page, as well as some extra tips, some example essays to help you get a head start on your preparation for Section 2 of the GAMSAT ® Exam. Start preparing today!

GAMSAT Essay Writing Tips

Simply writing GAMSAT ® essays is not enough - It needs to be done in a structured fashion to ensure that you get the most out of your preparation. We recommend that you:

  • Get feedback on your essays. It is vital that you get your friends, family, tutors and anyone else to read these essays - ask them to provide criticism and suggestions.
  • Critique your own essays. After every essay you write, read it aloud to yourself and listen to see if it makes sense. Try to mark your own essays -use the list below as a useful guide
  • Start gently. Don’t feel the need to write under time pressure from the word go. It’s more important that you develop and improve your essay writing skills before gradually applying realistic time pressure.
  • Type your practice essays. It’s important that you get accustomed to typing your responses. There is no spell-check function in the GAMSAT ® exam , so practise typing responses into word processors without spelling and grammar corrections. You may also need to work on your typing speed. You will still be able to use provided sheets of paper for planning and brainstorming if necessary.
  • Vary the type of essays that you write. You should make sure you try argumentative, personal reflective essays, fictional creative essays , poetry, and any other medium that can work in the GAMSAT ® exam. The GAMSAT ® exam can throw up unexpected prompts that might be difficult to write in a particular style: it’s important to give yourself the flexibility to deal with anything the exam might throw at you.

A strong GAMSAT ® essay, no matter what structure you choose, should:

  • Be strongly related to the theme of the prompts. The GAMSAT ® is a test of reasoning skills: Your markers want to see how you think. In order to assess this, they need to see how you have thought about the prompts provided. GAMSAT ® essays that are unrelated give the impression of being ‘pre-written’, and are penalised quite heavily.
  • Be well-written and well-structured. Sentences should be clear and concise. Paragraphs should only contain one main idea. Introductions and conclusions should summarise the essay, and not include any information that you do not analyse in your body paragraphs.
  • Be interesting and original. Rather than simply arguing that the theme of the prompts is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, try to come up with something more specific. For example, for a set of prompts about research, rather than arguing that ‘research is good for the development of society’, you could take a more specific approach and argue that ‘research is a male-dominated field that suppresses female voices’.
  • Include detailed critical analysis. Again, your writers want to see how you think, not ‘what you know’. This means pulling your examples apart in great detail. Ask yourself questions, and answer them in your response. What were the motivations behind it? Was there a driving ideology? What were the consequences? What does this show about human society?

GAMSAT Essay Writing Guide

How do you start writing a gamsat essay.

  • Understand the Theme: Read the quote, identify the main theme, and any other related ideas. Your response needs to engage strongly with this - otherwise your markers cannot reward you.
  • Brainstorm Ideas: Build a bank of ideas. Look over many essay prompts, and try to come up with three supporting examples that could be used for the theme. If you can’t think of any, do some research - current affairs, history, literature - anything that is relevant.
  • Create a Thesis: What is your opinion on the theme? Make it clear, concise, and easy to understand.
  • Choose a Structure: Consider what is most appropriate for the theme and explore your options. You might choose an argumentative response with concrete supporting examples, a more reflective response drawing on your own experience, or a fictional response that allows you to explore emotions and psychology.
  • Plan Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph needs to support your thesis, and go into detailed critical analysis. Support your thesis by referring back to your central idea at the beginning and end of each paragraph, and throughout your analysis.
  • Be Clear & Succinct: Write in logical and well-phrased sentences that can be easily understood by a marker who will be reading your essay at a fast pace. Long sentences are not necessarily sophisticated sentences. Think of the great speech-makers. They use concise language. Simple writing is often the most powerful.
  • Review your Essay: Review what you have written and ensure it makes sense. Check for typos and errors of grammar and punctuation. You want to give your marker the best impression possible.

Is GAMSAT Section 2 written or typed?

After the trial of a digital platform for the March and September GAMSAT ® in 2020, ACER decided that all future exams will be conducted digitally. Thus, GAMSAT ® Section 2 is typed, not written. Note that this change has not impacted the total allocated time, and you will still have 65 minutes to complete the two pieces of writing. However, students are now permitted to write in the 5 minutes that were previously allocated solely for planning.

Many students will be used to completing practice essays by hand, and it is important to tailor your practice to the exam context as closely as possible. Note that on the digital interface of the GAMSAT ® exam, there will be no autocorrect function or ‘copy and paste’ functions. Thus, it is important that when practising, you disable the autocorrect feature as well as any automated correction functions of your writing software. Programs with a simple interface like Notepad (and similar alternatives available online) are recommended.

How long are the essays in GAMSAT?

Another consideration with regards to Section 2 preparation is the paragraph/word count you are expected to reach. 400-600 words per essay has typically been used as a rough estimate of what students should aim to achieve under the previous handwritten condition. In contrast, a reasonably fast typers will be able to reach up to 1000 words in a 30-minute essay. Whilst the emphasis should still be on the quality of your writing and ideas, it is still important to keep in mind that you should be aiming for a longer essay than you would under handwritten conditions.

How to Practice for GAMSAT Essay Writing

  • Get into the practice of typing. Whilst many students may be used to texting or typing out their assignments, typing under time pressure is a different skill altogether. The last thing you want is for your typing speed to limit the amount of content you can produce in the exam. Typing your essays under timed conditions will be the best practice in this regard.
  • Make effective use of planning time. It is much easier to write-out and edit your plan on the digital interface. Whilst you’re now permitted to write during the 5-minute planning time at the start, it is advised that you use this time to plan out your essays and perhaps even write out your topic sentences to keep you on track during the writing process.
  • Practice editing. As with planning, editing essays is much easier on a digital interface than in handwritten conditions. Nonetheless, it is important not to spend large chunks of writing time editing an incomplete essay. It is preferable that you aim to complete your essays a few minutes before the writing time ends so that you have time to edit. When editing, look for simple grammatical mistakes as well as changes to words and sentence structure that can increase the depth and clarity of your ideas. It is also a good idea to assess the flow of your essay, and integrate connecting words (thus, however, therefore, furthermore, etc.) to link your ideas and more clearly explicate the relationship between them.

GAMSAT Essay Structure

ACER does not provide any guidelines in regards to an essay structure, minimum word count, or how long your GAMSAT ® Section 2 essays should be. However, a maxim that holds true even for the GAMSAT ® Exam is 'quality over quantity'.

The quality of what you write is much more important than the quantity and as such, you should focus on what you write about and your expression and organisation of ideas. A basic guideline to your GAMSAT ® Essay Structure is:

  • An Introduction
  • 3 Body Paragraphs
  • A Conclusion

Note however that this example structure is not necessarily applicable to every type of essay. If you were to write a creative piece, the structure of your GAMSAT ® Essay could certainly be more flexible. The main factor to take into account is how to best organise your ideas to ensure that your arguments are conveyed logically and coherently. You can practise using our Free GAMSAT ® Quote Generator which has over 90 Section 2 essay prompts, covering 40+ themes.

How many words should a GAMSAT essay be?

As mentioned above, a common piece of advice is to aim for about 400-600 words, but the most important point is to focus on the quality of your essay rather than the quantity. If you can express an idea clearly and effectively in fewer words then do it.

How do you choose a GAMSAT essay style?

There are many GAMSAT ® essay styles to try, and each have their own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The list below is by no means exhaustive but may help provide you with some ideas and styles to trial. You should aim to test different styles and work out what works for you best.

Argumentative Essays

  • Personal Reflective Essays
  • Short Stories

These GAMSAT ® essays follow a basic structure, using an introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You will take a strong central opinion, and introduce it in your introduction. Each body paragraph should contain one supporting example, and detailed critical analysis, in order to defend your argument. These essays:

  • Are usually students’ preferred option.
  • Allow you to analyse political and social themes very effectively.
  • Require a good breadth of knowledge in order to provide three supporting examples.
  • Follow a set structure or formula, and can therefore be easier to get the hang of if you are not as comfortable writing.
  • However, argumentative essays can be difficult if the prompts are about something very personal or introspective, for example, ‘love’.
  • They can also make it more difficult to be interesting and original in your response.

Personal reflective essays

These GAMSAT ® essays allow you to demonstrate your emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and empathy. These are vital qualities to demonstrate in the entrance exam for medical school. Try to avoid a hybrid of argumentative and personal styles: personal essays that take three short anecdotes and discuss them in an introduction/three body paragraphs/conclusion structure do not usually come across as sincere.

Taking one, strong personal experience that is related to the theme of the prompts, and analysing it in detail, is a great way to start. Show your marker what you felt and why you felt that way - demonstrate your emotional and psychological analytical skills. These essays:

  • Are an excellent way of being interesting and original: your experience is your own.
  • Make it easier to demonstrate emotional awareness - It is much easier to provide emotional insight into something with which you have personal experience.
  • Can move your marker. Your marker is a human being! Giving them a personal response gives them a connection to you.
  • Are the least challenging of the non-argumentative essays - most students like to start with these essays before branching into more creative writing.
  • However, it can be difficult to write these essays if you have no experience related to the theme of the prompts. Collecting a ‘bank’ of personal experiences that can be used for various themes is a helpful way of knowing whether you can use a personal reflection for a set of prompts.

Short stories

Writing short stories is an excellent way of standing out. They allow you to show emotional and psychological insight, but without having the restraint of personal experience.

In a short story, try to stick within your own realm of experience. A short story does not have to be a Hollywood Blockbuster: often the simplest plots are those that are the most sincere, touching, and effective. Remember that the point of these essays is not to write a dramatic story. It is to demonstrate your social, emotional, or psychological reasoning skills to your marker. These essays:

  • Require practice. Refine your writing style to be simple, sincere, and not far-fetched.
  • Require creativity! Think of creative ways to describe emotions or situations. Avoid cliches in your descriptions.
  • Should deal with one strong central idea that is related to the theme of the prompts.
  • Can produce outstanding marks. Well-written and thoughtful short stories allow you to demonstrate the sophistication of your expression, your originality, and your analytical skills.

GAMSAT Section 2 Essay Topics

Section 2 of the GAMSAT ® Essay consists of two different essays (usually called Task A and Task B), each in response to their own set of stimuli. These prompts are presented as a set of quotes (usually 5), with each set centred around a common theme.

GAMSAT Section 2 Task A Themes:

Gamsat section 2 task b themes:.

  • Originality

GAMSAT Section 2 Questions

Theme: truth.

  • Gossip, as usual, was one-third right and two-thirds wrong. (L.M. Montgomery, Chronicles of Avonlea)
  • The truth is rarely pure and never simple. (Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest)
  • Truth is a matter of the imagination. (Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness)
  • You don't destroy what you want to acquire in the future. (Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay)
  • To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow - this is a human offering that can border on miraculous. (Elizabeth Gilbert, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage)

Theme: Justice

  • Being good is easy, what is difficult is being just. (Victor Hugo)
  • I don't want tea, I want justice! (Ally Carter, Uncommon Criminals)
  • It is better to risk saving a guilty person than to condemn an innocent one. (Voltaire, Zadig)
  • Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it. (William Penn)
  • Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with men of different languages, remote from your own, who wish like you for a more just and human world. (Hélder Câmara, Spiral Of Violence)

GAMSAT Section 2 Example Essays

Even with all of the above tips and topics, it can be difficult to start writing without an idea of what a GAMSAT ® Essay should look like. That’s why we’ve decided to provide an example essay below with feedback provided by our tutors to help you make a start on your preparation for Section 2 of the GAMSAT ® Exam.

GAMSAT Section 2 Task A Example Essay

Task a example essay question.

  • Don’t forget your great guns, which are the most respectable argument for the rights of kings. (Frederick the Great)
  • The people are that part of the state that does not know what it wants. (G W F Hegel)
  • Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything. (Joseph Stalin)
  • Win or lose, we go shopping after the election. (Imelda Marcos)
  • Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms which have been tried from time to time. (Winston Churchill)

Task A Example Essay: Medium Standard Essay

  • The people are lead to believe that their votes decide the power, however the real power resides with those who count the votes. Whether the power is attained by corruption or manipulation, the people have little say even what they try to stage a backlash. Examples of corruption aren’t hard to find, but the frustrating case of Robert Mugabe is a strong example. Constant broken pre-election promises try to manipulate the people even at a staged constituency. Time and again tyrants pop up to demonstrate clearly how compromised the electoral process can sometimes become.
  • The strings of bad decisions made by Robert Mugabe have devastated Zimbabwe, whilst somehow benefiting him and his family. In 200 President Mugabe enacted the removal of white ownership of farmland. His plan was to give the land to the native Zimbabwean’s to make them more successful and therefor give them more of the power. This was an important promise and made him very popular with his countrymen. During the crossover period, Mugabe’s family ended up with 39 farms, with the rest going to un-experienced Zimbabweans. The result was a complete slump in food production and in return a failing economy for Zimbabwe, forcing them to abandon their currency in 2009. Ironically the white farmers had been very effective in their farming and had bolstered the economy. In the 2010 election, despite being generally despised by many Zimbabweans, Robert Mugabe won another term by a giant 60% of the votes. It seems unlikely he would win reelection given the circumstances. Corruption among the voting officials who were under the control of Mugabe is suspected but few are willing to question his authority.
  • It’s partially expected by citizens of democratic countries that pre-election promises are seldom kept. However when a candidate is making promises that would highly benefit you and your community, it’s hard not to jump on their bandwagon. In the 2013 election, the Labor party promised millions to rural communities to fund different community projects which would have provided stimulation for their economy. However since winning the election and releasing the budget, those promises have been revoked in order to cut costs. Resulting in thousands of rural citizens feeling manipulated by false promises made by the Labor party.
  • Most recently in WA, an alleged 1800 people have voted multiple times at different polling stations in the 2013 election. Before this, thousands of votes had believed to have simply vanished so a new election was to be held, but in light of this new information an additional investigation is being held. This is an example of the people trying to take back the power. Although it is illegal, most would not consider it to be any less morally wrong than corruption or manipulation especially on a huge scales such as the examples of Robert Mugabe and the Labor party. Voting is only a human invention, and it can be easily manipulated just like any other human invention.
  • Tactics of politics are harsh. With emotional and physical tries to power, its not a surprise that votes feel the need to use the same tactics in order to win back the power. Examples can be found all over the globe with Zimbabwe and Australia just scratching the surface. In the words of Joseph Stalin – “Those who cast the votes deiced nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything.”

Task A Example Essay Correction and Feedback

  • This is a well-written essay and appears to make a sound argument by incorporating some well-informed examples.
  • There is no major flaw with the written expression in this essay. While sentences in some cases can be shortened and written in a more direct manner, this is not a major criticism of the essay. There are, however, multiple small errors: ‘people are lead to believe’ should be ‘people are led to believe’; ‘the people have little say even what they try to stage a backlash’ should be ‘the people have little say even when they try to stage a backlash’, amongst others. Whilst these are small details, it’s important to give your marker a strong impression of the quality of your written expression.
  • The structure of the essay also follows the basic argumentative essay structure. One of the main issues that prevents this essay from receiving a higher mark is that the quote that the writer has selected is not compatible with the second example that they have provided. This example talks about a political party changing its tune after an election. It is not clear how it furthers the argument that the electoral process itself is compromised in some way. In argumentative essays, every supporting example should be defending and strengthening the thesis. Irrelevant examples and analysis is very difficult for a marker to reward. In fact, they can actually weaken, rather than strengthen, an argument, as they distract the reader from the central idea.
  • The content of this essay appears informed. The writer, however, has made a crucial mistake in saying that the Labour party won the 2013 election. It was the Liberal party. If this mistake were made once in the text it could be dismissed as a typographical error under the time pressure; however, it is repeated.
  • This essay could also go to a more sophisticated level of critical analysis. The details of the examples could be teased out to further support the central example. For example, in the third body paragraph, what are the consequences of these votes being ‘lost’? Democracy is being compromised and people’s votes are being silenced: imagine living in a country where voting is compulsory, yet your vote is not counted. Is this a betrayal of the people? How is it an example of the people trying to take back power? Perhaps because they are demanding accountability from their democratic government. Is this, in itself, promising? Namely, whilst voting is open to corruption, in a true democracy, the people have a right to freedom of speech and to transparency of government. Does the true spirit of democracy, then, help to defeat the possible corruption of the voting process?
  • Going into this level of detail would demonstrate stronger reasoning skills. Markers want to see how a candidate thinks, and how deeply they think - not simply ‘what they know’.
  • This essay is quite good, and it has chosen a challenging argument to present. However, it can be improved by a better selection of content that goes directly to the argument that the writer is trying to make.

GAMSAT Section 2 Task B Example Essay

Task b example essay question.

  • Creativity is the defeat of habit by originality. (Arthur Koestler)
  • Create like a god; command like a king; work like a slave. (Constantin Brancusi)
  • Truth and reality in art do not arise until you no longer understand what you are doing. (Henri Matisse)
  • You are lost the instant you know what the result will be. (Juan Gris)
  • An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail. (Edwin Land)

Task B Example Essay - High Standard Essay

  • Creation is a power no mortal man should be gifted with. And it’s exactly that. A gift. It can give rise to ugly life forms capable of destruction yet it can also wondrously design and improve our small insignificant lives. A gift not bestowed upon me and perhaps for good reason.
  • The power of creation is given to those who sit on the outskirts of our society, like outcasts and the insane. These poor souls, if poor is the best fitting word, let their minds wander aimlessly and ironically discover and churn out fantastical and absurd ideas. How blissful.
  • Desperation summons creative too. When we are pushed to the extremes and our normal ways fail, new ideas spawn almost spontaneously. When there is no other option but to be creative, we find ourselves stumble upon the new and the amazing.
  • Regardless, there is a very good reason being creative is not easy. It's not for everyone. Chaos would conspire. Creativity is power. Power corrupts the mind. Corruption is fatal. But just for a minute, let's indulge and pretend we possessed the power of creation. What to do? What should I create? I would not create equality amongst equality amongst race or world peace or a cure for aids. That’s not out of the hexagon enough for me. It's not that I do not support world peace or todays real issues, but someone with a smaller capacity for creation can do that. A child. A dying war veteran. I’m going to create something unfathomable. It's my duty, my unspoken agreement to create something for more unimaginable. Good or evil? Black or white? The answers to these questions are never easy.
  • Who knows. Let drugs and hallucinogens do their work there. Because I can’t create anything of such a nature. I’m skin and bone. Not god. Not even a demi-god. I’m not burdened by the gift of creation. But god knows someone is. What a frustration to wait for the day they realize, what a terror to see what follows.

Task B Example Essay Correction and Feedback

  • This essay is challenging and different. The written expression in this essay, whilst simple, is powerful. It can be read as a form of dramatic monologue and the writer has carefully selected each word and sentence length to ensure that the essay is read in a dramatic tone. It resembles speeches by accomplished orators: simple and moving. The purpose of many essays is to convince the reader. It is much easier to convince someone if they can understand it; even easier to convince someone if they are moved by it.
  • The structure of this essay is almost similar to a free verse poem in that there is no real structure; however, there is cohesion between paragraphs. The writer’s ideas on the issue are easy to follow.
  • This essay is considered a high standard mainly because of the content and the original perspective on the theme. The writer reflects upon what creativity is, but in a way that is not often executed by students under strict exam conditions.
  • Each paragraph of the essay covers a different twist on what creativity means. It challenges the reader to consider the writer’s opinions and stands out from other essays. Also note that although this essay is a high standard response, the length of the response is much shorter than the other examples. This is a good demonstration of how quality is more important than quantity.
  • As with every essay, however, there are aspects that could be improved.
  • There are simple errors throughout: these detract from the writer’s otherwise powerful and strong sense of voice.
  • One other important way in which this essay could improve would be to have a stronger central idea. The essay clearly focussed on creativity, and different interpretations of it. However, unifying the essay behind one perspective, such as the danger of creativity, could make this response more effective.

The Ultimate GAMSAT FAQ Guide: Answering Your Top Questions

Our GAMSAT Prep Experts: Guiding You to Success

What is gamsat.

GAMSAT is a standardised test designed by ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research, to help in the selection of candidates applying for graduate-entry medical programmes and health professional programmes (medicine, dentistry, podiatry, pharmacy and veterinary sciences) in Australia, Ireland, and the UK.

What are the entry requirements for the GAMSAT?

There are no entry requirements for the GAMSAT. However, to be eligible to sit the GAMSAT, applicants must have completed a Bachelor or an undergraduate honours degree. Those enrolled in their penultimate (second to the last) or final year of undergraduate study at the time of sitting the test are likewise eligible to sit GAMSAT. For the entry requirements of different medical schools, visit the following pages: Australian Medical Schools , UK Medical School , Irish Medical Schools

When is the best time to sit the GAMSAT?

Some may suggest to sit the exam in the third year/penultimate year of an undergraduate degree. Of course, a more general response would be: Once you have adequately prepared for the exam - including having sat some mock exams - then that would be the ideal time to sit the real exam.

When is the deadline for registering for the GAMSAT and until when are the GAMSAT scores valid?

Visit the following pages for more information: GAMSAT Registration and GAMSAT Currency of Results

Where can I find GAMSAT dates and test centres?

Visit GAMSAT Test Centres for details.

How are the GAMSAT Scores calculated?

Please visit our GAMSAT Scores page to learn how the overall scores are calculated, what are considered average, good and high GAMSAT scores and when the results are released in Australia, Ireland and the UK.

What GAMSAT Scores and GPA do I need to get into medical school?

Medical schools have different requirements for entry. Visit Australian Medical Schools , Irish Medical Schools and UK Medical Schools for the list of graduate entry medicine (GEM) programmes offered by various universities and their required GAMSAT scores and GPAs. While some universities are able to provide information as to what GPA and GAMSAT score they are accepting, some universities are unable to provide definite information because of their unique method of assessment. For more accurate information, we recommend that you also visit the individual university's website.

What is the difference between the GAMSAT and the MCAT?

GAMSAT is divided into three sections as follows:

  • Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Written Communication
  • Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences

MCAT is divided into four sections as follows:

  • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior

Here is what is unique about the GAMSAT in comparison to the MCAT: GAMSAT Section 1 has poetry, drama, graphs and tables, while none of these is part of the CARS (Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills) section on the MCAT. Section 2 on the GAMSAT has two written essays, Writing Task A & Task B, while essays are no longer part of the MCAT.

Are the science questions on the GAMSAT same as those on the MCAT?

The only similarity between the GAMSAT and MCAT exams is the basic syllabus for GAMSAT Section 3 (science review). MCAT sciences have now become more reasoning-based and the questions test one's ability to interrelate concepts between the different sciences. Our MCAT videos (online subscription only) cover about 90% of the content you need to know for GAMSAT physics, biology, general and organic chemistry. MCAT now covers biochemistry while the GAMSAT may not. Half of your GAMSAT science preparation is to review information and the other half should be to practice realistic GAMSAT problems, which you can get from the four ACER booklets and Gold Standard GAMSAT Practice Tests . Our Gold Standard GAMSAT textbooks in colour teach all sections of the GAMSAT from the very basics up to GAMSAT level with comprehensive teaching in the humanities, essay writing and basic GAMSAT sciences. All pages have been revised and there are hundreds of new MCQs. There is a full-length GAMSAT practice test with scaled score and worked solutions. All the questions are unique GAMSAT-type questions. You can try out our Free GAMSAT Practice Test to experience our ability to ask GAMSAT-style questions and access many Free GAMSAT Resources .

What is the recommended study time for students?

We recommend, on average, 3-6 hours/day for 3-6 months. As every student is different, it would also depend on your existing knowledge as well as your past study experience and habits.

Achieve GAMSAT Success with Our Trusted Study Materials

Resolving Common Issues: Troubleshooting GAMSAT Prep Problems

I tried logging in as a "gold standard owner" on gamsat-prep using my access card but it does not work. what can you suggest i do.

It is important to follow the steps below in order to resolve this issue:

Students sometimes type their access code incorrectly. A common mistake made is to type in the number 0 instead of the capital letter O. A repeated typing error can block you from registering.

Please double check the access code and ensure you are not using a lower case letter l instead of capital letter I. Once you have confirmed the access code, you can either try again with another computer or erase the cookies on your current computer before inputting the code again.

  • If your textbook was purchased second hand, then the code may have already been used. You can purchase an access code for a fee by logging into your GAMSAT-Prep account and clicking on Gold Standard Textbook Owner. Once you click on the link to register your book, you will be redirected to the members page where you can purchase the one-time access.
  • If you are still experiencing problems registering your book, please send us an email at [email protected] and we will endeavor to resolve this within one business day.

While waiting for our response, we suggest you sign up for a free GAMSAT-Prep.com account in order to access one hour of free online videos and other free resources, such as the physics equation list, organic chemistry summary, and much more!

The False Narrative of Settler Colonialism

The rise of an academic theory and its obsession with Israel

Protesters

O n October 7 , Hamas killed four times as many Israelis in a single day as had been killed in the previous 15 years of conflict. In the months since, protesters have rallied against Israel’s retaliatory invasion of Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians. But a new tone of excitement and enthusiasm could be heard among pro-Palestinian activists from the moment that news of the attacks arrived, well before the Israeli response began. Celebrations of Hamas’s exploits are familiar sights in Gaza and the West Bank, Cairo and Damascus; this time, they spread to elite college campuses, where Gaza-solidarity encampments became ubiquitous this past spring. Why?

The answer is that, long before October 7, the Palestinian struggle against Israel had become widely understood by academic and progressive activists as the vanguard of a global battle against settler colonialism, a struggle also waged in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries created by European settlement. In these circles, Palestine was transformed into a standard reference point for every kind of social wrong, even those that seem to have no connection to the Middle East.

One of the most striking things about the ideology of settler colonialism is the central role played by Israel, which is often paired with the U.S. as the most important example of settler colonialism’s evils. Many Palestinian writers and activists have adopted this terminology. In his 2020 book, The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine , the historian Rashid Khalidi writes that the goal of Zionism was to create a “white European settler colony.” For the Palestinian intellectual Joseph Massad, Israel is a product of “European Jewish Settler-Colonialism,” and the “liberation” referred to in the name of the Palestine Liberation Organization is “liberation from Settler-Colonialism.”

The cover of On Settler Colonialism

Western activists and academics have leaned heavily on the idea. Opposition to building an oil pipeline under a Sioux reservation was like the Palestinian cause in that it “makes visible the continuum of systems of subjugation and expropriation across liberal democracies and settler-colonial regimes.” When the city of Toronto evicted a homeless encampment from a park, it was like Palestine because both are examples of “ethnic cleansing” and “colonial ‘domicide,’ making Indigenous people homeless on their homelands.” Health problems among Native Americans can be understood in terms of Palestine, because the “hyper-visible Palestine case …  provides a unique temporal lens for understanding settler colonial health determinants more broadly.” Pollution, too, can be understood through a Palestinian lens, according to the British organization Friends of the Earth, because Palestine demonstrates that “the world is an unequal place” where “marginalised and vulnerable people bear the brunt of injustice.”

Although Israel fails in obvious ways to fit the model of settler colonialism, it has become the standard reference point because it offers theorists and activists something that the United States does not: a plausible target. It is hard to imagine America or Canada being truly decolonized, with the descendants of the original settlers returning to the countries from which they came and Native peoples reclaiming the land. But armed struggle against Israel has been ongoing since it was founded, and Hamas and its allies still hope to abolish the Jewish state “between the river and the sea.” In the contemporary world, only in Israel can the fight against settler colonialism move from theory to practice.

T he concept of settler colonialism was developed in the 1990s by theorists in Australia, Canada, and the U.S., as a way of linking social evils in these countries today—such as climate change, patriarchy, and economic inequality—to their origin in colonial settlement. In the past decade, settler colonialism has become one of the most important concepts in the academic humanities, the subject of hundreds of books and thousands of papers, as well as college courses on topics such as U.S. history, public health, and gender studies.

Read: The curious rise of settler colonialism and Turtle Island

For the academic field of settler-colonial studies, the settlement process is characterized by European settlers discovering a land that they consider “terra nullius,” the legal property of no one; their insatiable hunger for expansion that fills an entire continent; and the destruction of Indigenous peoples and cultures. This model, drawn from the history of Anglophone colonies such as the U.S. and Australia, is regularly applied to the history of Israel even though it does not include any of these hallmarks.

When modern Zionist settlement in what is now Israel began in the 1880s, Palestine was a province of the Ottoman empire, and after World War I, it was ruled by the British under a mandate from the League of Nations. Far from being “no one’s land,” Jews could settle there only with the permission of an imperial government, and when that permission was withdrawn—as it fatefully was in 1939, when the British sharply limited Jewish immigration on the eve of the Holocaust—they had no recourse. Far from expanding to fill a continent, as in North America and Australia, the state of Israel today is about the size of New Jersey. The language, culture, and religion of the Arab peoples remain overwhelmingly dominant: 76 years after Israel was founded, it is still the only Jewish country in the region, among 22 Arab countries, from Morocco to Iraq.

Most important, the Jewish state did not erase or replace the people already living in Palestine, though it did displace many of them. Here the comparison between European settlement in North America and Jewish settlement in Israel is especially inapt. In the decades after Europeans arrived in Massachusetts, the Native American population of New England declined from about 140,000 to 10,000, by one estimate . In the decades after 1948, the Arab population of historic Palestine more than quintupled, from about 1.4 million to about 7.4 million. The persistence of the conflict in Israel-Palestine is due precisely to the coexistence of two peoples in the same land—as opposed to the classic sites of settler colonialism, where European settlers decimated Native peoples.

In the 21st century, the clearest examples of ongoing settler colonialism can probably be found in China. In 2023, the United Nations Human Rights office reported that the Chinese government had compelled nearly 1 million Tibetan children to attend residential schools “aimed at assimilating Tibetan people culturally, religiously and linguistically.” Forcing the next generation of Tibetans to speak Mandarin is part of a long-term effort to Sinicize the region, which also includes encouraging Han Chinese to settle there and prohibiting public displays of traditional Buddhist faith.

China has mounted a similar campaign against the Uyghur people in the northwestern province of Xinjiang. Since 2017, more than 1 million Uyghur Muslims have been detained in what the Chinese government calls vocational training centers, which other countries describe as detention or reeducation camps. The government is also seeking to bring down Uyghur birth rates through mass sterilization and involuntary birth control.

These campaigns include every element of settler colonialism as defined by academic theorists. They aim to replace an existing people and culture with a new one imported from the imperial metropole, using techniques frequently described as genocidal in the context of North American history. Tibet’s residential schools are a tool of forced assimilation, like the ones established for Native American children in Canada and the United States in the 19th century. And some scholars of settler colonialism have drawn these parallels, acknowledging, in the words of the anthropologist Carole McGranahan, “that an imperial formation is as likely to be Chinese, communist, and of the twentieth or twenty-first centuries as it is to be English, capitalist, and of the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries.”

Yet Tibet and Xinjiang—like India’s rule in Kashmir, and the Indonesian occupation of East Timor from 1975 to 1999—occupy a tiny fraction of the space devoted to Israel-Palestine on the mental map of settler-colonial studies. Some of the reasons for this are practical. The academic discipline mainly flourishes in English-speaking countries, and its practitioners usually seem to be monolingual, making it necessary to focus on countries where sources are either written in English or easily available in translation. This rules out any place where a language barrier is heightened by strict government censorship, like China. Just as important, settler-colonial theorists tend to come from the fields of anthropology and sociology rather than history, area studies, and international relations, where they would be exposed to a wider range of examples of past and present conflict.

But the focus on Israel-Palestine isn’t only a product of the discipline’s limitations. It is doctrinal. Academics and activists find adding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to other causes powerfully energizing, a way to give a local address to a struggle that can otherwise feel all too abstract. The price of collapsing together such different causes, however, is that it inhibits understanding of each individual cause. Any conflict that fails to fit the settler-colonial model must be made to fit.

I srael also fails to fit the model of settler colonialism in another key way: It defies the usual division between foreign colonizers and Indigenous people. In the discourse of settler colonialism, Indigenous peoples aren’t simply those who happen to occupy a territory before Europeans discovered it. Rather, indigeneity is a moral and spiritual status, associated with qualities such as authenticity, selflessness, and wisdom. These values stand as a reproof to settler ways of being, which are insatiably destructive. And the moral contrast between settler and indigene comes to overlap with other binaries—white and nonwhite, exploiter and exploited, victor and victim.

Until recently, Palestinian leaders preferred to avoid the language of indigeneity, seeing the implicit comparison between themselves and Native Americans as defeatist. In an interview near the end of his life, in 2004, PLO Chair Yasser Arafat declared, “We are not Red Indians.” But today’s activists are more eager to embrace the Indigenous label and the moral valences that go with it, and some theorists have begun to recast Palestinian identity in ecological, spiritual, and aesthetic terms long associated with Native American identity. The American academic Steven Salaita has written that “Palestinian claims to life” are based in having “a culture indivisible from their surroundings, a language of freedom concordant to the beauty of the land.” Jamal Nabulsi of the University of Queensland writes that “Palestinian Indigenous sovereignty is in and of the land. It is grounded in an embodied connection to Palestine and articulated in Palestinian ways of being, knowing, and resisting on and for this land.”

This kind of language points to an aspect of the concept of indigeneity that is often tacitly overlooked in the Native American context: its irrationalism. The idea that different peoples have incommensurable ways of being and knowing, rooted in their relationship to a particular landscape, comes out of German Romantic nationalism. Originating in the early 19th century in the work of philosophers such as Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Johann Gottfried Herder, it eventually degenerated into the blood-and-soil nationalism of Nazi ideologues such as Richard Walther Darré, who in 1930 hymned what might be called an embodied connection to Germany: “The German soul, with all its warmness, is rooted in its native landscape and has, in a sense, always grown out of it … Whoever takes the natural landscape away from the German soul, kills it.”

For Darré, this rootedness in the land meant that Germans could never thrive in cities, among the “rootless ways of thinking of the urbanite.” The rootless urbanite par excellence, for Nazi ideology, was of course the Jew. For Salaita, the exaltation of Palestinian indigeneity leads to the very same conclusion about “Zionists,” who usurp the land but can never be vitally rooted in it: “In their ruthless schema, land is neither pleasure nor sustenance. It is a commodity … Having been anointed Jewish, the land ceases to be dynamic. It is an ideological fabrication with fixed characteristics.”

In this way, anti-Zionism converges with older patterns of anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish thinking. It is true, of course, that criticism of Israel is not inherently anti-Semitic. Virtually anything that an Israeli government does is likely to be harshly criticized by many Israeli Jews themselves. But it is also true that anti-Semitism is not simply a matter of personal prejudice against Jews, existing on an entirely different plane from politics. The term anti-Semitism was coined in Germany in the late 19th century because the old term, Jew hatred , sounded too instinctive and brutal to describe what was, in fact, a political ideology—an account of the way the world works and how it should be changed.

Wilhelm Marr, the German writer who popularized the word, complained in his 1879 book, The Victory of Judaism Over Germanism , that “the Jewish spirit and Jewish consciousness have overpowered the world.” That spirit, for Marr, was materialism and selfishness, “profiteering and usury.” Anti-Semitic political parties in Europe attacked “Semitism” in the same way that socialists attacked capitalism. The saying “Anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools,” used by the German left at this time, recognized the structural similarity between these rival worldviews.

The identification of Jews with soulless materialism made sense to 19th-century Europeans because it translated one of the oldest doctrines of Christianity into the language of modern politics. The apostle Paul, a Jew who became a follower of Jesus, explained the difference between his old faith and his new one by identifying Judaism with material things (the circumcision of the flesh, the letter of the law) and Christianity with spiritual things—the circumcision of the heart, a new law “written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

Simon Sebag Montefiore: The decolonization narrative is dangerous and false

Today this characterization of Jews as stubborn, heartless, and materialistic is seldom publicly expressed in the language of Christianity, as in the Middle Ages, or in the language of race, as in the late 19th century. But it is quite respectable to say exactly the same thing in the language of settler colonialism. As the historian David Nirenberg has written, “We live in an age in which millions of people are exposed daily to some variant of the argument that the challenges of the world they live in are best explained in terms of ‘Israel,’” except that today, Israel refers not to the Jewish people but to the Jewish state.

When those embracing the ideology of settler colonialism think about political evil, Israel is the example that comes instinctively to hand, just as Jews were for anti-Semitism and Judaism was for Christianity. Perhaps the most troubling reactions to the October 7 attacks were those of college students convinced that the liberation of Palestine is the key to banishing injustice from the world. In November 2023, for instance, Northwestern University’s student newspaper published a letter signed by 65 student organizations—including the Rainbow Alliance, Ballet Folklórico Northwestern, and All Paws In, which sends volunteers to animal shelters—defending the use of the slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” This phrase looks forward to the disappearance of any form of Jewish state between the Mediterranean and the Jordan, but the student groups denied that this entails “murder and genocide.” Rather, they wrote, “When we say from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free, we imagine a world free of Islamophobia, antisemitism, anti-Blackness, militarism, occupation and apartheid.”

As a political program, this is nonsensical. How could dismantling Israel bring about the end of militarism in China, Russia, or Iran? How could it lead to the end of anti-Black racism in America, or anti-Muslim prejudice in India? But for the ideology of settler colonialism, actual political conflicts become symbolic battles between light and darkness, and anyone found on the wrong side is a fair target. Young Americans today who celebrate the massacre of Israelis and harass their Jewish peers on college campuses are not ashamed of themselves for the same reason that earlier generations were not ashamed to persecute and kill Jews—because they have been taught that it is an expression of virtue.

GAMSAT Syllabus for 2024

gamsat essay book

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on the GAMSAT syllabus! If you're planning to take the GAMSAT, you're likely aware that it's not just another exam. The GAMSAT is a test that goes beyond mere fact-recall and instead challenges your understanding, analytical skills, and critical thinking.

Is there a syllabus for the GAMSAT?

The short answer is no, not in the traditional sense. Unlike other standardized tests that come with a fixed syllabus, the GAMSAT tests a broad range of skills and knowledge areas. This makes it all the more important to have a structured approach to your preparation. However, we've taken the initiative to analyse years' worth of GAMSAT questions to draft a comprehensive syllabus for Sections 1, 2, and 3, providing you with a targeted roadmap for your studies.

GAMSAT Study Syllabus for 2024

Remember having a solid idea of the GAMSAT Syllabus will help you have a laser focus approach which is very crucial in GAMSAT Prep.

GAMSAT Section 1 Syllabus

While there is no set ‘GAMSAT Syllabus,’ there is a targeted approach to studying Section 1 that we at Fraser’s have tested and refined over the last 12 years. The difficulty with Section 1 is reading comprehension. When one reads a passage and picks an answer, one rarely thinks analytically about the mechanical processes that underpin one’s decision-making choices.

We have created a Section 1 checklist, or syllabus, that will strategically allow you to build the comprehension skills that people often need to work on. Our Section 1 GAMSAT syllabus lies under three domains:

  • ‍ Understanding the Question Design: Know what each question aims to test.
  • Taking a Strategic Approach: Learn how to sift through the information effectively.
  • Understanding the Prompts: Become proficient in dissecting the questions to understand what they're really asking.

Download our complete GAMSAT Syllabus to get deeper insight into the domains and also the curriculum we use at Fraser’s to navigate Section 1 of GAMSAT.

GAMSAT Section 2 Syllabus

ACER distinctly rewards three broad categories in their marking for GAMSAT Section 2 . These are Ideas, Structure and Expression. These categories are reflected in the Section 2 syllabus we have designed. By taking you stepwise through each part of the ” rubric ” you should have the ability to build deep and meaningful Section 2 essays .

Section 2 Syllabus Checklist

GAMSAT Section 3 Syllabus

As you go about studying for Section 3 , you need to avoid falling into the content trap of pouring over facts, rules, and theorems. Without doubt the GAMSAT Australia structure will punish you for rigid frameworks in your approach and understanding of scientific concepts. With that in mind there is an amount of concepts that need to be covered in order to maximise your familiarity with GAMSAT exam questions. We have constructed a comprehensive GAMSAT preparation book for Biology , Chemistry , Physics , and Maths .

There is no strict time limit or overarching structure that you should adhere to but you should really aim to have ticked off most of these areas before March or September. In particular, don’t neglect the topics in Section 2 (many students rush into Section 3 ) remember you stand to improve your writing the most.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How to prepare for the gamsat.

A structured approach is key to GAMSAT success. Organizing your study around a detailed syllabus helps you manage time and focus on areas that need improvement. For a quick start guide, read Getting Started on GAMSAT Prep: 5 Key Things to Know .

What level of science do you need for the GAMSAT?

To succeed in the GAMSAT, it is important to have year 12 academic knowledge in GAMSAT Physics and university-level knowledge in GAMSAT Chemistry and Biology.

How Can I Study for the GAMSAT with No Science Background?

Don't worry if you come from a non-science background, you can still excel in the GAMSAT . In fact, your background might give you an edge in Sections 1 and 2, which focus on humanities and written communication.

However, Section 3 does require some scientific knowledge. You'll benefit from a structured study plan that covers key concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. It's critical to balance your time between understanding these concepts and practice GAMSAT questions to get comfortable with the exam's logic.

Do You Need Chemistry for the GAMSAT?

Chemistry makes up about 40% of Section 3, so it's essential but not in the way you might think. GAMSAT doesn't test your rote memorization of chemistry facts; instead, it assesses how well you apply chemistry concepts in problem-solving scenarios.

For example, you won't be directly asked about electron configurations. Instead, you might be asked to determine a particular electron configuration amongst unfamiliar information or graphs, which requires critical thinking and deductive skills, as well as a basic understanding of electron configuration.

Is Maths Important for GAMSAT Section 3?

Many students underestimate the importance of mathematics when it comes to the GAMSAT exam. While it's true that there are no explicit mathematics questions on the GAMSAT, ignoring maths would be a grave oversight. Why? Because maths is essentially the language of scientific analysis.

For excelling in Section 3, maths holds a pivotal role. Learn how maths can be your secret weapon for a strong Section 3 performance .

My Bookshelf, Myself

A crowded bookshelf of books, photos, trinkets and postcards.

By Margaret Renkl

Ms. Renkl is a contributing Opinion writer who covers flora, fauna, politics and culture in the American South.

My husband, Haywood, reached retirement age this summer, but instead of actually retiring, he decided to stay on and teach part time. I work from home, alone in a silent house, and I am thrilled to have more time with the person I like best in all the world. The only downside was his stuff. When it’s time to give up his classroom, what does a veteran English teacher do with 37 years’ worth of posters and three-ring binders and author photos and various bringing-literature-to-life aids? What does he do with all the books?

Whatever teaching materials his colleagues couldn’t use, Haywood brought home, along with all the books, to a house already piled to the rafters with the belongings we inherited when our parents died . It was no big deal to hang the pictures in my husband’s home office, to lean the “Moby Dick”-era harpoon in a corner, but the books stymied us. Every bookcase in the house — and there are a lot of bookcases in this house — was already stuffed beyond budging.

One son and his sweetheart carried off three large cartons, mostly duplicates of books we already owned. The rest of the classroom books sat in boxes while we tried to figure out what to do with them.

People have been arguing that print is dead, or about to be dead, for at least half my husband’s teaching career. It is not dead in this house. We write in books. We dogear pages and underline passages and draw little stars in the margins. To read a book after my husband has read it is to have a window into his curious and wide-ranging mind.

Before the objections commence, let me say that I am 100 percent in favor of every kind of reading there is: e-books, audiobooks, Braille books, graphic books, you name it. I’m for it all.

My husband and all three of our children borrow audiobooks and e-books by the hundreds from our public library. They read on various electronic devices, moving seamlessly from laptop to e-reader to phone app. It’s much more convenient than what I do, which is carry books around in my bag, from which they sometimes leave and do not return. How many books have I lost in airports? I once lost two copies of Richard Powers’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Overstory,” one right after another, on the same book tour. Thank heaven for airport bookshops.
