Since you don’t have years of professional experience, hiring managers will understand when you don’t have that, which is why they will be looking at your academic history. They will be wondering how you have applied yourself in college both inside and outside of the classroom.

As mentioned above, college is full of opportunities to have enriching experiences. Take advantage of them — they will greatly help you not only by filling out those blank spots on your resume but also by giving you something to stand out from the rest of the competition .

Hiring managers and recruiters will be looking for signs of maturity, self-motivation, and work ethic . Keep these elements in mind as you decide how best to sell yourself based on your college experiences.

To write a college student’s resume, you should start with a resume header that includes your contact information and then go into your resume objective statement. Your top claim to fame is your educational experience and the extracurricular activities you were involved with.

Here’s a more detailed list of what each section of your resume should include:

Resume header . Your resume header should include your contact information. Open with your first and last name, which should be a slightly larger size or otherwise emphasized above all else. Include your location ([City, State] is fine), phone number, and professional email address. If you have a LinkedIn or an online portfolio , feel free to include a link to those here as well.

Important tip: Never put your contact information into an actual header on your word processing software. Some applicant tracking systems (robots that parse resumes to weed out unqualified candidates) can’t read the information in a header.

If the ATS can’t find your contact information, your resume will be thrown out before it even reaches a human reader .

Resume objective statement . We normally steer job-seekers away from resume objectives toward resume summary statements .

However, it’s perfectly appropriate for a college student to use a resume objective instead. Be sure to keep it short (1-3 sentences), include keywords from the job description, and state your relevant skills and career goals.

That being said, if you have substantial or impressive work/internship experience under your belt that truly makes you perfect for the position, opt for a resume summary statement that emphasizes your qualifications and expresses your value to the employer.

Education . Depending on how valuable you find your education section as compared to your experience section, you can swap the order around. We put education third based on the assumption that it’s your most valuable asset at the moment.

Your education section should always include the following information:

Name/Location of the school you attended

Dates attended, date graduated, or anticipated date of graduation

Name of your major/degree

The rest of the information is optional, but more is usually better (especially if the rest of your resume is light):

GPA (if it’s over 3.5)

Minor (if relevant)

Academic honors (Latin titles, Dean’s List , Honors Programs, etc.)

Merit scholarships

Publications and/or research

If you really want to beef up your education section, you can also include more details about relevant coursework . This can be a great way to incorporate keywords from the job description and showcase that you have solid foundational knowledge.

Experience . Once you’ve progressed in your career, this will be a history dedicated to your work history, but for now, keep the heading more open-ended by calling it something like “Relevant Experience.” The reason why this heading works is because it allows you to put down a whole host of experiences in just one section. Items you can put here include:

Work experience (summer jobs, part-time work, etc.)

Internships

Volunteer work

Freelancing experience

Relevant coursework (if you didn’t include it in your education section already)

Study abroad

Club membership/leadership positions

In general, you should keep things in reverse chronological order (the most recent stuff first). Always be sure to quantify your accomplishments whenever possible. Make it easy for a reader to see what value you added to each experience you were a part of.

Extracurriculars. If you’re a part of one or many extracurricular activities, it might be worth including a separate section detailing your involvement with each. Be sure to highlight the key skills you picked up from each experience to show how it relates to the job you’re applying for.

Skills . You’ve certainly acquired some skills during your time in college. Try to give a healthy mix of hard skills and soft skills . Hard skills are those you must be taught, and be tested or measured in some way. Soft skills refer to the intangible, interpersonal qualities that make you great to work with.

Where you can, add a bit of detail to flesh out each skill more fully. For example, if you put down “HTML” as a skill, give a brief description like “wrote webpages during a 3-month internship with XYZ Inc.”

Also, try to make sure that each soft skill you list comes with a correlating piece of data in your experience section. For instance, if you write that you have excellent communication skills , there better be some proof of those skills in action elsewhere on your resume.

Hobbies and interests . If you’re still not at a full page , you can consider adding relevant hobbies and interests. Even something seemingly irrelevant, like a love of working on miniature models, can paint a picture of a candidate who regularly hones her attention to detail in her free time.

Remember, every resume should be job-specific . You should b e tailoring it to each job you apply to. This will help you get noticed by hiring managers.

When writing a college student resume, you should include action verbs to help show what you did and be sure to keep your resume relevant to the job you are applying to. Here are some more tips to keep in mind when writing yours:

Use action verbs. Action verbs help you show a potential employer what you did. Some example action verbs to use are:

Proofread. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is sending your resume in without proofreading it first. Take an extra couple of minutes and read through your resume for any spelling or grammar mistakes. You can even have a friend or a professor look over it to catch anything you might have missed.

To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 23 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Gordon College, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 23.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Gordon College considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

This school offers nearly open admissions, which means they give almost every student an offer of admission. To be safe, you should aim for a 1098 SAT or a 23 ACT or higher . If you can achieve this, you're pretty much guaranteed a spot in the incoming class.

There may be more than one catalog available from the Gordon College system e-catalog Gateway at a time. If there is more than one, you will see a dropdown box toward the top of the page with the name of the current catalog. Clicking the dropdown box provides access to other available catalogs. Selecting an alternate catalog will load it into the Gateway. If you do not see the dropdown box, then only a single catalog is currently published.

You may add information from any of the available catalogs to your own personal Personal Catalog . See below to learn more about Using the Personal Catalog Feature .

The Catalog Search (shown at the top of the navigation) allows quick retrieval of catalog content that matches your interests.

To use the Catalog Search , simply enter a search keyword or phrase and press ENTER. The search will find any matching content in the catalog including courses, programs, school/colleges, departments or other narrative content.

Search options are available by clicking on the Advanced Search link below the regular search form or by clicking the Modify Search Options link after performing a search. The search options offer more precise searching of the catalog content.

To limit your search to only specific types of catalog content, check only the checkboxes for content categories you wish to include in your search.

Check the " Whole Word/Phrase " check box to search for an exact match for a keyword or phrase. For instance, entering "bio" will only return hits in which the term "bio" stands alone; it will not return any instances of the term "biology". The same is true if you enter a phrase.

Click " Show Prefix List " to display a list of all course prefixes available in the catalog. You may enter a keyword phrase that includes a course prefix and code (like "ENG 101") to better locate a specific course. The closest available matches will be returned first.

Click the Search button to perform the search.

You may easily browse through the catalogs by using the different navigation links on the left side of the page. Each catalog may have its own distinct set of navigation links.

Some links may display pages about the catalog or other related information. Other links may display listings of courses or programs within the catalog. These navigation links may display other information that is broken down by various methods such as by school/colleges, by departments, or by program, or course types.

Some pages may show " Go to Information... " links following a school/college or department which, when clicked, will display more information about that school/college or department.

Course and program titles are almost always shown as links. Clicking on a course title will display course information below the course title about the course and a link to Add to Personal Catalog (course information may be shown in a pop up window if you have an older browser). Clicking on a program title will display all the related information for the program as well as the Add program to Personal Catalog link.

Clicking on the Add to Personal Catalog link will add information to your Personal Catalog for later retrieval. See below to learn more about Using the Personal Catalog Feature.

FlashPoint™ Links

Some school/colleges, departments, programs, and courses may have FlashPoint Links associated with them that may be a text link or a click-able graphic. These FlashPoint Links are links to an additional digital resource. The digital resource may be another web page, a text document, audio, video, or many other types of media and may require a special browser plug-in.

To view a FlashPoint Link, simply click on it. All FlashPoint Links will be displayed in a new pop up window.

To print a page click the print link. The " Print Friendly " version will open up with just the content of the page in it (no navigation or header). If you click the print link on a " Print Friendly " page the browser will popup with the print dialog allowing you to print that page.

Problems with Gateway Print Links

If your browser does not support the print link you may need to use the operating system or web browser's built in print functions instead.

Feature

You may add items to your own personal Personal Catalog as you browse through the online catalogs. The Personal Catalog feature will retain a list of courses, programs, pages, divisions and saved searches that you have found interesting and wish to save for future visits to the online Gordon College catalogs.

To add items click the Add to Personal Catalog link or star icon next to the item in which you are interested.  This will open a new popup window that displays all items currently in your Personal Catalog .

You may remove items from your Personal Catalog by selecting the checkboxes next to them and clicking the Remove button.

Note : Items suffixed with the text [From Previous Catalog] are from older, outdated catalogs that are no longer available. You will need to search within newer catalogs to find alternative information to replace them.

The Personal Catalog feature is based on an account system. You must sign up in order to permanently store items in the Personal Catalog feature.

The Personal Catalog feature will store your favorite items using a combination of temporary and permanent storage in a database. This method requires that you register an account and login to permanently save information in the Personal Catalog . Items are still stored temporarily in the database until you login to your Personal Catalog . Once you login, any temporary information will be saved into your account for permanent storage.

Account

To create a Personal Catalog account, simply choose My Personal Catalog from the left hand navigation and click on the create an account link. Now enter a valid e-mail address and a password.

If you wish to have an admissions advisor contact you, select the contact checkbox. You may enter your name and a message to send along with your contact request. An advisor will contact you via e-mail.

When done, click the Create Account button to create the account.

Note : it is important to use a valid e-mail address in case you ever forget your password .

The account will be created and you will be logged in automatically. Any items you had already added to your Personal Catalog will now be stored permanently in your account.

Feature

To login to your Personal Catalog account, simply choose My Personal Catalog from the left hand navigation, enter your e-mail address and password and click the Login button.

If you have forgotten your password, just enter your e-mail address and click the Reset Password button. An email will be sent to the email address you used to sign up for your My Personal Catalog account with a link that will enable you to reset your password.

To logout, simply view your Personal Catalog and click the Logout link at top right.

Profile

To edit your Personal Catalog account information, login to your Personal Catalog account and click on the Edit Profile link at the top right of the Personal Catalog feature.

You may change your account login by entering a new e-mail address and clicking the Send button.

If you have requested contact you may update your name and the message to send along with your contact request.

To change your password, click on the Change Password link. A pop up window will prompt you for a new password. Enter a new password and confirmation and click the Reset button. When you are finished, you may close the pop up window.

How to make the perfect ats resume.

Remember, an ATS is just a computer filing system. It needs to be able to scan and understand the text on your resume in order to correctly parse the information and sort it properly.

An ATS will never auto-reject a resume, but an ATS optimized resume does make it easier for a recruiter to find you among the sea of applicants.

Even more importantly, an ATS-friendly resume naturally follows expert-recommended resume writing standards as well. That means that when the recruiter personally views your resume, it will include the relevant information they’re looking for and will be formatted in a way that makes it easier to read

Follow these tips for making the perfect ATS resume :

1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for

Focus on quality over quantity. Each job you apply for is unique, even if they all have the same title. Every company has different needs for that role. The job description will make it clear which hard skills, soft skills, experience, and education the company is looking for. So tailor your resume to show them that you are the perfect candidate.

Tailoring each and every resume can be time consuming, but it’s worth the effort!

The best format for the ATS is traditional reverse chronological. You can also use chronological and hybrid resume formats as these are familiar to most recruiters.

5. Use an easy-to-read, traditional font

For readability, use a traditional serif or sans serif font. Untraditional or “fancy” fonts can cause parsing errors, which means the full text of your resume won’t be searchable.

6. Use standard resume section headings

Section headers like “Where I’ve Been” in place of “Work Experience” will confuse applicant tracking systems, causing them to organize information incorrectly.

7. Save your file as a .docx if possible

A docx file is most compatible with ATS.

What is the best resume format for ATS?

There are three standard resume formats to choose from in your job search. They shape your first impression and determine the way recruiters and hiring managers view your fit as an applicant.

Your resume formatting can also determine how well your resume is parsed within an applicant tracking system (ATS) and how likely you are to be noticed as a result.

Regardless of the format you use, the most important thing is to use standard section headings like Experience, Skills, and Education. That will make it easier for the ATS to categorize the text.

How to tailor your ATS-friendly resume to a job

Tailoring your resume proves to recruiters that you’re an experienced professional. Most importantly, it shows them that you’re the perfect fit for this role.

Follow these three steps for tailoring your resume to a job description:

1. Examine the specific job description of the position

Go line by line through the job description and ask yourself these questions:

  • “Does my resume experience section clearly state that I can do what’s required of this role?”
  • “Am I using the same language found in the job description or job posting?”

You might find several different or missing skills and keywords in your generic resume.

2. Match skills and keywords from the job description

Mirroring the language, keywords, and buzzwords found within the job description is the easiest way to demonstrate you’re a better match than the competition.

3. Write your job title clearly

For example, an ATS stores job candidate information like resumes, cover letters, references, and other recruitment and hiring data that HR teams can easily access and organize. It will also track job candidates and their application status throughout the hiring pipeline.

Ultimately, an ATS automates time-consuming administrative tasks such as manually screening applicants, reading resumes, scheduling interviews, and sending notifications and emails to job candidates and employees.

Can you add graphics to your resume?

When it comes to creating an ATS-friendly resume , the rule is: The simpler, the better. ATS are improving at scanning different formatting features, but not all of them are good at this.

Adding graphics and images could cause ATS parsing errors , which means the text on your resume won’t be fully searchable or accurately categorized by an ATS. We recommend that job seekers err on the side of caution. Avoid graphics, images, and photos.

Are Google Docs or Microsoft resume templates ATS-friendly?

They can be. We talked about some formatting features to avoid on your resume – fancy graphics and non-traditional fonts. Those features can trip up an ATS, even if they’re on a Word document or Google Docs file.

However, as long as you follow the guidelines on this page, or use one of these ATS resume templates, you’ll be fine.

To increase your cover letter’s chances of passing an ATS, focus on using a clean format without complex formatting, incorporate relevant keywords and phrases from the job description, and ensure that your content is easy for the ATS to parse.

What is an associate degree?

An associate degree is a postsecondary degree opportunity that students can take after high school, and are typically offered at community colleges or technical colleges .    

What are the admission requirements to get into a school and earn an associate degree?

The requirements for acceptance are different depending on the school you apply to. However, most schools require that a student: 

1.    Is 18 years or older by the time the academic semester starts. 2.    Has a high school diploma or passed the General Education Development test (GED) or similar high school equivalency test.  

How long does it take to earn an associate degree?

For many students, it typically takes two to three years to finish an associate degree. That is why some people refer to associate degrees as a “two-year degree.”

How many credits do you need to graduate with an associate degree?

Most schools require 60 semester credits to complete and earn an associate degree, but this is a general number. To learn more about how many credits are needed, visit your school’s website. 

Are there different types of associate degrees?

Yes, there are different types of associate degrees based on what students’ study and specialize in. The two most common types of associate degrees that students get are associate of arts (AA) and associate of science (AS).

Students who are looking to graduate with an AA degree tend to take a broader range of courses and pursue roles in wide ranging fields including liberal arts, business administration, culinary arts, and criminal justice.

Make sure to check the credit transfer policy of any school you plan on transferring to with associate credits to make sure your credits are accepted.

Hold for Authentication Mac Troubleshooting

Mac users will occasionally get a "Hold for Authentication" error. When they print, they're prompted to log in, but Mac autofills the username with FirstNameLastName when it should be FirstName.LastName. Here's how to trouble-shoot:

  • If you're showing a Mac user how to print for the first time, ask them to check the username  when the sign-in box appears.
  • If they already have a "Hold for Authentication" error,  cancel that document and try to print again.
  • If, on the reprint, the sign-in box doesn't appear,  send them to CTS . They likely checked a box to auto-sign, and their computer is automatically signing in with the wrong username. CTS can reset this (Ross and Marc in CTS told us to send Mac users with recurring hold for authentication errors to CTS).

Which printer do I select if I want to print in the Reference Room?

There are two print options to choose from, select which one you would like depending on if you want to print in black & white, or in color.

Guest Fees for Printing/Copying

Black & White: $0.05 per page

Color: $0.10 per page

Guests will need to check out the guest copy/print card that is located behind the circ desk. Please make sure you get a credit card, keys, or license as "collateral" to ensure they bring the card back to the desk. They'll use the print.gordon.edu website and do the standard web print that students have done in the past. However, they will need to use the username and password located on the back of the guest copy/print card. They will then need to return to the desk and tell you how many pages they printed and whether it was in color or black-and-white. 

To release prints from the circulation desk printer follow these instructions:

1. Go to the bookmarked Print Release page.

3. The page shown below should appear. This page will list all print jobs waiting to release including the Reference Room printers. Before you release the print, make sure that the printer is papercut2\GuestPrinting-CirculationDeskHP-CASH_ONLY. 

4. To the right of the print information, in the blue circle , there are three options: print, cancel, override. By choosing "print," the print job will be released and will start printing. 

5. Some other helpful information includes the information in the raspberry colored box , which gives the option to release all pending prints. Again, before using this make sure that none of the print jobs listed include those sent to the Reference Room. 

6. Before printing, confirm the name of the patron ( underlined in orange ).

7. Have the patron pay, in cash, before you hand them their prints. The screen should display how many pages are being printed, but might not display the total cost of the print. You will need to use the cash register and use the "Black & White Copies" option to complete the transaction. There are two ways to help a patron scan. This is option number 1:

1. Once they have logged in, this screen should appear.

2. If you choose "Device Functions," the following screen will appear.

3. From this screen, they can choose to send it via email to themselves or they can put in the email of the person they want to send the material to. This screen also allows them to change the file type, the scan size, etc. 

4. Once they have input an email address and made any other changes they want, simply press start. They can choose to scan one at a time and email them all as separate pages (this allows them to check that the page is straight and/or nothing is cut off) or they can choose to scan all the pages at the same time and send it in bulk. 

5. The area in the light blue box will show how many pages have been scanned. Once they have scanned all they want, choose "Finish."

6. Once you press "Finish" you will be prompted to click the "Start" button to send the documents.

7. The following screen will appear with options to scan a new document or more pages. If there are no more pages and/or no more documents that need to be scanned. Hit send.

8. You are all set! The patron just needs to log out of the printer.

Scanning option number 2 is very similar to option 1. 

1. Have the patron login to the printer. When the below screen appears, choose "Scan"

2. When the below screen appears, they can choose to send it to their email or send it to their OneDrive account.

3. Once they have chosen, follow steps 4-8 from scanning option 1.

To help a patron make a photocopy, follow the below instructions.

1. There are two ways to make copies.

  • If it is from a bound item (book, passport,etc.), an ID, or a newspaper, have them open the top of the printer and place the item in the upper left hand corner.
  • If it is multiple loose sheets of paper (like sheet music, coloring pages, etc.), the patron can feed them through the feeder at the top of the machine. This is most useful when they are going from a double-sided paper and want the final product to also be double-sided.

2. Have them login to the printer. The below screen will appear. Choose "Device Function".

3. After you have chosen "Device Functions" the below screen will appear. Just click on "Access Device."

4. Once the device has been accessed choose the "Copy" option from the screen below.

5. A screen will appear with a bunch of printing options including ink color, paper size, one-sided or double-sided, etc. For the most part, these auto options should be enough other than changing from one-sided to double-sided. Occasionally, the printers will have an issue and decide that the auto drawer isn't what it wants (listed under paper). If that happens just choose 3 or 4.

6. Once they have chosen everything, press "Start."

7. The machine should start printing. If they have multiple pages from a book or newspaper that they want to copy, they will just repeat the above steps. 

Unfortunately, the Reference Room printers do not have the capability to fax materials. You can send people to Student Life (3rd floor in Lane) since they have fax capabilities.

Enrollments can be dropped and refunded for up to 13 calendar days after the session start date, provided you have not accessed the final exam or completed the course. For Course Bundles, this is 13 calendar days from the session start date of the first course in the bundle.
