Classroom Assignment 4 - Class 8 PDF Download

Read the following passage carefully.

CAN'T YOU CONSERVE A BUCKET OF WATER?

Water is being used as if it is a never-ending source.

Obviously, we cannot decide how much rain we will get,

nor can we predict to a good degree of accuracy when rain

would occur. The only thing we can do to save ourselves

from the dangerous situation of 'tlack of water to drink

while we are thirsty" is to conserve water.

Let us ask ourselves how much water is wasted when we

brush our teeth due to the non-stop flow from the tap.

Water is wasted while washing clothes, cleaning dishes

and flushing the toilet. Most of us know about these

things but realizing it and taking remedial steps is

crucial. We can impart the message of conservation to

our children in school so that the younger generation

today will become responsible citizens oftomorrow.

All ofus can conserve at least a bucket ofwater everyday

by using the scarce resource prudently. Please

remember, a bucket of water saved by every individual

everyday in our country ofbillion-plus means enormous.

We may become richer if we have a lot of gold reserves,

but we will die if we don't have water. In India, where

agriculture is the primary occupation for many people,

water conservation is a must. Y. Phanidra(TheHindu, Modified)

Class 8 Computer Science Chapter 4 Computer Networking

assignment 4th class 8

NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Computer Science Chapter 4 Computer Networking updated for new academic session 2024-25. Grade 8 Computer book chapter 4 is very important for not only CBSE but the State board Students also. Networking is one of the most important tools of computer knowledge.

  • Class 8 Computer Science Chapter 4 Study Material
  • Class 8 Computer Science all Chapters Notes
  • Class 8 all Subjects NCERT Solutions

Computer networks have made a major impact on the society as a powerful communication medium. Everyday thousands of PCs are bought by the users all around the world and majority of them are connected to each other. By using computer networking, one may reduce the amount of travelling, and thus save energy and time. Computer network means a collection of autonomous computer interconnected by a single technology. A computer network is a collection of computers and peripheral devices such as printers etc., connected by communication links such as copper wire, microwaves infrared and communication satellites. Because of these links, components of network function simultaneously. A computer network can be created connecting two or millions of computers. A network can be as small as a local area network consisting of a few computers, printers and other devices.

WHAT IS NETWORKING Computer networking is the transmission of data and information over a communication channel between two or more computers. Communication between computers can be as simple as cabling two or more computers to the same printer or thousands of computers across the world. When your computer is a part of a network using a cable or some other communication channels, you can become a network user. Now you can share files, folders and computer hardware such as printer scanner etc. attached to the network.

SHARING EQUIPMENT Computer network is also used for sharing hardware like scanners and printers, with everyone on the network group. This reduces the cost of buying computer hardware as laser printers and large hard disks can be expensive. Networks enable users to share such equipment by networking microcomputers or workstations.

SHARING DATA/INFORMATION Networks enable user to share information with others. Computer network plays a great role to provide all the information that are stored in different computers. This allows users access to data stored on other computers. This keeps everyone up-to-date about the latest data, since it is all in the same file, rather than having to make copies of the files, which are immediately out-of-date. Using network, the latest data can be easily made available at all times to all the users.

COMMUNICATION Nowadays computer has become a powerful communication medium among people. In a multinational company, its employees and offices may be scattered in different countries. They have to report daily to the head office and to communicate each other they now use Email facility. PROGRAM SHARING This can even let users run programs that are not installed on their own computers but are installed elsewhere in the network. This reduces the effort for network administrators to keep programs configured correctly and save a lot of storage space.

LOW TRANSFER COSTS Computer networking allows fast transfer of information among machines within a group. Time saving increases significantly when we are connected to other networks in comparison to an organization that uses stand alone PCs. When a person makes or changes the report online, the other person can see the change immediately instead of waiting long for a letter. VIDEO CONFERENCING Computer networking is the transmission of data and information over a communication channel between two computers. Video conferencing is another form of communication in which computer network is very useful. Using Video conferencing, people at far location can have a meeting, seeing and hearing each other. Video conferencing is a very powerful medium for reducing the cost and time to travel. ONLINE SHOPPING By using this technology we can do shopping from home or any place using Internet. Various companies and manufacturers of goods provide detail of their goods and services online and collect orders online.

SERVER A server is a powerful version of a desktop computer. Servers are designed to play the key role of the network, performing such functions as file, print and e-mail servers. It can be defined as a computer that shares the data, software and hardware resources on the network.

WORKSTATIONS Any computer becomes a workstation when it is attached to a networking service. A computer can be turned into a networking station by installing the networking interface card. This card directs the computer to look for a server. Computers connected to a network need not to be of the same type. Many networks contain different types of computers.

NETWORK INTERFACE CARD (NIC) Network Interface Card (NIC) is must for each computer on the network. An NIC is a gateway of computer to the network. The NIC attaches to the network via connection medium usually a wire or a cable, which attaches to the other computers. When there are more than two computers, their cables can connect to a hub. A hub is a device on a network that conveys a computer’s request to every device on the network.

Network Operating Systems are essential for networking. Windows NT, Windows 2000 Server and Novell Netware are examples of operating system. Various versions of Linux are available in the market. It is a low-cost or no-cost option. Transmission Media or Hardware for Networking Transmission Media or Hardware just means the physical materials that are used to transmit data between computers. Let’s study some hardware that are required for networking. There are three choices:

  • Twisted pair wire (Phone line)
  • Co-axial cable (Round insulated wire)
  • Fibre optic line (Glass fibers)

COMMUNICATION DEVICE To join two or more computers or networks together a communication device is required. There are different types of communication devices available such as Modem, Hub, Router, Switch etc.

8 Ways to Create AI-Proof Writing Prompts

C reating 100 percent AI-proof writing prompts can often be impossible but that doesn’t mean there aren’t strategies that can limit the efficacy of AI work. These techniques can also help ensure more of the writing submitted in your classroom is human-generated.

I started seeing a big uptick in AI-generated work submitted in my classes over the last year and that has continued. As a result, I’ve gotten much better at recognizing AI work , but I’ve also gotten better at creating writing prompts that are less AI-friendly.

Essentially, I like to use the public health Swiss cheese analogy when thinking about AI prevention: All these strategies on their own have holes but when you layer the cheese together, you create a barrier that’s hard to get through.

The eight strategies here may not prevent students from submitting AI work, but I find these can incentivize human writing and make sure that any work submitted via AI will not really meet the requirements of the assignment.

1. Writing AI-Proof Prompts: Put Your Prompt Into Popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Bard

Putting your writing prompt into an AI tools will give you an immediate idea of how most AI tools will handle your prompt. If the various AI chatbots do a good, or at least adequate, job immediately, it might be wise to tweak the prompt.

One of my classes asks students to write about a prized possession. When you put this prompt into an AI chatbot, it frequently returns an essay about a family member's finely crafted watch. Obviously, I now watch out for any essays about watches.

2. Forbid Cliché Use

Probably the quickest and easiest way to cut back on some AI use is to come down hard on cliché use in writing assignments. AI tools are essentially cliché machines, so banning these can prevent a lot of AI use.

Equally as important, this practice will help your students become better writers. As any good writer knows, clichés should be avoided like the plague.

3. Incorporate Recent Events

The free version of ChatGPT only has access to events up to 2022. While there are plugins to allow it to search the internet and other internet-capable AI tools, some students won’t get further than ChatGPT.

More importantly, in my experience, all AI tools struggle to incorporate recent events as effectively as historic ones. So connecting class material and assignments to events such as a recent State of Union speech or the Academy Awards will make any AI writing use less effective.

4. Require Quotes

AI tools can incorporate direct quotations but most are not very good at doing so. The quotes used tend to be very short and not as well-placed within essays.

Asking an AI tool for recent quotes also can be particularly problematic for today’s robot writers. For instance, I asked Microsoft's Copilot to summarize the recent Academy Awards using quotes, and specifically asked it to quote from Oppenheimer's director Christopher Nolan’s acceptance speech. It quoted something Nolan had previously said instead. Copilot also quoted from Wes Anderson’s acceptance speech, an obvious error since Anderson wasn’t at the awards .

5. Make Assignments Personal

Having students reflect on material in their own lives can be a good way to prevent AI writing. In-person teachers can get to know their students well enough to know when these types of personal details are fabricated.

I teach online but still find it easier to tell when a more personalized prompt was written by AI. For example, one student submitted a paper about how much she loved skateboarding that was so non-specific it screamed AI written. Another submitted a post about a pair of sneakers that was also clearly written by a "sole-less" AI (I could tell because of the clichés and other reasons).

6. Make Primary or Scholarly Sources Mandatory

Requiring sources that are not easily accessible on the internet can stop AI writing in its tracks. I like to have students find historic newspapers for certain assignments. The AI tools I am familiar with can’t incorporate these.

For instance, I asked Copilot to compare coverage of the first Academy Awards in the media to the most recent awards show and to include quotes from historic newspaper coverage. The comparison was not well done and there were no quotes from historical newspaper coverage.

AI tools also struggle to incorporate journal articles. Encouraging your students to include these types of sources ensures the work they produce is deeper than something that can be revealed by a quick Google search, which not only makes it harder for AI to write but also can raise the overall quality.

7. Require Interviews, Field Trips, Etc.

Building on primary and scholarly sources, you can have your students conduct interviews or go on field trips to historic sites, museums, etc.

AI is still, thankfully, incapable of engaging in these types of behavior. This requires too much work for every assignment but it is the most effective way to truly ensure your work is human- not computer-written.

If you’re still worried about AI use, you can even go a step further by asking your students to include photos of them with their interview subjects or from the field trips. Yes, AI art generators are getting better as well, but remember the Swiss cheese analogy? Every layer of prevention can help.

8. Have Students Write During Class

As I said to start, none of the methods discussed are foolproof. Many ways around these safeguards already exist and there will be more ways to bypass these in the future. So if you’re really, really worried about AI use you may want to choose what I call the “nuclear option.” If you teach in person you can require students to write essays in person.

This approach definitely works for preventing AI and is okay for short pieces, but for longer pieces, it has a lot of downsides. I would have trouble writing a long piece in this setting and imagine many students will as well. Additionally, this requirement could create an accusatory class atmosphere that is more focused on preventing AI use than actually teaching. It’s also not practical for online teaching.

That all being said, given how common AI writing has become in education, I understand why some teachers will turn to this method. Hopefully, suggestions 1-7 will work but if AI-generated papers are still out of hand in your classroom, this is a blunt-force method that can work temporarily.

Good luck and may your assignments be free of AI writing!

NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Geography Chapter 4 – Agriculture

1. Answer the following questions.

(i) What is agriculture?

Answer: Agriculture is a primary activity that includes growing crops, vegetables, fruits, flowers and rearing livestock. Agriculture is a primary activity, as it is connected with the extraction and production of natural resources.

(ii) Name the factors influencing agriculture.

Answer: The factors that influence agriculture include soil, climate, topography, population etc.

(iii) What is shifting cultivation? What are its disadvantages?

Answer: Shifting cultivation is also known as slash-and-burn cultivation. It is a type of farming activity which involves clearing a land plot by cutting down trees and burning them. The ashes are then mixed with the soil, and crops are grown. After the land has lost its fertility, it is abandoned. The farmers then move to a new place.

The disadvantages of shifting cultivation are as follows:

  • Leads to deforestation
  • Loss of fertility of a particular land
  • Leads to soil erosion
  • Burning of trees causes air pollution
  • Insufficient cultivation of crops for a large population.

(iv) What is plantation agriculture?

Answer: Plantations are a type of commercial farming where single crops of tea, coffee, sugarcane, cashew, rubber, banana, cotton etc., are grown. Large amounts of labour and capital are required. The produce may be processed on the farm itself or in nearby factories. The development of a transport network is thus essential for such farming. Major plantations are found in the tropical regions of the world. Rubber in Malaysia, coffee in Brazil, and tea in India and Sri Lanka are some examples.

(v) Name the fibre crops and name the climatic conditions required for their growth.

Answer: Jute and Cotton are fibre crops. The climatic conditions necessary for the growth of jute are high temperature, heavy rainfall and high humidity. Similarly, for the growth of cotton, high temperature, light rainfall, and bright sunshine are required.

2. Tick the correct answer.

(i) Horticulture means

(a) growing of fruits and vegetables

(b) primitive farming

(c) growing of wheat

Answer:  (a) Growing of fruits and vegetables

(ii) Golden fibre refers to

Answer: (c) Jute

(iii) Leading producers of coffee

Answer: (a)Brazil

3. Give reasons.

(i) In India, agriculture is a primary activity.

Answer: Agriculture is a primary activity because many regions in India have fertile land that is favourable for agriculture. Two-thirds of the Indian population still depend on agriculture. This is mainly because of the lack of literacy among the people. Hence, India, being a densely populated country, requires large-scale production of food to fulfil the needs of people.

(ii) Different crops are grown in different regions.

Answer: Different crops are grown in different regions because growing the crops depends on factors such as favourable topography of soil, the demand for produce, type of climate, amount of rainfall, technology and labour.

4. Distinguish between the following.

(i) Primary activities and tertiary activities

Answer: Primary activities are related to the production and extraction of natural resources, such as fishing, agriculture and mining, whereas tertiary activities are those that provide support to primary and secondary sectors in carrying out their activities like transportation, banking etc.

(ii) Subsistence farming and intensive farming.

Answer: Subsistence farming is a type of farming that the farmer practices to meet the needs of his family. The cultivation of crops is done for personal consumption. It involves low levels of technology and household labour to produce a small output. In intensive subsistence agriculture, the farmer cultivates a small plot of land using simple tools and more labour. Rice, wheat, maize, pulses and oilseeds are the crops grown in this type of farming. Intensive subsistence agriculture is prevalent in the thickly populated areas of the monsoon regions.

Chapter 4 – Agriculture Summary

Agriculture refers to the practice or science of farming that includes the cultivation of the soil and the growing of crops. It also includes the rearing of animals to fulfil the demand for wool, food and other products.

Types of farming can be broadly categorised into two main types.

Subsistence farming – This type of farming by the farmers to fulfil only their family’s needs. It is further categorised as intensive subsistence agriculture and primitive subsistence agriculture.

Shifting cultivation – Farmers cultivate a piece of land by burning the vegetation on the land, and after burning, the farmer mixes the ashes into the soil and cultivates the land. After the land becomes barren, they move to a new location. It is also known as slash and burn.

You will also learn about the following topics:

  • Nomadic herding
  • Commercial farming
  • Mixed farming
  • Plantations
  • Major crops – various major crops in India, namely rice, wheat millet, maize, cotton, jute, coffee and tea, are discussed
  • Agricultural development – The efforts made to meet the growing demand of the increasing population. It also discusses the most suitable type of farming in different countries

WNBA upgrades foul on Caitlin Clark by Chennedy Carter, fines Angel Reese for no postgame interview

The WNBA has upgraded Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s foul against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after reviewing the play

NEW YORK — The WNBA on Sunday upgraded Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after reviewing the play.

Carter gave a shoulder shot to Clark that knocked her to the floor before an inbound pass during the third quarter of Saturday’s 71-70 win by the Fever. The officials called it an away-from-the-ball foul and didn’t review the play. It was deemed a common foul at the time.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Clark said after the game. “It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”

Carter didn’t answer questions about Clark or the play after the game on Saturday, but spoke to media on Monday.

“I’m a competitor, and I’m going to compete no matter who you are, and no matter who’s in front of me. So that’s just what it was,” Carter said. “Heat of the moment play. We’re getting at it. We’re getting back and forth. It’s basketball. It’s all hoops. After we finish the game, it’s all love.”

Carter then went on to say she took exception to those criticizing her without watching the “whole game.”

“I’m seeing a lot of things — players, fans not understanding who I am as a player,” Carter said. “You have to understand me as a person, too. And don’t just look at one tape and form an opinion about me. I’m truly a passionate person about the game, and I’m genuine. You can ask all my teammates, they’ve gotten to know me. They know the real Chennedy Carter.

“So I’m just saying, don’t form an opinion off of one little clip. And you didn’t even see the whole game and/or the play that led to that.”

Chicago coach Teresa Weatherspoon said Monday that she talked to Carter about it.

“Physical play, intensity and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball. Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game,” Weatherspoon said in a statement. “She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”

Also Sunday, the league fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for failing to make herself available to media after Saturday’s game. And the WNBA fined Chicago $5,000 for failing to ensure that all players comply with league media policies.

The league office may reclassify a flagrant foul or upgrade a foul to a flagrant that isn’t called during the game. In addition, the league may impose a fine or suspend a player for a flagrant foul. The WNBA didn’t do either to Carter.

Players accumulate points for flagrant fouls during the regular season and receive suspensions if they reach a certain number.

“This league is awesome, it’s a physical league,” Indiana coach Christie Sides said before playing the New York Liberty on Sunday night. “That was a non-basketball play that needed to be called in that moment.”

Sides praised Clark in her postgame interview Saturday for keeping her composure through all the physical play she’s faced this season.

“She showed it last night,” the coach said. “Got up and kept playing. All she did was ask the officials to review it. They didn’t want to listen to it. I applaud her for how she handled it last night.”

Clark finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Reese had eight points and 13 rebounds.

“I grew up playing basketball with the boys. It’s always been physical and feisty and you have to find a way to hold your own,” Clark said.
