Harvard Guide to Using SourcesĀ

  • The Honor Code

How to Avoid Plagiarism

It's not enough to know why plagiarism is taken so seriously in the academic world or to know how to recognize it. You also need to know how to avoid it. The simplest cases of plagiarism to avoid are the intentional ones: If you copy a paper from a classmate, buy a paper from the Internet, copy whole passages from a book, article, or Web site without citing the author, you are plagiarizing. Here's the best advice you'll ever receive about avoiding intentional plagiarism: If you're tempted to borrow someone else's ideas or plagiarize in any way because you're pressed for time, nervous about how you're doing in a class, or confused about the assignment, don't do it . The problems you think you're solving by plagiarizing are really minor compared to the problems you will create for yourself by plagiarizing. In every case, the consequences of plagiarism are much more serious than the consequences of turning in a paper late or turning in a paper you're not satisfied to have written.

"...the consequences of plagiarism are much more serious than the consequences of turning in a paper late..."

The consequences of accidental plagiarism are equally daunting and should be avoided at all costs. Whether or not you intended to plagiarize, you will still be held responsible. As a member of an intellectual community you are expected to respect the ideas of others in the same way that you would respect any other property that didn't belong to you, and this is true whether you plagiarize on purpose or by accident. The best way to make sure you don't plagiarize due to confusion or carelessness is to 1) understand what you're doing when you write a paper and 2) follow a method that is systematic and careful as you do your research . In other words, if you have a clear sense of what question you're trying to answer and what knowledge you're building on, and if you keep careful, clear notes along the way, it's much easier to use sources effectively and responsibly and, most of all, to write a successful paper. If you have questions about plagiarism at any point in your research or writing process, ask. It's always better to ask questions than it is to wait for an instructor to respond to work that you have turned in for a grade. Once you have turned in your final work, you will be held responsible for misuse of sources.

With these principles in mind, here are some guidelines for conducting research responsibly:

Keep track of your sources; print electronic sources

While it's easy enough to keep a stack of books or journal articles on your desk where you can easily refer back to them, it's just as important to keep track of electronic sources. When you save a PDF of a journal article, make sure you put it into a folder on your computer where you'll be able to find it. When you consult a Web site, log the Web address in a separate document from the paper you're writing so that you'll be able to return to the Web site and cite it correctly. You should also print the relevant pages from any Web sites you use, making sure you note the complete URL and the date on which you printed the material. Because electronic sources aren't stable and Web pages can be deleted without notice, beware of directing your readers to sources that might have disappeared. Check when the Web site you're using was last updated and update the URLs as you work and once again right before you submit your essay. If an electronic source disappears before you submit your work, you will need to decide whether or not to keep the source in your paper. If you have printed the source and can turn it in with your paper, you should do so. If you have not printed the source, you should consult your instructor about whether or not to use that source in your paper.

The library has several helpful resources for managing your sources, including RefWorks .

Keep sources in correct context

Whenever you consult a source, you should make sure you understand the context, both of the ideas within a source and of the source itself. You should also be careful to consider the context in which a source was written. For example, a book of essays published by an organization with a political bias might not present an issue with adequate complexity for your project.

The question of context can be more complicated when you're working with Internet sources than with print sources because you may see one Web page as separate from an entire Web site and use or interpret that page without fully understanding or representing its context. For example, a definition of "communism" taken from a Web site with a particular political agenda might provide one interpretation of the meaning of the wordā€”but if you neglect to mention the context for that definition you might use it as though it's unbiased when it isn't. Likewise, some Internet searches will take you to a URL that's just one Web page within a larger Web site; be sure to investigate and take notes on the context of the information you're citing.

Research can often turn out to be more time-consuming that you anticipate. Budget enough time to search for sources, to take notes, and to think about how to use the sources in your essay. Moments of carelessness are more common when you leave your essay until the last minute and are tired or stressed. Honest mistakes can lead to charges of plagiarism just as dishonesty can; be careful when note-taking and when incorporating ideas and language from electronic sources so you always know what language and ideas are yours and what belongs to a source.

Don't cut and paste: File and label your sources

Never cut and paste information from an electronic source straight into your own essay, and never type verbatim sentences from a print source straight into your essay. Instead, open a separate document on your computer for each source so you can file research information carefully. When you type or cut and paste into that document, make sure to include the full citation information for the print source or the full URL and the date you copied the page(s). For Web sources, make sure to cite the page from which you're taking information, which may not necessarily be the home page of the site you're using. Use logical and precise names for the files you create, and add citation information and dates. This allows you to retrieve the files easily, deters you from accidentally deleting files, and helps you keep a log of the order in which your research was conducted. It's a good idea to add a note to each file that describes how you might use the information in that file. Remember: you're entering a conversation with your sources, and accurate file names and notes can help you understand and engage that conversation. And, of course, always remember to back up your files.

Keep your own writing and your sources separate

Work with either the printed copy of your source(s) or (in the case of online sources), the copy you pasted into a separate documentā€”not the online versionā€”as you draft your essay. This precaution not only decreases the risk of plagiarism but also enables you to annotate your sources in various ways that will help you understand and use them most effectively in your essay.

Keep your notes and your draft separate

Be careful to keep your research notes separate from your actual draft at all stages of your writing process. This will ensure that you don't cut language from a source and paste it into your paper without proper attribution. If you work from your notes, you're more likely to keep track of the boundaries between your own ideas and those in a source.

Paraphrase carefully in your notes; acknowledge your sources explicitly when paraphrasing

When you want to paraphrase material, it's a good idea first to paste the actual quotation into your notes (not directly into your draft) and then to paraphrase it (still in your notes). Putting the information in your own words will help you make sure that you've thought about what the source is saying and that you have a good reason for using it in your paper. Remember to use some form of notation in your notes to indicate what you've paraphrased and mention the author's name within the material you paraphrase. You should also include all citation information in your notes.

When you decide to use paraphrased material in your essay, make sure that you avoid gradually rewording the paraphrased material from draft to draft until you lose sight of the fact that it's still a paraphrase. Also, avoid excessive paraphrasing in which your essay simply strings together a series of paraphrases. When the ideas taken from your sources start to blend in deceptively with your own thinking, you will have a more difficult time maintaining the boundaries between your ideas and those drawn from sources. Finally, whenever you paraphrase, make sure you indicate, at each logical progression, that the ideas are taken from an authored source.

Avoid reading a classmate's paper for inspiration

If you're in a course that requires peer review or workshops of student drafts, you are going to read your classmates' work and discuss it. This is a productive way of exchanging ideas and getting feedback on your work. If you find, in the course of this work, that you wish to use someone else's idea at some point in your paper (you should never use someone else's idea as your thesis, but there may be times when a classmate's idea would work as a counterargument or other point in your paper), you must credit that person the same way you would credit any other source. On the other hand, if you find yourself reading someone else's paper because you're stuck on an assignment and don't know how to proceed, you may end up creating a problem for yourself because you might unconsciously copy that person's ideas. When you're stuck, make an appointment with your instructor or go to the Writing Center for advice on how to develop your own ideas.

Don't save your citations for later

Never paraphrase or quote from a source without immediately adding a citation. You should add citations in your notes, in your response papers, in your drafts, and in your revisions. Without them, it's too easy to lose track of where you got a quotation or an idea and to end up inadvertently taking credit for material that's not your own.

Quote your sources properly

Always use quotation marks for directly quoted material, even for short phrases and key terms.

Keep a source trail

As you write and revise your essay, make sure that you keep track of your sources in your notes and in each successive draft of your essay. You should begin this process early, even before you start writing your draft. Even after you've handed in your essay, keep all of your research notes and drafts. You ought to be able to reconstruct the path you took from your sources to your notes and from your notes to your drafts and revision. These careful records and clear boundaries between your writing and your sources will help you avoid plagiarism. And if you are called upon to explain your process to your instructor, you'll be able to retrace the path you took when thinking, researching, and writing, from the essay you submitted back through your drafts and to your sources.

General Overview

One-year MAPP students are required to complete a masterā€™s thesis worth 7 credits.Ā  All theses must address an appropriate research topic, which includes a deļ¬ned ļ¬eld of research and a number of researchable questions to investigate.

Theses should demonstrate a good knowledge of the literature in the wider ļ¬eld of policy studies and political science (comparative politics, political economy, etc.) and contribute to the study of the ļ¬eld through original research and/or by relating the subject studies to the broader academic literature and demonstrate analytic ability through the careful and critical use of relevant concepts and approaches.

Thesis RequirementsĀ

All students should begin to think about their thesis topic during the Fall term. One-year MAPP students should submit a short description (Thesis Topic and Area of Specialization) of the planned work to the Student Aļ¬€airs Coordinator (electronic copy by January 24, 2021).

Thesis Topic and Area of SpecializationĀ

This short proposal (two paragraphs to one page) should outline the topic, the preliminary research question, and the methodological approach, in particular if it is likely that the method would require speciļ¬c forms of faculty support. Based on these research proposals, a supervisor will be assigned to the students , taking into account faculty membersā€™ research interests and expertise.

The supervisor is the studentā€™s primary contact during the research and thesis writing period. Supervisors will provide general guidance, meet the student for consultations, and provide feedback on drafts of (parts of) the thesis/thesis report (please note that supervisors can only comment on full drafts if you allow suļ¬ƒcient time for them to do so). Students will be informed about their assigned supervisors by February 14.

Thesis writing workshop (1 credit)

The Thesis Writing Workshop (1 credit) is a mandatory part of the thesis component for One- year MAPP students. The workshop is meant to help to further develop and shape the MA thesis. Coursework in this seminar will be assessed with a pass/fail grade. To earn a `passā€™ students need to regularly attend the class and participate actively. While there are no or very few and short assigned readings, students are expected to submit short pieces of writing related to speciļ¬c sections of their thesis and topics discussed in class prior to the relevant sessions.

Failing to regularly attend the class and comply with the requirements will be noted in the degree transcript and may result in a reduction of the thesis grade (by 0.2 grades).

The exact format and precise schedule of the workshop will be communicated at the beginning of the winter term.

MA Thesis Research Grants

CEU oļ¬€ers small grants to support masterā€™s thesis research. If interested, students should submit their application to Zoltan Wagner by the following deadline: March 12, 2021.

PLEASE NOTE: These funds are limited and we cannot guarantee that funding will remain available for the second round.Ā

The application must contain the grant application form, a summary of the project, the research timetable (days and location), a summary of advanced preparations undertaken, the supervisorā€™s recommendation, and a detailed budget. After the completion of their research, grantees should be prepared to send the empirical raw material (ļ¬eld notes, interview transcripts, etc.) toĀ Ā  Zoltan Wagner . Applicants must also submit a travel grant report and original invoices for all expenses to the CEU Grants Management Oļ¬ƒce within 30 days of the completion of their research. If the masterā€™s thesis grant is not used according to the budget that was submitted, the University may insist that the grant be refunded.

For further details please visitĀ  https://www.ceu.edu/funding-fees/grants-enrolled

You will also receive emails from the CEU Grants Management Ofļ¬ce with additional information about the application requirements for these MA Thesis Research Grants.

Thesis Deadlines

The deadlines for submitting the thesis and the thesis report are strictly observed. Late submission will result in a reduction of the ļ¬nal grade of 0.2 points per business day. Note that an extension of the deadline can only be granted in eventsĀ  that are beyond the control of the student. Students must apply for an extension of the deadline to the Thesis Supervisor and the Program Director. Students who submit the thesis/thesis report late because of illness need to provide a medical certiļ¬cate. Practical problems that may have been encountered will not be accepted as a valid excuse for failing to meet the deadline. Please make sure that you submit your thesis well in advance of the deadline in order to avoid potential difļ¬culties.

Thesis submission details

  • Electronic version of the entire thesis IN ONE WORD DOCUMENT FILE submitted via email to the Academic Curriculum Coordinator (saved in the following format: studentā€™s family name_ MA Thesis)
  • Electronic version of the entire thesis entered in the Electronic Thesis Database (ETD)
  • A signed declaration of authorship attached to every printed copy of the thesis and a typed and signed version saved after the title page of each electronic ļ¬le (for aĀ sample declaration please seeĀ  Appendix VI )
  • A printed, one sided, copy of the thesis delivered in a sealed envelope (library copy)

Notes : The Computer Center will oļ¬€er short courses on thesis editing and using the Electronic Thesis Database (ETD) in the Spring term. For more information contact Erika MĆ”thĆ© at [email protected].

The CEU Copy Shop can copy and bind your thesis. It is located on the Ground ļ¬‚oor of Oktober 6 street 12. However, due to their heavy workload, they cannot always handle immediate requests. There are also numerous copy services available in Budapest.

Thesis FormatĀ Ā

The total length of the thesis must be 12,000 words (+/ā€“ 10%) and include: the title page, copyright notice, table of contents, list of ļ¬gures, list of abbreviations, acknowledgments, references, abstract (maximum 200 words), footnotes, bibliography and appendices. Tables and figures may be excluded from the word count.

Submitted theses must follow the CEU Thesis Guidelines . Ā Term papers and theses must follow the referencing system of the Chicago Embedded Style, the most important elements of which are addressed in the Academic Writing for Public Policy course. For detailed information on correct citation please consult the 7th Edition of Turabianā€™sĀ  A Manual for Writers (available in the library). For a sample cover page see Appendix IV.

Dissertations must include footnotes and a full bibliography of sources that were consulted. Arguments and information drawn from books and articles that were consulted must be acknowledged. Direct quotations should be clearly indicated through the use of quotation marks (ā€œ ā€), or through the use of indirect quotations; copying another authorā€™s writing in the text without proper citation is plagiarism and will be penalized.

CEUā€™s Policy on Plagiarism details plagiarism and related penalties.

Other cases of academic dishonesty are regulated by CEUā€™s Code of Ethics Ā  Ā

It is recommended that students use a bibliography software to organize references. For more information see: http://www.personal.ceu.hu/comp/endnote.htm.

Thesis Evaluation and GradingĀ Ā

Two SPP faculty members will read and evaluate the thesis. The thesis grade will be determined based upon their two written evaluations. There will be no oral defenseĀ  after thesis submission. The MA Thesis Evaluation Form including the ļ¬nal grade and comments on the dissertation will be provided within four weeks of the submission date for those who submit by the deadline. (For a sample MA Thesis Evaluation Form please see Appendix V . ) For appeals, please see the handbook's section on Appealing a Grade .

The thesis will be graded in line with the Universityā€™s thesis grading policy. The following criteria is oļ¬€ered as a guideline for how thesis grades are determined:

The thesis shows originality and a high degree of conceptual sophistication along with critical examination of theoretical and empirical knowledge.

Ā ā€œAā€“,ā€ ā€œB+ā€

The thesis contributes to the existing literature in the ļ¬eld; it shows a complete knowledge of the subject matter and relevant theoretical material, and it demonstrates a clear analytic ability.

ā€œB,ā€ ā€œBā€“,ā€ ā€œC+ā€

The thesis has the attributes of a ā€œPass with Honorsā€ thesis, but at an adequate rather than an excellent level.

Fail / Resubmit

The thesis lacks a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, and it does not relate to the broader academic literature. It neither applies research methods properly, nor demonstrates any analytic ability. The student may be invited to write a new thesis. The maximum grade possible in this circumstance is a Retake Pass (RP in the value of C+).

Fail for academic dishonesty

The thesis work is not original: the thesis (or substantial parts of it) has either been submitted to fulļ¬ll the requirements of another degree at CEU or another university or parts of the thesis are plagiarized, and are not the original work of the author.

In case of serious oļ¬€enses the thesis is graded Fail (F).

In some cases, the thesis may be graded Retake Pass (RP in the value of C+) and the transcript will be ļ¬‚agged for academic dishonesty.

Plagiarism is one of the most flagrant violations of academic standards. The consequences of plagiarism are accordingly drastic. Please read about plagiarism and its consequences in the document What is Plagiarism .

" What is Plagiarism " includes the plagiarism statement you must sign and turn in with every paper. The plagiarism declaration is part of the Submission Sheet  to be handed in with all assessed work.

Generative AI

Recent years have led to the development of "generative digital tools": computer programs based on artificial intelligence (AI) that produce text, images, videos, or code based on user input. It is vital that students learn how to handle these tools sensibly, responsibly, and critically. This involves an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of AI tools, of academic integrity, and of legal parameters. Academic writing skills will continue to be essential: comprehensive subject knowledge, along with familiarity with academic methods and style are needed to be able to critically evaluate and improve the output of AI.

Students may not under any circumstances use generative AI tools in Core Curriculum Courses or in the courses of the Language Module , except for the authorized explorations that will take place in class to build and improve critical AI literacy. Students in classes beyond the Core Curriculum Courses and the Language Module are permitted to use generative AI under specific conditions (illustrated in detail in " Guidelines on the use of Generative AI ").

Failure to correctly log, cite and reference each use of AI tools in written work will be deemed to constitute a case of plagiarism. Please read the conditions and guidelines on the correct use of Generative AI in the following document ( Guidelines on the use of Generative AI ).

Submitting admissions

Fill in this form, sign the plagiarism declaration and submit the form along with all assessed work in print:

Bachelor Thesis

Registration for the ba thesis.

The deadlines can be found in the course booklet and here .

The registration for the BA thesis is a two-step process. First, you register your thesis with your supervisor, then you get the ok from your study counsellor and hand in the BA thesis registration form to the secretariat.

Use this BA Thesis Registration Form  to register your thesis. You do NOT have to sign up on KSL for your BA thesis as the grade will be entered manually after you have handed it in.

Withdrawal from the BA thesis registration is possible only until 15 April / 15 November in the semester of writing. Thereafter, a withdrawal is only granted on the basis of substantial and documented reasons (e.g. doctor’s certificate), and failure to provide such will result in an insufficient mark.

Format Requirements

The BA thesis is about 15,000 words long and has to be completed within three months of registration. The thesis word count includes everything except appendices and cover page (i.e. references, table of contents, etc. are included).

For further information and guidelines please consult the Manual for Writing Papers (see "General Information" above).

Ready to submit? Please see "Thesis submission" (below) for further information.

Prolonging your thesis

At the supervisor's discretion, short extensions may be granted: maximum two weeks for the BA thesis. Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness) may the thesis be extended into another semester; in which case, students may be deregistered from the final colloquium and required to repeat it.

Master Thesis

Registration for the ma thesis.

The deadlines can be found in the course booklet and here .

MA theses need to be registered with the Department of English as well as with the Dean’s Office. Please consult the website of the Dean’s Office for information about how to register your MA thesis at the Dean's Office. To register your MA thesis with the department you must complete the MA thesis registration form and include your supervisor’s and study counsellor’s signatures before handing in the form to the secretariat.

In order to register for the thesis you must have completed all other compulsory modules with the exception of the MA Colloquium. At the moment of registration (early December/early June) you cannot have more than one graded seminar pending (i.e., already attended but still awaiting entry in KSL) and you must have already attended your second MA Colloquium. Furthermore, you cannot miss more than 10 ungraded ECTS (excluding the final MA colloquium) when registering your thesis.

Use this MA thesis registration form (PDF, 87KB)  to register your thesis. You do NOT have to sign up on KSL for your MA thesis as the grade will be entered manually by the Dekanat.

The MA thesis is 30’000-40’000 words long. The thesis word count includes everything except appendices and cover page (i.e. references, table of contents, etc. are included).

At the supervisor's discretion, short extensions may be granted: one month for the MA thesis, via the Dean's Office. Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness) may the thesis be extended into another semester; in which case, students may be deregistered from the final colloquium and required to repeat it.

If you want to prolong your thesis you will have to adhere to the deadlines from the Dean's office. You will have to fill in the form you can find at the Dean's office ( here ) and have it signed by your supervisor who has to agree. Your options are the following:

  • Extending for one month: You have to get permission and a signature from your supervisor on the form above. Please make sure you hand in your form at the Dekanat at least 1 week before the official deadline!
  • Extending for one semester: You have to get permission and a signature from your supervisor on the form above. Please make sure you hand in your form at the Dekanat at least 1 week before the official deadline!
  • Second extension for one semester: If you need a second semester-long extension, the  Collegium Decanale  will need to approve this. Write a short letter (signed by the supervisor of your thesis), submit it to the Dean's Office (for the attention of Collegium Decanale), explain the reasons for the further delay in writing and enclose any employment or medical certificates as applicable.

Thesis Submission

Please submit your thesis in the following format:

  • hard copy (ask your supervisor whether they would like to have an electronic copy additionally )
  • glue binding or ring binding
  • can be printed back-to-back and in black-and-white

BA Thesis Submissions

Please note that for the BA Thesis you will have to hand in the  Submission sheet (PDF, 151KB) . Hand your thesis in either directly to your supervisor or at the main office (use the wooden mail box if the main office is closed).

MA Thesis Submissions

Two hard copies will be required, one for your supervisor and one for the Dean's office. You will also need two different submission sheets:

Copy for supervisor: You will have to hand in the Submission sheet (PDF, 151KB) with the copy for your supervisor . Hand your thesis in either directly to your supervisor or at the main office (use the wooden mail box if the main office is closed).

Copy for Dean's office: Additionally, you will also have to hand in a seperate declaration for your copy for the Dean's office . You can find the form here  (at the bottom: "ErklƤrung zur Masterarbeit"/"Declaration of the master thesis").

Once you have completed all requirements of your study programme you can apply for your diploma.

For BA students, everything has to be in KSL, including the thesis, before the Studienleitung can finalise your planning view. For MA students you will have to contact the Studienleitung even before your MA thesis has been entered (the grade and ECTS for that are later entered by the Dean's Office).

Important: This process takes some time, so get all your paperwork in order as early as you can.

You have two options, apply online or in person.

In order to do so you need to:

  • Check on KSL whether your file is in order ( Planungssicht ). If necessary, shift courses into the correct slots.
  • Once you have done so, or if you have problems with this, contact the department’s Studienleitung (can be found in the Who to Ask section of the website )  and ask him or her to check your file on KSL.
  • You can either ask the Studienleitung to sign the Bescheinigung BA/MA-Abschluss in person or send them an email asking them to set your Major and Minor to "Fachanforderung erfĆ¼llt" on KSL.   Once your file has been checked and approved by both your Major and your Minor department you will be able to get your diploma issued.
  • In order to apply for it at the Dean’s Office you will need to complete the application process detailed on the Dean’s Office website . Furthermore, you will need the confirmation form ( Bescheinigung BA/MA-Abschluss ) from both your Major and your Minor departments signed by the Studienleitung of the respective department.

Important: Please be aware that you cannot click the button requesting your diploma on KSL. You do have to directly contact your study counsellor.

Thesis upload, anti-plagiarism and formatting

All graduating students enrolled in first- and second-cycle degree programmes, master's degree programmes and degree programmes established under the old university system must upload their thesis/final paper in their Personal Area for a check intended to reveal eventual improper use of sources available online. Ca' Foscari uses special software (COMPILATIO.NET) allowing professors to check the students have used sources correctly but above all allowing students to check that they have referenced correctly; in fact, the aim is to educate and prevent, not punish.

Guidelines for thesis/final paper [ITA]

How to create the file of your thesis/final paper and upload it on your Personal Area:

Upload thesis/final paper

Anti-plagiarism software, format of thesis/final paper.

To upload your thesis go to your Personal Area > Online student services - Esse3 > Upload thesis and check request to graduate status. The file should be in pdf format and must not exceed 10 Mbyte . (see below, tips for creating a PDF)

You may upload different versions of your thesis during the upload period ā€“ the last version uploaded will be considered definitive.

Failure to upload your thesis in the period established will disqualify you from defending your thesis.

Tips for creating a PDF

To comply with the 10Mbyte limit, reduce the size of the pictures in the document with the appropriate compression options in the writing software used. For example, if you are using Office (Word): use the compress pictures function then select ā€œall pictures in documentā€ and ā€œwebā€ resolution.

To create the pdf file, you can directly use the ā€œsave as pdfā€ function if provided by the writing programme used. Alternatively, you can use a conversion software available on the web. We recommend PDFCreator .

If, even after the pdf file has been compressed, the file exceeds the permitted size, you will have to upload a text-only version of the document (in the online thesis management procedure) and use the www.unive.it/megamail service to upload the full version of the thesis. To access the service, simply:

  • Select Ca' Foscari University of Venice from the drop-down menu and enter your login data for the Unive reserved area.
  • Attach the document in the data drag box, indicating   [email protected] as recipient in the text box provided.
  • Check the box to accept the terms and conditions of the service and finally the ā€œInviaā€ (Submit) button.

You can also upload the file if your thesis contains attachments that cannot be converted to pdf (e.g., videos), while still uploading the textual part.

Thesis/final paper writing: how to self-assess authenticity

During the drafting process, you can check parts of your work at any time in order to identify potentially ambiguous parts of the text, find sources to cite and construct bibliographical references correctly. The check is free of charge for up to 40 pages of 250 words. It is a first analysis tool to support the correct writing of the thesis/final paper. Anti-plagiarism check by University

After the upload deadline has passed, the University will check all uploaded documents using the COMPILATIO.NET software. The results of the check will be displayed in your Personal Area > Upload thesis and check request to graduate status If a significant percentage of text resembles other sources, your supervisor will establish whether incorrect use of sources has been made and may decide to postpone your defense of your thesis to the next session.

The title page must contain

  • the name of the University and degree programme ;
  • the full thesis title ;
  • the name of your supervisor and advisor (if applicable);
  • the name of the author (preceded by ā€œlaureando/aā€) accompanied by authorā€™s student number;
  • the academic year (remember that theses defended in the special session belong to the previous AY; for example, the graduation session taking place in the first months of solar year 2014 is part of AY 2012/2013):

Students must use the model provided for all degree programmes.

Text : pages should contain at least 30 lines made up of 60 characters (total of 1800-2000 characters per page). You may use characters and colours of your choice.

Page format : A4.

As the sole author of your final dissertation or thesis , you are the holder of the relevant copyright , which confers protection on both your inalienable moral rights (authorship, integrity, publication) and your rights of economic and patrimonial use.

Said rights of economic and patrimonial use (reproduction, execution, representation dissemination, distribution, processing and translation) are transferable in part or in full at the time of publication with a publisher.

After obtaining your degree, you can first of all decide whether to make your dissertation/thesis available for consultation in the Digital Dissertation Archive or to deny access to it, in full compliance with the relevant regulations.

If you change your mind in the future, your access authorisation may be revoked. In the event that you decide to have your dissertation/thesis published with a publishing house, please consider some important legal aspects:

  • in contracts with publishers, the possibility of assigning only those rights necessary to the publishing initiative, retaining those rights that will allow you to deposit the work in open access repositories, grant the work a Creative Commons licence for public sharing, publish the work in collections or the like, use the work in teaching educational use (e.g., lecture notes), or revise and update the work is to be protected;
  • special attention must be paid not only to contractual clauses for the publication and any hidden costs for additional services, but also to the reputation and credentials of the publisher who will do this, whether free of charge or for a fee;
  • to avoid what is known as Predatory Publishers, it is important to check the reputation and prestige of publishers (e.g., in the thikchecksubmit.org portal).

For advice and support on these issues, feel free to contact your supervisor/lecturer.

The MA thesis can be written in one of the following subject areas: Synchronic Linguistics (module WP 38), Diachronic Linguistics (module WP 39), Literature and Culture (module WP 40) or TEFL (module WP 41). The final modules WP 38-41 comprise the MA thesis and the MA Defense ("Disputation") , i.e. an oral exam on the MA thesis.

Please note that there are two different registration periods for different groups of MA students: - students who complete the MA programme within the recommended 4 semesters ("Regelstudienzeit"), i.e. who follow the recommendation in the checklist , register for the thesis as usual at the end of the term break (= registration period 2), and submit at submission date 2 - students who write their thesis in semester 5 or later register earlier, in registration period 1 (= ! usually at the very beginning of the term break), and submit at submission date 1.

Please contact the supervisor you would like to write your thesis with BEFORE registration period 1, even if you can register in the later registration period 2. This is essential because supervisors can, overall, only take a limited number of candidates.

More information on the MA thesis and the registration periods can be found on the PAGS website .

Please also consult our information sheet for an overview of the most important steps.

When do I have to write the MA thesis?

Who supervises MA theses?

How do I get my topic for the MA thesis?

When and how do I register for the MA thesis ? When and how do I register for the defense ("Disputation") ?

How much time do I have for writing the MA thesis? When do I have to hand in ?

How long is the MA thesis supposed to be?

How does submission work.

What if I fail the MA thesis ?

What if I get ill during the writing period (or cannot work for other reasons)?

Can I unregister from the MA thesis ?

When do I have to write the MA thesis ?

  • semester recommended by the PStO for writing the MA thesis: 4th (regular) semester
  • semester in which the MA thesis has to be registered for/written at the latest: 5th (regular) semester

Please note that there are two different registration periods (registration period 2 if you register at the end of the 3rd semester, registration period 1 if you register at the end of your 4th or a later (regular) semester), see above.

  • in Linguistics :
  • in Literature and Culture:

Prof. Dr. Ingo Berensmeyer Prof. Dr. Tobias Döring PD Dr. Daniella Jancso Prof. Dr. Helge Nowak Prof. Dr. Claudia Olk Apl. Prof. Dr. Enno Ruge

  • in TEFL/English Language Teaching:

Please contact the university teacher by whom you would like to be supervised well before the registration period - the number of candidates that a teacher can supervise is limited and the topic areas have to fit the respective supervisor's areas of expertise/interest. If you intend to write your thesis in TEFL , it is highly recommended to contact the TEFL Department very early (ideally at least one year in advance).

How do I get the topic for my MA thesis?

  • the (exact) topic is set by the supervisor and is announced on the first day of the writing period (usually directly by the supervisor and/or the coordinator of the study programme; some time later, the topic can also be seen in LSF in the section "List of exams registered for")
  • it is possible (and highly recommended) to talk with the supervisor about possible topics/topic areas in advance to thesis registration ; please contact your supervisor well before the registration period

When and how do I register for the MA thesis? When and how do I register for the defense ("Disputation")?

  • please use this registration form to register in the registration period that is defined for your semester ; the exact procedure is as follows:
  • Please fill in the top part of the form and sign at "Unterschrift des/der Studierenden"
  • Hand the form over to your supervisor (either by e-mail oder in person in an office hour). The supervisor will then enter the topic, sign and stamp the form
  • Ask your supervisor to hand the form on to Dr. Günther , and to do so during the registration period (Friday noon at the latest).

There is no separate registration for the defense ( Disputation ). Your supervisor will contact you about this once he/she has marked your thesis.

How much time do I have to write the MA thesis? When do I have to hand in?

  • the writing period is 20 weeks
  • the submission deadline is announced on the PAGS website

Please note the information above on different registration periods and different submission deadlines (registration period/submission deadline 2 für students who register at the end of their 3rd semester, registration period/submission deadline 1 for students who register at the end of their 4th or a later semester).

  • 60.000 - max. 90.000 characters (without spaces; the title sheet, table of contents, list of references and appendix are not counted)
  • you need to hand in two bound print copies (together with the title sheet and declaration of plagiarism ). The copies are to be handed in in person at PAGS ; up-to-date information on the submission procedure can be found on the PAGS website
  • some supervisors want students to submit an additional electronic copy by E-Mail ; please ask your supervisor about this

What happens if I fail the MA thesis ?

  • the MA thesis can be repeated once
  • the second try has to be done in the semester which directly follows the first (failed) attempt
  • please contact the PAGS (Ms. Pérez-Morales) as early as possible
  • if you are ill or cannot work for other (valid) reasons during less than half of the writing period (i.e. for less than 10 weeks), you can apply for an extension of the writing period ; information on the documents needed to do so (e.g. medical certificate) is provided by the PAGS
  • if you are ill or cannot work for other (valid) reasons during more than half of the writing period (i.e. for more than 10 weeks), your registration for the MA thesis can be cancelled ; information on the documents needed to do so (e.g. medical certificate) is provided by the PAGS

Can I unregister from the MA thesis?

  • it is not possible to unregister for reasons other than illness (or comparable reasons accepted as valid by the PAGS; see above)

Online Plagiarism Checker For Students

Writing an academic paper can be challenging when you’re not sure if it’s original enough to pass a plagiarism check. Of course, students take information from various sites before writing their own text. Sometimes, it just so happens that certain parts are very similar to your resources, making your professor think that you’ve just copied work from somewhere. That’s why it’s crucial for any modern college or university student to ensure that their work has 100% original content to maintain academic integrity.

Luckily, a free plagiarism checker online can solve this issue quickly and easily. Many professional writing services use a plagiarism checker for research paper. However, students sometimes forget that they should too. But with so many options that pop up when you ask Google to “check my paper for plagiarism”, how do you choose the right one for detection? We’ve got the solution in the form of PapersOwl’s free plagiarism checker tool! Our simple tool makes it convenient to check any writing task without having to spend a dime. It works quickly and highly accurately, ensuring that you get the top grade you deserve. So, if you want to check plagiarism online before turning your task in, head over to our website and get started!

Accurate Check for Plagiarism with Percentage

Many students wishing to produce original content aren’t quite sure how to get an exact percentage of plagiarised text in their work. This percentage is important since many universities have a certain limit of non-unique words you can have in your essay for it to be considered okay. If your plagiarism search doesn’t give you the exact percentage, you can’t be sure if your assignment will go through or not.

When using a free plagiarism tool, it’s essential to have this data provided to you. Only when you have it can you decide which parts to change and which ones to chuck out to achieve your desired results. Plagiarized content is a big issue in modern educational institutions, so getting reliable and trustworthy results is vital. This is the most essential requirement when you check plagiarism.

PapersOwl’s plagiarism detection tool gives you all the information you need to fix plagiarized content. Whether you’ve fallen victim to accidental plagiarism or have tried to make your life easier by copying some text from different sources, you’ll get an accurate percentage with our plagiarism checker online. If you’re wondering how to check paper for plagiarism, it’s nothing complicated at all! Simply visit our site, paste your whole essay into the relevant text box or upload the text file, click on Check For Plagiarism, and you’ll get accurate plagiarism results in a matter of seconds. You’ll see the problematic parts with plagiarism detected highlighted, with links to where similar content exists. Our service with plagiarism detector will also give you the option to check my paper for plagiarism and then to hire a professional writer to fix your task quickly if you’re busy with other things!

The Fastest Plagiarism Checker Online

Gaining insight into duplicate content only works if you get your results quickly. There are so many free plagiarism software online that promise to do the job for you. However, a lot of them are clunky, slow, and inaccurate. How can you produce original work without similarity detection you can trust?

PapersOwl stands out in this regard because it will detect plagiarism in seconds. This is a plagiarism scanner that’s able to perform a Swift Check to give you a uniqueness check right there and then. It also conducts a Deep Search, going through millions of sources on the internet to check for plagiarism. A document of about 1500 words takes only about 10 seconds to get processed! You get a clear plagiarism score of how much text is plagiarized and how much is original. All the sources that your essay matches are listed based on how much similarity there is in your academic writing. And on top of that, you get a handy Make It Unique button that’ll take you to an order page where you can ask our expert writers to rewrite your work and make it 100% unique.

All of this is done almost instantly, allowing students to continue working on their assignments without missing a beat. Not every plagiarism detection software works this quickly, making ours the best one you’ll ever use.

Plagiarism Checker Helps Boost Your Grade

A lot of students make the mistake of considering their papers automatically free from plagiarism. After all, they’ve written it themselves, so how could it be problematic? What they don’t realize is that it’s very easy to borrow some information mistakenly. Turning such a paper in can cause multiple problems, as your professor might think you haven’t done the work at all.

That is why you should always use a plagiarism scanner to test for plagiarized content in your college papers. Our online plagiarism checker for students is designed for this exact purpose. A simple, free plagiarism check could help you check plagiarism, fix any mistakes you see, and submit high-quality text that no one will question.

Our plagiarism detector has a lot going for it. It makes plagiarism detection easier than ever before. Unlike copying and pasting each passage individually into Google, simply upload the whole file into our plagiarism checker free for students, and you don’t have to do anything else. All the matches are highlighted so you know what to change.

The plagiarism test will give you a uniqueness percentage too. This will help you figure out where you stand and how much time you need to adjust anything if required. So, using our copyright checker online free to check your writing is essential. This way, you’ll submit the task only when you’re sure it meets the level of uniqueness required by your school. As a result, your grades will drastically improve when you check for plagiarism.
