by Lee Child & Andrew Child ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 25, 2022

A grimly efficient addition to the Reacher canon.

In the latest volume from Child, Inc., in which the retiring Lee's younger brother, Andrew, will soon take over the Jack Reacher franchise, the colossal ex-Army cop traces the killing of a woman in a Colorado town to a gruesome prison conspiracy in Mississippi.

The death is ruled a suicide, but Reacher saw a man push the woman under a bus and steal her purse. After tracking down and disposing of the culprit, he learns that the woman worked for a private prison in Mississippi and had returned to Colorado to run troubling statistics about the prison's operation past her former boss. He died of a supposed heart attack 12 hours before her death. Teaming up with the man's tough-skinned ex-wife, Reacher heads South to sort things out, "wired to move toward danger." Fearing Reacher will interfere with their deadly schemes, prison officials set up a network of roadblocks outside of town to pick him off. Meanwhile, a vulnerable 15-year-old boy, escaping his abusive foster mother in Los Angeles, travels to Mississippi after his birth mother tells him life-changing truths about his father. He, too, is targeted by bad guys. Most of the ingredients of classic Reacher are here. Our sadistic hero delivers bone-crushing blows to his hopeless foes with sadistic satisfaction ("Would you care if you stepped on a cockroach?"). He eludes the traps set for him and penetrates the high-security prison. He drinks a lot of coffee and beds a local woman. What's missing in this follow-up to the collaborative Better Off Dead (2021) is Lee Child's elegant writing, for which he hasn't received enough credit. The sentences here are short and metronomically flat, and the early sections are uncharacteristically disjointed. But fans who come for the action and the traveling tips—a folding toothbrush is best, he advises—will not be disappointed.

HOME IS WHERE THE BODIES ARE

by Jeneva Rose ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 30, 2024

Answers are hard to come by in this twisting tale designed to trick and delight.

Three siblings on very different paths learn that their family home may be haunted by secrets.

Eldest daughter Beth is alone with her fading mother as she takes her final breath and says something about Beth’s long-departed brother and sister, who may not have disappeared forever. Beth is still reeling from the loss of her mother when her estranged siblings show up. Michael, the youngest, hasn’t been home since their father’s disappearance seven years ago. In the meantime, he’s outgrown his siblings, trading his share of the family troubles for a high-paying job in San Jose. Nicole, the middle child, has been overpowered by addiction and prioritized tuning out reality over any sense of responsibility, much to Beth’s disgust. Though their mother’s death marks an ending for the family, it’s also a beginning, as the three siblings realize when they find a disturbing videotape among their parents’ belongings. The video, from 1999, sheds suspicion on their father’s disappearance, linking it to a long-unsolved neighborhood mystery. Was it just a series of unfortunate circumstances that broke the family apart, or does something more sinister underlie the sadness they’ve all found in life? In chapters that rotate among the family’s first-person narratives, the siblings take turns digging up stories and secrets in their search for solace.

ONE OF US IS DEAD

THEN SHE WAS GONE

by Lisa Jewell ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 24, 2018

Dark and unsettling, this novel’s end arrives abruptly even as readers are still moving at a breakneck speed.

Ten years after her teenage daughter went missing, a mother begins a new relationship only to discover she can't truly move on until she answers lingering questions about the past.

Laurel Mack’s life stopped in many ways the day her 15-year-old daughter, Ellie, left the house to study at the library and never returned. She drifted away from her other two children, Hanna and Jake, and eventually she and her husband, Paul, divorced. Ten years later, Ellie’s remains and her backpack are found, though the police are unable to determine the reasons for her disappearance and death. After Ellie’s funeral, Laurel begins a relationship with Floyd, a man she meets in a cafe. She's disarmed by Floyd’s charm, but when she meets his young daughter, Poppy, Laurel is startled by her resemblance to Ellie. As the novel progresses, Laurel becomes increasingly determined to learn what happened to Ellie, especially after discovering an odd connection between Poppy’s mother and her daughter even as her relationship with Floyd is becoming more serious. Jewell’s ( I Found You , 2017, etc.) latest thriller moves at a brisk pace even as she plays with narrative structure: The book is split into three sections, including a first one which alternates chapters between the time of Ellie’s disappearance and the present and a second section that begins as Laurel and Floyd meet. Both of these sections primarily focus on Laurel. In the third section, Jewell alternates narrators and moments in time: The narrator switches to alternating first-person points of view (told by Poppy’s mother and Floyd) interspersed with third-person narration of Ellie’s experiences and Laurel’s discoveries in the present. All of these devices serve to build palpable tension, but the structure also contributes to how deeply disturbing the story becomes. At times, the characters and the emotional core of the events are almost obscured by such quick maneuvering through the weighty plot.

Following the events of Better off Dead (2021), Jack Reacher takes a bus to Gerrardsville, Colorado where he’s looking forward to exploring the small town. Instead, he witnesses a murder.

The crime goes down when Reacher, waiting to cross the street, spots a man trailing a woman on the opposite side of the road. Nobody else seems to notice what’s about to happen, but just as a bus comes around the corner, Reacher’s fear plays out before him when the man trips the woman—sending her crashing head-first into the pavement, right in front of the moving vehicle. Her death was both quick and gruesome. But that was just the start of a string of events that will soon lead Reacher, always one to right someone else’s wrongs, down yet another dark, twisting, justice-seeking path.

Days later, in Minerva, Mississippi, a group of men meets inside a secure prison facility to discuss whether or not a potential witness to the murder of Angela St. Vrain could mean trouble for them and their illegal sources of income. Unfortunately for them, that witness is Reacher, and as two of the men already know—after finding themselves on the wrong end of a back-alley encounter with the six-foot-five former military police officer—trouble is about to come their way. The question is, how much does the man know about their shady operation, and what, if anything, can he do about it?

Reacher, meanwhile, is told by police—who believe the woman’s death to be a suicide—to stand down. Those words, however, aren’t part of Reacher’s vocabulary, and as he makes his way to Mississippi, hellbent on making sure the murderer pays for what he’s done, he’ll stop at nothing to see the job through. What he doesn’t know, though, is that yet another small town with big secrets is waiting for him, and this time, he might just be in over his head.

Though longtime fans will definitely love this book, No Plan B seems especially well-suited for newcomers to the series (more specifically those who come to the books by way of the Amazon-produced television series Reacher , starring Alan Ritchson) who might be intimidated by the twenty-six story backlist. Rest assured, you can absolutely jump in here, even if this is your first Reacher experience, without missing a beat. One of the reasons for that is because No Plan B feels very similar, in some ways, to Lee Child’s first Reacher novel, The Killing Floor . A throwback of sorts, Reacher again finds himself in a small southern town with dark secrets, taking on another dangerous conspiracy involving a ring of players who don’t want their illegal sources of income exposed, and will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets in the shadows. Thing is, Reacher has never hesitated to get down into the shadows himself, meeting the boogeyman head-on, and fans hoping for lots of action can rest assured—Reacher does his thing early and often here.

Beyond the main plot and bone-crunching action, Lee and Andrew Child also mix in a couple of side plots too. One involves a young boy who runs away from his foster home in California in search of his biological father in the wake of his mother’s death, whereas the other follows a man’s father who seeks revenge for the death of his son. Eventually, all those storylines seem to merge, leading to a blistering final act that will leave readers breathless and begging for more.

Whatever you’re looking for in a thriller, you can find it here. No Plan B isn’t just the best Jack Reacher novels in recent memory, it’s one of the best books of the year. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one.

The Jack Reacher series has brought Lee Child bestseller status for decades, but I believe that NO PLAN B just might be the most highly anticipated entry yet.

The Amazon Prime series “Reacher,” which premiered earlier this year, has created a whole new set of Reacher aficionados who cannot get enough of the 6’5” loner who is a walking paragon of rough justice. This latest installment follows the same formula as previous books and is once again co-authored by Lee’s brother, Andrew Child, who has written mysteries under the pseudonym “Andrew Grant.”

"NO PLAN B has everything readers of a Jack Reacher novel could ever want --- chases, thrills, and a line of bodies in the wake of Reacher and his nearly unstoppable ability to tattoo his own brand of justice upon anyone who stands in the way of his focused goal."

This time out, Reacher’s travels have brought him to Gerrardsville, Colorado. Here, he witnesses a woman seemingly throw herself into the front wheels of a fast-moving bus. She is killed instantly. Reacher then notices the CALL POLICE message that the bus driver posts on his electronic board, and our man moves into action.

Reacher first chases after a suspicious-looking character in a gray hoodie who has the victim’s purse, which brings him to a nearby alleyway. The emergence of a black BMW on the scene distracts Reacher, causing a fire escape railing to fall on him and briefly knock him out. This allows both the guy and the vehicle to get away.

After coming to, Reacher decides to learn more about the dead woman --- Angela St. Vrain, a young mother from Mississippi --- but her purse also disappeared while he was unconscious. It turns out that her supposed lover, Sam, passed away a few days earlier, a curious development that gets his radar fired up.

Reacher meets Sam’s ex-wife, Hannah, who had a friendly relationship with him and is willing to team up with Reacher to find out who killed him. They become quite the formidable duo, which makes for some of the novel’s best passages. However, their investigation, which takes them across several states, will involve an entire league of nameless bad guys who are pursuing them.

Everything apparently ties back to a series of ultra-modern prisons that may be a front for a cabal of villains engaged in some very nefarious activities. Thrown into the mix is a subplot featuring a runaway teen who is determined to get to the same prison for a completely different reason. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise when Reacher and the young man’s paths cross, and their mission becomes one in a highly unexpected way.

NO PLAN B has everything readers of a Jack Reacher novel could ever want --- chases, thrills, and a line of bodies in the wake of Reacher and his nearly unstoppable ability to tattoo his own brand of justice upon anyone who stands in the way of his focused goal. I cannot wait for the next adventure, as well as season two of “Reacher,” which should continue to drive even more people to this terrific series.

Goodreads Summary :

The gripping new Jack Reacher thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child. The plan: It’s coming Fall 2022. No Plan B. In Gerrardsville, Colorado, two witnesses to the same tragedy give two different accounts. One guy sees a woman throw herself in front of a bus in what authorities will call a suicide. The other witness is Jack Reacher. And he sees what actually happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving like a shadow, pushed the victim to her death—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away. Reacher follows the killer on foot, not knowing that he is part of something much bigger and far-reaching . . . a secret conspiracy with many moving parts, with powerful people on the take, all involved in an undertaking that leaves no room for error. If any step is compromised, the threat will have to be quickly and quietly and permanently removed. Because when the threat is Reacher, there is No Plan B….

I was given a free advanced reader’s copy of No Plan B by Lee Child and Andrew Child on NetGalley by Delacorte Press in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Delacorte Press!

First of all, I love the Jack Reacher books. I can’t explain why exactly other than they’re just fun to read. I always enjoy seeing how Reacher works his way through a mystery or a problem, and then he promptly punches things until the problem is solved. That doesn’t mean he gets away unscathed every time, but it is quite satisfying to read about for me.

So, every year as fall draws closer, I look forward to reading the newest installment in the soon-to-be twenty-seven book long series. Some changes have been made in the series recently, as well. Lee Child no longer writes the books alone. His brother – Andrew Child who also writes books under the name Andrew Grant – has been co-authoring the series for a few books now, and I’m happy to say that he’s been doing a great job as far as I’m concerned.

In No Plan B , Reacher, ever the perpetual drifter, finds himself in Gerrardsville, Colorado. He’s standing on a curb waiting for a bus when he witnesses a murder. A woman is pushed in front of a bus just as it’s pulling up to the stop, and the hooded man who pushed her quickly grabs her purse and leaves.

Reacher being who he is immediately pursues the man, cornering him in an alley. He dispatches the killer with a quick punch and looks in the woman’s purse to see what she’d been killed for. Unfortunately, he is interrupted by more thugs, and he’s knocked out in the ensuing fight. When he wakes up, he reports everything to the detective still at the scene of the bus incident.

However, later that day more thugs show up to get rid of Reacher for what he saw in the woman’s purse. Reacher still doesn’t understand how it was worth killing a woman over, and to make matters worse, the police detective shows up the next day to explain the woman’s death has been ruled a suicide. The detective enlists Reacher’s help in finding out exactly what led to the woman’s death, and of course Reacher wants to see justice done.

The rest of the story is told from the different perspectives of seemingly unrelated characters: a boy making his way across the country to see a soon-to-be released prisoner, the people running the prison in question, and a hired killer seeking revenge for the death of his son. All of these stories finally converge in a small town in Mississippi revealing a criminal organization unlike any other Reacher has encountered.

I really enjoyed the approach the authors took with this story. I liked seeing how so many different people could potentially be affected by one event. In the end, it all boiled down to one person causing a web of affect across several people’s lives, and the way the authors demonstrated that without causing confusion in the narrative was really engaging.

Another thing about this story is Reacher’s age and aversion to modern society are starting to show. He’s still more physically fit than most people will ever be, but his grasp on new technology isn’t the greatest. At one point in the story, he insists on using a paper map to determine a possible ambush point, and the woman helping him just whips out her phone, pulls up Google maps, and uses the traffic information to find a better one. Things like that are really interesting additions to the story as each book moves forward in Reacher’s chronology.

I really enjoyed those aspects of the book. However, I do have a few caveats to my praise of the story. Since the book isn’t released yet, I hope this first one gets caught by an editor, but there were a few words the author overused in the beginning of the book. It was enough that I noticed it, but it stopped about a third of the way into the book. Particularly the word “banal.” I couldn’t help but think, “Oh the author learned a new word and must use it in every paragraph,” for the first part of the book. So, it just affected my immersion in the story a bit.

Also, I know some readers may have an issue with how realistic a lot of the circumstances Reacher finds himself in and with the resolution of the story. However, I personally do not read these books for ultra-realism. They are like action movies with a mystery twist. They require the reader to suspend their disbelief a bit to truly enjoy them. Some people may have an issue with this, but I don’t.

Ultimately, I really had fun reading No Plan B . As usual, Reacher is relentless. If he decided to mind his own business, then most of the things in the story would never have happened. That’s just not how Reacher works, though. He can’t stand by and watch injustice go unpunished. He doesn’t care about knowing the persons involved. Sometimes, trouble comes to him and sometimes he stumbles upon it. Regardless of how the problems are presented, Reacher prevails.

I gave No Plan B by Lee Child and Andrew Child four out of five stars. It was everything I like to see in a Jack Reacher novel, and I really enjoyed the unique twists and turns the story took. I also loved seeing Reacher beat up the bad guys as usual. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars was because of a few editing issues and how far-fetched the ending is. It was still a great read!

By Lee Child and Andrew Child

Jack Reacher, ‘the coolest continuing series character’ (Stephen King), returns in a brand new, pulse-pounding read from Lee and Andrew Child.

The gripping new Jack Reacher thriller from the No.1 bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child.

Reacher follows the killer

Gerrardsville, Colorado. One tragic event. Two witnesses. Two conflicting accounts. One witness sees a woman throw herself in front of a bus – clearly suicide. The other witness is Jack Reacher. And he sees what really happened – a man in grey hoodie and jeans, swift and silent as a shadow, pushed the victim to her death, before grabbing her bag and sauntering away.

Reacher follows the killer, not knowing that this was no random act of violence. It is part of something much bigger…a sinister, secret conspiracy, with powerful people on the take, enmeshed in an elaborate plot that leaves no room for error. If any step is compromised, the threat will have to be quickly and permanently removed.

But when the threat is Reacher, there is No Plan B….

Review written by Ali Karim

Ali Karim was a Board Member of Bouchercon [The World Crime & Mystery Convention] and co-chaired programming for Bouchercon Raleigh, North Carolina in 2015. He is Assistant Editor of Shots eZine, British correspondent for The Rap Sheet and writes and reviews for many US magazines & Ezines.

“The meeting was held in a room with no windows.” And so, begins the latest instalment in Jack Reacher’s journey - one that despite following the well-trodden path of the series, is as fresh and tortuous as what preceded it. From the aforementioned meeting (more a prologue), held in the windowless room comes a dark tale. The significance of that meeting reveals itself later.

This time around our avenger finds himself in Colorado; a mute witness to the murder of a woman named Angela, pushed under the wheels of a moving bus. After dispatching the assailant, Reacher retrieves the dead woman’s items the assailant had tried to conceal in a black bin-liner.  It appears that the murdered woman worked at a correctional facility in Mississippi, one that had rooms without windows.

Having been a reader of these adventures for over twenty years, they act as an annual treat. Like the work of Alistair MacLean from my youth, there is a formula of sorts, but in that mechanism comes exhilaration where the familiar path is subverted into the darker machinations of the world, with vengeance from an avenger who works with compassion, but is able to brutalise in order to right the wrongs – “for the little girl in the wallet photo. Angela’s daughter. Who would now have to grow up without a mother,” and so Jack Reacher finds purpose.

With this, comes an adventure that traverses several States as Reacher travels from Colorado to Mississippi, introduces many characters, situations, some which are as violent [in a cathartic manner] as I’ve read in some time. There’s naturally a conspiracy of sorts, a tangled web with misdirection, malevolence with extreme prejudice in a plot that moves with rapid acceleration to a satisfying dénouement.

The Jack Reacher novels with their panoramic, neo-western vistas have often been described as cinematic. If we ignore the two screen adaptations, then No Plan B would easily fit into the Amazon Prime TV series due to its narrative velocity, and unrelenting pace. Despite being a novel of action, it provokes deep-thought as the reader embarks on the journey, one with a truly exhilarating climax.

Ian Chapman, who first discovered the work of MacLean for publisher William Collins once said - “Alistair thought of his novel writing as a formula. I think that's to diminish his ability.” After putting down No Plan B , I consider it apt to reflect Chapman’s sentiment to the work of Lee and Andrew Child.

Highly recommended because No Plan B is sheer adventure. And one to be read before it streams onto our flat screens.

no plan b book reviews

All roads lead to a small town in Mississippi, which houses a prison called Minerva. Jack Reacher is just chilling in a small town in Colorado, having picked up a waitress, got laid and ready to move on. Then he sees Angela St. Vrain pushed in front of a train and killed. He follows the man that did it and finds a mysterious envelope, that leads to Minerva. Then he learns that Sam has died, he says he was murdered, and teams up with his ex-wife and they head cross country to Minerva. But the people there don’t want him showing up and send men to stop him (like that will work). Jed is 15 years-old and with a foster family. He learns that his bio-daddy is getting out of prison (he’s never met him) and takes off for Minerva to meet him. We follow him along the way (and all the problems he has getting there) and ends up running into Jack. And a man has lost his son and sets off to find the people responsible and it also leads to Minerva. They all arrive at the same time and it leads to a climatic showdown and once again proves why Jack Reacher is the man. This is another great novel in the series. It has everything you want in a Reacher book….Jack taking names and kicking ass..not much more has to be said. Also if you haven’t watched the first season of Reacher on Prime Video, you should, it’s really good. And season two just started filming, so something to look forward to in 2023.

You can pick up No Plan B in stores on Tuesday, October 25th from Delacorte Press.
