All online proofreading and copy-editing services on Wordy is done by professional, first-language editors based in the UK, US, and Australia. Each job has its own webpage with a messaging system, so that you can get in touch with your editor – and they with you – at any point in the process. This is great for last-minute changes or when signing off on a job. The messaging page stays open for up to three days after the editor has delivered the job, so if you have any questions – ask them!
Especially online proofreading and copy-editing services are all about understanding the context and concept of your text, and adhering to the tone of voice and rules you’ve already laid down when you send through your document. In our humble opinion, it really takes a skilled, intelligent editor to make the best of your text and ready it for publication. We do rely heavily on technology to make job processing and assigning on Wordy as straightforward as possible, but when it comes to online proofreading, it’s all about good old elbow grease. There aren’t any secrets to it; just the accumulated editing experience of more than 2,000 years. Wordy adheres to the professional and ethical standards laid out by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading in the UK and The American Copy Editors Society in the US.
If you’re representing a company or an educational institution, the chances are that you’re not used to paying per delivery for your proofreading services, but instead receive an invoice once a month for the jobs you’ve actually processed. We can set up an open credit account for you, which will invoice individual users of the account or an account owner. We’re also here to step in as account managers, if you want to set up a copy-editor team to handle all your jobs or upload a house style you’d like us to follow. Do get in touch if you want to know more about our credit accounts for companies and educational institutions.
We provide online proofreading and copy-editing services to clients from all over the world, but as a company we are located in London. That means that tech support and client support are there for you during UK business hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. GMT – and as quickly as possible the following business day. In short, we’ll reply to your questions or comments as fast as we can, but do note that headquarters staff need our beauty sleep, too. Proofreaders are, of course, available 24/7.
Several things are taken into account. First, how many words does the document contain? Second, are you requesting just proofreading and editing or additional services, such as rewriting or an express delivery? The cost also increases if you have a house style guide that you want editors to refer to, or if you restrict the availability of your job to a team of editors that you have selected. The best way to get an estimated turnaround time for your document is to upload it for an instant price quote and approximate delivery time . If the turnaround time and quote are acceptable, you can continue with the purchase and place the order. If not, no further commitment is required.
Most of Wordy’s larger proofreading clients are invoiced for their usage at the end of each month. If an account has multiple users, we can invoice each user separately, or send the invoice to a single point of contact – for example accounts payable. Standard payment terms are 30 days net. We’re happy to help you set up your account, add additional users, upload your house style (if applicable) and set up an editor/proofreader team. In addition, we’ll be happy to sign a service-level agreement (SLA) and/or non-disclosure agreement if necessary. You can read more on the Privacy Policy page , Pricing page , and the editor guides pages for either UK English or US English . To discuss your requirements, please get in touch .
First, we check with you exactly what the problem is. If you have an issue with the quality of the proofreading, editing or rewriting – if you found a number of mistakes, for example – we will remove the editor from the job and forward the text to one of our head editors for a review. If we agree that the text does contain errors, we will ask you if you want a new editor to go through the text again in response to your feedback. We may offer you a full or partial refund based on the number of errors and inconsistencies we find in the edit. Please note that we don’t consider deliveries made later than the approximate delivery time as grounds for a refund. The actual delivery time will depend on the quality of the original text and the file format. To check on progress, you can, of course, always get in touch with your editor via a message on the job page and ask them to let you know when you can expect the job to be completed.

Sentence type flow Pieces with good flow will make use of all four sentence types, varying them to keep the reader interested.
Sentence length flow Sentence length is indirectly related to sentence type, and is a good indicator of flow. Flow can be altered by adding, removing, lengthening, shortening, combining, or splitting sentences. Long sentences will be indicated by a red line on the graph. Sentences that flow poorly with their surroundings will be orange, and the source of the problem can often be found in a nearby sentence.
Word length flow Word length is a minor contributor to overall flow, but even minor variations are signs of good rhythm.
Passive Voice Index This is a measure of how frequently the passive voice is used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
Prepositional Phrase Index This is a measure of how frequently prepositional phrases are used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
Average sentence length Sentence length is a major contributor to the level of education required to read a body of text.
Sentence length standard deviation This is a measure of the amount of variation in the length of a text's sentences. In texts that have broad appeal, this tends to fall between 50 and 90% of the average sentence length. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
Sentence deviation to length ratio This is a measure of the sentence variety, and a major contributor to flow. Most novels score between 0.5 and 0.9, and popular ones often score near the high end of the range. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
Just the stats preset Use this preset when you're only interested in the stats tab. Critique and Flow will be hidden.
Honesty preset This preset checks for common indicators of deception, either by lying or omission, and is based on the findings of this study . Areas with high concentrations of these indicators should be viewed with skepticism. Note that the presence or absence of these indicators does not guarantee that a statement is true or false, and that the study was done on spoken communications, so it might be more applicable to interviews and speeches. As always, use your brain.
Doubled words A word used twice in a row may be a typo.
Commonly confused words This will check for the internet's most frequently confused words and notify you if it looks like you misused one. It is experimental and probably the least reliable feature. Consult a dictionary when necessary.
Sentences starting with the same word A word should not be used to start more than one sentence in a single paragraph.
Misplaced conjunctions It is considered poor style to place coordinating conjunctions at either end of a sentence. Placing a subordinating conjunction at the end of a sentence is against the rules.
It is said that one day, passive voice will bring weakness to your prose.

Overwriting Words like "very" and "really" make sentences wordier and weaken your message. These can be deleted in almost all cases without affecting the meaning of the sentence.
Abstract words Abstract words lack specificity and overusing them can make even simple concepts difficult to understand. There are times when abstract words are desirable or even necessary; it would be difficult to write about math or programming without mentioning variables or functions, but you should use more specific terms whenever possible.
Wordy and redundant phrases These phrases make your writing more difficult to understand. In most cases, they can be replaced with one or two words, or even deleted.
Legalese These antiquated, arcane words and phrases will make your writing look like a contract.
Double negatives Double negatives are almost always poor style.
Adverbs They aren't bad in small quantities, but consider revising your document if more than 5.5% of its words are adverbs. Adverbs ending in "-ly" are considered the worst offenders.
Adjectives They aren't bad in small quantities. A few of the words on this list can also function as other parts of speech. You have been warned.
Contractions In formal writing, the use of contractions is considered a fault.
The boxer decked his opponent.
Profanity Profanity should not be used in formal writing outside of direct quotations.
The critic's scathing review hit the nail on the head .
Similes Similes and metaphors should be used sparingly. This option will detect most common types of similes.
"Said" replacements Some people think that these substitutes for "said" are weak or obnoxious, especially if overused.
Her dress was long , and it touched the floor.
Her long dress touched the floor.
Gender-specific pronouns Avoid using gender-specific pronouns in formal writing when the subject's gender is unknown.
Weasel words Like abstract words, weasel words and phrases lack specificity. At best, they convey uncertainty. At worst, they can be used to "weasel out" of telling the truth in a straightforward manner. When checking a document that is speculative by nature, you might want to disable this detector.
Third person pronouns According to this study , high concentrations of third person pronouns may indicate deception.
Bias language These words and phrases often show the author's bias.
Uncommon words Uncommon words will increase the document's reading difficulty.
Hot peppers burn my mouth, but I eat them anyway .
Since burritos taste good , I like to eat them.
Sentence fragments A sentence must have at least one noun and one verb. Anything that does not is a fragment, and if it occurs outside of dialog, it should probably be rewritten.
Long sentences Long sentences tend to be more difficult to read, making them good candidates for trimming or splitting. Alternatively, parallelism may be used to improve their readability, though this will not decrease the ARI score.

WRITER > GUIDES
Publish confidently by proofreading to perfection
“Writing without revising is the literary equivalent of waltzing gaily out of the house in your underwear.” — Patricia Fuller
We’re pretty open-minded, but we generally recommend that writing be at least partially dressed before sharing it with the world.
Now that just about everyone is a writer, just about everyone is a proofreader too, when you think about it. Which is why we believe now is the time to get clear about what exactly proofreading entails in our modern world.
What is proofreading?
Proofreading refers to carefully checking for writing and formatting errors in a text before it’s published. It’s the final step in making sure a piece of writing is as close to “perfect” as possible by double-checking for punctuation and spelling errors, typos, and any inconsistencies. The most important purpose of writing is to communicate your thoughts effectively. This, however, is better suited for the editing phase, not the proofreading phase. While proofreaders will check for clarity in consistency, they’re more focused on minor errors that may have slipped through. When you proofread, you evaluate the content in what will be its final, published form, or a proof. (Get it now?) Proofreaders look at more than just the words — they’re scanning for any formatting errors as well. Proofreading marks are either made on paper, or in comments and digital notes in Google Docs and word processing software, to alert the writer of suggested corrections within a document. There are both US and UK English conventions for proofreading. The final step of any personal or business writing process, proofreading is the process of identifying and correcting spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
The difference between proofreading and editing
It’s important to note that proofreading and editing are not the same. Editing involves a different skill set and is usually more time-consuming. Though there are various stages to the entire editing process, copy editing and proofreading are the two most common. Coincidentally, they’re also the two that get mixed up the most. Though developmental, structural, and line editing all deserve their time and place , they’re seen less frequently in the world of digital content creation. These parts of the editing process are better reserved for lengthier works, such as books, investigative journalism, essays, instructional works, and magazine articles. The terms copy editing and proofreading are often used interchangeably by those not familiar with the space. These two are not the same, though, and it’s crucial to be aware of their differences if you’re anyone working with written content.
Copy editing Copy editing takes place before proofreading and involves a more thorough shake down of the content at hand. Copy editors will look for things such as readability, grammar, spelling, style, syntax, and punctuation depending on what style guide they’re following. In this stage of the editing process, it’s okay to offer revisions that will require additional writing.
Examples of what a copy editor might comment: Point out wordy sentences, suggest change in word choice, fix punctuation marks in a sentence.
Proofreading Proofreading occurs after copy editing. Though proofreaders look for grammar and punctuation, they’re also focused on the overall formatting of the piece. They’re the last set of eyes before publication, so it’s their job to ensure the text is as close to perfect as it can get. No drastic changes will happen here — that’s the job of all the editors who came before.
Examples of what a proofreader might comment: Fix bad line breaks, change improper punctuation, point out incorrect page numbers.
How to proofread
Traditionally, proofreading is meant to be a relatively rapid and focused process of making sure writing is free of minor errors, such as typos that may have occurred during a more rigorous round of editing. For online publishing and blogging — which often includes transferring of content from a word processing document to a CMS (content management system) — proofreading includes making sure that formatting is correct. Adhering to a style guide — whether that be the Associated Press Stylebook , Chicago Manual of Style , or your own — is another vital part of the process. Consistency is key, and proofreaders need to be aware of what rules to follow for the given copy.
Common things to double-check when proofreading
Links function properly and direct readers to the right pages
Words — especially names and organizations — are spelled correctly
Formatting appears as it was intended — bolds, italics, indentations, new paragraphs, and fonts are correct
Proper punctuation is used throughout
Capitalization is correct
No “bad breaks,” such as widows or orphans
Helpful information such as an FAQ section exists
Consistent tenses throughout the piece
No subject-verb agreement issues
Headline or email subject is clear
Citations match the brand style guide
No misplaced or misused commas
Voice and style are consistent throughout
When is the best time to proofread text?
The best time to proofread is during every project’s final stage, after revisions are done and copy editing has been completed. Proofreading is the last step. If you’re wondering what time is the best, we advise after morning coffee and before your deadline. Because the proofreading process is intended to be the final step before publishing or hitting “send,” the changes should be relatively minor — meaning, catching typos or errors that may have slipped by. In other words, proofreading is not the phase where you should be completely reworking a paragraph or changing the direction of your main points. Proofreading is not the time to decide that you’ve changed your stance on an important topic — that kind of change should happen during the initial planning, thesis-writing, or outline phase of your writing. In this stage, you also shouldn’t completely overhaul a piece of writing from, say, a 1,500-word blog post to a 3,000-word help article. That work should have been done during the developmental editing phase.
Top proofreading techniques and tricks
Ask someone else to proofread for you Get a pair of fresh eyes on your writing. After spending so much time on your work, you’ll be apt to accidentally glaze over errors and typographical errors. It’s like a crooked painting in your house — you don’t notice it until someone else points it out. If you have to proofread your own work, step away Close your document, shut down your computer, and take a break from staring at the screen for a few hours (the longer, the better). Go for a walk, sip some coffee, and you’ll have a fresher set of eyes when you return. Focus on one thing at a time When you’re on high-alert for every type of proofing error, it’s easier to miss some mistakes. Instead, try combing a paper only for punctuation, then again for spelling mistakes, and so on. Come back to it if you’re tired Don’t ever try to proofread at the end of the day when your attention span is nil, and all you want to do is sleep. Sleep on it and try again in the morning. Proofreading with a set of sleepy eyes is as good as not proofreading at all. Print it out Editing a hard copy — and not a digital one — will help you see your writing from a different perspective. It feels different, and putting pen to paper feels more substantive and also satisfying. Read it out loud Reading your own writing out loud is a great way to catch any misspelled words or wonky sentences you might’ve missed before. While it might feel funny at first, you’ll find yourself noticing things such as run-on sentences that you wouldn’t have otherwise when reading it silently. Allot two days to proofread Ideally, proofreading should happen at least two days before a deadline. This ensures that you’ll have enough time to implement changes with one more round of proofing to come. Take into consideration the length of your writing — the longer it is, the longer proofing will take. Use an AI proofreading tool You can use an AI writing assistant to help with proofreading digital content. Nowadays, the top ones on the market are programmed to catch spelling, grammatical errors, and some even help you adhere to your style guide . For example, Writer uses AI to catch and correct common writing mistakes — as well as ones personal to your company’s style guide — and ensure your text is ready to share. Proofreading example Editors and professional proofreaders usually check a printed “proof copy” of the text and make corrections using specialized marks. In the digital realm, proofreaders work with AI writing assistants. Most of these online proofreading and editing services also include plagiarism checkers to identify duplicate content on the web and provide an efficient solution for the publication.

Proofreading with Ginger Software
Why proofread? It’s the content that really matters, right?
Content is important, but the way it’s presented, its correctness and coherence, can significantly affect the way people judge it (and the way they judge you). In today’s world, it’s extremely important to write without mistakes. Making mistakes reflects badly on you, whether it’s a school paper you submit, a CV for a job application, or an email to a colleague. In order to avoid mistakes you should proofread the texts that you produce. Proofreading is the final stage of the editing process, focusing on surface errors such as mistakes in spelling, grammar and punctuation. It’s an important part of the writing process and you shouldn’t skip it. Proofreading can be the difference between making a sale and losing a customer for life, succeeding and failing in getting a job you really want, or passing and failing a course. So no, not quite right, proof reading does matter too.

10 Content Proofreading Tips to Catch More Avoidable Goofs
Traditionally, when I teach content proofreading tips, I treat them as separate tasks from content editing .
And they are indeed two different activities.
However, the creative benefits of a consistent proofreading process surpass the classic definition of proofreading and are important to learn even if you’re a beginner blogger .
A master proofreader’s skills contribute to the production of unique, valuable, and trustworthy content.
Are content proofreading tips just for perfectionists?
Professional writers can take advantage of proofreading to avoid the all-too-common extremes of caring too little or too much about your content.
The trouble with caring too little about your content is fairly obvious, but caring too much about your content is also a problem.
It occurs when writers:
Second-guess their abilities
Obsess over their drafts
Delay publishing their posts until they’re “perfect”
Proofreading ensures you’ve thoroughly reviewed your work, so you feel good about releasing it to the world.
Here are 10 content proofreading tips that will help you publish with confidence.
1. Proofread backwards
Sonia Simone and I used to have a running joke.
Whenever I mentioned that proofreading your text from the last sentence of your content to the beginning is my favorite proofreading method, she would always quip:
“How about a tip that doesn’t take forever?”
At which point, I liked to explain why this technique is actually a time-saver.
We don’t always have a day to put our writing aside before we edit and proof it. That’s great advice in theory, but not realistic in a fast-paced content publishing environment where you sometimes only have several hours or less .
One of the best proofreading tips
“Proofreading backwards” is actually one of the best editing tips for writers . It helps you see your writing with fresh eyes, without first putting it aside for 24 hours.
In addition to spotting actual errors, you’ll also likely find:
Words you overuse
Sentences you can clarify
Paragraphs you can simplify
Give it a try the next time you need to polish a fresh draft before you publish.
2. Stop at every punctuation mark
Proofreading is all about paying attention to little details that help your audience effortlessly understand your message. It’s why you hire a content editor to help you out when you don’t have time.
Pause at every comma, period, apostrophe, quotation mark, etc. to make sure you’ve used them correctly.
(Need a punctuation refresher? Check out this article: How to Use a Comma )
This tip is especially helpful for finding “it’s/it” and “they’re/their/there” mistakes — which you want to avoid in email subject lines for sales as well.
Remember, content proofreading tips aren’t just for blog posts. They can help your email marketing strategy too.
Want us to scale your traffic?
For the first time, The Copyblogger methodology is now available to a select few clients. We know it works. We’ve been doing it since 2006.
3. Scan the first word of each paragraph
Varying your word choice elevates your content to a more sophisticated level.
If a number of your paragraphs or subheadings begin with the same word, your writing won’t be as dynamic as it could be.
Use this time — even though it’s “just for proofreading” — to push your creativity.
4. Verify spellings of people’s names
Google is a proofreader’s best friend.
Keep a Google search tab open when you proofread and look up the proper spelling of every name in your text.
My name is spelled “Stefanie,” not “Stephanie.” (Sometimes content proofreading tips hit home.)
I’m sure you also appreciate when your name is spelled correctly.
5. Verify spellings of company names
When the name of a proper noun is spelled correctly, your audience takes it for granted. However, when a knowledgable reader spots a spelling or letter-case error, it makes your content look sloppy.
And if you’re submitting an article to another site’s editor, you definitely want to follow guest blog posting best practices to avoid careless mistakes that will turn off that editor.
It could be “copy blogger” or “CopyBlogger,” instead of the correct spelling: “Copyblogger.”
It could be “Bang & Olufson,” instead of “Bang & Olufsen.”
Or it could be “McSweeneys,” instead of “McSweeney’s.”
An incorrect spelling of a name isn’t a typo. It’s a mistake.
Performing a final spell-check is an important part of proofreading, so I’ve dedicated several of these tips to items professionals verify … in every piece of content.
6. Verify spellings of product names
Here we go again.
Today, a content marketer’s job also often includes research, fact-checking, copy editing, and proofreading.
If you want your writing habits to impress your clients and bosses, don’t rely on someone else to inspect your work for accuracy. For example, if compound words often confuse you, look them up to make sure you got them right.
7. Verify spellings of titles
Editors commonly see subtle mistakes in the titles of articles or books, such as missing or additional words.
They are almost correct, but technically wrong. Another reason why content proofreading tips involve the techniques that contribute to the most accurate and reputable content.
I make it a practice to get these right in my own writing by remembering that I would want another author to write the exact titles of my own articles, books, and videos.
8. Verify days, dates, and times of events
This is a super easy one.
If you’re going to share an announcement about a meeting, webinar, or event, don’t send it without first using a classic fact-checking tip : double-check that the day of the week mentioned matches the date.
Then confirm the start time and time zone.
Also, at the beginning of each calendar year, make sure your content has the correct year, since it’s a common mistake to repeat the previous year out of habit. After all, you’ve been writing it for the past 12 months.
I’m willing to bet that every content proofreader in All-the-Land has caught at least one “year error” within the first three months of a new year.
Don’t let your proofreader have that satisfaction. In January, make a note for yourself and remind your colleagues to write the new year if they ever need to reference the current year.
But why stop there? You could also recommend that they review all of these content proofreading tips as well. 🙂
9. Scrutinize hyperlinked text
Making sure your hyperlinks work is part of your blog post checklist , so this step is about carefully reviewing the hyperlinked text.
A hyperlink will be a different color than the rest of your writing, which (for some reason) makes it easy to overlook.
Don’t fall into that trap. Fine-tooth-comb those words too.
10. Spot repeated information
Even though you’ll tighten up your sentences and paragraphs while editing, these content proofreading tips still include excellent opportunities to find information you’ve already stated.
Aim to express your message as succinctly as possible.
Your reader will appreciate that you value their time.

I used to proofread while I write and I was slow as a snail but then I discovered speed writing without using backspace.
I finished many posts and e-books with this technique and I usually proofread with a cup of coffee.
I personally tend to repeat words while I am writing writing…
Thanks Stefanie for all the tips.

Several of your tips already lean into fact checking, so why not add that as part of the proofreading process? Fact checking involves making sure that you’re passing along solidly grounded information rather than rumors or urban legends and that you have dates, places and numbers correct, as well as having spelled proper names properly.
For instance, if you refer to a study purporting to prove that people who write down their goals make more money or are more successful, you need to look that up and confirm that. You’d find out that that point has been thoroughly discredited.
Respectable content is fact checked as well as proofread!

Reading backward is an interesting and I guess rather unknown trick. I am going to use it for sure.
August 30, 2018 at 8:58 am
As a magazine editor in a previous life, this proofing procedure was invaluable and effective. I still use it to edit/proof my own writing. • Change your entire document’s font from serif to non-serif (or vice versa). Then re-read it carefully. Once you’ve fixed all the edits and typos, change the font back again.

Love that tip, Paula!

Thanks for the heads up, Stephan!
August 31, 2018 at 5:02 pm
What, Stephan, you’re unaware of the ironclad writing law that any time you publish an article on proofreading, there will be at least one weird, small, and/or hard to catch error in there?
Thanks for the heads up. 🙂

Reading backwards is a really interesting method, have immediately started implementing this into my work!
September 2, 2018 at 2:19 pm
I often change the font (it makes it feel like a new piece of writing even if it isn’t) or I read aloud to find mistakes!
September 5, 2018 at 8:43 am
I will try out reading backwards. What helped me was to invest in a writing app that supports me in finding mistakes. As it’s software-based, it’s not perfect, of course, but it still catches a lot of errors and helps me to write better especially as English is my second language and proofreading on my own is not cutting it.
Next step is to invest in a human proofreader.

Reading backwards is a great strategy. Its amazing how many “I’s” & “and’s” along with other common transition words we can miss while in the grove, busting out content.
If available, I always get a second pair of eyes to review “final” draft. They always seem to catch one or two sentences which could be structured a little better.

Right on, Kevin!

Stefanie I recently realized the power of a useful list. That was about writing and publishing a blog. I followed the list and wrote a successful blog post in less time than I generally take to write. And now, I’ve made it a point to bookmark this page, I mean this one about proofreading hacks. Simply because I can visualize the merits it has. Seems to be an absolutely actionable post. Thanks a million!

I usually use Grammarly but even Grammarly can’t find everything. I usually end up proof reading a few times and for the last proofreading I usually get another pair of eyes.
When I write fast I tend to skip words, omit punctuation and even repeat words. But after writing a few action/adventure books I have become soooo much better at writing.
Will try reading backwards – haven’t even thought about that!

Throughout an award-winning sports broadcasting career at CBC, Scott Russell has been a trusted voice for so many iconic Canadian moments.
Long-time CBC Olympic broadcaster Scott Russell will make Paris Games his career finish line Back to video
Fitting, then, that Russell has chosen a special spot for the finish line of that chapter of a professional life that has seen him travel the globe in pursuit of some of his country’s top amateur athletes.
After 40 years in a variety of roles with the public broadcaster, Russell announced on Thursday that he will retire from hosting duties at the end of the summer, effectively making the Paris Olympics his farewell to the nation’s sports fans.

It figures to be an emotional adieu when Russell signs off for good following the Paralympic Games, both for the broadcaster himself and the athletes and coaches who have trusted his story telling over the decades.
“CBC Sports has been home for my entire career in broadcasting,” Russell said in a release announcing his exit just four weeks before the torch is lit in Paris to herald the start of the 2024 Games. “The places I’ve been, the friendships I’ve made and the sport I’ve witnessed leave me with a lifetime of memories.
“On top of that, I’ve been fortunate to work with the best people in the business. It’s time for the next chapter and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
A 66-year-old native of Oshawa, Ont., Russell has covered a variety of sports in his career since he debuted in the business in 1985 as a reporter with CBC Charlottetown. He was a rinkside reporter for Hockey Night In Canada for 14 seasons to further elevate his profile and led CBC coverage of six Pan American Games and six Commonwealth Games, while also playing that role twice at the FIFA World Cup.
But it has been as an Olympic broadcaster that has been both Russell’s clear passion and his career calling card. A strong and personable interviewer, he has an ability to forge strong relationships with generations of Canadian Olympians, most of which trusted him and responded accordingly with their on-air comments. The Paris Games will mark his 17th Olympics.
“Scott’s genuine passion for sports and his vast knowledge of athletes, past and present, has helped to inspire and ignite the country around global sporting competitions for close to four decades,” CBC executive vice-president Barbara Williams said in a statement. “His authentic commitment to Canadian athletes and Canadian sports remains unwavering.”
As has been the case for a number of Games now, Russell will have a prominent role in CBC’s exhaustive coverage of the Paris Games, which will begin with the opening ceremony on July 26.
And if the CBC’s plans are any indication, what a way to go out? On a set overlooking the Eiffel Tower, Russell will be the lead voice of Paris Prime Live, guiding Canadian viewers through the biggest events including swimming (where the medal haul is expected to be significant), athletics, as well as highly anticipated appearances in basketball and soccer.
At the conclusion of his final sensational gig with CBC, Russell announced that he will be a chancellor at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.
Continuing the proud and storied tradition of Olympic broadcaster in a trail most notably blazed by the great Brian Williams, Russell has been honoured for his work including a Canadian Screen Award and a Gemini Award. His final scheduled day on-air will be at the Sept. 8 closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
CBC has not named a successor for Russell as the network’s lead Olympic voice but high among the list of candidates would be Andi Petrillo, who will work her seven Games in Paris as the host of the network’s Olympic Games Primetime show.

WHO and scientists call for urgent action on highly dangerous mpox strain
The spread of mpox in Africa needs to be addressed urgently, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday, as scientists warned separately of a dangerous strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“There is a critical need to address the recent surge in mpox cases in Africa,” Rosamund Lewis, the WHO’s technical lead for mpox, said in a briefing note to journalists.
In a separate briefing, John Claude Udahemuka of the University of Rwanda, who has been working on an outbreak in Congo’s hard-to-reach South Kivu province, said the strain spreading there — a mutated version of the clade I mpox endemic in Congo for decades — was extremely dangerous. It has fatality rates of around 5% in adults and 10% in children.
This year, roughly 8,600 mpox cases have been reported in Congo, and 410 deaths, Cris Kacita, the doctor in charge of operations in the country’s mpox control programme, told Reuters last week.
Mpox is a viral infection that spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. Most cases are mild but it can kill.
A different, less severe form of the virus — clade IIb — spread globally in 2022, largely through sexual contact among men who have sex with men. This prompted the WHO to declare a public health emergency. Although that has ended, Lewis said on Tuesday the disease remained a health threat. Two people died in South Africa this month of this form of the virus after a handful of cases were diagnosed.
Vaccines and treatments were used to combat the global outbreak, but they are not available in Congo.
The WHO and scientists said efforts were ongoing to address that.
In South Kivu, Adahemuka and other researchers said the new strain was spreading partly by sexual contact among men and women, and particularly among sex workers.
He said other close contact routes needed study, with evidence of transmission at school and from caregiver to child. The disease also seemed to be causing miscarriages among pregnant women as well as a longer-term rash and other lingering symptoms, the team said.
Leandre Murhula Masirika, research co-ordinator in the health department in South Kivu province, said 20 cases were arriving at hospital in the mining town of Kamituga every week.
“At the rate things are going, we risk becoming a source of cases for other countries,” said Kacita. South Kivu borders Rwanda and Burundi.
He said 24 of 26 provinces in Congo were affected and the outbreak was the worst mpox epidemic yet.
