How to Write a Security Officer Cover Letter:

A step-by-step guide to writing the perfect security officer cover letter.

Address your letter.

Address the reader by name..

Address your letter directly to the hiring manager, recruiter, employee, or whoever the person is that put out the job posting.

Avoid generic greetings.

If a contact name is supplied or if it is possible to find out a name, avoid using a general greeting such as "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam." Use the relevant title before the person's last name — for example, "Mr. Miller" or "Ms. Anderson."

Start with an introduction.

Keep your introduction brief..

In no more than three sentences , tell the person why you are writing and what position you are applying to.

Indicate that you meet the job requirements.

Your writing should reflect the exact job title and you should briefly highlight key job advertisement requirements that you meet, for example, three year's experience as a security officer.

Mention that you feel you are the best person for the job.

Use one sentence to clearly state why you feel that you are the best fit for the security officer position.

Highlight your training and experience.

Briefly discuss your training..

Be sure to refer back to the job advertisement and directly address the stated requirements. Write a few sentences on licenses you may hold, such as a license issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), or any formal security officer training you've received, including specialty training. Alternatively, explain the nature of your related in-job training.

Highlight your experience.

State how many years you've worked as a security officer. Don't neglect to mention where you've worked. Limit this to a single sentence as you will be discussing your exact duties and work experience further on.

Match your core skills to those mentioned in the job ad.

Directly match prominently featured duties and responsibilities mentioned in the job ad with core skills and competencies from your resume. For example, if the job ad requires experience in a security specialty, such as private, airport, armored car, or armed escort security, mention the extent of your experience in that particular regard.

Describe your most recent job.

Discuss your most recent role and duties..

In a few sentences , talk about your responsibilities at your current or previous job as a security officer. Include details about how your contribution positively impacted a place of employment.

Briefly discuss what your experience has taught you about your role as a security officer.

Showcase your biggest accomplishments in your previous job.

Mention one or two of your proudest career moments, for example, for example, significantly reducing trespassing and theft, training new security officers in effective patrolling and the use of surveillance equipment, and being commended by managers for your dedication.

Celebrate the organization.

Mention two or three things you know about the business, individual, or institution you're applying to. Do a bit of research and find out about the products or services that they offer, their success stories, or their public image.

State the reasons why you want to work there.

Mention why joining them as a security officer appeals to you. This could include mention of the business's reputation as an employer, their competitive employee benefits, their investment in state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, and that their security requirements coincide with your expertise. State how you will add value.

End with a call to action.

Indicate that you would like to hear from them..

Say that you've attached your resume for their consideration and invite the reader to contact you via email or phone call.

Close your letter.

Thank the reader for their time. Add "sincerely" or an acceptable synonym and sign off with your full name.

But if you’re really looking to wow recruiters and get your CV in front of the very best employers, then check out our guidance on how to write your own effective cover letter below.

How to write a Security Officer cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

You should write your cover letter in the body of the email (or messaging system if sending via a job board) and never attach it as a document.

The reason for this?

You want your cover letter to start connecting with the recruiter from the moment they open your application.

If they have to open a document to read it, it will slow things down and they may not even bother to open it.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Security Officer with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.

This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Aaron Smith Customer service professional 075557437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

What to include in your Security Officer cover letter

Here’s what kind of content you should include in your Security Officer cover letter…

The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.

  • Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
  • Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.
  • The impact you have made – Show how your actions have made a positive impact on previous employers; perhaps you’ve saved them money or helped them to acquire new customers?
  • Your reasons for moving – Hiring managers will want to know why you are leaving your current or previous role, so give them a brief explanation.
  • Your availability – When can you start a new job ? Recruiters will want to know how soon they can get you on board.

Don’t forget to tailor these points to the requirements of the job advert for best results.

1. How to create the right structure for your security officer cover letter header and headline

A strong security officer cover letter starts with a header and heading that are well-structured. The block of text in the upper left corner of your cover letter that introduces you and the organization to which you are applying is called the header. A succinct title statement should come after your cover letter header to keep the reader's attention.

There are numerous formats that can be used when writing a cover letter header . The name of the organization or agency to which you are applying should be in the first line of the header, which should not be longer than four lines (phone number, LinkedIn handle, email address, and so on). Your name and, if applicable, your current security officer position follow the first part of your header.

Here is an example of an effective cover letter header

To: Bastion Security Details, Rollo, Australia.

From: Nckraj Tob,  (123) 456-7890 | linkedin.com/in/Nckraj-Tob | [email protected]

An excellent headline should have a powerful trigger word or number, as well as strong adjectives or verbs.

Here's a wonderful example of a security officer cover letter headline

3 ways my skills as a Private Security Officer will help improve your agency’s services.

Trigger Word/Number : 3/ Skills  Keyword: Private security Adjective/Verb:  improve Promise: Your Agency.

By adding information like this at the close of your headline, you let the employer know that you'll speak candidly about how your qualifications and experience can help their business.

2. How to make a proper personalized greeting for your security officer cover letter

In order to show that you have done your research about the agency, offer a personalized greeting in your ideal cover letter . Consider the agency's initiatives that match your skills, the hiring manager's examination of your application and cover letter, and the agency's guiding principles and culture when conducting your study. Include the name of the receiver in your salutation as well. You exhibit meticulousness and quick research by doing this.

Here are 2 examples of personalized cover letter greetings

  • Dear Mrs. Sojo Yorin,
  • Dear Sojo Yorin and the Human Resources Team,

You must explain why you desire the position, emphasize your qualifications, remember to inquire as to whether they have any other questions, and make sure you wrap up on a strong note.

3. How to effectively showcase your law enforcement or military officer qualifications

You must effectively communicate your qualifications . In this section, specify the number of years of experience you have, your areas of expertise, and how you have differentiated yourself. If you know anybody in common, bring it up. Your application may stand out as a result of it. A strong statement outlining your motivation for applying for the post should be included as well. Focus on how your knowledge and experience could help your prospective employer.

Here is an example of how to effectively display your security officer qualifications

For more than ten years, I have worked in private security. For the previous five years, I was employed at Spikes Security Agency. My professional acquaintance and senior officer at your agency, Elijah Bolar, greatly encouraged me to apply for this post. I followed Mr. Bolar's suggestion since I am confident that my background and skill set are in line with what your agency currently needs.

The next step is to provide examples of how you are the ideal candidate for the job. You must describe your achievements, skills, and the circumstances in which they have assisted you in ensuring the safety of your clients. Make sure these examples are in-depth.

A proper format is as follows

In my most recent position, I was in charge of protecting bank vaults for Scolar Securities as a private security expert with the Spikes Security Agency. I developed a surveillance system to guarantee continuous monitoring of the vaults and the updating of their technology, which now includes gesture biometrics. This prevented two robberies of the vaults that occurred while I was watching. Client confidence in the security of their funds also grew as a result, and Scolar Securities saw a 21 percent rise in business. I am aware that your agency now requires experienced private security personnel to manage technology. I believe I can be a great asset and have all the qualifications needed for this position.

4. How to structure a perfect closing statement for a cover letter

The last stage in composing a cover letter for a position in private security is writing a powerful closing paragraph. A positive statement about the positions and your objectives for it should be used to wrap up this paragraph. Include your best contact information, a timeframe for getting in touch with the business again, and a proper closing.

Here is an example of an effective security officer cover letter closing statement

I value your time reading over my application and cover letter. I'd really like to find out more about this possibility, and I hope to hear from you in the next week. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., call me at (123) 456-7890. I'll verify the progress of my application if I haven't heard anything by next Friday.

  • Highlighting a quantifiable outcome, such as achieving a 40% reduction in false alarm rates, provides concrete proof of the candidate's effectiveness in their role and suggests a data-driven approach to security operations.

Designing your security officer cover letter: what is the best format

Let's start with the basics, your security officer cover letter should include your:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraph
  • Closing statement
  • Signature (that's not a must)

Next, we'll move to the spacing of your security officer cover letter, and yes, it should be single-spaced ( automatically formatted for you in our cover letter templates ).

Don't go for a old-school font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman), but instead, pick an ATS-favorite like Chivo, Volkhov, or Raleway, to stand out.

Our cover letter builder is also set up for you with the standard one-inch margin, all around the text.

Finally, ensure your security officer resume and cover letter are in the same font and are submitted in PDF (to keep the formatting in place).

P.S. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your [job] cover letter, it's solely for the recruiters' eyes.

The top sections on a security officer cover letter

  • Header: Include your contact information and the date to ensure the recruiter knows who you are and how to reach you, which is critical in a profession where reliability and attention to detail are paramount.
  • Greeting: Use a professional salutation, addressing the hiring manager by name if possible, as it demonstrates your investigation and interpersonal skills, both of which are important in security-related positions.
  • Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and express your enthusiasm for the security officer role; this sets the tone and shows your commitment to the safety and security profession.
  • Body: Highlight relevant experience, such as specific security tasks you've performed or emergency situations you've handled, to showcase your competence and readiness for the responsibilities of a security officer.
  • Closing: End with a strong conclusion, reiterating your interest in the role and mentioning your availability for an interview, while emphasizing your commitment to maintaining a secure environment, indicative of a dedicated security professional.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven experience in surveillance systems and emergency response protocols: critical for preventing and responding to incidents effectively.
  • Strong observational skills: essential for identifying suspicious behavior and preventing potential security breaches.
  • Physical fitness and stamina: necessary for patrolling premises, responding to incidents swiftly, and potentially diffusing physical altercations.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills: important for writing detailed incident reports and communicating with law enforcement and emergency personnel.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations: ensures compliance with legal standards and helps in handling situations according to the law.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team: required for coordinating effectively with other security personnel and staff members to maintain a secure environment.

How to start your security officer cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your security officer cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your security officer cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],
  • Dear Search Committee,
  • Dear Human Resources Director,
  • Dear [Job Title] Hiring Team,

The security officer cover letter introduction: focusing on your unique value, with a creative twist

You are not the only one wondering how to start your security officer cover letter. Those first two sentences introduce your profile and should be memorable.

No pressure.

When beginning your security officer cover letter , immediately point out the unique value of working with you. In other words, what you promise to bring to the role by using your past track record of success.

Start your security officer cover letter with a creative twist by telling a joke or stating something relatable. Select this type of introduction only if it aligns with the company culture.

What comes next: your security officer cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your security officer cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

Remember that when writing your security officer cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Closing paragraph basics: choose between a promise and a call to action

You've done all the hard work - congratulations! You've almost reached the end of your security officer cover letter .

But how do you ensure recruiters, who have read your application this far, remember you?

Most security officer professionals end their cover letter with a promise - hinting at their potential and what they plan on achieving if they're hired.

Another option would be to include a call for follow-up, where you remind recruiters that you're very interested in the opportunity (and look forward to hearing from them, soon).

Choose to close your security officer cover letter in the way that best fits your personality.

No experience security officer cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their security officer cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise security officer cover letter that:

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the security officer resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
  • Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.

Security Officer   Cover Letter

Security officer cover letter (with examples).

Security officers work to keep areas safe and monitored at all times. They offer surveillance, monitor security footage, restrict access to areas, and more. They are important for loss prevention as well as ensuring safety.

Security officers may work in retail areas, office buildings, museums, or anywhere else that requires a security presence. They need to be adept at both managing the general public on a day-to-day level and planning for emergency procedures .

Security officer positions require a high level of trust by employers. Those looking to hire security officers typically prefer candidates with specific training and certifications, as well as prior security experience . Thus, it can sometimes be difficult to break into the field.

Regardless of your specific experience and training, a lot comes down to how you explain and present these assets, and yourself in general, to future employers. The security officer who can apply their skills and experience in the most convincing and impactful way relevant to the position will always have the upper hand.

In searching for a job , individualized cover letters are a great way to show off how good you are at presenting yourself and applying your experience. Cover letters allow you to explain upfront how exactly you fit into this specific role, and what makes you a great security officer more generally.

In this article, we’ll run through the steps to creating a perfect cover letter for a security officer position. We’ll quickly explain the parts you need to include, what skills to emphasize for security officers, and some helpful examples to aid you in your writing process.

Looking for a job? These position are hiring now near you:

  • Security Officer
  • Security Guard
  • Private Security Officer
  • Unarmed Security Officer

Parts of a Security Officer Cover Letter

When it comes to applying for jobs, the writing process can be broken down into a few key parts. Luckily, these parts are standardized across nearly all job titles, so you will only need to learn this one format. It contains the following parts:

Salutation/greeting line. After a header, which will include your full name and all contact information , your greeting should be the very first thing written on the page . In most cases, this will write “Dear,” followed by an honorific such as Ms., Mr., or Mx. and the receiver ’s last name.

If you are on friendly terms with the receiver or if you are applying to a less formal workplace, you can address the receiver by their first name.

Opening paragraph. Always begin the actual content of your letter with a statement on why you are writing, to avoid any confusion. Your opening should clearly state the position you are applying for , and perhaps mention how you found out about this open position for further clarification.

Discuss your general qualifications for this position, and consider emphasizing why you would like to work for this specific organization.

Body Paragraphs. Your body paragraphs are there to do the heavy lifting of explaining why you are a perfect fit for this security role. Tailor your experience towards the duties described in the job posting, and focus on how you can serve the organization rather than how the organization might serve you.

Closing Paragraph. Your closing paragraph will end the letter strategically to both bring the letter to a polite end and reinforce your interest in the position. Be sure to thank the reader , include information about any additional documents, and end with a “call to action” that prompts them to move forward with the process.

Complimentary closing lines. At the very end of your letter , after the main contents, include a closing phrase followed by your name and/or digital signature. Something like “Sincerely,” “Best,” or “Regards,” will work just fine. Complimentary closes are necessary for following the guidelines of proper professional letter writing.

Whatever design and formatting you choose to have for this cover letter should be tasteful, minimal, and consistent throughout. Always use the same formatting on your resume as you use as on your cover letter. Keep the cover letter concise and easy-to-read at one-page maximum. The key is to pack as much info into as little space as you can.

Security Officer Cover Letter Opening

The opening paragraph of your cover letter explains who you are and why you are writing, in a somewhat general way. It’s important to cover these bases upfront to avoid any confusion.

After your greeting and header, which for most security officer positions should be kept formal to set the tone for your letter, you’ll use the first sentence of your first paragraph to introduce yourself . Give a general introduction and state which position you are applying to.

Don’t re-state your name, as they’ll already be seeing that in your header, but just give a small, relevant piece of info about who you are.

The reason you’re writing this letter is to land a specific job . This is why it’s of the utmost importance to make your intention to apply to this specific job known. You want to make sure this point lands and is remembered by the hiring manager .

Your first paragraph is also a space where you would want to mention how you found out about this position. However, remember that you have limited space and be brief in your explanation. If it’s obvious where you found out about this position, such as if you are applying through a job board, it’s not necessary to mention this.

That said, there are some cases where you should always mention how you heard about a position: cases in which an inside employee referred you to the position. It might also be beneficial to mention your prior experience or relationship with this organization if it is compelling.

What you’re going to want to remember above all else is that your cover letter opening is where you draw in the hiring manager and give them a good reason to keep reading. Opening lines like “I am writing to apply to…” are generic. For hiring managers processing large volumes of applications, eyes may glaze over at the mere sight of that sentence.

Here’s an example of how you might begin your cover letter for a security officer position, after the initial greeting:

“I am a Security Guard with two years of experience, and I am excited to see that there is an open Security Officer position at Easton Co. In my current position as a Security Guard at Highland Bar, I have gained a reputation as a smart, reliable worker due to my vigilant surveillance and emergency preparedness planning. My commitment to safety, experience with security clearance privileges, and careful monitoring make me the ideal candidate for securing Easton Co.’s facilities.”

Search For Security Officer Jobs

Security officer cover letter body.

The body paragraphs are your space to dig into the details of why you are the perfect candidate for this position. Confidence is key, so bring confidence in your work life and experience and own your skills and achievements.

Your body paragraph is going to hold the majority of what might be considered the most important part of your cover letter: your details and explanations on your skills and experience. The way you describe what it is you’ve done and the knowledge you hold can have a big impact on how others view your experience. Don’t take this for granted.

As much as you are able, re-state the requirements and qualifications listed in the job posting in a way that explains how you align with these. Try to use the exact language or keywords the employer used in their posting to ensure that your application doesn’t get passed over by any kind of software that may be used to screen applicants.

However, you don’t have the space to list every single thing you’ve ever done or learned professionally. Nor does the hiring manager want to read that upfront. Your attached resume will do the work of itemizing your experiences.

The cover letter is intended to do the work of highlighting your biggest accomplishments as they relate to the job posting. If hiring managers need or want any further information, they will contact you.

For your body paragraphs, the most important fact to remember is that you are writing to convince someone that you can help them with something they need. Identify this need and explain why you are the perfect person to help.

When it comes to security officer cover letters, you’ll want to keep it simple and focused. Focus on your key skills, experiences, and responsibilities at your current position.

Here’s an example of what the body paragraphs of your security officer cover letter may look like:

“I have put in over 5,000 hours during my time as a security officer, remaining focused in a variety of challenging conditions. I handle high-level responsibilities such as implementing emergency procedures and safety rules, quickly checking patron IDs, and preparing incident reports. I have utilized my bilingualism and my certified CPR training to effectively and safely do my job. Easton Co. is a high-security facility requiring a highly skilled security officer, and I am excited to offer my skills to the position. During my time at Highland Bar, I decreased injury and other reportable incidents by 50% and I would love to bring this work ethic to help achieve Easton Co.’s security goals.”

Security Officer Cover Letter Closing

Use the closing of your letter to tie everything together and explain how you’ll follow up. You’ve gotten past the hardest part, which is getting them to read the contents of your letter, so it's time to show your professionalism and good attitude with your closing paragraph. You know they are at least interested, so now you can put a little pressure on them to take the next steps.

In your final paragraph include a “call to action”, which is a request that you make for them to take some sort of action. This could be something like asking them to call to schedule a meeting , or telling them you look forward to hearing back from them. Anything that lets them know you are eagerly awaiting (and expecting) response without being over-confident or pushy.

Thank the hiring manager in your closing paragraph for taking the time to read your cover letter, and for their consideration of your application. They likely have a lot of reading to get through, and it shows serious politeness to recognize the labor they are putting in on your behalf and show gratitude for it.

After you’ve written the body of your letter, include an appropriate, professional, complimentary close to end things nicely. Attach any additional documents, and you’re ready to send them in.

A good closing for a security officer cover letter will look something like this:

“I would appreciate the chance to further discuss this position and to show how my prior experience will serve Easton Co. well. Please contact me at your earliest convenience regarding my application. Thank you for your consideration.”

Example of a Security Officer Cover Letter

When you put together all of the different parts and pieces of your security officer cover letter, it’ll look something like this:

“March 30, 2021 Maria Lucas Easton Co. 9241 Job St. Business, CA 93033 Dear Ms. Lucas, I am a Security Guard with two years of experience, and I am excited to see that there is an open Security Officer position at Easton Co. So when you are writing your application letter, it is good you let the recruiter know the training that you acquired that makes you qualified for the role.

Structure of a security job application letter

Date and contact information .

When you are writing your application letter for a security job in Nigeria, you must add your contact information and date at the top of your letter.

Usually, your contact information should be at the top left corner of the letter, and that of the company should be at the top left corner of the letter. It is also good that you add a date at the end of the contact information.

Greeting/salutation

Before you start writing about your skills and qualifications in the body of your letter, you should, first of all, greet the person that you are addressing in the letter. You can greet the receiver professionally by adding MR/MRS to their last name.

State your purpose for writing the letter

After greeting the receiver professionally, you can go ahead to state your purpose of writing the letter. Simply state that you want to apply for a job as a security officer (depending on the title of the role) in their company.

The first paragraph of your letter

After you have stated the purpose of your letter, you can go ahead to explain what makes you think you are the best person for the position.

The second paragraph of your letter

In the second paragraph of your application letter, you start providing details about your experience working as a security officer and some relevant training and certifications that may contribute to the strengthening of the company’s security.

How to Write An Application Letter for a Security Job

We have talked about the structure of your application letter, now we are going to walk you through how you can write an application letter.

When you are writing an application letter, you have to make sure you are giving the employer, recruiter, or HR manager all the information needed. You should give useful information that endorses you as the best person for the job.

In this section, we are going to walk you through the kind of information that you should include in your application letter.

Include information about the company and the role

When you are writing your application letter, you must include some information about the company and its role. When you do this, it shows the recruiter that you are interested in the role because you have researched the role.

Including information about the company and role in your application letter also helps you tailor your application to the specific role that you are looking to get.

Begin your application letter by describing your interest

It is no news that recruiters/employers look forward to hiring job candidates that are interested in the job. You should show your interest in the job right from your first sentence.

It is good that you mention the job title that you are looking to get and how you saw the job vacancy. You should also talk about what interests you the most about the role so that the recruiter can see your passion and enthusiasm for the role.

You should also state the skills, experience, qualifications, etc. that makes you the best fit for the position. The recruiter will read the first paragraph of your application letter, so it is good you capture their interest at this stage.

Outline your experience and qualifications

After your first paragraph introduces you to the role that you are applying for, the remaining paragraphs should outline your work experience and qualifications.

Recruiters are indeed interested in job candidates that show enthusiasm for the role, but every employer wants to hire someone that has what it takes to do the job effectively. You must talk about your experience and qualifications in such a way that it aligns with the goal and vision of the company.

For example, if you are applying for a role in marketing, you should talk about how many leads you have brought to the company, how you have been able to impact revenue in your previous job, etc.

Show a bit of your personality in your application letter

Recruiters/employers want to have an idea of their potential employees asides from their qualifications and work experience. At the end of the day, the employer is going to be working with a person and not with qualifications and skills.

It is good to show some aspects of your personality, but make sure it gives the employer reasons why you are a perfect fit for the job.

Show appreciation

Before you end your letter, appreciate the recruiter for taking out time to go through your application letter and for considering you for the position.

The recruiter has taken out time to read your letter, so showing your gratitude for the time spent is a polite and professional way to end your letter.

Close the letter

A professional sign-off is important to close the letter like “sincerely”, etc. After this, you should include your full name and then your signature. When you are submitting your application letter via email, you should include your contact information (you can create a signature to achieve this).

Sending Your Application Letter

The format of your application letter will depend on the method that you are going to use to it. If you wish to email the letter, the format will be different if you are going to submit the hard copy.

For an email application letter, your contact information should be at the end of the email instead of at the beginning for printed letters.

When you are emailing your application letter, you need to consider your subject line. The subject of an email is very important, because it may determine whether or not the recruiter will be interested to open and read the email.

Always make sure your subject lines are professional, polite, short, and related to the role that you are applying for.
