Hays Travel Academy Homeworking

Pinky8383 · 29/04/2021 18:03

Hi, has anybody done the Hays Travel Academy and started homeworking? I'm looking at the opportunity at the min but just worry that it'll be hard to build up a big enough customer base to make it financially feasible to bring in a full time income! Anyone done it and had success.....or not?? Any info would be great thanks

Are you really good at selling marketing and networking ? That will be far more important than anything else.

“After a career of over 30 years I found myself in a management role I didn’t enjoy and realised what I loved most was creating perfect holidays for clients. I took action and created my own dream job. We want positive, passionate individuals for a small, friendly team that encourages each other and celebrates success. Your greatest asset as a homeworker is a positive, forward-thinking, creative mindset. Flexibility and reacting to the needs of the consumer, technology, personal travel experiences, in-depth training and a thorough understanding of the industry are invaluable for clients and post-Covid are valued more than ever."

Joan Jones, owner and founder, Once in a Lifetime Holidays

InteleTravel UK

“After the pandemic many businesses made promises of ‘working from home’ to allow more flexibility in the way people work. Forbes recently reported that businesses are winning the battle to get workers back into the office and are backtracking on previous promises. The reality is homeworking affords huge flexibility, allows families to collect children from schools and promotes a healthy lifestyle. We have one PTC who works from Barbados and another in Tenerife – these examples showcase the benefits of homeworking!”   "On a practical level, try to segregate your work space from your home space, find an area, ideally a room, where you can create a professional office area. Comfort is key: You’ll be spending a considerable amount of time in your workspace, so create a space that you’re looking forward to being in, ensure minimalism within your office to maximise your productivity, and definitely treat yourself to a comfy chair!" Abbie Heaton, sales manager, Personal Travel Consultants

"We have an excellent training programme for all our new “holiday fixers”. I personally mentor all my fixers to ensure they understand all aspects of the business so they feel confident and will become a successful part of the team. The onboarding programme helps our fixers understand the brand, identify their customers, learn how to use the systems and develop their knowledge of our products and suppliers. We don’t provide leads, but give full training on how to grow your travel business. A positive, can-do attitude is really all we ask for as the rest will be taught during onboarding programme."

"Homeworking is a more eco-friendly way to work, saving on travel costs to and from an office. Now that we all communicate much more online it is much easier for homeworkers to stay connected with their team and build up a good, supportive network without the need to be based in an office. Working from home doesn’t mean you miss out on travel perks. There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of free trips to explore the destinations and hotels that you are selling. We attend lots of face-to-face training and our key suppliers hold webinars for us too.”   Britt-Marie Monks, director, The Holiday Fixer

“The pandemic brought the value of using a travel professional into sharp focus. There’s also a growing trend to “support local”, and travel agents running their own businesses are perfectly placed to serve their local communities. Add to this the opportunity to connect with a wider audience through social media, and the potential for homeworking is enormous. Becoming a self-employed homeworker can transform lives from a mental wellbeing perspective too.”   "Do your homework when choosing which homeworking organisation you join…. find a business and people you connect with both professionally and personally. Talk to the homeworkers within that business for the first-hand views." "We are always on the lookout for quality, entrepreneurial agents. We are excited by candidates’ ideas to build their businesses and we provide personalised support to bring those ideas to life." Sheena Whittle, head of The Personal Travel Agents

They wanted to ensure that talent was not lost, so therefore created Travelosophers, a personal homeworking business where people could have their own business without having the huge overheads." "My previous experience working for a call centre from home has demonstrated that having everyone in the office all the time isn't always necessary. This arrangement allows travel agents to work around their lifestyle and have the flexibility to work when they want (as in our case, where homeworkers are self-employed). Additionally, it provides agents the chance to attend more events, work while traveling abroad, and meet clients at their local cafes. Overall, this setup offers general flexibility that can benefit everyone involved." “Homeworking allows travel agents to work around their lifestyle. It’s crucial to balance working, networking and promoting your business with taking breaks and avoiding overworking – that's the key to success.”   Lucy Clarke, managing director, Travology Travel

Hays Travel joins Travel Gossip’s new homeworker guide

hays travel homeworking set up fees

Travel Gossip’s new guide to homeworking travel agencies is even bigger and better after more companies decided to join, including Hays Travel.

The guide now includes 23 different companies, including almost all of the major travel agent franchises.

If you’re looking to set up your own business as a travel agent or you’re planning to move from an existing homeworking group, our guide will help you find the best one for you.

It includes details such as set-up fees, monthly subscriptions, commissions and when you’ll be paid, plus how much support and training you’ll receive.

You can use it to set up as a homeworking travel agent, even without any previous experience or if you’re an experienced agent looking to specialise in certain types of holidays.

There was no fee to join the guide , all we asked is that homeworking groups completed a questionnaire including transparent pricing information to make it as useful as possible to our readers.

Which homeworking company gives travel agents the best deal? – 14 Dec 2006

  • Share by email

Last month, two of the biggest homeworking companies, Future Travel and Travel Counsellors , conducted staff surveys which sparked a war of words over who offered the best pay and benefits. Here, Travel Weekly gives both firms the chance to clarify their offerings while Hays Travel , which also employs homeworkers, sheds some light of its own.   Hays Travel What is the average annual salary across all agents? £14,500 – we have a high percentage of part-time homeworkers. What does the top seller earn? £45,000. What percentage earns more than the average salary across all workers? 39%. Average hours worked in a week? We do not monitor working hours. How do agents get leads and what are your commission levels? We have a £2 million marketing budget with Teletext, and the Internet provides telephone and e-commerce leads for new homeworkers who earn 30 to 40% [of total] commission. Homeworkers can choose to build up a database using Hays Travel-generated leads, or earn 60% commission from their own client base. What benefits do agents have working for you? A fully-funded overseas conference every year, plus summer garden and Christmas parties. The majority of fam trips and educationals are also funded. What on the job training is offered? Paid three day training course at head office in Sunderland. Is there a support network in place? Homeworkers have peer support from team leaders as well as a 24-hour dedicated homeworker support team at head office and further IT, administrative and customer service teams who are on hand at all times. What is the initial set up fee? £295 plus VAT. Is it different for homeworkers who live abroad? We don’t have any homeworkers that are based overseas as yet, but we would be more than happy to recruit from outside the UK.   Future Travel What is the average annual salary across all agents? £15,600. What does the top seller earn? In excess of £120,000. What percentage earns more than the average salary across all workers?  More than 65%. Average hours worked in a week? Most of our homeworkers work between 35 and 50 hours per week. How do agents get leads and what are your commission levels? About 25% are personal travel advisors who sell to their own clients and have three levels of commission: 45%, 60% and  75% [of the total commission]. For the Teletext divisions they have all marketing, communication and stationery costs met and earn 30% commission with bonus payments of up to 10%. What benefits do agents have working for you?   As part of the Co-operative Travel Trading Group, agents gain from its buying power. Agents also benefit from educational and fully-funded conferences, as well as a central helpdesk to provide technical and administrative support. What on the job training is offered? On joining the company, agents undergo three days of training  which includes sales techniques, administration and technical training. This year we have introduced two new trainers to visit homes. Is there a support network in place? A sales development team supports the homeworkers in teams of up to 30 people. Homeworkers also regularly receive individual and conference calls. What is the initial set up fee? £295 plus VAT. Is it different for homeworkers who live abroad? We have no homeworkers overseas, though the technology is in place.   Travel Counsellors What is the average annual salary across all agents? £16,819 – this includes new starters. What does the top seller earn? £120,000. What percentage earns more than the average salary across all workers? 40%. Average hours worked in a week? 41% work 31-40 hours per week. How do agents get leads and what are your commission levels? Agents generate their own leads and earn 60% of the total commission. What benefits do agents have working for you? As well as private health care, agents have access to financial counsellors to arrange mortgages, life insurance and pension arrangements. Our contact centre helps agents manage their databases. We encourage agents to attend educationals, and treat top sellers to a weekend away every year. Conferences are heavily subsidised. What on the job training is offered? New starters have three days’ training at head office with no charge for hotel accommodation. They feature in the audience of TCTV and are introduced to all our agents in the UK and overseas. Is there a support network in place? Agents have access to message boards, a 24-hour helpdesk and two business development managers who visit agents in their own area. What is the initial set up fee? £495 plus VAT. Is it different for homeworkers who live abroad? Counsellors who join us in the UK and then move overseas pay the joining fee in the UK at the time.
