My two passions are women’s health and sickle cell disease. I believe both of these fields do not receive enough attention or research funding, which contributes to health disparities.

Please tell us a bit about yourself; where are you from, and what do you like to do in your spare time?

I was born on a military base in Tokyo, Japan, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. I completed my first undergraduate degree with a major in music at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia. In my spare time, I play cello with local community orchestras and take ballet classes.

Why did you decide to pursue nursing, and why did you choose Columbia?

I first began to consider nursing as a career when my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness; my goal was to take care of him. After he died, I still felt that I wanted a career helping people and decided to go to nursing school. I completed the Associate of Applied Science in nursing program at Borough of Manhattan Community College and later, the RN-BSN program at New York City College of Technology. I also completed the BS in biomedical informatics at New York City College of Technology. This program required an internship, where I was fortunate to work under Professor Ruth Masterson Creber, who is now my primary mentor. She was the first person to suggest a PhD in nursing, and she recommended Columbia. I was reluctant at first, but as I read more about the research of Columbia Nursing faculty, I became excited at the prospect of learning more about informatics and applying that knowledge to patient care. Once I learned of Professor Suzanne Bakken and her innovations in the field of nursing informatics, I was set on attending Columbia for my PhD.

What are you passionate about, and how has being a student at Columbia Nursing allowed you to follow that passion?

My two passions are women’s health and sickle cell disease. I believe both of these fields do not receive enough attention or research funding, which contributes to health disparities. Columbia Nursing gave me the opportunity to focus on a sample of Black women and work toward finding a more objective way to identify those at risk for depression. More effective identification of at-risk individuals can improve diagnosis and lead to more equitable and effective treatment.

Can you tell us a bit about your PhD research?

My dissertation focuses on using machine learning to analyze DNA methylation data and social determinants of health to identify Black women at risk for depression. The goal is to find a way to identify at-risk women without self-report bias or stigma. This project has allowed me to integrate my training in bioinformatics and data science with my clinical nursing experience to improve outcomes for patients.

Do you have a favorite memory of your time at Columbia Nursing?

One of my favorite memories is the time I convinced two of my classmates to play in the CUIMC Symphony Orchestra with me. It was so nice being able to hang out with them outside of class and just play music together. At our end of semester concert, several PhD students and faculty attended and came up to the stage to congratulate us afterwards. It was really a great experience.

What are your next steps after graduation?

Starting this summer, I will be a postdoctoral scholar in the Targeted Research and Academic Training Program for Nurses in Genomics T32 program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. I plan to use data from the Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium to analyze pain biomarkers and develop a model to predict a crisis.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I am very grateful for my time at Columbia Nursing and everything I have learned in the past four years. I appreciate every faculty member who made time to sit down with me, and I would not have made it without all of you.

Easing the pressure: supporting icu nurse decision making through digital innovation.

Karen Dunn Lopez and Anna Krupp stand outside the CON building.

College of Nursing Assistant Professor Anna Krupp , PhD, MSHP, RN and Associate Professor Karen Dunn Lopez , PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN understand that intensive care unit (ICU) patients have a greater chance of developing functional decline, which may include new limitations in walking or a decreased ability to manage basic physical needs after hospital discharge. One common contributing factor for this is long periods of immobility, or remaining in bed, during ICU hospitalization.

With funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality , Krupp and Dunn Lopez are proposing to develop a decision support tool in the electronic health record. The goal is to make complex decisions about when it is safe to assist ICU patients out of bed more efficient for nurses. Currently, nurses look in multiple locations in the EHR for this information. The tool will summarize key patient information on one screen.

“ICU nurses make hundreds of decisions during a shift and the decision to assist a patient to sit on the edge of the bed or walk in the room requires that nurses know a lot about the patient and their stability over the previous shift,” said Clinical Assistant Professor and Co-Investigator Heather Dunn , PhD, ACNP-BC, ARNP. “Enhancing mobility in the ICU is crucial for positive patient outcomes. However, assessing readiness for activities like walking is challenging when data needs to be gathered from multiple sections of the medical record.”

Woman standing at classroom desk looking up, two people in front of her at desks looking at papers

The project will be conducted in two phases. First, they’ll develop the decision support tool with input from practicing ICU nurses. Next, the tool will be studied in two environments—a simulated EHR with nurses from across the nation and a real-world trial in the ICU.

Both Krupp and Dunn Lopez bring differing expertise. Dunn Lopez will use her knowledge with usability science and focus her time in a simulated setting identifying the ease, use, and effectiveness of the tool.

“One thing we know is that if something is not easy to use, it isn’t going to get used. But there are methods that can make sure that what you are developing is useful to the people who use it,” Dunn Lopez said.

Krupp will apply her ICU-based clinical expertise with her implementation science training to plan and study how decision support is used in everyday clinical practice.

Top: Assistant Professor Anna Krupp (left-right), Assistant Professor Heather Dunn, doctoral student Nikta Kia, and Associate Professor Karen Dunn Lopez discuss the results of a focus group they conducted on clinical decision making.

“The best-designed tool does not guarantee routine use in complex healthcare settings. Implementation science identifies and addresses contextual factors to help promote its use,” said Krupp.

Krupp and Dunn Lopez suspect the results of the study will influence a “pragmatic way of accelerating the use of patient data with guideline recommendations at the point of care to support ICU clinicians in delivering evidence-based care, decreasing the duration of bed rest, and reducing hospital-acquired functional decline.”

NCIOM Releases 8 Recommendations for Strengthening NC’s Nursing Workforce

Read the report and recommendations of the NCIOM Task Force on the Future of the Nursing Workforce

Released by NCIOM on May 8, 2024

phd nursing hk

Nurses provide care in all health environments, and North Carolina is facing a critical shortage of these vital providers. Over 12 months, a diverse group including nurses, researchers, advocates, public health practitioners, payers, and elected officials came together to develop 8 evidence-based recommendations for Securing a Strong Nursing Workforce for North Carolina .

With support from the NC Pandemic Recovery Office, The Duke Endowment, and AARP NC, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine convened the Task Force on the Future of the Nursing Workforce to develop policy recommendations for ensuring that nurses feel prepared and supported to practice in our state.

“The task force has provided a path forward to address a workforce crisis that threatens the health and wellbeing of all North Carolinians,” said Stephanie McGarrah, Executive Director of the North Carolina Pandemic Recovery Office. “More than ever, we owe it to our nursing professionals to take action using the strategies laid out in this report.”

Over 50 members of the task force learned from experts in nursing education and career progression, workforce retention, and health care payment models, as well as from one another. With an underlying focus on equity, their recommendations call on lawmakers, educators, employers of nurses, trade associations, and the general public to advocate for strengthening pathways to nursing careers, sustaining the nursing workforce, and valuing the work of nurses.

“The task force’s call to action extends beyond the confines of this report; it is a call to continually reevaluate, adapt, and innovate in response to the evolving health care landscape and the changing needs of the nursing workforce.” Hugh Tilson, Jr., JD, director of North Carolina Area Health Education Centers

“The members of this task force worked hard to develop a truly actionable vision for building and sustaining North Carolina’s nursing workforce, ensuring that those who care for us feel safe, valued, and prepared to meet our state’s growing needs,” said Michelle Ries, MPH, President and CEO of the NCIOM.

The task force’s work sought to address driving factors of the key challenges to our state’s nursing workforce:

  • Shortage of nursing educators
  • Stressful work environments
  • Insufficient staffing
  • Trauma and burnout compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic

phd nursing hk

The task force was co-chaired by Ernest Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN, immediate past president of the American Nurses Association and current vice dean for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at Duke University School of Nursing; Catherine Sevier, DrPH, MSN, RN, president emerita of AARP NC; and Hugh Tilson, Jr., JD, director of North Carolina Area Health Education Centers.

“The task force worked extremely hard to understand how serious the nursing shortage is in North Carolina. Now, we must address the findings, innovate, and make the changes needed to assure a healthy future for our state,” said Sevier.

About the NCIOM The North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM) is forward-looking and focused on solutions. The organization was founded in 1983 by the North Carolina General Assembly to serve as a source of non-partisan information and analysis to promote effective health policies focused on improving the health and well-being of all North Carolinians.
