APA 101 Tutorial (7th edition)

What's the difference between a citation generator and a citation manager, which citation managers does the library support.

  • Helpful Resources for APA Style
  • Script for APA 101 Tutorial

Citation generators  are online tools that can generate a one-time use, single bibliography or works cited entry for you. There are two kinds of citation generators, those provided through library resources (like the catalog or the databases) and those provided through an outside website such as KnightCite or EasyBib . Library tools will generate a citation for whichever item you are viewing, outside websites will require you to manually input the citation information yourself (author, title, publisher, etc.).

Citation managers , like  Mendeley  and Zotero , are software programs that help you keep track of your sources and create bibliographies or works cited lists in various citation styles. Many citation managers allow you to create folders to organize citations and keep your sources for different classes/projects separate. They are very helpful for staying organized , especially while doing multiple research papers for multiple classes. It is also often possible to share folders between users , which can assist with keeping everyone on the same page for group research projects. Take a look at the popular citation managers mentioned in this guide and give one a try! You'd be surprised by how much they can help you streamline your research process .

Regardless of whether you're using a citation generator or a citation manager, automatically generated citations need to be double-checked for accuracy and completeness. Pay special attention to capitalization, punctuation, and author(s) names.

The library offers full instructional support for both Mendeley and Zotero. Reference and instruction librarians of the Elihu Burritt Library are available online, via chat or the Book a Librarian service, to provide help with how to use these management systems on an individual basis or in pre-scheduled library instruction sessions.

Access to both Mendeley and Zotero is provided to students, faculty and staff at CCSU free of charge and can be used even after leaving CCSU. Navigate to the Mendeley page or the Zotero page of this Library Research Guide. Alternatively, you can register for a free account at either  www.mendeley.com or www.zotero.org . While  no one is limited to using just one of these citation managers, it is generally easier to manage a research project by using just one citation management system.

As of December 31, 2020, CCSU no longer supports the citation management system, RefWorks. You are encouraged to transfer all your citation information from that system to either Mendeley or Zotero. To access RefWorks, navigate to the www.refworks.com and follow the directions from this linked page (RefWorks Citation Manager).
