Shah Rukh Khan in Chak De! India: An Unquestionably Brilliant Performance
Before Sultan and Dangal , there was Chak De! India . I have a vivid memory of the Shimit Amin film, released in 2007 when I was in school, and how it had impacted me. Shah Rukh Khan's presence as the former hockey player turned women's team coach was a large part of the impact. With time, however, I have revisited the film and found elements in it that did not fit my politics anymore. Chak De! India is a film that is not perfect by any means, but even after all these years what has still remained as my go-to film whenever I feel lost and defeated is only due to that one actor: Shah Rukh Khan .
That is exactly how one would describe the star in the one of his best roles to date. Khan let go of the movie-star persona fully to inhabit the body of a man who is defeated but never lost. In Kabir Khan, there is a fire that is internal: he pushes himself in the position of the coach of the women's hockey team as he says to one of the girls, " Har team mein ek gunda hota hai, aur is team ka gunda main hoon ." (Every team has a brat, and in this team I'm the brat.) As his character's political inclinations are tried and tested, Khan has to shoulder the difficult task of preparing the team for glory. There is a burden on his shoulders, and he has to constantly strive for the best in his team. He understands each of the players, locates their misplaced differences and pushes them to give their very best. Before the final match, there is a particularly stirring speech and Khan nails the sequence as he says, and I translate, "In the coming years, no matter what happens, whether you win or lose…no body can take these seventy minutes away from you. I am not going to tell you how to play this game. Instead, you will tell me – by playing the game."
There is one image that has stayed with me in particular – and considering that we all know how the movie ends, I can safely include this spoiler. Just after the Indian team wins the match, Khan stands outside the field, transfixed. He is speechless, and it is in this moment he feels the burden lifted. In this shot, the Indian flag is placed just beside him and he holds his knees as if he is unable to stand. As if the rush of joy and eventual pride is too much for him to bear. It is all conveyed without a single word and Khan makes it all register, brilliantly.
Even when he does not say a word, that single shot has over the years stayed with me in different contexts. Why did he have to 'say' anything at all in his defence? Why does he have to prove that he is not a ' gaddar '? This became problematic to me as the years passed, as I realized that the film glorifies this fervent need to project one's interest with regards to nationalism. When Khan had lost the finals, he had displayed the spirit of sportsmanship by congratulating the winning team. This was portrayed in the media as an act of betrayal. Ever since then, he had to face extreme amounts of hatred and false allegations. This issue has become more pertinent than ever, in this time that we are living in. It also disturbed me how the film glorifies winning as the only way of living, as if there was no place for losers. When one of the players says, "Mar ke aayenge lekin haar ke nahin aayenge," it bothered me how one's life-force was considered secondary to the act of winning. When I watched the film for the first time as a child, none of these issues had bothered me. But with each new revisit, I have found myself questioning the film, disguised as a film about women but solely interested in the position of one man at the centre of it. Does it take away my love for the film? Does it take away the impact that Chak De! India has had on me? Not at all.
Even after all these years, what has remained unquestionably brilliant is Shah Rukh Khan's performance in the film. Chak De! India is a film that has continued to move me every single time, even after all these personal issues. The film, along with his performance, has seen me grow and develop into an individual with views and opinions. I try to imagine what Chak De! India would have become if it was made with a different actor, if it would have been half the film it is without his presence. With each new revisit, I discover something new and untapped in his performance, and by the time the film ends, his performance leaves me inspired and motivated to work harder and believe in myself. This is a performance that has become personal with time, over his other popular acts in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or Devdas . This is the Shah Rukh Khan I like and want to hold on to, the actor who continues to grow inside the minds and hearts of his audience even after so many years and countless roles. This is the Shah Rukh Khan film that means the most to me. This is the Shah Rukh Khan I want to see.

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality.
The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India?
Mujhe sirf ek mulk ka naam sunaai deta hai - India
The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible.
Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can.

Movie Review | 'Chak De! India'
‘You Go, Girl,’ as Translated Into Hindi
By Andy Webster
- Aug. 11, 2007
The making-of-a-team sports movie is a timeworn genre, and yet “Chak De! India” (“Go, India!”) finds new variations. Though the game here is field hockey, those fondly recalling the United States soccer team’s first-place finish in the 1991 Women’s World Cup will find a lot to like.
Of course, there are conventions. Kabir Khan (the assured Bollywood veteran Shahrukh Khan) is a former player for India’s national field hockey team who missed a fateful play against Pakistan, costing a championship and making him a pariah. Seven years later, he is hired to coach the nation’s women’s hockey team, giving him one more shot at a title.
The players, from states all over India, are a fractious lot, including a tomboy (Chitrashi Rawat) whose father fears she will never marry; a forward (Sagarika Ghatge) whose boyfriend, a cricket superstar, wants her to quit the team and live in his shadow; a newlywed goalie (Vidya Malavade) whose in-laws expect her to stay at home; and a haughty, seasoned player (Shilpa Shukla) who needles the coach.
When leering boys at a McDonald’s harass them, a girls-against-boys melee erupts, but the coach doesn’t interfere, knowing the team will prevail — and find its spirit. From there, it’s on to the women’s hockey championships in Melbourne, Australia.
The director, Shimit Amin, strikes a buoyant, propulsive tone, replacing the customary Bollywood production numbers with exhilarating musical montages of team practice. For his part, Mr. Khan, to his credit, lets his co-stars’ youthful charisma carry the movie. He also laudably portrays a man who vigorously and unabashedly advocates the advancement of women.
In fact, the film’s greatest merit is its commentary on sexism in India. As it should, “Chak De! India” gives the women, in the closing credits, the last word.
CHAK DE! INDIA

“Chak De! India” is new wave Bollywood at its best, a Hindi-language film from a Mumbai studio that shows the influence of American and foreign films.
It has none of what film critic Peter Rainer has called the “Busby Beserkley” dance numbers, and there isn’t any boy-girl romance. Rather, “India” is a sports movie — something of a cross between “Bend It Like Beckham” and “A League of Their Own” — about a disgraced coach (Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan) who leads an Indian girls’ field hockey team toward a World Cup.
Former editor Shimit Amin, making his second film as a director, spent years working on American indie films. This shows in his determination to blend a character-driven story with Bollywood emotions.

The opening-night film of the recently concluded Indian Splendor film festival in Los Angeles, “India” already has opened in India and North America. Unfortunately, the film has been steered into the usual Indian-American cinemas here rather than braving a few mainstream theaters where it can reach out to a crossover audience. The film could certainly engage non-Indian viewers if its marketing played to the feminist sports angles; it certainly has lots to say about racism and misogyny in Indian society.
In the final moments of an India-Pakistan hockey game, Kabir (Khan), the Indian team captain, elects to take a penalty shot. When the ball barely skips over the top of the net, resulting in India’s loss, rumors immediately spread that Kabir, a Muslim, was “playing for Pakistan.” Despite absolutely no evidence, the media and fans take up that chant, and soon he and his mother must abandon the family house.
Seven years later, Kabir re-emerges to ask for a job as coach of an Indian girls’ hockey team. No other coach will touch the assignment. The girls recruited are top players from their individual states, but they come with different languages, ethnicities and prejudices, making it nearly impossible to mold them into an Indian team.
A broad-shouldered, rough-talking Punjabi girl can barely tolerate a tiny village tomboy who can dribble like crazy. Her Punjabi language is understood by the Hindi speakers but not by the teammate who speaks Telugu. The two girls from Mizoram and Manipur in the northeast, near Tibet, suffer endless slights because of their Asian looks.
A girl engaged to an egotistical cricket player is determined to score all the goals to prove she is a sports hero, too. Consequently, she never passes the ball to the other forward. A devious though seasoned Maharashtran girl openly rebels against the coach. First she tries to get him fired, then to seduce him.
All of these dramas take place over grueling practice sessions and hard-fought matches on the road to the World Cup in Australia. The screenplay by Jaideep Sahni carefully delineates the various rivalries and animosities, sparing the poor coach none of the agony of putting out the constant brush fires among battling teammates.
This film is from a new studio established by Yash Chopra, a leading figure in Bollywood production for 40 years, so technical credits are first rate with excellent cinematography, quicksilver editing, musical montages of practice and a fine use of locations. “India” is definitely Bollywood, ashamed of neither sentimentality nor predictability. Yet its sharp-eyed view of Indian society makes for a world of difference from old-style, sugar-coated Bollywood films.

Chak De! India
- Kabir Khan, the coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey Team, dreams of making his all-girls team emerge victorious against all odds.
- Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible. Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can. CHAK DE INDIA is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. The Film became a cult classic and won its leading man the National Award and put the Indian National Sport "Hockey", back on the map. — Official Source

- Chak De! India opens in Delhi during the final minutes of a (fictional) Hockey World Cup match between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan leading, 1-0. When the Indian team captain, Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is fouled, he elects to take the penalty stroke himself. His strike, however, flies just above the goal and India suffers a crushing defeat. Soon after the match ends, the media begins to circulate a photograph of Khan accepting a handshake from the captain of the Pakistan team. This action leads to a nation-wide smear campaign which alleged that Khan (who is a Muslim) might have "thrown" the game in an act of sympathy towards Pakistan. The religious prejudice exhibited towards Khan by the entire society at large forces him and his mother (Joyoshree Arora) out of their ancestral home and into exile. Seven years later, Mr. Tripathi (Anjan Srivastav), the head of India's Hockey association, meets with Khan's friend and hockey advocate Uttamaji (Mohit Chauhan), to discuss the Indian women's hockey team. Tripathi argues the team has no future since, the only long term role for women is to "cook and clean." Uttamaji, however, informs him that Kabir Khan (whom no one has seen for seven years) wants to coach the team. Though initially skeptical, Tripathi ultimately agrees to this arrangement. Khan thus finds himself in charge of a group of 16 young women from various sections of India, who are divided by their own competitive natures and individual prejudices. While Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat) from Haryana, conflicts with Preeti Sabarwal (Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh, Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from Punjab has an extremely short temper and bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), belonging to the remote villages in Jharkhand. Mary Ralte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik) from Manipur (in North-East India) are both treated as "foreigners" by virtually everyone they meet and face repeated sexual harassment. The team's captain, Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malvade), is forced to choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband Rakesh's (Nakul Vaid) family, while Preeti's fiance, Abhimanyu Singh (Vivan Bhatena), the (fictional) vice captain of the India national cricket team, is deeply threatened by her involvement with the team. Khan realizes that he can only unite the girls if they develop the discipline to work as a team. This leads him to have his assistant Krishnaji (Vibha Chhibber) bench a number of players during the first few days, including the most experienced player, Bindia Naik (Shilpa Shukla). In response, Bindia engineers a revolt which leads Khan to resign. As a gesture of good will, Khan, however, invites Krishnaji, the team manager Sukhlal (Javed Khan), and the girls to a farewell lunch. During the lunch, a few boys start teasing Mary, leading to a large brawl between the girls and the boys. The quarrel, however, unites the girls and destroys their anger towards Khan. They request him to remain as their coach. Khan, impressed by the display of their team spirit, eventually agrees and further trains them on various aspects. Their newly found unity is, however, challenged by Tripathi who suddenly decides that the women's team will not go to Australia for "The World Championship." Khan, however, forces him to agree to a challenge match with the men's team on condition that if the girls win, they will be allowed to go to Australia. The girls eventually lose the match, but their courageous performance is well praised by the men's team and forces Tripathi to change his mind and send them to Australia. During "The World Cup", the girls compete against teams such as the Hockeyroos (Australia), the Black Sticks Women (New Zealand), the Las Leonas (Argentina), and the South Korean team among others. While still working to overcome their differences, the girls eventually learn to act as a single unit, leading them to win the Championship. In doing so, they not only destroyed the prejudices which once separated them, but also proved to their families and country the merits of women's hockey. Khan, restoring his reputation and proving his mettle, returns his ancestral home with his mother, welcomed by the once angry neighbors.

One of srk's best.
Great performances by a bunch of unknowns, a gritty pace and a marvellous restraint make Chakde India an unbridled ode to patriotism without any hysterical chest-beating. And yes, for all you SRK fans and bashers, this time the verdict gotta be unanimous: Chakde Shah Rukh! Can you better this? (more)

This is what teamwork is all about.
A fairy-tale told with utmost conviction, realism and logic. Shah Rukh Khan, the star, is a delight to watch. As a performer here, he is even better. With a more apt score it would have been quite a match and an award-winning team! (more)

A winner all the way!
Put your hands together for director Shimit Amin's Chak De India. It's an immensely satisfying movie experience. Turns out to be a riveting film
On top of it, 'Chak De India' has no love angle even though it has Shah Rukh Khan playing the leading man alongside 16 new girls. This is one film that celebrates women power
As for the girls, their camaraderie and bickering is well projected and every girl stands out in her role (pun intended), whether its centre-back, right outer, or centre-forward!,As for the women, I suggest they go in groups and bring the house down. SRK leads hockeybabes to glory
This is also a return to glory for Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar doing excellently as he tackles a cast with (almost) entirely deplorable acting chops and makes you believe.Khan, of course, is King. Auspiciously, the director fits in strong comments on national unity, gender equality, secularism and team spirit.Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding its a performance that is comparable and at points even more internalised than the one in Swades. When the entire audience is rooting for a women's hockey team for 150 minutes straight, you know the movie has worked. The movie certainly achieved its aim of drawing attention to our national sport and especially to the plight of the women in this sport. It invoked the national spirit, made us whistle and cheer, clap hard, and laugh out loud. It was almost like we were in a stadium watching an actual game. The question, now, is - are we sensitized enough to do something about the situation? Meanwhile, like Shah Rukh's acting keep your expectations in control and enjoy the show.

Plot Summary
Sincerely, at most times I was too engrossed in the movie to notice or take notes on the little things. Will have more here, hopefully after a second viewing.
What Worked
- The fluency and ease with which the characters are established, even the most insignificant characters are defined by a line or two given to them.
- The stereotype of Indians not knowing much about people from other states was played out really well - reminded me of a similar stereotype about Americans.
What did not
- All the public/mass media scenes depict hockey as this massively popular game. E.g., kids are shown playing hockey on the street. Now, come on, who are we kidding here?
Nitty-Gritty
- Why was Kabir Khan talking to himself outside the conference room of the Hockey Association?

---> get this - no trade-marked raising of hands on the side as if he is waiting for me to hug him
That comes in every movie of his!! Very good review, will most probably watch this movie. Big Hockey fan btw so will be looking to see if they have made any errors :D
Thanks Prashanth! That "raising his hands", really gets to me, but I loved the way took a dig on himself in "Main Hoon Na".
Oh, do watch the movie and let us know how accurately the technical details of the actual game were handled. I have a couple questions in that respect too.
chakde india! is a beautiful film!!!!shah rukh khan has acted really well…specially when india won …how he controlled his tears ..n he showed his hapiness thru his eyes!! i m really happiiee …and all the girls have worked awesome too …its reallllyy inspiring and touching story … A must watch!!! Will be a hit...actually has to be a hit!!! Songs are good too...give you inspirations...reminds you, that yes - "Hockey is the national game of India and should not be forgotten" A must watch for every Indian
What I don't understand about the so called critics of Shah Rukh Khan is either they don't understand what action is, or they don't have the guts to accept that he is a brilliant, versatile actor. It occurs to me time and again that either they are so jealous that they cannot accept his evergrowing popularity globally or they don't have the knowledge and understanding of what is the meaning of a brilliant performance.
I really don't agree with this reviewer about what he wrote about shah rukh khan. ((eg: "trade-marked raising of hands on the side as if he is waiting for me to hug him etc.)).
Even though he maintains that he liked shah rukh in Chak De, his comments about him are not appropriate.
Good review ! I haven't seen this yet, but look forward to. Everyone gives this one a thumbs-up and SRK acts ? Makes it a must-watch.
I loved this film ..It was one of the best films for SRK ..Hats of to the director for giving a good film
KAMYA, praveen and krishna, thanks for your feedback.
Pratima, has there been an actor/director/artist whose work you have never really liked, but suddenly one movie and that person surprises you. Well, for me Shar Rukh Khan (SRK) is one such person and he has surprised me in Chakde!. Die-hard SRK fans should be ecstatic that even people who have not liked him, have liked him here.
Thanks Deepa. Yeah, it is awesome that we have one more person in the industry who can perform despite having the "star" tag attached to his name.
Thanks Amodini! Looking forward to your review.
Shahrukh we are proud of you for giving a very good movie after a long time after kkhh.I wish you all the best for your future.

Chak De India Reviews
CHAK DE! INDIA has a great cast and a good message. Apart from that, it is a totally predictable, boringly staged paint-by-numbers sports film without any sense of naturalness or humanity.
Full Review | Original Score: 5/10 | Sep 18, 2024
Do you remember the days when patriotic fervour was so much more wholesome? The Shah Rukh Khan led film takes you on the classic sports film rollercoaster but with the spotlight on multiple diverse, layered characters.
Full Review | Mar 29, 2021
It's a career-defining performance in a film that has lost none of its impact.
Full Review | Nov 7, 2019
I think that Shahrukh Khan is phenomenal.
Full Review | Original Score: B+ | May 9, 2019
Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding -- it's a performance that is comparable and at points even more internalised than the one in Swades.
Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 4, 2015
It's a fairy-tale told with utmost conviction, realism and logic. Shah Rukh Khan, the star, is a delight to watch.
Full Review | May 4, 2015
Great performances by a bunch of unknowns, a gritty pace and a marvellous restraint make Chakde India an unbridled ode to patriotism without any hysterical chest-beating.
Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | May 4, 2015
Chak De, India is by far the most authentic, meticulously researched sports movie India has made.
This is exceptionally well written (Jaideep Sahni take a bow), well acted and put together.
The plot contains no surprises, but the matches are deftly shot and the film is a buoyant expression of girl power.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | May 4, 2015
[It's] proudly old-fashioned but still manages to feel fresh.
Indian underdog sports film will make American girls cheer.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 3, 2012
India is definitely Bollywood, ashamed of neither sentimentality nor predictability. Yet its sharp-eyed view of Indian society makes for a world of difference from old-style, sugar-coated Bollywood films.
Full Review | Sep 4, 2007
The film's greatest merit is its commentary on sexism in India. As it should, Chak De! India gives the women, in the closing credits, the last word.
Full Review | Aug 25, 2007
While the tale of the sporting underdog is hardly new, Jaideep Sahni's screenplay offers a rare look at a popular Indian sport often overshadowed by cricket.
Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 21, 2007
A very familiar, very formula underdog sports movie with nothing to distinguish it from similar, equally slick Hollywood product--except for maybe a Bollywood-norm run time of 150 minutes.
Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 19, 2007
Weaves its familiar story with some fresh textures and even manages to invest the conflict on the field with a resonance that transcends the tick-tock turnover of the numerals on the scoreboard.
Full Review | Aug 16, 2007
Director Shimit Amin and his cast bring considerable conviction to familiar characters and situations.
A patriotic heartwarmer that scores some old-fashioned entertainment goals despite its flaws.

The movie certainly achieved its aim of drawing attention to our national sport and especially to the plight of the women in this sport. It invoked the national spirit, made us whistle and cheer, clap hard, and laugh out loud. It was almost like we were in a stadium watching an actual game.
