A struggling servant dreams of seamstress superstardom despite a sinister stepmotherâs sabotage in this mediocre musical.
By Courtney Howard
From the outset of Amazon Studios’ new “ Cinderella ” movie, writer-director Kay Cannon welcomes audiences into a fantasy unlike any before it, putting a glimmering girl-boss gloss on the oft-adapted fairy tale. In this heightened unreality, characters can break into song with a Janet Jackson chart-topper as easily as they belt out a new Broadway-style power ballad. This latest retelling of the Charles Perrault classic offers a feminist-friendly update as its titular heroine dreams of a career, not a man, to whisk her away. While Cannon’s inspired creative approach and jukebox musical style all point to an elegant and empowering redesign of this most familiar of garments, her execution puts quite a few tears in the fabric.
Ella ( Camila Cabello ) has been relegated to a life of servitude after her father died years prior, leaving her in the care of his cruel second wife Vivian (Idina Menzel), further scrutinized by her obnoxious stepsisters Malvolia (Maddie Baillio) and Narissa (Charlotte Spencer). Nicknamed Cinderella because of the layer of soot she acquires doing household chores, she dreams of breaking out of the home’s dingy basement and into the world of fashion as a dressmaker. But since the times are not conducive to a career-minded woman, and the townsfolk are set in their old-fashioned ways, all she can do is sing to vent about her burning desires.
Reality check: summer hot streak wonât dig u.s. box office out of deep hole in 2024, max launches new homepage personalization system: here's how it works and what changes are next.
Meanwhile, potential soulmate Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine) is trapped in a life he’s reticent to lead as his arrogant father King Rowen (Pierce Brosnan) and kindly mother Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver) are demanding that he find a bride and take the throne. He’d rather slack off with his band of merry men than marry and wear the crown. His smart sister Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive) is the more suitable sibling to lead the kingdom, except she’s up against unabashed male chauvinism guiding the king’s call.
The plan is to throw a grand ball, with invitations sent to the entire kingdom, giving the reluctant royal ample options from which to select his perfect match. Yet he meets true love Ella before the lavish affair is set to take place, first discovering her at the announcement ceremony and then later, in disguise, bumping into her at the marketplace, buying an evening gown from her. As fate and Ella’s fabulous fairy godmother Fab G (Billy Porter) work their magic, conflicts surrounding her career goals surface, threatening to separate the dynamic duo.
Cannon takes great craft and care to ensure that her heroine’s internal and external motivations serve to drive the story forward. This modernized take has the sympathetic protagonist wrestle with a compelling conundrum, figuring out how Ella and her prince can continue to love each other while attaining their respective career ambitions (or hers, at least, since he maddeningly never verbalizes what he wants in that regard). Their superficial struggle, surrounding class structure and wealth disparity, is assuredly still part of the tale’s DNA, culminating in an empowering musical number (“Dream Girl”) in which all the women, led by Vivian, join together to sing about the stifling, suffocating societal sexism they’ve endured. This showstopper hits like a sledgehammer to the glass ceiling that restrains them all. Humanizing Ella’s tormenter in the process may seem ill-advised, but it winds up being one of the film’s blessed surprises.
Still, for all the innovative, intelligent decisions made, there are an overwhelming number of frustrating creative choices. The movie’s pacing is inconsistent, especially when it comes to character development, which can feel at once underdeveloped and overstuffed. From the stepsisters (who are softened to the point of serving little to no purpose) to the members of the royal court (whose arcs are extraneous), practically everyone beyond Ella and Vivian suffers greatly from tissue-paper-thin character motivations that pivot on a whim, making the audience question why these superfluous story threads are there at all. It’s clear Ella is the underlying force inspiring change in these folks, but the reasons instigating those changes defy logic.
Lavish musical set-pieces, this film’s bread and butter, fail to immerse or transport audiences as intended. Though designed to conjure energy and bewitching wonderment in their design, there’s a pervasive lack of aesthetic intrigue and individual identity. These numbers are exhausting, not enthralling. Composed like music videos, with quick, sharp cuts alternating between wide and medium shots, these sequences do a disservice to Ashley Wallen’s wonderfully anachronistic choreography and Ellen Mirojnick’s breathtaking costumes. The wonderful wardrobe is valued for its poignancy and power in the creation of Ella’s magical ball gown, only to be undermined in later scenes, as the film plows through palpable moments like Ella’s designer debut.
While some of the material sags, a few performances uplift the indomitable spirit of the time-honored tale and its refashioned sentiments. Cabello is a magnetic screen presence who demonstrates a natural sense of comedic timing, infusing her character with vulnerability, compassion and effervescence. She and Galitzine share a sweet, chaste chemistry. But it’s Porter who steals the show. He does not disappoint. He’s vivacious, vibrant and knows precisely how to deliver a satisfying “well, well, well” — so much so that younger audiences might assume he invented its usage. His charisma sparkles as brightly as his sequined ensemble, and his sole physical appearance (he also partially narrates this journey) is filled with magnificent, magical splendor.
Even though prior iterations of this tale — such as “Ever After,” Disney’s TV movie adaptation “Cinderella” and Kenneth Branagh’s live-action “Cinderella” — offered similarly enlightened, forward-thinking commentary, Cannon’s, for better and worse, is far more obtuse about its machinations. And while it’s a noble effort from a capable director, this glass slipper proves frustratingly ill-fitting.

It isn’t surprising to see new adaptations of classic fairy tales. Recently, however, more and more classic stories have been reimagined into brutal horror movies . Now Cinderella is getting the treatment next with the upcoming film Cinderella’s Curse .
Fans of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and other such interpretations will no doubt be excited. As shared via Bloody-Disgusting , producer and director Louisa Warren has an interesting take in store. As they’ve stated themselves:
“This is an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know,” Warren teases. “There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands.”
Warren continues:
“I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.”
Fans won’t have too long to wait to see the film. It’s scheduled to be released as soon as October 2023 by ITN Studios. In addition to being produced and directed by Warren, the film is written by Harry Boxley. The cast for the film includes Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna, and Danielle Scott.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Cinderella’s Curse as we have them. Especially with production on the film set to begin in the UK as soon as next month. For now, it sounds like a very interesting take on the classic story. With so many new horror-centric takes on classic fairy tales these days, it’ll be interesting to see how this Cinderella adaptation will stand out. But if it’s as gory as Warren teases – then that certainly paints a very bloody picture .
As mentioned, there are several similar films in the works. Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is entering production soon, in addition to horror versions of Peter Pan and Bambi . It’s clear that this is a trope that’s here to stay and we’ll be seeing plenty of new iterations in the future.

Horror movies based on public domain properties are pretty hot right now, but it seems a lot of filmmakers are messing around and finding out when wading into these waters. Much the same way Mickey’s Mouse Trap was retitled The Mouse Trap for its VOD release this week, the film formerly titled Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre has a new title for its own release.
Now titled Ouija Castle , the Sleeping Beauty -inspired horror movie is now available on VOD outlets including Prime Video. Yes, Ouija Castle . You can watch the new trailer below.
From the team behind Cinderellaâs Curse comes Ouija Castle , a horror retelling of the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty that was directed by Louisa Warren  ( Cinderellaâs Curse ).
In the film, âThe beautiful Princess Thalia is thrown to ruins after her fatherâs mysterious death. She lives with Prince Edison who she is in love with but can no longer marry since losing her status. Queen Velma wants the kingdom for herself and will use her dark powers, and use of the occult, to take over at any means necessary.
âVelma casts Thaila into a deep sleep to never wake, till one day she does and her web of lies start to fall around her. A violent twist after twist with gory and graphic deaths will ensue.â
Lora Hristova stars in Ouija Castle  as Princess Thalia, along with Benedict Clarke, Sophie Rankin, Charlotte Coleman and  Yvonne Curwen .
Director Louisa Warren had teased a few months back, âThis film will flip everything as you know it on its head. Â It is savage, dark and utterly horrifying . I am setting out to create the most uncomfortable horror experience to date. There will be lies, gore and a big massacre. If you look back at the original material there is so much to play with.â

On a $13 million production budget, Crawl scared up over $91 million worldwide, with sequel talks beginning almost immediately.
What’s the latest on Crawl 2 , you might be wondering? THR reports today that Paramount Pictures is “deep in development” on the sequel, with Aja returning to direct! Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan ( Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension ) are writing.
The Hollywood Reporter notes, “ Crawl 2 will feature a new cast and a new location, in this case the more urban dangers of New York City, according to sources.”
Producers for Crawl 2 will include Aja and Sam Raimi .
In Crawl , produced by Sam Raimi, âWhen a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley ( Kaya Scodelario ) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father ( Barry Pepper ). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears.â

The fantasy genre has been beloved for generations, as escapes into magical worlds create some of the most captivating and enthralling stories. Audiences have also been enraptured by the heart-racing thrills of horror , finding twisted enjoyment in challenging their fears and entering the unknown. Few can challenge the popularity of crime procedurals, with shows like NCIS and Law and Order standing as some of the most enduring series on television. While these three genres seem entirely separate from one another, fans aren't as likely to be so unilateral in what they watch. Most viewers often have to decide whether they'll be tuning in to a Lord of the Rings marathon, a Stephen King feature, or a long-running detective series — but what if someone wants an experience that includes a bit of each? Fans of all these mediums should be excited to discover that there is a show that combines all the best features of these genres into one exciting package . One of the more underrated television series from the mid-2010s, Grimm combines fantasy and horror elements with a classic police procedural format to make for one of the most memorable and unique network television shows ever made. But be warned; much like the fairy tales this series takes inspiration from, there are hard lessons and challenging reflections for those who discover the world of the Wesen.
The grimm protect the balance between the mortals and wesen.
Set in gorgeously woodsy Portland, Oregon, Grimm follows Nick Burkhardt ( David Giuntoli ), a homicide detective whose life becomes far more complicated when he discovers that he is a Grimm, an ancestral line of monster hunters tasked with protecting humans from Wesen , magical creatures that can take the form of humans. As if his day job weren't complicated enough, throughout the series, Nick must manage his career as a homicide detective alongside his newfound responsibilities as a Grimm; a task further complicated by the many gray areas that Wesen inhabits, as they are not always guaranteed to be the bad guys in the story. Though many Wesen (which means "creatures" or "beings" in German) live alongside humans without most people ever knowing, there are those that have more nefarious desires and vicious instincts . Faced with the mercurial challenge of protecting human lives while discerning friend from foe, Nick's most heroic qualities are demanded, lest he fall prey to darkness himself.
As the show's title suggests, the series takes heavy inspiration from the Brothers Grimm, a pair of German authors who chronicled and published countless folklore and stories that have since been entrenched in public knowledge. Fairy tales such as Cinderella , Hansel and Gretel , and Little Red Riding Hood all owe the publication of their stories to the two writers. In homage to these iconic stories, each episode in the series begins with a quote from a fairy tale that corresponds with the type of Wesen featured in the episode, giving a hint to the viewer about what magical creature awaits Nick in the shadows. While these fables have become part of the cultural zeitgeist thanks to their more sanitized Disney adaptations , Grimm takes an approach far more similar to the German writers with some of its more brazen brutality . This stark difference is best exemplified by arguably the Disney Princess herself , Cinderella , whose early folkloric origins involve her step-sisters literally cutting off parts of their feet in attempts to fit into the glass slipper. And when their ruse is uncovered, the step-sisters' cruelty is paid back in like as they are blinded by Cinderella's doves. Even if the message of these fables is ultimately for children, they carry an overarching aura of danger that is lost in their animated adaptations but brought to life in striking detail in Grimm .
The fantasy element of the show is centered around the Wesen. However, when using their powers or experiencing intense emotions, Wesen naturally "woge" back into their supernatural form. This provides two complications for most humans, as only Grimm can see Wesen, and the creature's bodies naturally revert into human form when they pass, maintaining the secrecy of their existence. While some of the computer special effects can look dated at times, the majority of the Wesen fully hold up with modern series, continuing to appear as menacing and unnerving as originally intended . The special effects team used a combination of prosthetics, sculpting, and real fake hair to create the Wesen costumes. The practical costuming is a horror fan's dream, as the sheer variety of different approaches to the monsters are quite creative and notable artistic achievements. One Wesen might have rubbery leather skin, another bristling spines, and another might still be swaddled in fur. The Wesen have a tactile feel to their design, which keeps the series grounded in live-action but makes the creatures feel even scarier. Even more impressively, they designed and built these costumes each within a few days, outpacing other production teams to keep up with the number of Wesen needed for such an expansive series.
The majority of Wesen in the series are based on European folklore, most of which are inspired by the creatures in Grimms' Fairy Tales , such as the Blutbaden , based on the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood . However, in the canon of the show, however, it's the Wesen that inspired the Brothers Grimm, the inverse of our own reality. Amusingly, the Grimm siblings weren't monster hunters themselves, but they nonetheless compiled stories that they had learned about these creatures with such effectiveness that they still became the namesake of Nick's ancestral line. Though most of the Wesen are inspired by European stories, they are not exclusive to that part of the world. Several other Wesen are inspired by mythical creatures from around the globe , such as the Aswang , a terrifying blood-sucking creature from the Philippines, or the Anubis , a powerful jackal creature based on Egyptian mythology.
While the folklore origins of these creatures represent the fantasy element of the show, they are also the reason that the show is as terrifying as any other horror on TV. The Wesen are creepy, full stop. The designs of the Wesen are dark and twisted imaginings of their origins , with appearances that range from furry to scaly to leathery, all serving to make a myriad of creepy and terrifying creatures. Even the "cutest" Wesens have a degree of uncanny otherworldliness that makes them unnerving to look at. However, despite most of their nightmare-inducing appearances, the series goes to great lengths to emphasize that not all Wesen are cold-hearted, murderous creatures . The Wesen adhere to rules set by a council and can otherwise coexist alongside humans. The Grimms' responsibilities aren't actually to exterminate all Wesen, but rather to protect the balance with humanity and keep people safe from the violent exceptions.
Looking for a streaming scream? You've come to the right place.
By combining elements from both fantasy and horror, Grimm became an incredibly successful, albeit underrated, television series from the mid-2010s. Grimm ran for 6 seasons and had over 100 episodes , developing a catalog of Wesen that is as extensive as it is terrifying. One of the ways it accomplished such a feat was through its framing as a detective drama. Nick's career as a homicide detective isn't just a simple day job that he waves away, but an integral part of his character and one of the main pathways he uses to protect people from violent Wesen. Paired with his partner Hank ( Russell Hornsby ), Nick bridges the gap between a traditional cop procedural with eerie fantasy folklore. But the world of Grimm doesn't just stick to a "monster of the week" format , however, with new factions and a plethora of new characters expanding the scale of the series to a far greater degree than its earliest episodes. Nick becomes fully immersed in the world of the Wesen; one that spans the entire globe. Though the series is still mostly set in the Pacific Northwest, there are plenty of international visitors that make the Wesen's world feel truly expansive and ancient.
While much of the show's success can be credited to its appeal to fans of multiple genres, the heart of the series is Nick and his relationship with the Wesen. Though Grimms are feared by the Wesen, Nick is unique among the lineage of monster hunters because he develops genuine, positive relationships with many of the creatures. Nick's goal isn't to exterminate all the Wesen, but rather ensure that they can coexist with humans. He's far more like the Avatar from Avatar: The Last Airbender than a traditional monster slayer. One of Nick's earliest allies is a Wesen, who remains one of his most steadfast friends and even asks him to be the best man at his wedding. The nuance and variety of these creatures extend beyond their mythical inspirations , and the willingness of the main character to speak with them adds another layer of things to like about this series. It's human nature to be fearful of the unknown, but Nick's camaraderie with the Wesen reminds viewers not to be trapped behind such limiting preconceptions. It's also human nature to learn, grow, and connect, all of which Nick experiences alongside the Wesen as he becomes their protector.
Some of the computer special effects of the Wesen may initially appear dated, but Grimm’s most terrifying horror aspects aren’t compromised at all. The series doesn't have the most audacious amounts of gore, but it makes up for the quantity of blood with just how viscerally scary each creature is portrayed. All the Wesen are humanoid creatures which, admittedly, could be because of production costs, but it also creates a familiarity with audiences that proves to be unnerving rather than comforting. The eerie, uncanny valley nature of the Wesens' designs not only creates more of an overarching unease for viewers but also helps give Grimm a recognizable atmosphere that separates it from other shows . The Wesen come with various terrifying traits, each seemingly plucked from a person's nightmare, ensuring that even the most daring horror aficionados will have something to fear.
The combination of supernatural Wesen horror and homicide crime drama makes the show uniquely scarier than each individual genre . A kidnapping or a murder is already inherently terrifying for audiences to watch, but mixing in the supernatural makes it a multi-faceted experience. There are plenty of creatures reminiscent of traditional monsters like werewolves and vampires, but the series is daring enough to go further than any other network television show. Take, for example, the Aswang, one of the Wesen based on an Asian folkloric creature. The Filipino myth recounts that the creature not only enjoys the taste of blood but has a gut-wrenching preference for the fetuses in pregnant women. It's one of the most blood-curdling monster myths in existence, establishing the caliber of horror Grimm is willing to inhabit. If your standard visceral murder isn’t scary enough, then Grimm’s supernatural gore is the next escalation of television horror. Whether you're a fan of horror, fantasy, or a classic detective show, viewers are sure to find something to love about Grimm .
