Weather and seasons • 1st graders • Science, Language Arts • LA-Interactions within Habitats • ELA- Key Ideas • Students will learn the seasons and weather that comes along with them. At the end of the lesson there will be a review worksheet to see what information the students learned.

Weather • The state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc. • The main types of weather we will discuss; rain, snow, sunny, cloudy, and cold

Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnGKfOX5bVQ

Summer • The warmest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere summer last from June to August • In the summer its very hot • We also don’t have school in the summer, we have summer break instead • Summer is where we have hot humid days next

Things we do in summer • Ride our bikes • Go swimming • Go get ice cream • Set up lemonade stands • Go to the park • Have garage sales

What to wear in summer?

Autumn • The third season of the year, when crops and fruits are gathered and leaves fall, in the northern hemisphere fall last from September to November • We also call autumn, fall. Autumn is when we have warm days, not too cold not too hot

Autumn holidays • Labor Day • Grandparents Day • Patriot Day • Equinox • Columbus Day  • Halloween • Daylight Savings Time Ends  • Election Day • Veterans Day • Remembrance Day  • Thanksgiving

Winter • The coldest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere it last from December to February  • During winter is when the snow starts.

Things to do in winter • Sit around fire place • Play in the snow • Drink hot coco • Go sledding

Winter animals

What animals do in winter • Hibernate-Hibernation is like a very deep sleep. Animals hide away in a den or burrow. Their body temperature and heart rate slow down. This helps them to save their energy. Hibernating animals wake up in spring when the weather is nicer and there is more food around. • Migrate- That's what migrating animals do. When the weather starts to get cold migrating animals fly or swim to a warmer place where they can find food. • Adapt-Animals that adapt to the cold weather often change their appearance. They grow warmer fur or feathers and sometimes change color. Some animals change color to camouflage themselves against the snow. These animals can find food in winter, even though there isn't much food around.

What to wear in winter?

Spring • The season after winter and before summer, in which vegetation begins to appear, in the northern hemisphere spring goes from March to May • Spring is the season that we have rainy days and beautiful flowers

Things to do in spring • Plant flowers • Play in the rain • Play outside

NEW YORK — Juan Soto stood at the top step of the dugout with a bat in his hand in the seventh inning of 0-0 Yankees -Dodgers’ game with the Dodgers Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees right fielder played through some forearm discomfort for more than a week, and now that he knew his injury was something minor, with an MRI just showing some inflammation, he wanted an at-bat.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – FOX Weather hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross joined an elite panel of storm and emergency management experts Wednesday to help Floridians prepare for what’s expected to be an active hurricane season.

The goal was to ensure the safety of others so that decisions made in the face of an impending hurricane are not overwhelming.

While the current hurricane season has had the slowest start in a decade , FOX Weather data shows it is more in line with historical patterns. Despite the quiet start, experts anticipate a very active hurricane season reaching its peak this summer, extending through Nov. 30.

NOAA's forecast indicates an above-average season with 17-25 named storms, 8-13 hurricanes and 4-7 major hurricanes . Most other forecasters have been in general agreement.

Why is there so much pollen right now in Massachusetts?

By Terry Eliasen, Exec. Weather Producer

Updated on: June 4, 2024 / 4:11 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - Welcome to pine pollen season!  The CBS Boston First Alert weather team has been fielding lots of questions over the last several days regarding the nasty yellow-green slime that is now coating everything from cars to patios across Massachusetts.

Two different pollen peaks

This is not anything new or unusual. In fact, this same thing happens every year in late May and early June.

Different pollens peak at different times of the year, and some are more noticeable than others to the naked eye and to the lungs. Currently, we are at the intersection of two different pollen "peaks." These include tree pollens like oak, mulberry, and pine, as well as grass pollen.

These will last another week or two, and then we will get a brief respite before ragweed season begins in late July and August.

2023-pollen-seasons.png

Most people are not allergic to pine

What's interesting is that many allergy reports do not even mention pine in their list of current allergens. While pine may be one of the most messy and visible pollens, most people are not allergic to it.

2023-pollen-pm.png

Many doctors believe that the main reason for this is the size of the average pine pollen grains. At 60-to-100 microns, pine pollen is thought to be too large to enter the nasal passages and lungs of most allergy sufferers.

That doesn't necessarily mean that inhaling large quantities of it won't affect your breathing or perhaps leave you choking. However, an actual allergic reaction from pine is somewhat rare.

2023-pollen-grain-size.png

When will the pollen stop?

Given the dry forecast for the next few days, you will continue to see clouds of yellow drifting from the pine trees and getting all over everything.

Thankfully, some heavy rainfall on Thursday  will wash a good deal of the yellow slime down the storm drains, signaling the beginning of the end of the "pine-slime" season in Massachusetts.

Accurate forecasts, finally? —

No physics no problem. ai weather forecasting is already making huge strides., new model that predicts global weather can run on a single desktop computer..

Eric Berger - Jun 3, 2024 11:00 am UTC

AI weather models are arriving just in time for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Much like the invigorating passage of a strong cold front, major changes are afoot in the weather forecasting community. And the end game is nothing short of revolutionary: an entirely new way to forecast weather based on artificial intelligence that can run on a desktop computer.

Today's artificial intelligence systems require one resource more than any other to operate—data. For example, large language models such as ChatGPT voraciously consume data to improve answers to queries. The more and higher quality data, the better their training, and the sharper the results.

However, there is a finite limit to quality data, even on the Internet. These large language models have hoovered up so much data that they're being sued widely for copyright infringement . And as they're running out of data, the operators of these AI models are turning to ideas such as synthetic data to keep feeding the beast and produce ever more capable results for users.

If data is king, what about other applications for AI technology similar to large language models? Are there untapped pools of data? One of the most promising that has emerged in the last 18 months is weather forecasting, and recent advances have sent shockwaves through the field of meteorology.

That's because there's a secret weapon: an extremely rich data set. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the premiere organization in the world for numerical weather prediction, maintains a set of data about atmospheric, land, and oceanic weather data for every day, at points around the world, every few hours, going back to 1940. The last 50 years of data, after the advent of global satellite coverage, is especially rich. This dataset is known as ERA5 , and it is publicly available.

It was not created to fuel AI applications, but ERA5 has turned out to be incredibly useful for this purpose. Computer scientists only really got serious about using this data to train AI models to forecast the weather in 2022. Since then, the technology has made rapid strides. In some cases, the output of these models is already superior to global weather models that scientists have labored decades to design and build, and they require some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world to run.

"It is clear that machine learning is a significant part of the future of weather forecasting," said Matthew Chantry, who leads AI forecasting efforts at the European weather center known as ECMWF, in an interview with Ars.

It’s moving fast

John Dean and Kai Marshland met as undergraduates at Stanford University in the late 2010s. Dean, an electrical engineer, interned at SpaceX during the summer of 2017. Marshland, a computer scientist, interned at the launch company the next summer. Both graduated in 2019 and were trying to figure out what to do with their lives.

"We decided we wanted to solve the problem of weather uncertainty," Marshland said, so they co-founded a company called WindBorne Systems.

The premise of the company was simple: For about 85 percent of the Earth and its atmosphere, we have no good data about weather conditions there. A lack of quality data, which establishes initial conditions, represents a major handicap for global weather forecast models. The company's proposed solution was in its name—wind borne.

Dean and Marshland set about designing small weather balloons they could release into the atmosphere and which would fly around the world for up to 40 days, relaying useful atmospheric data that could be packaged and sold to large, government-funded weather models.

Weather balloons provide invaluable data about atmospheric conditions—readings such as temperature, dewpoints, and pressures—that cannot be captured by surface observations or satellites. Such atmospheric "profiles" are helpful in setting the initial conditions models start with. The problem is that traditional weather balloons are cumbersome and only operate for a few hours. Because of this, the National Weather Service only launches them twice daily from about 100 locations in the United States.

Hurricane season 2024: How to avoid scams before and after a weather emergency

Facebook

Weather forecasters are predicting an active hurricane season, but if you live in large parts of the country — including those hit by tornadoes over Memorial Day Weekend — you’ve probably noticed more active storms of all types. To get started preparing for hurricane season or any storm, while avoiding scams, check  ftc.gov/WeatherEmergencies for new information to help you spot, avoid, and report scams as you prepare for, deal with, and recover from extreme weather and natural disasters.

Like all the FTC’s free resources, the site is mobile-friendly — giving you ready access to information when and where you need it. When it comes to planning for a possible weather emergency, the more you know — and the earlier you know it — the better prepared you’ll be to avoid weather-related scams and frauds.

To stay ahead of weather-related scammers, here are steps you can take now.

  • Update your insurance policy . To avoid surprises later, check to make sure your insurance policy is current and find out what is covered — and what isn’t.
  • Check out contractors before you need one.  Ask people you know and trust for recommendations. Then search online for the company’s name with words like “scam” or “complaint.”
  • Research online sellers before you buy.  Unusually low prices are a sign of a scam. If you see an ad for what seems like a familiar company but you’re not sure the ad is real, check it out. But go to the company’s website using a page you know is real — not the link in the ad.

In reply to We received email from… by M. Doolittle

Report fraud, scams, and bad business practices to the FTC website www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov . You can copy the email message you got and add it to your report.

Does PayPal have your credit or bank information on file where someone could charge on it? I get these fake invoices a lot, but since PayPal has no way to charge me for anything, I ignore them. but you were right to send this to the FTC. They need to know.
