The importance, purpose and benefit of a business plan is in that it enables you to validate a business idea, secure funding, set strategic goals – and then take organized action on those goals by making decisions, managing resources, risk and change, while effectively communicating with stakeholders.

Let’s take a closer look at how each of the important business planning benefits can catapult your business forward:

1. Validate Your Business Idea

The process of writing your business plan will force you to ask the difficult questions about the major components of your business, including:

  • External: industry, target market of prospective customers, competitive landscape

Too many people don't bother to write a business plan because they think it's too hard or unnecessary unless you're looking for funding . That's a shame. These myths keep a lot of people from the benefits of planning.

If you're still skeptical, here are 10 benefits to business planning you shouldn't be overlooking:

  • You'll stay on strategy. It's hard to stick to strategy through the daily routine and interruptions. Use a business plan to summarize the main points of your strategy and as a reminder of what it both includes and rules out.
  • Business objectives will be clear. Use your plan to define and manage specific measurable objectives like web visitors, sales, margins or new product launches. Define success in objective terms.
  • Your educated guesses will be better. Use your plan to refine your educated guesses about things like potential market, sales, costs of sales, sales drivers, lead processing and business processes.
  • Priorities will make more sense. Aside from the strategy, there are also priorities for other factors of your business like growth, management and financial health. Use your plan to set a foundation for these, then to revise as the business evolves.
  • You'll understand interdependencies. Use a plan to keep track of what needs to happen and in what order. For example, if you have to time a product release to match a testing schedule or marketing to match a release, your business plan can be invaluable in keeping you organized and on track.
  • Milestones will keep you on track. Use a business plan to keep track of dates and deadlines in one place. This is valuable even for the one-person business and vital for teams.
  • You'll be better at delegating. The business plan is an ideal place to clarify who is responsible for what. Every important task should have one person in charge. Your plan keeps track.
  • Managing team members and tracking results will be easy. So many people acknowledge the need for regular team member reviews and just as many admit they hate the reviews. The plan is a great format for getting things in writing and following up on the difference between expectations and results with course corrections.
  • You can better plan and manage cash flow. No business can afford to mismanage cash. And simple profits are rarely the same as cash. A cash flow plan is a great way to tie together educated guesses on sales, costs, expenses, assets you need to buy and debts you have to pay.
  • Course corrections will keep your business from flopping. Having a business plan gives you a way to be proactive -- not reactive -- about business. Don't wait for things to happen. Plan them. Follow up by tracking the results and making course corrections. It's a myth that a business plan is supposed to predict the future. Instead, it sets expectations and establishes assumptions so you can manage the future with course corrections.

You don't need a big formal business plan to reap these benefits. Instead, think of your business plan as a collection of lists, bullet points and tables. Think of it as something that lives on the computer, not on paper. It's just big enough to do its job.

Every business has different worries, from inflation to customer growth to succession. But nearly all businesses share two top concerns: retaining both existing employees and key employees. That’s according to April 2024 Principal ® research of small and midsize businesses.

While you may fret about employees leaving, your workforce may think about why they want to stay, and it turns out benefits (or lack thereof) make a big impact. Three out of four employees want their employers to add benefits within the year, according to the Principal survey. If those workers go looking for a job, they may find competitors that offer the benefits they feel are lacking.

One thing that can help you gain an edge in recruitment and retention: Create (and share) with employees your plans for extending or enhancing benefits. Here’s how to use your benefit plan to help keep up with employee needs and business growth goals—and stay one step ahead of your competitors.

Step 1: Establish a benefits philosophy.

A benefits philosophy typically has three prongs:

  • How do your benefits protect your employees?
  • How do your benefits protect your business?
  • How do your benefits protect yourself and your family?

The three prongs are interdependent and affect one another. For example, benefits you use as an edge to attract the best talent (protect your employees) also serve to encourage growth (protect your business).

Step 2: Compare coverage with your peers.

Competition is more expansive than it used to be. “You're not only competing in [your] business; you're competing with other small businesses in different industries,” says Rusty Rohe, owner, Dahl Air Conditioning and Heating in Van Meter, Iowa. “Benefits are a big deal to people.”

If you’re unsure how to compare coverage based on your business’s size, industry, and region, two options can help: the insights from a financial professional, or the Principal ® Benefit Design Tool , with a downloadable report that compares relative levels of coverage for dental, life, and disability insurance as well as retirement plans.

Step 3: Listen to and learn from employees.

Listening can be both formal and informal; the smaller your business, the more you can rely on everyday conversations. Even so, more structured opportunities—during annual reviews, for example—can help you glean employee sentiment and expectations around benefits. You might also see trends in exit interviews: Are people leaving because of a benefit you don’t offer? If you need the honesty of anonymous feedback, survey tools including SurveyMonkey, Google Forms , and Typeform can help.

PlanOmatic, a rental real estate design company in Denver, surveys employees once a month, with a benefits and retirement survey every six months. “People's lives change a lot. There's a lot of flexibility that goes into benefits, a lot of flexibility that goes into retirement plans,” says Kennedy Watson in human resources. “We listen and incorporate that feedback into our conversations internally.”

Step 4: Calculate the true benefit costs.

It’s easy to overestimate the cost of adding benefits. Nate Schelhaas, senior vice president with Principal, has found that many employee benefit costs are less expensive than decision-makers realize. “Because they use health insurance as a point of reference, they assume everything else is expensive, too, and assume they can’t do anything,” he says.

But there are often ways to add benefits, monitor costs, and meet employee needs. For example, most traditional benefit costs such as healthcare tend to be largely covered by employers. Now let’s say there’s a potential benefit your employees want, but it’s outside your benefits budget. Maybe all your employees really need is easier access to buy that benefit as part of your workplace benefit plan. The cost to you may be all, some, or none.

Step 5: Balance cost with long-term benefits for employees, the business, and you.

For your long-term goals, some hardworking benefits offer a more concrete way to plan for next steps. Take key employee benefits: Nearly every employer ranks worries about retaining key employees as a top concern, according to Principal research. To create a robust key employee benefits retention plan, you have to balance the investment in benefits such as non-qualified deferred compensation or bonuses with what it would cost you—today and in the future—should you lose the talents of that person.

Step 6: Prioritize extended or enhanced benefits.

Your master benefit plan can outline the future in broad strokes—what you’d like to add or boost based on timing, budgets, wants, and needs. Complement that with details about what’s next—something you’re going to add this year, for example—to level-set expectations. And think about what you need to grow your business—perhaps a focus on key employee benefits first.

Step 7: Continuously adapt your benefits.

Year over year, your business, workforce, and customers change—and you change with them. Today’s multi-generational workforce has diverse needs and wants —and if you’re able to accommodate some of those asks, you may be able to improve your employee retention. Trump wants to cut Social Security taxes for seniors. It's not as good as it sounds.

Former President Donald Trump said that if he's elected, he'd cut taxes on Social Security benefits for older Americans — but the policy risks shrinking those funds sooner than expected.

In a Wednesday interview on " Fox & Friends ," the Republican presidential nominee said he plans to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, which apply to all individuals with a household income above $25,000. This group pays income tax on 50% of their benefits, and people with a higher income are often taxed more.

"We can do a lot of things to help the people," Trump said during the interview. "People on Social Security are being killed, and one of the things I'm doing is no tax for seniors on Social Security, and I'll get it done quickly."

Trump had previously pitched his plan to eliminate taxes on Social Security, writing on his social-media platform Truth Social on July 31: "SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY!"

Some experts have criticized the plan. Garrett Watson, a senior policy analyst at The Tax Foundation, published a blog on August 2 calling the proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits "unsound and fiscally irresponsible," arguing that doing so would increase the deficit by about $1.6 trillion over 10 years and cause the Social Security and Medicare trust funds to dry up more quickly.

According to the latest Social Security and Medicare Trustees report, the program will be able to pay out full benefits for 11 more years , after which they will shrink if Congress doesn't act to increase funding. The average monthly Social Security check in 2024 is about $1,780, and many baby boomers rely on Medicare as their only source of health insurance.

Business Insider has talked to several boomers without retirement savings , many of whom are falling behind on bills or forgoing retirement entirely. According to the Census Bureau's Population Survey, over half of older adults in the US have an annual income of  $30,000 or less .

While tax breaks might help in the short term, boomers are scared their Social Security benefits could be significantly cut in the next decade. With Trump's proposed policy, it's a risk.

"It scares us to death because we'll still be here, God-willing," a boomer in Illinois previously told BI. "How are we to survive?"

Trump has vowed not to cut Social Security

Trump has previously taken a strong position on Social Security — one at odds with many members of his own party who have faced criticism from Democrats for calling for Social Security cuts. For example, Trump said in January 2023 that "under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security."

"Cut waste, fraud and abuse everywhere that we can find it and there is plenty, there's plenty of it," he said in a video message. "But do not cut the benefits our seniors worked for and paid for their entire lives. Save Social Security, don't destroy it."

Trump's platform, which was adopted by the Republican National Committee, vowed to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits while ensuring there would be no cuts or changes to the retirement age. Older adults can start collecting Social Security at age 62 right now, and the official retirement age is typically 67, though it varies slightly by birth year.

Even with Trump's pledge to protect retirees' benefits, Democratic lawmakers have continued to criticize the GOP and some of their proposals to change the program by raising the retirement age.

"As long as I am President, I will keep strengthening Social Security and Medicare and protecting them from Republicans' attempts to cut benefits Americans have earned," Biden said in a May statement .

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has not yet released a policy outline on Social Security, but she's expected to continue Biden's work to expand Social Security benefits and to protect Medicare and the Affordable Care Act .

As businesses across the country continue to assess the impacts they have on the environment and society around them, corporate social responsibility in healthcare is likewise becoming prominent.

Indeed, corporate social responsibility ( CSR ) is not a concept unique to healthcare. Rather, it can apply to all businesses and corporations, and since most hospitals and health systems are corporations, it applies to healthcare, too.

As more business sectors embrace principles of ethics and CSR, so too are healthcare organizations. Those trends, plus obligations for claiming tax-exempt nonprofit status and pushes for more social determinants of health (SDOH) work, are pushing more hospitals and health systems to assess their CSR strategies.

Defining corporate social responsibility in healthcare

According to the Harvard Business School, corporate social responsibility is "the idea that a business has a responsibility to the society that exists around it."

IBM says that corporate social responsibility means companies prioritize not just profit but also the impact they have on the environment and society around them.

"Through CSR, companies make decisions driven by financial gain and profitability, and the impact of their actions on their communities and the world at large," IBM says on its website . "CSR goes beyond legal obligations: by voluntarily adopting ethical, sustainable and responsible business practices, companies seek to deliver benefits to consumers, shareholders, employees and society."

Like other industries, many healthcare organizations have embraced their social responsibility. According to Charity Miles, an organization that facilitates corporate walks and runs for charitable causes, healthcare social responsibility is closely linked to SDOH.

"Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in healthcare involves healthcare organizations ethically contributing to community health and well-being through sustainable practices, enhanced healthcare access, and initiatives tackling social health determinants like poverty and education to better health outcomes," Charity Miles says .

According to the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), which counts CSR among its chief commitments, social responsibility can be exemplified in six pillars:

  • Responsible advocacy.
  • Environmental and economic stability.
  • Public protection through ethical practices, self-regulation and support of human rights.
  • Philanthropy and community service.
  • Socially responsible leadership.

The benefits of CSR are manifold. Of course, CSR can support the community a hospital or health system serves, but most experts agree the practice can also support the healthcare organization itself.

Hospitals and health systems that practice CSR might improve their public image, boosting consumer trust and patient loyalty . On the flip side, they might also help close health disparities by supporting SDOH.

Notably, CSR is voluntary for nearly every corporation, including hospitals and health systems. However, for hospitals and health systems with nonprofit and tax-exempt status, CSR might seem like a de facto requirement.

Corporate social responsibility and nonprofit status

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) hospitals receive tax-exempt status from the IRS in exchange for practices related to charity care and social responsibility. Those requirements, mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), include the following:

  • Completion of a community health needs assessment.
  • Operating an emergency department open to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.
  • Financial assistance policy.
  • Limitations on charges for individuals who qualify.
  • Compliance with certain billing and collections policies.

To be clear, the IRS does not mandate CSR for nonprofit hospitals. However, the community benefits that nonprofit hospitals do have to provide, which can include charity care and other charitable programs to benefit the community, often align with a strong CSR strategy.

In essence, nonprofit hospitals are required to design their operations to support the communities they serve rather than funneling all profits to shareholders. This means operating under a CSR structure.

However, murky requirements make it difficult to measure a hospital or health system's social responsibility. There is no minimum amount nonprofit hospitals need to spend on community benefits, meaning some hospitals spend as little as $.01 on the dollar in community benefits, according to one 2018 Health Affairs study .

Oversight might also be lacking. A 2020 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report showed as many as 30 hospitals did not spend anything on community benefits.

This has led to some discrepancies regarding how much nonprofit hospitals and health systems put toward community services and whether that is enough.

According to a 2023 American Hospital Association (AHA) report, nonprofit hospitals gave more than $20 billion in community benefits in 2020, accounting for 15.5% of total expenses.

That conflicts with a 2024 report from the Lown Institute showing that nonprofit hospitals spent 3.87% of their budgets on community benefits , making the tax breaks they see as 501(c)(3) organizations exceed their total community benefit spend.

There is little evidence explaining the discrepancy between community benefit and social responsibility giving. Factors like variable definitions and standards, accounting practices, reporting requirements and data sources could be at play.

Regardless, nonprofit hospitals and health systems looking to improve their community benefit practices or public image and patient loyalty might turn to common CST practices.

Examples of CSR in healthcare

There is no one-size-fits-all approach for CSR in healthcare. Social responsibility in one community might look different than it does in another.

For example, a hospital prioritizing CSR in a community with many food deserts might invest in food delivery modalities and fund community food banks or farmer's markets.

Meanwhile, a different health system's CSR might manifest as financially backing affordable housing complexes because it treats a larger unhoused population .

CSR does not need to be informed by community needs assessments, but it does help to know what types of resources would support the community a hospital serves. From there, health systems can assess their own resources and community partnerships to identify high-yield intervention areas.

Some leading examples of CSR in healthcare include the following:

  • Mobile health clinics to support free or subsidized patient care access.
  • Workforce development.
  • Environmental conservation.
  • Donating of medical supplies.
  • Investments in affordable housing.
  • Social determinants of health interventions.

As noted above, CSR work can be closely linked to a nonprofit hospital's community benefits. Offering charity care is considered CSR work, as is reviewing financial assistance programs.

Practicing CSR is part of a key cultural shift focusing on social responsibility and business ethics. As key anchor institutions, healthcare organizations might consider different CSR strategies as they work not just to improve the health of communities but also their own public image and consumer loyalty.

First it was a tax cut for hotel and restaurant workers in Nevada, a swing state where Donald J. Trump proposed exempting tips from taxes . Then, in front of powerful chief executives gathered in Washington, Mr. Trump floated cutting the corporate tax rate , helping to ease concerns in the business community about his candidacy.

Now Mr. Trump is calling for an end to taxing Social Security benefits, which could be a boon for retirees, one of the most politically important groups in the United States.

Repeatedly during the campaign, Mr. Trump and Republicans have embraced new, sometimes novel tax cuts in an attempt to shore up support with major constituencies. In a series of social-media posts, at political rallies, and without formal policy proposals, Mr. Trump has casually suggested reducing federal revenue by trillions of dollars.

While policy experts have taken issue with the ideas, Mr. Trump’s pronouncements have real political appeal, at times putting Democrats on their back foot. Nevada’s two Democratic senators and its powerful culinary union have endorsed ending taxes on tips. The AARP supports tax relief for seniors receiving Social Security benefits, though it has not taken a position on Mr. Trump’s proposal.

“You do have to scratch your head a little bit when someone’s going around offering free lunches everywhere,” said Jesse Lee, a Democratic consultant and former Biden White House official. “We’re all for people having their lunch, but we have to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for it.”

The most recent and most expensive of Mr. Trump’s plans is ending income taxes on Social Security benefits, which could cost the federal government as much as $1.8 trillion in revenue over a decade, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. That would burn through the program’s financial reserves more quickly and hasten the moment when the government is no longer able to pay out Social Security benefits in full under current law.
