Unit 1 – Poetry The Castle

I. Choose the correct answer for the following sentences.

1. How did the soldiers spend the summer days?

(a) relaxing (b) full of worries c) with fear

2. What was challenging?

a) the enemy b) height of the castle c) the captain

3. What happened to the castle?

a) captured b) destroyed in fire c) locked

4. What does „friendly allies‟ mean?

a) friends who help b) supporting nations c) friends who advice

5. What could the soldiers watch from the turret wall?

a) mountains b) rivers c) mowers

II. Answer the following questions in one or two lines.

1. Who is the narrator in the poem? How long had the soldiers been in the castle?

•  A soldier is a narrator in the poem.
• All through the summer, the soldiers had been in The Castle.

2. Why were the secret galleries bare?

• The secret galleries were looted by the cunning enemies. So, they were bare.

3. Explain the phrase „load on load‟ in the line “with our arms and provender load on load”

III. Answer the following questions in three or four lines.

1. How the soldiers and what were was their firm belief?

2. What is a wicket gate and why was the gate wicked?

3. How did the enemies enter the castle? Who did the wicked thing?

• The disloyal warder, who guards the wicket gate, let the enemies inside the famous citadel for gold.
• Thus the enemies entered The Castle.

IV. Write in detail

1. How safe was the castle? How was it conquered?

Introduction:

The poet Edwin Muir beautifully brings out the strength of The Castle.

Safety of The Castle:

The soldiers did not worry about threats around them because The Castle gates were strong and walls were high, thick, and smooth. They felt very safe because they had more confidence towards The Castle. They trusted a lot that even by a trick no one could enter The Castle. The human beings did not have the courage to enter The Castle but birds could enter. So the soldiers were in a relaxed manner and stress-free about everything around them.

The belief of the soldiers:

They believed that The Castle was absolutely safe and because of its physical strength and their captain was brave and the soldiers were loyal.

Disloyal warder:

The strong castle became helpless and thin. The soldiers unexpectedly faced failure because of the greedy disloyal warder. The famous citadel was captured by the enemies for disloyalty (gold). The black sheep was one of their own men (warder) who let the enemies inside the citadel that had been known for its secret gallery and intricate path.

Conclusion:

Once, The Castle was safe because soldiers were united and loyal and their captain was brave. But later disloyalty arose from their own men warder, The Castle was conquered by the enemies.

Greedy kills humanity.

Human greed led to the mighty fall of the citadel. Explain.

Greed means a selfish or excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, especially of money, wealth, food, or other possession. One who is greedy follows the path of unfair means, betrayal, and crime. This makes other’s life miserable. “Greed’ can also mean helping an enemy, such a person who gives secret information to an enemy country. That brings the mighty fall of the kingdom.

Here, In the poem ‘The Castle’, a greedy warder was the main cause and culprit who brought failure to his own men. Before that, the soldiers were stress-free and relaxed. They have plenty of arms and food. The Castle gates were strong and walls were high, thick, and smooth. They believed that The Castle was absolutely safe because their captain was brave and the soldiers were loyal.

Yet these men were defeated when the enemy entered to their own man (warder) who let the enemy soldiers through a little gate. At first, The Castle was safe because soldiers were the united castle and loyal and their captain was brave. But later, The Castle became weak and thin. As disloyalty arose from their own men, warder, The Castle was conquered by the enemies.

‘Greed kills humanity’. Thus human greed led to the mighty fall of the citadel.

(Reading) Read the passage given below:

1. What's the one thing that you associate with your college days ? For me, it was consuming copious amounts of chai. A cup of tea was a panacea to all troubles and the companion to all joys. In this exclusive interview, we caught up with 65-year-old Deepak Garg owner of Ganga Dhaba, a spot that every officer from National Academy of

Administration has visited multiple times.

2. Deepak begins, "My family has been here for almost 90 years. It was my grandfather who first started working here as the supplier to the hotel that existed then. "In 1964, when Deepak was all of eight, he lost his father and the responsibility of raising four children fell on his mother.

3. "Our growing up years were a huge struggle. My mother used to teach home science at a local Balwadi school, and which was also where my siblings and I studied," he says. In 1978, Deepak says that he started food joint that he named Om Chinese restaurant. "In those days, there was a huge liking for Chinese food and hence the name and the choice of cuisine," he says.

4. For almost 17 years, things continued and then Deepak got a Public Call Office (PCO) installed for the Officer Trainees. The business did so well that soon he had installed more than ten telephones, with separate cabins, to allow them some privacy while they made and received their calls.

5. "The OTs who would talk on the PCO from here would always refer to the place as "Ganga Dhaba'. It was because this place is so close to the Ganga hostel inside the academy, that slowly the name changed and it became Ganga Dhaba. Since it was the OTs that gave us our identity, we decided to change the name and call it Ganga Dhaba," he says.

6. There have been instances when Deepak and his family members have learnt dishes from the OTs. He says, "So many dishes on our menu today are because some officer came in and decided to teach us how to make them."

7. We have seen two generations of officers, served the parents, who now as the parents come back to drop their children at the academy and tell us to take care of them. What more can we ask for? While the money we make is not great, the respect and the love we have accumulated over the years is what keeps us going." says Deepak, proudly, (400 words)

II. Read the passage given below: 1. Air pollution is a major threat to human health. The United Nations Environment Programme has estimated that, globally, 1.1 billion people breathe in unhealthy air. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that urban air pollution is responsible for approximately 800,000 deaths and 4.6 million people lose their lives every year around the globe.  2. Traffic and transportation problems, inadequate drainage facilities, lack of open spaces, carbon emission, and the accumulation of waste aggravate the problem. Air pollution is associated with increased risk of Acute respiratory infections (ARI), the principal cause of infant and child mortality in developing countries. 3. Urban air quality in most mega cities has been found to be critical and Kolkata is no exception to this. An analysis of ambient air quality in Kolkata was done by applying the Exceedance Factor (EF) method, where the presence of listed pollutants' (RPM, SPM, NO, and SO2) annual average concentration are classified into four different categories; namely critical, high, moderate, and low pollution. Out of a total of 17 ambient air quality monitoring stations operating in Kolkata, five fall under the critical category, and the remaining 12 locations fall under the high category of NO2 concentration, while for RPM, four record critical, and 13 come under the high pollution category. The causes of high concentration of pollutants in the form of NO, and RPM have been identified in earlier studies as vehicular emission (51.4%), followed by industrial sources (24.5%) and dust particles (21.1%).

4. Later, a health assessment was undertaken with a structured questionnaire at some nearby dispensaries which fall under areas with different ambient air pollution levels. Three dispensaries have been surveyed with 100 participants. It shows that respondents with respiratory diseases (85.1%) have outnumbered waterborne diseases (14.9%) and include acute respiratory infections. (ARI) (60%), chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) (7.8%), upper tract respiratory infection (UTRD) (1.2%), Influenza (12.7%), and acid-fast bacillus (AFB) (3.4%). 

5. To live a healthy life and have better well-being, practising pollution averting activities in one's day-to-day activities is needed. These pollution averting practices can only be possible when awareness among the masses is generated that the air they breathe outdoors is not found to be safe. Pollution in India

12th English - Public Exam 2022 - Original Question Papers & Answer Keys Download

Tamilnadu School Education Department conducts revision test every year for 10th, 11th, and 12th standard. But this year first revision test is conducted for only 10th, 11th and 12th standards. Official Second revision test is conducted for only 10th and 12th standards. As per official proceedings, 11th 2nd revision and 10th, 12th standards 3rd revision test will be conducted by district level or school level only. Tamilnadu school education department announced that this revision test will be conducted like public exam with proper seating arrangements and exam hours. The valuation of the revision test papers also like shuffled between the schools and the marks will be uploaded in the EMIS website. There is an expectation that if the covid situation became severe, and there is possibility of conducting public exam, then this revision exam marks will be announced as public marks. It is an assumption only. So all students must study for this exam carefully. Everyday after exam hour our website will provide answer keys for this official original question papers.

English (302), solved question paper-i , (theory exam), time : 3 hours , marks : 100.

1. Read the following extracts carefully and answer the questions that follow: (a) Right from the beginning, I wanted to become a batsman and I hated fosing my wicket. This became such an obsession with me that, if the rest of the boys ever got me out, I would fight and eventually wall home with the bat and the ball. This would bring the game to an abrupt and since nobody else had a ball or bat. The boys cursed and called me names, but the tension did not last long and we generally got on very well.

• A state in which a person’s mind is completely filled with the thoughts of one particular thing only 
• Sudden and unexpected, often unpleasant. 

(i) What kind of life did the writer’s grandfather lead when he was a small boy? 

(ii) Mention only two of the childhood memories that the writer’s grandfather often shared with him.

(iii) Quote exact words which tell that studies were not the main focus in the writer’s grandfather’s days.

(iv) Which words in the extract are similar in 1 meaning to the following expressions?

• A piece of land in which fruit trees are grown.

Ans- (i) The writer’s grandfather had lead a carefree and beautiful life in his childhood days.

(ii) The writer’s grandfather plucked mangoes and guavas from the orchard. He ejoyed picnic on the banks of river with mouth watering food.

He puts down the phone and goes to the divan on the right, where there is a travelling bag, and starts packing. Whilst he is thus engaged, another man, similar in build to Gerrard enters from the right silently-revolver in hand. He is flashily dressed in an overcoat and a soft hat. Ans- (i) The word ‘he’ is referred to Gerrard, was  engaged in packing his travelling bag.

(ii) An intruder, similar in build to Gerrard enters his house silently taking a revolver in his hand.

(iii) The another man, is an intruder similar in build to Gerrard. He frightens Gerrard taking a revolver in his hand.

(iv) Words similar in meaning to the expressions.

2. Answer any three of the following questions in about 30-40 words each :

  (a) Why did the doctor turn Evans out of his car?

(b) What did the pandits advise the writer’s mother to do? Mention two things.

  (c) What does Aradhana’s mother ask her to do to prove her love for her parents?

(d) At what age did Bholi have an attack of smallpox? What was its effect on her looks?

Ans- (a) Evan’s behaviour turned the opinion of the doctor. First Evan took out another cigarette without consent of the doctor. Secondly, he  suspected a thief as he had stolen doctor’s watch, so he lost doctor’s sympathy and the doctor turned him out of his car.

(b) The Pandit advised writer’s mother to do penance for her sins. Pandit also advised writer to do some sternous physical exercises in order to regain his eyes sight.

(c) Aradhana’s mother offerred her a garland which was a sign of extreme love for her parents. Aradhana’s mother then asked her to go on the stage to dance and prove her love towards parents.

(d) Bholi was attacked by smallpox when she was two years old. Her face was full of pox marks and she looked ugly. This had greatly added to her discomfort life.

3. Answer the following in about 60 words: Give three reasons, why Tembu was not afraid Of anything.

(The Tiger in the Tunnel)

Ans- Tembu was not afraid of anything because, the tiger had already been killed. The forest God was pleased with him. He had his father’s axe which he knew how to use. These were the reasons Tembu was fearless.

Describe, in about five sentences, Nehru’s vision of future India.

(India-Her Past and Future)

Ans- Nehru ji wished to see a Modern India. Nehru ji wanted that Indians should march ahead unitedly.

Nehru ji wanted that India should become self sufficient. She should progress scientifically and technically. India should fulfill her five year plans. The masses should stop fighting on petly issues of community.

Every person should get full opportunity to grow according to his obility. 

4. Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow:

(a) Why is the air in grandmother’s house described as frozen? 

(b) What does the expression, an armful of darkness’ mean? 

(c) Exeplain the following:

“……… to lie behind my bedroom door like a brooding dog’

Ans- (a) The ‘frozen air’ expresses a view of complete emptiness and silence without any kind of sound.

(b) An armfull of darkness’ means complete aloofness.

(c) The darkness of thoughts prevailed behind the bedroom door like a dog drowned in deep thoughts.

• Showing a lot of love for somebody, often ignoring their faults 
• To show your approval by clapping your hands 

Ans- (a) The writer’s mother had suffered a lot after she had married a 9 years older man. She had to take up the burden of entire family and afforded well all family living. She made herself occupied and brought up her four children.

• (d) Doting.

7. Read the passage given below and complete the statements that follow: Ancient people worshipped all elements of nature, such as the sun, moon, rain, wind, rivers, trees, animals, etc. The composers of the Vedas lived on the banks of a river, which came to be called Saraswati. They worshipped the Goddess, who was the presiding deity of the river. Even today, on Basant Panchami Day, the Goddess is worshipped with great devotion. People worship the diety by offering flowers. The season of spring symbolizes hope and happiness as it comes after the harsh and bleak winter. Since the day heralds the auspicious season of spring, people wear yellow clothes. There is festivity in the air with trees blossoming into a riot of colours. Nature is at its best in the spring season. Read the passage given below and make a summary in about 100 words: 5 The Civil Disobedience Movement was actually started on 12th March, 1930. It was on this day that Gandhiji and 78 ashram members, including Sarojini Naidu, left Sabarmati in Ahmedabad for Dandi, a village on the Gujrat coast to break the salt laws. This march is popularly known as the ‘Dandi March’. The members of the march reached the seaside on 6th April. Gandhiji broke the salt laws that day by making some salt from seawater. It was an illegal action. The making of salt was a monopoly of the government. Breaking the salt laws Gandhiji said: “Our cause is strong, our means the purest, and God is with us. There is no defeat for Satyagrahis till they give up the truth.” The breaking of salt laws by Gandhiji was followed by similar actions in different parts of India where salt was being made. Many marches were organized in different parts of the country. All this changed the political atmosphere in India and the government got frightened. Ans- The passage is about Gandhiji’s disobedience movement which was conducted on 12th March 1930. Gandhiji with his seventy eight asharam members left Ahmedabad for Dandi village on the Gujarat coast. The aim of march was to break the salt laws. The salt laws was broken on 6th April and achieved success by overcoming the monopoly of the Government. He said that he had done a noble and meaningful work for the people of the nation. Ans- (a) A teacher is a role model. He has been under stood to be an ideal person of the society. A teacher bears high moral and good character. A teacher educates the young ones so he plays a vital role in building up their career and he extends a great contribution in building up a good nation. A teacher commands a universal repect, so he has a unique image and greater recognition in the society. So I prefer a profession of teacher, which is according to my taste. Cricket is the most popular game in India and many other countries of the world. I am very fond of playing cricket. I feel pride and get excited when I see the team India playing cricket against any other country. I am highly influenced by seeing the batting of Virat Kohali as well Shikhar Dhawan. They are cricket stars who have achieved tremendous records in their names. They have earned lots of fame and affluence through cricket. They are the heroes of the nation. So I aspire to be a famous cricketer. Acting is an art and comes out of the heart of an actor. One has to do a very hard to learn acting. Acting is also a natural gift to some one and they are call born actors. An actor is loved and honoured by all. Amitabh Bachhan is a famous actor who is recognised as a king of acting. His remarkable performances in many movies had left a deep impression upon the people. He has earned lots of fame and reconition in the field of cine world. So acting is my favorits and liked profession. I feel the acting is the most ideal task which I would prefer my life. Hence, I desire to be an excellent actor.  (b) Of course, music is my best time pass. I like to listen to music whenever I am exhausted by my studies and other toil. A melodious music touches the heart and it helps refresh the mind. Music not only entertains but also is a best means of recreation to keep us happy. I mostly like the songs of old movies which are sung by music. The melodius music recovers one from heavy fatigue as well as mental tiredness. Pop music is not according to my taste, so I prefer to listen to Gazzals and classical music. So music is my best time pass and playing guitar is my hobby.  (c) My sister is 3 years older to me. She is a student of B.Sc. honours. She is an ideal girl. She bears high moral, good character and best attitude. She is very bold and always has positive thought. She is good in her studies and makes best use of time as she performs all works according to time plan. She is my ideal. She always encourages me to work hard and achieve good results. I follow her guidance and always try to act upon her guidance. She is a girl of good nature and modest behaviour. As she is loved and cared well by my parents, I too love and respect her. She is my best companion and friend.  14. Write a letter to the the Editor of a newspaper encouraging the youth to donate blood and save valuable human life.
