Rank required depends upon the number of vacancies each year Girish…It also depends on your category. For last few years, around 1000 vacancies are reported for all the 24 Civil Services combined. Around half of the seats come under reservation. To get IAS, a general category candidate needs an All India Rank less than 80. When you prepare notes, prepare it point-wise for each topic and not question-answer mode. See an example for the topic ” Indus Valley Civilization” : https://www.clearias.com/indus-valley-civilization/.

Actually we cant judge one year preparation is sufficient to crack IAS.. It depends on person to person.. One person will complete one topic in 3hrs, another person will complete that same topic in 6hrs.. The Main thing is hardwork.. Complete the syllabus as soon as possible…

Hi Niharika, Thanks a lot for the nice comment. Please find how much time is left to you before the exam. If you have more than 6 months, concentrate on mains topics first and then focus on prelims. If you are a beginner, NCERT texts can be a starting source. Daily time table is upto you, but we advise studying all subjects on a daily basis allocating 45-60 min/subject.

I think there is no percentage criteria of graduation to appera UPSC exam.Just you have to become a graduate from a recognized university.So,nothing to worry about graduation’s percentage.Just focused on UPSC preparation. All the very best!

C. Raja Mohan is a distinguished fellow at the Observer Research Foundation and a contributing editor for the Indian Express. His books include "Crossing the Rubicon: The Shaping of India's New Foreign Policy" (2004) and recent book is "Samudra Manthan: Sino-Indian Rivalry in the Indo-Pacific" (2013).

Srinath Raghavan is Senior Fellow at CPR and Senior Research Fellow at India Institute, King's College London. He is the author of War and Peace in Modern India: A Strategic History of the Nehru Years (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), and 1971: A Global History of the Creation of Bangladesh (Harvard, 2013).

India has emerged as a leading voice in global affairs in the past two decades. Its fast-growing domestic market largely explains the ardour with which Delhi is courted by powers great and small. India is also becoming increasingly important to global geostrategic calculations, being the only Asian country with the heft to counterbalance China over time. Nevertheless, India’s foreign policy has been relatively neglected in the existing literature. This Handbook, edited by three widely recognized students of the topic, provides an extensive survey of India’s external relations. The authors include leading Indian scholars and commentators of the field and several outstanding foreign scholars and practitioners. They address factors in Indian foreign policy flowing from both history and geography and also discuss key relationships, issues, and multilateral forums through which the country’s international relations are refracted.
