[Start-it-up] How to Start a Playschool If you are passionate about teaching and hold prior experience in early childhood education, this is the perfect opportunity for you to become an edupreneur

By Shipra Singh Jan 27, 2020

You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.

Playschools are a very popular business idea in the education sector. So if you are passionate about teaching and hold prior experience in early childhood education, this is the perfect opportunity for you to become an edupreneur.

What is a playschool

A pre-school or better known as a playschool mainly caters to children aged between 2 and 4 years. As the name suggests, playschools offer a mix of learning and playing to very young children and help them develop social skills and learning-capabilities.

How to get started

You can either start your own playschool or take franchise of a popular playschool brand, like Kidzee, EuroKids or Bachpan etc. Opening a franchise doesn't require much planning as the parent company will set the guidelines for setting up and running the school. However, it comes with higher costs. Whereas if you want to start your own pre-school, you will need to manage everything yourself, from marketing to branding to designing your own curriculum. But, don't fret as setting up a playschool is not that cumbersome as it may sound.

business plan for a play school

So to start, identify a location for your pre-school. You will need around 1,000 sq ft area for a school that can accommodate up to 60 children. We suggest that you locate your school in a residential area because parents prefer sending their kids to playschools in near vicinity.

Now let us understand the permissions and guidelines for starting a pre-school business. Once you have decided the location, you must get a no objection certificate (NOC) from the society for running the playschool. For staffing, early childhood guidelines mandate one teacher or a trained professional for every 20 students. One important thing to note here is that if you want to teach in your own school, you will need a B.Ed degree or a diploma in pre-school teaching programme or an equivalent degree for the same.

Next let us move on to the investment required for setting-up the school.

Investment Required

You will require an initial investment for setting up your business, while other costs will be ongoing operating expenses. For setting up, furnishing and decorations will require you to shell out Rs 60,000-70,000. Setting up the play area with toys and other play equipments can cost you up toRs 1 lakh, whereas educational materials and learning tools in classes will be INR 25-30,000.

As for operational costs, rent of your play school will be between INR 30,000-35,000. Electricity and water bills can amount to about INR 20,000 per month. The major chunk of your operating costs will be on staffing, which will be around INR 80,000 for 3 teachers and 2 assistants. Of course, if you teach yourself, you can save on this cost to a great extent. Also, you may not have to hire more than one teacher in the beginning until your student count exceeds 20.

business plan for a play school

Next, you will spend INR 12,000-15,000 on marketing every month until you get enough students onboard, that can easily take up to 6-8 months.

Like we said earlier, starting a play school yourself works out cheaper compared to starting a franchise. Most popular playschool brands ask for a one-time investment of Rs 12 to 13 lakh, which is much higher than the costs we have just

Your source of revenue will be the fees charged to students, which will depend on the kind of services you provide. For a regular playschool that offers learning activities and a play area, monthly fees per student can range from INR 2,000-2,200. If you want to provide day care services and meals, you can charge upwards of INR 3,500 per student. Along with the monthly tuition fee, students will also pay a one-time admission fee that can range between INR 15,000-20,000 per student.

So after you have 60 regular students attending your school, you can easily book a profit of 30-35% on the total revenue.

Like any other business, the first year can be slow in terms of profit generation. That said, pre-school business is also one of the few recession proof business ideas as no parent will ever compromise on their kid's education. So once your business takes no matter what, your business will always flourish.

6 Tips to Start a Successful Play School

6 Tips to Start a Successful Play School

With an increasing literacy rate, the new generation of parents are making it a must to send their ward to play school for better grooming.  Consequently, every parent is eager to explore the best options available to them, in order to have the opportunity to start a successful play school .

Not only this, but after the increasing number of enrollments, the number of playschools is also rising at the moment. Many people are prospecting, planning and working on the idea of a play school business. Similar to other businesses, a play school business also requires a pre-planned layout for the startup. If you’re also looking forward to starting a play school , then we have the super 6 tips for you to start a successful playschool .

Tip #1: Name it wisely!

Play School Name- 1st Tip to start a successful play school

The name of a play school imposes a first impression in the minds of the spectators prospecting to enroll their child. So, it is very important to select a perfectly suitable name.

Go for a fancy attractive name that will drive more attention and audience towards the preschool . Make it sound different from the usual names.

Don’t go for core professional names. As here we are talking all about kids and their schooling, so select a name that is simple, sober and pronounceable by kids too. Consider a child’s point of introspection in naming the play school . Always go for a name that connects with the children in some or the other manner.

Remember naming the playschool aptly is very crucial to the success and viability of the same in the market. Keep it short and simple, but distinctive!

Tip #2: Think Economically!

Play School Economic Thinking- 2nd tip to start a successful play school

Whenever we think of starting a business, the main factor that comes to our mind is finance.  It is very important to have an adequate amount of finance to run a preschool for a great learning flow. Without money, the resources required for the teaching purpose will not be available for kids, and thus the implementation of the curriculum without the proper use of resources would be difficult.

Just like any other business, there are some basic amenities required to start a successful play school . From security, teaching curriculum, advanced programs, and staff to infrastructure and building, every single purpose requires a minimum of finance. Once the flow of functions is being followed and actions are being undertaken, it is not possible to disrupt the chain of finance. Thus, everything about finance has to be managed beforehand very economically as per the plans.

There are various financing options available in the market. If you lack money and wish to start a preschool , then you can easily opt for bank loans. This will give you an initial start-up fund and afterwards you can pay back the cost as per the revenue generated in instalments.

Also, attracting sponsors to your proposed play school business plan will also help you fund the various amenities of a playschool. This is a powerful promotional and expansion tool and gives an additive advantage to the sponsors too.

So, everything has to be planned very wisely and thinking economically like any other business, is a very crucial part of starting up a play school .

Tip #3: Go choosy on Location and Infrastructure!

Parents send their kids to a play school to explore things in an open environment and observe better. As per the location concern, setting up a play school in a spacious and green environment can be beneficial. This not only attracts children but also helps them to connect to the environment, observe and become sensitive towards nature. Adding to this, an open environment helps in learning new things in a better manner.

Secondly, look for a location with less competition from playschools and a lot of kids living around. Opening a school in a deserted place will definitely not give a chance for success. Conduct a survey in the location to inquire about the kids living around, the average financial status of the people living in the locality, and other playschools located around the area before going for a play school setup .

In accordance with the infrastructure facilities, make it as colorful, interesting and attractive as you wish. Play school being an arena for kids needs to undeniably look playful and attractive in every possible manner. Make your infrastructure and interiors look connected to the children and their interests.

Along with this, arrange for adequate facilities such as clean drinking water, refreshed toilets, proper ventilation in classrooms, medical room facilities, etc. Parents looking forward to enrolling their child will always opt for a well-managed school with all the basic amenities available.

For interiors, invest wisely in technical equipment, toys, and educational aids. Opt for the most modern types of educational kits for the kids to have a happy play-schooling experience without any chances of getting bored.

If your infrastructure and interiors are to the point, then you will definitely reap our success. Make it a happy-go-to-place for kids to visit daily.

Tip #4: Staffing the teaching and ground faculty!

Teachers, being the roots to a playschool should always be on the priority list. Staffing the correct number of teachers in your school depends on the number of children you’re catering to.

Hire the teachers specialized in teaching and handling preschoolers to avoid any mess in the classroom. Never staple a teacher with a huge bunch of kids at once to avoid the halfway learning. Always ensure that the teacher is handling only an adequate amount of kids at once to pay the required attention to each kid under her supervision. This will help the teacher to teach better and kids to learn better.

Also, go for regular teacher training programs to guide your teachers in using the latest technology along with the curriculum implementation to make teaching fun and boredom-free. Discuss the curriculum and the changes regularly with the teacher to communicate the right learning lessons in the classroom.

Along with the teaching faculty, employ the housekeeping and other ground staff to keep the kids and the school clean and hygienic at all times.

Tip #5: 2C’s are important – Curriculum and Culture!

The quality of the education and skills provided in your play school will ultimately boost your success in the near future.

According to the National Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) policy of India, there is a definite pattern and curriculum available for preschoolers. Follow the latest and upgraded pattern and continuously check for updates and changes in the existing one.

Maintain the desired standard and quality of learning in your play school to shape the young minds of the budding kids with a correct dosage of learning.

In concern to the culture of the play school, never make it very rigid with a list of rules and strict patterns to be followed. A play school is a place for kids to explore their inner selves and the first stage of interests. Have a flexible play school culture for the little kids. Making it too strict might not suit the kids as well as the parents. Let the little ones enjoy their initial years of learning with fun and not with horrific rules and regulations.

Not only this, commemorate the important days and organize events involving kids and their parents. This will help the parents to know about the culture of the play school better and attract the other children as well.

The blend of the correct curriculum along with a child-friendly culture of playschool will definitely help the kids to learn better and make your play school a great success!

Tip #6: Promote, promote and promote…

Once you’re ready with all the above-mentioned points and all set to go, start with the promotion of your play school using various means. Use different types of promotional techniques for promoting your playschool with a full boom.

Advertise using physical print technology such as pamphlets, newspaper columns, boards and hoardings, banners, etc. If you have much to spend, then you can also go for television advertisements for your school.

With the digital market trending on the charts, it is very likely for every new startup to go for digital marketing. You can also go for digital marketing wherein you can promote your play school on internet or www. (World Wide Web) using various promotional techniques digitally. Use social media platforms for promotion, such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, LinkedIn, etc.

Apart from this, for a recreational promotion, you can hold various contests on your school premises open for all the kids and parents. Investing in organizing summer camps is also a great option for recreational promotion. This will definitely attract a lot of kids and parents in and around your area.

So, these were the super 6 tips to start a successful play school .  I would also recommend you to visit all the playschools near your play school locality and observe the distinctive facilities they have in their curriculum or otherwise. This will help you to tease your thinking skills a bit more and scrap out some unique selling propositions for your playschool.

With all that a business does, you should always keep in mind that starting a play school is not a mere business, but there are lives of young minds attached to it. Ethically working, providing a personal guidance and shaping the minds of the little toddlers is a must-to-do for the playschool developers.

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning and give your play school a kick-start now!

It is a rewarding experience to guide the youngsters on their initial stage of learning, so know the steps on how to start a play school business.

Starting a Play School, a Rewarding Career and Profitable Business

Play school is a small educational institution for preschoolers or young children with ages between 3 years old and 5 years old. It is also known to other names like play group, pre-school, and nursery school. The main objective is not only to guide the little young ones to play but also to prepare their young minds for the initial stage of early childhood learning prior to their primary education. Hence, most play schools are managed by highly-trained pre-school teachers or qualified staffs and the qualifications plus the requirements may vary depending on state’s law.

Compared to a daycare, a play school also follows certain curriculums as administered by educational agencies in a particular state, and must adhere to strict regulations for the safety of the preschoolers. For example, in the United Kingdom play schools and other similar childcare institutions are required to meet the standards as set by governing educational agencies and must be registered to HMRC. To be eligible as a play school teacher in UK, aspirants are also required to follow the structure of EYFS or Early Years Foundation Stage and must gain at least level 2 of NVQ (National Vocational Qualification).

Steps on Starting a Play School

Managing a play school is not an easy task since the safety of the young children is the primary concern and starting the business also entails proper planning to ensure that it will generate an appropriate income to sustain your daily undertakings. Here are some valuable pointers if you’re planning to establish a play school in your locality.

Prepare a business plan.

A play school is a business, therefore as an owner preparing a business plan is useful for its operation and for seeking financial assistance from lending and granting institutions. You must decide also if you want to establish the school as a home business or you’re planning to acquire an establishment by renting a space or purchasing a building.

Learn the state’s rules and requirements.

Safety is important in childcare and a preschool institution, that’s why some states have their own rules and standards in issuing licenses to play schools. Contact your local state business licensure department to know your requirements and how to apply for liability insurance for your play school business.

Financing your institution.

You must set-up your financial plan based from your prospective in establishing your own play school plus the cost of licensing your business. Also, include the costs in buying the equipment, school supplies, as well as financing your promotional strategies.

Choosing the best location.

Either you plan for a home business or acquiring another location, the most important thing for your play school is the safety of the children and its accessibility.

Understanding the Play School Landscape

Before diving into the specifics of launching a play school, it’s crucial to understand the diverse landscape, especially when considering play schools in India. Research existing institutions in your area and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Identify unique aspects that you can integrate into your venture, ensuring that your play school stands out.

Creating a Business Plan

Every successful venture starts with a well-thought-out business plan. Outline your mission, vision, and objectives. Ensuring compliance with legal requirements is paramount, especially when establishing play schools in India. Obtain the necessary licenses and approvals from local education authorities. Familiarize yourself with safety standards, teacher qualifications, and infrastructure regulations to create a secure and conducive learning environment.

Choosing a Location

Selecting the right location is crucial for the success of your play school, whether it’s in India or elsewhere. Aim for a location that is easily accessible and safe. Consider proximity to residential areas, as parents often prefer play schools that are conveniently located. This will not only attract local families but also position your play school prominently when parents search for “ play school near me .”

Infrastructure and Amenities

Invest in creating a child-friendly environment with well-equipped classrooms and play areas. Implement safety measures and consider technology integration, such as a parent app , to keep parents engaged and informed about their child’s progress, events, and activities.

Whether you’re targeting Preschools in India or another region, ensure your curriculum aligns with local educational standards while offering a unique and enriching experience.

Maintaining a strong online presence is crucial for attracting parents, especially those searching for “playschool near me.” Optimize your website and leverage social media platforms strategically. By incorporating these insights, whether you’re targeting play schools in India or any other location, you can establish a successful and impactful institution within your community.

How to Write a Business Plan for Daycare and Preschool

  • Running a business

People sitting at a table reviewing business graphs

Writing a daycare or preschool business plan is a big task, but due diligence and hard work will help you understand what you’ll need to launch and run a daycare or preschool successfully.

people sitting around a table reviewing a business graph

What do daycare investors want?

Your local government will have rules and regulations you’ll need to follow as a small business owner and childcare provider. Start by reviewing the childcare licensing guidelines for your state and city. Once you’re clear on licensing guidelines, you’re ready to start writing your childcare business plan.

The purpose of a business plan is to help secure funding. You’ll likely need financing to launch your preschool or daycare, especially if you want to avoid the monthly repayment of a loan.

Investors provide businesses with money in exchange for partial ownership. As a result, they expect a larger return on their initial investment. Because many investors work in business, they prefer to invest in an established company.

Most investors look for:

Industry background and experience

Financial performance and promise.

Investors want to make money. Therefore, they are more inclined to work with experienced entrepreneurs and business owners to guarantee a return on their investment.

This might sound discouraging for those with little experience or without a business management background, but the opportunity doesn’t end there. You could consider bringing on a partner with a business background. Additionally, many investors act as a source of business advice.

You need to demonstrate that your business will make money. Investors will likely want to see signs of business growth before they give you money.

Additionally, investors will want to know about your financial stability. Questions an investor might ask are:

  • What do you plan to do with the money?
  • Has your business been up or down in recent years?
  • Is your company losing money? Are there signs of growth for the future?
  • How do you plan to repay your investment?

Of course, every investor is different, so they’ll consider various factors. While experience and financial promise are at the top of the list for most investors, they might also look for uniqueness, business readiness, an effective business model, and more.

Writing a daycare business plan

We’ve discussed licensing and investors. Now, you’re ready to begin the framework of your business plan for daycares and preschools. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Business description

Needs assessment, insurance policies, operating policies and procedures, marketing strategy.

Start with the basics: what does your daycare do? Detailing the service you’re offering will help you create a clear business plan. Next, you might want to write some goals or even a mission statement outlining your purpose and motivation.

Start by looking at general daycare or preschool industry trends, then narrow your scope to the preschools or daycares in your local area. Next, you’ll need to figure out who your target customers are and confirm that there is a need for a business like yours in your community.

Are there a lot of young families in your neighborhood? Are you located somewhere convenient for commuting parents? Does your business offer a specific service that your competitors don’t, like early check-in or extended hours?

Also, check out the competition. Research the existing daycare or preschool options in your community. Look at current preschool or daycare business plan samples. What makes your daycare or preschool unique?

Developing detailed budgets will help you run your small business. You’ll need to compare your current cash flow and expenditures to determine whether you’ll make a profit.

Build a budget for unexpected costs. For example, how many children do you need to serve to be able to pay your bills and stay afloat? Child Care Aware of America offers some terrific budgeting resources for this process.

Depending on the type and size of your preschool, you’ll need insurance policies of several different types, including liability, property, workers’ compensation, and business insurance. Check the licensing requirements for guidance in building this part of your preschool business plan.

Create a comprehensive handbook for families and staff that includes you center's policies and procedures. For instance, you'll need to develop an emergency plan , daycare sick policy , and other safety protocols according to your local childcare licensing requirements.

Your staff handbook will be a helpful resource your employees can reference and include all your employment policies including work and pay schedules, benefits, and information about professional growth and development. You can also include information on your center's philosophy and curriculum, classroom procedures, and expectations for working with children and families.

Your marketing strategy is the key to attracting customers. Decide what type of advertising you will use in front of potential customers. For example, list your school in local directories and participate in parenting and kid-friendly community events. Run a social media campaign focusing on your target population.

Another big part of childcare business marketing is differentiating yourself from other preschools. These days adopting daycare software is a surefire way to attract families with young children. A tool like brightwheel's center management feature will streamline your center's admission process, record keeping, and reporting, saving you up to 20 hours per month.

You can also use brightwheel for recording and tracking daily events and activities, and sending real-time updates to families throughout the day. It also offers secure, digital check-in/check-out and a paperless billing system. This is a great way to keep your families looped in on daily activities and handle all of your administrative tasks in one place.

Your business is ready!

Writing a business plan can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Once you secure the proper licensing, use the information in this article to guide you through creating a solid daycare business plan that drives investors and financing to your business.

These are just the basics to get you started. For further information, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s website has detailed instructions on creating each necessary part of a successful business plan.

Play School Business Plan

When it comes to business endeavors, the idea of a Play School business plan shows great promise and possibilities. It’s not just about molding impressionable brains; it’s also about molding futures and encouraging holistic development in the early years of a child’s existence. In this in-depth manual, we explore the complexities of creating a strong business plan for a Play School business, including its profitability, necessary first actions, potential hazards, and tactics for long-term expansion.

Table of Contents

Understanding the play school business plan.

For children ages two to five, a play school provides a safe, caring setting where they can participate in early learning and regulated play under the supervision of qualified teachers, acting as a foundational stepping stone. This important early childhood education stage establishes the foundation for future academic achievement and socioemotional health.

Why Play School Business is Profitable Business Venture

Entering the play school industry can be attractive due to its inherent profitability and cheap initial investment needs. In contrast to many other commercial endeavors, the education industry is a dependable investment route because it is durable even during economic downturns. Moreover, there is a growing need for high-quality play schools due to rising literacy rates and a growing parental awareness of the value of early childhood education.

Key Steps to Launching a Successful Play School Business

Market research:.

To evaluate variables including population density, income demographics, and the level of competition in the desired area, conduct in-depth market research. This knowledge will guide important choices about curriculum creation, pricing, and placement.

Location and Space:

Choose an appropriate site that satisfies certain needs, such as having enough room for study and play areas, being close to residential or business areas, and adhering to safety regulations. Attracting parents and guaranteeing a great educational experience for kids depend heavily on having a large, green space that is favorable to learning.

Registration and Licenses:

Learn about the state laws that control how educational institutions are run, and make sure that all required licenses and permissions are being obtained. Respecting the law not only increases credibility but also reduces potential hazards over time.

Furniture, Inventory, and Supplies:

Provide your play school with the necessary furnishings, instructional materials, and leisure activities to support hands-on learning. Every component, from educational toys and classroom decorations to vibrant play mats, should be carefully chosen to engage young brains and encourage holistic development.

Put together a capable group of instructors, aides, and managers who can provide excellent early childhood education. Sustain an ideal student-teacher ratio to guarantee individualized attention and efficient classroom administration.

Utilities and Transportation:

To support daily operations, provide dependable utility connections for phone, internet, water, and power. In order to provide parents and guardians with convenience and safety, you should also think about providing transportation services for students.

Marketing Strategies:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Navigating Potential Pitfalls

Even though starting a play school has a lot of potential, business owners need to be on the lookout for potential hazards that could compromise their success. An endeavor to establish a play school can be jeopardized by subpar staffing, insufficient marketing efforts, outdated teaching methods, and poor management practices. Aspiring entrepreneurs can reduce risks and position their play schools for long-term survival by emphasizing efficient management, encouraging creativity in curriculum design, utilizing clever marketing campaigns, and maintaining proper staffing levels.

Starting a play school is more than just a commercial venture; it’s a commitment to developing young brains and forming the next generation. Entrepreneurs can accomplish their dream of building a successful play school that is a community leader in learning excellence and inspiration with careful preparation, unrelenting dedication, and a passion for early childhood education. Take on the challenge, grab the chance, and set out on a revolutionary adventure to help each kid who enters your play school reach their full potential.

Operating Expenses:

Before we delve into the details of operating expenses, it's essential to understand what these expenses mean. In simple terms, operating expenses are your regular day-to-day expenses required to operate your business.

Rent/Mortgage Payments: Rent or Mortgage payments are one of the significant expenses of running a play-school business, and it's crucial to consider your location and the size of your school. Rent or mortgage payments can range from a few thousand dollars a month to tens of thousands, depending on the space and location of your play-school.

Salaries/Wages: Another major expense in the operating costs of a play-school business is employee salaries and wages. The number of staff members you require will depend on the size of your play-school, and salary considerations will vary from role to role.

Equipment and Supplies: Equipment and supplies like toys, books, furniture, and learning materials are some of the essential components of a play-school business, and therefore it's essential to budget correctly for them.

Utilities: Utilities are another operating cost that will vary depending on the size of your play-school. These expenses include electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone bills.

Insurance: Insurance is another operating cost that you should keep in mind when running a play-school business. Insurance policies needed can range from general liability insurance to property insurance, workers' compensation insurance, and more.

Advertising and Marketing Expenses: Advertising and marketing expenses are crucial for promoting your play-school business, and you should budget accordingly. These expenses can include website development, social media campaigns, and paid advertising on search engines like Google and Bing.

Professional Fees for Regulatory Compliance: Depending on your location, certain regulatory requirements need to be fulfilled. Some examples of compliance requirements include background checks, health and safety regulations, and childcare licensing. Factor in the cost of legal or professional fees needed to ensure that all required compliance is met.

Property Tax: Property tax is an annual expense that depends on the value of the property and any improvements you make throughout the year. Property tax payments will vary, but it's best to budget for an average of 1% to 3% of the total property value.

Maintenance and Repairs: The last expense on this list is maintenance and repairs. As with any property or equipment, regular maintenance and repairs are necessary to keep your play-school functional and safe for children. Remember to budget for general maintenance such as cleaning and repairs, but also keep aside extra funds for unexpected expenses.

In conclusion, understanding these operating expenses and budgeting for them is vital to ensure the long-term success of your play-school business. Keep in mind that these costs are just the starting point, and you may need to account for additional expenses based on your business's unique requirements.

Rent/Mortgage payments

One of the significant expenses in running a kids' playschool business is the Rent/Mortgage payments. The amount of Rent/Mortgage payments is dependent on the size of the facility and the location. As per the latest statistical information in USD, the average rent for commercial property ranges from $23 to $32 per square foot per year. The rates may vary depending on the location of the property.

The location of the property is critical as renting a facility in an urban area will typically cost more than one in a rural location. The Rent/Mortgage payments also depend on the size of the facility required to operate the playschool business. The larger the facility required, the higher the Rent/Mortgage payments will be.

It is essential to consider the long-term sustainability of any rental/mortgage payment agreement. Short term rental/mortgage payment agreements may have lower payments in the short run, but in the long run, investing in a more extended agreement can save money while providing a facility for the school for many years to come.

Typically, renting a facility is more common than purchasing one. However, if the school has sufficient capital, investing in a property will provide stability and save money in the long term.

Keep in mind that Rent/Mortgage payments are not the only outgoings that you'll have to consider. Mix this with other business operating costs such as furniture, supplies, staff wages, and other expenses to understand the full picture of the school's finances.

  • Research different areas and neighborhoods to consider the cost of rent/mortgage payments.
  • Consider the size of the facility needed for the school and find the optimal square footage required before looking for a facility.
  • Think about long-term rental agreements to secure a facility for a more extended period.

Salaries/Wages

When starting a kids playschool, one of the major expenses to keep in mind is the cost of salaries and wages for the employees. According to the latest statistical information, the average hourly wage for a preschool teacher in the United States is around $15.19. However, this can vary depending on the region, with some areas paying as much as $20 per hour.

In addition to the base hourly wage, playschool owners must also consider the cost of benefits and payroll taxes. Issues such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off all contribute to the total labor expense, and these costs can add up quickly.

Despite this, many playschools choose to offer competitive salaries and benefits packages in order to attract and retain highly qualified teachers. This is especially important in regions where there is a lot of competition for top talent.

One way to manage salaries and wages costs is to carefully track employee hours and schedules. By avoiding overstaffing, playschool owners can reduce unnecessary labor expenses while still ensuring that they have enough staff on hand to provide high-quality care and supervision.

It's also important to keep in mind that salaries and wages are not the only labor-related expense that playschool owners must consider. Additional costs can include workers' compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, and training and development expenses.

Overall, while the cost of salaries and wages can be a significant expense for kids playschool businesses, it's important to focus on attracting and retaining top talent in order to provide the best possible care for young students.

  • Hourly preschool teacher wage: $15.19
  • Varies by region, with some regions paying up to $20 per hour
  • Benefits and payroll taxes add to total expense
  • Many playschools offer competitive salaries to attract qualified teachers
  • Managing employee hours and schedules can help reduce labor costs
  • Additional labor-related expenses can include workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and training and development costs

Equipment and Supplies

Running a kids playschool business involves a lot of expenses, and one of these expenses is Equipment and Supplies. According to the latest statistical information, the average cost for equipment and supplies that a kids playschool should invest in is around $5,000 to $10,000 USD. Depending on the size, scale, and facilities of your playschool, the cost may vary.

Equipment and supplies are essential for a playschool business to function. The equipment would include items like tables, chairs, whiteboards, and other materials required for teaching. These are the basic necessities that you would need to invest in when starting a playschool business.

Supplies, on the other hand, would include items like teaching aids, books, stationery materials, and more. Depending on the curriculum and teaching approach you choose, the supplies you need to purchase will differ. Nevertheless, it is essential to have a significant investment to provide your kids with an enjoyable and challenging learning experience.

When it comes to purchasing equipment and supplies, there are many factors to consider. The quality of the equipment should be checked, and it should be long-lasting, and kid-friendly. The supplies, too, should be of high quality, safe, and interesting enough to attract the children's attention. Purchasing them from the right vendors or dealers would be the best option to get the quality and cost you desire.

Furthermore, regular maintenance and cleaning of equipment and supplies are crucial to extend their life span. This may require allocating a small portion of your budget towards maintenance, repair, and replacement expenses when required.

  • Tables and Chairs
  • Whiteboards
  • Teaching Aids and Materials
  • Stationery Materials
  • Toys and Play Equipment
  • Outdoor Play Equipment
  • Cleaning and Maintenance Tools

In conclusion, investing in good quality equipment and supplies is crucial when starting a kids playschool. This is not only a cost to the business but an investment that ensures a safe and enjoyable learning environment for the children.

Running a playschool business involves several overhead expenses, and one of the most significant ones is utility costs. As the name suggests, utility costs include charges for electricity, water, gas, and other services essential to operate a playschool. These expenses can add up to a considerable amount and can impact the profitability of the business.

According to the latest statistical information available, the average monthly utility cost for a small business in the United States is $633. This includes an average of $200 for electricity, $135 for natural gas, $115 for water, and $181 for other utilities. However, the actual cost can vary depending on the location, size of the business, and the amount of energy consumed. For a playschool business, the utility costs can be significantly higher due to the need for continuous lighting and air conditioning.

Managing utility costs

It's essential to actively manage utility costs to keep the expenses under control and ensure the continued profitability of the playschool business. Here are some strategies that can help:

  • Monitor Energy Usage: Installing energy-efficient light bulbs and equipment can reduce the amount of electricity consumed by the playschool. Additionally, keeping track of the usage patterns and turning off equipment when not in use can help reduce electricity consumption.
  • Reduce Water Usage: Considering the high usage of water in a playschool, it's essential to adopt strategies that reduce wastage. Installing low-flow fixtures and encouraging handwashing can help save water.
  • Shop for Better Rates: Shop around for utility providers to get the best deals. Use online comparison tools or work with a utility broker to find the most cost-effective plans. Negotiate rates with utility providers where possible.
  • Use Automatic Billing: Late payment fees can add up over time, and it's essential to make sure that the utility bills are paid on time. Using automatic billing can ensure that the bills are paid on time and avoid any penalties.

Utility costs are a significant expense for any playschool business, but actively managing them can help to minimize the impact on profitability. By adopting energy-saving strategies, shopping for better rates, and avoiding late payment penalties, playschool businesses can keep the utility costs under control and ensure continued growth and success.

Operating a kids playschool business incurs certain costs that every owner should anticipate. Insurance costs is a critical expenditure for any business, and playschools are no exception. As per the latest statistical information available, the average insurance cost for a playschool in the USA ranges from $500 to $2,500 per annum.

As a business owner, insuring your playschool is vital. Accidents can happen, and it is best to be prepared for eventualities. The following are some insurance options that you can consider for your playschool.

  • Liability insurance: This safeguards your playschool against lawsuits that may arise from accidents or injury caused by your staff or the child itself. The average cost of liability insurance can range from $500 to $2,000 annually.
  • Property insurance: This protects your playschool in case of damages to the property from natural disasters such as floods or fire. The average cost of property insurance is between $1,000 to $4,000 per annum.
  • Workers' compensation insurance: This is required by law in most states; it provides medical and wage benefits for any staff that gets injured on the job. The cost of workers' compensation insurance can vary, but the average cost is around $750 per employee per year.
  • Commercial auto insurance: If your playschool uses a vehicle for field trips or any other activity, this insurance protects it in the event of an accident. The average cost of commercial auto insurance is around $1,200 a year.

It is best to talk with insurance providers specializing in business insurance as they can provide you with a tailor-made policy that suits your playschool business's unique needs. Insurance costs may seem high, but the investment is well worth it in the end, as it protects your business from unexpected losses.

In conclusion, paying for insurance costs is a must for a playschool business owner, and this is something to factor in when creating a budget. Your playschool staff, students, and parents will undoubtedly breathe easy knowing that you have taken steps to protect everyone involved.

Advertising and Marketing expenses

One of the key factors that drive the growth of any business is marketing and advertising. However, the actual cost spent on advertising and marketing varies from business to business. For a kids' playschool, the advertising and marketing expenses can be quite significant, even more so for new and emerging businesses.

According to recent statistical data, the average marketing and advertising expenditure for small businesses ranges from $9,000 to $10,000 per month. The vast majority of small businesses allocate at least 7% of their total revenue to advertising and marketing expenses.

When it comes to kids' playschools, the advertising and marketing strategy is crucial to success. Parents are generally very selective and cautious when choosing the right playschool for their children, and competition is fierce. Word of mouth is important, but digital marketing and advertising play an increasingly important role.

A key reason for this is that more than 90% of parents research the best playschools online before making a decision, and social media platforms are an important way to build trust with potential customers. Social media boosts the visibility of the brand and help to create a community and a sense of trust with potential customers.

  • Facebook advertising is one of the most popular ways of advertising, reaching billions of potential clients.
  • Email marketing is effective and cost-efficient, and can be personalized to target specific demographics.
  • Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising has become increasingly popular and effective to reach potential customers.

In conclusion, advertising and marketing expenses are a key factor in the success of any kids' playschool business. The cost of marketing and advertising is not cheap, but failing to invest in the right strategies can be even more expensive. It is important to take a strategic approach to establish a strong and memorable brand that speaks to the target customer base.

Professional Fees for Regulatory Compliance

Starting and managing a kids playschool business comes with significant operating costs, and one of the most crucial elements to consider is regulatory compliance. As a playschool business owner, you need to adhere to various rules and regulations on licensing, health and safety standards, staffing, and many others. To meet these compliance requirements, you will need to enlist the services of various professionals, whose fees contribute to the overall operating costs of your business.

Recent data shows that the average professional fees for regulatory compliance for small businesses in the United States is about $12,000 to $14,000 per year. This cost varies depending on the nature of the business and the extent of regulatory oversight required. For playschool businesses, the cost of regulatory compliance can be relatively high due to the numerous regulations governing child care facilities.

To meet these compliance requirements, you may need to work with various licensed professionals, such as lawyers, accountants, consultants, and trainers. These professionals help you understand the regulations that apply to your business and guide you on how to achieve compliance. You may need to seek legal advice on licensing requirements, labor laws, and liability issues. Accountants can help you with tax compliance and bookkeeping, while consultants and trainers can offer training on child care and safety standards.

Another significant cost related to regulatory compliance is the fee charged for licenses and permits. To operate a playschool business, you need to obtain various licenses and permits from the relevant state and local authorities. The licensing process may involve several steps, including inspections, background checks, and filing of paperwork. You will need to pay fees for the applications and renewals of these licenses, adding to your regulatory compliance costs.

It's important to note that non-compliance with regulatory requirements can result in significant penalties and legal ramifications that can cost your business even more. Unsatisfied customers and negative reviews can also harm your reputation, causing you to lose business even when you achieve compliance.

In conclusion, regulatory compliance is crucial for success in the playschool business, but it comes with significant costs. To minimize the impact of these costs on your business, consider enlisting the services of professionals who specialize in regulatory compliance for playschool businesses. Keep accurate records and track your compliance progress to avoid penalties or any negative impact on your business reputation.

Property tax

Operating a kids playschool business involves many costs that must be taken into consideration before starting the business. One such cost is the property tax. Property tax is a tax that is imposed on real estate, and it is usually based on the value of the property.

Latest statistical information: According to the National Tax Association, the average property tax paid by homeowners in the United States is around $2,000 per year. However, the exact amount of property tax that must be paid depends on a number of factors such as the location of the property, the size of the property, and the assessed value of the property.

For a kids playschool business, the property on which the facility is located is an important asset that helps to generate income. As such, the property tax must be factored into the operating costs of the business. Failure to do so can result in unexpected expenses that can negatively impact the profitability of the business.

It is important for owners of a kids playschool business to understand the property tax laws and regulations that apply to them. This includes understanding the deadlines for payment of property tax, how the property tax is calculated, and the appeals process in case of disputes regarding the property tax assessment.

Ways to reduce Property tax: There are several ways that owners of a kids playschool business can reduce their property tax. One way is to take advantage of any exemptions or deductions that are available. For example, in some states, there are exemptions for certain types of property such as non-profit organizations.

Another way to reduce property tax is to challenge the assessed value of the property. This can be done by hiring a professional appraiser to conduct an appraisal of the property and then presenting this appraisal to the local tax authority. If the appraisal shows that the assessed value of the property is too high, the property tax can be reduced accordingly.

In conclusion, property tax is an important cost that must be considered when operating a kids playschool business. Failure to do so can result in unexpected expenses that can negatively impact the profitability of the business. Understanding the property tax laws and regulations that apply to the business and taking advantage of any available exemptions or deductions are important ways to reduce the property tax and ensure the success of the business.

Maintenance and Repairs

One of the key expenses involved in running a kids' playschool business is the cost of maintenance and repairs. It is essential to keep the premises in good condition to ensure the safety and well-being of the kids. Any damage or repair work needs to be addressed immediately to avoid any hazards.

A recent statistical report suggests that the average cost of maintenance for a small play school business in the United States is around $10,000 per year. However, depending upon the size and condition of the facility, the cost may vary. Therefore, it is crucial for business owners to set aside a budget for these maintenance and repair expenses.

Preventive Maintenance:

The best way to minimize these costs is by adopting a preventive maintenance approach. Regular inspections, cleaning, and servicing of the equipment and facilities can help in identifying minor issues before they turn into costly repairs. Work with a professional contractor to develop a comprehensive maintenance plan that meets the specific needs of your playschool business.

Keep an Inventory:

Keeping an inventory of all the equipment, furniture, and appliances in the playschool can be a wise move. This approach will help in keeping track of the maintenance schedules and identifying the equipment that needs replacement or repair. It is also critical to keep an inventory of the spare parts and supplies that are necessary for repairs.

Hire Professionals:

When it comes to repairs or maintenance of the playschool facility, it is best to hire a professional service provider. Attempting to fix things yourself may lead to further damage and additional expenses. Ensure that you work with a licensed and experienced contractor who can offer quality services at a reasonable price.

Contingency Fund:

In addition to setting aside a budget for maintenance and repairs, it is essential to establish a contingency fund for unplanned repairs or renovations. Emergencies such as natural disasters, equipment failures, or accidents may occur at any time. Therefore, having a contingency fund can help in addressing these situations quickly and smoothly without affecting the daily operations of the playschool business.

  • Regular maintenance and inspections are important to identify any potential issues before they turn into costly repairs
  • Keeping an inventory of equipment and supplies can help in identifying repair and replacement needs
  • It is important to work with a licensed and experienced contractor for repairs and maintenance
  • A contingency fund is essential to handle unplanned repairs or renovations

By following these tips, playschool business owners can ensure the smooth functioning of their facility while minimizing the maintenance and repair expenses.

Conclusion:

Operating a kid's play-school business is a fulfilling venture for anyone passionate about educating and nurturing young minds. However, as we have discussed, it also involves significant financial responsibilities that one needs to consider regularly.

From $339.1 billion in 2019, the global child day-care services market is expected to reach $520.3 billion by 2027. With such massive potential, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of the operating expenses you need to consider when running a play-school business.

We have highlighted the most significant operating expenses you need to budget for, including rent or mortgage payments, salaries, equipment and supplies, utilities, insurance, advertising and marketing expenses, professional fees for regulatory compliance, property tax, and maintenance and repairs.

What is a School Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your school as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a School

If you’re looking to start a school or grow your existing school, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your school to improve your chances of success. Your school business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Schools

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for schools are donations and gifts, tuition, personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for schools.

How to write a business plan for a school.

If you want to start a school or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your school business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of school you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a school that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of schools?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overview of the school industry.
  • Discuss the type of school you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of school you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of schools:

  • Private K-12 school : this type of school typically charges tuition, and may be affiliated with a religious organization, or specialize in a particular learning method.
  • Charter school: this type of school offers primary or secondary education for a tuition, and may receive some public funding, and/or donations. These schools require their students to take state-mandated exams.
  • Special subject school: this type of school specializes in teaching a specific subject, such as driving, first-aid, self-defense, fine arts, language, or general tutoring.
  • Preschool: this type of school typically serves children who are aged 3 and 4. These schools prepare young children to enter formal education, and are funded by some combination of tuition, donations, and government grants.

In addition to explaining the type of school you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of students served, the number of students accepted into elite formal education institutions, etc.
  • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the school industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the school industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your school business plan:

  • How big is the school industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your school? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your school business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: families with elementary-aged children, families with high-school-aged children, families with preschool children.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of school you operate. Clearly, families with high schoolers would respond to different marketing promotions than families with preschoolers, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other schools.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes public schools, virtual schools, and families who do homeschooling. You need to mention such competition as well.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of students do they serve?
  • What type of school are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide specialized instruction, either in subject or in method?
  • Will you offer courses or services that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a school business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of school that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide religious-focused K-8 education, college preparatory courses, or single-subject instruction like driving or fine arts?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the courses and/or extracurricular activities you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your school. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your school located in a growing neighborhood, in the city center, or will you operate purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your school marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your school, including answering calls, planning and delivering instruction, applying for grants, fundraising, performing administrative tasks, overseeing instructors, handling discipline, scheduling and monitoring extracurricular activities, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to enroll your Xth student, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your school to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your school’s potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing schools. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in running a school or experience with public school administration or who has served on a public school board.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you enroll 100 or 1,000 students per semester, and/or offer extracurricular activities? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your school, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a school:

  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your school location lease or a list of elective courses or extracurricular activities you will offer.

Writing a business plan for your school is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the school industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful school.

business plan high school

How to draft a great business plan for your private school project?

A good business plan for a private school must reflect the unique aspects of educational services.

To start, it is crucial to provide a comprehensive overview of the educational market. This includes offering up-to-date statistics and identifying emerging trends in the education sector, as illustrated in our private school business plan template .

Then, you should articulate your educational philosophy and mission. This encompasses your vision, identifying your target demographic (for example, local families, international students, students with special educational needs), and the distinct educational approach of your school (progressive, traditional, Montessori, International Baccalaureate, etc.).

The next section should delve into market analysis. This requires a thorough understanding of local educational options, demographic trends, and parental preferences.

For a private school, particular emphasis should be placed on the curriculum and extracurricular programs you plan to offer. Detail your academic programs, sports, arts, and other activities, and explain how they cater to the needs and aspirations of your student body.

The operational plan is equally important. It should outline the location of your school, the design and facilities of the campus, faculty recruitment, and the student enrollment process.

For a private school, it is important to highlight the qualifications of your teaching staff, educational methodologies, and standards for student safety and welfare.

Then, address your marketing and enrollment strategy. How will you attract new students and retain current ones? Consider promotional methods, community engagement, and alumni relations.

Adopting digital strategies, such as a user-friendly website or active social media engagement, is also vital in the modern landscape.

The financial structure is another critical component. This includes the initial investment, tuition fee structure, operational expenses, and the point at which the school becomes financially sustainable.

In a private school, managing cash flow is essential, as there may be significant upfront costs before tuition fees are received. Therefore, careful financial planning is imperative. For assistance, refer to our financial forecast for a private school .

Compared to other business plans, a private school's plan must pay special attention to accreditation requirements, educational standards, and long-term student outcomes.

A well-crafted business plan will assist the school founder not only in refining their vision and strategies but also in attracting investors or securing loans.

Lenders and investors seek robust market analysis, realistic financial projections, and a clear understanding of the school's day-to-day operations.

By presenting a thorough and substantiated plan, you showcase your credibility and dedication to the educational venture's success.

To achieve these goals while saving time, simply fill out our private school business plan template .

These statistics underscore the critical role private schools play in the educational landscape and their substantial contribution to the economy.

Emerging trends in the education sector indicate a shift towards personalized and technologically integrated learning experiences.

There is a growing emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, with schools investing in advanced science labs and computer programming courses to prepare students for the future job market.

Additionally, the rise of digital learning platforms and educational software is transforming traditional teaching methods, allowing for more interactive and student-centered learning.

Environmental education and sustainability are also becoming integral parts of school curricula, reflecting the increasing awareness of global environmental issues.

Moreover, there is a heightened focus on mental health and well-being, with schools incorporating mindfulness practices and social-emotional learning into their programs.

These trends demonstrate how private schools are evolving to meet the educational needs and expectations of a new generation of students and parents.

Success Factors

The success of a private school hinges on several critical elements.

Foremost, the quality of education provided, including the qualifications of teachers and the rigor of academic programs, is paramount in attracting and retaining students.

The location and facilities of a school can significantly influence its appeal to potential students and their families.

The working capital requirement for our private school will be meticulously managed to ensure we have sufficient liquidity to support our day-to-day operations, including purchasing educational materials, managing inventory, and paying staff salaries.

The break-even point for our school is the number of students needed to enroll to cover all our costs, including startup expenses, and begin generating a profit.

It will signal the point at which our school becomes financially viable.

Performance indicators we will monitor include the student-to-teacher ratio to ensure quality education, the retention rate of students to measure satisfaction and success, and the return on investment to evaluate the efficiency of the capital invested in our educational venture.

These indicators will aid us in assessing the financial health and overall success of our private school.

How to market a play school business?

February 14, 2018 | By Hitesh Bhasin | Filed Under: Business

This was a question asked by one of the readers at Marketing91. He is a headmaster at a play school and wanted to know how to market a play school?

One of the first things to notice here is that the Play school is a service business so we have to apply all marketing concepts of services to such a business. People, physical evidence and process play a critical role in the marketing of services .

There are 13 points that i would like to suggest for the better marketing of a play school.. The first preference is off course given to the product . But other factors play a major role too.

Table of Contents

1) Ambiance –

The ambiance of a play school is very important considering the small age of children and their ability to grasp better with different colors . Thus, a play school should always be more colorful to keep the mood of children upbeat. A dry environment can make children cranky.

2) Teachers –

Handling one child needs a lot of patience. But handling many children in a playschool requires an altogether different type of person. If the teacher of the play school is good, then hardly anything needs to be done for the marketing of the play school. Children themselves will reach home happy and the school will be marketed. Thus, the staff of the school plays a major role in the play school’s success.

Teachers in play school

3) Keep regular events –

Dancing events, poem events, and other such events which allows parents to meet with each other as well as makes the children interact more socially can help the children in the long run. At the same time, it can also help build the brand of the school and show the neatness and tidiness of the school to parents so that they recommend the school more. In case of marketing a play school, word of mouth will be the single most effective communication .

4) Paper inserts before start of admissions –

If your school is a new one, then you can introduce it better by doing paper inserts in the local newspaper. Using a combination of ATL and BTL activities will help in the introduction of the school in the vicinity and will give a better start then otherwise possible.

5) Timetables and brochures –

Although brochures and time tables are more common in schools, for play schools too, the same can be given to parents so that they understand what their child will experience in the coming 2 years. Furthermore, these same brochures can also explain what is the parents role in the child’s upbringing and how they can direct the child better.

6) Give feedback –

Parents would always love to know how their little one is doing. So it’s important that we give the right feedback to parents. For example, is the baby eating right, is he active throughout the day, does he mingle or stays within himself. All this feedback can help the parent learn better about the development of their child and what improvements are required from time to time.

7) Give personal attention –

Some times less is more. If you take lesser admissions, then you give more attention to students. Or you can also opt for a model where the teacher student ratio is optimum. This gives an exclusivity factor to the play school for which you can also ask a premium from parents. However, the ultimate goal is the child’s development which will automatically drive business.

8) Take small trips in nearby areas –

A picnic is loved by everyone. In today’s busy lives, the parents also need an excuse to spend quality time with their little one. So in a month or two, you can organize a small picnic very nearby in a park or a mall with the students parents so that they have fun with their children. This initiative by the play school will involve the parents as well as the children and will build the brand better.

Play school picnic

9) Give discounts to limited people-

A real mark of a corporate is when they give back to society. All the above steps are possible when the parents have money. However, there are also the needy people in the world who want to give the best to their children but cant due to lack of money. Help them. Take their children in. It will be helpful if out of every 50 or 80 students, at least 2-4 are the homeless ones or the poor ones in need of help and guidance. You can always dress them up so that they can mix up with the crowd. And you will need to screen the children accordingly. However, this act will help the upbringing of poor children and you will be giving back to society.

10) Expand –

Opening up more franchise’s of your play school is the sure shot way of getting more revenue out of your play school business. However, the critical factor here is the monitoring of each of your franchise. The typical business hierarchy of having a manager on site applies. Along with this, you need to recruit good teachers and keep them in rotation or keep some of them on the bench so that there is no gap in students teaching.

11) Operations –

Giving out salaries, doing office work, completing government requirements, all require proper planning . So if you are a franchise, you need to have the right operations in place before you start to expand. You need the right people monitoring the complete activity from a head office so that a red flag can come up whenever something is happening which is not as per the brands standards. These things involve investment on the operational side. And if you don’t invest in people, then it will be very difficult for you to expand beyond a certain point.

12) Learn managerial aspects –

As your business grows, specially something as sensitive as play schools, you need to learn about the locus of control i.e you can only control a few people at a time. Thus, the more you expand, the more you lose control. In such a case, you need to have a system in which, even after losing control, the play school works in an organized manner. These implementations require managerial learnings and it is highly recommended that people on top at least read about managerial aspects and how to manage businesses so as to implement smart ideas for better success in the long run.

13) Branding –

Overall, the above are 13 steps which give guidance on how to market a play school. I would love to hear more ideas from the people who read this article. Please submit your ideas in the comments below.

Taking up play school business is a business stance that is gaining popularity among the entrepreneurs of India. The primary reason this venture as a business is gaining popularity is because of its lucrative nature in terms of low investment, even lesser legal compliances and huge outcome. Kidzee, a popular chain of playschool franchisee provider quotes an ROI on its franchisee to be 200% in 4 years; such is the outcome of this business. Once settled, this business does not give you the stress like recessions and low impacts.  Healthcare and education are two such sectors which are least affected by any kind of economic crises.

Structuring a playschool business in India – Process Chart

But no matter how lucid and easy going business field one might be in, one certainly needs a good business plan to grow aggressively in the market. As it is commonly said, a stagnant business/product is as good as a dead business. Therefore, to start a business too, one needs a good business structure. Here are a few items that are supposed to be in the checklist in starting a playschool business:

Selecting a business model

When one plans to start a playschool business in India, he has two options in hand i.e. either start his own venture or take up a franchise. Both of them have their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

On getting a franchisee, there are certain benefits like there are certainly advantages like:

  • There is no requirement of aggressive marketing or campaigning that is taken care of by the brand-name holder.
  • The terms set out in the agreement for setting up a business model is easier and has very low investment criteria.

Let us take a look at the top franchisors and the criteria they site

  • Required investment for Kidzee Playschool is just Rs. 5 to 10 lakhs and the required floor area is 2500 square feet
  • The net investment to open a Tree House play school franchise in India is also under Rs. 10 lakhs and the minimum required area is 1000 square feet.
  • A Hello Kids play school is about Rs. 10 lakhs, and the required floor area is a minimum of 1000 square feet.
  • One needs a minimum investment of Rs. 10 lakhs to open a Shemrock franchise preschool in India as well as a floor area of 2500 square feet.
  • The cost of opening Euro Kids franchise is 10-15 lakhs and area required is 2000 square feet.
  • The return on Investment assured by this franchise is easy to achieve and are considerably high. The risk factor involved in such franchise business is very less.
  • Professional support in terms of setting up the school (pre-defined infrastructure, staff and administration), managing it, getting market recognition etc. are some advantages of having a brand franchise.

However there are certain disadvantages also attached to the franchise form of business.

  • Events of Default clause – may cause the termination of contract without any material default on your part;
  • Exit Option Clause – The contract may not allow you to exit easily and you are stuck for a long time with a bad business deal;
  • Non-Compete, Non Solicit Clause – It may restrict you to venture with other brands of play school or start your own venture;
  • Penal clauses – It may impose unnecessary penalties on minimum defaults and may give rise to unnecessary litigation;
  • Trademark and franchising Clauses are important because that is the sole advantage you are deriving out of the franchise agreement therefore conduct a thorough due diligence on it; and
  • Survival Clause – Refers to the clauses that survive post termination of contract. A bad survival clause will trigger a good deal for you.

Starting-your-venture

Setting up one’s own venture

Setting up one’s own venture also has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

  • One gets to handcraft one’s own business model. One can choose a partner and a scale of business investment of his choice.
  • There is a certain degree of freedom as he is not bound by a standard form of agreement.
  • He gets to apply his own expertise, entrepreneurial ideas into it and design an innovative venture.

Disadvantages

  • There are a large number of formalities that need to be completed. That all has to be done meticulously.
  • Apart from the investment of money and space, time and efforts are also required from the part of the venture holder. There are several important tasks like planning and finalizing the curriculum, setting up the administration and infrastructure based on the norms and rules as required by the curriculum and much more.

Commercials

One of the important aspects before venturing into legal formalities is to have the commercial structure clear. What could be the source of funds? How much of debt or equity needs to be injected in the business:

Investment Required

  • Land and Building – Ranging from 1000 square feet to 2500 square feet
  • Capital Investment – Ranging from Rs. 7,00,000 to 10, 00,000 (depends on the scale of business.)
  • Furniture like plastic chairs, tables and classroom equipments amounting to 40,000- 80,000
  • Play equipments like rockers, slide etc. Also book racks, wall hangings and staff furniture needs to be considered. [2]
  • Appropriate Human Resources qualified to man the organisation. Minimum wages that need to be paid out is 80 rupees per day. 1 staff per 10 students and 1 teacher per 20 students. A venture like this typically has 20 -50 students. [3]

The Return on Investment as quoted from famous franchises is approximately 2 to 3 years [4] depending on the franchise and the scale of the business. Setting up a franchise is easier. The process is as follows:

  • A simple forms needs to be filled in their website.
  • They are going to conduct the survey if one meets their criteria to select a favourable location, do the marketing and campaigning.
  • You will be able to start a playschool with their guidance at every step.
  • There are several portals which provide gateways to apply to these playschool franchises. Like www.startingfranchise.in

But if the venture is one’s own, then certain factors have to be kept in mind before making an investment in order to reach an ROI. The factors that need to be taken care of are as follows:

  • Geography – Parents till the initial stages of the growth of the child do not want to send their children far, therefore it has to be in a residential area with open spaces around. Again depends on the locality.
  • Demographic Profile – Once the location is fixed, than one needs to look for the demography of the area. A place with a nuclear family would be more likely to send their children to play school than places with joint family where the child mostly gets its education from elders. Also it is advisable to keep a tap on the type of income group people that live there. It will help set the fee structure.
  • Market Survey – Conduct a survey to find out the potential number of students and the preference of the kind of playschool.

Break Even Point

  • From the industry standard, let us keep the Break Even Point (where both Fixed Cost and Variable Cost are absorbed) at 1.5 years
  • The Fixed Cost is assumed at initial stage as INR 7, 00,000 (FC)
  • The Variable Cost is expected to be 4, 00,000 (TVC)
  • Also, we set a target to break-even our business in 1.5 years.
  • Find out the annual fees that your competitors are charging to estimate your fees.
  • Let’s assume that the fees charges would be INR 25,000 per student and the number of students to be X. Therefore the Total Revenue (TR)would be INR25, 000X.

Contribution = TR – TVC

  • 25,000X — 4, 00,000.’
  • We have kept the break even timeline as 1.5 years. Whatever is earned over and above our variable costs, will be used to cover the fixed expenses. Post that all earnings would be to be profits of the institution
  • Divide FC by Contribution to get your breakeven period in years.
  • Therefore we get the following equation:
  • 700,000 / (25,000X — 400,000) = 1.5.
  • The value of X stands as 34.67.
  • Thus we need at least 35 students for first 1.5 years to realise all costs.
  • Even after the breakeven point, the profit will be INR 4, 75,000.

Potential Investors

  • Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship
  • Michael and Susan Dell Foundation
  • Rural Technology Business Incubator
  • LGT- Liechtenstein Global TrustVenture Philanthropy
  • UnLtd India
  • Footprints Child Care

3. Legal Formalities

news6276

In case of playschools, the legal compliances are very minimalistic. Thus the cost of litigation that may arise out of such process is also very less.

  • The Shops and Establishments Act is not applicable

In case of playschools, the Act is silent and one can run your playschool without a registering under Shops and Establishment Act.

Labour laws:

The following labour laws have to be kept in mind:

1. Provident Fund payments – If there are more than 20 employees the organisation has to abide by provident fund rules otherwise may be subject to penal provision under 14B of the Act of 1952.

Checklist of the same could be found at http://epfindia.nic.in/Applicability.htm

2. The Minimum Wages Act, 1948 – The minimum wages for primary schools is Rs. 80.

3.  As per the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 – If there are more than 20 employees, one needs to pay a 1 month at anytime during the year.

Forming the entity:

If you start your own institution, it can be done either as a partnership or as a Section 8 company or even an NGO under a trust. It is usually easier to form a partnership, and cheaper and quick to register. Forming a company can take up to 4 weeks, and costs around Rs. 35000. Be careful with the formation of the partnership deed and the profit sharing.

LLP in India has certain regulations which need to be abided by, according to the LLP Act, 2008 in India. Although the regulations are more than partnership firms but less than floating a company given the ever increasing regulations for companies under Companies Act.

Running it in a residential area:

Most playschools are located in residential areas. The first thing that needs to be looked into is whether the rental agreement permits it. Also, if it is an apartment or consortium or society apartment, the bye-laws of the apartment/association/ society consortium should be looked into for permits to run a playschool. Otherwise, there is no running a playschool in residential premises. Requisite permission has to be taken from the society it is operating in.

It has been decided by Courts in different states that a chartered accountant, yoga teacher and lawyer can carry on their work in residential premises so there is no reason why a playschool cannot be carried on as well, as long as the disturbance to neighbours is minimized. [5]

Maharashtra Preschool Centres (Regulation of Admission) Act of 1996 or Tamil Nadu Private School Education Act:

These Acts provide for compulsory registration of pre schools in certain state. Only in a few states, one needs permission from appropriate authority for starting preschool in Maharashtra. It should be education officer of Municipal Corporation who will provide with the certificate. However this is the only state where you need such permission. The procedure is broadly as follows:

  • Name the institution. It should not duplicate
  • Define your budget.
  • Develop a preschool curriculum [6]

Deciding a curriculum

The final step to see the business set up to reach its initial stage is setting up a curriculum for the day school. This depends upon the type of playschool being formed Children of this age group are mostly very active and require engage in various activities. Their mindset is set to explore, observe and grasp and learn quickly. Their socio economic backgrounds may be different and so shall be their languages thus every child is different in terms of energy and understanding.

There can be different programs based on the age group:

  • Mother Toddler program for 9 months and 2 years of age: Mother Toddler program again is designed to help mothers understand child’s socialisation needs and help them develop their skills while playing.
  • Early Childhood Teacher training program (E.C.C)/Nursery teacher training program: launching this year – Such programs are aimed towards training students to be ready for pre primary or early school. Theory plus practical courses of 7 months are advisable for this stage.
  • Day Care centre curriculum – It is a different sort of set up. Most of the parents are working and are unable to provide teaching time to their kids. Such parents look for quality preschools where their child could get proper early childhood education.

An ideal playschool curriculum fulfils all the requirements of a child. A typical preschooler’s curriculum includes a good mix of reading, preschool worksheets, writing and math exercises along with colourful fun preschool activities. Such wide scale of activities helps children in learning and developing their skills in all the fields. Children are quite fascinated by playful activities and colourful objects and also appreciate the playful moments. There are professional advisors who can help in developing a good playschool curriculum. It is advised to consult them because it is the first learning stage of the child and should not be dealt with.

Past workshops are available for viewing online at  mauirecovers.org/Lahaina .

The workshops are part of community engagement efforts for the long-term recovery plan for Lahaina, which includes collaborating with community members on their vision for recovery from the fire. Missouri governor says new public aid plan in the works for Chiefs, Royals stadiums

David A. Lieb

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said Thursday that he expects the state to put together an aid plan by the end of the year to try to keep the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals from being lured across state lines to new stadiums in Kansas.

Missouri's renewed efforts come after Kansas approved a plan last week that would finance up to 70% of the cost of new stadiums for the professional football and baseball teams.

Recommended Videos

“We’re going to make sure that we put the best business deal we can on the line,” Parson told reporters while hosting the Chiefs' two most recent Super Bowl trophies at the Capitol, where fans lined up for photos.

“Look, I can’t blame Kansas for trying,” Parson added. “You know, if I was probably sitting there, I’d be doing the same thing. But at the end of the day, we’re going to be competitive.”

The Chiefs and Royals have played for over 50 years in side-by-side stadiums built in eastern Kansas City, drawing fans from both states in the split metropolitan area. Their stadium leases run until 2031. But Royals owner John Sherman has said the team won't play at Kauffman Stadium beyond the 2030 season, expressing preference for a new downtown stadium.

Questions about the teams' future intensified after Jackson County, Missouri, voters in April rejected a sales tax that would have helped fund a more than $2 billion downtown ballpark district for the Royals and an $800 million renovation of the Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium.

The tax plan faced several headwinds. Some Royals fans preferred the teams' current site. Others opposed the tax. And still others had concerns about the new stadium plans, which changed just weeks ahead of the vote.

The emergence of Kansas as an alternative raised the stakes for Missouri officials and repeated a common pattern among professional sports teams, which often leverage one site against another in an effort to get the greatest public subsidies for new or improved stadiums.

Sports teams are pushing a new wave of stadium construction across the U.S., going beyond basic repairs to derive fresh revenue from luxury suites, dining, shopping and other developments surrounding their stadiums.

On Monday, the city council of Charlotte, North Carolina, approved public funds to help fuel an $800 million renovation of the Carolina Panthers' football stadium. On Tuesday, the city of Jacksonville, Florida, approved a $1.25 billion stadium renovation plan for the NFL's Jaguars that splits the cost between the city and team.

Many economists assert that while stadiums may boost tax revenue in their immediate area, they tend to shift consumer spending away from other entertainment and seldom generate enough new economic activity to offset all the public subsidies.

Parson said “the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are big business,” comparing them to large companies that have received public aid such as Boeing, Ford and General Motors. But he added that any deal “has to work out on paper, where it’s going to be beneficial to the taxpayers of Missouri.”

“I think by the end of this year, we’re going to have something in place” to propose for the stadiums, Parson said.

Missouri’s still undefined plan likely would require legislative approval, but Parson said he doesn’t anticipate calling a special legislative session before his term ends in January. That means any plan developed by Parson’s administration in partnership with Kansas City area officials also would need the support of the next governor and a new slate of lawmakers.

Now that Kansas has enacted a financing law, discussions between the sports teams and the Kansas Department of Commerce could start at any time, but the agency has no timeline for finishing a deal, spokesperson Patrick Lowry said Thursday.

Associated Press writer John Hanna in Topeka, Kansas, contributed to this report.
