Leadership Case Study Inspires and Motivates Others to High Performance

Profile image of kunal shankar

MTCR is a leading company in the development and manufacturing of a broad range of custom hardware solutions. The company prides itself and is well known for being refreshingly honest and straightforward in its dealings with customers and employees, and in its ability to deliver difficult projects on time. Sally has been a senior manager at MTCR for four years and leads a team in the custom services area of the company. In a recent 360-degree survey, Sally scored above average (at the 70 th percentile) in the competency, Inspires and Motivates Others to High Performance. Her report also indicated that her manager, peers, and direct reports saw this competency as a critical one for someone in her position. Some of the written comments in her survey indicated that if she demonstrated and applied this competency more often, it would have a significant positive impact on her success on the job. For these reasons, she's focusing her personal leadership development over the next year on this competency. David is one of Sally's direct reports who has worked at MTCR for more than nine years and whose historical performance has been excellent. It's generally known among the team that David doesn't have as strong a technical background as most of his colleagues. At the same time it's also well known that he has a very efficient work style and puts in any extra hours needed to meet personal and team goals. He transferred from a different group and joined Sally's team almost two years ago. Unfortunately, David has had several performance setbacks on the job over the last three months. One of them revolved around some critical missed assignments and late deliveries. Sally had assigned him two projects with some stretch goals that were not easy for David to hit, but had made those assignments specifically to give him development opportunities he had requested. This approach was typical for her, as she generally has a positive approach and displays confidence in her team members. She had worked together with him on his plans, and

Leadership, as modeled in the life of David, is a function of community. Leadership structures respond to community needs (safety, wellbeing, opportunity, care, infrastructure, etc.) and goals (products or services generated) in a way that amplifies the gifts, abilities, and skills resident in the community and in the absence of gifts, abilities, and skills it recruits individuals who meet the need. David exemplifies leadership via two differential characteristics i.e., faith and perspective. These differential characteristics set biblical leadership apart from other models in both its character and its capacity to generate consistently healthy results. Hence, in developing leaders it is important to consider how to nurture faith and perspective in the behavior of emerging leaders. By healthy, I mean that the results of differential leadership enhance the wellbeing of followers so that the community is characterized by justice and equity.

Many organizations today are deploying project teams to deliver various services or resolve different problems as they recognize the team performance is always exceeding the individual outputs combined. According to Project Management Institute (PMI), project manager's leadership skills are deemed important as they help achieving the project goals set by stakeholders. However, there is lack of study whether a project manager's leadership roles can improve team satisfaction, team effectiveness and project performance concurrently (Cohen & Bailey, 1997) or following a certain pattern of dependencies. This study developed a research model based on research works conducted by Cohen and Bailey (1997) and Yukl (2010) to empirically analyze how leadership roles are influencing team satisfaction, team effectiveness and project performance. Result showed that when a project manager is demonstrating his or her leadership roles more frequently, the project team becomes more effective. When the team effectiveness increases, this will lead to higher team satisfaction and improve project performance. Moreover, when the project team becomes more satisfied, it will also directly increase the project performance. However, execution of the leadership roles by project manager will not directly influence the team satisfaction and project performance. Discussion, conclusion, limitation and future research are also included in this article.

Language is a human attribution which allows communication among us. However, how language is acquired is a mystery which several theories have tried to decipher. Noam Chomsky proposed the theory of Universal Grammar which produced a remarkable impact in the study of language acquisition both L1 and L2. The influence has reached other fields such as psychology and computer parsing of language. (Cook & Newson, 2007:1). This essay supports the idea the UG has a major influence in second language acquisition based on the evidence some researchers have found considering that research conducted on UG is more accurate than other kinds of SLA investigation (Krashen, 2009: 260). Nevertheless, this does not mean that UG is the only factor which is involved in second language acquisition but the most significant.
