pe virtual assignments

Virtual PE is becoming an increasingly popular way to provide physical education to students. It offers a unique combination of curriculum and technology that can be tailored to meet the needs of any student. Virtual PE is a great way to engage students in physical activity while teaching important physical education concepts. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of virtual PE, the curriculum opportunities, and the technology that makes it possible.

Virtual PE in the Age of Virtual Schools

Virtual schools are here to stay. In fact, there has been  a rise in virtual school enrollment  following the pandemic. As a result, many families opt for a virtual learning experience, and public school districts, charter schools, and private schools are all embracing the demand.

No matter what type of school students are enrolled in, children of all ages need physical activity and physical education. The  CDC recommends 60 minutes of activity  because of the well-documented benefits of physical activity on physical health and mental health. Therefore, whether students are in elementary school, middle school, or high school, they need regular “moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.”

But past just physical activity , students need to learn the essential skills and strategies to exercise. Students can develop these critical lifelong fitness skills through physical education classes. Physical education is an integral part of any school, so virtual PE is a necessary subject within any virtual school.

A person stretches at home next to laptop.

Virtual PE – Two Major Questions

When it comes to planning a virtual PE class, there are two major questions that schools must ask:

1) What curriculum and lesson plans can students do virtually?

In an in-person physical education class, physical educators can provide equipment and resources for students to complete a variety of workouts. But with virtual PE, students need a simple way to exercise with the limited equipment they have access to at home or no equipment at all.

For example, each student might get a jump rope or yoga mat at home, but not everyone can get weights or other equipment. Therefore, virtual PE must have a complete course offering of lesson plans that can be achieved and completed at home with limited or no equipment.

2) Is the virtual PE class going to be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both?

If virtual PE is going to be synchronous learning, there is still an obvious element of technology needed for PE teachers and students to work together.

But if virtual PE is going to be any amount asynchronous, then PE teachers need to find a way to track and monitor the completion of course content for students at home.

5 Free Virtual Physical Education Lessons

Here are five free virtual physical education lessons that are excellent for any fitness level. All of these lessons come from PLT4M’s library of physical education curriculum and are perfect for an online PE lesson.

A few notes about these lessons:

No equipment required

A soft surface is nice to have (yoga mat, towel, or even a run)

All of these different virtual PE lessons assume a basic understanding of fitness (If students still need to participate in an intro to fitness program, don’t worry!  We have a full slate of virtual PE lessons for a general intro to fitness .)

Bodyweight Bootcamp

Bodyweight bootcamp is a high-intensity interval training class for all fitness levels. This program guides students through a full-body follow-along workout. With a combination of strength training and cardio, this program is designed to help students find new boundaries that challenge muscular endurance and strength.

This yoga session begins with a guided warm-up and an opportunity for students to check in mentally and physically to the day’s lesson. Our yoga session will follow a traditional yoga flow and move throughout an entire 30-minute workout. We will also introduce 2-3 movement/pose variations embedded directly within the longer flows.

Boxing is a total body workout! Odd rounds (1,3,5,7) consist of boxing exercises focusing on offense, defense, and footwork. Students will be instructed to practice different combinations and can practice at their own pace or follow along with Sean, our instructor. Even rounds (2,4,6,8) consist of bodyweight circuits. The 8th round wraps up with a core cashout.

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that is a great full-body workout. Pilates focuses on control while enhancing balance, flexibility, and the mind-body connection. This introductory program provides an excellent challenge to all major muscle groups, particularly the core.

Dance Fitness

Let’s turn up the music and have some fun! This workout aims to provide every student with an engaging and welcoming introduction to the basics of dance fitness. We seek to introduce this form of cardio and dance fitness through a fully-developed lesson plan that allows students to learn new dance moves while getting their heart rates up and smiling!

Technology’s Role in Virtual PE

While PE teachers could access workouts on a random youtube channel, virtual PE needs the ability to deliver workouts and track activity.

Just like google classroom can help monitor activity and learning for other subjects, PE teachers can utilize PLT4M to track what is getting done at home. For example, when students log in to PLT4M and complete a workout, they will get credit for their virtual physical education lessons. This allows virtual PE to be an asynchronous subject.

And while there will be synchronous components of virtual PE, by utilizing PLT4M technology, schools can guarantee a high-quality physical education class for all middle school and high school students.

Key Takeaways on Virtual PE

Virtual PE is so important because it directly aligns with what students will see after graduating. Teaching students skills to take care of their physical health and mental health at home makes them more likely to continue pursuing fitness after their school days are over.

Lifelong fitness starts by empowering students to see exercise as a habit and practice they can do anywhere. Through virtual PE, students can learn that they can still stay healthy and physically active even without access to a gym or fitness center.

Yes, PLT4M has a full slate of middle school PE lesson plans, high school physical education lesson plans, and workouts that do require equipment. In this article, we featured no equipment lessons and programs. But if students have access to weights or a gym, we have plenty of options for them as well!

16 Zoom PE Games (That Actually Work!)

It’s certainly not easy to inject movement and action into Zoom Games, but it definitely can be done!

I’ve come up with my favorite 16 active PE games for kids that are ideal for any kind of virtual session such as via Zoom.

These games all involve the following qualities:

-They are active, and yet they can all be done more or less by standing in one place. This means kids get exercise, but they don’t have to move around the room, with all the danger of bumping into things which that involves

-No equipment is needed! This is for both the kids or the leader

-They are fantastic for kids of all ages

-They are fun-filled, active, and enjoyable – with an emphasis on movement, listening and team-building

These games are great for whatever types of PE sessions you are running – for schools, clubs, or whatever else.

Research suggests there are many advantages of online learning. (Source)

So, let’s dive into the ultimate 16 Zoom PE games (that actually work!)

PE Zoom games teacher in action

1. Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)

Invent three movements and demonstrate these for the group. For example, a cowboy twirling a lariat above their head, a camp counselor spelling out YMCA, and a college athlete throwing a fastball from the pitcher’s mound.

Then assign everyone a partner (or have them find their own from the field currently available on their screen).

The challenge of this activity is to activate your ESP, that is, your extra-sensory perception – the ability to read your partner’s mind.

On the count of three, everyone displays one of the three movements previously described, but not at random. Choose the movement that you think your partner is about to do. Ready?

Get the same move? You’ve activated your ESP!

ESP is a very brief way of getting your audience up and moving, even if only for a minute or two. You can play multiple rounds of the activity, and switch partners.

2. Figures Of Eight

The simple idea behind this game is that the players are going to be standing in front of their screen and attempt to make a figure of eight with different parts of their bodies.

For example, you can make an eight with:

-Your finger

-Your tongue

As a further extension, players could sign their names using various body parts.

3. Dance Counting

You need some sort of loud pumping disco music – ideally something without any words.

Get the children to stand up in front of their computer, then teach them a simple dance routine. It is probably best to stick to about four moves to start with. For example, arms to the right, arms to the left, arms up high, arms down low.

Now give them any number between 1-8, for example, 4 is a good one to start with.

So you’re all going to do the dance routine – but every move you will do it 4 times.

So off you go – arms to the right four times, arms to the left four times, etc.

Then give them a different number, for example, ‘six’.

Repeat the process again, this time with six of each move.

The smaller numbers are actually harder in this game, with ‘one’ being the trickiest!

The children sit down to begin this game .

The idea here is that you ask the children a question. If the answer for them is ‘yes’ then they jump up on their feet, and then sit back down straight away. This is the ‘bob up’ movement.

You might ask them, ‘Do you like tomatoes?’ The ones that do will bob up.

Ways of extending the game are:

-Children ask the questions

-Bob up and do a funky pre-designated move, such as do a funny dance or a silly face.

5. Animal Copy Cat

One child is ‘on’ for this game. They are the ‘cat’ that everyone else is going to try to copy.

This child then moves, on the spot, like some kind of animal. For example, like an elephant. They swing their trunk and stamp their feet.

The person that is ‘on’ will switch things up about every twenty seconds, by trying out a different animal.

Everyone else tries to copy.

Then switch to someone else being ‘on’. They try a new animal.

A variation of this game is that the person who is ‘on’ can also say ‘freeze’ at any given moment. Freeze in your animal pose. Anyone that they see moving is ‘out.’

6. Transformers

Lots of children are passionately excited by vehicles and transformers, and this is another activity that can be done more or less on the spot .

There is of course lots of research about the importance of listening games in development. (Source)

The children are now transformers. They get to shape-shift into all sorts of vehicles. Nominate either a child or the adult to be ‘on’ and decide which vehicles to pick.

Some good ideas for vehicles are:

i) Helicopter – arms spinning round above your head

iii) Train – using ‘chugging arms’

iv) Racing cars – running in place fast

v) Monster truck – make yourself as big as possible, and chug on the spot

vi) Plane – arms out, ‘swooping’ (on the spot)

7. Mr Men/Little Miss Game

The simple idea of this is that the players pretend to be different characters from the Little Miss or Mr Men books. They do the movements on the spot.

Some good ones to try include:

Mr Tall – walk on the spot as high as possible

Mr Grumpy – stamp with an angry face

Little Miss Tiny – Curl up like a ball

If they can think of their own ideas then great! If not, just come up with some as the adult, and maybe demo some simple ways of moving like that character.

8. Child-Friendly Yoga

Incorporating a few of the easier yoga movements in virtual learning is a sure-fire way to boost engagement, and incorporate mindfulness into your session.

The Alphabet Stretch invites participants to use their bodies to create each letter of the alphabet in a smoothly flowing succession, from A to Z. Participants can move at their own speed, and define their own movements.

Household Yoga consists of slow movements created to mimic household activities, such as reaching high up on the top shelf to retrieve a box of cereal, or simultaneously washing a window with one hand while stirring a pot of soup with the other.

The participants can invent their own moves. The activity continues until everyone has shared at least one household yoga movement.

Child-friendly animal yoga moves can be used with children of all ages. Some good examples are:

Giraffe Pose

Stand with one foot in front of the other. Reach up high with one arm above you (this is the giraffe’s neck). Then bend slowly down, touching your front foot with the arm that had been high up, before rising again to the original position.

Turtle Pose

Lie on your back, with your knees pulled into your chin. Rock gently forwards and backward like a turtle in its shell.

Lie on your front, with your hands flat on the floor under your shoulders. Push upwards until your arms are straight, arching your back.

Child doing warrior pose yoga in garden

9. Action Counting Dance

This is a particularly good game for younger children, though older ones might like it too.

Put some kind of pumping tune on again; one with no words is probably best.

Pick some kind of action, and do it to the music as you count.

With older ones I always go to eight. Do eight actions, then move onto another movement.

So, you might do eight star jumps, then eight reaches up high.

With younger children, where they are still learning how to count, I (paradoxically) often count higher than eight. We just count as far as we can while doing the action.

Then start back at one with a different action.

The numbers are more of an emphasis with the younger ones, as they are still learning how to practice counting.

With the older ones, the emphasis is more on the exercise, with the sequence to eight just helping to give a structure to the activity.

10. Bean Game

This is a classic PE game that works really well on Zoom (as lots of these other games are).

In this game, the children are going to pretend to be different types of beans.

This is another game that is fantastic for listening skills in particular.

The leader is going to be saying the names of different beans. The children are then going to try to move like the particular beans, as they move on the spot in their space.

Some common instructions for this game are:

Runner bean – the kids run in place

Sprouting bean – stand on tip-toes, with arms stretched high in the air. Twist your hands and arms as if they are growing

Jelly bean – wobble like a jelly

Baked bean – sit down on the floor

Beans on toast – lie down

Chilli bean – shiver! (obviously, this is a ‘pun’ on the word Chilli)

Broad bean – Put your arms out as wide as possible

French bean – Say, ‘Bonjour!

Start simple (as is wise for all of these games). Just show them about three different actions, to begin with.

When they are good at using those, you can then expand into different actions.

Potentially a child could lead this game after they have got used to it.

11. Action Stories

This is a fantastic game for combining literacy, storytelling, and PE all in one big melting-pot.

It’s a simple idea! The leader makes up a story. In the story, there will be lots of actions.

For example, you might start, ‘One day the big giant went stamping across his cave.’

Everyone pretends to stamp like a giant.

‘He beat his chest!’

Everyone beats their chest.

‘He rolled the giant stone out of the cave doorway.’

Everyone rolls the stone.

‘He saw a unicorn galloping across the field towards him.’

The kids pretend to be galloping unicorns.

Continue like this. If the children can offer their own ideas, then that is fantastic! The more wacky and crazy the story goes the better.

12. Traffic Lights

This is another really classic listening game.

In this one, the children are going to pretend to be cars. The younger ones, in particular, can do all the pretend steering wheel driving if they like!

The leader is going to give them instructions based on the colors of traffic lights. The children are going to move in a pre-agreed way whenever you say a color.

So, some simple instructions to start with are:

Green – Go! Jog in place

Red – Stop

Yellow – walk on the spot

This is the best way to start – with just the three traffic light colors.

When the kids get the hang of this, then you can move onto the following ideas:

Parking Lot (or car-park) – Lie down on the floor

Freeway – Run really fast in place

Honk the horn – Beep! Beep!

Roundabout – Go around in a circle

Vary the speed of giving instructions to very quick (for maximum changes of movement and hilarity), to quite slow (for a calmer and easier version of the game).

13. HIIT Session

This is a fantastic game for kids of all ages, and of course adults as well potentially .

In this, you are basically leading the kids in an on-the-spot training circuit.

Pick some moves that will work well for their particular age group.

For younger ones, you could pick moves like:

-Jumping in place

-Reach up, reach down

-Jumping like a frog

-Star jumps

-Reach to one side, reach to other

For older kids, you can do things like:

And all that kind of thing.

You can structure the session with time intervals. So it could be 20 seconds doing an activity, then 20 seconds off.

Pick about 3-4 activities, and do them in a sequence. Then repeat for at least a second rep (and potentially 3-4 for older kids).

14. Simon Says

Of course, pretty much everyone knows how to play this one.

Simply say, ‘Simon says,…’ and then say an action, like ‘put your hands on your heads.’

If you say ‘Simon Says’ then they all do it; if you don’t say ‘Simon Says’ then they don’t do it. It’s as simple as that!

You can spice this game up with variations, including:

-Simon Says Adventure. Make up an adventure as part of the game. For example, ‘Simon Says wade through the swamp.’

-Simon Says Theme. Pick a theme, for example, superheroes, and move like them.

15. Animal Freeze

Nominate one person to be the ‘leader’ in this game.

This is a bit like musical statues, but with a bit of fun, movement added!

Have some music that everyone is able to hear on Zoom.

Pick an animal, for example, an elephant. Everyone dances with big floppy ears, and a long trunk!

When the music stops – freeze in position!

The ‘leader’ can then say who was last to freeze, and also anyone that they can see moving. They are out.

Then start the music again, with a different animal.

16. Captain’s Coming

This is another classic game that is great for Zoom .

It combines imagination and physical activity.

The children are all pirates on a pretend boat. Give them different instructions which they act out. Classic instructions include:

Row the boat – Pretend to be rowing with oars

Scrub the deck – Get on your knees and pretend to scrub the floor

Captain’s coming – Stand up straight and salute

Swim to shore – Do the front crawl

Into the hammock – Lie down on the floor

Lift the cannonballs – Lift up those incredibly heavy cannonballs, with wobbling legs and straining faces.

With these games in your locker, you can inject all the movement, fun, and engagement into your online PE sessions as is humanly possible.

  • Lesson Plan Ideas for Teaching PE Remotely [Interactive]

Picture of Maria Corte

This PE podcast will share many home learning lessons and how to teach those lessons without overwhelming their students. Maria Corte is a Physical Education teacher at Mesa High School in Mesa, Arizona.

[0:02] Well, so here we are a bunch of PE teachers who are used to teaching and in big spaces working alongside our students. We were used to teaching on the move, managing on the move, motivating on the move. We’re on our feet all day, wishing we could somehow stop and sit down just for a minute. We find ourselves now in our living rooms, teaching remotely through our phones and computers. It’s amongst the craziest thing I’ve seen in over 26 years of teaching.

[0:53] So what I want to talk about today is online learning and that is the hot topic of the day of the month it’s looking like and maybe even more, unfortunately. But what I’m noticing is there’s just so much information. It’s so new and everybody is just working so hard and so diligently on trying to figure this all out and with that becomes a lot of confusion. For example, just the fact online learning. I’ve heard it called distance learning. I’ve heard it called remote learning, homeschooling, we can’t even get the title straight. So you can imagine the receiving end from the students on what they’re experiencing right now. Look, one thing I know for sure about PE teachers is that we’re highly motivated and highly competitive and, and it is prevalent in what I’m seeing from my colleagues, from PE teachers around the state of Arizona, from what I see on Twitter, from PE teachers all over the country, all over the world. Everybody is working so hard to try to figure this out and they’re coming up with just fantastic things to do with their students and very creative things to do with their students from home.

[2:07] But how do we keep it all straight? How do we take what we need and not overwhelm the students because in my opinion, it’s a little overwhelming for me, there’s so much stuff and I don’t even know where to start and I don’t even know how to share it with my students at this point. So that’s what I want to talk about today a little bit.

Keep It Simple for Students

[2:30] Before we talk about some of the great things that we could be doing from home I do want to just maybe talk about some key points that at least I’m going to be doing or reminding myself with my students. The first thing is we got to stay light whenever we’re communicating with the students stay positive, stay light, we don’t want to be heavy at this point they got enough to worry about. So we just want to to give them little reminders about some just wellness topics of washing their hands and staying safe and and practice the social distancing. But also make sure, again, that we don’t overwhelm them with too much information. I would keep it and I am trying to keep it very simple post one thing a day. And the one thing a day that I am posting is short, concise, simple, like go outside for 10 minutes and maybe try that, you know, maybe three to six times a day, or tell them to do something on their own anything that they’d like to do for about 10-15 minutes in the day and maybe do that a couple times. Maybe they want to walk their dog or they want to play with chalk or they want to go walk around the block a few times.

A Few Tips I’ve Learned

[3:51] So with that said, with those few little tips, there are some just fantastic things that I’m seeing on Twitter. One thing I’m seeing is challenges. I think those are good a lot of PE teachers are saying there’s there are showing them there’s a water bottle challenge or a push up challenge or a crunches challenge, plank challenge. There’s all kinds I’m seeing a common thread of that. There’s also videos of themselves. I think the students would really enjoy seeing you in front of their TV screen or phone. There is workouts from people are posting from YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, lots of videos there. I’m also seeing some really cute videos of PE teachers doing little fitness ideas with their own children. That kind of makes it personal too, also some easy bodyweight exercises using household items. All that is just great, great stuff. I’m keeping it real simple. I’m emailing my students using the platform that our district uses and I’m just saying good morning each day and I may even just type up little idea of a lesson forum or clip one video. But again, we don’t need to stress out on this. You don’t need to be a professional techie at had this time. Let’s just stick with what we know best and that is motivating kids to be active.

[5:20] So remember, keep it simple, keep it light. Try to ride this out as positively as you can. Again, remember, this is temporary. And I know all of us are really looking forward to getting back into the gym back outside, back onto the court wherever you teach. And, and let’s be safe out there. Thanks so much. Bye bye.

thanks for the different topics and thoughts on how to teach PE

This is a good reminder. Keeping it simple, safe and light. Staying positive is the key to keeping Distance learning fun and entertaining to the students.

1. ai enhancements in microsoft teams for education .

New features in Microsoft Teams for Education , a powerful communication app for schools, are coming to all educators starting later this month at no additional cost. They leverage AI to draft content like rubrics, assignment instructions, personalized reading passages, and learning objectives, all while keeping the educator in control.

  • Create rubrics in Assignments: With generative AI integrated into Assignments, you just need to enter what you want the rubric to assess, and Assignments will suggest criteria for you and complete the rubric for you.
  • Create instructions in Assignments: Get multiple suggestions for how to enrich your content, including adding more details, adding learning objectives, emphasizing key concepts, and even ideas for making your assignments more interesting. You’re in control—after the content is created, you can make edits and generate different options.
  • Passage generation in Reading Progress: You can generate a passage directly in Reading Progress and leverage insights to personalize it based on the needs of your class and individual students. With passage generation, you can select a topic, age, length, and language, and easily adjust the complexity of the passage once it has been generated.
  • Comprehension questions generation in Reading Progress:  You can generate comprehension questions based on a specific reading passage. Choose the number of questions and then review them, making any preferred edits, before publishing them to students.

We’re excited to introduce Emotion Clusters, a new feature in Reflect that offers additional ways to tailor instruction and support learners’ needs and interests.

Inspired by natural elements, Emotion Clusters group emotions into 11 clusters based on their qualities and associated regulation strategies: Fire, Whirlwind, Wave, Sunshine, Rain, Rock, Fog, Desert, Cloud, Lake, and Earth. Observing clusters over time simplifies understanding, classification, and response to emotional trends, making it easier to support individual learner needs and group dynamics.

Anne frank initiative welcomes over 250 clear creek amana eighth graders to university of iowa campus.

Kirsten Kumpf Baele speaking in front of group of eighth grade students from Clear Creek Amana in auditorium

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Anne Frank Initiative (AFI) , an International Programs affinity group, welcomed 250+ eighth graders from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School. A strong mission of the AFI is to create outreach opportunities to share Anne Frank’s story, spirit, and her humanitarian message with our youngest generation. Some CCA students have read portions of Anne Frank’s diary during the spring semester. The AFI is directed by Kirsten Kumpf Baele, lecturer in the University of Iowa (UI) Department of German.

“As part of the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum at CCA, Tollie Lancaster and I were able to teach the students about the Holocaust,” said Lindsay Herr, eighth grade ELA teacher and one of the organizers of the event. “We are honored that Dr. Kirsten Kumpf Baele partnered with us and took the time to teach our students about Anne Frank, and we are excited they were able to meet with and learn from other University of Iowa professors and current University of Iowa students.”

The middle school students began their day with an introduction to Anne Frank, her legacy, and her special connection with Iowa. Throughout the morning, students were divided into breakout sessions which ranged from a virtual reality tour of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and Little Free Library design, to artificial intelligence, writing and identity, and learning about German/Jewish heritage in Iowa City. They also had a tour of the Iowa campus.

At the end the day, students gathered at the Anne Frank sapling on the Pentacrest where Andrew Dahl, the head UI arborist, talked about the white horse chestnut tree, the 13th sapling to be planted in the United States.

“This annual engagement with Clear Creek Amana brings eighth grade students face-to-face with pieces of history that most of them have only encountered through educational texts,” said Mallory Hellman, director of the Iowa Youth Writing Project and AFI advisory committee member. “By visiting the Anne Frank sapling, walking a path of significant locations in Iowa City's Jewish history (and present!), and learning of Anne Frank's Iowan pen-pal , students cement a lived connection between Anne's story and their own.”

The AFI is committed to investigating Anne Frank’s literary contributions, her ongoing legacy, and all that she represents in a more globalized, international, and contemporary context.

“Iowa has a special connection to Anne Frank and her story,” remarked Natoshia Askelson, associate professor in the UI College of Public Health and AFI advisory committee member. “The AFI works to highlight and strengthen that connection. It is vital that Iowans understand how interconnected all our stories and lives are, so that we can prevent violence.”

Organizers of this event included AFI Director Kirsten Kumpf Baele; Lindsay Herr, CCA eighth grade ELA teacher; AFI Advisory Committee members Natoshia Askelson, Carl Follmer, Mallory Hellman, Shereena Honary, and Ana Laura Leyser; and other UI faculty, staff, and students including Andrew Dahl, Glenn Ehrstine, Colleen Kollasch, and Kevin Zihlman.

International Programs  (IP) at the University of Iowa (UI) is committed to enriching the global experience of UI students, faculty, staff, and the general public by leading efforts to promote internationally oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement.  IP provides support for international students and scholars, administers scholarships and assistance for students who study, intern, or do research abroad, and provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for faculty engaged in international research. IP shares their stories through various media, and by hosting multiple public engagement activities each year.

  • Anne Frank Initiative

International Programs at the University of Iowa supports the right of all individuals to live freely and to live in peace. We condemn all acts of violence based on race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and perceived national or cultural origin. In affirming its commitment to human dignity, International Programs strongly upholds the values expressed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights .

NASA SCoPE Engages and Empowers at AbSciCon 2024 with Gaming Activities and Childcare Support

At the AbSciCon conference held from May 6-10, 2024 in Providence, RI, NASA SCoPE (SMD Community of Practice for Engagement) left a lasting impression with its engaging activities centered around gaming. The NASA SCoPE exhibit hall booth was a vibrant hub featuring three digital game consoles, where nearly 150 of the 900 conference attendees, had the opportunity to learn about NASA Science Activation, the NASA SCoPE project, and avenues for proposing funded projects for educational outreach. The booth provided a dynamic environment for networking and exploring the exciting prospects within NASA's educational outreach initiatives.

A highlight of the conference was the game night, cohosted with the NASA Astrobiology Guild . This event brought together 28 science content experts and education specialists for a competitive and educational game of Astrobiobound ! Participants were immersed in gameplay that illustrated NASA's priorities and mission planning processes, culminating in an exciting "launch" sequence. This game night not only fostered a spirit of friendly competition but also showcased how educational tools like Astrobiobound! can effectively communicate complex scientific concepts.

In addition to these interactive gaming activities, NASA SCoPE proudly sponsored the conference's childcare program, making the conference more accessible for early career scientists and those from marginalized communities. This initiative significantly reduced the cost of childcare for applicants, benefiting approximately 20 attendees. By alleviating this barrier, NASA SCoPE enabled more science content experts to participate in the conference, fostering a more inclusive and diverse scientific community.

Overall, NASA SCoPE's efforts at AbSciCon 2024 successfully combined education, engagement, and accessibility, demonstrating a commitment to reducing barriers and supporting the next generation of scientists.

NASA SCoPE is supported by NASA under cooperative agreement award number 80NSSC21M0006 and is part of NASA’s Science Activation Portfolio. Learn more about how Science Activation connects NASA science experts, real content, and experiences with community leaders to do science in ways that activate minds and promote deeper understanding of our world and beyond: https://science.nasa.gov/learn

The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view.
