Regardless of this commonality, both types of review vary significantly. The following table provides a detailed explanation as well as the differences between systematic and literature reviews.

Structured literature reviews – A guide for students

This is a step-by-step guide aimed at Master's students undertaking a structured literature review as part of their Master's thesis.

There are several different kinds of literature reviews, but any literature review typically includes an extensive literature search. Whenever a systematic approach is used, the literature search features a methodical step-by-step procedure. However, as a Master's student, it might not be possible to fulfill all the criteria of a systematic review when writing a literature review-based thesis; you should rather do a structured literature review, which will include only certain aspects of the systematic review methodology.

In this guide we will go through the different steps of a structured literature review and provide tips on how to make your search strategy more structured and extensive. Additionally, make sure to follow any programme and course specific requirements.

Step 1: Formulate and delimit your research question

  • It will be much easier for you to perform a structured information search if you first define and delimit your research question in a clear way.
  • One way to define and structure your question is to break it down into different parts .
  • PICO and PEO are two different frameworks that can be used for breaking down a research question into different parts.
  • You also need to define the most important key concepts of your research question.

The formulation of your research question is partly connected to what kind of literature review you are doing. This article by Maria J. Grant and Andrew Booth usefully compares different kinds of reviews . While a systematic literature review is usually grounded in a clearly delimited and structured question, a scoping review may, for instance, feature a wider problem formulation. The wider a research question is, the larger number of search hits it tends to generate.

To be able to perform a literature review, you need to consider a subject area in which there seems to be a sufficiently large number of original research studies. Therefore, it may be a good idea to test search a database for previous research on the subject while you are trying to formulate and delimit your research question.

One way to structure your research question is to break it down into different parts. A well-delimited question often consists of three to four different parts. PICO and PEO are two examples of frameworks that can help you identify and define your research question.

  • PICO ( P opulation, I ntervention, C omparison, O utcome) is primarily used for quantitative research questions.
  • PEO ( P opulation, E xposure, O utcome) is primarily used for qualitative research questions.

Structuring your research question in accordance with a framework, such as PICO or PEO, will also help you decide on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of your literature review.

After you have delimited your research question, you also need to identify the key concepts that make up your question. Based on these key concepts, you will create " search blocks " that you will use to organise your search terms.

Step 2: Find search terms and create search blocks

  • Test searching is a good way to investigate the terminology of a subject area and find search terms.
  • Reading key articles can help you gather additional search terms for your final search strategy.
  • Find subject headings  for PubMed with the help of the US National Library of Medicine's MeSH database.
  • Find& free-text search terms by investigating what words that occur in the title and abstract of relevant articles.
  • A good way of achieving a structured final search query is to arrange your search terms into search blocks ; these blocks should arise from the key concepts of your research question.

While working on a literature review-based thesis, you will need to search for articles on several occasions. In the beginning of your project, it is often good to do a couple of unstructured and simple search queries, so-called test searches, in academic databases. This way you are off to a good start, as test searching helps you investigate the terminology of your subject area and find relevant search terms. While the final search strategy is typically reported in full, you don't need to present your test queries in your thesis.

Try to find a couple of key articles, that is, articles that correspond to the type of studies that you are planning to include in your review. Use key articles to gather additional search terms for your final search strategy. Analyse the terminology of your key articles by examining what subject headings (MeSH terms, etc.) that the articles have been tagged with and what words that occur in the titles and abstracts.

Test search - find keywords and narrow down your topic

To retrieve as many relevant studies as possible, you will need to include free-text search terms as well as subject headings in your final search strategy. Free-text search terms are words that occur in the article's title and abstract – words used by the authors themselves. Subject headings are subject-related words that an article is tagged with when the article is added to the database.

  • In PubMed , articles are tagged with MeSH terms ( Me dical  S ubject  H eadings). You can look up and browse MeSH terms in the US National Library of Medicine's  MeSH database .
  • Databases such as CINAHL , PsycInfo , ERIC , and Sociological Abstracts  have their own subject heading lists; look up subject headings in each database's subject heading list.
  • There are also so-called free-text databases, such as Web of Science . These databases lack subject heading lists. Hence, when searching a free-text database, you can only use free-text search terms.

An effective way to increase the structure of your final search strategy is to arrange your search terms in so-called  search blocks . Create your search blocks based on the key concepts of your research question.

Step 3: Search in a structured way

  • To get a comprehensive search result, you will need to search for articles in  several different databases .
  • Your search strategy should be as uniform as possible in every database, but you may have to  adapt your use of subject headings .
  • As you search the databases, combine your search terms and blocks with the help of  AND  and  OR .
  • Save time by  documenting your search queries .

When doing a literature review-based thesis it is often wise to use at least two different databases. Many databases overlap, but may also contain unique content. At KI it is common for Master's students to use PubMed and Web of Science when doing a structured literature review as part of their Master's thesis. Depending on your research question, other databases may also be appropriate and useful. Read more about the most frequently used databases at KI .

Your search strategy should be as uniform as possible in every database. However, as mentioned in Step 2, databases may use different subject headings, and some databases only let you use free-text search terms. This means that you need to adapt your use of subject headings depending on the database.

Example: How subject headings may differ between databases 

If you want to search for articles about day surgery in PubMed, you should use the MeSH term Ambulatory Surgical Procedures . However, if you also want to perform your search in a database such as CINAHL, you need to use the corresponding CINAHL Headings term instead: Ambulatory Surgery .

There are many different ways of searching databases. Most databases have one simple, basic Google-like search box and one advanced search form. One advantage of the latter is that combining search terms with AND and OR is usually easier in an advanced search form, especially if you will be using both AND and OR within the same search query. However, you can often combine search terms with AND and OR in a basic search box too, and in that case, you often isolate your different search blocks from each other by enclosing each block in parentheses.

Example: A search query that contains AND, OR, and parentheses

( inflammatory bowel diseases OR ulcerative colitis OR crohn disease) AND (adolescent OR child OR young adult OR teenager) AND (self-management OR self care OR self efficacy )

By choosing the advanced search form you will also be able to exert more control over your search process. The advanced search form lets you specify more closely and decide exactly how you want the database to interpret your search terms; this way you can make your search query more precise.

You should always document your search strategy in order to remember what search terms you have used, how these search terms have been combined, and whether you have applied any limits to your search. The easiest way to do this is to copy and paste your search history from the database into a text document. Also, academic databases often let you create a personal account, so that you may save your searches online.

Step 4: narrowing or broadening your search.

  • Briefly examine your search results to see if you need to narrow or broaden your search query.
  • Investigate whether your key articles are present in the search results.
  • By using the advanced search form you can improve your search.

Prepare yourself for having to modify and redo your search query several times, before deciding on your final search strategy. After you have combined all your search terms and made your very first database search, you should examine the search results and analyse whether your search query is able to generate the type of search hits that you are looking for.

Analyse your search results

  • Are all your key articles present in the search results, or are there some key articles that your search query is unable to retrieve?
  • Are you getting too few search hits ? Investigate why. Perhaps you need to remove one of your search blocks, add one or several synonyms within a search block, or search for parts of words by truncating one or several of your free-text search terms, in order to broaden your search ?
  • Does your search strategy generate too many non-relevant search hits that have nothing to do with your research question? Investigate why. Perhaps you need to add another search block, remove one of the synonyms from one of your search blocks, or search for phrases by enclosing one or several of your free-text terms in quotation marks, in order to narrow your search ?

It is important to remember that there is nothing wrong, per se, if your search query generates irrelevant hits. This is quite normal when performing a structured literature search. What's important is that your search strategy is able to retrieve the type of articles that you are looking for, and that you are not overwhelmed by the total number of hits (given the time frame of your thesis project).

We recommend that you use the advanced search form when improving your search strategy. By using the advanced search form, you will for example be able to specify which search fields your search terms must be present in.

Narrowing your search

  • After you have completed your search, you will need to go through all your search hits and select which articles to include in your review.
  • When selecting articles, read through the titles and abstracts of each article to decide its relevancy .
  • Check the quality of each study that you include in your review.
  • When checking the quality of articles, it is common to use critical appraisal worksheets or checklists .

Selecting articles

When you have completed and feel satisfied with your search, it is time to go through all the search hits and select which studies to include in your review. All relevant studies, that is, those studies that correspond to your research question and your previously set inclusion criteria, should be included. You decide on the relevancy of a study primarily by reading through the title and abstract. If you feel unsure, go through the whole article. You can describe your selection process with the help of a flow chart, such as the frequently used PRISMA flow diagram .

One of the challenges of systematic literature searches is that the search strategy should be exhaustive, but at the same time the number of search hits also needs to be kept within reasonable boundaries. A search query needs to be broad enough to retrieve all relevant studies, but on the other hand, this also means that a large portion of the search results will be irrelevant. Hence, even though your search strategy may have generated hundreds of hits, it is fine to only include ten to twenty articles in your review in the end.

Saving articles

If you create a personal account in a database it will be easier for you to save any references that you may find there. Another way of saving and organising article references is to use reference management software. There are several different reference management software, for example Endnote Online and Zotero.

Reviewing articles

When you have made your selection, you should critically examine the quality of all articles included in your review. The assessment is typically performed with the help of a critical appraisal guide or checklist. The purpose is to assess the reliability of the study results and whether there are any methodological flaws that may have impacted the results. Qualitative research articles are often reviewed with a focus on authenticity, credibility, and validity.

There are many different critical appraisal worksheets and checklists. Some examples are the SBU checklists for assessing the quality of randomized studies, observational studies, and qualitative research. In the course book How to do a systematic review in nursing there is a review guide that can be used for assessing different kinds of studies (both qualitative and quantitative); the original source is Caldwell, Henshaw & Taylor, 2011 .

Review worksheets and checklists contain criteria and questions that may help you identify flaws, errors, or bias. Sometimes different aspects of the study are scored separately. Later, all scores make up a final score that indicates whether the study is of high, medium, or low quality.

Many programmes and courses provide instructions on which checklists to use when reviewing articles, so check your course guidelines.

Step 6: Report your search strategy

  • Describe your search strategy in a manner that makes it possible for your readers to replicate the search and get the same results.
  • The search strategy is often presented in the form of a table .
  • Look at the search history to see what words and limits that you have used when searching a database.

An important aspect of doing a structured literature review is transparency. It has to be easy for your readers to follow what you did when you searched and selected the articles that you have included in your review. In the method section of your literature review you should describe how you searched different databases. This is also where you describe any manual searches that you did. Search strategies are commonly reported in the form of tables. Present one table for each database.

Most of us are familiar with the terms systematic review and literature review. Both review types synthesise evidence and provide summary information. So what are the differences? What does systematic mean? And which approach is best 🤔 ?

‘ Systematic ‘ describes the review’s methods. It means that they are transparent, reproducible and defined before the search gets underway. That’s important because it helps to minimise the bias that would result from cherry-picking studies in a non-systematic way. 

This brings us to literature reviews. Literature reviews don’t usually apply the same rigour in their methods. That’s because, unlike systematic reviews, they don’t aim to produce an answer to a clinical question. Literature reviews can provide context or background information for a new piece of research. They can also stand alone as a general guide to what is already known about a particular topic. 

Interest in systematic reviews has grown in recent years and the frequency of ‘systematic reviews’ in Google books has overtaken ‘literature reviews’ (with all the usual Ngram Viewer warnings – it searches around 6% of all books, no journals).

Let’s take a look at the two review types in more detail to highlight some key similarities and differences 👀.

🙋🏾‍♂️ What is a systematic review?

Systematic reviews ask a specific question about the effectiveness of a treatment and answer it by summarising evidence that meets a set of pre-specified criteria. 

The process starts with a research question and a protocol or research plan. A review team searches for studies to answer the question using a highly sensitive search strategy. The retrieved studies are then screened for eligibility using the inclusion and exclusion criteria (this is done by at least two people working independently). Next, the reviewers extract the relevant data and assess the quality of the included studies. Finally, the review team synthesises the extracted study data and presents the results. The process is shown in figure 2 .

The results of a systematic review can be presented in many ways and the choice will depend on factors such as the type of data. Some reviews use meta-analysis to produce a statistical summary of effect estimates. Other reviews use narrative synthesis to present a textual summary.

When is it appropriate to do a systematic review?

If you have a clinical question about the effectiveness of a particular treatment or treatments, you could answer it by conducting a systematic review. Systematic reviews in clinical medicine often follow the PICO framework, which stands for:

🙋🏻‍♀️ What is a literature review?

Literature reviews provide an overview of what is known about a particular topic. They evaluate the material, rather than simply restating it, but the methods used to do this are not usually prespecified and they are not described in detail in the review. The search might be comprehensive but it does not aim to be exhaustive. Literature reviews are also referred to as narrative reviews.

Literature reviews use a topical approach and often take the form of a discussion. Precision and replicability are not the focus, rather the author seeks to demonstrate their understanding and perhaps also present their work in the context of what has come before. Often, this sort of synthesis does not attempt to control for the author’s own bias. The results or conclusion of a literature review is likely to be presented using words rather than statistical methods.

When is it appropriate to do a literature review?

We’ve all written some form of literature review: they are a central part of academic research ✍🏾. Literature reviews often form the introduction to a piece of writing, to provide the context. They can also be used to identify gaps in the literature and the need to fill them with new research 📚.

  • Literature reviews take a thematic approach
  • They do not specify inclusion or exclusion criteria
  • They do not answer a clinical question
  • The conclusions might be influenced by the author’s own views

🙋🏽 Ok, but what is a systematic literature review?

A quick internet search retrieves a cool 200 million hits for ‘systematic literature review’. What strange hybrid is this 🤯🤯 ?

Systematic review methodology has its roots in evidence-based medicine but it quickly gained traction in other areas – the social sciences for example – where researchers recognise the value of being methodical and minimising bias. Systematic review methods are increasingly applied to the more traditional types of review, including literature reviews, hence the proliferation of terms like ‘systematic literature review’ and many more.

Beware of the labels 🚨. The terminology used to describe review types can vary by discipline and changes over time. To really understand how any review was done you will need to examine the methods critically and make your own assessment of the quality and reliability of each synthesis 🤓.

Review methods are evolving constantly as researchers find new ways to meet the challenge of synthesising the evidence. Systematic review methods have influenced many other review types, including the traditional literature review.

Chapter 1 | Structured Literature Reviews: Background and Definitions

Structured Literature Reviews

Structured literature reviews of the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) aim to synthesize existing research on a given topic using systematic and transparent procedures. The concept and principles of a systematic review inspire and guide the approach. A systematic review aims to identify, appraise, and synthesize all relevant research that meets explicit prespecified eligibility criteria (Higgins et al. 2019). 1 Because systematic reviews are intended to be exhaustive, proper implementation can require a considerable amount of time, expertise, and resources. Snilstveit et al. (2017) report an average production time of 12–24 months (depending on the scope and resources available) for a systematic review involving a multi-person expert research team. 2

Comprehensively identifying all relevant studies in large volumes of literature can be a particularly challenging and time-intensive task (Thomas, Newman, and Oliver 2013). A broad and fully systematic review often requires searching a variety of literature sources, screening many thousands of studies to identify those relevant to the review. For example, searchable databases do not always use a common set of terms or keywords to index literature. Even when a standardized nomenclature for describing an issue or topic is available, searches on websites such as Google Scholar or the World Bank eLibrary can still yield many irrelevant results. Moreover, such terms likely do not capture the full breadth or nuance of a concept perfectly (Cantrell, Booth, and Chambers, forthcoming). These factors can make it challenging to ensure that a search is comprehensive, and review teams may have to search very large volumes of literature to reach saturation of coverage for the phenomenon of interest. Many systematic reviews even fall short of the mark of conducting truly exhaustive searches (as also highlighted by Evans and Popova 2016).

IEG’s structured literature review approach falls into a subset of more rapid evidence reviews inspired by the concept of a systematic review. Other common terms used for these types of literature reviews include rapid reviews , rapid evidence reviews , and rapid evidence assessments (Littell 2018; Tricco et al. 2015). For the sake of consistency, the type of literature review evaluated in this paper will be referred to as a rapid evidence review for the remainder of the paper. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality categorizes such reviews according to the extent of synthesis applied to the material covered in review (AHRQ 2015). In its categorization, inventories provide a list of available evidence, along with other contextual information needed to help inform decisions related to the state of research on a given subject. However, inventories do not synthesize evidence or present conclusions related to the state of the literature. Rapid responses present the user with an answer based on the best available evidence but do not attempt to formally synthesize evidence into conclusions. Rapid reviews perform a synthesis (qualitative, quantitative, or both) to provide an answer about the direction of evidence and possibly its strength.

Though ostensibly less nuanced than a full systematic review, these approaches nonetheless abide by the same basic principles as a systematic review, such as adhering to prespecified criteria for including studies and transparently reporting on the analysis of all relevant studies identified. However, the methods used may streamline the general approach and procedures used. Many rapid evidence reviews aim to deliver results within six months or less (Ganann, Ciliska, and Thomas 2010; Snilstveit et al. 2017; Varker et al. 2015). They may also use a narrower range of search techniques or sources of literature (Haby et al. 2016; Harker and Kleijnen 2012). Such restrictions ensure that the review can be delivered within shorter timeframes and resource constraints or meet deadlines required to feed into policy and decision-making processes (Varker et al. 2015; Watt et al. 2008).

Given that structured literature reviews may be limited in their coverage of the literature and depth of analysis, it is important to understand the caveats associated with applying this approach. Narrow searches of wide-ranging topics and omitting methods of critical appraisal and synthesis may limit what can reliably be said about the state of the literature and research on a particular subject. However, the processes used to conduct structured literature reviews also vary greatly (Ganann, Ciliska, and Thomas 2010; Haby et al. 2016; Hunter et al. 2020; Varker et al. 2015). Each review inevitably establishes its own set of shortcuts and heuristics, delineating the review according to a unique set of project-specific objectives.

To reflect the variety of adjustments a rapid evidence review may adopt, it is important to treat each one as unique. Omitting certain sources of literature, search methods, and analytical approaches will affect different reviews unequally: some shortcuts might be more or less important, representing different levels of risk of bias in different reviews. For example, some sources of literature may be thematically more important regarding some research topics (as would be the case for research on health-related topics, for which searching Medline and PubMed would be intuitively more important). Alternatively, some studies may find citation and reference tracking (a method of searching discussed in “Literature Search and Analysis” in chapter   2) more important for identifying all relevant literature in some contexts (see Cooper et al. 2018; Linder et al. 2015; Papaioannou et al. 2010; and Wright, Golder, and Rodriguez-López 2014). The appropriate choice between the two can depend on the efficacy of search strategies using key terms to identify relevant literature on websites and in databases.

Furthermore, some rapid evidence reviews may also have very good coverage and depth: evidence indicates that a more thorough systematic review does not necessarily always yield different conclusions than a more abbreviated review of the same topic (for example, AHRQ 2015; Haby et al. 2016). Hence, broad-brush statements about the rigor and limitations of rapid evidence reviews do not necessarily reflect authors’ individual work or specific applications of the approach.

This chapter discussed some of the underlying concepts and terminology; the next chapter presents an example of a structured literature review based on a case study assessing the effects of the World Bank’s Doing Business report.

  • Oya, Schaefer, and Skalidou (2018; agricultural certification), Snilstveit et al. (2015; education), Vaessen et al. (2014; microcredit), and Waddington et al. (2014; farmer field schools) provide some examples of systematic reviews.
  • New technologies are decreasing the time required to complete systematic reviews. However, a systematic review still requires some scoping to adequately delineate what should (and should not) be included in its coverage before production can begin.

Systematic reviews are characterized by a methodical and replicable methodology and presentation. They involve a comprehensive search to locate all relevant published and unpublished work on a subject; a systematic integration of search results; and a critique of the extent, nature, and quality of evidence in relation to a particular research question. The best reviews synthesize studies to draw broad theoretical conclusions about what a literature means, linking theory to evidence and evidence to theory. This guide describes how to plan, conduct, organize, and present a systematic review of quantitative (meta-analysis) or qualitative (narrative review, meta-synthesis) information. We outline core standards and principles and describe commonly encountered problems. Although this guide targets psychological scientists, its high level of abstraction makes it potentially relevant to any subject area or discipline. We argue that systematic reviews are a key methodology for clarifying whether and how research findings replicate and for explaining possible inconsistencies, and we call for researchers to conduct systematic reviews to help elucidate whether there is a replication crisis.

Systematic Literature Review or Literature Review?

As a researcher, you may be required to conduct a literature review. But what kind of review do you need to complete? Is it a systematic literature review or a standard literature review? In this article, we’ll outline the purpose of a systematic literature review, the difference between literature review and systematic review, and other important aspects of systematic literature reviews.

What is a Systematic Literature Review?

The purpose of systematic literature reviews is simple. Essentially, it is to provide a high-level of a particular research question. This question, in and of itself, is highly focused to match the review of the literature related to the topic at hand. For example, a focused question related to medical or clinical outcomes.

The components of a systematic literature review are quite different from the standard literature review research theses that most of us are used to (more on this below). And because of the specificity of the research question, typically a systematic literature review involves more than one primary author. There’s more work related to a systematic literature review, so it makes sense to divide the work among two or three (or even more) researchers.

Your systematic literature review will follow very clear and defined protocols that are decided on prior to any review. This involves extensive planning, and a deliberately designed search strategy that is in tune with the specific research question. Every aspect of a systematic literature review, including the research protocols, which databases are used, and dates of each search, must be transparent so that other researchers can be assured that the systematic literature review is comprehensive and focused.

Most systematic literature reviews originated in the world of medicine science. Now, they also include any evidence-based research questions. In addition to the focus and transparency of these types of reviews, additional aspects of a quality systematic literature review includes:

  • Clear and concise review and summary
  • Comprehensive coverage of the topic
  • Accessibility and equality of the research reviewed

Systematic Review vs Literature Review

The difference between literature review and systematic review comes back to the initial research question. Whereas the systematic review is very specific and focused, the standard literature review is much more general. The components of a literature review, for example, are similar to any other research paper. That is, it includes an introduction, description of the methods used, a discussion and conclusion, as well as a reference list or bibliography.

A systematic review, however, includes entirely different components that reflect the specificity of its research question, and the requirement for transparency and inclusion. For instance, the systematic review will include:

  • Eligibility criteria for included research
  • A description of the systematic research search strategy
  • An assessment of the validity of reviewed research
  • Interpretations of the results of research included in the review

As you can see, contrary to the general overview or summary of a topic, the systematic literature review includes much more detail and work to compile than a standard literature review. Indeed, it can take years to conduct and write a systematic literature review. But the information that practitioners and other researchers can glean from a systematic literature review is, by its very nature, exceptionally valuable.

This is not to diminish the value of the standard literature review. The importance of literature reviews in research writing is discussed in this article . It’s just that the two types of research reviews answer different questions, and, therefore, have different purposes and roles in the world of research and evidence-based writing.

It would be understandable to think that a systematic literature review is similar to a meta analysis. But, whereas a systematic review can include several research studies to answer a specific question, typically a meta analysis includes a comparison of different studies to suss out any inconsistencies or discrepancies. What is a systematic review?

A systematic review is a firmly structured literature review, undertaken according to a fixed plan, system or method. As such, it is highly focused on a particular and explicit topic area with strict research parameters. Systematic reviews will often have a detailed plan known as a protocol, which is a statement of the approach and methods to be used in the review prior to undertaking it. 

Systematic review methodology is explicit and precise because it aims to minimise bias, thereby enhancing the reliability of any conclusions. It is therefore considered an evidence-based approach. Systematic reviews are commonly used by health professionals, but also policy makers and researchers.

Systematic, Scoping, and Other Literature Reviews: Overview

What Is a Systematic Review?

Regular literature reviews are simply summaries of the literature on a particular topic. A systematic review, however, is a comprehensive literature review conducted to answer a specific research question. Authors of a systematic review aim to find, code, appraise, and synthesize all of the previous research on their question in an unbiased and well-documented manner. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) outline the minimum amount of information that needs to be reported at the conclusion of a systematic review project. 

Other types of what are known as "evidence syntheses," such as scoping, rapid, and integrative reviews, have varying methodologies. While systematic reviews originated with and continue to be a popular publication type in medicine and other health sciences fields, more and more researchers in other disciplines are choosing to conduct evidence syntheses.

Getting Help with Reviews

Organization such as the Institute of Medicine recommend that you consult a librarian when conducting a systematic review. Librarians at the University of Nevada, Reno can help you:

  • Understand best practices for conducting systematic reviews and other evidence syntheses in your discipline
  • Choose and formulate a research question
  • Decide which review type (e.g., systematic, scoping, rapid, etc.) is the best fit for your project
  • Determine what to include and where to register a systematic review protocol
  • Select search terms and develop a search strategy
  • Identify databases and platforms to search
  • Find the full text of articles and other sources
  • Become familiar with free citation management (e.g., EndNote, Zotero)
  • Get access to you and help using Covidence, a systematic review project management tool

Doing a Systematic Review

  • Plan - This is the project planning stage. You and your team will need to develop a good research question, determine the type of review you will conduct (systematic, scoping, rapid, etc.), and establish the inclusion and exclusion criteria (e.g., you're only going to look at studies that use a certain methodology). All of this information needs to be included in your protocol. You'll also need to ensure that the project is viable - has someone already done a systematic review on this topic? Do some searches and check the various protocol registries to find out. 
  • Identify - Next, a comprehensive search of the literature is undertaken to ensure all studies that meet the predetermined criteria are identified. Each research question is different, so the number and types of databases you'll search - as well as other online publication venues - will vary. Some standards and guidelines specify that certain databases (e.g., MEDLINE, EMBASE) should be searched regardless. Your subject librarian can help you select appropriate databases to search and develop search strings for each of those databases.  
  • Evaluate - In this step, retrieved articles are screened and sorted using the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The risk of bias for each included study is also assessed around this time. It's best if you import search results into a citation management tool (see below) to clean up the citations and remove any duplicates. You can then use a tool like Rayyan (see below) to screen the results. You should begin by screening titles and abstracts only, and then you'll examine the full text of any remaining articles. Each study should be reviewed by a minimum of two people on the project team. 
  • Collect - Each included study is coded and the quantitative or qualitative data contained in these studies is then synthesized. You'll have to either find or develop a coding strategy or form that meets your needs. 
  • Explain - The synthesized results are articulated and contextualized. What do the results mean? How have they answered your research question?
  • Summarize - The final report provides a complete description of the methods and results in a clear, transparent fashion.

These types of studies employ a systematic method to analyze and synthesize the results of numerous studies. "Systematic" in this case means following a strict set of steps - as outlined by entities like PRISMA and the Institute of Medicine - so as to make the review more reproducible and less biased. Consistent, thorough documentation is also key. Reviews of this type are not meant to be conducted by an individual but rather a (small) team of researchers. Systematic reviews are widely used in the health sciences, often to find a generalized conclusion from multiple evidence-based studies. 

Meta-Analysis

A systematic method that uses statistics to analyze the data from numerous studies. The researchers combine the data from studies with similar data types and analyze them as a single, expanded dataset. Meta-analyses are a type of systematic review.

Scoping Review

A scoping review employs the systematic review methodology to explore a broader topic or question rather than a specific and answerable one, as is generally the case with a systematic review. Authors of these types of reviews seek to collect and categorize the existing literature so as to identify any gaps.

Rapid Review

Rapid reviews are systematic reviews conducted under a time constraint. Researchers make use of workarounds to complete the review quickly (e.g., only looking at English-language publications), which can lead to a less thorough and more biased review. 

Narrative Review

A traditional literature review that summarizes and synthesizes the findings of numerous original research articles. The purpose and scope of narrative literature reviews vary widely and do not follow a set protocol. Most literature reviews are narrative reviews. 

Umbrella Review

Umbrella reviews are, essentially, systematic reviews of systematic reviews. These compile evidence from multiple review studies into one usable document.

Systematic reviews are ranked very high in research and are considered the most valid form of medical evidence. They provide a complete summary of the current literature relevant to a research question and can be of immense use to medical professionals. Our goal with this paper is to conduct a narrative review of the literature about systematic reviews and outline the essential elements of a systematic review along with the limitations of such a review.

Introduction and background

A literature review provides an important insight into a particular scholarly topic. It compiles published research on a topic, surveys different sources of research, and critically examines these sources [ 1 ]. A literature review may be argumentative, integrative, historical, methodological, systematic, or theoretical, and these approaches may be adopted depending upon the types of analysis in a particular study [ 2 ].

Our topic of interest in this article is to understand the different steps of conducting a systematic review. Systematic reviews, according to Wright, et al., are defined as a “review of the evidence on a clearly formulated question that uses systematic and explicit methods to identify, select and critically appraise relevant primary research, and to extract and analyze data from the studies that are included in the review” [ 3 ]. A systematic review provides an unbiased assessment of these studies [ 4 ]. Such reviews emerged in the 1970s in the field of social sciences. Systematic reviews, as well as the meta-analyses of the appropriate studies, can be the best form of evidence available to clinicians [ 3 ]. The unsystematic narrative review is more likely to include only research selected by the authors, which introduces bias and, therefore, frequently lags behind and contradicts the available evidence [ 5 ].

Epidemiologist Archie Cochrane played a vital role in formulating the methodology of the systematic review [ 6 ]. Dr. Cochrane loved to study patterns of disease and how these related to the environment. In the early 1970s, he found that many decisions in health care were made without reliable, up-to-date evidence about the treatments used [ 6 ].

A systematic review may or may not include meta-analysis, depending on whether results from different studies can be combined to provide a meaningful conclusion. David Sackett defined meta-analysis as a “specific statistical strategy for assembling the results of several studies into a single estimate” [ 7 - 8 ].

While the systematic review has several advantages, it has several limitations which can affect the conclusion. Inadequate literature searches and heterogeneous studies can lead to false conclusions. Similarly, the quality of assessment is an important step in systematic reviews, and it can lead to adverse consequences if not done properly.

The purpose of this article is to understand the important steps involved in conducting a systematic review of all kinds of clinical studies. We conducted a narrative review of the literature about systematic reviews with a special focus on articles that discuss conducting reviews of randomized controlled trials. We discuss key guidelines and important terminologies and present the advantages and limitations of systematic reviews.

Narrative reviews are a discussion of important topics on a theoretical point of view, and they are considered an important educational tool in continuing medical education [ 9 ]. Narrative reviews take a less formal approach than systematic reviews in that narrative reviews do not require the presentation of the more rigorous aspects characteristic of a systematic review such as reporting methodology, search terms, databases used, and inclusion and exclusion criteria [ 9 ]. With this in mind, our narrative review will give a detailed explanation of the important steps of a systematic review.

Preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (PRISMA-P) checklist

Systematic reviews are conducted based on predefined criteria and protocol. The PRISMA-P checklist, developed by Moher, et al., contains 17 items (26 including sub-items) comprising the important steps of a systematic review, including information about authors, co-authors, their mailing and email addresses, affiliations, and any new or updated version of a previous systematic review [ 9 ]. It also identifies a plan for documenting important protocol amendments, registry names, registration numbers, financial disclosures, and other support services [ 10 ]. Moher, et al. also state that methods of systematic reviews involve developing eligibility criteria and describing information sources, search strategies, study selection processes, outcomes, assessment of bias in individual studies, and data synthesis [ 10 ].

Research question

Writing a research question is the first step in conducting a systematic review and is of paramount importance as it outlines both the need and validity of systematic reviews (Nguyen, et al., unpublished data). It also increases the efficiency of the review by limiting the time and cost of identifying and obtaining relevant literature [ 11 ]. The research question should summarize the main objective of a systematic review.

An example research question might read, “How does attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affect the academic performance of middle school children in North America?” The question focuses on the type of data, analysis, and topic to be discussed (i.e., ADHD among North American middle school students). Try to avoid research questions that are too narrow or broad—they can lead to the selection of only a few studies and the ability to generalize results to any other populations may be limited. An example of a research question that is too narrow would be, “What is the prevalence of ADHD in children and adolescents in Chicago, IL?” Alternately, if the research question is too broad, it can be difficult to reach a conclusion due to poor methodology. An example of a research question that is too broad in scope would be, “What are the effects of ADHD on the functioning of children and adolescents in North America?”

Different tools that can be used to help devise a research question, depending on the type of question, are: population, intervention, comparator, and outcomes (PICO); sample, phenomenon of interest, design, evaluation, and research type (SPIDER); setting, perspective, intervention, comparison, and evaluation (SPICE); and expectation, client group, location, impact, professionals, and service (ECLIPSE).

The PICO approach is mostly used to compare different interventions with each other. It helps to formulate a research question related to prognosis, diagnosis, and therapies [ 12 ].

Scenario: A 50-year-old white woman visited her psychiatrist with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. She was prescribed fluoxetine, which she feels has been helpful. However, she experienced some unpleasant side effects of nausea and abdominal discomfort. She has recently been told by a friend about the use of St. John’s wort in treating depression and would like to try this in treating her current depression. (Formulating research questions, unpublished data).

In the above-mentioned scenario, the sample population is a 50-year-old female with major depressive disorder; the intervention is St. John’s wort; the comparison is fluoxetine; and the outcome would be efficacy and safety. In order to see the outcome of both efficacy and safety, we will compare the efficacy and safety of both St. John’s wort and fluoxetine in a sample population for treating depression. This scenario represents an example where we can apply the PICO approach to compare two interventions.

In contrast, the SPIDER approach is focused more on study design and samples rather than populations [ 13 ]. The SPIDER approach can be used in this research question: “What is the experience of psychiatry residents attending a transgender education?” The sample is psychiatry residents; the phenomenon of interest is transgender education; the design is a survey; the evaluation looks at the experience; and the research type is qualitative. 

The SPICE approach can be used to evaluate the outcome of a service, intervention, or project [ 14 ]. The SPICE approach applies to the following research question: “In psychiatry clinics, does the combined use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and psychotherapy reduce depression in an outpatient clinic versus SSRI therapy alone?” The setting is the psychiatry clinic; the perspective/population is the outpatient; the intervention is combined psychotherapy and SSRI; the comparison is SSRI alone; and the evaluation is reduced depression. 

The ECLIPSE approach is useful for evaluating the outcome of a policy or service (Nguyen, et al., unpublished data). ECLIPSE can apply in the following research question: “How can a resident get access to medical records of patients admitted to inpatient from other hospitals?” The expectation is: “What are you looking to improve/change to increase access to medical records for patients admitted to inpatient?” The client group is the residents; the location is the inpatient setting; the impact would be the residents having easy access to medical records from other hospitals; and the professionals in this scenario would be those involved in improving the service experiences such as hospital administrators and IT staff.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria

Establishing inclusion and exclusion criteria come after formulating research questions. The concept of inclusion and exclusion of data in a systematic review provides a basis on which the reviewer draws valid and reliable conclusions regarding the effect of the intervention for the disorder under consideration [ 11 ]. Inclusions and exclusion are based on preset criteria for specific systematic review. It should be done before starting the literature search in order to minimize the possibility of bias.

Eligibility criteria provide the boundaries of the systematic review [ 15 ]. Participants, interventions, and comparison of a research question provide the basis for eligibility criteria [ 15 ]. The inclusion criteria should be able to identify the studies of interest and, if the inclusion criteria are too broad or too narrow, it can lead to an ineffective screening process.

Protocol registration

Developing and registering research protocol is another important step of conducting a systematic review. The research protocol ensures that a systematic review is carefully planned and explicitly documented before the review starts, thus promoting consistency in conduct for the review team and supporting the accountability, research integrity, and transparency of the eventually completed review [ 10 ]. PROSPERO and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews are utilized for registering research protocols and research questions, and they check for prior existing duplicate protocols or research questions. PROSPERO is an international database of prospectively registered systematic reviews related to health care and social sciences (PRISMA, 2016). It is funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The Cochrane Collaboration concentrates on producing systematic reviews of interventions and diagnostic test accuracy but does not currently produce reviews on questions of prognosis or etiology [ 16 ].

A detailed and extensive search strategy is important for the systematic review since it minimizes bias in the review process [ 17 ].

Selecting and searching appropriate electronic databases is determined by the topic of interest. Important databases are: MEDLARS Online (MEDLINE), which is the online counterpart to the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS); Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE); and Google Scholar. There are multiple electronic databases available based on the area of interest. Other important databases include: PsycINFO for psychology and psychiatry; Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED) for complementary medicine; Manual, Alternative, and Natural Therapy Index System (MANTIS) for alternative medical literature; and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) for nursing and allied health [ 15 ].

Additional studies relevant for the review may be found by looking at the references of studies identified by different databases [ 15 ]. Non-indexed articles may be found by searching the content of journals, conferences proceedings, and abstracts. It will also help with letters and commentaries which may not get indexed [ 15 ]. Reviewing clinical trial registries can provide information about any ongoing trials or unpublished research [ 15 ]. A gray literature search can access unpublished papers, reports, and conference reports, and it generally covers studies that are published in an informal fashion, rather than in an indexed journal [ 15 ]. Further search can be performed by selecting important key articles and going through in-text citations [ 15 ].

Using Boolean operators, truncation, and wildcards

Boolean operators use the relationship between different search words to help with the search strategy. These are simple words (i.e., AND, OR, and NOT) which can help with more focused and productive results (poster, Jahan, et al.: How to conduct a systematic review. APPNA 39th Summer Convention. Washington, DC. 2016). The Boolean operator AND finds articles with all the search words. The use of OR broadens the focus of the search, and it will include articles with at least one search term. The researchers can also ignore certain results from the records by using NOT in the search strategy.

An example of AND would be using “depression” AND “children” in the search strategy with the goal of studying depression in children. This search strategy will include all the articles about both depression and children. The researchers may use OR if the emphasis of the study is mood disorders or affective disorders in adolescents. In that case, the search strategy will be “mood disorders” OR “affective disorders” AND “adolescents.” This search will find all the articles about mood disorders or affective disorders in adolescents. The researchers can use NOT if they only want to study depression in children and want to ignore bipolar disorder from the search. An example search in this scenario would be “depression” NOT “bipolar disorder” AND “children.” This will help ignore studies related to bipolar disorder in children.

Truncation and wildcards are other tools to make search strategy more comprehensive and focused. While the researchers search a database for certain articles, they frequently face terminologies that have the same initial root of a word but different endings. An example would be "autism," "autistic," and "autism spectrum disorder." These words have a similar initial root derived from “autis” but they end differently in each case. The truncation symbol (*) retrieves articles that contain words beginning with “autis” plus any additional characters. Wildcards are used for words with the same meanings but different spellings due to various reasons. For the words with spelling variations of a single letter, wildcard symbols can be used. When the researcher inputs “M+N” in the search bar, this returns results containing both “man” or “men” as the wildcard accounts for the spelling variations between the letters M and N.

Study selection

Study selection should be performed in a systematic manner, so reviewers deal with fewer errors and a lower risk of bias (online course, Li T, Dickersin K: Introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis. 2016. https://www.coursera.org/learn/systematic-review #). Study selection should involve two independent reviewers who select studies using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Any disagreements during this process should be resolved by discussion or by a third reviewer [ 10 ]. Specific study types can be selected depending on the research question. For example, questions on incidence and prevalence can be answered by surveys and cohort studies. Clinical trials can provide answers to questions related to therapy and screening. Queries regarding diagnostic accuracy can be answered by clinical trials and cross-sectional studies (online course, Li T, Dickersin K: Introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis. 2016. https://www.coursera.org/learn/systematic-review #). Prognosis and harm-related questions should use cohort studies and clinical trials, and etiology questions should use case-control and cohort studies (online course, Li T, Dickersin K: Introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis. 2016. https://www.coursera.org/learn/systematic-review #).

Data screening and data extractions are two of the major steps in conducting a systematic review [ 18 ]. Data screening involves searching for relevant articles in different databases using keywords. The next step of data screening is manuscript selection by reviewing each manuscript in the search results to compare that manuscript against the inclusion criteria [ 18 ]. The researchers should also review the references of the papers selected before selecting the final paper, which is the last step of data screening [ 18 ].

The next stage is extracting and appraising the data of the included articles [ 18 ]. A data extraction form should be used to help reduce the number of errors, and more than one person should record the data [ 17 ]. Data should be collected on specific points like population type, study authors, agency, study design, humanitarian crisis, target age groups, research strengths from the literature, setting, study country, type(s) of public health intervention, and health outcome(s) addressed by the public health intervention. All this information should then be put into an electronic database [ 18 ].

Assessing bias

Bias is a systematic error (or deviation from the truth) in results or inferences. Biases can change the results of any study and lead to an underestimation or overestimation of the true intervention effect [ 19 ]. Biases can impact any aspect of a review, including selecting studies, collecting and extracting data, and making a conclusion. Biases can vary in magnitude; some are small, with negligible effect, but some are substantial to a degree where an apparent finding may be entirely due to bias [ 19 ]. There are different types of bias, including, but not limited to, selection, detection, attrition, reporting, and performance.

Selection bias occurs when a sample selected is not representative of the whole general population. If randomization of the sample is done correctly, then chances of selection bias can be minimized [ 20 ].

Detection bias refers to systematic differences between groups in how outcomes are determined. This type of bias is based on knowledge of the intervention provided and its outcome [ 19 ].

Attrition bias refers to systematic differences between groups in withdrawals from a study [ 19 ]. The data will be considered incomplete if some subjects are withdrawn or have irregular visits during data collection.

Reporting bias refers to systematic differences between reported and unreported findings, and it is commonly seen during article reviews. Reporting bias is based on reviewer judgment about the outcome of selected articles [ 20 ].

Performance bias develops due to the knowledge of the allocated interventions by participants and personnel during the study [ 20 ]. Using a double-blind study design helps prevent performance bias, where neither the experimenter nor the subjects know which group contains controls and which group contains the test article [ 14 ].

Last step of systematic review: discussion

The discussion of a systematic review is where a summary of the available evidence for different outcomes is written and discussed [ 10 ]. The limitations of a systematic review are also discussed in detail. Finally, a conclusion is drawn after evaluating the results and considering limitations [ 10 ].

Discussion of the current article

Systematic reviews with or without a meta-analysis are currently ranked to be the best available evidence in the hierarchy of evidence-based practice [ 21 ]. We have discussed the methodology of a systematic review. A systematic review is classified in the category of filtered information because it appraises the quality of the study and its application in the field of medicine [ 21 ]. However, there are some limitations of the systematic review, as we mentioned earlier in our article. A large randomized controlled trial may provide a better conclusion than a systematic review of many smaller trials due to their larger sample sizes [ 22 ], which help the researchers generalize their conclusions for a bigger population. Other important factors to consider include higher dropout rates in large studies, co-interventions, and heterogeneity among studies included in the review.

As we discussed the limitations of the systematic review and its effect on quality of evidence, there are several tools to rate the evidence, such as the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system [ 22 ]. GRADE provides a structured approach to evaluating the risk of bias, serious inconsistency between studies, indirectness, imprecision of the results, and publication bias [ 22 ]. Another approach used to rate the quality of evidence is a measurement tool to assess systematic reviews (AMSTAR) [ 23 ]. It is also available in several languages [ 23 ].

Conclusions

Despite its limitations, a systematic review can add to the knowledge of the scientific community especially when there are gaps in the existing knowledge. However, conducting a systematic review requires different steps that involve different tools and strategies. It can be difficult at times to access and utilize these resources. A researcher can understand and strategize a systematic review following the different steps outlined in this literature review. However, conducting a systematic review requires a thorough understanding of all the concepts and tools involved, which is an extensive endeavor to be summed up in one article.

The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the Center for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) provide excellent guidance through their insightful and detailed guidelines. We recommend consulting these resources for further guidance.

Given that our article is a narrative review of the scholarly literature, it contains the same limitations as noted for any narrative review. ‘Systematic’ describes the review’s methods. It means that they are transparent, reproducible and defined before the search gets underway. That’s important because it helps to minimise the bias that would result from cherry-picking studies in a non-systematic way. 

Literature reviews don’t usually apply the same rigour in their methods. That’s because, unlike systematic reviews, they don’t aim to produce an answer to a clinical question. Literature reviews can provide context or background information for a new piece of research. They can also stand alone as a general guide to what is already known about a particular topic.

As a product , it is a carefully written examination, interpretation, evaluation, and synthesis of the published literature related to your topic. It focuses on what is known about your topic and what methodologies, models, theories, and concepts have been applied to it by others.

What is the difference between a systematic review and a systematic literature review?

For those not immersed in systematic reviews, understanding the difference between a systematic review and a systematic literature review can be confusing.  It helps to realise that a “systematic review” is a clearly defined thing, but ambiguity creeps in around the phrase “systematic literature review” because people can and do use it in a variety of ways. 

A systematic review is a research study of research studies.  To qualify as a systematic review, a review needs to adhere to standards of transparency and reproducibility.  It will use explicit methods to identify, select, appraise, and synthesise empirical results from different but similar studies.  The study will be done in stages:  

  • In stage one, the question, which must be answerable, is framed
  • Stage two is a comprehensive literature search to identify relevant studies
  • In stage three the identified literature’s quality is scrutinised and decisions made on whether or not to include each article in the review
  • In stage four the evidence is summarised and, if the review includes a meta-analysis, the data extracted; in the final stage, findings are interpreted. [1]

Some reviews also state what degree of confidence can be placed on that answer, using the GRADE scale.  By going through these steps, a systematic review provides a broad evidence base on which to make decisions about medical interventions, regulatory policy, safety, or whatever question is analysed.   By documenting each step explicitly, the review is not only reproducible, but can be updated as more evidence on the question is generated.

Sometimes when people talk about a “systematic literature review”, they are using the phrase interchangeably with “systematic review”.  However, people can also use the phrase systematic literature review to refer to a literature review that is done in a fairly systematic way, but without the full rigor of a systematic review. 

For instance, for a systematic review, reviewers would strive to locate relevant unpublished studies in grey literature and possibly by contacting researchers directly.  Doing this is important for combatting publication bias, which is the tendency for studies with positive results to be published at a higher rate than studies with null results.  It is easy to understand how this well-documented tendency can skew a review’s findings, but someone conducting a systematic literature review in the loose sense of the phrase might, for lack of resource or capacity, forgo that step. 

Another difference might be in who is doing the research for the review. A systematic review is generally conducted by a team including an information professional for searches and a statistician for meta-analysis, along with subject experts.  Team members independently evaluate the studies being considered for inclusion in the review and compare results, adjudicating any differences of opinion.   In contrast, a systematic literature review might be conducted by one person. 

Overall, while a systematic review must comply with set standards, you would expect any review called a systematic literature review to strive to be quite comprehensive.  A systematic literature review would contrast with what is sometimes called a narrative or journalistic literature review, where the reviewer’s search strategy is not made explicit, and evidence may be cherry-picked to support an argument.

FSTA is a key tool for systematic reviews and systematic literature reviews in the sciences of food and health.

The FSTA thesaurus will surface results that would be missed with keyword searching alone. Since the thesaurus is designed for the sciences of food and health, it is the most comprehensive for the field. 

All indexing and abstracting in FSTA is in English, so you can do your searching in English yet pick up non-English language results, and get those results translated if they meet the criteria for inclusion in a systematic review.

FSTA includes grey literature (conference proceedings) which can be difficult to find, but is important to include in comprehensive searches.

FSTA content has a deep archive. It goes back to 1969 for farm to fork research, and back to the late 1990s for food-related human nutrition literature—systematic reviews (and any literature review) should include not just the latest research but all relevant research on a question. 

You can also use FSTA to find literature reviews.

FSTA allows you to easily search for review articles (both narrative and systematic reviews) by using the subject heading or thesaurus term “REVIEWS" and an appropriate free-text keyword.

On the Web of Science or EBSCO platform, an FSTA search for reviews about cassava would look like this: DE "REVIEWS" AND cassava.

On the Ovid platform using the multi-field search option, the search would look like this: reviews.sh. AND cassava.af.

In 2011 FSTA introduced the descriptor META-ANALYSIS, making it easy to search specifically for systematic reviews that include a meta-analysis published from that year onwards.

On the EBSCO or Web of Science platform, an FSTA search for systematic reviews with meta-analyses about staphylococcus aureus would look like this: DE "META-ANALYSIS" AND staphylococcus aureus.

On the Ovid platform using the multi-field search option, the search would look like this: meta-analysis.sh. AND staphylococcus aureus.af.

Systematic reviews with meta-analyses published before 2011 are included in the REVIEWS controlled vocabulary term in the thesaurus.

An easy way to locate pre-2011 systematic reviews with meta-analyses is to search the subject heading or thesaurus term "REVIEWS" AND meta-analysis as a free-text keyword AND another appropriate free-text keyword.

On the Web of Science or EBSCO platform, the FSTA search would look like this: DE "REVIEWS" AND meta-analysis AND carbohydrate*

On the Ovid platform using the multi-field search option, the search would look like this: reviews .s h. AND meta-analysis.af. AND carbohydrate*.af.

A literature review is a discussion on the already existing material in the subject area. The structure of a literature review is similar to that of an article or essay, unlike an annotated bibliography . The information that is collected is integrated into paragraphs based on their relevance. Literature reviews help researchers to evaluate the existing literature, to identify a gap in the research area, to place their study in the existing research and identify future research.

Difference Between Literature Review and Systematic Review

What is a Systematic Review

A systematic review is a type of systematic review that is focused on a particular research question . The main purpose of this type of research is to identify, review, and summarize the best available research on a specific research question. Systematic reviews are used mainly because the review of existing studies is often more convenient than conducting a new study. These are mostly used in the health and medical field, but they are not rare in fields such as social sciences and environmental science.  Given below are the main stages of a systematic review:

  • Defining the research question and identifying an objective method
  • Searching for relevant data that from existing research studies that meet certain criteria (research studies must be reliable and valid).
  • Extracting data from the selected studies (data such as the participants, methods, outcomes, etc.
  • Assessing the quality of information
  • Analyzing and combining all the data which would give an overall result.

Literature Review is a critical evaluation of the existing published work in a selected research area.

Systematic Review is a type of literature review that is focused on a particular research question.

Literature Review aims to review the existing literature, identify the research gap, place the research study in relation to other studies, to evaluate promising research methods, and to suggest further research.

Systematic Review aims to identify, review, and summarize the best available research on a specific research question.

Research Question

In Literature Review, a r esearch question is formed after writing the literature review and identifying the research gap.

In Systematic Review, a research question is formed at the beginning of the systematic review.

Research Study

Literature Review is an essential component of a research study and is done at the beginning of the study.

Within a scholarly work, the literature review situates the current work within the larger scholarly conversation and emphasizes how that particular scholarly work contributes to the conversation on the topic. When writing this type of literature review, it's helpful to start by identifying sources most relevant to your research question. A literature review may itself be a scholarly publication and provide an analysis of what has been written on a particular topic without contributing original research. These types of literature reviews can serve to help keep people updated on a field as well as helping scholars choose a research topic to fill gaps in the knowledge on that topic. Systematic Review

Systematic literature reviews follow specific procedures in some ways similar to setting up an experiment to ensure that future scholars can replicate the same steps. They are also helpful for evaluating data published over multiple studies. Thus, these are common in the medical field and may be used by healthcare providers to help guide diagnosis and treatment decisions. Cochrane Reviews are one example of this type of literature review.

Semi-Systematic Review

When a systematic review is not feasible, a semi-systematic review can help synthesize research on a topic or how a topic has been studied in different fields (Snyder 2019). Rather than focusing on quantitative data, this review type identifies themes, theoretical perspectives, and other qualitative information related to the topic. These types of reviews can be particularly helpful for a historical topic overview, for developing a theoretical model, and for creating a research agenda for a field (Snyder 2019). As with systematic reviews, a search strategy must be developed before conducting the review.

Integrative Review

An integrative review is less systematic and can be helpful for developing a theoretical model or to reconceptualize a topic. As Synder (2019) notes, " This type of review often re quires a more creative collection of data, as the purpose is usually not to cover all articles ever published on the topic but rather to combine perspectives and insights from di ff erent fi elds or research traditions" (p. 336).

First described by Grant and Booth in 2009, a systematised review differs from a systematic review as it does meet the methodological requirements. While some of the elements of a systematic review are included, a systematised review generally only includes one reviewer, may not include extensive searching over multiple databases and may exclude risk of bias assessments.

No methods, standards or guidlelines are available and "typically this type of review is conducted as postgraduate student assignment " (Grant & Booth, 2009) .

You would evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each study, synthesize the overall findings, and identify any gaps or contradictions in the existing research.

What is a Systematic Review?

A systematic review is a type of literature review that follows a rigorous, standardized methodology to identify, evaluate, and synthesize all relevant studies on a specific research question. It is designed to minimize bias and provide a comprehensive and reproducible overview of the available evidence on a topic. Systematic reviews are considered the highest level of evidence in evidence-based practice and are often used to inform policy decisions, clinical guidelines, and future research.

Example: If you want to determine the most effective treatment for a particular medical condition, you would conduct a systematic review by defining a clear research question (e.g., “What is the most effective pharmacological treatment for condition X?”). You would develop a comprehensive search strategy, search multiple databases for relevant studies, apply predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, critically appraise the quality of the included studies, and synthesize the findings from all the included studies using meta-analysis or other appropriate methods.

Similarities between Literature Reviews and Systematic Reviews:

In a literature review, it is the literature itself that you should frame your argument around, by providing an in-depth analysis of the ‘conversation’ around your topic. Usually, when given a literature review assignment, you will have to answer a question or topic but do not take this as a prompt to just write an essay about the issue(s).

A literature review is there to show your understanding of a topic by identifying major debates and trends between authors and/or schools of thought, and establishing which ideas and methods are most significant to it. It should also include an argument, and identify gaps and limitations in the literature to show why your research is important and how it fills these gaps.

Research and Planning

Your academic lead should give you an idea of how many sources they expect you to review, but you can always ask them for advice and look at other literature reviews in your field for inspiration. Just like any other assignment, use the key words from your essay or research question(s) to search for studies.

To make sure your review is relevant, only discuss research from the timeframe considered ‘current’ in your field. When reading the literature you choose, try to answer these questions:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What points are used to develop this?
  • What evidence is being used?
  • What is the support for these claims?
  • Do you agree?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses?
  • Do other authors challenge or agree?
  • What is the methodology?
  • How relevant is this to my own research?

Structure of a bridge

Just like a typical essay, a literature review should include an introduction, themed paragraphs and a conclusion, but each section structured a little differently.

Introduction (approximately 10% of overall word count):

Similar to most essays, the introduction of a literature review should state the assignment’s purpose, establish the key concepts and set expectations for the reader.

  • Statement of purpose: what is the question you are setting out to answer? How does it fit into your field?
  • Justify your question: why is it important and how will it contribute to knowledge in your field?
  • Scope of review : provide a little information about the literature you will review and why you chose it.
  • Signposting: map out the structure of the main body, with the theme or concept behind each section.
  • Limitations of the review: does the amount of literature make it difficult to review the topic? Are there any issues you have not had a chance to discuss?

Main body paragraphs:

When researching and planning, you will hopefully find some themes that the literature can be grouped into. Each main body section should review one specific theme and, even though you can compare to literature from other sections, you should keep the discussion of each study to its assigned section. Each paragraph or section should have:

  • Topic sentence(s): introduce the theme of the section and the studies that will be discussed in it.
  • Description: highlight the studies’ claims that are most relevant to the essay or research question(s).
  • Analysis: compare and contrast the texts’ trends, tendencies, major findings, debates and methods.
  • Evaluation: consider the texts’ strengths and limitations, maybe make suggestions that would improve them, and identify gaps in the field.
  • Transition: introduce the next section and show how it is linked to this one.

Conclusion (approximately 10% of overall wordcount):

Like most essays, a literature review’s conclusion summarises and emphasises your main points, so should not contain any new information or insight.

  • Topic sentence(s): indicate this is the end of the assignment and refer back to the essay or research question(s).
  • Recap: summarise the key judgements that you have made and the gaps you have found in the field.
  • Closing statement: give a final statement that proves you have completed the assignment’s objective(s), look to the future of the field and, if relevant, show how this connects to your thesis.
