How the KTLA newsroom came together to honor Sam Rubin

On Friday, May 10, 2024, the KTLA newsroom changed forever.

It was around noon when the news came of Sam Rubin’s passing. It came to the assignment desk first, where KTLA hears the heartbeat of Los Angeles, something Rubin has been for more than three decades.

For the next hour, the newsroom as a whole banded together to respond to the news much like any other major event — despite the heartache at the station – with non-stop interviews, commentary and reflection.

In such a troubling time, a simple hug can heal so many.

KTLA’s own sports reporter Krystle Rich came down the long hallway into the newsroom, a walk Rubin would make dozens of times during his early morning shifts.

She took the time to hug each KTLA family member, experiencing the same pain all at once.

Rubin was all over the newsroom, often heading from one end to the other. To the untrained eye, this could easily be misinterpreted as he was too busy to chat.

The reality was, Sam Rubin was one of the most engaged reporters in the newsroom and would still take the time to present his gentle candor with so many who walked into his life.

In the 11 hours that followed, many departments sifted through hours of segments, photos and videos.

Over the next several hours, the newsroom took the time to try and celebrate Sam in a way to honor his legacy, while also staying true to KTLA’s commitment to journalism in the way it’s been done for nearly 80 years.

By reporting the news.

It’s been two days since the passing of Sam Rubin and all of Los Angeles has poured in their tributes.

Hollywood mourned Rubin with an outpouring of social media posts.

Iconic L.A. landmarks like the TCL Chinese Theatre, SoFi Stadium and the ferris wheel have n the Santa Monica Pier all paid tribute to one of Angeleno’s first stops for entertainment news.

Rubin was embedded in the very fabric of Los Angeles , growing up in the city after moving from San Diego at a young age.

He attended University High School, reporting the news for L.A. city schools.

He graduated from Occidental College in 1982, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in American studies and rhetoric.

In his over 30 years at KTLA, he’s won countless Emmys and a Golden Mike for Best Entertainment Reporter.

He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Southern California Broadcasters Association.

Sam Rubin was 64.

Espinosa leaves KTLA for LA Sheriff’s communications role

May 23, 2019 by Veronica Villafañe

Elizabeth Espinosa said good-bye to her KTLA-5 News reporting job last week, after two decades in the broadcast industry, to start a new role in communications.

The TV reporter and radio host is now executive director of communications for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

She won’t leave the broadcast industry entirely. She’ll continue to host her radio talk show “Sunday Morning with Elizabeth Espinosa” on KFI-AM 640.

A well-know TV personality in Los Angeles, Espinosa will be tasked with leading strategic media and communications outreach efforts to elevate the visibility of the LASD.

An L.A. native, Espinoza started her career as an assignment desk editor at Telemundo 52. She moved on to on-air reporting at Telemundo 48 in the Bay Area, later working at Fox 6’s XETV-TV in San Diego, Univision’s KMEX-34 and KTTV-Fox 11 News’ morning show “Good Day LA.”

She also hosted nightly live talk show “Sin Límites con Elizabeth Espinosa” on the short-lived CNN Latino.

Most recently, Espinoza was co-host and producer of the weekly public affairs talk show PBS “Studio SoCal.”

Jaime Chambers joins Fox 5 San Diego as a reporter arriving from our sister station, KTLA.

Grandson of legendary KTLA reporter Stan Chambers, Jaime joined KTLA as a news intern after attending college in Santa Barbara where he studied biology and planned to become a doctor. While in college he became a medic and lifeguard and went to Fiji to provide medical relief.

Jaime was hired as a KTLA news assignment desk assistant in 2001. After assisting in KTLA's coverage of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the young Chambers made the decision to stick with a career in broadcast journalism.

Jaime broke into reporting when, in 2003, he happened to be in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles as a small plane crashed into a nearby apartment building. Using his experience as a medic, Jaime tried to help victims until the fire department and paramedics arrived. A KTLA news reporter on the scene interviewed Jaime live to ascertain what the statuses of some of the victims were. Jaime's clear and concise report impressed KTLA news management so much that it was decided he would train as a reporter under his grandfather, Stan Chambers.

Since 2003, Jaime developed his broadcast reporting skills as a full-time reporter for KTLA's "Prime News," working alongside his grandfather. An avid surfer and snowboarder, Jaime also provides surf and snow reports for the "KTLA Morning News," as well as "Prime News."

Jaime is an avid surfer and snowboarder in his spare time. He is happy to return to Southern California. Jaime is married to his college sweetheart, Julie, and is the proud father of Annabelle Kate Chambers
