Research in the School of Psychology and Social Work
Research in our school encompasses both lab-based and applied research. Our lab-based research investigates mental processes such as learning, memory, and perception. We investigate the nature of these processes in adults, whether they are critically linked to particular brain areas, how they develop in children, how they are affected by issues such as mental health problems and neurological conditions, and whether similar processes can be observed in non-human species.
Our applied research brings together expertise and specialisms across clinical psychology and social work. Together our researchers address a wide variety of nationally and internationally relevant topics such as dementia; addictions and substance misuse; long-term health conditions; adult and adolescent mental health; suicide prevention and postvention; health inequalities; homelessness; death, dying and bereavement; safeguarding children and adults; domestic abuse; service implementation, delivery and evaluation; social care workforce; carers.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 84% of our Psychology and Neuroscience research and 89% of our Social Work and Social Policy research was rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
Research strengths
Alcohol and drug research.
Our research in this field is influential in developing clinical practice and informing alcohol policy.
Based in the University’s Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research, our work leads on the development of clinical and public health research into alcohol and drug use. With a keen interest in collaborative projects, we maintain and grow research that changes lives and communities.
Featured project .
Health and Social Wellbeing in Long-term Conditions
Our research in this field focuses on the social, physical and emotional wellbeing of people experiencing long-term health conditions. This includes an interest in innovative and creative approaches to improving wellbeing, such as the use of music and other arts-based interventions.
We also explore the development of social networks and approaches to improving isolation – which is often experienced by people living with long-term conditions.
Thinking, Imagination and Memory
Members of this theme are concerned with understanding human memory and the functions that memory serves in our everyday lives, such as reliving past experiences and imagining hypothetical events. Specific interests include the role of memory in imagining future events and alternative realities, and word learning. Other topics include autobiographical memory, false memories, involuntary memories, prospective memory, the conscious experiences associated with memory, intentional forgetting, and memory deficits in people with depression and schizophrenia.
Understanding Other Minds and Communication
The aim of this theme is to understand the cognitive and neural processes involved in social interaction and communication. Current projects include belief and knowledge processing, emotional processing in people with autism, and the neural correlates of action prediction in human–human and human–robot interactions. Researchers also investigate the role of visual attention during social interaction and the relationship between gesture and speech.
