beast tamil movie review rating

The tone and style of the Indian anti-terrorist action flick “Beast” varies wildly throughout, sometimes even within the same scene. This takes some getting used to, especially in a “ Die Hard ”-style siege thriller that’s also sometimes a musical-comedy about a handsome bachelor spy who also loves children and excels at dismembering and/or murdering terrorists.

There’s nothing unusual about this Masala-style of Bollywood pop filmmaking, where filmmakers pander to the back row with a schizoid combination of Vaudevillian quips and pop culture references, overdetermined romantic interludes, and nationalistic saber-rattling. This sort of anti-terrorist movie also sits comfortably next to a couple of other COVID-delayed Indian productions, especially from Bollywood (Hindi language) like the blockbuster “Sooryavanshi” and the superhero thriller “Attack—Part 1.”

“Beast,” a Kollywood (Tamil) star vehicle for Vijay, still feels different, if only for how vigorously its creators try to sell their lead as a 21st century renaissance man. Vijay (“Master”) can dance a little, drive a car through various glass surfaces, and also behead a terrorist and then chuck that guy’s disembodied head out of a tall window. To say nothing of the scene where Vijay puts on a set of roller blades and literally skates circles around a group of mask-wearing extremists.

Vijay’s all-things-for-everyone self-image is celebrated throughout, as in the chorus of one anthemic song that hails the chipmunk-cheeked hero as “leaner, meaner, stronger.” A concluding number also describes Vijay as a “multifaced tiger with a multifaceted avatar.” At this point in the movie, Vijay’s flying himself back from Pakistan in a borrowed military jet plane, having just independently massacred a terrorist encampment.

In “Beast,” Vijay plays Veera, a superhumanly resourceful former member of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) intelligence agency. Veera retired from RAW eleven years before the movie’s present day: in an introductory flashback, Veera unintentionally blows up a little girl with a rocket launcher. Look, there’s no way to make this plot sound less crazed than it is, so let’s have a paragraph break.

Ok, so Veera’s now extra-sensitive about kids, which explains why he only springs back into action after he, now working for a failing security company, hears the cries of distressed children after the ISIS-style ISS terrorists take over Chennai’s East Coast Mall. These terrorists are ruthless, as we can tell by the way that one of them back-hands a lady and traumatizes a crying girl. (among other things) ISS’s terrorists are led by Saif (Ankur Ajit Vikal), who spends most of the movie wearing a Latex mask that weirdly resembles Anton LaVey, and his traitorous accomplice, the Indian government’s unnamed Home Minister (Shaji Chen), as we see in an early scene.

The cartoonishly ruthless nature of Saif’s guys is a given. Or maybe it’s just not emphasized as often as Veera’s equally brutal counter-measures. There’s also nothing apologetic or conflicted about the violence in the movie, which is effectively played for kicks in a handful of action-intensive set pieces. In an early scene, Veera also slices off one masked villain’s arm by the elbow joint. And he stabs two ISS terrorists to death in front of a captive audience of mall hostages. Between murders, Veera plays dead in order to fake out his second victim. “This is all normal,” he tells the hostages after he knifes the second guy in the head. The crowd seems to believe Veera since, in a later scene, a very nervous civilian (prolific Tamil comedian Yogi Babu , of course) is beaten up by ISS’ terrorists, but refuses to snitch on Veera.

Vijay is not as inspiring in “Beast” as he was as recently as last year’s “Master,” though neither movie is disappointing. “Beast” only feels relatively minor because it’s overstuffed with tangential showcases for comic side characters, like peevish negotiator Althaf (Hollywood director Selvaraghavan) or bumbling security company boss Dominic (VTV Ganesh). Some of these characters are barely in the movie, like Veera’s love interest Preethi ( Pooja Hegde ) and her persistent fiancé Ram (Sathish Krishnan).

In time, the movie’s routine narrative digressions also seem normal enough since, according to Yogi Babu’s sub-pot, it takes a village to support Chennai’s own John McClane. Luckily, Vijay makes up for lost time during the movie’s energetic action scenes, most of which are as polished and well-designed as they need to be. Vijay’s dancing hasn’t improved much, but he looks more comfortable making photo booth-worthy faces (mostly pouts and snarls) while firing a big gun in slow-motion.

The key to enjoying “Beast” is accepting its inelegant, inconsistent, and often insane terms and conditions. There’s so much of everything—and in such haphazard portions!—that the main thing holding this thing together often seems to be the movie’s centralized location and Vijay’s abundant and well-advertised swagger. He’s almost as good as he needs to be here, and it’s hard to stay mad at a movie where bloody violence and/or corny jokes frequently break out in a mall that advertises for Basics, Pantaloons, and the Fruit Shop on Greams Road. Watching the movie’s ensemble cast members valiantly struggle to make this ungainly action-comedy seem even sort of normal is usually more engaging than the movie’s big action scenes, too. By the time Vijay breaks out his in-line skates, everything that doesn’t quite work about “Beast” only enhances the movie’s genuinely endearing too-much-ness.

Beast Movie Review (2022)

In ‘beast’, nelson and vijay join hands to deliver an underwhelming hostage drama.

Beast Movie Review in English

Beast Movie Cast & Crew

The first fifteen-odd minutes of Nelson's Beast show promise. The tone of Vijay's introduction scene is pleasantly low-key. (He plays a RAW field operative named Veeraraghavan.) There is a pretty decent action stretch. And we get a death that is as unexpected as the death of the little boys in Master . There, those boys died due to the hero's alcoholism. Here, the death is due to a betrayal, and it changes the Vijay character. He resigns from RAW and begins to see a therapist. A therapist ! At this point, I was genuinely surprised. Are we going to get a Vijay movie where the hero is really vulnerable, where his psyche is scarred like in Daniel Craig's Bond movies?

Five minutes later, I was slapping my forehead. for expecting all this. The therapist is making tasteless jokes. At a wedding, Pooja Hegde randomly makes a sort-of pass at Vijay and we launch into Anirudh's Arabic kuthu . And the mood established in the opening stretch is completely gone. I knew that Beast would not be a total drama. And I know that mainstream Indian cinema – especially one with our biggest star-hero – cannot do 100% justice to a genre. Here, the overall genre is action-adventure and the sub-genre is the hostage drama. So I did not go in expecting high-intensity thrills that keep you biting your nails, because they're going to keep diluting the genre with comedy and slo-mo hero worship and all that.

What I did not expect was that the rest of the movie – that is, after the opening stretch – would be so flat and so generic. I did not expect that so much of the cast – people like Yogi Babu or Redin or Pooja Hegde or poor Shine Tom Chacko – would be so underutilised. I did not expect the total lack of interest in exploring Vijay's trauma from his RAW days, something that could have given the film a real dramatic kick between the action moments. And I did not expect the other action scenes to be so underwhelming. There's a super-cool, kick-ass moment in the opening stretch that has Vijay walking on a wall while killing someone. We never get that kind of super-cool, kick-ass moment again.

But more than anything, I did not expect a Nelson film to have so little flavour. Agreed, he has made only two movies ( Kolamavu Kokila, Doctor ) – but they have such a distinct voice, such a distinct vision, and such wonderfully dark humour. And here, we actually get a line about Yogi Babu not wearing any underwear. A bulk of this so-called humour goes to VTV Ganesh and his character begins to grate on your nerves. The biggest laugh I got was in a scene where Vijay is talking to a terrorist in Hindi. Then he says: Chumma ellathayum Hindi-la translate pannitirukka mudiyadhu. Tamizh kathukko. I laughed at how sometimes, strangely, movies mirror real life. Because Beast started shooting long before the current controversy.

Also, why drag these genre films to 2 hours and 40 minutes? Why keep repeating tired old characters like the corrupt minister and the sick child and Muslim terrorists? But yes, it's a nice touch that Selvaraghavan's character is named Altaf Hussain. He is one of the good guys and he gives the film's only good performance as a government man resigned to taking orders from less-smart men. After a while, the flab in the film really begins to show, and we see Anirudh desperately trying to make things seem more exciting with his score.

Beast Review - Beastly performance by Vijay

Beast FDFS Review

One man and one knife - all it takes to solve a hostage situation. This story-line with any other hero would have backfired. Director Nelson weaves a story around an incredulous plot trusting one man, Vijay, who pulls it altogether, delivering a beast of a performance.

In Nelson's movies, comedy is typically mounted staged on a dark plot with good action sequences. In Beast , comedy for most part is predictable and falls flat a few times. What truly stands out is Vijay's style in which the fight sequence is choreographed. Vijay delivers monotoned funny one-liners as all heroes do in Nelson's movies. Credits to the director for presenting a supremely fit and suave Vijay. The entire theater goes ballistic in the recall dialogue from Pokiri , both during the interval and final scene.

VTV Ganesh is the new addition to the director's usual cast members. All the supporting actors probably didn't need any debrief as they showed up and acted exactly the same as in prior movies. Pooja Hegde's pairing with Vijay works and she does her part well in songs and opening scenes. For his first movie as an actor, Selvaraghavan does a decent enough job spouting dialogues to build up Vijay's enigma and justifying the title.

Next to Vijay, Anirudh is the man in form in Beast . The climax sequence could have been made fun for how a single man takes a fighter jet to Pakistan, and brings a terrorist back single-handedly. One could hear people saying Vijay should probably put an end to Russia-Ukraine war. That is how incredulous the rushed climax was. However, Anirudh totally saves the day with fantastic background score.

Manoj Paramahamsa's camera work is brilliant - both desaturated in the Georgia/Pakistan scenes and also contrastingly colourful in song sequences. Another technician who shines is the art director DRK Kiran, who has mounted a massive mall set with painstaking details to seamlessly match the scenes shot in real mall. The pleasing color palette of Arabic Kuthu and four seasons set in Jolly O Gymkhana are exceptional. Editing by Nirmal is crisp and ramped up and down focused on highlighting Vijay.

Beast has all the ingredients to attract the family audience in droves to the theatres. After a few minutes in to the movie, the audience will get desensitized to blood. Vijay is in exceptional form as he delivers a beastly performance. It is worth watching to admire Vijay's suave and fluent all round performance.

Beast movie review: Vijay shines in this mall invasion thriller that’s bogged down by flippant writing

Beast movie review: this vijay and pooja hegde film is a die hard-inspired thriller but suffers due to weak writing.

The most exciting factor about Beast when it was originally announced was the coming together of filmmaker Nelson and Vijay for the first time. After leaving a strong mark with his uniquely entertaining films such as Kolamavu Kokila and Doctor, Nelson takes a quantum leap to attempt something highly ambitious with Vijay, who is inarguably one of the biggest stars in the country. Beast, a Die Hard inspired invasion thriller, is Nelson’s attempt at going big in terms of vision and scale which is only let down by lethargic writing. Also read: Vijay opens up on entering politics: ‘If my fans want me to transform into Thalaivan, I can’t stop that change’

Vijay and Pooja Hegde in a still from Beast.

The film opens somewhere near Kashmir where Veeraraghavan (Vijay), a R&AW officer has been prepping for a mission for three months. At the last minute, the Indian government decides to call off the mission, but Veera decides to go ahead as per the original plan, against the orders of his own bosses. He manages to successfully execute the mission, but the outcome leaves him psychologically scarred, forcing him to quit service and return home for good. A few months later, he finds himself in the midst of a hostage situation.  He is trapped in a mall with his girlfriend as terrorists demand their leader (who was originally captured by Veera) to be released.

Nelson rose to fame with his terrific use of dark comedy in his first two films. His treatment of humour worked wonders in his movies and it even went on to define his style as a filmmaker. Unfortunately, his brand of comedy is barely present in Beast, which works more as a star vehicle aimed only to elevate Vijay’s star image. This attempt is justified with the film’s well-choreographed action sequences and exquisite visuals, but the absence of Nelson’s brand of comedy is a major dampener. Beast is still worth your time but it isn’t as wholesomely entertaining as Nelson’s earlier films. It is somewhat held together by Vijay, whose one-man show is thoroughly entertaining but isn’t enough to salvage an underwhelming film.

In bits and pieces, Beast lives up to all the pre-release hype. The action sequences, which were highly talked about much before release, stand out and Vijay kills it with his charisma in these scenes. This is Vijay’s most stylish film but it’s also one where the style supersedes substance so much that you can’t enjoy it after a point. If only the stylish treatment was strongly complemented by good writing, especially a stronger antagonist, the film wouldn’t have disappointed at places. As much as Nelson tries to stick to his storytelling template by introducing characters who aid the hero in the rescue mission just like in his last film Doctor; these aren’t as funny and memorable as they were in that film.

Beast Movie Launch Live News: Vijay starrer Beast is out in theatres. Written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Beast also stars Pooja Hegde in the lead role. The film’s trailer revealed that the action thriller is set inside a mall where terrorists have taken the customers as hostage. Unbeknownst to them, Vijay’s character Veera Raghavan is inside the mall and takes it upon himself to fight the terrorists. He is introduced as the “best and the most notorious spy” who is “meaner, leaner and stronger.”

In Vijay’s first televised interview in a decade with Sun TV, the actor was asked why he doesn’t give interviews. The Sarkar actor revealed that during his last interview, he was misinterpreted a bit, which discouraged him from giving further interviews.

“I think about 10 years ago, I had given an interview. And I felt my words were misinterpreted in that interview. I was not happy. Even my family members asked why I had spoken so arrogantly. I then had to call up the person concerned and explained to him that I didn’t mean it like that. And I can’t keep doing it to everyone all the time right. So, I keep away from interviews,” he said.

A few days ago, Vijay warned his fans to maintain decorum as Beast gets released in theatres. Bussy Anand, the General Secretary of Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (TVMI), said the members of the Iyakkam should not ridicule people holding positions in government, political leaders and others through posters, memes or social media. “We had already issued this advisory based on the instruction of our Thalapathy Vijay. We had initiated action against those who had violated this by removing them from the Iyakkam,” Anand said in a statement.

Actor Sivakarthikeyan tweeted, "Enjoyed watching #Beast and @actorvijay sir Vazthukkal @Nelsondilpkumar na @anirudhofficial sir @hegdepooja @manojdft sir and the entire team."

Vijay is one of the three superstars in Tamil cinema, besides Rajinikanth and Ajith Kumar, who rarely promotes his films. These stars have developed such a strong fan base across the world that people show up at the theatres without much persuasion.

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi told indianexpress.com that Beast is likely to attract cinegoers across India. He said, “Up in the North, it can start a new trend and push the envelope in terms of earning the loyalty of a whole new audience. Also, good PR has been done with Varun Dhawan releasing the Hindi trailer, and Shah Rukh Khan praising and congratulating the film’s director Nelson Dilipkumar and actor Vijay. The trailer and the soundtrack have been outstanding. It’s only a matter of time until the movie is viewed widely.”

As per film trade experts, Beast is likely to collect over Rs 40 crore in Tamil Nadu on opening day.

Film producer and distributor G. Dhananjayan said, “We all agree that Beast is going to make a record-breaking collection in Tamil cinema. It’s because of Vijay’s star image. Recently, a few producers and I estimated the film’s opening day collection. This film will collect a minimum of Rs 40 crore in just Tamil Nadu on day one. This collection is going to beat the previous records of Vijay. His movie Sarkar so far held the record for highest opening day collection and it was released during Deepavali holiday. But, this is not a holiday release."

There is a growing clamour about how the makers of  Beast  didn’t promote the Vijay-starrer in the Hindi belt. However, what many fail to comprehend is that it’s totally okay if not all stars want to jump in on the pan-India wagon. Vijay is clearly in this category. Read full story

Beast marks Vijay’s 65th film. The film went on floors last year. However, the shoot was halted after the second wave of Covid-19. Later, in April 2021, Vijay and Nelson left for Georgia, where the shooting resumed. Kalanithi Maran has bankrolled the film through his production company Sun Pictures.

Beast releases a day before KGF 2. Starring Yash, the sequel to the 2018 film is said to be the big release of the week as it is releasing across the country in multiple languages.

  4. Beast movie review & film summary (2022)

Advertisement. "Beast," a Kollywood (Tamil) star vehicle for Vijay, still feels different, if only for how vigorously its creators try to sell their lead as a 21st century renaissance man. 7. Beast Movie Review: Vijay Is Super-Chill In An Uncomplicated, Jolly

There's a fairly straightforward throughline in Beast that ensures this new Vijay film doesn't suffer from the same problems you've come to expect from the superstar's films. In an effort to make a Vijay film a "complete package" with a little bit of everything, especially since Atlee took over, you sense the makers throwing a lot at you assuming some of it sticks.

  8. Beast Movie Review: Nelson's Quirky Sense of Humour Vs. Vijay's Macho

Nelson continues this tradition of Pushpak and brings his films closer to absurd drama than any kind of emotional realism. And I think that was his forte. Sadly, Beast watches the clash of two distinct pathways. There is Nelson's style and there is Vijay's repertoire. And Vijay's repertoire demanded a lot of bravado, four songs ranging from typical mass appeal Kuthu Paatu to very, very ...

  9. Beast Movie Review: Nelson Loses And Vijay Gains In This Unremarkable

For a Nelson film, though, Beast is a step-down. From the very beginning, it sheds its quirky Nelson-ness for genre-conformation. It becomes rather ordinary pretty soon. It takes a textbook approach to setups and callbacks. It follows an obvious Vijay film template in political dialogues and self-references. It disproportionately worships its hero.
