Description

The book explores emerging themes, concepts, and issues in ethnic tourism, through examination of theoretical underpinnings and empirical research in various ethnic destinations worldwide. It encapsulates cultural, environmental, and economic dimensions of ethnic tourism, which is a force of change in many ethnic communities and suggests means through which local benefits can be enhanced and costs reduced. This book presents a range of case studies from diverse well-known ethnic destinations which reveal the various outcomes and changes engendered by ethnic tourism, such as the commodification of ethnic culture, the exploitation of minority peoples by outsiders, and the impact of wider forces of modernization and national integration policies. It summarizes what has been done so far and suggests initiatives to increase the contribution of tourism to the economic development and quality of life of ethnic communities. It brings together a diversity of perspectives that are not currently readily available in one location. The book will appeal to students, and scholars interested in social sciences, tourism studies, geography, anthropology, sociology and economics, as well as in applied disciplines such as planning. It addresses academic and professional audiences that are interested in tourism and its consequences, as well as those who are interested in ethnic, including indigenous peoples, and their circumstances.

Ethnic tourism is motivated by tourists’ search for exotic cultural experiences through interaction with distinctive minority groups (Yang and Wall 2014 ), and the desire of those groups to use aspects of their culture to create economic opportunities. It provides the chance for tourists to experience aspects of unique cultures, landscapes, and ways of life. It has been promoted globally as a strategy for economic development and cultural preservation in several ethnic areas, particularly as such minority groups are relatively disadvantaged when compared to the majority population and their culture may be viewed as one of their strongest assets. Appreciating historical relics and ethnic architectureThere is no doubt that the Thousand Miao Village is a beautiful and spectacular stockade. The Miao Family Wooden Building built on the mountain, the Miao Family Ah Ma dressed in ethnic embroidery, and the thousands of lights dotted at night are really very beautiful.
Experiencing unique folk activitiesDong people are still relatively simple and hospitable. if you meet any happy event there, you can wrap a small red envelope, and then you can experience participating in folk weddings and enjoying delicious wedding ceremonies.
Getting close to natureLet everyone really feel the green mountains and green waters and feel the wonderful time of Dong village.
Enhancing feelingsYes, I took my mother, my baby and my luggage to Guizhou. I told my mother that I would take you back to basics and live in the original Miao village for a few days. A circle of friends who call friends has received a quick response from former colleagues and current neighbors.
Enjoying leisure and relaxationI don’t need any reason to walk, maybe I want to relieve my bad mood and state recently, maybe I just need a strange environment to settle myself, maybe, where there are so many, maybe, I only know that you will find the answer you want on the road. If you want to stay away from a modern city, find a peaceful world, feel yourself in nature, and return to the beginning, Guizhou is undoubtedly a good place to go.

Ethnic tourism and Folksongs: A case study among the Blang (Bulang) of Yunnan, China

In 2008 “Blang Nationality’s Singing and Instrument Playing” ( Bulangzu tanchang ) was listed as China’s intangible cultural heritage protection. The creation of ethnic parks, cultural villages, and ecomuseums in Southwest China raises some questions about the ethnic minorities’ traditional cultural/musical heritage and its sustainable development: What is the impact of ethnic tourism development on local minorities and what is the role played by government cultural policy in the preservation and dissemination of Blang musical heritage? How is this ethnic group’s identity represented in staged performances for tourists and in mass media? And what is the agency of Blang culture bearers officially appointed ‘cultural heritage inheritors’ in constructing, defining, and representing their own ethnic/musical identity? This article deals with a research project conducted mainly among the Blang of Manxi village in Xishuangbanna (Sipsongpanna), Yunnan Province, Southwest China, in the Spring of 2017. The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze the current interplay of ethnic tourism, government policy, mass media and culture bearers among an ethnic group considered a “minority among the minorities” in China and the effects of this interplay on the sustainability of traditional musical heritage.

Ethnic Tourism: A Case Study of Language and Culture Preservation of the Bateq Indigenous Group of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia

Salasiah Che Lah

English Language Studies, School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 11800, Penang, Malaysia

Malaysia provides ethnic tourism which is related to the more popularly known as nature or eco-tourism where an indigenous or traditional group of people who live in this environment will interact with and provide services to the tourists who would like to experience ethnic tourism. Ethnic tourism refers to travel motivated by the search for the first hand, authentic and sometimes intimate contact with people whose ethnic and/or cultural background is different from the tourists. Tourists are also driven by the desire to see some of the threatened cultures that may soon disappear through assimilation into the nation’s majority. This paper aims to explore ethnic tourism as a preservation strategy for language and culture in a selected community of Bateq Orang Asli group in Peninsular Malaysia in relation the language and cultural preservation of this community. An in-depth interview, a qualitative research technique, was selected as a method of data collection. The multimedia data was also collected including the recordings of the indigenous languages, still pictures and videotapes of the indigenous and cultural activities. The findings of this study show that the Bateq Orang Asli groups have preferences of their languages even though there is a pattern that a high number of lexical items have been borrowed from Malay. Language shift among younger speakers is also becoming a trend. In terms of the preservation of cultural heritage, the Bateq Orang Asli are still very positive about keeping their practices and lifestyles. The involvement of Bateq Orang Asli in promoting ethnic tourism in the surrounding areas near their settlements has contributed to their language and cultural preservation.
