Bona Fide & How To Write One (To Get Your New Zealand Visitor Visa)

Depending on which country you’re from, you can stay in New Zealand for 3 months under a Visitor Visa. But what if circumstances cause you to stay there for longer than 3 months? This is when you need to write a bona fide.

Hence, this post is for you if you need to write up a bona fide to get a visitor’s visa (specifically the one for New Zealand).

It may also serve as a useful reference even if you are not going to New Zealand.

Why Did My Bona Fide Get Rejected By The NZ Immigration?

Types of visitor visa new zealand.

To put it simply, this visa will allow you to travel in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months . You can visit friends, go for a sports event, etc.

And you can even study for a total of 3 months.

But there should absolutely be no working on your part – not for food, money or accommodation.

There are 2 types of Visitor Visa in New Zealand:

Visa Waiver Visitor Visa (Waiver Country)

As of 1 October, 2019 anyone from the 60 waiver countries listed will now have to pay for an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. That includes Malaysia! More details below under requirements for a visitor visa to New Zealand.

The maximum number of months you can stay in New Zealand with this visa is 3 months for non-UK citizens. UK citizens get to stay up to 6 months with this visa.

You don’t need any documentation except your passport and a return ticket for this visa when you arrive at the immigration in New Zealand.

And if all goes well, you should get a stamp in your passport from the respective officer.

For this visa, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you fill out your arrival card as honestly as possible.

• It’s possible to extend your stay in New Zealand (e.g. after your 6 months’ working holiday is complete) with this visa.
• However, if you’re already in New Zealand: y ou’ll have to first fly out of the country first and show proof of sufficient funds (for up to 3 months, including your return ticket or the ticket receipt).

But this blog post is mainly focusing on the other type of visitor visa:

Visitor Visa

This visa cost me $165 NZD back in 2018 and lets you stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months.

Note: As of 17th May 2022, the cost of applying for the visitor visa increased to $246.

Provided that you have not already exceeded a total of 9 months’ stay in New Zealand in an 18 month period.

In contrast to the previous Visitor Visa (Country Waiver):

You need all sorts of paperwork as evidence that you will be a genuine visitor.

Don’t put this off to the last minute because it really does take the immigration office a long time to process applications for the Visitor Visa.

For your reference, I submitted my application in May 21, 2018 and got the Visa in June 13, 2018 – a total of 18 working days.

• If rejected, you must apply for the Visa again (and pay$246 fee again – ouch).
• Read the guidelines on the official site carefully before applying.
• Try to apply at least a month ahead of your intended start date too.

Requirements For Visitor Visa New Zealand

Nzeta and ivl for visa waiver travellers.

What is this the NZeTA?

All would-be visitors (including transit) to New Zealand must check if they need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before going to New Zealand.

Besides this NZeTA, you may have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) too.

Who’s applicable?

• Anyone visiting or in-transit from a visa waiver country (see the list of visa waiver countries )
• Permanent residents of Australia
• Anyone travelling on a passport from a transit visa waiver country who will be in transit through Auckland International Airport on the way out to another country
• Even cruise ship passengers from visa waiver countries must have an NZeTA.

Who’s not applicable for the NZeTa?

• Anyone who needs a visa for New Zealand or is already holding a valid one (this includes a Permanent Resident Visa)
• New Zealand citizens
• Australian citizen travelling with Australia passport

How do I apply for the NZeTa?

There are 2 methods:

• NZeTA online request system on immigration.govt.nz
• Download the immigration App and apply through there.

When to apply for the NZeTa:

It takes up to 72 hours for your NZeTA to be approved so do so way before your trip to avoid being barred from boarding the plane!

How much will application cost?

The cost of the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) will be NZD $35 and will be charged together in the same transaction as your NZeTA:

If you apply online , it will be NZD $12 + NZD $35 = NZD $47

And if you apply through their app , it will be NZD $9 + NZD $35 = NZD $44

How long are my NZeTA and IVL valid for?

They are valid for multiple visits and up to a maximum of 2 years .

Criteria You Have To Meet For A Visitor Visa

• Be able to prove your identity
• Have good health or acknowledge (and prove) that you will pay for your own health care
• Most importantly, you have to be a genuine tourist – no funny business or working under table.
• You can apply for your family in the same application but you have to pay the fees per head
• Prove that you have sufficient funds needed to travel around and a ticket to get out of New Zealand later (or have evidence of a sponsorship)
• No major criminal offenses or previous denial to a visa from another country – you might be able to talk your way out of this one through your bona fide but there is no guarantee

You also need these:

Paperwork For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

These are the things you have to upload together with your online application on the official New Zealand immigration website:

Tip: The client number is not the visa waiver stamp number on your passport in case you are wondering. You can leave this blank unless you do have one from a previous application.

• Bona fide letter
• Chest x-ray documentation – it cost me $160 to do it in Auckland (back in 2018). If it’s cheaper in your own country, do that instead. Check the official website for the list of panel clinics in your country.
• Resume or CV – it goes without saying that this should be your most recent resume
• Bank statement –  at least $1000 NZD** for every month (per person and including accommodation) you intend to stay (not including the money for the flight tickets!)
• A scanned softcopy of your passport (make sure your passport validity covers the duration of your intended stay!)
• Passport photo – Save some money and do this in your own country.

It cost me $25 NZD to get it done at the post office in a small town in New Zealand. Check out the passport photo do’s and don’t’s on the official website first !

**Alternatively, you just need to show that you have:

• At least $400 NZD per month per person together with proof of payment for your accommodation in New Zealand
• A financial sponsor to cover you during your stay in New Zealand

More Information On The Chest X-ray Requirement

• The clinic submitted the x-ray form to the immigration office on my behalf.
• Note that your x-ray must come from a panel clinic listed on the official New Zealand immigration website.
• When I last checked, there were only two acceptable clinics for Malaysia. One was a clinic in Kuala Lumpur and another one was located in Penang.
• Auckland however, has many panel clinics – the one I went to was walking distance from my rented house.

What Is A Bonafide?

To start with, a bona fide can be a cover letter that explains your background and purpose of visiting the country that you wish to apply for.

It may also include your future plans after your intended time in the country you visit. And that is the case if you want to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa.

The bona fide should serve to clear any doubts the immigration may have on your true intentions:

You can therefore also explain why you don’t intend to permanently immigrate to New Zealand. For example, proof of a steady business in your home country. Or several properties that you own and manage in your own country.

Another important reason for a bonafide is to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (without having to work there), and be able to fly out of the country on the designated date.

Why Do You Need A Bona fide?

New Zealand immigration requires a black and white softcopy of such a document.

You can upload it online together with the other documents listed above. After making a RealMe account (an easy and straightforward process in itself).

Use the bona fide letter to tie all your evidence together (not literally, of course!).

When I wrote my own bona fide, I wasn’t sure whether it would even be approved or not. There were no templates to follow and the instructions on the official New Zealand immigration site were very general.

Bona Fide Sample Letter

Disclaimer – Using this template or following the guidelines below will not guarantee your success in obtaining a visa (from whichever country you are trying to apply for) by using this template. I’m just sharing what worked for me back in 2018 when I successfully applied and obtained an extended visitor visa (with just one application) to stay longer in New Zealand with my then-boyfriend who had a NZ Working Holiday Visa.

Guidelines To Writing A Bona Fide For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

I based the following guidelines on what I could piece together from various sources online.

• Firstly, state why you want the visitor visa. (e.g. for me, my main reason was to follow my then-boyfriend who successfully obtained a working holiday visa. I included his visa application number here at this point.) Mention what you plan to do while in New Zealand. It should be very clear that you are not going to set up a business or work part time while you are there.
• Include a summary of your travel plans – just put it into one of your first paragraphs. If you have a detailed plan, you can attached it together with the cover letter.
• Next, write something on your family background. The purpose is to show that your roots are still in your own country and it’s highly unlikely you would move to New Zealand.
• Education background – short summary will do
• Working background – write a short summary on your working history and add your current resume to the upload
• Health background – if you have any major ailments, here is where you can mention those. I think you will have a higher chance of getting your visa approved if you’re relatively healthy. Otherwise, make sure your bank statements reflect that you can cover your own medical expenses.
• Travel background – your intention to travel to New Zealand for a holiday appears more credible if you have already been to other countries for a holiday before. List them down together with the year and month of travel as well as the duration of each trip. State what the purpose of each trip was and if you had any problems obtaining a Visa for those. Drop old Visa numbers here if you still have them.

Tip: Please make sure to include how long you want to stay (an exact date would be best). Do not take for granted that they will grant you 9 months – they won’t . Ask for multiple entry as well.

Ending Your Bona Fide Cover Letter For A Visitor Visa

Besides all of the above, I added more details on our travel plans (by month) in New Zealand as well as our current  New Zealand address and phone number. I even put our camper car’s license plate number and my boyfriend’s New Zealand working history.

If you need to leave New Zealand and re-enter again during your holiday duration in New Zealand, please request for it.

Explain why you would need a multiple-entry Visa . Put down the exact date you plan to leave New Zealand (i.e. the last day of your holiday) if you can too. They will not grant you 9 months by default.

At the very end of my bona fide cover letter, I shared my future travel plans after New Zealand to emphasize that I would not be migrating to New Zealand in the future.

My last point was to drop my email address and ask them to contact me if there were any questions (They didn’t have any questions though).

After writing your letter, covert it into a pdf and upload it together with the other documents.

As of May 2022, visa application processing for the Visitor Visa can take anywhere between 44 days to 5 months. Check here for the latest update .

Back in 2018, it was 21 days and if successful, you should get an email from the New Zealand immigration that contains your client number and your visitor visa. The expiry date will be clearly stated too.

Moreover, if you did request for multiple-entry and the request got through, it will be stated there too. Good luck in your application!

Making Changes After Your Visa Has Been Approved

Let’s say you need to change your visa conditions to multiple-entry. Or, you want to extend further.

Here are some things to consider:

• You have to pay the fee of $165 NZD again (now $246 NZD) and submit online again but with the previous supporting documents with some exceptions (e.g. update bank statement and cover letter)
• The X-ray certificate is valid for up to 3 years
• Use the same passport photo you uploaded last time if you still look the same.

Before you go through all the effort of extending your current visitor visa, consider the possibility of flying out of New Zealand before the end of your visa and coming back with the visitor waiver visa.

For example, if your visitor visa happens to end on Jan 1, 2019. You could fly out of New Zealand and come back with the visitor visa (waiver country) then.

But what if you’ve already used the visitor visa (waiver) before?

According to the immigration officer I called, my visitor waiver visa record (I previously used 2 of 3 allowed months) reset when I obtained the longer visitor visa.

In fact, he said as long as I leave the country before Jan 1, 2019, I could come back in using my refreshed visitor waiver visa (i.e. another 3 months).

Don’t forget:

The same conditions still apply for the visitor waiver visa – e.g. return ticket out of New Zealand and proof of sufficient funds during your visit to New Zealand

Working Holiday Visa For New Zealand

Or you could try your luck with the Working Holiday visa (if you were never successfully granted one before and you are still less than 31 years old.

The immigration office will unfortunately not state the reason for your application getting rejected.

So to answer this question, think back on what you wrote in your bona fide. Did you give them reason to suspect your real intentions of going to New Zealand?

Reasons A Bona Fide Will Be Rejected By The NZ Immigration

Here are some possible reasons why your bona fide was rejected based on what is listed on the NZ immigration official website (and also my own thoughts on the matter):

• Evidence and content in your bona fide (as well as previous applications) don’t match up
• There is cause to believe that your actual reason for visiting New Zealand is false (e.g., different from you wrote on your visa application or arrival card) or unlawful
• It appears doubtful that you will follow the conditions of your visa (e.g., previous visa rejection from another country, lack of sufficient funds, previous breach of visa conditions, etc)
• You are missing some necessary documents to return to your home country (this is why having a return flight ticket might increase your chances of getting your application approved)
• You’ve exceed the maximum length of stay possible for your circumstances and country of origin
• Your country of origin is not in the visa waiver country list (this might affect your chances of success)
• Your passport validity is not long enough (I.e., expiry date must be at least 3 months after the indented date of your visit)

When they say lawful purposes, they mean any of the following – you are going to New Zealand simply for a holidaying or sightseeing, to visit friends and relatives, training or studying in New Zealand for 3 months or less, for your wedding or a business consultation, or to participate in an amateur sports event.

Other reasons they may accept include getting medical treatment in New Zealand. Or if you have a personal invitation from the the NZ government.

Whatever, the reason, you are NOT ALLOWED to work in New Zealand during the duration of your stay if you are holding a Visitor Visa.

Note: Applicable to both Visa Waiver Visitor Visa and Visitor Visa

Furthermore, if you’re travelling with a partner, you have to prove your relationship (a screenshot of your chat history is not good enough) and they must have a clear record too (e.g. following their visa conditions, no previous visa rejections or criminal records, etc).

By now, you should at least know how to get started on your New Zealand bona fide – that pesky (but unfortunately crucial) letter that stands between you and a visitor visa.

Don’t forget to specify exactly when you want the visa to end (no more than 9 months in a 12 month period). Or else, the immigration office will do it for you and they will put the bare minimum (the date of your flight).

We really recommend you to call the NZ immigration office yourself before your trip as they have the latest information on visas. It takes a while to get through to the office so list down all your questions first!

Applying by group just needs one bona fide letter, I believe.

By the way, I have also asked the immigration office before, you still have to pay the application fee per head either way. In case you were thinking it might save some money.

New Zealand Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa): Eligibility, Requirements and Application Process

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is the general tourist visa available to non-visa-waiver nationalities.

Applications can be lodged either online or on paper. It’s cheaper and simpler to do it online as you won’t have to pay fees for a Visa Application Center and couriers. It’s also recommended by the New Zealand Immigration.

Quick summary:

• Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
• Validity: Valid for 6 months if single entry, or 3-5 years if multiple entry
• Multiple entries: Not more than 6 months in any 12-month period
• Single entry: 9 months
• Visa fee: Up to 246 NZD (if applied online)
• Processing time: 80% of applications are processed within 4 weeks

Visitor visa validity

In most cases, the New Zealand visitor visa is valid for 3 years with multiple entries.

For Chinese passports, the visa is valid for 5 years, whereas for US passports, the validity is 4 years.

Single-entry visitor visas have 6 months validity.

If your passport expires before that, you are allowed to transfer your visa to your new passport. 

Duration of stay

Multiple-entry visas let you visit New Zealand for up to 6 months at a time. You can spend a maximum of 6 months within any 12 months. 

For example, if you stay in New Zealand for 4 months from January 1 to May 1, then leave and come back on June 1, you will only be allowed to stay 2 more months, i.e. until August 1. Afterwards, you can return to New Zealand no earlier than January 1.

Single-entry visas allow you to stay a maximum of 9 months. This visa cannot allow you to stay in New Zealand for more than 9 months within the last 18 months, for example, if you had another visa before that.

Allowed number of entries

Most New Zealand Visitor visas allow multiple entries.

Single-entry visas are issued if you express your need to stay in New Zealand for longer than 6 months.

Allowed ports of entry

You can enter through any international airport or port.

If you arrive in New Zealand in a different location by private yacht or private aircraft, you must report to a customs port or airport without delay and complete an arrival card there. 

When to apply

• Earliest: 3 months before you travel
• Latest: 1 month before you travel

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements

Who requires a visitor visa.

The New Zealand Visitor Visa is required for all nationalities who want to travel to New Zealand for tourism, EXCEPT for:

• Australian passport holders
• Travelers from visa-waiver countries (they must obtain an NZeTA )
• Transit passengers through Auckland International Airport not leaving the transit area (must obtain NZeTA or Transit Visa depending on eligibility)

Documents required

Include as many documents to support your application as you can. You have to satisfy New Zealand Immigration that:

• You are who you say you are
• You won’t be a risk to public health
• You are of good character without a substantial criminal record and not a threat to the public
• You have enough money to support yourself
• You are a genuine tourist visitor who will not overstay or work illegally.

To do this, attach the following documents:

Identity Documents

• Valid Passport or certificate of identity (valid for at least 3 more months after the intended departure date from New Zealand)
• 1 acceptable photo (for online applications)
• Residence Permit or Visa (if you live in a country different from your citizenship)

Health Documents

• normally nothing required
• Chest X-ray but only if you come from or have spent at least 3 months in the past 5 years in a country that doesn’t have a low incidence of tuberculosis .
• Chest X-ray regardless of where you come from
• Medical Certificate

Character Documents

• Normally nothing required
• You must disclose any criminal record or character issues

Proof of Funds Documents

Include documents that show you have at least 1000 NZD per month, or 400 NZD per month if you’ve already paid for your accommodation. For example:

• Bank statements
• Credit card statements
• Traveler cheques
• Proof of booked and paid accommodation 

Genuine Visitor Documents (Bona-fides)

• Explanation of the reasons for your trip
• Hotel bookings
• Tickets for attractions or events
• Transportation tickets
• Passport pages with entry and exit stamps
• Copy of the letter from that country’s immigration authority declining your application (OR)
• A written explanation of why your application was not successful if the original letter is not available.
• Citizenship statuses
• Evidence of Employment, e.g. leave approval letter from employer with expected return date and pay slips
• Evidence of Study, e.g. university letter, student identity card
• Evidence of Relationships, e.g. family register, marriage certificate
• Evidence of Assets, e.g. deed of ownership for property, proof of business ownership
• Evidence you receive a pension, e.g. retirement certificate, pension slips

Photo requirements

For online applications , your photo must be:

• between 500 KB and 3 MB
• between 900 x 1,200 pixels and 2,250 x 3,000 pixels
• JPG or JPEG format.

For paper applications , your photo must be:

• 35 mm wide and 45 mm high

All photos must:

• Be in portrait, not landscape
• Have even lighting with minimal shadowing
• Be in color, showing natural skin tones
• Be in focus, not blurry
• Not contain red-eye
• Be an unedited original
• Not be a selfie
• Be taken 1.5 meters from the face
• Be taken against a plain, light-colored (but not white) background with no patterns or objects
• Only contain plain clothing patterns
• facing straight to the camera
• Keeping your eyes open and mouth closed
• Not smiling or frowning
• Having long hair tucked behind the ears
• Not wearing any sunglasses or hats (prescription glasses are allowed if there is no reflected light or glare)
• Religious head coverings are allowed as long as your face and hairline are visible

Visitor visa fee

The Visa fee for paper applications depends on your country and the Visa Application Center (VAC) you apply at. You will also have to pay a VAC processing fee and for courier service.

If you apply online, the visa fee for most nationalities is 246 NZD. This includes the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of 35 NZD.

Citizens of the following Pacific Island Nations pay 171 NZD.

• Federated States of Micronesia
• Marshall Islands
• Papua New Guinea
• Solomon Islands

Processing time

As of the time of writing, 80% of all applications are processed within 4 weeks.

How to apply for visitor visa.

• You plan to stay for more than 3 months (or 6 months for UK residents).
• You do not meet the criteria of good character, such as having a criminal conviction.
• Your health is not in good condition, or you are coming to NZ for medical consultation or treatment.

 You can check whether your country is on the list of visa waiver countries on the official website of New Zealand Immigration.  

Note: It is not required to have both an NZeTA and a visitor visa.

Visitor Visa Application (1017) for Non-Online Applications

If you cannot apply online or prefer a paper application, you can use the Visitor Visa Application form (1017) for non-online applications. This traditional method requires you to fill out the necessary forms and provide physical copies of your supporting documents.

Make sure to complete the form thoroughly and accurately, providing truthful details in uppercase letters. Additionally, enclose two identical photos of yourself, captured within the last six months, and inscribe your full name on the back of each photo.

Required Documents for New Zealand Visitor Visa

Employment certificate, financial documents, and income tax return (ITR) are the staples of most visa applications. But there is one document that is usually overlooked — the cover letter.

A cover letter isn’t always a requirement when applying for a visa. However, it’s something that we often recommend to add to your pile of documents, especially if there is no interview and you have some explaining to do.

You see, sometimes, things don’t always fit the mold perfectly. There are cases wherein you can’t provide the exact document needed, but you have a very good alternative. Or maybe you just can’t provide something at all, but you have a perfectly valid reason. Or perhaps you’re traveling with a group or for a special purpose. These instances could probably benefit from a well-crafted explanation to give the visa officer a clearer picture of your situation.

When I apply for a visa, I usually submit a cover letter regardless of whether or not it’s one of the requirements. I always want to give a summary of my application and clarify some aspects that may be prone to misinterpretation.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What should be in a cover letter?

For me, a good cover letter must be able to provide the following:

• A short introduction about yourself.
• Your travel dates and the purpose of your trip
• If traveling with a group: your companions and your relationship with them
• If sponsored: your sponsor’s name, your relationship with them, and the reason why they are willing to sponsor you
• If you’re missing some requirements: the reason why you won’t be able to provide them and the alternatives you are submitting instead
• If applying for a double entry or multiple entry visa: the reason why you need to be allowed more than one entry
• A quick rundown of the destinations you will be visiting
• A quick summary of your travel history (if any), highlighting that you have NEVER violated visa rules in the past
• A promise to return to your home country in time

Looks like a lot, huh? But here’s the thing: According to a couple of friends who used to work as visa officers at strict embassies, they usually had very little time to assess each application. Hence, if you’re going to make a cover letter, go straight to the point . One page should be enough. The key is being concise — finding the balance between giving enough information and keeping it short and sweet.

Here are some samples. I intentionally used complicated situations to give you an idea how I usually explain them. If they don’t apply to you, feel free to modify these to match your case. Please use this only as a model for your own cover letter. Please do not copy-paste the whole thing without adjustments.

Hello, I will be applying for a Japan visa and will submit a cover letter din. I have a few questions:

• If I am traveling with friends pero we will be submitting individual applications, do I need to include that in the cover letter na I am with them on this trip?
• Do you need to submit all your savings account o kahit isa nalang?
• Plan ko rin sana (dahil nabasa ko sa ibang posts nyo hehe) na payroll and savings account ipasa, pero kung nililipat ko rin naman yung laman ng payroll sa savings, need ko pa ba isubmit yung payroll account?
• Sa ibang Japan visa application na napanuod ko, nagsusubmit sila ng bank certificate at bank statement. Do I need to do that?
• If yes, need ko ba explain sa cover letter ko na tinatransfer ko sa digital bank muna yung pera saka ko tinatransfer sa savings account? (kasi baka makita, if may bank statement, na nanggaling sa ganitong account yung pumasok na pera)

1. You may indicate your companions. Ako I prefer na imention sila to show na travel with friends talaga.

2. OK lang kahit isa lang kung sa tingin mo strong enough ung account na yun. Pwede ring madami if feeling mo di enough ung isa lang.

3. Naeempty ba ung payroll account when u transfer?

4. Bank cert lang naman ang need ng Japan so kahit walang statement, ok lang.

5. If hindi ka magsusubmit ng statement, di na need iexplain kasi hindi lalabas. :)

I plan to visit Canada and have started my visa application. I selected visit friend for purpose instead of tourism as I would like to be fully honest with my application. My very purpose is to be with my boyfriend and meet his family and friends. Touring comes as a bonus. Would it be fine to add captions or narrations on the pdf document together with our pictures as proof? I also have our hotel and tour bookings and his boarding passes on the two times that he has visited me here in PH. This is the Proof of Relationship section on the application visa.

How to write a great stand out Cover Letter

"The cover letter is a claim for the role – it is your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.

It is a targeted single-page document to the person who advertised the position. It is often your first point of contact with an employer/recruiter to get them interested in reading your CV and interviewing you."

Your Cover Letter should show:

- Why you are interested in the role - Your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments - Evidence that you have researched the company and that you would be a good fit.

Structuring the Cover Letter:

Before you start the main part of the letter, write your mobile number, email address and Skype ID at the top left-hand side of the letter. Follow this by the date and then write Re: followed by the title of the job you are applying for and a reference number if it’s provided. Check the listing carefully as this reference is often at the end of the ad. Then follow with a greeting, addressing the person by name (if at all possible).

Open with a strong statement giving the reason you are applying for the position.

What you have you been doing, relevant to the role you are applying for. Be skills/achievements focused and focused on what you can bring to the company rather than what the company can do for you.

What kind of person are you (hint: mention your qualities which are aligned to the role)

Your motivation for wanting to settle in NZ and why you want to live in that particular area. Invite the reader to contact you if they have any questions about your application.

If a contact person is mentioned in the listing, it is recommended that you make a connection, preferably by phoning them, so that you can introduce yourself and ask some questions about the role. That way your application will stand out. ‍

In conclusion, in your cover letter you need to present a strong case for the best matched skills and experience against the job description.

Never send out a generic letter as this is one way to communicate that you have not tried to research the role or the company, and that you are not genuinely interested.

But for a lot of people, the process to be granted a visa can seem daunting and unclear. The submitted passport must meet the parameters given below

• It must be provided with the copies of the recent and the old passports.
• It must be valid for 6 months ahead of the span of stay.
• It must be original and genuine.
• It must have minimum two blank pages for the visa stamp.
• It must not be torn, ripped, split, or damaged in any kind of way.

One cannot cross international boundries without the passport. It is considered a criminal offense otherwise.

An old passport is a passport that has expired or is completely stamped. In the visa processing, it is required to track the travel history of the applicant.

If available, the old passport must also be provided meeting the given criteria

• If any of the traveler has old passport, it must be submitted along with latest passport.
• It must be original and in a good condition to access the required information.

The photo is provided to the authority so that you can be identified based on the same.

The photographs must be provided as per the given photo specifications

• It must be clicked on an all white background.
• Two copies to be submitted with general photo guidelines.

• It must cover face 80% of the frame.

• The ears must be visible clearly.
• It must not have any headgear worn apart from religious reasons.
• It is to be taken care that your teeth do not show in the photograph.

Recent pictures are mandatory as old pictures can cause the authorities to reject your application.

An air ticket is a ticket or pass that is possessed by the traveller who is taking a flight for travelling from one location to another.

It is an important document and it should be submitted for the given reason

• The air ticket has to be booked for the complete round trip.
• It must be confirmed for the complete round trip.

An air ticket shows your course of travel and confirms your return to the native country.

Covering Letter consists of traveler's information, Itenarary, detailed travel Information, trip expense details and your return guarantee to the home country.

The covering letter provided by the visa applicant should be acceptable based on the following guidelines

• It must mention other details as well as per the Consular's request.
• It must mention the accommodation details of the applicant.
• It must mention the person who will be bearing all the expenses during the trip, if not travelling alone.
• It must specify the traveller's relationship with the fellow travellers if not travelling alone.
• It must clearly specify the traveller's purpose of visit.
• It must mention the travel dates as per the invitation letter or the booked flight tickets.
• It must mention all the details as per the passport.

Bank statement is a document that issued from the bank. This is obtained for the savings bank account to show ratify if you will be able to support your stay in the country.

The Bank statement is a mandatory document and it should meet the following criteria

• It must be printed on an Any size paper.
• It must be provided with authentic seal and signature from the bank.
• It must be original and obtained from the savings bank account.
• It must be evident of healthy balance amount in the account.
• It must be original and should have the bank's stamp and signature on every page.

If the Bank Statement doesn't show enough funds or shows irrelevant expenditure, it could lead to visa rejection on financial means. Professional visa consultation is recommended.

An income tax return is a document that is a record of the tax that is paid to the government by the concerned tax paying citizen.

The proof of income tax returns must match the provided parameters

• The Income tax returns should be specified with an ITR-V for last 3 years.

The Salary slip is a crucial document. It must be provided by following the criteria given below

• It must mention the company's name and the applicant's designation as well.

The letter of invitation submitted should match the following criteria

• It must mention the invitee's details such as the contact details, profession details, visa status and citizenship proof.
• It must specify who is going to bear the expenses of the trip.

An invitation letter from a family/friend whom you are visiting is essential to ratify the genuiness of your purpose of visit or even provide proof of accomodation.

A resident permit is a document provided by the embassy of the respective government to the foreigners who are willing to stay in the country as residents.

• It must be submitted at the time when the invitee is staying abroad on a resident permit.

In case the visa permit copy of the invitee is not submitted, the applicant may not be allowed to visit the country providing the purpose of visiting acquaintances.

Passport is a mandatory document that is required at the time of international travels. The submitted passport must meet the parameters given below

• It must be provided as invitee's proof of identification and for the required personal information.
• It must be a copy of the first and the last page.

Failing to provide invitee's passport copy when requested may get the visa delayed or rejected on the basis of the absence of proof of purpose of travel/accommodation.

Any proof that proves your relationship with your family member living in the foreign country.

Required when visiting family members. It identifies the authenticity of your relationship with the invitee.

• It can be provided as different kinds of documents like a utility bill, gas bill, leave or lease agreement, electricity bill, water bill, etc.

Address proof of the invitee is important to rectify the proof of accommodation provided.

A Leave Sanction Letter is provided by the employer so that the visa applicant can apply for the visa issuance ensuring that he has no intentions to stay back in the country and shall return to the job on notice.

The Leave Sanction letter provided should meet the following requirements

• It must be signed by the authority with their designation and the name and stamp of th company.
• It must mention the applicant's name as per the passport along with the designation and their duration of stay.
• It must be on the company's letterhead addressed to "to whomever it may concern.".

Eligibility for getting New Zealand Vfr Visa:

Be a genuine traveller- You must have a valid and good intention behind travelling to the country.

Kia Ora, I'm in NZ on a visitor visa and I will need a job offer to get a work visa. The headline of my CV & Resume shows: Visa: Visitor Visa (Applying for a Work and Permanent Resident Visa). although can't do these applications right now. In addition my resume includes a sentence like If considered for this position I will require a job offer from you to process the work visa application. Would you recommend to write it like this? I want to put my cards on the table, otherwise I need to reveal in the interview anyway. Thank you so much for any hints!

I understand that you want to be honest, but I believe that that, as a first line, will get your application immediately thrown into the waste basket. In my opinion, you need to set out early on all the good things about your qualifications and work experience which may make the employer think you are worth considering. It may help if they are already thinking, 'This looks good,' before they find that you don't yet have a work visa.

Hi JandM, thanks for your answer, that's a good point. So you recommend to remove the Visa status from the header (I actually meant the header of the page, not the headline) and just leave the second sentence (which is in the last paragraph of the cover letter).

I was an external auditor for two years with an overseas professional qualification. I had no luck in securing any interviews after 2-3 months of job search on my own. During this period, I have also met up with two local recruiters. Even then, that didnt help with my job search. I guess this also depends on the location of where you're looking for jobs and Im currently in Christchurch. Job opportunities in this area seems to be quite limited. I was lucky enough to have submitted one of the job applications through another recruiting agency who got in touch and got me two interviews almost immediately. Even though the interviews went well, I didnt end up getting the offer anyway as I didnt have a work visa at that time. My temporary partnership based work visa just came through last week and my job search is still ongoing as of now. On a side note, I did not state in my CV that I didnt have a work visa and I believe stating that would kinda ruin any chances you might have. But be honest with your situation during interviews. I am also currently volunteering as I think some local references would be of some help. A well polished CV is also really important so dont be afraid to ask for feedback from recruiters. Be careful about volunteering. INZ requires a person to have one of the same range of visas for work, for volunteering. 'Gain or reward' includes any payment or benefit that can be valued in terms of money, such as board and lodging, goods (e.g. food or clothing) and services (e.g. transport).

I came on visitor visa and applied for jobs.. i did not mention anything about my visa on cv... Had 2 interviews but did not get job cz of visaa.... Got 3rd one... In all the interviews, i told the emmployer about visa and job offer after proving that i am capable of thia position.. Keep trying brother...

Thinking about to delete the sentence about the visa, maybe to reveal it during the interview is a smarter way because I can still try to show my suitability for the position. Btw. I did quite a bit of volunteering when I had the work & holiday visa and point it out as referees on my CV. Still it looks like that not many people are trying to get into the country on a visitor visa. Another possibility for me would be the Silver Fern Visa for 2016, but a quota of 300 per year sounds like a gamble.

In most cases , INZ wouldn't give you any trouble on the point, but, as with all legal matters, it is possible that an official can nit-pick. For instance, 'Oh, you got free morning tea every day you attended. Aha, you had the right to park your car on the private grounds, and you didn't have to move it if you went to do your shopping round the corner. Those perks were gain or reward, so you should have had a work visa.' I know this sounds ridiculous, but there have been just a few cases where such tiny matters were used as grounds for refusal, which is why it is worth my saying to anyone thinking of volunteering that they should bear this in mind, and BE CAREFUL.
