Pop Culture and the Rise of Social Media in the Philippines: An Overview
It is somewhat amusing that children in their formative years use technology as though it is a basic necessity for their development. With this statement alone, it is undeniable that commercial advancements in technology and the facility of the world-wide web creates a sort of transcendence in a faster and inclusive way that is not possible in the physical world. Nevertheless, if this very modern concept, if not an advent of a futuristic one, would be collapsed in the confines of a perspective of a still developing nation, what would be the outcome? This study aims to look at the rise of New Media and social media in the Philippines, as well as its effect on the promotion of popular culture on the media consumers of the country. It will focus on several facets of Philippine contemporary life such as the political, economic, and social, and connect it with the cultural. By the end of this paper, there will be predictions regarding the future of the Philippine experience under these said circumstances should the current state of media in the country not change, a sort of an analysis that would allow readers to initiate their own introspection regarding media use.

ABSTRACT The Internet has constantly been changing our lives ever since, especially through the usage of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Ordinary people have begun to post their own opinion or criticism in a certain topic, for the world to see (Hauben, 1996). Because of this, the social media has not been just a fad of everyday life but has been an alleged contributor, if not a facilitator, of social demonstrations as exemplified in the Arab Springs, or the uprisings that had occurred on some Arab countries (Lever, 2010). Now, as the country runs in turmoil and cussedness on the misuse and apparent embezzlement of the Priority Development Assistance Fund or PDAF, several thousands of Filipinos had gathered at the Quirino Grandstand last August 26 in protest, as they had called on the abolishment of the PDAF. Apparently, several news broadcasting companies had proclaimed that the mobilisation now famed as the "Million People March", was widely communicated in social networking websites; Facebook and Twitter playing the same "role" they have had in the Arab Springs. The objective of this paper is to incite whether or not social media facilitated the recent Million People March through an interview of the said netizen-proponent of the mobilisation, and a review of the posts this proponent has communicated to other netizens from the very first day of creating the Facebook "event" up to the actual mobilisation, and if he or she has followedthrough the aftermath of the march. The impact of the netizen's posts will likewise be measured through opinion-sharing throughout the websites (likes, comments, personal messages to the proponent, if any), and an interview to some of the persons who had actually committed in going to the event, as well as those who declined, or answered maybe. The researcher will also check the probable effects of TV and print media news reports about the role of the netizens in the arousal, organisation, and mobilisation of the march with the "Agenda-Setting theory"of McCombs and Shaw -- if ever these media had only exaggerated the role of netizens in the mobilisation and/or if they have influenced other netizens to join the march by such a promotion.

In China youth subcultures were long located out of the public eye. Only over the last thirty years, due to their rapid development, they drew greater popular attention. One of the reasons behind the growth of youth subcultures in China is the Internet. The Internet constitutes a convenient communication platform for the creation of discussion boards, finding spiritual and avocation partners, and for a free exchange of ideas. During the last few years skateboarding subculture has become increasingly popular. Originating in the United States, this youth subculture is experiencing the phenomenon of globalization, which reflects not only the generation gap, but also embodies a hidden appeal to escape the shackles of society and transform existing values. For instance, one of the basic values that skateboarders pursue both in the United States and China is a sense of freedom. Yet the meaning of freedom differs in China. The elder age of the participants compared to the United States, the special attitudes towards youth in China, the strong influence of tradition, family and social pressure, and other factors all contribute to its different perception. Based on interviews with skateboarders in Beijing this research provides a valuable insight into the local characteristics of China’s skateboarding subculture; specifically its development path, reasons for popularity, and the transformation of values amongst the contemporary Chinese youth.
