35 Petyr Baelish Quotes From Game Of Thrones' Littlefinger

Games of Thrones Atmosphere at the Game of Thrones Season 6 Premiere Screening at the TCL Chinese Theater IMAX

Lord Baelish, also known as "Littlefinger", is the 'Master of Coins' in the council of King Robert Baratheon.

When we meet first meet him, Lord Baelish comes across as an unlikely ally to the Starks in King's Landing. Unfortunately, we find out soon enough as the story progresses that the only attachment this man has, is to himself.

Growing up as an orphan with the Tullys, his ambition and cunning are the only things that have turned that sickly little boy into a powerful man.

His claim that he has loved Catelyn Stark like no other and his confession of his love to Sansa turn out to be false, as we come to know that he is the reason for the beginning of their downfall.

From the poisoning of Jon Arryn to selling Sansa to the Boltons, it was all his doing. We cannot help but cheer for Sansa when after years of manipulation, she finally beats Lord Baelish at his own game.

That is why to appreciate all the lessons Lord Baelish taught us, we have compiled a list of Littlefinger quotes for fans to enjoy.

10 Valid Reasons Fans Weren’t Happy With The Boys Season 4

13 darkest and most hopeless episodes of the walking dead, ranked, 10 harsh realities of rewatching the sopranos 25 years later.

Game of Thrones had some impressive, entertaining, fun, and unique characters. Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen) was one of the best, and smartest characters in the whole show, which also made him one of the most quotable, maybe only exceeded by Tyron Lannister (Peter Dinklage). Here are Littlefinger’s 10 best quotes, ranked.

10 “Gold wins wars, not soldiers.”

Littlefinger - Gold wins wars

Littlefinger was one of the smartest, most conniving, and most dangerous characters in all of Game of Thrones, as he killed with ideas, rumors, and collaboration, and not with a sword. He was also a very smart and pragmatic man, and quotes like this one showed why. He always went the extra mile to understand every situation and align himself with the real power holders, those who usually killed with words, influence, and money, but not weapons.

9 “Brothels make a much better investment than ships, I’ve found. Wh*res rarely sink.”

Littlefinger - brothels make

This pearl of wisdom is said in only the fifth episode of the show, when the audience is still learning who Littlefinger is and how he thinks. It’s also a great way to show how pragmatic, smart, and practical the character is, as he knows how to get rich. What’s not said, but it’s also implied, is that having brothels is also a great way to get information and dirt on every person in King's Landing, which he can later use to his advantage. These are the kinds of commentaries that made Littlefinger one of the most hated characters on the show.

8 “I have only loved one woman. One woman, my entire life. Your sister.”

Littlefinger - I only loved one woman

This might be Littlefinger’s most sincere moment in the whole series, and yet it’s also used in the most ruthless, cruelest way possible, as he only wants to hurt Lysa Arryn (Kate Dickie), before killing her by throwing her through the moon door and letting her fall to her death. For some, this might’ve been the moment the character became a villain, until they think that he started the war between Lannisters and Starks by convincing Lysa to kill her husband.

About that revelation and how that helped the actor become Littlefinger, the actor told Vulture : “I think a lot of why he became the person he became is because he was someone who loved a girl, who he could have had a chance with but was rejected by. And there was the humiliation of getting sliced with the sword [by Catelyn’s first fiancé, Brandon Stark] and being laughed at. He became a person who is never going to let that happen to him again.”

7 “I don’t want friends like me.”

Littlefinger - I don't want friends like me

There’s never been a more “I know who I am” quote than this one, as Littlefinger knew he was conniving and untrustworthy, looking for power and having no conscience, so, of course, he wouldn’t want a friend like him. The character loved to be the smartest man in every room he entered, and the way to do that was by aligning himself with people he knew he could control, or at least understood their motives for doing what they did.

Aidan Gillen is one of the actors who read the books , and he must’ve been continually delighted about what his character was thinking, doing, and especially saying in the novels by George R.R. Martin.

6 “So many men, they risk so little. They spend their lives avoiding danger. And then they die. I’d risk everything to get what I want.”

Littlefinger - So many men

Littlefinger knew how dangerous the Game of Thrones was, and yet he almost always won it, by taking risks, knowing with whom to ally, and negotiating the best deal possible for himself. He might’ve been a Lannister friend when they conspired to kill Ned Stark (Sean Bean), but he then saw how Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) would mess up the Reign, as he was too unpredictable to control, so he decided it was time to get new friends in the Tyrells.

It was one of his riskiest moves, but one that paid dividends, as he had the good graces of the new Queen, and got Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) in the process. A win-win for him and the Realm, although not for Joffrey…

5 “Sometimes, when I try to understand a person’s motives, I play a little game…”

Littlefinger - Sometimes

Another of Littlefinger’s lessons to Sansa Stark, as the full quote says: “Sometimes, when I try to understand a person’s motives, I play a little game. I assume the worst. What’s the worst reason they could possibly have for saying what they say, or doing what they do? Then I ask myself, how well does that reason explain what they say and what they do?”

In this case, he was trying to make her understand why people do certain things, and, with that knowledge, try to anticipate their moves. As with another quote in this list, this was said back to him before his death, as what he never thought was that Sansa was as smart and conniving as him, and that she also had the help of her brother, Brann (Isaac Hempstead Wright), who could see the past, and explain all the misdeeds Littlefinger had done against the Stark family.

4 “I did warn you not to trust me”

Littlefinger - I warned you

This was a great end-of-episode moment, and also confirmed how out of his depth Ned Stark (Sean Bean) was in King’s Landing, as honor and doing the right thing were the last things everyone was thinking about (except him). This happened in the first season of the show, when audiences still thought this was an usual story where the good, morally correct guys won, and this moment was one of the earlier times they saw this wasn’t how Game of Thrones worked.

It might’ve also been one of the best moments in Littlefinger’s life, as he had resented the Starks since he was a young kid. His treason was one of the reasons Ned Stark ended how he did, in one of the most rewatchable episodes of the show ever made.

3 “Don’t fight in The North or The South. Fight every battle, everywhere, always, in your mind.”

Game of Thrones Episode 7.2 Photos Tease an Intense Confrontation

What Littlefinger says to Sansa is actually a longer quote: "Don’t fight in The North or The South. Fight every battle, everywhere, always, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy. Everyone is your friend. Every possible series of events is happening at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something you’ve seen before.”

This quote explains perfectly why the character was always several steps ahead of every other person in King’s Landing. He was never surprised, and never left without words, because he had already thought this could happen and had plans B, C, and Z to survive that event, and transform it into an advantage for himself.

2 “There’s no justice in this world. Not unless we make it”

littlefinger-game-of-thrones

This could’ve been Littlefinger’s motto if he had a family crest, as it was his philosophy and explained why he acted the way he did. The character felt he had been wronged many times, and everything he did, and every person he crossed, deserved it, making his own personal justice.

What’s also interesting about this quote is that it brought about his demise. He said it to Sansa Stark to justify her marrying Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), and that decision bit him in the ass when the Stark kids got revenge on him. So much so, that Sansa even repeated these same words to him before they ended his life.

1 “Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder.”

Chaos is a Ladder

This is Littlefinger’s most-known quote; the one that proved how ruthless, smart, and scary he really was. It was also proof of how masterful he was at climbing the chaos ladder, as things always went his way (at least back then in season three). He said this while talking with Varys (Conleth Hill), another of the powerful thinkers in the Realm, who also knew how to use information to his advantage. This was also the moment that the audience understood the difference between them, as Littlefinger’s theory is much more dangerous than how Varys looks at everything, trying to get the best position possible while still trying to make the best decision for the realm.

About what Littlefinger’s end goal was, Gillen told Esquire : “You know, I've used the term everything before. I want everything. Definitely power and influence, but the thrill of seeing plans open up like dangerous origami. I didn't prepare that phrase.”

Petyr Baelish

Petyr "Little Finger" Baelish famous quotes

We only make peace with our enemies my Lord. That's why it's called "Making Peace"

I'd risk everything to get what I want

Everyone is your enemy, everyone is your friend, every possible series of events is happening all at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something that you've seen before

Only by admitting what we are can we get what we want

A man with no motive is a man no one suspects

A lot can happen between now and never

It doesn't matter what we want, once we get it, then we want something else

Petyr Baelish: Sansa, I beg you! Sansa Stark: Thank you for all your many lessons, Lord Baelish. I will never forget them.
Petyr Baelish: Sometimes when I try to understand a person's motives, I play a little game. I assume the worst. What's the worst reason they could possibly have for saying what they say and doing what they do? Then I ask myself, "How well does that reason explain what they say and what they do?"
Petyr Baelish: Forced from your home, driven out to the wilds beyond the Wall. I imagine you've seen things most men wouldn't believe. To go through all of that and make your way home again only to find such chaos in the world, I can only imagine... Bran Stark: Chaos is a ladder.
Petyr Baelish (to Sansa) : Don't fight in the North or the South. Fight every battle, everywhere, always, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy, everyone is your friend... every possible series of events is happening all at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something that you've seen before.
Petyr Baelish: I love Sansa, as I loved her mother. Jon Snow: Touch my sister, and I'll kill you myself.
Petyr Baelish: Why aren't you happy? What do you want that you do not have? Sansa Stark: At the moment, peace and quiet. No need to seize the last word, Lord Baelish. I'll assume it was something clever.

Quote from Game of Thrones 6x10 - Petyr Baelish (to Sansa): Every time I'm faced with a decision, I close my eyes and see the same picture. Whenever I consider an action, I ask myself will this action help to make this picture a reality? Pull it out of my mind and into the world? And I only act if the answer is yes. A picture of me on the Iron Throne... and you by my side.

Sansa Stark: You said you would protect me. Petyr Baelish: And I will. You must believe me when I tell you that I will. Sansa Stark: I don't believe you anymore. I don't need you anymore. You can't protect me. You won't even be able to protect yourself if I tell Brienne to cut you down. And why shouldn't I? Petyr Baelish: Do you want me to beg for my life? If that's what you want, I will. Whatever you ask that is in my power, I will do. Sansa Stark: What if I want you to die here and now? Petyr Baelish: Then I will die. Sansa Stark: You freed me from the monsters who murdered my family and you gave me to other monsters who murdered my family. Go back to Moat Cailin. My brother and I will take back the North on our own. I never want to see you again.
Petyr Baelish (to Sansa) : You've been running all your life. Terrible things happened to your family and you weep. You sit alone in a darkened room, mourning their fates. You've been a bystander to tragedy from the day they executed your father. Stop being a bystander. Do you hear me? Stop running. There's no justice in the world. Not unless we make it. You loved your family. Avenge them.
Petyr Baelish: A lot can happen between now and never. If you want to build a better home, first you must demolish the old one.
Lysa Arryn: What wife would do for you the things I've done for you? What wife would trust you the way I've trusted you? When you gave me those drops and told me to pour them into Jon's wine, my husband's wine... when you told me to write a letter to Cat telling her it was the Lannisters... Petyr Baelish: The deed is done. Faded into nothing. Only speaking of it can make it real.
Petyr Baelish: The first Lords of the Vale didn't have much, but they had these mountains and they knew how to use them. And the fortress they built here has never been overcome. Not once in 1,000 years. Know your strengths, use them wisely, and one man can be worth 10,000.
Petyr Baelish: So many men, they risk so little. They spend their lives avoiding danger. And they die. I'd risk everything to get what I want. Sansa Stark: And what do you want? Petyr Baelish: Everything.
Petyr Baelish: Money buys a man's silence for a time. A bolt in the heart buys it forever.
Petyr Baelish: A story we agree to tell each other over and over till we forget that it's a lie. Varys: But what do we have left once we abandon the lie? Chaos. A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all. Petyr Baelish: Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but they refuse. They cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Quotes: Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Balish’s Best Lines Ahead Of The Season 6 Premiere

Tyler McCarthy

While “Game of Thrones” has a lot of larger-than-life characters , one man stands above the rest as the most influential person in Westeros. Since Season 1, the man who began as a brothel owner has risen in the ranks to become one of the most powerful string-pullers in the entire history of the kingdom.

Lord Petyr Baelish, better known as Littlefinger, came from humble beginnings. His biggest claim to fame was getting beat up by Rickard Stark because he was in love with Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), then a Tully at the time. Since then, he’s revealed that he’s behind most of the biggest events in Westeros, such as [SPOILER ALERT] the murder of Jon Arryn (John Standing) and Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson). With the Season 6 premiere on HBO just days away, now is a perfect time to remind one’s self about how influential and clever this character really is. To help with that, below is a rundown of some of Littlefinger’s best quotes.

When He Became Self-Aware “You know what I learnt losing that duel? I learnt that I'll never win. Not that way. That's their game, their rules. I'm not going to fight them: I'm going to f--- them. That's what I know, that's what I am, and only by admitting what we are can we get what we want.”

When He Told Us How He Really Feels “Ah, the Starks! Quick tempers, slow minds.”

When He Was Actually Kind Of Empowering “People die at their dinner tables. They die in their beds. They die squatting over their chamber pots. Everybody dies sooner or later. And don’t worry about your death. Worry about your life. Take charge of your life for as long as it lasts.”

When He Let Someone Down As Gently As He Could “I have only loved one woman, only one, my entire life… Your sister.”

When He Broke Down Diplomacy “We only make peace with our enemies, my lord. That's why it's called ‘making peace.’”

When He Described Upward Mobility “Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb. They refuse, they cling to the realm, or the gods, or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.”

When He Gave His Version Of A Locker Room Pep Talk “Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you. Remember that, Sansa [Sophie Turner], when you come to play the game.”

When He Smiles And We All Know Something Is Up

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 premieres on Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.

“You know what I learnt losing that duel? I learnt that I’ll never win. Not that way. That’s their game, their rules. I’m not going to fight them, I’m going to f**k them. That’s what I know, that’s what I am, and only by admitting what we are can we get what we want.”

Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish bid adieu from Game of Thrones in the season 7 finale. While there’s so much you can hate about Lord Baelish, you can’t deny the fact that manipulative Llittlefinger was a clever man.

He believed in mind games and he was getting away with everything, or so he thought. In the beginning of the season, Lord Baelish advised Sansa,

“Fight every battle, everywhere, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy. Everyone is your friend. Every possible series of events is happening all at once. “

Perhaps he lost sight of it all after 4 episodes and fell for the classiest GOT trap of all time, laid by the Stark children.

While Twitter is rejoicing the death of Lord Baelish , who had it coming, we bring to you some of the wisest things he has ever said. Because it’s proof that the worst villain of all time, was and will always be a clever man in Westeros.

According to Catelyn Stark , his cat-like eyes show no emotion when he smiles.

Petyr is an incredibly cunning man with exceptional finance skills. He is ambitious and a bold boy with little fear. Though he is intelligent, littlefinger is subtle, and most people think he is weak. When Tyrion arrived at King’s Landing, he discovered that people trusted Petyr because they looked down on him, whereas the lord is a highly skilled and dangerous man.

For his attire, littlefinger wears a slashed cream and silver velvet doublet, a plum-colored doublet embroidered with his arms, a black grey-sleeved velvet doublet, and a blue velvet tunic. He owns capes of different colors, and his cloaks got patterned with the shape of mockingbirds.

Petyr Baelish Biography

Petyr Baelish has a Braavosi ancestry. His great-grandfather was a Braavosi sellsword in service of Lord Corbray, and his son became a hedge knight who took the head of the Titan of Braavos as his sigil. Petyr’s father became a minor lord on one of the remotest lands of the fingers. During the War of the Ninepenny Kings, he befriended Lord Hoster Tully of Riverrun ; this enabled Petyr to become a ward of Hoster.

While at Riverrun, Petyr got fostered alongside Hoster Tully’s children, Catelyn, Lysa, and Edmure. Because of his height, Edmure Tully nicknamed him littlefinger, and the name stuck for the rest of his life. He grew closer to the Tully children and once ate mud pies cooked by Catelyn and her sister, which made him sick for a week. As he grew older, Petyr fell in love with Catelyn, but she never returned the affection as she only saw him as a brother. Her sister, on the other hand, Lysa, fell in love with him and would allow him to kiss her.

Upon learning that Catelyn got betrothed to Brandon Stark, the heir to Winterfell , Petyr tried showing his love by kissing Cat during a dance. She shoved him away and laughed at him, making him get drunk. While in a state of stupor, Lysa came to Petyr, and believing she was Catelyn, they slept together; this made him think Catelyn gave him her maidenhead.

When Catelyn’s wedding date got announced, Petyr challenged Brandon to a fight. He got severely wounded during the duel. After recovering from his wounds, Hoster sent him away. However, before leaving, he slept with Lysa and thought he had claimed the maidenhead of the Tully sisters. Lya later got pregnant, but her father forced her to abort the child because littlefinger was of low birth.

Rise to Power

After Brandon’s death at the hands of King Aerys II Targaryen , Petyr sent a letter to Catelyn, but she burnt it without reading it. She later married Lord Eddard Stark , and her sister married Lord Jon Aryyn during Robert’s Rebellion. After the Mad King’s death, Robert Baratheon became King, and Lord Arryn became the Hand of the King . Littlefinger maintained a relationship with Lysa, and she convinced her husband to give Petyr control over the customs at Gulltown.

After increasing the income tenfold, Jon brought Petyr to the royal court to serve on King Robert Baratheon’s small council as the master of coin. Petyr built a network of influence and placed people loyal to him in many positions. He created a complex system of loans and revenue generators to ensure the King never went short of gold. He continues his relationship with Lady Lysa Arryn. When she learns her husband plans to send her son, Young Robert, to be fostered at Dragonstone by Stannis Baratheon , she asks Petyr for a potion and kills her husband.

Relevance in A Song of Ice and Fire

A game of thrones.

After Jon Arryn’s death, Robert Baratheon asks Lord Eddard Stark to become the Hand of the King. Bran Stark slips into a coma after getting thrown off a tower by Ser Jaime Lannister . An assassin tries to kill him with a Valyrian steel dagger.

After the assassin’s death, Catelyn travels to King’s Landing and meets Petyr, who lies he lost the blade to Tyrion Lannister . He hides her true identity and takes Ned to meet her. He then vows to help Ned uncover the truth behind the assassination of Jon Arryn.

When Robert holds a small council meeting about Daenerys Targaryen , Petyr agrees that she should get assassinated. Later Ned discovers Cersei’s illegitimacy and asks for Petyr’s help. When he confronts Cersei, she arranges for her husband’s accident, and the King dies. When Ned tries to seize the throne, Petyr betrays him, and he gets arrested for treason. He holds Jeyne Poole in his custody while Arya Stark flees.

A Clash of Kings

After the deaths of Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon, Lord Tywin Lannister sends his son Tyrion Lannister to serve as the acting Hand of the King . On getting to King’s Landing, Tyrion realizes how connected Petyr is, and the lord suggests the Iron Throne spread false rumors about Stannis’s daughter, Selyse.

When Renly Baratheon gets killed, he sends him to negotiate a Lannister-Tyrell alliance between King Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell . Petyr succeeds, and Stannis gets defeated. After the battle, littlefinger gets rewarded with the title of Lord Paramount of the Trident and Lord of Harrenhal. He maintains communication with Sansa through Ser Dontos Hollard.

A Storm of Swords

After Sansa meets with Lady Olenna Tyrell , Petyr warns Tywin of Tyrells plot to wed Sansa to Willas Tyrell; this makes Tywin hastily marry his son to her. Due to his high status, Petyr gets considered as a husband for Lysa Arryn, and he leaves King’s Landing. However, he stays near the city and waits.

Joffrey gets killed, and Sansa leaves King Landing to Petyrs custody. He reveals he and Olenna planned Joffrey’s murder and tells her he also plotted for Tyrion to get killed as that would make Sansa a widow. He dyes her hair and makes her his bastard daughter Alayne Stone.

When Petyr reaches the Eyrie, Lysa makes him the Lord Protector of the Vale. When she catches him kissing Sansa, she almost pushes the young girl out of the Moon Door. However, Petyr comes in time to save Sansa. Lysa then reveals how they killed her husband and wrote the letter that made House Stark hate the Lannisters. Petyr eventually pushes Lysa through the Moon Door.

A Feast for Crows

After Lysa’s death, the Lords of the Vale plan to remove Petyr from his position. During a meeting with the Lords Declarant at the Eyrie, Petyr tells Sansa he will place some of the lords on his payroll and effectively gains their support. He teaches Sansa more about politics and how to influence others .

A Dance with Dragons

After the Red Wedding , the Lannisters bring a northern girl and claim she is Arya stark. They give her to Ramsay Bolton as a wife to seal the alliance between the Iron throne and House Bolton. Meanwhile, the girl is Jeyne Poole, who got trained while being kept in one of Petyr’s brothels. With the help of Theon Greyjoy , Jeyne escapes Winterfell and meets Stannis’s host.

Appearance in Adaptation

In HBO’s Game of Thrones, Aidan Gillen portrayed Petyr Baelish. He appeared in seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 and starred in 41 episodes. After Jon Arryn’s death, Petyr meets Varys in the throne room. After Joffrey’s death, Petyr travels to the Eyrie, where he marries Lysa Arryn. However, Lysa gets jealous of Sansa and tells her she and Petyr had their wedding night long before they got married. She reveals the truth to Sansa but gets killed.

After her death, Lord Yohn Royce questions Petyr about Lysa’s death, but he is not found guilty. When Jon snow becomes King in the North and Sansa becomes the Lady of Winterfell, Petyr gets sentenced to death for his hand in the war between the Stark and Lannisters. Arya slits his throat.

Petyr Baelish: The Smartest Man

It is without a doubt that Petyr Baelish is the most intelligent man in Westeros. Besides his exceptional skills in finance and commerce, he is a true player of the game of thrones. Having come from humble beginnings, he was able to work his way to the top through manipulation and careful planning.

After becoming master of coin, he still singlehandedly engineered a war between the Starks and Lannisters and became one of the most powerful lords in the Seven Kingdoms. What makes Petyr truly a genius is that he planned everything without leaving a trace; this makes him a true political genius.

Did Petyr hate Eddard Stark?

Yes. Petyr had many reasons to hate Lord Eddard Stark. First, Ned married Catelyn, the woman Petyr loved, and he was an overly honorable man who looked down on people that played dirty; this infuriated Petyr.

Why did Petyr engineer the problems of King’s Landing?

He wanted power. Having come from a minor house, Petyr experienced the brutality of being a nobody. However, his intelligence took him to the top. On getting to the pinnacle, he realized he wanted to be more than a servant. He craved to control the Iron Throne; this led to him devising the plans to wreck King’s Landing.

A Canceled Game of Thrones Spinoff Has Been Brought Back To Life

Logan director has harsh words for cinematic universes following wolverine's mcu debut, one deadpool & wolverine cameo proves fancasting is bad.

In Game of Thrones season 3, episode 6 "The Climb," Lord Varys sneaks up on Lord Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger in the throne room and finds him gazing intently at the Iron Throne. Varys who works as Master of Whisperers on Joffrey Baratheon's small council, walks towards Master of Coin, Baelish, wanting to engage him in a conversation about the symbolic power of the throne. "A thousand blades, taken from the hands of Aegon's fallen enemies. Forged in the fiery breath of Balerion the Dread," he says to his fellow councilor. But before Varys has the chance to say more, Baelish refutes the claim saying he's counted that the Iron Throne barely has two hundred blades.

While Baelish would much rather keep looking at the royal chair, the snarky and argumentative Varys downplays the allure of the Iron Throne by describing it as an "ugly old thing" and "the Lysa Arryn of chairs." He makes the latter comparison in the personal context of Baelish's life. Disguised as an insult at the throne, the remark, "the Lysa Arryn of chairs" is meant to hit Baelish where it hurts. The crown is in the middle of a war with Robb Stark and his bannermen, and Tywin Lannister is doing everything in his power to crush this rebellion. Regardless, it's still time before Game of Thrones ' storytelling and subtext put into perspective what Baelish is about to say to Varys about the power of chaos.

Littlefinger Says Titles Seem To Breed Titles

Lord Petyr Baelish and Lord Varys in Game of Thrones.

In Game of Thrones season 3, episode 3, "Walk of Punishment," Lord Tywin calls a small council meeting and Baelish aka Littlefinger pushes past everyone to occupy the seat to his left. Varys sits in the second-closest chair. After chastising the council for not knowing Jaime Lannister's whereabouts, Tywin asks for updates. Varys informs him Robb Stark and most of his bannermen are in Riverrun for Lord Hoster Tully's funeral, and that Roose Bolton holds Harrenhal in his absence. Meant to be a jab at Littlefinger's promotion as Lord of Harrenhal, Varys points out that Bolton holding the castle makes him the lord in practice if not on paper. To that, Tywin says he'll let Roose have the castle that's turned into rubble, adding, the title alone is enough to make Baelish a worthy suitor for Jon Arryn's widow, Lysa.

Varys pulls a face and Baelish thanks Tywin saying that he and Lysa Arryn have known each other since childhood and that she's fond of him. At this point, Grand Maester Pycelle chimes in and says that a successful courtship with Lysa will make Baelish acting Lord of the Vale. In other words, Robb Stark who has rebelled against the crown will have no choice but to cross off Aunt Lysa and Vale from his list of allies. With that, Tywin dispatches Baelish to Eyrie to bring Lysa into the fold. While these developments take place at a macro level on the small council, the truth is, at the end of the day, every Game of Thrones character seated at the table is driven by their own agendas.

Littlefinger's Machinations

Baelish and Varys in Game of Thrones.

Varys rightly describes Littlefinger as the most dangerous man in Westeros to Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones season 3, episode 4, "And Now His Watch Is Ended." He brokers Sansa Stark's marriage with Olenna's grandson, Ser Loras. He asserts that the Stark girl is the key to the North, should her brother, Robb Stark fall. Varys does so after finding from Ros that Baelish plans to take Sansa Stark with him to Eyrie. Baelish, who on the other hand, is one step ahead of the game, finds out about the Tyrell-Stark marriage plot through his spy Olyvar in Game of Thrones season 3, episode 5 "Kissed by Fire." He relays the information to Tywin who then outplots the Tyrells by arranging Tyrion's marriage to Sansa. This marriage alliance will give his house control of Winterfell and the North.

Varys maintains he arranged the Stark-Tyrell marriage for the good of the realm, emphasizing that they will birth a pit of chaos if they stop caring about the welfare of the realm . Baelish says the word chaos has a certain ring to it and tells his adversary that chaos isn't a pit but a ladder to advance one's interests. He creates chaos to turn people against people and takes advantage of their differences to reach his desired destination. It's what he did when he gave Lysa the Tears of Lys to poison her husband, Jon Arryn. He made her write a letter to Catelyn, claiming it was the Lannisters who murdered Jon, thus sparking the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters.

Baelish betrayed the one woman he claimed to love - Catelyn Stark - and turned her against her sister, Lysa. Ned Stark was dead because of his treachery. Later, he got rid of Lysa by pushing her through the Moon Door and took power in the Vale. He sold Sansa to the Boltons and in doing so, he was able to climb the flight of stairs to the Iron Throne . He could only go so far, and it truly was a full circle moment when Sansa exposed him and had him executed for treason and murder in Game of Thrones season 7, episode 7 "The Dragon and the Wolf." Thus, Varys' words that chaos is a gaping pit came true and Baelish got what he deserved in the end.

‘Game of Thrones’: Littlefinger’s ‘Fight Every Battle’ Speech Was an Insight Into His Mind — and Advice on How to Watch the Show

Littlefinger has not, strictly speaking, been among the most significant characters on “ Game of Thrones ” this season. Jon and Daenerys just had their long-awaited first meeting, which was as tense and eloquent as we’ve been hoping; Cersei and Jaime are once again proving that, even and especially when their backs are against the wall, their claws are as long and sharp as ever; Euron is filling the void left by Ramsay Bolton and positioning himself as the show’s newest villain.

Petyr Baelish has found himself waiting in the wings of late, but on last night’s episode we saw him briefly emerge from the shadows to offer advice to Sansa — and, perhaps, to us as well.

That this happens while Jon is far from Winterfell attempting to persuade Daenerys to part with her dragonglass is no coincidence — nothing ever is with him. We’ve seen Littlefinger attempt to drive a wedge between Sansa and her half-brother (who’s actually her cousin, not that either of them know it yet) since the knowing look he gave her just moments after Jon was declared King in the North. That was clearly a sign of things to come, which are coming into clearer focus with each new episode.

Aidan Gillen on

For a few moments last night, however, he almost seemed sincere as he advised Sansa not to forget that worrying about one threat leaves you blind to all others:

“Don’t fight in the North or the South. Fight every battle everywhere, always, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy, everyone is your friend. Every possible series of events is happening all at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something that you’ve seen before.”

Sansa has so far done an admirable job of rebuffing Littlefinger’s increasingly obvious attempts to manipulate her; just moments before this speech, she’d sarcastically thanked him for his wise counsel after he warned her to be wary of Cersei. (Also not to be forgotten: her incredible burn from the premiere two weeks back in which she said, “No need to seize the last word, Lord Baelish. I’ll assume it was something clever.”) Perhaps aware of her distrust, he offers her a genuine glimpse inside his five-steps-ahead mental process.

It’s not only Littefinger’s most arresting speech since the character-defining  “chaos is a ladder” monologue from season three, but one of the few times he’s offered real advice that, at least on the surface, doesn’t come with an ulterior motive. Think how many clever people we’ve seen lose the game of thrones — the ever-intelligent Olenna Tyrell perished just this episode, and Dany’s best-laid plans for conquest are already falling apart.

Simply surviving counts as a victory in Westeros, and few have proven more adaptable than Littlefinger. Better men have died because of him, and braver warriors have been felled as he stood back and watched. As the show moves ever closer to the end and even more key players depart, we’d all do well to follow his advice so as not to be surprised — or, more likely, devastated — by what happens when the last few pieces move into place.

Sansa Stark has a hugely satisfying scene in this week’s ‘Game of Thrones’ episode

Warning: Huge spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season six.

"Game of Thrones" season six episode five wasn’t all gloom and doom. There was one moment that was extremely cathartic for fans to watch.

In episode five, "The Door," fans watched as Sansa dressed down Littlefinger for giving her away to the Boltons and allowing her to marry the sadistic Ramsay Bolton.

Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger journeyed up to Mole Town, the town south of Castle Black, with the knights of the Vale to come to Sansa’s aid. Along with Brienne, Sansa went to go see him, but the reunion wasn’t a happy one. She reprimanded him for leaving her with the Boltons and encouraging her to marry Ramsay.

"Did you know about Ramsay?" Sansa asks Littlefinger immediately. "If you didn’t know you’re an idiot, if you did know you’re my enemy."

Littlefinger tries to apologize to Sansa, to tell her he didn’t know and he "underestimated a stranger," but she’s having none of it. She proceeds to tell him how Ramsay abused her and that she can still feel what he did to her as she stands before him.

"Would you like to hear about our wedding night?" Sansa asks. "He never hurt my face — he needed my face, the face of Ned Stark’s daughter. But the rest of me, he did what he liked with the rest of me, as long as I could still give him an heir."

The scene was brutal, but necessary for fans who had hated that Sansa was given to Ramsay in the show, something that did not happen in the books.

One of the biggest shocks from season five of "Game of Thrones" was Sansa’s storyline. Sansa had suffered so much loss on the show already — from her father Ned Stark being executed by Joffrey, her brutal mistreatment at the hands of the Lannisters, and the loss of nearly her entire family — that most fans were hoping she’d be safe with Petyr Baelish in the Vale.

But that all changed when Littlefinger sent her off to marry Ramsay. " You’ve been a bystander to tragedy since the day they executed your father," he tells Sansa in season five. "There’s no justice in the world, not unless we make it. You loved your family, avenge them."

Sansa headed off to Winterfell with this promise of vengeance in her heart. Fans were terrified for her though, mainly because in the book, a young girl named Jeyne Poole is married to Ramsay, who believes she’s Arya Stark. She suffers severely as his wife and is brutally tortured and raped.

While at first, fans held out hope that this wouldn’t happen to Sansa, it didn’t take long before Sansa was raped by her new husband and tortured, just like Jeyne Poole in the books.

It was a huge blow. Entire Reddit discussions were dedicated  to analyzing Littlefinger's motives: did he care about Sansa at all or was she was a mere pawn in his game? Some speculated that he simply didn’t know how monstrous Ramsay was, though it’s worth noting here that Littlefinger’s entire game is to know everyone and their weaknesses. It seems doubtful he had no idea what Ramsay was capable of doing.

But why would Littlefinger give away Sansa, a young girl who he seemed to have a creepy romantic interest in and whose mother he loved, to a sadist like Ramsay? Despite his attachment to her, Petyr Baelish gave away Sansa to a psychopath who had tortured Theon Greyjoy and had a penchant for skinning men, women, and children.

Nothing made sense.

And now in season six, fans finally got to hear Sansa say exactly what they were wondering last season. It was almost as though she was talking directly to David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the "Game of Thrones" showrunners, and their decision to put her in harm’s way.

"You said you would protect me," Sansa says to Littlefinger. "I don’t believe you anymore, I don’t need you anymore. You can’t protect me."

While season five was all about breaking down Sansa’s character, season six is about building her back up so she can reclaim the North along with Jon Snow.

"I mean this season is a really, really big one for Sansa, it’s probably her best season yet," Sophie Turner, the actress who plays Sansa, told Entertainment Weekly . "It’s her really coming into her own. She, this season, really commands the respect that she deserves and she grabs hold of it and she runs with it and it’s really good."

Here’s hoping Littlefinger isn’t the only man in her life Sansa will be able to confront this season.

Appearance and Character

Petyr had been slight and short for his age as a boy, and nearing his thirties, he is still a short man of slender build. Petyr has sharp features, a small pointed beard on his chin, and dark hair with threads of grey running through it. [4] [6] He has laughing gray-green eyes [4] [8] like a cat, [9] but Sansa Stark notes that when Petyr laughs, his eyes do not. [6] His breath is always fresh, [7] smelling like mint, [6] which he had enjoyed chewing as a boy. [10]

Petyr has always been cunning and clever. As a child, he was bold, always getting into trouble, [10] but was also capable of looking contrite after his mischiefs. [4] While Petyr was born to the small and insignificant House Baelish , he is a subtle and ambitious man [11] [9] whose intelligence helped him advance in terms of power and status. [12] He possesses considerable skill in commerce and coin , as well as manipulation, and has a gift for political improvisation. He is often underestimated by many high lords due to his low birth. [9] According to George R. R. Martin , "Everybody trusts him because he seems powerless, and he's very friendly, and he's very helpful." [13] Despite this, Tyrion Lannister considers Petyr to be a dangerous man. [8]

Petyr owns a slashed velvet doublet in cream-and-silver, [14] a plum-colored doublet with a mockingbird embroidered on the breast in black thread, [15] a blue velvet tunic with puffed sleeves, [16] and a black velvet doublet with grey sleeves. [17] He is partial to shades of rose and plum. [9] [18] His cloaks, which are clasped with a silver mockingbird, [4] include grey silk trimmed with black fox , [14] stripes of black and white, [15] and a pattern of mockingbirds. [18] Petyr also owns a yellow satin cape [9] and a silver cape [19] patterned with mockingbirds. [16] [20] He also owns a pair of red-dyed leather boots ornamented with black scrollwork. [9] Petyr rides a mare [21] and once owned a Valyrian steel dagger . [12]

Petyr's chambers in the Red Keep are located across the Great Yard from the Tower of the Hand . [22] He enjoys pomegranates [7] and drinks wine . [23] [24]

Petyr's great-grandfather was a Braavosi sellsword in the service of Lord Corbray ; when his son became a hedge knight , he took the stone head of the Titan of Braavos as his sigil. Petyr's father , in turn, was the smallest of small lords of a few rocky acres on the smallest of the Fingers , [9] Petyr's mother was named Alayne . [7] Petyr's father once took him to a hermit's cave see a man said to have the gift of prophecy. Lord Baelish gave the hermit a skin of wine after he groped the boy a bit and said he would be a great man. [7]

Petyr's father befriended Hoster Tully during his service in the War of the Ninepenny Kings , and this friendship led to Petyr being sent to be fostered as a ward at Riverrun . [12] [25]

Petyr was raised alongside Lord Hoster Tully 's children, Catelyn , Lysa , and Edmure . Because of Petyr's family holdings and his short stature, Edmure gave him the nickname "Littlefinger," by which he is still called. [4] Petyr grew close to the Tully children, [9] and he played with Edmure [26] and his sisters. Catelyn recalls how she and Lysa once made mud pies, which Petyr ate, resulting in him being sick for a week. [27] When he had a problem, Petyr went to Lord Hoster's brother, Ser Brynden Tully , just as Lord Hoster's children were wont to do. [28] Petyr and Edmure once built a castle out of blocks in Hoster's solar. [26]

When Catelyn was twelve, Petyr accompanied the Tullys on a journey to Seagard . They camped at Oldstones , where Catelyn pretended to be Jenny of Oldstones and Petyr her Prince of Dragonflies . [29] Catelyn and Lysa became separated from the rest of their party while riding back from Seagard, but Petyr rode back and found the girls in the fog. [30]

As the children grew older, Petyr fell in love with Catelyn, [6] who was several years his elder. Catelyn did not reciprocate Petyr's feelings, loving him as a brother instead. [4] [30] Catelyn's younger sister, Lysa, on the other hand, fell in love with Petyr. [31] Petyr would play at kissing with both Catelyn and Lysa in the godswood of Riverrun , attempting to stick his tongue into their mouths. Catelyn stopped Petyr, but Lysa both allowed and enjoyed it. [10]

When Catelyn's betrothal to Brandon Stark , the heir to Winterfell , was announced, [12] Lords Bracken and Blackwood were at Riverrun to settle a feud with Lord Tully's help. Catelyn and Petyr danced six dances that night, but when he tried to kiss her, she pushed him away and laughed at him. Wounded by the rejection, Petyr got drunk, passed out at the table, and was brought to his bed by Brynden Tully. Lysa snuck in after him, and gave Petyr her maidenhead that night. Still drunk, Petyr believed he was having sex with Catelyn, and he called Lysa "Cat" and told her he loved her before falling asleep. [12] [31]

In 282 AC , when the date of Catelyn's wedding was announced, [12] Petyr, scarcely fifteen years old, challenged the twenty-year-old Brandon Stark to a duel for her hand. [4] Petyr arrived with only a helm, breastplate and mail, leading to Brandon taking off most of his own armor. Petyr asked Catelyn for her favor to wear, but she refused, giving it to Brandon instead. [31] [32] Catelyn begged Brandon not to kill Petyr, to which he agreed. While Brandon offered Petyr multiple chances to yield, Petyr refused to give up. In the end, Petyr was staggering and bleeding from a dozen wounds, when Brandon ended the battle with a backhand cut so brutal Catelyn was convinced it was mortal. [32]

Petyr was given a fortnight to recover at Riverrun, during which time Lysa helped care for him. Catelyn did not go to see him, and Petyr refused to see Edmure, who had served as Brandon's squire during the duel. [32] [33] During this fortnight, Petyr slept with Lysa again. [12] He would later claim to have taken the maidenhood of both Tully sisters, due to his belief that his first encounter with Lysa had actually been with Catelyn. [34] [9] [30]

When the fortnight had passed and Petyr was strong enough, Lord Hoster sent Petyr away from Riverrun. Catelyn did not say goodbye to him. [32] However, Lysa had become pregnant with Petyr's child as a result of their second sexual encounter. After Petyr had been sent away, Lysa revealed her pregnancy to her father, hoping he would relent and allow Lysa and Petyr to marry. Instead, Hoster, who had believed Petyr to be too lowborn, [7] forced Lysa to drink moon tea to abort the pregnancy. [35]

Back at the Fingers , Petyr sent Catelyn a single letter after the death of her betrothed, Brandon. However, she burned the letter without reading it. [4] Catelyn and Lysa married Lords Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn , respectively, at Riverrun during Robert's Rebellion , [36] and Catelyn went north to Winterfell after the conclusion of the war. [37] Petyr used to dream about Winterfell, always imagining it as a dark and cold place. [31]

Gulltown and King's Landing

Lysa Arryn convinced Jon Arryn , her new husband and Lord of the Eyrie , to give Petyr a minor sinecure in customs at Gulltown around 289 AC . [9] Littlefinger quickly brought in three times as much as other royal collectors, [9] and, according to Lysa, he increased incomes tenfold. [7] Lord Arryn, also the Hand of the King for Robert I Baratheon , rewarded Petyr with other appointments, [7] and Lysa convinced her husband to bring Petyr to court. [31] Within three years of coming to King's Landing , Littlefinger had become master of coin and a member of the small council . [9]

Petyr increased his influence by moving his own people in place, such as the four Keepers of the Keys , the King's Counter , and the King's Scales , as well as harbor masters, toll collectors, and wine factors. [9] Meanwhile, he also developed a complex web of loans, transactions, and investments, as to supply the king and the Hand with enough gold , [9] and he bought a number of establishments (including several brothels ). [38] [8] The crown's revenues have increased tenfold compared to Littlefinger's predecessor as master of coin, although the royal debts of King Robert are vast as well. [9] The last Chief Gaoler , a former cloth merchant, purchased his position from Petyr. [39]

Petyr bet on Ser Jaime Lannister during the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day , but he lost his blade of Valyrian steel to King Robert when Jaime was unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell . [30] [12] Littlefinger has also boasted at court of having taken Catelyn Stark 's virginity. [34] Oswell Kettleblack has been in Petyr's service for a long time. [17]

Living in the capital with the elderly Lord Arryn for years with Petyr nearby has been difficult for Lysa. [7] [12] She and Petyr started planning a life together, [31] and according to a semi-canon source they have begun a secret affair. [12] [40] When Lysa learned that her husband planned to send their son, Robert Arryn , away to be fostered at Dragonstone by Lord Stannis Baratheon , Petyr provided her with the poison she used to kill Lord Jon. He also convinced Lysa to send a message to her sister Catelyn at Winterfell, in which she falsely accused Queen Cersei and House Lannister of the murder of her husband. [37] [31]

Lady Catelyn Stark travels to King's Landing to inform her husband, Lord Eddard Stark , about the attempt on the life of their son Bran . Petyr, having learned of her arrival despite her efforts to remain unnoticed, intercepts Catelyn and has her brought to the Red Keep . Catelyn is wary of Petyr and Lord Varys when she shows them the Valyrian steel dagger used in the attempt by a catspaw . Petyr says that he recognizes the dagger, claiming that it was once his but that he lost it to Tyrion Lannister in a wager during the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day . [4] In truth, however, Littlefinger's blade had been lost to King Robert I Baratheon . [30] [12] Petyr promises Catelyn he will help her husband investigate the death of Lord Jon Arryn , Lord Stark's predecessor as Hand of the King . [38]

After a meeting of the small council , Petyr brings Eddard to meet with his wife, whom Littlefinger has hidden at one of his brothels , and Petyr convinces the new Hand, against his inclination, to make no move against the Lannisters until they have proof. Catelyn feels she has reconnected with her childhood friend. [38] Eddard remains wary of Petyr after Catelyn departs the capital, but he becomes more trusting after Littlefinger advises him to investigate Lord Arryn's household. Petyr, however, warns Ned not to trust anyone, including himself. [41]

During the Hand's tourney , Petyr loses a hundred golden dragons to Lord Renly Baratheon when Sandor Clegane unhorses Ser Jaime Lannister . [22] Petyr meets Sansa Stark , the eldest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn, during the festivities, and he brushes the girl's cheek while touching her hair. [6]

Acting on Petyr's lie about the dagger, Catelyn arrests Tyrion at the inn at the crossroads [27] and takes him to the Eyrie . [28] Tyrion insists the dagger used by the assassin was not his, and he tells Catelyn that Petyr has often claimed at court to have taken her virginity. [34]

When King Robert learns that the exiled Princess Daenerys Targaryen is pregnant, Petyr agrees with Robert in advocating her assassination. Ned resigns as Hand in protest of Robert's command, but before he can arrange to travel back to Winterfell, Petyr approaches him with the promise of assistance in his investigation into Jon Arryn's death. [14] Littlefinger leads Ned to a brothel where a young whore is raising one of Robert's bastard children . [42]

Petyr attends court while Eddard sits the Iron Throne in the Robert's absence, as the king has gone hunting in the kingswood . [43] Petyr's flight from Jaime's men bothers Lord Stark. [15]

Robert is mortally wounded hunting a boar, and the dying king names Eddard as Lord Regent and Protector of the Realm . Petyr advises Ned that despite their knowledge that Queen Cersei Lannister 's children are illegitimate and that Robert's brother, Lord Stannis Baratheon , is the legal heir, the wisest course of action is to ensure Prince Joffrey Baratheon 's succession, a maneuver calculated to avoid all-out war and maximize their own power. Eddard refuses the suggestion and instead enlists Petyr's help in securing the allegiance of the gold cloaks for when he moves against Cersei. [16] Littlefinger actually bribes the gold cloaks to support the queen in the throne room , however. As he recovers his dagger during the arrest of Eddard Stark , Petyr reminds Ned he had told him not to trust him. [20]

Petyr wears black as the small council mourns Robert. [44] As the majority of Eddard's followers in King's Landing have been killed following his arrest, [45] Petyr takes Vayon Poole 's daughter Jeyne , Sansa's friend, into his custody. [46] Littlefinger mocks Ser Barristan Selmy when the famed knight is publicly dismissed from the Kingsguard . [47]

Varys visits Eddard in the black cells and convinces him to confess treason and take the black . [48] Petyr attends Ned's confession at the Great Sept of Baelor , where King Joffrey unexpectedly orders Lord Stark's execution. [19]

A Clash of Kings

To pay for Queen Regent Cersei Lannister 's plans for the defense of King's Landing , Petyr imposes a tax on all who enter the capital. [2]

Upon arriving at King's Landing to serve as Hand of the King while Lord Tywin Lannister is in the field, Tyrion Lannister realizes Petyr is more dangerous than he had previously known. [8] Varys hints to Tyrion that Littlefinger might have been the one who whispered in Stannis Baratheon 's ear about his brother   Robert's bastards not resembling his royal children with Cersei. [8]

Tyrion investigates Petyr's past, learning how Petyr came to be on the small council, naming Petyr a "master juggler" when referring to his skill at finances, and noting on the fact that Petyr, due to his low birth and the way he presents himself, is not seen as a threat by anyone. [9] Realizing Petyr has many of his own men placed into multiple positions, Tyrion decides not to make a move against Petyr concerning the lie he told about Tyrion's involvement in the attack on Bran Stark 's life, until he can find a way to replace those men with his own. [9]

During a meeting of the small council, following the proclamation of King Stannis Baratheon that Cersei's children were born out of incest , Petyr proposes they fight Stannis's claims by spreading rumors of their own. Littlefinger suggests they spread the claim that Stannis's daughter, Shireen Baratheon , was fathered by Patchface , Stannis's fool at Dragonstone . [49]

Littlefinger boasts to Tyrion of having taken the virginities of both Catelyn and Lysa Tully . The Hand suggests sending Petyr to Lysa in the Vale to gain House Arryn for King Joffrey I Baratheon , and in return Littlefinger might be rewarded with Harrenhal and named liege lord of the Trident . [9]

After the assassination of King Renly Baratheon , Petyr and Tyrion plot to form an alliance with House Tyrell to win over any lords of the Reach or the stormlands that did not immediately declare for Stannis. Petyr volunteers to travel to Bitterbridge to meet the angry Ser Loras Tyrell , so Tyrion provides him with an escort of one hundred gold cloaks. [50] At Highgarden Petyr negotiates successfully with Lord Mace Tyrell and his mother, Olenna Tyrell , [7] forging a Lannister-Tyrell alliance through the engagement of King Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell , Mace's daughter. [51] [52]

Petyr returns to King's Landing with Tyrell forces alongside those of Tywin Lannister. The allied Lannister and Tyrell armies are able to take Stannis's forces in the rear in the last hours of the Battle of the Blackwater , with Petyr providing the idea to dress Ser Garlan Tyrell in King Renly's armor during the battle so as to frighten Stannis's men-at-arms. [53] After the battle, Petyr is rewarded with the title Lord Paramount of the Trident and is named Lord of Harrenhal , despite the fact that the castle is still held by Lord Roose Bolton for Robb Stark , King in the North . The titles give Petyr nominal control over the war-torn riverlands and makes him a high lord. [18]

A Storm of Swords

Sansa Stark discretely meets with Ser Dontos Hollard , who vaguely tells the girl of a plan to return her home and gives her a silver hair net. [18] Unbeknownst to Sansa, however, the fool is secretly in Littlefinger's employ. [54] Petyr also acquires key informants in the crown's inner circle in Ser Osney , Ser Osfryd , and Ser Osmund Kettleblack , [51] who had been hired to guard Queen Regent Cersei Lannister after Tyrion Lannister sent Vylarr and his red cloaks away. [55] Tyrion believes that the Kettleblack brothers are in his pay, [51] when in truth their allegiance is to Petyr. [7]

During a session of the small council , Petyr informs Lord Tywin Lannister of the Tyrell plot to spirit Sansa Stark to Highgarden and marry her to Willas Tyrell , giving Tywin the necessary time to wed her in haste to his son Tyrion instead. [11]

Petyr's newfound status as a high lord gives him the necessary standing to be considered by Tywin for a marriage to the widowed Lysa Arryn with the intent of delivering the Vale of Arryn , which has remained neutral, to the crown without violence. Petyr agrees with the plan and is sent to the Eyrie to woo Lysa, believing that to be an easy task given their history. Tyrion is appointed as master of coin upon Petyr's departure. He warns Tywin, Cersei, and Ser Kevan Lannister that Petyr's scheming and wealth makes him dangerous even to their family, despite the Lannisters' gold . [11]

Though Petyr has left King's Landing, he does not go immediately to the Vale, and instead secretly remains near the city. [12] Joffrey I Baratheon marries Margaery Tyrell , the boy king chokes to death at their wedding feast. [56] In the ensuing chaos, Sansa Stark is spirited out of the city by a drunken Dontos Hollard, and Oswell Kettleblack rows them to a ship on Blackwater Bay where Petyr awaits. When Ser Lothor Brune 's crossbowmen kill Dontos, Petyr explains to Sansa that she will be wanted in connection with Joffrey's death and that Dontos's death is the only sure way to know he will remain silent. Petyr also brags of his involvement in arranging a set of jousting dwarfs as entertainment, which he explains were calculated to bring Tyrion Lannister into conflict with Joffrey just prior to the king's death. Confident that Tyrion will be executed, he notes to Sansa that widowhood will become her. [54]

Petyr and Sansa travel on the Merling King to the Vale. Instead of continuing on to White Harbor so that Sansa can be returned to the north , they disembark near Petyr's " Drearfort ", his ancestral home on the Fingers . Petyr gives Sansa the assumed identity of "Alayne Stone", his bastard daughter named after his own mother , and he decides that "Alayne's" mother was a gentlewoman of Braavos who died in childbirth. [7] Petyr explains his role in Joffrey's murder, having plotted it with Olenna Tyrell . He reveals the involvement of the hair net laced with black amethysts that Dontos had insisted Sansa wear to the feast. The amethysts were in reality the strangler , the poison used to kill Joffrey; Sansa had unwittingly smuggled them into the feast. [7]

Lysa arrives at Petyr's tower and insists upon marrying him immediately instead of having a grander wedding at the Eyrie. He reluctantly agrees, and Lysa's ladies convince Sansa to help undress Petyr during the bedding custom . As they have sex, Lysa yells out that she wants Petyr to give her a child. [7] Littlefinger tasks Ser Lothar Brune with protecting Sansa. [7] Petyr informs Lysa that "Alayne" is actually her niece Sansa, so Lysa has the girl's hair darkened to help hide her identity. Lysa decides to name Petyr as Lord Protector of the Vale and to betroth Sansa to her own son, Lord Robert Arryn . [7]

They travel to the Eyrie after the wedding, but Petyr spends much of his time at the Gates of the Moon trying to asserting his authority. Lysa convinces him to shave off his beard. Many lords of the Vale resent Petyr for his marriage and title. [31]

While helping Sansa build a snow castle of her family's ancestral home, Winterfell , Petyr kisses the girl in the godswood of the Eyrie . When Sansa objects, Petyr notes that Sansa is growing into a beautiful young woman and that she looks much like her mother Catelyn did at that age. Young Lord Robert arrives and destroys the snow castle. [31]

Lysa witnessed the kiss, and in a fit of jealous rage attempts to kill Sansa in the High Hall later that day, nearly shoving her out the Moon Door . Petyr arrives in time to intervene, at which point Lysa breaks down crying. She accuses Petyr of not loving her despite all she had done for him. She reveals in Sansa's hearing that it had been Petyr who had convinced her to poison her previous husband, Lord Jon Arryn , to prevent him from sending Robert away to be fostered. Lysa also admits that it had been Petyr who had convinced her to write a letter to her sister Catelyn, stating that Jon had been poisoned and that the Lannisters were responsible. Petyr temporarily soothes Lysa, assuring her that he has only ever loved one woman. He then adds "only Cat" and shoves Lysa out the Moon Door to her death. The killing is blamed on the singer Marillion . [31]

A Feast for Crows

Following Lysa's death, Petyr remains Lord Protector of the Vale, with Lord Robert Arryn as his ward. When Lord Nestor Royce , High Steward of the Vale and Keeper of the Gates of the Moon , arrives at the Eyrie , Sansa, disguised as "Alayne", verifies Petyr's claim that Marillion murdered Lady Lysa Arryn . Petyr gains Nestor as an ally by granting him the Gates of the Moon , stating it had been the desire of the late Lysa. [17]

Six of the most powerful lords of the Vale gather at Runestone , planning on removing Petyr as Lord Protector. In King's Landing , Queen Regent Cersei Lannister decides that these Lords Declarant can participate in deciding who rules over the Vale of Arryn during Robert's minority, but Petyr is not to be harmed. [57] Littlefinger asks Cersei to send him tapestries owned by her late husband, King Robert I Baratheon . [57] [23]

The levies of the Lords Declarant surround the Gates of the Moon, [23] and the rebel lords ascend the Giant's Lance for a parley. Petyr refuses their demand to leave the Vale and assume rule over Harrenhal in the war-torn riverlands , and Nestor Royce defends Petyr during the meeting. Ser Lyn Corbray behaves belligerently, going so far as to draw his Valyrian steel sword Lady Forlorn , breaching guest right . Now holding leverage over the Lords Declarant, Petyr successfully demands he be given a year to set the Vale to rights. After the Lords Declarant depart, Petyr notes to Sansa how fortuitous Lyn's action was, and Sansa correctly guesses that Lyn must be on his payroll. Petyr plans to use his time as Lord Robert's regent to eliminate, win over, or marginalize the lords who are currently against him. He will allow Lyn to use his supposed disgust for him to facilitate his joining, and covertly informing on, any conspiracy against the Lord Protector. [23]

Petyr arranges a marriage between Lyn's elder brother, Lord Lyonel Corbray , and a merchant's daughter , and he then attends their wedding in Gulltown . With winter approaching, the Arryn court departs the Eyrie for the Gates of the Moon. Petyr returns from Gulltown with three hedge knights he has hired, Ser Byron the Beautiful , Ser Morgarth the Merry , and Ser Shadrich of the Shady Glen . [24] Unbeknownst to the Arryn court, Shadrich has been searching for Sansa because of the gold offered as a reward for finding her by Varys . [58]

When they are alone, Petyr tells Sansa that Cersei's leadership in King's Landing is bringing the Seven Kingdoms to ruin faster than he had anticipated. He informs Sansa that he means to marry her to Ser Harrold Hardyng , the heir of the young and sickly Lord Robert. Once the deaths of Robert and Tyrion Lannister are confirmed, Sansa's true identity can be revealed at her wedding with Lord Harrold and the knights of the Vale will help her regain Winterfell in the north . Littlefinger then asks Sansa for another kiss. [24]

During the siege of Riverrun , Ser Jaime Lannister reminds Emmon Frey that although he was named Lord of Riverrun , Littlefinger is his liege as the Lord Paramount of the Trident . [59] After resolving the siege, Jaime considers Petyr as a possible Hand of the King for Tommen I Baratheon . [26]

A Dance with Dragons

Following the Red Wedding , the Lannisters produce a girl whom they claim to be the missing Arya Stark . They send the girl to marry Roose Bolton 's son, Ramsay , helping to cement the alliance between House Bolton and the crown. [60] [61] Theon Greyjoy later learns that the girl sent by the Lannisters to marry Ramsay Bolton is not Arya, but a disguised Jeyne Poole , [62] who had been whipped and trained while being kept in one of Petyr's brothels. [63] [64]

While mulling over Sansa Stark , Cersei Lannister recalls that before the Lannisters married her to Tyrion Lannister , Petyr had offered to marry Sansa himself, but his offer was rejected on account of his low birth. [65]

With the crown having huge financial problems due to the follies of Cersei, Ser Kevan Lannister wishes that Petyr was back in King's Landing as master of coin. [66]

The Winds of Winter

This information has thus far been released in a sample chapter for , and might therefore not be in finalized form. Keep in mind that the content as described below is still subject to change.

After Sansa makes the suggestions, Petyr arranges for a tourney to be held at the Gates of the Moon to choose the Brotherhood of Winged Knights . Littlefinger gives King Robert I Baratheon 's tapestries to Lord Nestor Royce , and he advises Lords Benedar Belmore and Gerold Grafton to hoard their harvests until the price of grain goes up. [67]

Quotes by Petyr

Catelyn : I will not forget the help you gave me, Petyr. When your men came for me, I did not know whether they were taking me to a friend or an enemy. I have found you more than a friend. I have found a brother I'd thought lost. Petyr : I am desperately sentimental, sweet lady. Best not tell anyone. I have spent years convincing the court that I am wicked and cruel, and I should hate to see all that hard work go for naught. [38] — Catelyn Stark and Petyr
Eddard : I ... am grateful for your help. Perhaps I was wrong to distrust you. Petyr : You are slow to learn, Lord Eddard. Distrusting me was the wisest thing you've done since you climbed down off your horse. [41] — Eddard Stark and Petyr
Your mother was my queen of beauty once. You have her hair. [6] —Petyr to Sansa Stark
Petyr : Do you perchance recall what I said to you that day your father sat the Iron Throne ? Sansa : You told me that life was not a song. That I would learn that one day, to my sorrow. Is it all lies, forever and ever, everyone and everything? Petyr : Almost everyone. Save you and I, of course. [54] —Petyr and Sansa Stark
Petyr : Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you. Remember that, Sansa, when you come to play the game. Sansa : What... what game? Petyr : The only game. The game of thrones. [54] —Petyr and Sansa Stark
Everyone wants something, Alayne. And when you know what a man wants you know who he is, and how to move him. [7] —Petyr to Sansa Stark
You could turn King's Landing upside down and not find a single man with a mockingbird sewn over his heart, but that does not mean I am friendless. [7] —Petyr to Sansa Stark
Clean hands, Sansa. Whatever you do, make certain your hands are clean. [7] —Petyr to Sansa Stark
Petyr : My sweet silly jealous wife. I've only loved one woman, I promise you. Lysa : Only one? Oh, Petyr, do you swear it? Only one? Petyr : Only Cat . [31] — Lysa Arryn and Petyr
Men of honor will do things for their children that they would never consider doing for themselves. [17] —Petyr to Sansa Stark
In the game of thrones, even the humblest pieces can have wills of their own. Sometimes they refuse to make the moves you've planned for them. Mark that well, Alayne. It's a lesson that Cersei Lannister still has yet to learn. [23] —Petyr to Sansa Stark

Quotes about Petyr

Rodrik : Littlefinger sits on the small council now. Catelyn : I knew he would rise high. He was always clever, even as a boy, but it is one thing to be clever and another to be wise. [4] — Rodrik Cassel and Catelyn Stark
He had grey-green eyes that did not smile when his mouth did. [6] — Sansa Stark 's thoughts
Catelyn : Why would Petyr lie to me? Tyrion : Why does a bear shit in the woods? Because it is his nature. Lying comes as easily as breathing to a man like Littlefinger. You ought to know that, you of all people. Catelyn : And what does that mean, Lannister? Tyrion : Why, every man at court has heard him tell how he took your maidenhead , my lady. Catelyn : That is a lie! [34] — Catelyn Stark and Tyrion Lannister
Littlefinger... the gods only know what game Littlefinger is playing. [68] — Varys to Illyrio Mopatis
Something about the way the small man looked at her made Sansa feel as though she had no clothes on. [46] — Sansa Stark 's thoughts
Littlefinger is the second most devious man in the Seven Kingdoms . [48] — Varys to Eddard Stark
Littlefinger was no threat to anyone. A clever, smiling, genial man, everyone's friend, always able to find whatever gold the king or his Hand required, and yet of such undistinguished birth, one step up from a hedge knight , he was not a man to fear. He had no banners to call, no army of retainers, no great stronghold, no holdings to speak of, no prospects of a great marriage. [9] — Tyrion Lannister 's thoughts
Littlefinger's gold is made from thin air, with a snap from his fingers. [11] — Tyrion Lannister to Kevan Lannister
I shall make him Lord Protector of the Vale . He many not look as tall or as strong as some, but he is worth more than all of them. Trust in him and do as he says. [7] — Lysa Arryn to Sansa Stark
He was Petyr, her protector, warm and funny and gentle ... but he was also Littlefinger, the lord she'd known at King's Landing , smiling slyly and stroking his beard as he whispered in Queen Cersei's ear. And Littlefinger was no friend of hers. [17] — Sansa Stark 's thoughts
Littlefinger was as amiable as he was clever, but too lowborn to threaten any of the great lords, with no swords of his own. The perfect Hand . [26] — Jaime Lannister 's thoughts

"Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder."

Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try it again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb. They refuse. They cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

This line is spoken by Petyr Baelish (played by Aidan Gillen) in an episode of Game of Thrones , written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (2011- ).

Petyr Baelish (more commonly known as Littlefinger) is sketchy, slimy, skeezy, and a whole host of other negative words beginning with "s." In a world where your last name is all the matters, Littlefinger is a self-made man from a poor family. But through his conniving and planning, he is one of the most powerful men in Game of Thrones .

And his speech about chaos makes his agenda crystal clear. Littlefinger wants to sit on the Iron Throne and rule the Seven Kingdoms, at any cost. He doesn't care who he has to betray, place in a loveless marriage, or kill. All Littlefinger cares about is planting himself on the chair with the pointy swords.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this speech when your worst enemy is about to make your life a living hell and is taunting you. Better change your locks and social media passwords because things could get a little Westerosi up in here.

This article compared Petyr Baelish to Alexander Hamilton because Littlefinger definitely isn't throwing away his shot at the Iron Throne.

Book Accurate Daenerys Wears A Beautiful Three Dragon Crown In Stunning Game Of Thrones Portrait Art

Jeff goldblum's netflix comedy series continues rare rotten tomatoes streak for the actor, the acolyte's cancelation risks wasting star wars' best sith lord in 19 years.

Anyone who has seen the HBO series Game of Thrones knows that one of the most enjoyable aspects of the series is the character development. There are very few characters that don’t show at least a little bit of growth from the beginning to the end (those that survived that long, anyway). One of the most notable characters in this regard is Sansa Stark, who begins her journey as innocent and naive and ends up becoming the Queen of the North (and one of the more sensible members of the Stark family ).

As a result, she has quite a few good speeches to her name, but also some that are less than spectacular.

Best: Her Speech Saving Petyr

Littlefinger Sansa Stark Winterfell

During her time in King’s Landing, Sansa comes under the influence of Petyr Baelish, the ambitious and scheming Master of Coin. He eventually whisks her away to the court of her Aunt Lysa, after which he ends up murdering Lysa.

When he stands accused of the crime, Sansa gives a masterful performance, giving a truly splendid speech that manages to convince everyone of his innocence. It’s a reminder that Sansa has always been far more subtle than her enemies give her credit for.

Worst: Her Children Speech About Joffrey

Game of Thrones Sansa Joffrey

Very early on in the series, Sansa made it very clear that she was enraptured with the idea of bearing Joffrey's sons.

By this point, it’s clear to anyone with eyes that Joffrey is kind of a little monster, so it makes this speech from Sansa seem even more bizarre. Obviously, she can be given some slack for being such a young person, but even so, one would have thought that she’d have had a little more common sense.

Best: Her Declaration Of The North As Independent

Game of Thrones Finale Sansa

By the time that the series ends, it’s pretty clear to most people that the Seven Kingdoms can never be the same again. Too much has happened, too many betrayals have shattered alliances, and the wounds are simply too deep. Sansa recognizes more than most, which is why she gives Bran a very brief speech in which she informs him that the North will now be an independent kingdom .

It’s brazen, to be sure, but one can’t help but admire her willingness to assert such political independence.

Worst: Her I Want Joffrey Speech

Sophie Turner as Sansa in Game of Thrones

If anything matches her desire to have Joffrey’s children in terms of terrible speeches, it’s a similar one where she has a brief speech where she says that she simply wants Joffrey.

It’s a rather strange sentiment, especially since there’s nothing particularly appealing about the young prince, either on a behavioral or appearance level. Poor Sansa, she had absolutely no idea what was waiting for her in the snake pit that was King’s Landing (to say nothing of Cersei).

Best: Her Taunting Of Littlefinger

write the famous lines in direct speech lord baelish

Petyr may have thought that he had managed to bring Sansa totally under his control, but it didn't take long for her to show him him how very wrong he was in thinking that way.

In one of the series’ most important moments, she finally reveals just how much she learned from him , all in a prelude to his execution at Arya’s hands. It’s a potent speech, and it’s a reminder that Sansa has been transformed by her traumatic experiences into a woman that truly deserves to be the Queen of the North .

Worst: The Pack Survives Metaphor

Jon Sansa Arya Bran in godswood on Game of Thrones season 8

For some reason, the writers of this series seem to delight in all sorts of metaphors. Some of them really land (Littlefinger’s chaos is a ladder, for example), while others feel quite trite and simplistic.

Unfortunately, Sansa’s speech where she likens the Starks to wolves is one of the latter. It’s one of those cases where the simile is just a bit too nice and neat, and it comes across as being almost cliche. The Starks definitely deserve better.

Best: When She Admits Her Father’s And Brother’s Failings

Sansa Stark, Game of Thrones

The Starks are definitely some of the most noble and honorable members of the nobility, and this has led to some of their most disastrous mistakes.

In a very powerful speech, Sansa acknowledges that both her father Ned and her brother Robb made some mistakes that ultimately cost them their lives and did significant damage to the kingdom. What’s more, it reveals that she is not going to let herself make the same mistakes as she embarks on her own journey to power.

Worst: Her Attempt To Warn Jon About Ramsay

Jon Snow Sansa Stark

It’s easy to see why Sansa starts to get irritated with Jon almost as soon as they come back together. After all, he can be a bit stubborn, and he doesn’t seem to want to realize just how cunning and ruthless Ramsay Snow is.

Unfortunately, Sansa’s efforts to persuade him of the truth of matter aren’t particularly compelling, and while it is frustrating that Jon refuses to heed her warnings (particularly since it almost costs him his life), the way that the speech is written makes one wonder why Sansa even bothered.

Best: Her Last Speech To Ramsay

Sansa Stark killing Ramsay Bolton

Ramsay’s tormenting of Sansa are some of the hardest scenes to watch in the final seasons. It’s infuriating to watch this beloved character be subjected to the horrible actions of this revolting character. Sansa, however, ends up having the last laugh , and her final words to Ramsay, just before he’s devoured by his own hounds, definitely goes down in show history as one of the finest. It’s a potent reminder that Sansa is definitely not a person to be messed with.

The Lannisters aren’t the only ones that pay their debts.

Worst: Her Short Speech That No One Can Protect Her

Sansa Stark in the Eyrie standing in the snow in Game of Thrones

There’s nothing really wrong with the short speech in which Sansa says that no one can protect her, not even Jon Snow. After all, it’s pretty true.

However, at the same time it’s not the most graceful of speeches, and it’s hard not to think that there was almost certainly a better way that the writers could have found a better for her to express this (particularly since they’d already given her such excellent speeches in the past).

You Win or You Die

You win or you die lyrics.

Trumpets sounds from the Lannister camp. Going inside a tent, we see Tywin Lannister sharpening his knifes, preparing to skin a deer, while Jaime Lannister starts reading the received letter from Ned Stark. Jaime Lannister: "Summoned to court to answer for the crimes of your bannerman Gregor Clegane, the Mountain" Uh, "arrive within the fortnight or be branded an enemy of the Crown." Poor Ned Stark. Brave man, terrible judgment. Tywin Lannister: Attacking him was stupid. Tywin Lannister: Lannisters don't act like fools. Are you gonna say something clever? Go on, say something clever. Jaime Lannister: Catelyn Stark took my brother. Tywin Lannister: Why is he still alive? Jaime Lannister: Tyrion? Tywin Lannister: Ned Stark. Jaime Lannister: One of our men interfered, speared him through the leg before I could finish him. Tywin Lannister: Why is he still alive? Jaime Lannister: It wouldn't have been clean. Tywin Lannister: Clean... Tywin Lannister: You spend too much time worrying about what other people think of you. Jaime Lannister: I could care less what anyone thinks of me. Tywin Lannister: Now that's what you want people to think of you. Jaime Lannister: It's the truth. Tywin Lannister: When you hear them whispering "Kingslayer" behind your back, doesn't it bother you? Jaime Lannister: Of course it bothers me. Tywin Lannister: The lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of the sheep. I suppose I should be grateful that your vanity got in the way of your recklessness. I'm giving you half of our forces. 30,000 men. You will bring them to Catelyn Stark's girlhood home and remind her that Lannisters pay their debts. Jaime Lannister: I didn't realize you placed such a high value on my brother's life. Tywin Lannister: He's a Lannister. He might be the lowest of the Lannisters, but he's one of us. And every day that he remains a prisoner, the less our name commands respect. Jaime Lannister: So the lion does concern himself with the opinions of.. Tywin Lannister: No, it's not an opinion, it's a fact! If another House can seize one of our own and hold him captive with impunity, we are no longer a House to be feared. Your mother's dead. Before long I'll be dead. And you and your brother and your sister and all of her children. All of us dead, all of us rotting in the ground. It's the family name that lives on . It's all that lives on. Not your personal glory, not your honor, but family. Do you understand? Jaime nods gently. Tywin Lannister: Hmm. You're blessed with abilities that few men possess. You are blessed to belong to the most powerful family in the kingdoms. And you are still blessed with youth. And what have you done with these blessings, huh? You've served as a glorified bodyguard for two kings. One a madman, the other a drunk. The future of our family will be determined in these next few months. We could establish a dynasty that will last a thousand years. Or we could collapse into nothing, as the Targaryens did. I need you to become a man you were always meant to be. Not next year. Not tomorrow. Now. Submissive as he looks, Jaime walks out of the tent.

Back at a garden in Kings Landing, we see Queen Cersei approaching the sitting Ned Stark. Cersei Lannister: You're in pain. Ned Stark: I've had worse, my lady. Cersei Lannister: Perhaps it's time to go home. Ned Stark: The South doesn't seem to agree with you. Ned Stark: I know the truth Jon Arryn died for. Cersei Lannister: Do you, Lord Stark? Is that why you called me here, to pose me riddles? Ned Stark: Has he done this before? Cersei Lannister: Jaime would have killed him. Cersei Lannister: My brother is worth a thousand of your friend. Ned Stark: Your brother Or your lover? Cersei Lannister: The Targaryens wed brothers and sisters for 300 years to keep bloodlines pure. Cersei Lannister: Jaime and I are more than brother and sister. We shared a womb. We came into this world together. We belong together. Ned Stark: My son saw you with him. Cersei Lannister : Do you love your children? Ned Stark: With all my heart. Cersei Lannister: No more than I love mine. Ned Stark: And they are all Jaime's. Cersei Lannister: Thank the Gods. In the rare event that Robert leaves his whores for long enough to stumble drunk into my bed, I finish him off in other ways. In the morning, he doesn't remember. Ned Stark: You've always hated him. Cersei Lannister: Hated him? I worshiped him. Every girl in the Seven Kingdoms dreamed of him, but he was mine by oath. And when I finally saw him on our wedding day in the Sept of Baelor, lean and fierce and black-bearded, it was the happiest moment of my life. Then that night he crawled on top of me, stinking of wine and did what he did, what little he could do, and whispered in my ear, "Lyanna". Your sister was a corpse and I was a living girl and he loved her more than me. Ned Stark: When the King returns from his hunt, I'll tell him the truth. You must be gone by then. You and your children. I will not have their blood on my hands. Go as far away as you can, with as many men as you can. Because wherever you go, Robert's wrath will follow you. Cersei Lannister: And what of my wrath, Lord Stark? You should have taken the realm for yourself. Jaime told me about the day King's Landing fell. He was sitting in the Iron Throne and you made him give it up. All you needed to do was climb the steps yourself. Such a sad mistake. Ned Stark: I've made many mistakes in my life, but that wasn't one of them. Cersei Lannister: Oh, but it was. When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground. Cersei walks off.

Littlefinger is looking outside his brothel window. Seeing mothers bathing their crying children. Seemingly in thought, he decides to close it. Meanwhile, Ros and Ameca are playing with each other, while Ros is loudly moaning. Ros: Come here. Oh yes, oh. Oh yes yes yes. Petyr Baelish: No no no no! Is that what they teach you up in the North? And you-- wherever you're from, do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Either of you understand a thing that I'm saying? Ros: Yes, My Lord. Petyr Baelish: Let's start over, shall we? You be the man and you be the woman. Well, go ahead. Slowly. You're not fooling them. They just paid you. They know what you are. They know it's all just an act. Your job is to make them forget what they know. That takes time. You need to Ease into it. Go ahead. Ease into it. He's winning you over in spite of yourself. You're starting to like this. He wants to believe you. He's enjoyed his cock since he was old enough to play with it. Why shouldn't you? He knows he's better than other men. He's always known it deep down inside. Now he has proof. He's so good, he's reaching something deep inside of you that no one even knew was there. Overcoming your very nature. Ros: Why don't you join us, My Lord? Petyr Baelish: I'm saving myself for another. Ros: What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Petyr Baelish: A stupid saying. What we don't know is usually what gets us killed. Ros: She must be very beautiful. Petyr Baelish: No, not really. Impeccable bloodlines though. Ros: I do believe my lord's in love. Petyr Baelish: For many years. Most of my life really. Play with her ass. And she loved me too. I was her little confidant, her plaything. She could tell me anything, anything at all. She told me about all the horses that she liked. The castle she wanted to live in and the man that she wanted to marry. A northerner with a jaw like an anvil. So I challenged him to a duel. I mean, why not? I'd read all the stories. The little hero always beats the big villain in all the stories. In the end, she wouldn't even let him kill me. "He's just a boy", she said. "Please don't hurt him". So he gave me a nice little scar to remember him by, and off they went. Ros: Is she still married to him? Petyr Baelish: Oh no. He got himself killed before the wedding. And she ended up with his brother, an even more impressive specimen. She loves him, I'm afraid. And why wouldn't she? I mean, who could compare to him? He's just so...good. Do you know what I learned, losing that duel? I learned that I'll never win. Not that way. That's their game, their rules. I'm not going to fight them. I'm going to fuck them. That's what I know. That's what I am. And only by admitting what we are can we get what we want. Ros: And what do you want? Petyr Baelish: Oh, everything, my dear. Everything there is. Now wash yourselves. Both of you are working tonight. Hmm. While Ros and Ameca are both walking out, Littlefinger watches them leave.

Back at Winterfell, Osha is walking into a stable, carrying a bale of straw. While bending over and laying down the bale of sraw , Theon Grayjoy arrives. Theon Greyjoy: You're a very lucky girl. Do you know that? Where I come from, we don't show mercy to criminals. Where I come from, if someone like you attacked a little lord, at low tide we'd lay you on your back on the beach, your hands and feet chained to four stakes. The sea would come in closer and closer. You'd see death creeping toward you a few inches at a time. Osha: Where is it you come from? Theon Greyjoy: The Iron Islands. Osha: They far away? Theon Greyjoy: You've never heard of the Iron Islands? Osha: Trust me, you've never heard where I'm from neither. Theon Greyjoy: Trust me, My Lord. You're not living in the wilderness anymore. In civilized lands, you refer to your betters by their proper titles. Osha: And what's that? Theon Greyjoy: Lord. Osha: Why? Theon Greyjoy: Why? What do you mean why? My father is Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands. Osha: What's that got to do with you? If your father's lord, how can you be lord too? Theon Greyjoy: I will be lord after my father. Osha: So you're not lord now? Theon Greyjoy: No, you...You having a go at me? Is that it? Osha: I just don't understand how you Southerners do things. Theon Greyjoy: I'm not a Southerner. Osha: You're from South of the wall. That makes you a Southerner to me. Theon Greyjoy: You're an impudent little wench, aren't you? Osha: Couldn't say, My Lord. Don't know what "impunent" means. Theon Greyjoy: Impudent. It means rude. Disrespectful. Do you want to lose that chain? Maester Luwin: Theon Greyjoy! The lady is our guest. Theon Greyjoy: I thought she was our prisoner. Maester Luwin: Are the two mutually exclusive in your experience? Agitated as he is, Theon runs off. Maester Luwin: Chances are I won't be nearby the next time that happens. Osha: I'm used to worse than him. Osha: I'm used to men who could chew that boy up and pick their teeth with his bones. Maester Luwin: Why did you come here? Osha: Didn't mean to come here. Meant to get much further South than this. As far South as South goes, before the long night comes. Maester Luwin: Why? What are you afraid of? Osha: There's things that sleep in the day and hunt at night. Maester Luwin: Owls and Shadowcats and... Osha: I'm not talking about Owls and Shadowcats. Maester Luwin: The "things" you speak of-- they've been gone for thousands of years. Osha: They wasn't gone, old man. They was sleeping. And they ain't sleeping no more.

Seeing the wall from above, we see Jon and Sam walking towards the edge. Samwell Tarly: I miss girls. Not even talking to them. I never talked to them. Just looking at them, hearing them giggle. Don't you miss girls? Both Jon and Sam are looking down and see a galloping horse. Riders. The horn. We have to blow the horn. Jon Snow: Why is he alone? Samwell Tarly: One blast for a Ranger returning, two for Wildlings, three for... Jon Snow: There's no rider. While the Wall's gate is being opened, the horse gallops inside the tunnel. Jon and Sam are rushing down, while the stable boy has caught the horse, bringing him towards Jon, Sam and Jeor Mormont. Night Watch stable boy: Whoa, boy, whoa. Jon Snow: That's my Uncle Benjen's horse. Where's my Uncle?

Returning to Kings Landing, we see Ned and Tomard walking down a hallway. Renly running towards them calling... Renly Baratheon: Ned! It's Robert. We were hunting...a boar... Surprised yet being shocked as he is, Ned walks towards Robert's chambers. Inside Robert's room, we see Cersei, Joffrey, Barristan Selmy and Maester Pycelle are all present. Robert speaks to joffrey, whom is sitting beside him. Robert Baratheon: I should have spent more time with you, shown you how to be a man. I was never meant to be a father. Go on. You don't want to see this. Joffrey walks out of the room. Robert Baratheon: My fault. Too much wine, missed my thrust. It stinks. It stinks like death. Don't think I can't smell it. I paid the bastard back, Ned. I drove my knife right through his brain. You ask them if I didn't. Ask them! I want the funeral feast to be the biggest the Kingdoms ever saw. And I want everyone to taste the boar that got me. Now leave us, the lot of you. I need to talk to Ned. Cersei Lannister: Robert, my sweet... Robert Baratheon: Out, all of you! On Robert's demand, everyone left except for Ned. As soon as the door shuts, Ned talks to Robert. Ned Stark: You damned fool. Robert Baratheon: Paper and ink on the table, write down what I say. "In the name of Robert of the House Baratheon, first of..." you know how it goes. Fill in the damn titles. "I hereby command Eddard of House Stark" titles, titles. "To serve as Lord Regent and Protector of the Realm upon my death. To rule in my stead, until my son Joffrey comes of age". Give it over. Ned hands over the letter and quill. It is seen that Robert's signs the letter with his autograph. Robert Baratheon: Give it to the council after I'm dead. At least they'll say I did this right, this one thing. You'll rule now. You'll hate it worse than I did, but you'll do it well. The girl, Daenerys. You were right. Varys, Littlefinger, my brother. Worthless. No one to tell me "no" but you. Only you. Let her live. Stop it, if it's not too late. Ned Stark: I will. Robert Baratheon: And my son Help him, Ned. Make him better than me. Ned Stark: I'll, I'll do everything I can to honor your memory. Robert Baratheon: My memory. King Robert Baratheon, murdered by a pig. Give me something for the pain and let me die. Ned walks out of Robert's chamber. Maester Pycelle, Renly, Varys and Barristan Selmy are waiting outside. Ned Stark: Give him milk of the poppy. Both Maester Pycelle as Renly re-enter Robert's chamber. Still outside a conversation occurs. Barristan Selmy: He was reeling from the wine. He commanded us to step aside, but I failed him. Ned Stark: No man could have protected him from himself. Lord Varys: I wonder, Ser Barristan, who gave the king this wine? Barristan Selmy: His squire, from the king's own skin. Ned Stark: His squire? The Lannister boy? Lord Varys: Such a dutiful boy to make sure his Grace did not lack refreshment. I do hope the poor lad does not blame himself. Ned Stark: His Grace has had a change of heart concerning Daenerys Targaryen. Whatever arrangements you made, unmake them. At once. Lord Varys: I'm afraid those birds have flown. The girl is likely dead already. Ned walks off.

Entering Khal Drogo's tent, Daenerys is braiding Khal Drogo's hair. The conversation is spoken in the Dothraki language. Khal Drogo: The stallion who mounts the world, has no need for iron chairs. Daenerys Stormborn: According to the prophecy, the stallions will ride to the ends of the world. Khal Drogo: The earth ends at the black salt sea. No horse can cross the poison water. Daenerys Stormborn: The earth does not end at the sea, there are many dirts beyond the sea. The dirt where I was born. Khal Drogo: Not dirt. Lands. Daenerys Stormborn: Lands, yes... There are thousands of ships in the free cities. Wooden horses that fly across the sea. Khal Drogo: Let's speak no more of wooden horses and iron chairs. Daenerys Stormborn: It's not a chair. It's a... Throne Khal Drogo: Throne? Daenerys Stormborn: A chair for a King to sit upon, or a Queen. Khal Drogo: A King does not need a chair to sit upon. He only needs a horse. Khal Drogo kisses Daenerys and walks out of the tent. A while later, at one of Vaes Dothrak's markets, Daenerys walks with Jorah Mormont. Daenerys Stormborn: Can't you help me make him understand? Jorah Mormont: The Dothraki do things in their own time, for their own reasons. Have patience, Khaleesi. We will go home, I promise you. Daenerys Stormborn: My brother was a fool, I know, but he was the rightful heir to the Seven Kingdoms. Have I said something funny, Ser? Jorah Mormont: Forgive me, Khaleesi, but your ancestor Aegon the Conqueror didn't seize six of the kingdoms because they were his right. He had no right to them. He seized them because he could. Daenerys Stormborn: And because he had dragons. Jorah Mormont: Ah well, having a few dragons makes things easier. Daenerys Stormborn: You don't believe it. Jorah Mormont: Have you ever seen a dragon, Khaleesi? I believe what my eyes and ears report. As for the rest It was 300 years ago. Who knows what really happened? Now if you'll pardon me, I'll seek out the merchant Captain, see if he has any letters for me. Deanerys Targarian: Well, I'll come with you. Jorah Mormont: No no, don't trouble yourself. Enjoy the market. I'll rejoin you soon enough. Jorah walks by a few merchants, while a little child is calling him. Little Bird: Psst, Jorah the Andal. The spider sends his greetings and his congratulations. A royal pardon. You can go home now. Jorah seems to have a change of heart. Meanwhile a merchant is heard from afar. Wine Merchant: Virzetha gizikhven! Mra qora! Mra qora! Sweet reds! I have sweet reds from Lys, Volantis and the Arbor! Tyrosh pear brandy! Andalish sours! I have them! I have them! Danaerys approaches the merchant Wine Merchant: A taste for the Khaleesi? I have a sweet red from Dorne, my lady. One taste and you'll name your first child after me. Daenerys Stormborn: My son already has his name, but I'll try your summerwine. Just a taste. Wine Merchant: My Lady, you are from Westeros. Doreah: You have the honor of addressing Daenerys of the House Targaryen. Khaleesi of the riding men and princess of the Seven Kingdoms. Wine Merchant: Princess. Daenerys Stormborn: Rise. I'd still like to taste that wine. Wine Merchant: That? Dornish swill. Not worthy of a princess. I have a dry red from the Arbor. Nectar of the Gods. Let me give you a cask. Uh... a gift. Daenerys Stormborn: You honor me, Ser. Wine Merchant: The honor...the honor is all mine. Rakharo: Huh-uh, huh-uh. Rakharo pulls the cask out of the merchants hands. Wine Merchant: You know there are many in your homeland that pray for your return, princess. Daenerys Stormborn: I hope to repay your kindness someday. Jorah Mormont: Rakharo. Rakharo: Huh. Jorah Mormont: Put down that cask. Daenerys Stormborn: Is something wrong? Jorah Mormont: I have a thirst. Open it. Wine Merchant: The wine is for the Khaleesi. It's not for the likes of you. Jorah Mormont: Open it. The wine merchant obeys and opens the cask. Jorah Mormont: Pour. Wine Merchant: It would be a crime to drink a wine this rich without at least giving it time to breathe. Daenerys Stormborn: Do as he says. Wine Merchant: As the princess commands. The wine merchant poors the wine into a cup. Wine Merchant: Sweet, isn't it? Can you smell the fruit, Ser? Taste it, My Lord. Tell me that that is not the finest wine that has ever touched your tongue. Jorah Mormont: You first. Wine Merchant: Me? I'm afraid I am not worthy of the vintage. Besides, it is a poor wine merchant who would drink up his own wares. Daenerys Stormborn: You will drink. The wine merchant takes Jorah's cup. Looks both Jorah and Daenerys innocently in their eyes, while making a toasting gesture. As soon as his lips touches his cup, he drops it and tries to flee. Doreah: Khaleesi! Stop him! After a very short chase, Rakharo was able to capture the wine merchant, grabbing the merchants leg with his whip. Jorah grabs Daenerys's arm. Jorah Mormont: Come.

At the Wall we see Jeor Mormont speaking towards his brothers of the Night's Watch. Jeor Mormont: You came to us as outlaws, poachers, rapers, killers, thieves. You came alone, in chains, without friends nor honor. You came to us rich and you came to us poor. Some of you bear the names of proud houses, others only bastard names or no names at all. It does not matter. All that, is in the past. Here, on the wall, are all one house. Tonight... Samwel Tarly: You're allowed to look happy. You're going to be a Ranger. Isn't that what you always wanted? Jon Snow: I want to find my Uncle. I know he's alive out there. I know he is. Samwell Tarly: I wish I could help you, but I'm no Ranger. It's the steward's life for me. Samwell Tarly: There's honor in being a steward. Not much, really. But there's food. Jeor Mormont: Here you begin anew. A man of The Night's Watch lives his life for the realm. Not for a king, or a lord, or the honor of this house or that house. Not for gold nor glory nor a woman's love. But for the realm! And all the people in it. You've all learned the words of the vow. Think carefully before you say them. The penalty for desertion, is death. You can take your vows here tonight, at sunset. Do any of you still keep the old Gods? Jon Snow stands. Jon Snow: I do, my lord. Jeor Mormont: You'll want to take your vow before a heart tree as your Uncle did. Jon Snow: Yes, my lord. Jeor Mormont: You'll find a Weirwood a mile North of the Wall. And your old Gods too, maybe. Samwell Tarly: my lord, might I go as well? Jeor Mormont: Does house Tarly keep the old Gods? Samwell Tarly: No, my lord. I was named in the light of the Seven, as my father was and his father before him. Alliser ThorneL Why would you forsake the Gods of your father and your house? Samwell Tarly: The Night's Watch is my house now. The Seven have never answered my prayers. Perhaps the old Gods will. Jeor Mormont: As you wish, lad. You've all been assigned an order, according to our needs and your strengths. Halder to the builders. Pyp to the stewards. Toad to the builders. Grenn to the Rangers. Samwell to the stewards. Matthar to the Rangers. Dareon to the stewards. Balian to the Rangers. Rast to the Rangers. Jon to the stewards. Rancer to the builders. Echiel to the builders. Gordo to the stewards. Niko to the Rangers. Escan to the Rangers. Vorkoy to the builders. Joby to the stables. Mink to the kitchens. Allo to the builders. Nelugo to the Rangers. May all the Gods preserve you. Jaremy Rykker: Rangers with me. Othell Yarwyck: Builders! Everyone walks to their designated leader. Sam, Jon and Pyp walk towards Maester Aemon and await their tasks. Maester Aemon: Samwell, you will assist me in the rookery and library. Pyp, you will report to Bowen Marsh in the kitchens. Luke, report to one-eyed Joe in the stables. Dareon, we are sending you to Eastwatch. Present yourself to Borcas when you arrive. Make no comment about his nose. Jon Snow, Lord Commander Mormont has requested you for his personal steward. Jon Snow: Will I serve the Lord Commander's meals and fetch hot water for his bath. Maester Aemon: Certainly. And keep a fire burning in his chambers. Change his sheets and blankets daily and do everything else the Lord Commander requires of you. Jon Snow: Do you take me for a servant? Maester Aemon: We took you for a man of The Night's Watch. But perhaps we were wrong in that. Jon Snow: May I go? Maester Aemon: As you wish. Jon walks away, while Sam and Pyp follow him. Samwell Tarly: Jon, wait! Don't you see what they're doing? Jon Snow: I see Ser Alliser's revenge, that's all. He wanted it and he got it. Stewards are nothing but maids! I'm a better swordsman and rider than any of you! It's not fair. Pypar: Fair? I was singing for a high lord at Acorn Hall when he put his hand on my leg and he wanted to see my cock. I pushed him away and he said he'd have my hands cut off for stealing their silver. So now I'm here. At the end of the world with no one to sing for, but old men and little shits like you. I'll never see my family again. I'll never be inside a woman again. So don't tell me about fair. Samwell Tarly: I thought you were caught stealing a wheel of cheese for your starving sister? Pypar: You think I was gonna tell a bunch of strangers that a high lord tried to grab my cock? Samwell Tarly: Could you sing me a song, Pyp? I'd like to hear a song. Angrily Pyp walks off. Sam talks to Jon. Samwell Tarly: Now listen to me. The old man is the Lord Commander of The Night's Watch. You'll be with him day and night. Yes, you'll clean his clothes. But you'll also take his letters, attend him at meetings, squire for him in battle. You'll know everything, be part of everything. And he asked for you himself. He wants to groom you for command. Jon Snow: I just, I always wanted to be a Ranger. Samwell Tarly: I always wanted to be a Wizard. Jon laughs out loud. What? No, I'm serious. So you'll stay and say your words with me?

In Kings Landing we see Ned Stark walking with his guards, while Renly approaches. Renly Baratheon: Lord Stark, a moment. Alone if you will. Renly Baratheon: He named you Protector of the Realm. He did. Renly Baratheon: She won't care. Give me an hour and I can put a hundred swords at your command. Ned Stark: And what should I do with a hundred swords? Renly Baratheon: Strike! Tonight while the castle sleeps. We must get Joffrey away from his mother and into our custody. Protector of the Realm or no, he who holds the King holds the Kingdom. Every moment you delay gives Cersei another moment to prepare. By the time Robert dies, it will be too late for the both of us. Ned Stark: What about Stannis? Renly Baratheon: Saving the Seven Kingdoms from Cersei and delivering them to Stannis? You have odd notions about protecting the realm. Ned Stark: Stannis is your older brother. Renly Baratheon: This isn't about the bloody line of succession. That didn't matter when you rebelled against the Mad King. It shouldn't matter now. What's best for the Kingdoms? What's best for the people we rule? We all know what Stannis is. He inspires no love or loyalty. He's not a King. I am. Ned Stark: Stannis is a commander. He's led men into war twice. He destroyed the Greyjoy fleet. Renly Baratheon: Yes, he's a good soldier. Everyone knows that. So was Robert. Tell me something: Do you still believe good soldiers make good kings? Ned Stark: I will not dishonor Robert's last hours by shedding blood in his halls and dragging frightened children from their beds. Ned walks off to his chamber, while Renly is left behind agitated. Entering Ned Starks chamber, we see him writing a letter to Stannis. Giving orders to Tomard. Ned Stark: You will sail to dragonstone tonight. You will place this in the hand of Stannis Baratheon. Not his steward, not his Captain of the guard, and not his wife. Only Stannis himself. Tomard: Yes, My Lord. Littlefinger enters the room Ned Stark: Now leave us. Tomard follows Ned's command and leaves his chamber. Littlefingers starts off the conversation. Petyr Baelish: My Lord protector. Ned Stark: The King has no true born sons. Joffrey and Tommen are Jaime Lannister's bastards. Petyr Baelish: So when the King dies... Ned Stark: The throne passes to his brother Lord Stannis. Petyr Baelish: So it would seem. Unless... Ned Stark: There is no "unless". He is the rightful heir. Nothing can change that. Petyr Baelish: And he cannot take the throne without your help. You would be wise to deny it to him and to make sure Joffrey succeeds. Ned Stark: Do you have a shred of honor? Petyr Baelish: You are now Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm. All of the power is yours. You need only reach out and take it. Make peace with the Lannisters. Release the Imp. Wed your daughter to Joffrey. We have plenty of time to get rid of Stannis. And if Joffrey seems likely to cause problems when he comes into his throne, we simply reveal his little secret and seat Lord Renly there instead. Ned Stark: We? Petyr Baelish: You'll need someone to share these burdens. I assure you, my price would be modest. Ned Stark: What you suggest is treason. Petyr Baelish: Only if we lose. Ned Stark: Make peace with the Lannisters, you say. With the people who tried to murder my boy. Petyr Baelish: We only make peace with our enemies, my Lord. That's why it's called "making peace" . Ned Stark: No. I won't do it. Petyr Baelish: So it will be Stannis and war? Ned Stark: There is no other choice. He is the heir. Petyr Baelish: So why did you call me here? Not for my wisdom, clearly. Ned Stark: You promised Catelyn you would help me. The Queen has a dozen knights and a hundred men-at-arms. Enough to overwhelm what remains of my household guard. I need the gold cloaks. The City Watch is 2,000 strong and sworn to defend the King's peace. Petyr Baelish: Look at you. You know what you want me to do. You know it has to be done, but it's not honorable so the words stick in your throat. When the Queen proclaims one King and the Hand proclaims another, whose peace do the Gold Cloaks protect? Who do they follow? The man who pays them.

Back at the Wall, we see Jon, Sam and Ghost, walking with a few Night's Watch brothers, on their way to the Weirwood tree. Upon arrival, they're taking their vows. Both Jon and Sam: Hear my words and bear witness to my vow. Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to The Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come. Othell Yarwyck: You knelt as boys. Rise now as men of The Night's Watch. Fellow Night's Watch brothers: Well done. Well done. Ghost suddenly appears and is holding onto something. Samwell Tarly: What's he got there? Jon SnowL To me, Ghost. Bring it here. It appeared that Ghost was holding a frozen hand. Samwell Tarly: Gods be good!

Returning to a tent in Vaes Dothrak, both Daenarys and Jorah are having a conversation, while walking past the captured wine merchant. Daenerys Stormborn: What will they do to him? When the Khalasar rides, he'll be leashed to a saddle, forced to run behind the horses for as long as he can. Daenerys Stormborn: And when he falls? I saw a man last nine miles once. Daenerys Stormborn: King Robert still wants me dead. This poisoner was the first. He won't be the last. Daenerys Stormborn: I thought he'd leave me alone, now that my brother is gone. He will never leave you alone. If you ride to darkest Asshai, his assassins will follow you. If you sailed all the way to the Basilisk Isles, his spies would tell him. He will never abandon the hunt. You're a Targaryen. The last Targaryen. Your son will have Targaryen blood with 40,000 riders behind him. Daenerys Stormborn: He will not have my son. He will not have you either, Khaleesi. Khal Drogo enters the tent with a couple of his men. After staring at the scared merchant, he walks towards Daenarys Khal Drogo: Moon of my life. Are you hurt? Daenarys gently shakes her head in disapproval. Khal Drogo kisses Daenarys's forehead and talks to Jorah. Khal Drogo: Jorah the Andal, I heard what you did. Choose any horse you wish, it is yours.I make this gift to you. And to my son, the stallion who will mount the world. I will also pledge a gift. I will give him the iron chair, that his mother's father sat upon. I will give him Seven Kingdoms. I Drogo, will do this. I will take my Khalasar west to where the world ends and ride wooden horses across the black salt water as no Khal has done before. I will kill the men in iron suits and tear down their stone houses. I will rape their women, take their children as slaves and bring their broken gods back to Vaes Dothrak. This, I vow. I, Drogo, son of Bharbo. I swear before the Mother of Mountains as the stars look down in witness! As the stars look down in witness! The Khalasar is moving out of Vaes Dothrak, riding underneath the Horse Gate. Just as Jorah predicted, the wine merchant is leashed to one of the horses saddles, covered with dirt, struggling to move on.

In Kings Landing Ned stark walks with his men, while being called by a messenger. Messenger: Lord Stark! Varly: Stop! Ned Stark: No, all right. It's all right. Let him through. Messenger: Lord Stark, King Joffrey and the Queen Regent request your presence in the Throne Room. Ned Stark: King Joffrey? Messenger: King Robert is gone. The Gods give him rest. Ned seems petrified by the news. Shortly after, Ned arrives close-by the Throne room, where Littlefinger, Varys and a few Stark men await him. Petyr Baelish: All is accomplished. The City Watch is yours. Ned Stark: Good. Is Lord Renly joining us? Lord Varys: I fear Lord Renly has left the city. He rode through the old gate an hour before dawn with Ser Loras Tyrell and some 50 retainers. Last seen galloping South in some haste. When moving on, affront of the Throne room, Janos Slynt and the Gold Cloaks await Ned. Janos Slynt: We stand behind you, Lord Stark. Messenger: All hail his Grace, Joffrey of Houses Baratheon and Lannister, the first of his name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. King Joffrey: I command the council to make all necessary arrangements for my coronation. I wish to be crowned within the fortnight. Today I shall accept oaths of fealty from my loyal councilors. Ned Stark: Ser Barristan, I believe no man here could ever question your honor. Barristan Selmy: King Robert's seal. Unbroken. "Lord Eddard Stark is herein named Protector of the Realm, to rule as Regent until the heir come of age". Cersei Lannister: May I see that letter, Ser Barristan? Protector of the realm. Is this meant to be your shield, Lord Stark? A piece of paper? Cersei shreds Robert's letter to pieces Barristan Selmy: Those were the King's words. Cersei Lannister: We have a new King now. Lord Eddard, when we last spoke you offered me some counsel. Allow me to return the courtesy. Bend the knee, My Lord. Bend the knee and swear loyalty to my son and we shall allow you to live out your days in the gray waste you call home. Your son has no claim to the throne. King Joffrey: Liar! Cersei Lannister: You condemn yourself with your own mouth, Lord Stark. Ser Barristan, seize this traitor. Ned Stark: Ser Barristan is a good man, a loyal man. Do him no harm. Cersei Lannister: You think he stands alone? Cregor Clegane draws his sword. King Joffrey: Kill him! Kill all of them, I command it! Ned Stark: Commander! Take the Queen and her children into custody. Escort them back to the royal apartments and keep them there, under guard. Janos Slynt: Men of the Watch! The Gold Cloaks draw their swords. Ned Stark: I want no bloodshed. Tell your men to lay down their swords. No one needs to die. Petyr Baelish: Now! Suddenly, the Gold Cloaks switch sides and attack the Stark men. Littlefinger sneaks up to Ned Stark. He grabs him from behind, then holds a dagger to his throat, saying... Petyr Baelish: I did warn you not to trust me .

The episode furthers the story line of deterioration of the political balance of the Seven Kingdoms, with Eddard Stark revealing what he has discovered to Cersei Lannister while King Robert is still away on a hunt. The title of the episode is part of a quote from Cersei Lannister during the final confrontation with Eddard: When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground. The catchphrase has been frequently used during the promotion of both the books and the TV series.

The episode attracted 2.4 million viewers in its initial airing, with a total of 3.2 million including the follow-up airing. The episode was generally well received by critics for its well-acted dramatic tension, but with several criticizing the coupling of exposition and nudity as sexposition .

Trial of Petyr Baelish

Although this page is based on canonical information, the actual name of this subject is pure conjecture.

The trial of Petyr Baelish was the event that marked the closing of the War of the Five Kings . It is held in the great hall of Winterfell by Lady of Winterfell Sansa Stark , with Arya Stark and Bran Stark , against Petyr Baelish , the nominal Lord of Harrenhal and the Lord Protector of the Vale . It is witnessed by the Maester Wolkan , Lord Yohn Royce and multiple Stark and Arryn men .

History [ ]

Prelude [ ].

Sansa and Baelish talk about Jon Snow and Daenerys forming an alliance, with Baelish suggesting that Jon should be unnamed as King in the North .

Sansa knows that Arya would not tolerate it and that she is now a killer, having trained with the Faceless Men , whom Baelish only knows by reputation. Baelish explains that when he wants to understand a person's motive, he plays 'a little game' and plants the seed that Arya wants Sansa dead for apparently betraying their family and to replace her as Lady of Winterfell.

The trial [ ]

Sansa has Arya brought to the great hall in front of the lords of the North and the Vale. Addressing Arya, Sansa states her desire to protect the North and House Stark. She then proceeds to state the accusations of murder and treason , asking how these charges are answered. Because she continues to look at Arya, it appears she is directing her question to her sister, but Sansa then adds, "Lord Baelish", revealing it is he who truly stands accused.

Taken by surprise, Baelish tells Sansa that he's confused. Sansa starts with the simplest charge: that Baelish murdered their aunt Lysa by pushing her through the Moon Door [1] and asks if he denies it. Because Sansa herself was a witness to Lysa's murder, Baelish admits to it but claims he did it to protect Sansa. She refutes his claim by making her own: he did it to gain control of the Vale.

The next charge laid against Petyr is that he orchestrated the Assassination of Jon Arryn by giving Lysa Tears of Lys , which she used to poison him. [2] Asked whether he denies this charge as well, Baelish avoids a direct response by explaining that Lysa's state of mind made her see enemies everywhere, implying that Lysa acted alone.

Sansa accuses Baelish of having her aunt send a letter to Eddard and Catelyn Stark , claiming the Lannisters murdered Jon Arryn. [3] The result of the letter set events into motion that started a feud between House Stark and House Lannister, eventually culminating in the War of the Five Kings . This accusation, if true, would make Baelish the true instigator of the war. This time, Petyr directly denies knowledge of the letter.

The final charge is that Baelish conspired with Cersei and Joffrey to betray their father, which led to his imprisonment [4] and ultimately his execution , [5] on false charges of treason. Now clearly angry, Sansa asks Petyr if he denies it. Baelish denies it, stating that none of them saw what happened, and thus there is no case against him. However, Bran, having seen Baelish's crimes through his powers in the Sight , says that Baelish held a knife to Ned's throat and repeats what he told Ned when he betrayed him, "I did warn you not to trust me", leaving Baelish speechless and shocked.

Arya, wearing the Valyrian steel dagger that an assassin used to try and kill Bran, draws it for all to see and reminds Baelish he told Catelyn that it belonged to Tyrion , [6] which was another of his many lies: the dagger, in fact, belonged to Baelish himself. [b]

With the court against him, Baelish pleads that he has known Sansa since she was a child and that he's always protected her, to which Sansa retorts that he sold her to the Boltons . [7] When Baelish asks if they can speak alone (presumably to try to manipulate Sansa into freeing or exonerating him), Sansa repeats his words of 'playing a little game' to assume the worst of someone, thus assuming the worst reason Baelish has for turning Sansa and Arya against each other, deducing that he did the same to Catelyn and Lysa. Baelish protests, demanding a chance to defend himself, but is ignored.

As Baelish realizes that he won't be able to talk his way out of this, he commands Lord Royce to escort him back to the Eyrie as the Lord Protector of the Vale. Given the specific crimes Littlefinger committed against House Arryn , however, Lord Royce no longer recognizes Baelish's authority, and thus refuses, having long distrusted Baelish and knowing that he is a bad influence on Robin Arryn . Out of options and now terrified, Baelish pleads with Sansa for his life, confessing his love publicly for her and for Catelyn, though Sansa points out that despite this, he still betrayed both of them. Sharing a look with her sister, Sansa sentences him to death and callously thanks Baelish for all his lessons, which she vows to never forget. As Baelish tries to speak one final time, Arya, with his former dagger still drawn in her hand, walks up and swiftly slits his throat with it before stepping back and sheathing it. Everyone present in the great hall watches as the former Master of Coin, and the true mastermind behind all the chaos in the realm, bleeds out and slumps to the floor, finally dead. [8]

Aftermath [ ]

With Baelish's death, House Baelish is rendered extinct, and all who died on both sides of the War of the Five Kings as a result of his ambition and deceit, including the Starks, Lannisters, Boltons, Freys, Greyjoys, Arryns, Tyrells and Tullys are avenged.

With Baelish dead, Cersei, Euron Greyjoy and the Night King are left as the final remaining enemies of House Stark.

Behind the scenes [ ]

  • No objective witness was brought. The only potential witness that the Starks could have summoned to testify to one of the crimes Littlefinger was charged with was the Hound, who witnessed the massacre in the Red Keep . Had the Starks summoned the Hound, he might have provided indisputable testimony in regards to Littlefinger's actions.
  • No incriminating evidence has been presented to support the accusations. The dagger itself was worthless as an evidence, because it should have been linked by an objective witness to any of the crimes Littlefinger was charged with.
  • Bran's ability to see past events was inadmissible and inconclusive testimony, since it could not be either verified or refuted, similarly to a testimony given under hypnosis or even hearsay.
  • While accusing Littlefinger of Lysa's death, Sansa ignores that she had previously given a different version of these events to the lords of the Vale, including Lord Royce, claiming that Lysa had killed herself. [9] That perjury disqualified her as a witness; moreover, the fact she was personally harmed by Littlefinger's deeds - as she herself said - disqualified her as a judge.
  • Another vile deed of Littlefinger's left out by Sansa that might have cost her life was using her, without her consent or knowledge, as an accomplice/scapegoat in respect of Joffrey's assassination . Had Sansa been caught by the Lannister guards while wearing the incriminating evidence (the necklace), she would have probably been convicted of the murder alongside Tyrion.
  • Littlefinger had also later informed Cersei of Sansa's whereabouts after he delivered her to the Boltons, leaving out the part that it was he who brought her to them. He also made a proposition to Cersei of using the knights of the Vale to mop up whoever won the impending battle between the Boltons and Stannis in exchange for rulership of the North, which Cersei agreed to on the condition that he bring her Sansa's head. [10] All of this could also have been brought to light due to Bran's abilities but was left out.
  • A much more plausible accusation for Arya to have made against Littlefinger (even though her only "evidence" would have again been the Sight) was that he conspired with Tyrion to manipulate their mother into freeing Jaime , thus weakening the Starks' position and causing a division among their ranks, by lying that Arya was being held captive along with Sansa. [11] [12]
  • Normally, Littlefinger might have managed to use his sharp wit and quick tongue to talk his way out of the "trial", by pointing out the aforementioned flaws in the testimonies against him; he could have also demanded a trial by combat , as Tyrion did in his unfair trials (it is unlikely someone at the room would have volunteered to fight for Littlefinger, but anyone in such position would grab at any straw, no matter how flimsy). The reason he failed to defend himself might have beeen that he was caught offguard, things happened too fast, that he could not gather his thoughts and think of anything better than begging and using his authority as Lord of the Vale.
  • The one person whose presence does not make this trial a complete show is Lord Royce. Although Sansa had lied to him earlier, he later confronted Littlefinger upon hearing that she was wed to Ramsay Bolton , and Baelish responded by nearly manipulating her impressionable cousin Robin Arryn into having Royce killed under false pretenses. [13] Sansa could have saved face with Royce by addressing this incident as well due to the Sight, but no mention of it is made. Alternatively, it's possible that Royce realized Sansa's deception earlier and decided to disregard it, as the trial was the perfect excuse to get rid of Littlefinger for good.

Arya Stark was born between Sansa and Bran, making her either 11 or 12 in Season 1. The rest of the Stark children have been aged up by 2 years from their book ages, so it can be assumed that she is 11 in Season 1. Arya is 18 in Season 8 according to HBO , which means at least 7 years occur in the span of the series; therefore, each season of Game of Thrones must roughly correspond to a year in-universe, placing the events of Season 7 in 304 AC.
  • ↑ Littlefinger never denied the dagger originally belonged to him; on the contrary, he told outright to Ned and Catelyn "There's only one dagger like this in all of the Seven Kingdoms. It's mine". He lied about the identity of the person to whom he lost the dagger in a bet, which was not Tyrion (but Robert, as revealed in the books).
